Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. Lucerne Valley California operation is one of the largest producers of high brightness high purity fme grind limestone products in western North America. The San Bernardino Mountains area of southern California contains the largest high brightness, high purity limestone mining operations and undeveloped reserves in western North America (Fig. 1, Brown 1987). Combined annual production of high brightness limestone products from several operations is approximately 1.5 million tons, with an estimated gross value of $75 million dollars per year (Fig. 2). An additional 5.0 million tons of cement grade limestone is mined by several large cement producers in the nearby Mojave area (Brown, in press). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the geologic setting, genesis and mining of white, high purity crystalline limestone by Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc.

"In consideration of energy savings the ideal refractory furnace lining should possess the following features:??Lowest thermal conductivity possible in order to avoid heat loss.??Single component lining in order to allow freeze plane changes caused by wear, infiltration and temperature changes of the furnace.??Resistance against mechanical wear from cleaning tools and stirring in order to allow maximum output without equipment downtime due to maintenance.??Resistance against thermo-chemical attack from aluminum and alloying elements.However, refractory materials with a low thermal conductivity typically possess a higher porosity and this leads to lower strengths and resistance against chemical attack and wear. Hence, as a compromise, multi layer linings are required in order to meet energy saving standards.In this paper we present the features of chemically phosphate bonded dense and light weight refractories and how such refractories can contribute to energy savings.IntroductionIn several reports, the U.S Department of Energy published theoretical energy requirement limits for aluminum production as a future target, with recommendations on how to reduce energy losses. The reports provide a basic description of the processes and equipment involved, their interrelationship, and their effects on energy consumed. The report uses onsite process measurements as benchmarks that industry uses to compare performance between facilities and companies [1]. The energy consumptions used in this paper are primarily based on numbers published by the Department of Energy. However, their reports do not consider the potentially significant energy losses from process interruptions due to a lack of preventive maintenance and material deterioration over time. Further, the Department of Energy reports do not consider equipment costs and availability. Energy input to metal output depends on factors beyond energy losses through the furnace wall. For instance, a focus on energy savings should consider fixed output costs due to depreciation of the equipment and the plant."

"The Chibougamau Explorers property comprises 35 claims or 1,726 acres in La Dauversiere and Rohault Townships along the west shore of Norhart Lake. The property is serviced by a twelve-mile all-weather high-way leaving the main St. Felicien-Chibougamau highway at mileage 121. This road junction will be a railway siding on the C.N.R. St. Felicien-Chibougamau branch line in early 1957. The property lies 30 miles due south from the town of Chibougamau. The mine-sponsored Chibougamau Explorers town has a population of 250 with 28 residences and a well equipped recreation centre.The original showing was found by Rider Storn, a prospector financed by Val d'Or interests during the 1950 field season. This showing did not stand up to detailed prospecting but it did lead to the discovery of the main zone by A. Oakley during the following winter.The company was incorporated in I 950 under the presidency of E. Ayrhart. Financing following the initial drilling involved an increase of capitalization from 3 to 5 million shares and the advent of financing and management control by Anacon Lead Mines Limited.Exploration and development to Jan. I, 1956, has included 42,331 feet of surface diamond drilling; 31,363 feet of underground drilling; a 3-compartment shaft to 1,245 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals; and I 1,054 feet of drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Ore reserves to the 900-foot level, proven and partly developed, total 546,725 tons averaging 0·30 ounces gold and 0·93 per cent copper. A mill with capacity of 500 to 750 tons will be installed by January 1956.GeologyThe Chibougamau Explorers property lies along the belt of Keewatin volcanics striking through Bachelor Lake, Opawica Lake, Doda Lake, Coapatina, Norhart Lake, and Rohault Lake, where it is in close proximity to the paragneisses of the Grenville series. The boundary of the paragneisses, a gradational contact, lies within a mile of the Chibougamau Explorers shaft collar."

"There are substantial challenges in the exploration of magnetic materials in the R-TM-X system (R =rare earth, TM= transition metal, X =stabilizing element) where Xis an element which has high vapor pressure, high reactivity, toxicity, or a refractory nature. This research focuses on discovering new phases with high anisotropy and high magnetization through closed diffusion couples inside high purity Fe crucibles. Either vapor-solid reactions or powder metallurgy techniques are then employed to isolate a stoichiometric sample based on a potentially magnetic phase found in the diffusion couple. For this research, X = F, Ca, Sr, Se, Zn, Bi or Cd, TM= Fe, and R = Nd. New ternary phases have been discovered with WDS and EDS, and magnetic transition temperatures have been measured with a SQUID magnetometer and VSM.IntroductionSince the discovery of the RCo5 compounds in the 1960s, rare earth- transition metal (R-TM) magnets have been the main focus of permanent magnetic research over the last five decades. Iron-based magnetic materials were studied next in attempts to avoid the unstable price of cobalt as well as the high price of Sm, the top performer in the RCos and RzC011 series. This hunt eventually led to the discovery of Nd2Fe14B with a theoretical BHmax of 64 MGOe, nearly double that of the previous samarium based magnets. The next few decades were devoted to enhancing the magnetic properties ofNd2Fe14B by the improvement of processing techniques and the additions of alloying elements. The only complete elemental substitution discovered in this system was R1Fe14C, which did not improve magnetic properties. It is probably safe to say that most ternary R-TM-X systems, where Xis any element that may stabilize a ternary phase, have been investigated if they may be prepared by conventional processes such as arc or induction melting. The present study offers a systematic approach to developing a novel diffusion couple technique in which the volatile, reactive or toxic alloying elements are laser welded inside a high purity Fe crucible. This experimental setup will prevent the oxidation of the rare earth element, as well as contain the volatile X element. As the goal of the research was to find new rare earth permanent magnets, only phases which contained greater than 60 wt% Fe were investigated. 247"

The description whieh follows sets out the general details of construction of such furnaces, and the operation at thc Broken Hill Proprietary Company's blast furnaces at Newcastle, New South Wales.The occurence of iron in many forms is so well known as to need no description. Modern civilisation may be said to be built on a foundation of iron, and, today, the production of iron and steel has beeome one of the world's industries.A short historical introduction will serve to show the evolution of the processes and apparatus since iron production assumed importance.There is no definite date fixed as to when iron was first made, or by what means it was first discovered. Perhaps prehistoric man threw iron bearing stone on to his fire, and these became reduced, Ieaving a soft metal behind, or more probably the first iron was of meteoric origin.There is evidence, however, to prove that it has been known for a period of 6000 years. Iron has been found in the Pyramids and its use was known to the early Eqyptians and later to the Hebrews, Assyrians, Greeks and Chinese. Following the Greeks, the Romans excelled in its extraction and uses in the manufacture of their instruments of war, and to this fact can largely be attributed the success of their many wars of conquest. The Bureau of Mines examined a fibrous talc sample from the Gouverneur talc district in New York by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and polarized light microscopy to determine the mineralogical relationship of the fibrous talc to the amphiboles present in the sample. Two am-phiboles, anthophyllite and tremolite, were present in the sample. Tremolite occurred as a separate mineral phase, which was blocky in habit. Only a few composite tremolite-talc grains were observed. An-thophyllite, however, was present only in the fibrous talc grains. Mi-crodiffraction study of the fibrous talc grains containing anthophyllite showed that the anthophyllite was intermixed with the talc on a fine scale and that there was a crystallographic relationship between the talc and anthophyllite lattices in the fibrous talc grains. A mechanism similar to the process that forms biopyriboles could explain the structural defects, the fibrous habit of the talc, and the structural relationship between the talc and anthophyllite in the fibrous talc grains. Because of these characteristics, phase contrast microscopy and a provisional TEM technique for monitoring asbestos exposure would not distinguish between fibrous talc and fibrous amphiboles. TEM techniques employing electron diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis are recommended to positively identify the fibrous phases for regulatory purposes.

Let me reassure you by promising that my narrative will not include all the experiences I have had over that long period. You will, I trust, pardon what might seem egotistical but I do not see how a personal narrative could well be otherwise.

In the constant search for ways and means of improving the quality of coke and thus making its use at the blast-fornace more satisfactory and economical, it has become increasingly evident that the present laboratory tests do not show the full picture of a coke's value as a blast-furnace fuel. This fact was recognized by Dr. A. C. Pieldner thirty-five years ago: (Ref. 1) here is perhaps no phase of fuel technicology which has aroused more discussion or regarding which there is more difference of opinion than the properties of coke which make it most suitable for blast-furnaces and other uses." Dr. Fieldner followed this assertion with a statement to the effect that men who write on this subject today (1923) have, because of conflicting experimental evidence brought forth in recent years, far less positive opinions on the matter than did writers of some years past. One is led to wonder if these statements are not just as true now as they were when first made.

A finite element model of a 5 m radius DC arc ilmenite furnace in idling mode was used to test the notion that the slag solidifies when it comes in to contact with colder pig iron, thus constituting the initial step in the formation of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface. It was found that a slag that is 150°C hotter than the pig iron does not solidify at the interface. The 150°C temperature difference between the slag and pig iron is a result of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface, not the other way around as suggested in the literature. Calculations show that the thickness of the frozen slag at the slag-pig iron interface is 1.7 cm for the furnace used. It is proposed that slag solidification begins with the slow co-current flow of molten slag and pig iron in the outer parts of the furnace. This provides enough time for molten slag to interact with molten pig iron without solidifying. As the reduction products form due to reduction of the slag by carbon in the pig iron, the slag solidifies. This approach negates the need for the slag to solidify by merely coming into contact with an inherently colder pig iron. Making use of a low thermal contact conductance between the slag and pig iron was found to be sufficient to numerically capture the presence of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface and to preserve the 150C difference between the slag and pig iron phase.

Oil shale, a potential source of products presently obtained from petroleum, is found in many countries. The most extensive known deposits from the standpoint of potential shale oil in place are those in Brazil and the United States of America. Mining methods used for oil shale range from open-pit operations for shallow deposits to room-and-pillar and longwall techniques for deposits with thick overburdens. Oil shales from different sources vary greatly in the amounts and types of organic and inorganic constituents. By retorting, the organic material is converted to oil, gas, and coke. The largest percentages of oil are obtained from materials having the highest hydrogen content. Over 2,000 retorting systems have been patented, but only a few have been used industrially, and no single process seems best for all types of shales or economic conditions. Shale oils have different characteristics, depending on the source rock and method of retorting. They contain large quantities of olefinic hydrocarbons and more oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur derivatives of hydrocarbons than most petroleums. Consequently, petroleum refining methods usually must be modified for shale oil. This is particularly true in catalytic processing. Hydrogenation, even under mild conditions, improves shale-oil refinability. Several byproducts may be obtained from both the retorting and refining steps,

THAT gold ores occur in Georgia is a fact apparently not widely known outside of that state, yet in the last hundred years nearly $18,000,000 worth of gold has been mined there. The discovery of gold-hearing quartz was made in 1823 on the "Forty Acre Lot" (which now belongs to the Columbia Mining Co.), in McDuffie County, and about seven years later the first stamp mill on record was erected near there. In recent years Georgia's gold production has dwindled to an insignificant figure. However, with the increase in gold price, interest in this district has been revived, so an electrical geophysical survey was undertaken to aid in discovering new quartz veins, on a part of the Forty Acre Lot, the adjoining Hamilton mine, and the nearby Woodall property.

"This paper presents the results of a 2017 study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations within a longwall abutment pillar under deep cover. The 2017 study was conducted in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-foot-wide longwall panels under 1,185 feet of cover. One 650-foot-deep, in-place inclinometer monitoring well was drilled and installed over a 150-foot by 275-foot center abutment pillar. In addition to the monitoring well, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the 1,500-foot-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar was being mined.Prior to the first longwall excavation, a number of simulations using FLAC3D™ (Itasca, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, increases in underground coal pillar pressure, and subsurface horizontal displacements in the monitoring well. Comparisons of the pre-mining FLAC3D simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured in-place inclinometer casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the 3D finite difference models. The measured surface subsidence and pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Results from this 2017 research clearly indicate that, under deep cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are approximately one order of magnitude smaller than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover.INTRODUCTIONDue to a recent shale gas boom, approximately 1,400 unconventional shale gas wells have been drilled through active and future coal reserves in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio over the past 15 years. These shale gas wells have penetrated many coal seams, such as the Sewickley, Pittsburgh, Upper Freeport, and Kittanning seams. These unconventional gas wells, whether tapped into the Marcellus or Utica formations, contain very high gas pressure. Strata deformations associated with longwall and other high extraction techniques could induce high stresses and deformations in the shale gas well casings. This could seriously compromise the mechanical integrity of the production, intermediate, and coal protection casings (Figure 1). Damaged well casings could potentially introduce high-pressure, explosive gas into underground mine workings, particularly during an extended well shut-in period, which could seriously jeopardize underground miners’ safety and health."

Environmental compliance and mine designs are increasingly including assessment of flows and water qualities as a key driver to decision-making over life-of-mine. Integrated site-wide water quality models linked to dynamic water balances have been used for regulatory submissions, feasibility studies, operating mines and mine closure studies. These models, developed in GoldSim, link aqueous chemistry to the physical system of the site-wide water balance. Geochemical mechanisms included are determined from geochemical characterisation and site water monitoring, depending on the data availability at each site. External geochemical modelling using PHREEQC, version 2 (by D?L?Parkhurst and C?A?J?Appelo) and Geochemists Workbench (GWB), (by C?M?Bethke and The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois) identifies the most important geochemical processes to be included in the model as a series of geochemical mechanisms which include source term loading rates, pH-buffering and equilibration of water quality. Water balance components include seasonal flow variability; waste facility water storage and system lags; run-off variability; milling processes and tailings production as a function of ore types; simulation of automated and scheduled maintenance of settling ponds; water re-routing for water treatment and freshwater demand, usage and storage.Case studies illustrating the use of these models for regulatory submissions and mine feasibility studies in a variety of climatic and regulatory environments show the utility and applicability of these models. Site-specific examples of these models developed by Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd are currently used at operating mines across the world. One of the larger mines where this is used is a mature poly-metallic mine in South America where the model has aided mine managers in understanding how various planned initiatives and potential water options will result in changes to flows and water quality. It is used regularly to inform water and waste management to minimise impacts to the receiving environment as a consideration of both flows and concentrations. The mine has also used the model in support of water treatment design, regulatory submissions and mine closure planning.Further examples of feasibility and operational/compliance assessment in arid and strongly seasonal environments for planning, regulatory and closure consideration of mine wastes and pits have shown the utility and usefulness of these approaches for a range of mining operations at various stages of mine life.CITATION:Strand, R and Usher, B, ?2014. "Modified cable bolts are commonly used in underground mines due to their superior performance in preventing bed separation when compared with plain strands. To better test the axial performance of a wide range of cable bolts, a new Laboratory Short Encapsulation Pull Test (LSEPT) facility was developed. The facility simulates the interaction between cable bolts and surrounding rock mass, using artificial rock cylinders with a diameter of 300 mm in which the cable bolt is grouted. Furthermore, the joint where the load is applied is left unconstrained to allow shear slippage at the cable/grout or grout/ rock interface. Based on this apparatus, a series of pull tests were undertaken using the MW9 modified bulb cable bolt. Various parameters including embedment length, test material strength and borehole size were evaluated. It was found that within a limited range of 360 mm, there is a linear relationship between the maximum bearing capacity of the cable bolt and embedment length. Beyond 360 mm, the peak capacity continues to rise but with a much lower slope. When the MW9 cable bolt was grouted in a weak test material, failure always took place along the grout/ rock interface. Interestingly, increasing the borehole diameter from 42 mm to 52 mm in weak test material altered the failure mode from grout/rock interface to cable/grout interface and improved the performance in terms of both peak and residual capacity.INTRODUCTIONFully grouted cable bolts have been used in underground mining industry for many decades. Initially, plain cable bolts manufactured by winding seven flexible steel wires together were commonly used (Thorne and Muller, 1964). Laboratory and field tests lead to a better understanding of the transfer process between grouted cable bolts and the surrounding rock mass, which is beneficial to improve the reinforcing performance of cable bolts in engineering practice (Fuller and Cox, 1975; Cox and Fuller, 1977; Schmuck, 1979; Stillborg, 1984). Nevertheless, as in many cases the initial cable was sourced from discarded steel with a smooth surface along the strand, plain cable bolts did not always meet performance expectations (Windsor, 1992). Over time, it was realised that cable surface geometry plays an important role in determining anchorage performance. Consequently, modified forms of cable bolts were developed. For instance, twin-strands which were made by using spacers to combine two plain cables together improved anchorage capacity two-fold (Matthews, Tillmann and Worotnicki, 1983). However, this required a large borehole to be drilled. Epoxycoated strands had remarkable performance in practice but were difficult to install without damaging the epoxy layer (Dorsten, Hunt and Kent, 1984). In the 1990s, there was a rapid development in the cable bolt design. A typical example was birdcaged cable bolts. They were initially suggested by Hutchins et al. (1990) via unwrapping traditional seven-wire strands and generating a number of nodes together with antinodes along the strand. But it was difficult to make birdcaged cable bolts that could be coiled for transporting."

I have attended two Explosives Engineers’ Conferences in the past 4 years. The first was in Brighton, England with the European Federation of Explosives Engineers in 2005 and the International Society of Explosives Engineers in New Orleans, USA in 2008. At both of these conferences I listened to papers presented on European and English training methodologies and ideologies. As I have been training Shotfirers for the past 18 years in Queensland and the Northern Territory for some 8 years previously, I would like to present our methods of training in Queensland, which I believe is among the best in the world. In Queensland, this training is carried out by a training organisation that is registered by the Department of Education, Training and the Arts under the guidelines of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). Not only is this Registered Training Organisation (RTO) required to operate under these very comprehensive guidelines, but also those designated by the Explosives Inspectorate of the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy.

In response to concerns voiced by local, state, and federal agencies and various environmental groups, the Central Florida Phosphate Industry and various governmental agencies have been investigating methods to accelerate the consolidation of waste clays generated during phosphate washing and beneficiation processes. The objectives of research efforts have been to reduce the storage volumes required for clay waste, accelerate reclamation and to return the land to approximate pre-mining topography. Government and industry research to accelerate waste clay consolidation has evolved two general methods: gravity thickening and chemical flocculation. Gardinier, Inc. one of the phosphate mining companies, evaluated the use of synthetic (polyacrylamide) flocculants as an alternate waste clay thickening method in response to mining conditions encountered at their Fort Meade Mine and the proposed North Hardee County extension of the Fort Meade mine (Figure 1). After considerable research and evaluation, the Alsthom-Atlantic Clariflux Super-flocculation method was chosen by Gardinier, Inc. as a method to seriously consider for use at their Fort Meade mine.

The recycling of waste tires has been a big environmental problem. About 280 million waste tires are produced annually in the United States and more than 2 billion tires are stockpiled, which cause fire hazards and health issues. Tire rubbers are insoluble elastic high polymer materials. They are not biodegradable and may take hundreds of years to decompose in the natural environment. Microwave irradiation can be a thermal processing method for the decomposition of tire rubbers. In this study, the microwave absorption properties of waste tire at various temperatures are characterized to determine the conditions favorable for the microwave heating of waste tires.

Copper deposits in sandstones are excellent targets for open pit mines using SX-EW extraction and processing methods. The mineralogy consists of chalcocite as the primary sulfide and copper carbonates and sulfates in the zone of oxidation. Two general deposit types are recognized: early diagenetic copper deposits that are associated with the reddening of the surrounding sediments, and epigenetic deposits that are associated with the migration of copper-rich basinal fluids along faults into permeable reservoir beds with a source of reductant. Epigenetic copper deposits are more likely to contain enough tonnage to be economic.
