Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. "Acrylamide chemical grout (C3H2NO) has been successfully used for over 50 years to control groundwater and stop infiltration. This paper will address three unique projects involving the control of groundwater with each study providing special circumstances and geological conditions: encapsulation of radioactive hazardous waste in the United States, a tailings dam for a large copper/gold mine in Argentina and 27 miles of leaking subway in Canada. This report describes a computer-based model for estimating the tangible costs of injuries and deaths from work-related accidents in underground coal mines. The study undertook to identify and quantify the elements of accident costs, including field visits to coal mines, insurance carriers, and public agencies. The mathematical models developed for each tangible element of accident cost are presented in Volume I of the report. A listing of the computer programs which comprise the model and instructions for using the programs are presented in Volume II. Statistical distributions of mining family characteristics, data on 95 miners killed in underground accidents, and other basic data used to develop the model are presented in Volume III. Application of the model to a data base of 9,286 accidents which occured in underground bituminous coal mines during 1974 yielded a total of $56,900,000 in tangible costs to industry, mining families, and public agencies. Loss of income to the families of miners injured or killed in these accidents accounted for 47 percent of the total.

(communication to the Secretary*).—In that part of Mr. Wilson's paper describing the Gilman cut-and-fill system, a few features do not appear to be fully explained. In what way is the waste used for filling obtained? The text mentions that if waste is encountered when driving the filling raises, these raises are stopped until the fill is needed; that seems to suggest mining the capping for fill, which might make the backs of the stopes bad as the stopes approach the top of the ore. If, on the other hand, the fill is brought to the raises in cars, are the crosscuts that are necessary in ore or waste? Is the cost of this fill included in the stoping costs given? The second, or lower, series of stopes will present a different problem to that which the first series (under the capping) gave. Although no mention is made in the text, it would seem that the second series of stopes will have to be worked on center lines which are offset half the stope width, 20 ft., from the centers of the stopes above, in order to take advantage of the "rafter" effect of the stringers so named. How is the fill to be introduced into the lower stopes? There are no crosscuts mentioned to provide for this; or is it intended to tap the filled stopes above for the fill? In the latter case the method of control of this fill will be of interest. Ore that will admit of a stoping width of 40 ft. with the lengths mentioned in the description is stronger than any with which many mining men are familiar. The use of operations research and computer techniques continued to expand during 1967. A number of mining companies either obtained computers or were experimenting with their use through service bureaus. This trend was also evident in the Canadian mining industry. Although the annual Symposium and Short Course on Computers and Operations Research in Mineral Industries was not held in 1967, technical periodicals like MINING ENGINEERING, Mining Congress Journal and Engineering and Mining Journal stepped up their coverage on the subject. The annual AIME meeting had eight papers in two sessions and one session on Operations Research was held at the SME Fall Meeting in Las Vegas.

An overview of hydrate properties is given, with emphasis on unusual deviations from ice, the most common solid water form. Reliable sample preparation and reproduction of in situ hydrates provide the foundation for all hydrate science and engineering. Relations are given to connect the three domains in the title: (1) micro-scopic properties measured with Raman, NMR, and diffraction spectroscopy, (2) meso-scopic properties measured with single crystals, and (3) macro-scopic properties measured with pressures, temperatures, volumes, etc. A principal illustration relates micro-scopic and macro-scopic domains. Experiments provides the basis for improving statistical thermodynamics model for these compounds. To date, this model is one of the most commonly used industrial statistical thermodynamics applications, based upon the classical model of van der Waals and Platteeuw (1959). Microscopic measurements and simulations indicate model assumption improvements, resulting in the next generation of the statistical thermodynamics for improved macroscopic property prediction.

The state discharge standard for arsenic-containing wastewater which is the first kind of pollution is less than 0.5 mg/L. In fact, in a certain company, the acidic arsenic-containing wastewater in non-ferrous smelting was as high as 860 mg/L, which is far beyond the state discharge standard. Obviously, the direct release of this wastewater without further treatment would result in great hazards to the ecological environment. To aim directly at the characteristics of acidic arsenic-containing wastewater, in this study, two steps of treatment including oxidation-flocculation and removal fluoride by mixing alkaline neutralization were suggested. Through analyzing various influencing factors in treatment effects, the optimum technical conditions were obtained. The sediments after treating were recyclable and the secondary pollutions can be avoided. Moreover, the results also show that, all indexes of the effluent after treating are lower than the First Grade Standard of Integrated Wastewater Discharge (GB 8978-1996). This novel method has advantages of short flow sheet, easy operation and low cost.

Zinc impure solutions as spent electrolytes, leach liquors coming from aqueous treatment of both minerals and solid waste, need to be purified before undergoing the treatment to obtain the final product. Solvent extraction is one of the most selective operations particularly when many metallic ions are present in solution. Zinc pure solutions are frequently obtained using DZEHPA as extractant. In this work an investigation on zinc extraction effectiveness of naftenic acid was carried out. After determining the best diluent and the optimal extractant concentration, the partition coefficient was determined as a function of temperature, equilibrium pH and zinc concentration. Finally same batch tests to determine the equilibrium curves at room temperature on exhausted electrolyte coming from zinc cell were carried out by using naftenic acid, D2EHPA and TBP. The pH giving, for each extractant, the best extraction yield was selected in order to compare the equilibrium curves. Experimental results show that all the examined extractants are very effective in zinc extraction if the process conditions are appropriately selected. In order to avoid an impure solution pre- treatment and to obtain the maximum ertraction yield the appropriate solvent can be chosen.

Largest and most important of the milling plants under construction during the year is the Morenci plant of the Phelps Dodge Corp., in Arizona, where plans are being rushed for production in 1942. Grate mills will be used for fine-grinding, and in the pilot plant, classifiers of the spiral type have the preference for the closed- circuit work. The flotation units will be chiefly of the pneumatic type, with some mechanical units as auxiliaries. The Fagergren, Pan American, and Agitair machines were left in the competition as the year closed. If the absence of European markets for finished products has dislocated the mining industry, fortunately the lack of raw materials required in the beneficiation of ores has not been serious. except possibly as to the inability to import flint grinding pebbles. Some of the less important gold mines still use pebbles for grinding as is also the practice in the comminution of nonmetallics used in various industries. In 1996, lack of confidence in assaying methods and sample handling affected companies as diverse as Bre-X and Timbuktu. Share prices and the ability to raise financing are impacted when the quality of assay data is suspect. Overseas projects are subject to enhanced scrutiny when local facilities are used that are unfamiliar to brokers, financing agencies and banks. Quality control systems can be implemented but there are associated costs. These costs should reflect the risk to the mining company, investors and financiers and the size of the proposed investment. In this regard, assay control can be considered a form of insurance to enhance the value of an exploration or mining project. Providing reliable assay data in a production laboratory is challenging. Pressures such as time constraints and profitability affect data integrity. In Australia and North America, reliable assaying services have been provided by several laboratories. Mistakes are primarily due to human error but systems are available that monitor results and identify these types of errors. As the mining industry expands globally, mining companies encounter difficulties in some of these areas due to lack of infrastructure, poor communications, bureaucracy and political risk. These challenges also apply to the operation of laboratories, enhancing the risk of compromised data.

A novel, low-pressure adaptation of Praxair?s coherent jet technology utilizing CoJet lances was developed for application at Inco&apos;s Copper Cliff Smelter where oxygen is available in large tonnage quantities but only at relatively low supply pressures (< 193 kPa header pressure). The project objectives were to evaluate the effect of coherent jet technology on controlling oxygen lance accretion (?horn?) formation and to increase oxygen efficiency in the Inco Oxygen Top-Blowing Nitrogen Bottom Stirring (TBBS) MK Reactor used for converting nickel- contaminated chalcocite to semi-blister copper. This paper describes the development and subsequent implementation and testing of two CoJet lances in this application.

Pyrophyllite is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A1²Si4O10(OH)²)1 that, occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs&apos; scale.&apos; The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey12 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, (&apos;are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. Sources At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. The North Carolina deposits are in the "Carolina Slate Belt," which traverses the center of the state in a southwesterly direction. This belt varies from 8 to 50 miles in width. "Magnetic separation techniques are used extensively in mineral processing operations. Magnetic separators are robust and relatively easy to operate. As the ore get hard and low grade, fine grinding must be required mostly to allow for a high degree of mineral liberation. These processes encounter the magnetic separation process difficulty due to a significant change in the separation behavior of particles. This study investigates the effectiveness of a novel proven wet magnetic separator for the beneficiation of Lebedinsky (Russia) iron ore achieved through developing pole arrangement and tank design. Basis on the results of multiphasic simulation of a medium intensity magnetic separator (MIMS) and dense media tank using Magnetic Design Software, a new model of the MIMS separator was developed. The main of the new MIMS separator was focused on improving separation and the decreasing the number of separators in cobber stage of the plant. The new MIMS separator was tested into a pilot plant on the received samples from Lebedinsky iron ore plant. In addition to the basis on the results of the modeling, promising results of test work and previous experiences, it was claimed the unit capacity of new separator is 33.33% more than the existing separator that could decrease the number of separators. In addition, the significant energy saving in the same operational condition could be obtained without any important adverse effect on the final concentrate quality.INTRODUCTION Magnetic separation is a long-established method for the purification and removal of substances from fluids (Augusto et al., 1999; Buck et al., 2015; Hoffmann et al., 2002; Lauda et al., 2016; Lindner et al., 2010; Podoynitsyn et al., 2016; Rashidi et al., 2016), mainly in mining processing industries ranging from steel production to coal desulfurization as commercial technology (Andres, 1994; Augusto, 2002; Svoboda, 1987). High gradient magnetic separation as an effective method for recovering of weak and fine magnetic particles separation has undergone dramatic developments, and has also achieved extensive application during this time (Svoboda and Jujita, 1987). Magnetic separation operations can be categorized into high intensity as electrical (up to 20,000 gauss), Medium intensity (2000-5000 gauss) and low intensity (less than 2000 gauss) techniques. Magnetic separators offer a simple, clean and economic way to sort magnetizable ores and minerals. After pulverization, the material is run through an inhomogeneous magnetic field, where particles of different susceptibility experience different magnetic forces. The force increases with susceptibility, magnetic field and field gradient (Jongst et al., 1984).In magnetic separation, the difference in the susceptibilities of the various particulate materials is used to separate the material flow into two or more products (Wasmuth and Unkelbach, 1991). The South African Mining, Extraction, Research, Development and Innovation (SAMERDI) strategy was launched in 2019 with the goal of modernizing the mining industry. It comprises three major research initiatives: improvement in the efficiency of extraction and health and safety in current mining operations, development of fully mechanized systems to mine narrow tabular ore bodies in hard rock, and development of extraction systems to break rock without using explosives. The crosscutting Advanced Orebody Knowledge (AOK) program seeks to develop and implement drilling and geophysical technologies that can characterize the rock mass ahead of mining and identify potentially hazardous geological features. This knowledge will be integrated with information derived from seismic monitoring. Mining methods, layouts and rock support systems will be adjusted accordingly to mitigate the risk of rockbursts. Boreholes are routinely drilled ahead of mine workings using diamond-impregnated bits. The drill core is logged to identify lithology and geological structures (especially dykes and faults that may be seismogenic), sample the ore body for grade control, and detect areas that may contain water and/or flammable gas. Methods and technology to improve the efficiency of drilling and maximize the information obtained from the drilling process, borehole core, and the borehole itself are being investigated. A range of geophysical technologies are being developed to map the rock mass from the skin of the excavation to a distance of several tens of meters. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is used to map the geometry of the excavation, including prominent joint, vein and fracture sets and the presence and performance of rock support elements and systems. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is used to penetrate deeper into the rock mass and image joints, fractures bedding planes that influence the stability of the hanging and side walls. Image processing techniques known as ‘seismic attributes’ are being applied to the radargrams to improve interpretation. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and various active and passive seismic techniques (e.g. Tunnel Seismic Profiling (TSP), ambient noise tomography) achieve even greater penetration into the rock mass. Finally, machine learning is used to improve the processing and interpretation of seismic and radar data.

L. D. RICKETTS, New York, N. Y.-The advance which has been made in Smelting has been in the line of cheaper cost of handling, due to larger units and decrease in losses. At the International smelter, Mr. McGregor designed everything to handle the ore under cover. But we do find an unaccounted for loss of 0.7 per cent. of our copper, which is serious. Mr. Wallace has made a suggestion that I think metallurgists ought to know of and think about. He made it years ago-and that is that one of the chief losses is undoubtedly in the charging and discharging of the calcine cars. His idea is that possibly the dryers and heaters might be put immediately over the reverberatories So that they could discharge in conveyors. They could feed on both sides, and thereby the dust raised by discharging in the cars from the hoppers could be overcome. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-I might Say a few words on the plants we have visited So far. I was particularly struck with the cleanliness of the plants, which is next to Godliness. I noticed also that the skull-cracker arrangement they have for handling their converter slag is very good. And they have paid considerable attention to ventilation, and are taking steps to take care of the health of the men. "Safety first" has been well looked after in all the plants we have visited so far. The steel structures are right up to date, and the buildings are of the most modern type, and everything is conveniently arranged. I think the designers of the plants in the Southwest are to be congratulated on what they have done.

On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. This study revealed significantly less favorable perceptions of the existing organizational safety climate among workers in the underground coal-mining sector compared with those in the industrial-minerals and sand, stone and gravel (SSG) sectors. Consequently, it is important to consider pragmatic ways in which health and safety management systems (HSMS) in coal mines can alter processes to improve these perceptions. Given the interdependencies of safety climate factors and HSMS elements, researchers explored mineworker perceptions of the supportiveness of organizational safety climate factors among mineworkers and identified significant differences in perceptions across sectors. In this paper, we suggest that health and safety professionals in underground coal mining and organizations with fewer resources or less mature HSMSs focus on these factors to bolster support for proactive safety performance. Potential barriers to implementing or improving relevant HSMS elements and ideas to help foster more favorable perceptions of organizational safety climate are also discussed.

THE basic products of the Company are lead and zinc. Around 950 tons of these metals are produced each day. In the last decade, the production of by-products has increased to such an extent that they are now nearly as large an operation as that of the base-metals. Of the many by-products, the most objectionable, and up to a few years ago the most useless, was the sulphur. The sulphur comes in the ore from the Sullivan mine. It is in the ore chiefly as lead, zinc, and iron sulphide. By selective flotation, these three sulphides are separated into the lead concentrates, the zinc concentrates, and the mill tailings. These mill tailings contain the bulk of the iron and the sulphur. Of the 6,5CO tons of ore treated per day, about 5,000 tons are wasted to the mill tailings dump, and, while now valueless, will in future years undoubtedly be used as a source of iron and sulphur. There are about 1,500 tons of sulphur and 2,200 tons of iron per day in the tailings, and about 400 tons of sulphur left in the total concentrates. In the recovery of lead and zinc in the pure form, the first step is the roasting operation. Here, most of the sulphur is driven off as sulphur dioxide in the gases. It has always been apparent that this sulphur should be. recovered and utilized if possible. At the same time, this would cure the smoke nuisance. Because, in spite of the low concentration of sulphur dioxide and the fact that it was discharged from stacks at an elevation of 400 feet above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant had been experienced.
