TWO papers on health and safety were given Thursday afternoon when a joint session of the Health and Safety Committee and the Mining Methods Committee was held. T. T. Read presided and the first paper, on ventilation at Climax, was presented by the author, L. H. Glanville. In the subsequent discussion by Cloyd M. Smith, P. B. Bucky, B. F. Tillson, D. F. Haley, J. L. G. Weysser, and others a number of interesting points not covered by the paper, which appears in full in the January Mining Technology, were brought out. Ventilation troubles in mines so often hinge on the air being too hot and damp that it was interesting to hear of one where it is frequently too cold and too dry.

ENGINEERS have long pondered the answer to the question of "How am I doing?" and in large measure the answer from the economics angle is provided by the 1946 survey of the engineering profession now being published by the Engineers Joint Council as an eighty-page bulletin entitled "The Engineering Profession in Transition." The survey, based upon a completely precoded mail questionnaire, aimed at three major objectives: (1) to determine the general impact of World War II upon the profession in the period 1939 through 1946; (2) to obtain re- R liable data from which valid findings could be derived to predict how active the profession would be after 1946; and (3) to determine if the war's upheaval had changed materially the pattern of professional activities, education, background, and earnings from those which existed prior to 1939. Abundant data on the economic status of the engineer based upon years of experience in his particular field, the specific branch of the industry in which he served, and his educational background are presented. In its largest product launch in company history, Cummins Engines welcomed more than 200 customers, vendors and media to witness the unveiling of its new QSK95 engine at its Seymour Engine Plant in Seymour, IN on Nov. 1. It took the efforts of 150 engineers to design the QSK95 and more than $100 million in investments to establish a new production line and test facility at Cummins? Seymour Engine plant. The result of these efforts is a new platform of engines that Cummins says will provide as much as 2,983 kW (4,000 hp) and will be the most powerful, high-speed diesel engine ever built.

THE quarters provided for the session on Milling Methods, Monday afternoon, Feb. 17, were filled to capacity. Galen H. Clevenger presided and notables, such as A. W. Fahrenwald, A. O. Gates, F. A. Thomson, W. L. Zeigler and others who had not graced a milling meeting in New York in recent years, or per- haps even never before, were actually present and spoke "in person." The first paper, by A. W. Fahrellwald (T. P. 275), entitled "Classifier Efficiency ; An experimental Study," was summarized by the author, who clearly showed the inconsistency of determining the efficiency of a classifier by means of sizing tests, especially where the material classified consists of a mixture of minerals of different specific gravities. In place of sieve analysis the procedure recommended involves the use of a glass settling-tube which is considered to give ideal classification and thus serve as a standard against which mill classification will be compared and relative efficiency calculated. This procedure sounds logical. Perhaps the greatest difficulty may lie in securing an ideal classifier acceptable to every one.

This paper reports the advances made during the development of underground mine fill technology from circa 1960 to the present and, in particular, indicates where increased input from process plant metallurgists û mainly milling, but also smelting û can contribute to further advances. Fill types pertinent to the discussion are partially deslimed, partially dewatered mill tailings fill (uncemented, cemented) and paste fill. Pertinent process plant includes hydrocyclones, thickeners, filters, elutriation tanks, holding tanks, mixing mills, pumps and pipes. Control instrumentation is a critical component of each of the process plant units. The impact of smelter practice on filling is not considered in this paper, except to note that some smelter slags are, or have the potential to be, active pozzolans and when ground to the specific surface area of Portland cement can act as partial Portland cement replacements, a factor of economic and operating significance when Portland cement supply lines are considerable and/or tenuous. The important role of process plant metallurgists has long been recognised, with Thomas, Nantel and Notley (1979) including them as one of the many categories of professionals with contributions to make. With the ever increasing sophistication of mine fill practice and its ever increasing acceptance as an essential component of the mining/ milling/waste disposal process, the scope for contributions by the modern breed of highly educated, specifically trained process plant metallurgists is becoming ever increasingly obvious.

Sulphur isotope ratios have been determined for 81 sulphides and S and O isotope ratios for 26 barites from the Alston Block in the northern Pennine ore field. In addition, both isotope ratios have been determined for 29 evaporitic anhydrites of various ages from European and Australian localities. The consistency of the sulphate isotope ratios over a wide area of the northern Pennines, and their similarity to values for Lower Carboniferous evaporites, suggests that the sulphate originated from Lower Carboniferous connate waters. It is suggested that these mingled with warm brines rising through granitic plutons beneath Tynehead and Upper Weardale, the aqueous sulphide ion in these brines having a delta34S value of approximately +10 per mille. The delta34S values for the sulphides range from +15.0 to -5.9 per mille and show an outward zoning with higher values in the central fluorite zones and mainly negative values in the outer barite zones. The wide range of delta34S values for the sulphide S is not characteristic of magmatic S and there is no adequate local source in the Carboniferous sediments. It is suggested that formation waters, probably mainly of connate origin, sank down sufficiently deep to become heated above 200°C before rising through Caledonian granite plutons into the Carboniferous sediments, where they spread laterally to mingle with cooler sulphatic connate water. The rising fluids were hypersaline brines carrying F, Ba, Pb, Zn, Cu and S. Temperatures of deposition calculated from galena-sphalerite isotope fractionation are similar to temperatures previously determined from fluid inclusion studies.

Salt, a non-metallic mineral whose use dates back to earliest history of mankind, and whose uses cover the widest range for any mineral raw material, is generally of widespread occurrence in commercially recoverable quantities in the oceans, in certain sedimentary rocks, in certain lakes, and in certain underground waters. Passing over geological detail, it may be said that, generally, all of the salt in the world has, at least once in geological history, been in solution in the oceans. The total salt content of today's oceans, said to equal 4.5 million cubic miles of rock salt, dwarfs the tremendous volume of salt in the sedimentary rocks. In 1958, United States production of salt was about 22 million net tons and world production about 82 million. About 3 percent of United States production is table salt, with chemical, municipal, industrial and agricultural uses taking the remainder. Mississippi River. Figure 1 has been expanded sufficiently to show also those salt occurrences and producing points which might economically ship salt into these states. Although widespread in occurrence, salt deposits and possible production areas generally show very sharp local boundaries. Salt-for non-table use is susceptible to ?place value?, a common problem in low valued raw materials, where transportation costs often exceed the value of the material f.o.b. the production point. Generally only large capacity mechanized salt producing operations can compete in United States markets, as contrasted to the many small local salt evaporators in less industrialized Mexico.

The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on guidance systems for computerized haulage in underground mines. This report describes the process of component selection, installation and testing, perception algorithm development, and steering control algorithm development, to produce a real-time steering control system for an articulated haul truck for underground mining. Ultrasonic transducers were mounted on the truck to provide perception data by measuring the distance to the ribs. Linear potentiometers mounted inside the steering cylinders measured the steering angles. Algorithms, implemented on an inexpensive, robust onboard computer system, analyzed the data and controlled the steering via an electro-hydraulic proportional valve. The steering algorithm presented follows a zone defined by the relative position between the truck and a rib. Experimental verification of the ability to follow the zone in a test corridor on the Colorado School of Mines campus is presented. The automatic steering system successfully negotiated straight sections, curves, and the transition zones between straight and curves with the truck in first and second gears. The resulting real-time automatic-steering system can be applied to many underground articulated machines.

This report describes the results of laboratory studies on leaching of copper ores.tlf These studies are the first step of a program for the investigation of in situ leaching of tabular, metalliferous ore bodies.(2) The basic steps required in the development of an in situ process are: 1. Leachability - the ability to dissolve the metal values from the ore under in situ conditions must be demonstrated. 2. Ore Preparation - the ore must be prepared so that sufficient contact with the solution can be attained. 3. System Design - integrated in situ systems must be designed and studied for engineering feasibility. 4. Economic Feasibility - the economics of the system must be shown to be economically feasible and competitive. 5. Environmental Feasibility - the loss of reagents into the environment must be investigated. 6. Pilot Scale Testing - the feasibility of the system must be demonstrated on a sufficiently large scale. The studies described in this report were concerned only with the first step of the program, viz., leachability. Native and sulfide copper ores from the Michigan copper district were selected as model ores for these studies. Aqueous amnonia solutions were chosen as the solvents to be investigated. In this study carbonate (CO3, HCO3, H2CO3) was used exclusively as the anion. In keeping with custom it is referred to as carbon dioxide and concentrations are ex- pressed in terms of CO2. THE work to be described was undertaken at various periods from 1937 to 1939 on the Busia gold field, in the eastern province of Uganda. It was decided to examine the possibility of reef prospection by the resistivity method, for it was not known how far the usually disintegrated nature of most reefs in the ubiquitous laterite near the surface would obscure indications obtained by resistivity traverses. The work at the commencement was therefore largely experimental, but the results obtained thereby were satisfactory, and a survey was started at the Government closed area at Amonikakine. With the limited time and resources at the writer's disposal, it was not possible to complete the survey to his satisfaction or to follow up exhaustively all the geophysical indications, but some of the results of the experimental work and the survey were of sufficient interest to be worth recording; in particular the relation between the width of reef, electrode separation and shape of the curve, and the interference effect of constant separation curves over zones of float are significant and useful. Three new veins were located, but only one contained sufficient gold to warrant detailed prospection. This was called the Geophysical reef, and was uncovered over a strike distance of 1140 ft., and there are indications that it extends over a distance of 1990 ft. These results and the recommendations consequent therefrom were embodied in a special report to the Uganda Geological Survey. HISTORY OF THE FIELD The Busia field is in the southeastern corner of Uganda near the Kenya-Uganda border, and is about 17 miles north of the northeastern corner of Lake Victoria. Gold was first discovered in the area in the stream beds by Davies1,2 in 1932. Subsequently numerous small alluvial claims were worked by prospectors and the area was prospected for reef by a company for periods varying from three to nine months, but was finally abandoned, as the results were considered unfavorable. Further prospecting by the Geological Survey in 1935-1936 under Davies3 and later under the writer4 uncovered three reefs with sufficient gold values to be of economic interest. These were finally taken over by a company known as Borderland Syndicate, which still owns the area, and from September 1937 to the end of 1941 about 13,000 oz. of gold was extracted from reefs of the area proved by the Geological Survey. Opencast mining operations are still proceeding (February 1943). The Amonikakine area lies to the immediate north of that of Borderland Syndicate. A certain amount of prospecting had been done when the writer started work there. As a result of his report, this area was taken over by another syndicate, but little further work was accomplished before it ceased operating because of difficulties of wartime working.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. Although small units have been in use formany years, particularly in opal mining at shallow depths, there has been little effort in the past to explore the potential of the vacuum lift system in other more demanding applications. Recent developments in Western Australia by a small number of mining companies, contractors and manufacturers have seen the design and construction of several larger, more powerful units for use in winzing, shaft sinking, hoisting and spillage removal. Some of these units have proved very successful and suggest that they could be developed for a wider range of applications and duties in future.

WITH the great expansion currently being made in the aluminum output of the United States, not only by the company that has heretofore been the sole producer but by a now organization in the field it is only natural to wonder to what degree the; ore reserves of the United States can contribute to the growing consumption. For the three-year period 1937-'39 the U.S. Bureau of Mine's figures indicate that the annual domestic production of bauxite averaged about 370,000 long tons, compared with average, annual import of about 194,000 long tons. About 85 per cent of the imports came from Surinam, nearly all of which went into aluminum manufacture. Not all of the or -kipped from mines in the United States is used to make alumimun however as Bureau figures indicate that in these three years an average of only 48 per cent of the domestic ore shipment were so used the abrasive chemical and other industries taking respectively 27, 21, and 4 per cent of the output. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) developed VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT). It is a training platform that allows mine rescue team members to explore virtual emergency scenarios collaboratively. Team members use a head-mounted display to visualize and interact together with equipment, hazards, and dynamic ventilation. All player actions are recorded and displayed for debriefing. Researchers at NIOSH demonstrated the training platform at various mine rescue competitions, including the International Mine Rescue Competition, and collected feedback. Participants’ responses were overwhelmingly positive. This paper describes the development of the software platform and the results of the usability surveys and interviews.

THE third annual Joint Western Mining Convention, held at Los Angeles, Sept. 10 to 13 inclusive, was a notable success both as to attendance and interest. Registration the first day amounted to 201, and the total crept up to 347 before the close. The American Institute of Mining Engineers was well represented, approximately 80% of those registered and most of the speakers being members. This illustrates largely the amount of interlocking membership and the reason for holding at one time and place meetings of the several related organizations. The plan has proved so successful that it is probable that Spokane will extend an invitation for next year that seems likely to be accepted. It is proposed that the convention be timed so as to permit visitors from the East to stop there Oct. 3 to 5, en route to the American Institute of Mining Engineers meeting at San Francisco, Oct. 7 to 9. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Petroleum Division will hold its fall session at Los Angeles, the two streams of travel meeting in San Francisco, just before departure of the party of engineers traveling to Japan to attend the World's Engineering Congress. The Los Angeles meeting opened Monday morning with a general session under the auspices of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress with Philip Wiseman in the chair. After a series of short responses to the welcome extended, Charles W. Merrill discussed the needs of the western mining industry. A complimentary luncheon to members and delegates followed.

Mine models have three distinct uses: 1. As exhibits in expositions and museums. 2. As exhibits in law suits. 3. As illustrations in teaching mining engineering. All three uses are in a sense educational. The third, or distinctively teaching function, has not been extensively developed in America as it has been abroad, chiefly because of the cost of the models and the scarcity of model makers. In connection with expositions, such as the Columbian, the Louisiana Purchase, and the Panama-Pacific, a number of very good mine and metallurgical models were prepared with funds furnished by State commissions, by mining organizations or mining companies. At the close of these expositions, some of these models have been deposited in National or State museums or in educational institutions, but too many of them haw been lost, or have been stored away in some mining company's office or in the basement of some State building, where they have been lost sight of and have gradually fallen to pieces. A visitor to a German mining school is impressed by two facts: 1. The mining laboratories are in general inferior to those in America. 2. The mining museums are infinitely superior to ours, particularly in models exhibited. One may reply to this comparison by saying that a museum is necessarily a work of time. From the historical standpoint this is, of course, true, but it is not necessarily true in connection with a working museum intended to illustrate current practice. For instance, the oldest mining school in Germany, that at Freiberg, has much excellent historical material, but very little on modern practice, while Berlin, one of the youngest German mining schools, has a most extensive and valuable collection of modern appliances and models. This is true in spite of the fact that one of the best-known model shops is at Freiberg, from which many of the models to be seen in America have come. L. D. GODSHALL, Everett, Washington: This very interesting paper cannot fail to command the attention of every one who has ever had experience in the amalgamation of gold-ores. I wish to call attention to three very important facts brought out very prominently by the paper, namely: 1. The extent of accumulation of amalgam on copper plates in the form of scale, not removable in the ordinary manner; 2. The change in the relative quantity of the two metals in the amalgam as we. recede from the battery-discharge; 3. The difference in fineness of the bullion obtained from the above-mentioned scale as compared with the bullion from the daily clean-ups. From Mr. Bayliss's figures we find that during the life of the plate in question 14,942 tons of ore were crushed, yielding amalgam of the value of $5.03 per ton, or a total value of $75,158.26. The amalgam accumulating on the plate during this time as scale, we find to have had a value of $8340.54, or $0.558 per ton of ore treated, representing 11.09 per cent. of the total amount of amalgam saved in the ordinary clean-up; or, taking the amalgam saved by daily clean-up plus the amalgam-scale as representing the total saved on this plate, or 100 per cent., we find that the daily clean-up saved 90.01 per cent., while the scale represented 9.99 per cent. The above figures do not include some additional amalgam still adhering to the plate after scale had been removed. We are told that this was not an exceptional case at the Drum Lummon, but that other plates have even yielded a third more than the one in question. The interesting query now comes up, whether this experience at the Drum Lummon is exceptional or universal at all mills; and another question arises, as to how long such an accumulation might continue,

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

Columbium, tantalum, titanium, and zirconium are present in solid waste products generated by the chlorination of rutile used for production of titanium tetrachloride (TiC14). The columbium and tantalum were separated from titanium and zirconium by liquid-liquid extraction techniques using a secondary amine. Salts of these elements are in a leach liquor produced by water leaching of mineral waste from the chlorination of rutile. This waste, produced at the rate of approximately 50,000 tons per year, is about 40 wt pct water soluble. Leach liquors, separated by filtration, were further separated into a solid fraction and a liquid fraction by pressure hydrolysis, The solid fraction containing Cb, Ta, Ti, and Zr was dissolved in HC1-HF and used as a feed solution. Columbium and tantalum were removed from the organic extractant with 1 [N] HC1. A miniature 10-stage reactor showed that the columbium and tantalum present in solution could be separated with a continuous flow.
