The potential for adverse surface settlement during tunnelling in soil and rock poses a significant risk to the successful completion of any tunnelling project. Undesirable ground movement may lead to unacceptable level of damage to surface infrastructure, buildings and the environment, resulting in safety concerns as well as causing significant delays and costs to a project. One of the empirical methods which is commonly used to predict surface settlement in the early stages of a project’s development is the volume loss approach as described by Mair, Taylor and Burland, 1996. This method was developed for use in soft ground; however it has also been applied in weathered and soft rock to provide an initial indication of potential surface settlements along a proposed tunnel alignment. This paper presents some initial thoughts on the use of this method in weathered and soft rock and the associated limitations which need to be taken into consideration when interpreting the results. Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

Boliden Harjavalta Oy has produced copper since 1945. The essential idea has always been continuous development of process efficiency and environmental friendliness by using the Best Available Techniques (BAT). The ongoing development step is to increase the production capacity up to 210 000 tpy of anode copper and 155 000 tpy of copper cathode. One of the focal issues in this action is modernization of the copper refinery to utilize permanent cathode technology. This paper describes the refinery project and the technology used in it.

Based on field observations and physical modeling of simulated materials, the dynamic equilibrium principle on the whole interaction process between the surrounding rocks and support of large deformation roadways in coal mines has been developed. It explains the methods of forming the bolted strata and its changing load capacity with deformation. It also points out the factors and conditions for forming the bolted strata as follows: (1) many entries in coal mines are subject to large deformation. During their service life, it goes through the following process, elastic > plastic > fiacture > broken > loosening, etc. During this dynamic process, the mechanisms of supporting structure are changing and therefore the interaction between support and rocks experiences a process of dynamic equilibrium. Furthermore, the required supporting force for stabilizing the surrounding rocks shows overall decreasing trend; (2) the bolted strata is a special supporting structure consisting of bolt, rock skin protection devices and rock strata within the bolted horizon. As deformation increases, the supporting structure of the broken strata within the bolted horizon experiences a process of periodic change, from equilibrium > not equilibrium > equilibrium. Corresponding to this change, the supporting capacity of the bolted strata also fluctuates and gradually decreases; (3) under the bolted strata, the stability of a large deformation roadway is dynamic and step-wise; and (4) the formation of bolted strata, especially bolted broken strata depends on the existence of compressive force. Supporting the bolted strata is not constrained by the quality of the surrounding rocks. It has broad range of application.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No.4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10-20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove grindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275" C to 325" C range.

A review and summary of the results of 120 coal sampling system bias tests is presented. This review supports new methodology using multivariate statistics currently being considered by ISO TC27 SC4. The current difficulties with ISO 13909-8 are explained and the logic behind the current new working draft is discussed in detail. Bias was detected in nearly 36 per cent of tests reviewed, suggesting that much improvement is needed in designing, maintaining and monitoring the performance of sampling systems in order to avoid sampling bias.CITATION:Rose, C D, 2012. INTRODUCTION Throughout the world, the caving mining methods of ore-draw under the overlying waste rock are sublevel caving in Sweden, block caving in U.S.A. and forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill-pillar in U.S.S.R. These caving methods are of high efficiency, low cost and large production (especially the block caving method) when compared to opencast mining. From the ore production of all under- ground mines, the largest annual production of underground metalliferous mines in the world is caving methods. The sublevel caving in Kiruna Iron Mine of Sweden has reached annual ore production over 20 million tons in 1974. The block caving in Climax Molybdenum Mine and San Manuel Copper Mine of U.S.A. both have produced about 40 thou- sand tons of ore per day in 1971. At the same time, the productivity of Kiruna was 12 thousand tons of ore per man-year, Climax 42.8 tons (48.3 short tons) per man-shift and San Manuel 29.01 tons (32.1 short tons) per man-shift. The main feature of this group of mining methods is the underground extraction of ore from beneath overlying caveable waste rock. Since the loss and dilution of ore are inherent (sometimes to a great extent), the control of ore-draw in these methods as com- pared with other methods is very important. Consequently, concerned Universities and Research Institutes have devoted great amounts of research on ore-draw theory and control management which has provided positive results to mine production, and has apparently promoted the development of the caving methods. During 1979 in China, metalliferous underground mines accounted for 15.22% of the total iron ore produced, while also accounting for 56% of total non-ferrous production. According to the mining methods, sub level caving in the principal underground iron mines counted for about 56.74% of total principal underground iron mine production, but only about 1% of total non-ferrous underground mine production. Relative to forced block caving and sublevel caving with sill pillar, the Chinese non-ferrous under- ground mines estimated about 35% of total non-ferrous underground mine production from these two methods, mainly from the latter. From the trend of development of underground metalliferous mines in China, the percentage of production in caving will be increased in the future, especially in block caving and forced block caving which have already been given great attention in the mining circle. In these types of mining methods the ore is drawn from the stope under a large area of overlying waste rock, which complicates the basic regulation and control of ore-draw, but provides lower loss and dilution than sublevel caving. Because of these reasons, the Kiruna Iron Mine in Sweden is intending to change its sublevel caving by testing a sublevel shrinkage caving method and considering a large area of ore-draw beneath the stope as an advantage. Therefore, the basic regulation and control management of ore-draw under a large area, as practiced in China, will be discussed in this paper. BASIC REGULATION OF ORE- DRAW FROM CAVING STOPE The aim of studying ore-draw under a large area of overlying waste rock is to se- cure a planned draw schedule that guarantees a certain plane of interface between ore and waste rock, and controls the change of its shape in spatial position for reducing ore loss and dilution during the draw process. Presently, the ellipsoid theory is comparatively near the actual attitude of ore-draw from the cave. 1. Ore Drawn Out from Single Drawpoint Laboratory testing and practical experience all show that after a certain amount of ore has been drawn out from a drawpoint, its original shape in the stope before drawing is more or less similar to an ellipsoid, hence the name "draw ellipsoid." This draw ellipsoid is cut at the bottom by a horizontal plane corresponding to the raise of the drawpoint, and its volume can be calculated by the following formula:

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

A laboratory study was conducted on continuous precipitation of copper, cadmium, mercury and arsenic using thiourea, thioacetamide, sodium sulfide and ammonium sulfide as precipitating agents. Depending on the experimental conditions the metals precipitate with the sulfide donors at different orders and rates. These differences were employed as a basis of several techniques for continuous separation of copper and arsenic, cadmium and arsenic, mercury and copper, and copper, mercury and arsenic. The separation of the metals from industrial waste solutions was also studied. The precipitates obtained were inspected using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, atomic absorption spectrometer and plasma particle counter.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.Due to several major stope overbreak events at Toguraci, the mining method and sequence was reviewed. The method was changed from a bottom up Avoca stoping approach using waste rock as fill material and leaving sill pillars, to a top down open stope method using paste fill without sill pillars.The revised mine plan originally had stoping progressing from the current level to the base of reserves followed by extraction of the sill pillars in the upper levels at the end of mine life. Geotechnical modelling was conducted on the revised mine plan and it was recommended that the sill pillars be taken early due to the risk of them overstressing and being difficult to recover if left until the end of mine life. The backfill material above the sill pillars is unconsolidated run-of-mine development waste rock or unconsolidated rock fill (URF).Due to earlier attempts to extract sill pillars under URF not being successful in the upper areas of the mine, it was stipulated that the URF above the five remaining pillars must be consolidated prior to stoping. Cost benefit analysis showed this to be justifiable due to the high-grade nature of the ore locked up in the pillars.Grout was initially planned to be injected in one pass through self-drilling anchors (SDA) in a 2.5 m pattern. Initial attempts to do this failed due to the SDA aperture and grout consistency. A modified method was employed using poly pipe installed into open holes that were drilled through the sill pillar and into the URF from below. Repeated application at each location ensured full grout consolidation. Drill holes were used to confirm grout thickness as well as add more grout. Design thickness was based on stress analysis.Despite different URF types being present due to varying quantities of fines, the process was similar for each area. The presence of paste in the URF of one target affected the quantity of grout it received.With a design thickness of 4–5 m of consolidation in the URF, depending on stope width and dip, each consolidated pillar (to date) maintained integrity during the stope operation. T HE ore-dressing problem at Tul Mi Chung is complicated by the unusually complex nature of the ores. These come from replacement ore- bodies in limestone at the contact with a granite batholith, and contain copper, gold, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, iron, arsenic, zinc, and lead, the first two metals constituting the principal sources of profit. Iron is present as pyrite, magnetite, and hematite. Arsenic occurs both as mispickel and lollingite (FelAsa), the latter carrying a certain amount of finely divided gold. The gangue minerals are those typical of limestone con- tact-metamorphism and include a large percentage of garnet, together with diopside, serpentine, calcite, epidote, zoisite, actinolite, 'mica and other minerals. A part of the gold occurs in a free state; some is combined with chalcopyrite and lollingite, and a consider- able proportion is contained in the pyrite. Researches towards the improvement of recovery have been energetically conducted since 1915. Amalgamation, gravity concentrating tables, vanners, can- vas plants, etc., have all been tried and discarded in favor of flotation. It was very quickly established that fine grinding was essential for satisfactory recovery. This was and is still accomplished in Hardinge ball and pebble mills. A comparative test showed that when the ore was crushed to the point at which it contained 20 to 26 per cent. coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was only 55.9 per cent., whereas when crushed so that only 11 to 15 per cent. was coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was increased to 82.5 per cent. No particular difficulty was ever experienced in making a satisfactory recovery of copper but the losses in gold were considered serious and led to the investigation described in this paper.

"Laboratory study of the behaviour• of binary coal blends shows that coke strength is more closely dependent on the distribution of ""reactive"" oxygen in the parent coals than on their proximate, elemental or petrographic compositions, and it also appears possible to qualitatively predict coke strength from information about reactive oxygen. Proceeding from this recognition, experiments were carried out to test the possibility of preparing metallurgical cokes from binary blends in which non-caking hvb coal was substantially freed of reactive oxygen by prior heat t1•eatment under controlled conditions. The results indicate that such blends can yield surprisingly strong cokes and that coke strength may be amenable to further improvements by modifying the size distribution of the pre-heated component and the rate at which it is charred."

"IntroductionCIRCULAR structures on the Arctic islands were first noticed early after World War II. During the indexing of the 1950 Royal Canadian Air Force photographs their occurrence was brought to the attention of the Geological Survey of Canada by Mr. W. B. Waugh, Surveyor General. As a result, I. C. Brown ( 195l) of the Geological Survey of Canada studied the air photographs of these structures and discussed theories that might explain their origin. The author, as a member of the Geological Survey of Canada, spent several months in 1952 and 1953 in reconnaissance study of the geology of Ellef Ringnes island, using the Isachsen meteorological station as a base. Twelve days in the summer of 1953 were spent mapping the Isachsen dome and adjacent areas. The Isachsen dome, one of several similar structures occurring on Ellef Ringnes island, is situated 35 miles southeast of the meteorological station.PhysiographyEllef Ringnes island is a mature, stream dissected plain having an average elevation of about 400 feet. The surface of the plain is undulating with a relief of about 150 feet; only a few of the numerous streams that form a dendritic drainage pattern have eroded valleys this deep. Long, low, cuesta escarpments cross' the plain, which is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Lower Cretaceous and possibly younger age. The sedimentary strata have a low regional dip to the southeast; exceptions are found in the vicinity of the domes, where the strata are up-turned, and in the plateau region, northeast of Deer bay, where they are flat lying. The plateau, which is underlain in large part by basalt, is deeply dissected and has an average elevation of 1,000 feet."

"The Witwatersrand Basin is the heart of South Africa’a gold mining industry. The cluster of gold mines located in the Witwatersrand Basin generates a significant amount of mine tailings, which have adverse effects on the environment and ecological systems. In addition, disposal costs are very high. The exponential population growth in the Witwatersrand area has resulted in pressure on the reserves of traditional building materials. Quarrying for natural construction material is very expensive and damages the landscape. This work therefore examines the use of gold mine tailings in the production of bricks.Different mixing ratios of gold tailings, cement, and water were used. The resulting bricks were then cured in three different environments - sun dried, oven dried at 360°C, and cured in water for 24 hours. The bricks were then tested for unconfined compressive strength, water absorption, and weight loss. The results showed that the mixture with more cement than tailings had a compressive strength of approximately 530 kN/m2. It was also found that the best brick curing system was in a water environment. Bricks made from tailings cost more than conventional bricks because of the higher quantity of cement used, but the manufacturing process consumes less water. Overall, the results indicated that gold mine tailings have a high potential to substitute for the natural materials currently used in brickmaking.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc. "A combined shaft-electric furnace for the smelting of ores and the melting of metallized iron pellets is being developed. The materials are preheated, and in some cases pre-reduced, in the shaft before being transferred to the electric furnace, where melting or smelting is completed. It has been demonstrated that this combination of equipment will enable much of the relatively expensive electrical energy to be replaced by cheaper energy in the form of oil or natural gas, and preliminary experiments indicate that the total energy requirements for a melting or smelting operation are significantly reduced. Projections based on results obtained from the preliminary experiments indicate that further improvements will be possible when certain modifications to the equipment are completed."

"INTRODUCTION For many automation and safety tasks in open cut and underground scenarios it is crucial to have highly reliable distance measurements at hand. These measurements can for instance be used to obtain the exact position of a machine in one-, two- or even three dimensions. Research and development has shown interest in the ultra-wide-band technology (UWB) in recent years. While for this technology short range, high speed data transfer is the current main research focus, the technology can also be used for highly accurate ranging applications. Due to the use of a very wide frequency band, it is robust against disturbances of many types (e.g. EMC, rain, dust etc.) and is therefore attractive for the use in mining applications. The wide frequency band also offers benefits for ranging applications. Especially in environments with strong multipath problems such as in underground mines it is possible to focus on the dominant signal propagation path, thus increasing the reliability of the measurements. [1] State-of-the-art UWB ranging equipment claims precision within the range of a couple of centimeters and working ranges of more than hundred meters. At the Institute for Mining and Metallurgical Machinery (IMR) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany a modern UWB system was examined in several laboratory and real life tests to examine the feasibility of UWB bases ranging equipment in mining applications. UWB TECHNOLOGY The term ultra-wide-band denotes radio systems that use an ultra-wide frequency band. A common definition for UWB radio systems is that it needs to work on a frequency bandwidth of more than 500 MHz or a bandwidth equal to 20% or more of the center frequency [1]. Due to the ultra-wide frequency bandwidth UWB systems overlap the frequency spectrum of narrow band radio technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other mobile communication systems which use a defined carrier frequency onto which information is modulated on (e.g. by using frequency or phase modulation). In order to not conflict with these other radio applications, it needs to be ascertained that the transmission power of a UWB system on a given frequency is so low that narrow band systems are not affected by it. As opposed to this only a small fraction of the UWB system’s bandwidth is affected by the narrow band system. The unaffected remaining bandwidth is sufficient to reconstruct the original signal, even if additional noise is present. Figure 1 shows the power spectral densities of popular radio standards [6], [7], [8]. A significant driver of research and development of UWB systems has been wireless high bandwidth communication. Using an ultra-wide frequency band is highly desirable here, as the channel capacity is dependent on the bandwidth. So far systems have been realized especially for short distances (e.g. wireless USB or Wireless HDMI) but beyond that, communication systems for long distances (several kilometers) are possible [2]. Advances in semiconductor technology led to a reduction in power dissipation of such systems. This enabled higher integration levels which in turn facilitated smaller solution sizes for space constrained applications [3]. Nowadays, UWB is also used for high-precision ranging applications [4], [5]."

Pacific Rim markets for export coal already represent a larger market than the total tonnage imported into the European Community countries and they will continue to expand. The largest importers will continue to be in the sector comprising Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Tai- wan. It is likely that the total Pacific Rim markets will reach 206 m.t.p.a. by 1990 and 290 m.t.p.a. by 2000, with the major growth in steam coal demand. Australia has an efficient coal industry, represents a stable long term source of supply and is favourably situated geographically to continue to be the largest single supply source.

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, accounting for 15 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions in 2005. Since methane has a much shorter atmospheric lifetime than carbon dioxide (CO2), reducing methane emissions can achieve considerable climate benefits over the next 25 years. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane and CH4 released to the atmosphere from gassy mines during coal extraction is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. Methane (CH4) emissions from coal mining activities constitute approximately 6% of total global human-related methane emissions. Coal mines around the world have recognized that methane is a clean energy resource that can be captured and used productively. Coal mine methane (CMM) is currently utilized for power generation, natural gas pipeline injection, vehicle fuel, industrial process feed stocks, on-site mine boilers, mine heating, and home heating distribution systems. Upgrading mine degasification systems can often improve gas quality and create favorable project economics. The United States has been a leader in coal mine methane (CMM) recovery and use since the 1990?s. There are now 15 projects at active underground mines in the U.S., as well as 26 abandoned mine methane projects. Recovery and use projects at active underground U.S. mines reduced methane emissions by approximately 49 Billion cubic feet in 2010. In an exciting new development, a ventilation air methane (VAM) mitigation project at the CONSOL McElroy mine in West Virginia was installed by Verdeo. Operational since September 2012, this is the first commercial-scale VAM project in the U.S. and the project will reduce methane emissions by an estimated 920 MMCF/yr. As part of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, actual data on methane emissions from underground coal mines was collected for the first time in 2011 and reported to U.S. EPA in September 2012. The data collected will help inform stakeholders, particularly the underground coal mining industry, of CMM emission sources on public and private lands. The detailed data will also shed light on the specific sources of methane from active underground coal mines and highlight project opportunities for the U.S. coal industry. The paper will cover U.S. coal mine methane emissions, U.S. CMM utilization and destruction projects, Federal policies and State incentives for CMM capture and utilization. 2011 CMM data from the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program Subpart FF will be analyzed and compared with previous U.S. Greenhouse Gas Inventory estimates. Other developments, including the voluntary carbon market, will be discussed.

In the past decade, many hardrock surface miners have revegetated dumps and tailings ponds to allow those waste disposal areas to blend more easily with the surrounding landscapes. Efforts have also been made to more creatively use the flat land resulting from the disposal of overburden and tailings. However, the mines which serve the best post-mining land uses are those that have been preplanned to incorporate such end uses. To more fully explore such a philosophy, interdisciplinary team from The University of Arizona conducted a study during 1974 and 1975 of six open pit copper mines in the Santa Cruz River Basin south of Tucson, Arizona for the purpose of investigating both interim and end-use possibilities for mine waste disposal areas. Among other reasons for the study, it was felt that alternatives for such waste areas would be more socially acceptable than barren dumps or tailings ponds. The team, known as the Mines Project Group, consisted of architects, engineers, and hydrologists. As it would have been economically infeasible to move the existing waste rock dumps or tailings ponds, preplanning was limited to the disposal of waste generated after the inception of the project. To better present their concepts, architecture professors Kenneth Clark and Fred Matter constructed a large-scale cardboard relief model of the mines and the surrounding Santa Cruz River Valley (1). The model was built at a scale of 1:12 000 (1 in = 1000 ft) with 30.48 m (100 ft) contour intervals and covered an area of 40.23 km by 32.18 km (25 miles by 20 miles) in scaled area. The mines being studied were cut into the model, but the proposed waste dumps and tailings ponds were built separately so different disposal configurations could be evaluated.

SUMMARY The Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) hosts the most valuable deposit of polymetallic nodules yet discovered. Understanding the geology of this deposit is key to its effective exploration and mining. Nautilus Minerals (via its subsidiary Tonga Offshore Mining Limited; TOML) has been progressing its understanding of the relationship between seafloor morphology/structure and nodule abundance/morphology, both locally (within its contract areas), and globally (across the CCZ and the span of its contract areas of almost 70% of the CCZ). We present the first results of a project with the aim of developing a method to quickly and accurately map seafloor morphology/structure (Tectonic Subcomponent scale) without the necessity for high resolution seafloor multibeam data. Furthermore, the results presented here will allow a first attempt in understanding the relationship between seafloor geomorphologically-defined zones and plate-scale tectonics of the CCZ and adjacent plate segments. INTRODUCTION A relationship between the type of geochemical active layer and nodule abundance/morphology has long been understood (ISA, 2010). Consideration of the range of differing nodule types found within, but especially between, the TOML contract areas allowed Parianos and Pomee (2017) to refine this relationship further via interpreted thickness and dynamism of the geochemically active layer. The scale of the deposit, both in terms of space and time is staggering (a 10-20 cm thick deposit, spanning almost 4500 km, varying within a circa 10 Ma period), but a segment wide geological map may one day prove to reflect controls on nodule formation and distribution.
