A comprehensive review of the salient features of the differentiation method of rheological analysis in Poiseuille flow from its inception circa 1928 is presented. Here no initial assumptions regarding the nature of the function relating rheological parameters to observed kinematical and dynamical parameters are required in the data-analysis process. In contrast, the integration method involves interpreting flow properties in terms of a particular ideal model. It is shown that, although both methods represent modes of solution of the same integral equation, being relatively bias-free, the differentiation method offers a more discriminating procedure for rheological analysis. The application to problems involving plane Poiseuille flow is also described. INTRODUCTION In most instances, the approach to the problem of interpreting the rheological properties of various compositions as they are affected by changes in chemical or physical environment, assaying the characteristics of a particular constituent of a suspension, analyzing flow behavior in terms of interactions between components in a system, to cite but a few examples, has been in terms of what Hersey1 terms the integration method. Briefly, it consists of interpreting flow properties in terms of a particular ideal model. The usual practice of the integration method is to choose a model with a minimum number of parameters because, other things being equal, it is desirable to use the simplest model which will describe the behavior of a real material and yet be mathematically tractable for the requirements of data analysis. This expression is then substituted into an equation which relates observed kinematical and dynamical quantities, such as volume flux Q and pressure gradient ], and angular velocity and torque T, in a capillary and concentric cylinder apparatus, respectively. The rheological parameters appear on integrating, in an expression relating the pairs of observable quantities such as those just given. In many instances a particular model provides a good representation of rheological behavior over a reasonable range of compositional and environmental changes. Just as often, however, it is obvious that the interpretation of rheological changes by the integration method is not providing realistic information about changes in flow behavior. A more general method of interpreting rheological data for a given material is to make no initial assumptions regarding the nature of the function relating rheological parameters to observed kinematical and dynamical quantities, e.g., flow rate and pressure drop in capillary flow or angular velocity and torque in a rotational viscometer. This general method Hersey1 terms the differentia-ation method. Instead of integrating, one differentiates the integral equation with respect to one of the limits, i.e., one of the boundary conditions; the resulting expression contains the same observable quantities just given, their derivatives, and the rheological function evaluated at that boundary. By obtaining these derivatives from experimental data, graphically or by a computer routine, they can be substituted into the differential equation and a graphical form of the function derived. THEORY OF THE DIFFERENTIATION METHOD FOR POISEUILLE-TYPE FLOWS In this introductory paper, two flow cases which are important in viscometry are considered (one for the first time) from the differentiation method of analysis, flow in a cylindrical tube and flow between fixed parallel surfaces of infinite extent, the basic integral equations being formulated in a manner analogous to the way they originally appeared in the literature. In addition, the following ideal conditions will be assumed: (1) an absence of anomalous wall effects, (2) isotropic behavior everywhere, and (3) steady laminar flow conditions. "The roasting and gas handling circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Product from the up-stream dry grinding circuit requires roasting to maximize gold recovery. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. Double refractory is indicative of the gold being difficult to direct leach due to a combination of pyrite encapsulation and the carbonaceous preg-robbing of the ore.A very extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NO, reduction before venting to the atmosphere.The roasted calcine is quenched, neutralized and then thickened before leaching in the carbon-in-leach-circuit.INTRODUCTIONBarrick’s strategic development plan integrated the production of gold from Goldstrike’s carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1 996. Processes considered included autoclaving followed by a proprietary ammonium thiosulfate leaching process, fine grinding/autoclaving as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by then Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike’s carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated."

A hidden asset in most exploration and mining activities is data. Common practice involves the spending of large amounts of money to discover, define and prove the viability of a mining project. Some organisations have used operations research analysis and internal costing methods to allocate a value to their data and to compare the costs of data maintenance to other more tangible activities like plant and equipment maintenance. Those organisations, which do not undertake such an analysis often, have little knowledge or understanding of the extent and the worth of their data. Often the organisations lack of knowledge and understanding of the data is indicated by their failure to fully exploit or realise their opportunities. The focus of this paper is to discuss new technologies that optimise the management and security of collected and derived data. The technologies discussed are components of the software systems acQuire and MineSight.

We have gathered here in Pittsburgh, at the Nineteenth Annual Safety Congress, in order to advance the cause of safety. Although my personal inter- est in this movement alone would have been sufficient to insure my presence here, specific duties have brought me to this congress in an official capacity. My responsibilities as the head of the United States Bureau of Mines, which makes the promotion of safety in the mining and allied industries one of its major activities, necessitate my attendance. My obligations as president of the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, an organization closely allied to the bureau and which has for one of its objects the public recognition and reward of outstanding achievements in safety, require that I be present at this time. This morning, my job is to present the Holmes safety certificate to the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. First I will remind you of the nature of this safety association, named in honor of the first director of the Bureau of Mines. After Mr. Holmes' death, in 1915, a number of influential organizations banded together to commemorate the name of this leader in the conservation of human life. In order that you may appreciate the significance of an award by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, I shall read you the list of 24 national organizations which comprise its membership:

For convenience, it is divided into three parts: ( 1) a brief discussion of the marketing of iron ores, with special reference to Canadian production; (2) a summary of the main features to be considered when prospecting for or evaluating a potential iron ore deposit; and (3) an outline of the methods and procedures used in the search for the direct-shipping iron ores in the Quebec•-Labrador iron ore field.The Iron Ore MarketDue to the tremendous tonnages of high-grade direct-shipping iron ore indicated in the iron ore fields of the Quebec-Labrador and Steep •Rock areas, it might be assumed that there would have been a sharp decline in iron ore prospecting in this country. WHEN miners in the interior coal fields of the United States began the practice of blasting the coal without undercutting, or what is known as "shooting off the solid," many explosions resulted, some of them of great extent and 'violence, and attended with large loss of life. One of the means adopted for preventing this large loss of life, though not preventive of explosions, was to employ shot firers to discharge the shots when all the other employees had gone out of the mine at the end of the day's shift. This system still prevails in most of the Central and Southwestern mines. Following the disaster at Winter Quarters mine, Utah, May 1, 1900, in which 200 lives were lost, a system of firing shots electrically from outside and when the men were out of the mine was adopted at the mines of the Utah Fuel Co.1 This system has also been used in France in certain mines that are subject to instantaneous outbursts of carbonic acid gas. These outbursts generally occurred at shot-firing time, on account of the blasts releasing the gas held in crevices under high pressure. The system was also adopted at a number of other mines in Utah, at the Cokedale mine, Colorado, at the Dawson mines, New Mexico, and in some mines of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham Ala. district; and more recently in certain mines in Iowa and Kansas. At first there was considerable trouble from misfires, and in a few instances from premature firing, while men were in the mine, through the shot-firing lines becoming crossed with power lines. Fortunately, however, no loss of life resulted from such premature firing within the knowledge of the writers, and latterly this danger has been reduced to a minimum by certain measures of precaution. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.

THE Homestake mine is situated in Whitewood mining district, in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota, in the city of Lead, Lawrence County. The entire property, comprising 557 lode claims with a total area of 3343 acres, is held under United States Patent. The older claims were 300 by 1500 ft. under local regulations, the newer ones 600 by 1500 ft. The Homestake was discovered April 9, 1876, by Moses and Fred Manuel, and Jake Harney, who were drawn into the northern hills, from the Custer placer district, by news of the discovery of rich placer deposits in Deadwood Gulch. They located a number of additional lode claims and, in a short time, the whole country was covered with locations. The Manuel brothers built an arrastre the following winter and took out $5000. The next year the Homestake lode was sold to Senator George Hearst and associates, who organized the Homestake Mining Co. Other companies were formed to exploit other groups of claims and at one time five companies were operating on this deposit, the Father DeSmet, the Deadwood-Terra, the Caledonia, the Highland, and. the Homestake Mining Co. These companies, however, have been merged into the Homestake Mining Company. The first stamp mill, known as the "Eighty Mill," commenced operation on July, 12, 1878, and production has been nearly continuous since that time.

The objective of this research work is to increase the drilling ratio represented in tons per drilled meter (ton/m) to reduce mining costs. One of the key characteristics of this research is the use of the ITH (in-the-hole) drilling rig with a water-powered hammer, also known as Wassara™. The patented Wassara™ in-the-hole hammer is powered by high-pressure water instead of air. To reach the objective, a new design of the blast pattern was implemented considering the following: Burden from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.8 m (9.2 ft) Spacing from 1.7 m (5.6 ft) to 2.7 m (8.9 ft) Drill diameter from 89 mm (3.5”) to 102 mm (4”) Drilling length from 15 m (49 ft) to 30 m (98 ft) Borehole deviation < 2% The result of this new design is the optimization of the drilling ratio (ton/m); having as a baseline 5.2 ton/m with traditional equipment and obtaining 13.7 ton/m with the ITH drilling, which generates annual savings of $2.43M.

This paper describes the in-situ performance of two IFS powered support installations at Betws and Penallta Collieries in the South Wales Coalfield, United Kingdom. Intensive monitoring of all powered support functions, strata movement, support/strata interaction and coal seam disturbance permitted an extensive evaluation of powered support performance for all periods of the mining cycle. The influence of support design, support rating, face design, proximate strata and scam section upon support and operating performance are discussed. In-situ performance is compared to design specification and to the requirements of Production Instruction 1982/6. Aspects which show significant variation are highlighted. Particular attention is drawn to the precise analysis of support/strata interaction in the form of canopy and base loading profiles. This illustrates the influence of support rating and configuration in determining the interaction of the canopy and base with the proximate strata. Extensometric monitoring of the coalface highlights the potential zones of disturbance within the seam which allied with support position monitoring provides an accurate basis for theoretical considerations of support loading. Conclusions are drawn, the application of which may enhance the performance and operation of IFS supports in thin to medium sections.

In July of 1996, the Kroll process began production again at TIMET&apos;s Henderson, NV, manufacturing facility. This, after being shut down for several years due to low market demand for titanium. Faced with limited pond capacity and increasing costs for water and wastewater disposal and storage; process changes were made to recycle water used to wash Kroll titanium sponge back into the sponge leaching process. This idea was revisited from 1992-93, when three consecutive attempts to recycle water for this application were unsuccessful due to early pump failure. Since it was uncertain why previous attempts failed, a complete understanding of the existing system was first sought. This included reviewing piping and flow diagrams; taking field measurements for all the piping, valves, and fittings; analyzing the wastewater composition; and modeling the fluid dynamics and control of the system. The fluid dynamics of the system were modeled by breaking the piping network up into nodes and applying the Bernoulli equation to each segment. The fluid flowrate control valves were modeled for this purpose also and the models were used to help specify the required processing equipment and control ranges and tolerances. Once the project was completed, an operating procedure was prepared for operation, startup, and shutdown of the washer water recycle system.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated a teleoperated continuous mining machine for deep mining in thin-seam applications as low as 1 m. Teleoperation increases the safety of mining machine operators because it removes the operator from the face, an area of immediate hazards to safer outby locations. By using teleoperation, the miner can avoid many including unexpected roof falls that can maim or kill miners instantly, methane and coal dust explosions that can be ignited with just a small spark or flame, adverse health effects from miners breathing coal and silica dust, adverse long-term inner ear damage from loud noise pollution, and other hazards related to heavy mining equipment moving about in confined underground roadways. This report presents the surface evaluation results of a teleoperated control system.

This report contains the results of an analysis of the Logan oilfield, Hocking County, Ohio, and predicts the recovery of oil from the Clinton sand by waterflooding. Core analyses, electrical and radioactivity well-survey logs, reservoir-fluid analysis, and geologic and production data were used for this study. Considered in the evaluation were the reservoir geometry, depth, lithology, continuity of the rock properties, fluid saturations, fluid characteristics, rock wettability, and relative permeability-fluid saturation relationships. The study indicates that a properly engineered waterflood should recover approximately 135 barrels per acre-foot of effective sand. The predicted recovery warrants the initiation of a pilot waterflood in this field.

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problem in soft ground tunneling. It is important to attempt to make an assessment of the nature and quantity of the boulders, although in many cases, it will be impossible to do so with great accuracy. Boulders, can pose major problems for TBMs in terms of slowing down or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. Although proper selection of the TBM and the cutterhead can reduce the risks, ground uncertainties still cannot be eliminated. The paper reviews a case study of a 3480 mm diameter EPB-TBM in Toronto utilized for completion of 2.5 km tunnel in Glacial Till, crossing the CP railway, HWY 401, a creek, and a confined aquifer. Alignment consists of multiple horizontal curves including small radius curves (r=210 m) at shafts breakthrough. An unexpected boulder cluster lead the contractor to experience extreme damages to the screw conveyor, RFJ system and causing a crack in main motor plate which resulted in losing one of the six main motors. This paper reviews contractor’s solutions and includes discussion on specific claim resolution method used in this project that can be of great value in preparation of specification and GBR for similar projects.

In the process of pillar extraction, pillars are seldom if ever extracted completely. The pillar remnants, or snooks, play an important role in the extraction process. At the working face, they need to be stable to provide a measure of support in the immediate area. Further back, they have to fail in a controlled manner to prevent undue load build-up on the pillars that have not yet been extracted. The stability condition at the working area is the result of interaction between the stability of the pillar and that of the roof rock. It is shown that the primary mode of roof layer failure is by bending induced tension. Direct tension can be excluded in most practical conditions, and only in exceptional cases will the first failure be in shear mode. Panel spans required to cause the first goaf to be formed, predicted using analytical considerations, are of the same order as has been observed in practice. Once the first goaf has formed, the horizontal stress is reduced and failure will occur at more frequent intervals. It is shown that bending induced tension is the most likely mode of failure in an unjointed roof layer. In roof layers with a high frequency of weak or uncemented jointing, failure can be expected to occur at spans equal to the joint spacing. In this context, failure will occur at the smallest of the spans required to induce tensile roof failure and the joint spacing. A fundamental procedure to evaluate the likely roof layer failure in a stacked beam system is developed. This can to be used to estimate the loading condition on snooks. It is shown that snooks assist in stabilizing the immediate roof beam. The sizes and positions of the snooks relative to the position of the next pillar to be stooped, control the magnitude of the contribution to stability. The further the snook is from the next pillar, and the larger it is, the greater the contribution to the stability of the immediate roof. Under the condition of loading by the immediate, continuous roof beam, the position and size of a single snook controls the load acting on it. The closer it is to the nearest solid, provided that the roof overhang extends beyond the snook, the greater the load on it. However, once the immediate roof beam fails, the loading conditions change. The snook is then loaded by the tributary area load. A procedure is developed to assess the condition of snooks for different situations. Using the fundamental considerations developed in this paper, snooks can be designed to be stable during the active mining phase in their immediate vicinity, but to fail once the next line of pillars has been extracted.

"This study presents the results of three laboratory experiments on pressure balancing carried out at the University of Utah’s coal mine ventilation model. The model includes simulations of two working areas, one longwall mine gob, and a set of stoppings and seals. It also includes a pressure chamber between the longwall face and the gob. The model is ventilated by one main fan and one bleeder fan. A carbon dioxide injection system, equipped with flow control valves operated by a microprocessor, is used to pressurize the chamber and to maintain the pressure in the chamber slightly higher than that of the gob. During each experiment, fan pressures and stopping resistances were changed, the carbon dioxide injection rate was regulated, and the differential pressures across the stoppings were monitored so that the chamber pressure is always kept slightly higher than that the gob pressure. Result of these experiments are reported in this paper. INTRODUCTION Spontaneous combustion (Sponcom) is a safety hazard in underground coal mines. The history of coal mining in the US is replete with mine fires and explosions. Sponcpm accounts for approximately 17% of the total number of fires recorded in the U.S. since 1990. In the U.S., by law, worked out areas in coal mines must be either ventilated by a bleeder system or isolated by explosion proof seals. Experience has shown that seals are not airtight structures and that they allow some leakage of air into or out of the gob. In fact, seals “breathe in and breathe out” with changes in barometric pressure (Francart 1997, and Chalmers 2010). These changes in pressure affect not only the methane emission rate but also the ingress of oxygen to the gob, the lower the pressure behind seals is, the higher the ingress of oxygen. In mines ventilated by a U-tube exhaust system, the gob is often kept under negative pressure. Under these circumstances, an increase in barometric pressure may cause an influx of fresh air into the gob. This quantity may be sufficient to start self-heating of the coal, which can lead to spontaneous combustion. Depending on the coal characteristics and the ventilation conditions, self-heating of coal can start at temperatures as low as 35 ºC. If the heat is not removed it will increase the coal temperature leading to ignition and fire. The risk of Sponcom fires can be reduced by isolating the mine gob using rated seals, and implementing a suitable ventilation system. However, isolation seals are not airtight structures, thus some leakage of air is expected unless the pressure in the gob is neutralized. The alternative is to use a pressure balancing system. This requires a thorough knowledge of the ventilation system, the seal/stopping construction techniques, the airflow behavior in the gob area, and the gas build-up behind the seal line."

Repelling charges are small explosive charges detonated to frighten and drive fish away from a blasting zone just prior to detonation of a major explosive charge. Use of repelling charges has been recommended by natural resource agencies to mitigate the effects of submerged explosives. Blasting companies have used this technique in a "good faith effort" to reduce potential damages to aquatic resources. It has been assumed that noise or pressure generated by the small charge will drive fish from the immediate area, thereby reducing impacts from the much larger and potentially more-damaging blast.

Powered haulage continues to be a large safety concern for the mining industry, accounting for approximately 50%of the mining fatal accidents every year. Among these fatal accidents, haul-truck-related accidents are the most common, with 6 of 28 and 6 of 27 fatal accidents occurring in 2017 and 2018, respectively. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur and what can be done to prevent them, researchers reviewed the 91 haul-truck-related fatal accidents that occurred in the USA from 2005 to 2018 and performed bow-tie analyses using the final reports published by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The analyses explore the context of the accidents with a focus on the initiating event, event outcome, hazards present, and possible preventative and mitigative controls. Overall, the vast majority of the accidents resulted in a haul truck colliding with the environment, and the majority of these events were initiated by loss of situational awareness or loss of control. The majority of the hazards were related to design and organizational controls. The results of this study suggest a need to investigate operator decision-making and organizational controls and to focus on improving design and operation controls such as mine design and operational procedures.
