The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. With the ever increasing demand for Finer powders by industry there has been a continuing effort by air classifier manufacturers to improve and offer machinery capable of producing these fine powders. Common to these classifiers is the use of a multivaned rotor through which passes all of the air used to transport the particles to be classified. Rotor revolutions per minute and the amount of air passing through the rotor are the main variables in determining the particle sizes which will be able to pass through the spinning rotor. A simplified equation derived by setting the air drag force carrying a particle through the rotor equal to the centrifugal force due to the spinning rotor's action on the entering air and particle is: Diameter of Particle = [ ] Where K is a function of air viscosity, particle configuration, rotor and blade configuration; RPM is rotor revolutions per minute; M3/sec. is air quantity passing through the openings between the rotor blades.

In this investigation, the possibility of physical separation methods such as attrition scrubbing, hydro-cycloning and also reverse flotation were investigated for silica and calcite removal from relatively low grade kaolin. The head sample was provided by the Iran China Clay Company and the major oxides contained in the head sample were Al2O3, SiO2, CaO and Fe2O3 with grades of 15.07%, 71.05%, 4.35% and 0.52% respectively. The liberation degree of calcite and iron impurities from kaolin particles were over 80% for particles finer than 210µm and 53µm respectively. Attrition scrubbing tests were carried out with scrubber cell of the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Laboratory scale hydro cyclone was applied for the beneficiation of kaolin. Attrition scrubbing tests with control screen of 106µm did not achieve the desirable yield for purification of this kaolin sample, but hydro cyclone experiments resulted in better results. Hydro cyclone with 2.54 cm diameter used and the only variable was the cyclone inlet pressure ranging from 68.65kPa to 98.07kPa. The best inlet pressure was found to be 68.65kPa. Based on the optimized condition, Al2O3 and CaO amount in the hydro-cyclone overflow was 23% and 1.47% respectively. However weight recovery of the overflow in each cyclone experiment was less than 30% and multi stages of hydro-cyclones would have to be applied for higher weight recovery and better yield. All of the flotation tests were carried out in the conventional Denver flotation cell model D-12. Reverse floatation tests for calcite removal were carried out under alkali pH based on full factorial design of variables in 2 levels including one center point. The three parameters tested were collector dosage (gr/ton), pH and depressant dosage (gr/ton). The collected data from flotation tests were analyzed and optimized collector and depressant dosage were 1000 gr/ton and optimized pH was 8.5. Under the above mentioned conditions, calcite removal was about 75% and CaO content in the final product was reduced from 4.35% to 1.33%. However calcite removal will increase to more than 83% if the feed particle size in flotation tests is reduced from 210µm to finer than 53µm. Finally after optimization, the best working condition and possible flow sheet were developed.

Evolution over decades and progress over last five years have been made in many topics of interests to rock mechanics, geosciences, physics, and multi-disciplinary interactions in underground research laboratories and development facilities, as well as in underground energy recoveries and environmental assessments. Rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering advances are associated with quantifications of disturbed/damaged zones and rock alternation and bursting processes and creation of underground spaces and accesses associated with deepening of shafts and lengthening of tunnels. Geophysics and earth sciences advances are associated with continuing collections of seismic, electromagnetic, and gravitational data and conducting various thermal, hydrological, mechanical, chemical, and biological investigations, both separately, simultaneously, and in different coupled ways. Astroparticle and underground physics advances are associated with many long term experiments to detect rare events and needs for increasing larger and deeper halls to accommodate next generation detectors, shielings, and isolations. There are also increasing interesting in underground settings to explore multidisciplinary and inter-disciplinary sciences and technologies. Energy and environmental sciences and assessments have evolved from traditional oil and gas focuses to recent activities associated with green resources and alternative recovery/disposal strategies. The evolution and progress of these interdependent and related fields are discussed in this quadrennial Congress.

A BRIEF SKETCH OF THE DAVE JOHNSTON MINE The Dave Johnston coal mine is located near the southwestern extremity of the Powder River Basin in central Wyoming. This mine is operated entirely for the purpose of furnishing fuel to the 750,000 Kw Dave Johnston power generation station located five miles east of Glenrock, Wyoming on the North Platte River about 24 miles east of Casper, Wyoming. Coal is delivered to the power plant by a company-owned railroad moving the coal 15 miles downgrade from the mine to the power plant. The mine first belonging to Pacific Power & Light Company has now been transferred to Northern Energy Resources Company (NERCO), a mining subsidiary of Pacific Power & Light Company. The coal beds which make up the field at the Dave Johnston Mine are locally referred to as the School and Badger seams and occur beneath gently rolling terrain in the Fort Union formation. The School seam is found approximately 180 feet beneath the Badger in the southern portion of the field and about 110 feet beneath the Badger towards the north. The coal beds dip down toward the northeast on about a four percent average inclination. The School seam has an average thickness of about 35 feet and the Badger seam about 16 feet. The climate at the Dave Johnston Mine is semi-arid, with annual precipitation varying between 10 and 12 inches with 70 percent occurring during the months of April to September, with the maximum occurring in May. A few storms occur in July and August which are usually torrential in character, often causing erosion damage to un- protected soils. Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.

Understanding the appropriate gold recovery to associate with copper recovery when assessing laboratory testing on porphyry deposits is often complicated by several factors including variable and/or complex mineralogy, and the variability contributed by the low Au content of the various flotation products. As a result, gold recovery is often underestimated and the value contributed by the gold to project economics is less than it should be, a problem that could influence overall project viability. Typically, for these types of deposits, the gold recovery is found to be lower than the copper recovery. In this unique project, having the objective of seeking a better understanding of gold recovery relative to copper recovery, mill feed samples from a selection of six operating world-class Cu-Au low-grade deposits were collected along with the mill metallurgical results for the corresponding sample periods. The samples were subjected to laboratory flotation tests, as well as the Laplante gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test, mineralogical assessment and cyanidation leaching. The aim was to better understand the copper and gold recovery relationship, the links between laboratory and plant flotation performance, the influence of mineralogical differences, and the potential for enhancing gold recovery by gravity recovery techniques. A new correlation of copper and gold recoveries based on the results is presented in the paper. The results showed that the link between copper and gold recoveries established in the best laboratory tests were maintained in the plant results, and further, that the potential for improving Au recovery by gravity or flash flotation methods is directly proportional to the amount of gold greater than 75 microns.

During the latter part of 1930 an agreement was reached among operators in Rumania to curtail the production of oil to about 100,000 bbl. per day. This agreement lasted only a few months and 1931 shows a new peak in production with an average yield of 136,900 bbl. per day as against an average of 116,600 bbl. per day for 1930. The total production for 1931 was 49,210,000 bbl.; an increase of 18.4 per cent over the previous year's production. It is interesting to compare the percentage production of the major companies to the potential production figures determined by the Government in September, 1930 (Table l), on the basis of which the proposed curtailment was to have been made. The three companies listed first in this table show an increase in average production for 1931 over their estimated potential production rating. This increase might be attributed at least in part to the recent development of the Boldesti field, which is controlled by these companies and of which the production at present is nearly 10 per cent of the total oil output for Rumania. Among the other fields, Moreni still holds first place with an output of 33.6 per cent, followed by Gura-Ocnitzei with 29.3 per cent. Calcium chloride is a conspicuous example of a former waste product that has found a place for itself in the onward march of civilization. Formerly considered a troublesome constituent of the effluent sewage of many chemical manufacturing plants and salt works, it has now become a commercial product of substantial importance, with sales aggregating almost six million dollars in 1929. The point has not yet been reached where it would seem profitable to undertake large-scale production of calcium chloride as a main product, but as a byproduct it has become an item that warrants serious consideration by all who are in a position to recover it at sufficiently low cost. The largely increased demand for bromine and for certain magnesium salts, which are likewise potential byproducts associated with calcium chloride in most salt-works bitterns (and brines generally), adds further impetus to commercial research directed toward the fuller utilization of the natural saline resources of the United States.

The building trades were the largest users required 2,520,000 tons of calcine for production of plaster, wall board, tiles, block, and various other insulating and building materials. The glass and ceramic industries and other manufacturers required an additional 126,000 tons. Este artigo tem como objetivo verificar os resultados da aplicação de ações que almejam a excelência no processo de carga, descarga e transporte de minério ferro de uma empresa situada na Região do Médio Piracicaba em Minas Gerais. Esta pesquisa é um estudo de caso de natureza exploratória e documental. No desenvolvimento deste estudo foram analisados os documentos da empresa, que referem-se às atas de reunião e relatórios gerenciais. As reuniões foram realizadas pelos gestores e supervisores do processo de carga, descarga e transporte de minério para identificar falhas e apresentar ações que almejassem a excelência no processo produtivo. Por fim, os resultados foram verificados e identificou um aumento no índice da utilização física dos caminhões de 11,46%, aumento da produtividade horária de 27,5% e um crescimento da movimentação total de produção dos caminhões de 23,92%. Com isso, pode-se verificar os ganhos com a aplicação das ações implementadas, que almejam a excelência nas operações.

WE in Canada want to see industry get back to a normal economic basis as soon as possible but wartime controls cannot be dispensed with immediately the war is over. Perhaps never again will we be entirely free from some of the types of controls such as those set up during the war. Certainly the taking over and disposal of surplus materials contemplates the continuation of some form of control for many years to come. However, to the extent that it is possible, the Allied nations are exponents of free enterprise.

Quarry accidents in 1963 caused 61 fatal and 3,468 nonfatal injuries which occurred at respective frequency rates of 0.31 and 17.91 per million man-hours of worktime. The fatality record in 1963 was better than in 1962 but was appreciably worse than in 1.961. For nonfatal injuries, the 1963 record was slightly worse than in 1962 but was better than in 1961. The injury--severity rate of 2,913 days lost or charged per million man-hours in 1963 was better than that of 3,046 in 1962, the first year for which such data became available. The average severity of all injuries in 1963 was 160 days lost or charged per injury, 15 less than in 1962. An average of 91,960 men were at work on active days in 1963 and these men had an aggregate worktime of 193.7 million man-hours during the year.

(communication to the Secretary*).-In order to set at rest any doubts in regard to the reasons for selecting the Callow pneumatic flotation process for use in the concentrators of the Arizona Copper Co., Ltd., at Clifton and Morenci, I am presenting the following facts gained from the results of test work carried out on the Callow and Cole-Bergman types of flotation machines at Morenci. Prior to the comparative test of merit between the Callow and Cole-Bergman machines, many months' time and a large amount of money had been expended in the development and testing of the Cole-Bergman machine, and it was necessary to decide quickly what make of machine was best to install. The Callow pneumatic flotation process was recommended for installation in our concentrators for the following reasons: The results indicated: 1. That the Callow system made the highest extraction of copper values from the feed treated. 2. That the Callow system was simpler to operate and could he operated it a lower cost. 3. That the Callow system operated with a lower air pressure. (The question of the actual power consumption of the two types of machines was not definitely settled at this time.) During the official test period the Callow flotation apparatus showed an additional recovery of from 1 to 1.5 lb. of copper per ton more than the Cole-Bergman machine, this difference being maintained by further treatment of the tailing from both machines. The simplicity of the operation of the Callow flotation system is one of its notable features, two operators per shift being able to handle 90 standard cells and blower equipment.

The system and plants for mining, crushing, concentrating, transporting via a slurry pipeline, filtering and shiploading 7.5 million metric tons of iron ore per year are fully described. The mode of operation and the problems encountered in such a transfer of North American technology to developing countries are analyzed. Difficulties encountered during construction are discussed and the progress milestones made over a two-year period are enumerated.

A theoretical discussion is presented of the behavior of the interface between two fluids of different physical properties when displacement is occurring along a thin tilted bed. An approximate equation of motion is deduced for the motion of the interface, suitable boundary conditions are derived and the conditions necessary for the approximation to be valid are determined. Steady-state behavior and the circumstances under which a steady-state interface can develop are discussed. Finite-difference solutions of the equation of motion for two characteristic water-drive problems are presenled. The theory of displacement in a thin bed may be regarded as being the porous-medium-equivalent of the classical "shallow-water wave" theory of hydrodynamics. INTRODUCTION The solution of moving interface problems are important in predicting the behavior of oil reservoirs under various conditions of production. Kidder4,5 has obtained analytic solutions for the fingering problem and for another particular case of the motion of the interface between two immiscible fluids of unequal density in a porous medium. In the present analysis, we analyze the problem of the motion of an interface along a slightly dipping bed whose length is long compared with its thickness. The requirement of a thin bed is necessary in order to give a simple differential equation for the motion. The two fluids are of unequal density and mobility. In the derivation of the equation of motion, it is assumed that the lighter fluid is being injected at constant rate at the high end of the porous layer, while heavy fluid is produced at the low end of the layer. The analysis applies equally well, however, to the reverse procedure in which the heavier fluid is injected at the low end of the tilted layer. It will be shown that the behavior of the system is critically dependent on which fluid has the higher mobility and that the interface can in certain circumstances achieve a simple progressive steady-state shape. The fluids may be considered to be immiscible or miscible. It is assumed, however, that the thickness of the interface region is negligible in comparison with other dimensions of the system, and that the strength of the saturation or concentration discontinuity remains constant during the motion. In conjunction with Buckley-Leverett theory and areal sweep-out calculations, the tilted interface problem is one of the fundamental problems of reservoir engineering; it defines the very important underpassing and overpassing phenomena associated with water-drives, gas-drives and secondary recovery operations. The tilted interface problem has been dealt with previously by Dietz.2 In the present paper, we endeavor to derive the pertinent mathematical results more rigorously, and in doing so we obtain modifications in both the differential equation and boundary conditions for those given by Dietz. We also attempt to show the connection between these results and some of the recent work on the stability of interfaces. Finally, we attempt to demonstrate the practical importance of the thin bed theory by showing the difference in behavior of two characteristic waterflood problems. In the favorable mobility case recovery is improved by increasing production rate, while in the unfavorable case undercutting or overcutting is minimized by reducing the displacement rate. PROPERTIES OF THE EQUATION OF MOTION Fig. 1 illustrates a porous layer of constant thickness H and tilt 8 with Fluid 1 of mobility ?l and density pl below Fluid 2 of mobility ?2 and density p2. The fluids are incompressible and flowing with volumetric flux q along the layer. Both the slope a of the interface with respect to the bed and the curvature of the interface are assumed to be small. Cameco Corporation operates the high-grade 140 tpd fly-in/fly-out underground McArthur River Uranium Mine in Northern Saskatchewan in a joint venture with Cogema Resources Inc. Reserve grade is in excess of 20 per cent U3O8 with current mining grade averaging 16 per cent U3O8. Due to the high radiation potential of the ore, the non-entry mining method of raiseboring was chosen to minimise worker radiation exposure potential. The raisebore and extraction horizons are located in waste rock with the orebody located between horizons. Ore produced by raiseboring is delivered by LHD to an underground SAG mill and is then hydraulically hoisted to surface receiving facilities after underground thickening to 50 per cent solids by weight. Concrete backfilling is utilised. The orebodies at McArthur River are adjacent to water bearing sandstone. Ground freezing is therefore employed to isolate the ore from this water bearing ground. Calcium chloride brine at -35¦C is circulated through a series of cased boreholes to establish freeze walls up to 25 metres in thickness. At 18 000 000 lb of low cost U3O8 production per annum, McArthur River ranks as the worldsÆ largest uranium mine. Over 50 per cent of the workforce resides in this sparsely populated area of Canada with approximately 40 per cent being of aboriginal ancestry. Site operations must cater for winter temperatures as low as -50¦C.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.
