The influence of a number of alloying additions on the structure and hardness of Ni3Al (?') has been studied. Three general effects have been observed.. solid-solution hardening, strain aging, and defect hardening arising from deviations from stoichiometry. The solid-solution hardening phenomena are complicated relative to binary terminal solid solutions due to the possibility of virtually independent substitution for the component elements and to the concomitant effects of strain aging. In many superior nickel-base high-temperature alloys the elevated temperature strength is attributable to the presence of a dispersion of Ni3A1 (?') in a solid-solution matrix. Examples of such alloys are Inconel X-550, Inco 713, Waspalloy, and Nimonic 80. It is, therefore, appropriate to seek a further understanding of the properties and alloying behavior of this compound. Ni3Al, the compound most rich in nickel in the nickel-aluminum binary system, was first detected by litakal but not established with certainty until the much later studies of Bradley and Taylor' and Alexander and Vaughan.3 More recently the mechanism of formation was clarified by Floyd4 who showed that Ni3Al is the product of a peritectic reaction at 1395°C between the melt and the compound NiAl in agreement with the original suggestion of Alexander and Vaughan.3 Ni3Al has the ordered face-centered-cubic or Cu3Au structure in which the nickel atoms occupy the face centers and the aluminum atoms the cube corners, a0 = 3.570A. Despite earlier reports to the contrary. the compound apparently remains ordered at least to 1000oC.5 It exists over a narrow range of compositions (-3 pct wide) whose limits and temperature dependencies thereof have been reviewed recently by Taylor and Floyd.' Most previous workers have found Ni3Al to be both hard and brittle7,8 although Maxwell and Grala8 obtained 2.5 to 6 pct tensile elongation at room temperature and Alexander and vaughan3 described the material as "hard and tough" on the basis of observations made while preparing metallographic specimens. In a recent study one of the present authors found that although considerable intergranu-lar brittleness was evident: individual grains of a coarse-grained inert atmosphere arc-melted specimen were readily deformable.l0 The same study also showed Ni3Al to have an anomalous temperature dependence of hardness in that such a curve exhibits a number of peaks between room temperature and 800°C which could not be associated with any microscopically observable precipitation reactions or polymorphic transformations. It was, therefore, proposed in the present study to elucidate the anomalous high-temperature strength behavior and to examine the solid-solution alloying of this compound and the effects of such alloying on hardness. Sample Preparation and Experimental Procedure-Samples, both of pure Ni,Al and of various alloyed solid solutions based on Ni3Al, were prepared by arc melting 100-g buttons in an inert atmosphere arc furnace. All buttons were heat treated for 4 hr at 1275oC and examined metallographically for homogeneity. Microstructures were typically homogeneous and single phase with ASTM grain size about 1 and unusually clean grain boundaries. Chemical analyses showed good correspondence (within a few tenths of a percent) with intended compositions. Microindentation hardness data were obtained from room temperature to 800°C in vacuo using a balanced-beam type loading system in an instrument to be described in detail elsewhere." In general a 100-g load, a loading rate of 1 mm per min and an indentation time of 15 sec were used. Various indenter materials were used according to the materials bein tested because of specimen-indenter interaction. Fl Measurements of the Vickers-type indentations were made at room temperature. Hardness-temperature curves were run at least twice on each sample to ensure that surface work-hardening effects had been eliminated." The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 requires that each operator of a coal mine shall take accurate samples of the amount of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere to which each miner is exposed, a measure designed to prevent the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. This textbook manual is used in the training of personnel to operate respirable dust sampling devices and to conduct sampling programs. It contains the portions of the act applicable to respirable dust standards, the procedures to be followed to insure compliance with Federal regulations, and descriptions of sampling devices.

The dissolution kinetics of gold in iodide solutions with oxygen in an autoclave was investigated. The leaching process was described by a gas-liquid-solid heterogeneous reaction. The effect of stirring speed, temperature, partial pressure of oxygen, and concentration of lixiviants on the overall leaching rate was investigated. It was found that the dissolution of gold was limited by a heterogeneous chemical reaction. The apparent activation energy was measured to be 34.7-54.3 kJ/mol under the conditions studied. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the kinetic model proposed.

An alkaline leaching procedure for recovering uranium from a submarginal 0.1 percent Ug Og calcareous carnotite ore from the Shiprock , N. Mex . , area was investigated . A recovery of 72 percent of the uranium was attained in a preliminary test embodying the commonly accepted practice of ( 1 ) alkaline leaching at 90° C , ( 2 ) multiple stage filtration and washing for recovery of a clear pregnant solution , and ( 3 ) caustic precipitation of uranium as sodium diuranate , with recycle of the barren solution to the leaching and washing circuits . Ion exchange resins were used in a second , less orthodox test that comprised ( 1 ) sodium carbonate leaching of minus 10- mesh ore at 90 ° C to dissolve the uranium , ( 2 ) filtration to recover the leaching reagent for reuse , (3 ) recovery of the uranium- bearing solution in the filter cake as a pregnant slime slurry by repulping of the filter cake followed by a sand- slime separation and countercurrent decantation (CCD ) washing for rejection of the sand fraction , (4 ) recovery of the dissolved uranium from the pregnant slime slurry by resin- in- pulp (RIP ) , ( 5 ) elution of the uranium from the resin with a solution of ammonium chloride acidified with hydrochloric acid , and (6 ) precipitation of the uranium with ammonia gas . About 83 percent of the uranium was extracted from the ore and 95.5 percent of the dissolved uranium recovered by ion exchange . Improved laboratory results were obtained using the RIP process , but larger scale tests would be necessary for economic evaluation of the two processes .

Although the question of the "waste of anthracite coal mining " has been so frequently discussed, and a committee was appointed at the first meeting of this Society to consider and report upon the subject, still but little progress seems to have been made in arriving at a conclusion as to how it ran be reduced. That committee made a preliminary report at the August meeting, 1871, in which it divided the question into three parts, namely: Waste in mining, in preparing for market, and in transportation. I shall not here refer to the first item, as so much depends upon the peculiar features of each separate mine, and the skill of those in charge; but in reference to the second, that of preparing the coal for market in breaker and screens, I wish to make some remarks. There is no use considering the question, whether the coal should be broken up to suit the fancy of consumers; all miners are satisfied that it should not be, but the consumers decide that they want it that way, and the miner must submit, and simply utter his maledictions upon the head of the man who first suggested a breaker or screen, if that is any consolation to him. What is called waste in this process of preparation, is the dust and fine coal, which results from the breaking and screening, and, as we all know, this is a very important percentage of what passes from the slope to the top of the breaker. Now, if this dust and fine coal can be utilized—the slate which is picked out is not to be taken into consideration as waste—then we get rid of this item entirely. INTRODUCTION Mineral processing plants generally operate efficiently within the technical, economic and management constraints applied to them. They have no choice, because the dynamic and competitive nature of the mineral business dictates that survival and/or prosperity of the company depends on being a low cost producer. Progressive mineral companies realize that market downturns will occur, and they must continuously strive for lower unit production costs rather than be satisfied with the status quo. Mineral companies generally tend to reduce costs during market downturns. This short-term solution is achieved by high grading of ores, and cut-backs In waste stripping, exploration, and capital expenditures.(1) However, to remain a low-cost producer in the long term, companies must enhance revenue and reduce cost simultaneously. This Involves continuous evaluation of technologies and reagents, periodic audits to locate revenue losses; and gathering and analyzing statistical plant data to clearly understand the Impact of process variables on efficiency. Mineral companies are caught in a Catch-22. They need resources to accomplish the objectives outlined above. Most mill stuffs have been cut to the minimum level necessary to maintain production. Resources such as time, manpower and money are scarce, and mill metallurglsts struggle to use these resources productively. Is your flotation plant optimized? History Indicates that successful operations constantly tune the flotation circuits to Improve metallurgy or reduce cost. This Is the essence of evolutionary change In mineral processing operations. A plant auditing approach can play a key role in assisting the process engineers to achieve the overall objective of enhancing metallurgy and reducing cost with limited resources through evolutionary improvements. FLOTATION SYSTEM The flotation process is the most widely wed concentration process In the world today. The number of variables that can affect the flotation results Is very large, maybe over 100. These variables can be divided Into three main groups: (2) (1) ore and mineral properties; (2) reagent treatment; and (3) flotation machine characteristics. Some of these variables can be controlled while others have to be accepted. Recently, Investigators (3,4) have attempted to describe the flotation process as an engineering system which includes chemistry, equipment and operating variables. Though some of the variables are Independent, most are co-dependent. thus making it difficult to develop simple cause and effect relationships. For example, it is easy to understand the effect of reagent change on recovery and grade In the rougher circuit, but very difficult to quantify Its impact on filtration downstream. Plant audits on a periodic basis are necessary to develop an understanding of the Interactive nature of the system. Auditing provides comparisons of plant operating performance before and after variable changes. OVERVIEW OF PLANT AUDITING An audit Is a formal, thorough and periodic examination of a system. There are various types of audits (i.e., geological, environmental, metallurgical. economic, etc.), and each serves a different purpose. (5) The discussion here is related to plant and/or metallurgical audits. Neale and Flintoff note that two key factors governing changes In an operation are: (1) the opportunity must be recognized; and (2) the justification for change must exist. (6) Both factors emphasize the critical role of successful plant auditing. Without plant audits. many opportunities for improvement must go unrecognized. On the other hand, when a situation ripe for improvement Is recognized. the hard data from a plant audit can reveal the expected impact of an operating change.

Synthetic zeolites were tried as selective adsorbents for recovering sulfur dioxide from synthetic gases and gases produced from gypsum decomposition . Initial adsorption tests , using the synthetic gases , indicated that three of these compounds , having sulfur dioxide capacities of up to 29 grams per 100 grams of adsorbent , were satisfactory . Regeneration studies showed that over 90 pct of the sulfur dioxide desorbed from the loaded beds was of sufficient purity for direct liquefaction . However , all zeolites tested lost adsorptive capacity with repeated use . The zeolite determined to be the most promising in the preliminary synthetic gas tests was also evaluated for capability in adsorbing sulfur dioxide from gases produced by the thermal decomposition of gypsum . Despite small amounts of hydrogen sulfide in the gypsum decomposition offgas , good adsorption of sulfur dioxide was attained . The economic practicality of utilizing zeolites for sulfur dioxide removal from industrial gases was not evaluated , but the technical feasibility was demonstrated .

THESE ores occur in the Laurentian rocks in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, New York. The Clifton Mining Company have opened these magnetites upon their estate of 23,000 acres, on the waters of the Grasse River, an affluent of the St. Lawrence, which flows for about nine miles across the estate, exposing a section of the formation, and affording ample water-power at numerous points. In approaching this district from De Kalb Junction, upon the Watertown and Ogdensburg Railway, the observer passes from the zone of the specular ores, which abound to a great extent in Jefferson County, across a belt of non-metal-liferous limestones, continuing for some miles intermingled with metamorphic rocks, and gradually giving place to heavy beds of granitic and porphyritic gneiss, the weathered surfaces of which present a gray and rough appearance, from the washing out of the feldspar; leaving the quartz very prominent, and completely disguising the real character of the rock, which, when freshly broken, has a lively reddish appearance from the predominance of flesh-colored and red feldspar. Beds of fine-grained quartzite appear also intercalated in the granitic gneiss. These are the dominating rocks of the magnetite region, but the magnetite is always found, so far as the speaker's observation extended, associated with beds of calcite, carrying hornblende, black and green, biotite, and brown garnet interspersed with yellow and magnetic pyrites. The strike of these rocks is about northeast, and their dip about 40° to 45° southeast.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, recognizing the importance of knowing the evapor¬ation losses of aviation gasoline as larger quantities of this material must be stored, has made studies at a large refinery in the Texas Panhandle area during the past 13 months to determine the magnitude of the losses, by evaporation, under different storage conditions. Proper storage of aviation gasoline is very important, not only because large supplies are being stored for military use but because the specifications to which his fuel must conform are very rigid. Aviation gasolines that conform present-day specifications are blended from base-gasoline stocks (in some instances relatively pure hydrocarbons), each of which has different physical and chemical characteristics. Consequently, partial loss of any one of the more volatile components from the blended fuel results not only in material loss of the blended fuel but also may affect the characteristics or performance of the gasoline. One characteristic that has considerable influence or the vaporization tendency of gasoline is vapor pressure; and although the vapor pressure of aviation gasoline usually is lower than that of average commercial motor fuel, the quantity of certain components having relatively higher vapor pressure is greater in aviation gasoline, so that under prolonged storage the evaporation loss of these components may be appreciable."

Petroleum oils of widely different grades have long been clarified or decolorized by contact with fuller's earths. More recently, so-called activated clays have also been used for this purpose. Still more recently ouch clays have been used in the form of nodules termed "catalytic pellets." Clays of varied appearance and from different localities possess the desired bleaching qualities, but evaluation of such clays, so useful to the oil industry, has not been simple. Previous methods of identification and evaluation have largely followed procedures of production methods and were not primarily based upon the fundamental properties of the clays. Thus) a false assumption has grown up that) bleaching clays probably have no common properties on which a-method of comparison can be based. Fuller's earths and activated clays have a large absorptive capacity for the color constituents of petroleum and its products decolorizing is accomplished by bringing the oil into intimate contact with the clay and later separating the decolorized oil from the clay with its load of absorbed coloring matter. Former practice in absorbing "color" was to use the clay as granules or In' powdered form. More recent practice is to use clay pellets that are more abrasion-resistant than the granules. The oil is either filtered through a bed of clay, percolation method, or agitated on contact with the clay, contact method. Viscous oils are decolorized at an elevated temperature, so that their viscosity is lowered to the point at which thorough contact with the clay is insured. Nonhumidifying, nonoxidizing gas, such as dry steam or dry nitrogen, is used to seal such hot oil masses from the atmosphere.

This Bureau of Mines study examines the acoustic vibrational spectra of rock slabs in the range of 0 to 5,000 Hz. The power spectra of so-called drummy rocks were found to be diagnostically enhanced in the range of 200 to 1,000 Hz. Comparison of the power in this band with that in a band from 3,000 to 3,500 Hz provides a quantitative measure of rock stability. A prototype field instrument was designed, constructed, and field-tested. This battery-powered instrument computes the power contained in the two frequency bands mentioned, compares the magnitude of these two quantities, and displays a number that is related to the detachment of the block tested. Field tests show that this instrument is capable of giving reliable measurements of block stability under conditions of noise and dust that would seriously degrade the accuracy of normal sounding techniques.

During recent years, Central Queensland has experienced a boom in its coal mining industry. This has involved many companies in projects requiring large capital expenditure. As with most projects of this size, many operating problems are now being experienced which were unforseen at the feasibility stage. One of these problems is the failure of pit slopes and spoil piles at some of the strip mining operations. There have been serious stability problems associated with Utah Development Company's strip mining operations in Central Queensland, in particular the Goonyella Mine. A field investigation programme was under- taken to determine the cause of highwall and spoilpile slope failures. Spoilpile failures were found to result from weakness near the spoil/floor contact zone. Highwall failures were found to result from a combination of unfavourable bedding plane dips and weakness, and the presence of joints in weak o~erburdep; Satisfactory solutions fa the staiity, problems are difficult to formulate, and-field stability experimentation is still at an early Stage.

The interaction between rock and drill bit during drilling has been modeled for many years, but a complete understanding of the phenomena occurring has yet to materialize. Successful models will allow the prediction of rate of penetration in a given environment and optimal selection of drill bit and drilling parameters, thus minimizing exploration costs. In most rock-drilling models the value of the unconfined compressive strength of the rock (UCS) is used in the predictive equations, within the concept of specific energy, and the value of UCS is the percentage of the value of the stress applied on the drilling bit in order for the bit to advance. While the exact percentage depends on the model used and it is not known with certainty, good knowledge of UCS is nevertheless required before any decent prediction can be made on rate of penetration. Determination of UCS, normally done via destructive testing, requires not only the availability of sound rock core samples but also expensive testing and significant time for the test, which frequently are not available for routine drillability predictions. Hence, a multitude of methods and techniques has been proposed for estimating UCS from various indirect and/or non-destructive measurements, or combination of measurements with neural networks, such as point load index, block punch index, unit weight, and apparent porosity, water absorption by weight, sonic velocity, and Schmidt hardness. The many proposed approaches are critically reviewed and the results are compared, and what becomes apparent is that after many years, not only in mining but also in oil-well drilling, accurate indirect determination of UCS is still an elusive goal. An equation to predict UCS from sonic velocity data is suggested based on several data sets reported in the literature. Use of the specific energy equation with UCS or sonic data and utilization of drilling data allows an estimation of the efficiency of energy transfer from the bit to the rock and of the friction coefficient. Analysis of data reported in the literature, both from laboratory and field studies, has shown that this approach is sound and enables the determination of energy transfer efficiencies and friction coefficients, which for the cases studied range between 15 and 30% and 0.15 and 0.30 respectively. Thus, the suggested data analysis approach allows drillers to focus on inefficiencies and optimize drilling practices in future campaigns. The Joint Session on Continuous Cast- ing, of the Institute of Metals Division and the Iron and Steel Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, convened in the Jade Room of, the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York City, on Feb. 23, 1944, at 9:15 o'clock, Carl E. Swartz presiding. C. E. SWARTZ.-It is gratifying to see so many out at what may seem an early hour for the beginning of A.I.M.E. sessions, but I think this number-some fifty or sixty of you-is an adequate expression of the interest in these processes all over the United States, and possibly in foreign countries. I would like to ask those who feel that this type of program is of value to you to write or speak to some one of the Institute of Metals Division officers and suggest other topics for symposiums. We have a feeling that some of these current practices are of interest and we believe that under proper sponsorship many of the companies will be willing to give publicity to processes such as those that will be discussed today. Also, we would like suggestions and criticisms, so that the next ones can be better. The subject of continuous casting is not new, of course. The two papers on the program this morning will adequately cover the history and some of the earlier processes, some of the theory and some of the practice, some of the reasons why these various methods did not work. I was rather interested in discovering, when thumbing through one of the A.I.M.E. publications the other night, an article on continuous casting. I was not aware that the A.I.M.E. had published any papers on continuous casting, but there may be a number. The one that I happened to find was published in the 1915 volume, on the Mellen rod- casting process, and so we might say this is not the first session in which these subjects have been under discussion. However, there have been many improvements since then in all fields of metallurgical and mechanical engineering; consequently, I think that the papers today will be a little more involved and a little more complete in their technique. The first paper today will be given by one of our gentlemen of the press, who has done one of the outstanding jobs in this country in calling to our attention some of the newer processes that are being considered and being used in the metallurgical indus-

In the flash smelting of copper sulfide concentrates, the course of reactions from the burner tip, through flame "burn-out" (the point of oxygen depletion), to settled matte and slag is of particular interest in understanding the mechanisms of the process. Numerous reaction sets can be proposed to describe the chemical changes that might be taking place, but from outside the furnace no one set offers an obvious advantage in explaining the actual processes involved. Only a combination of mathematical modeling and flame and bath sampling can achieve this result. This paper shows that flash smelting, while still reasonably orderly, is a more complex process than suggested by the technical literature.

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions. Prior to the war years Inspiration's costs of mining by block-caving methods were comparable to, or even below, the costs of some open-pit operations. By the end of the war these conditions were completely changed. Underground costs had risen steadily for labor and supplies. Difficulty was being experienced in finding competent underground men and underground development was almost hopelessly behind schedule. On the other hand, open-pit costs had been sharply reduced through the development of modern earth-moving machinery and plenty of labor was available for surface work.

Mining is one of world's oldest industries. Its rich history continues into modern times. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in southeastern New Mexico is writing the next chapter in mining history. In fact, WIPP technology is the key to closure of the nuclear cycle with the disposal of nuclear waste in a deep geological repository. It might seem odd that the age-old institution of mining would be linked to the problem of nuclear waste disposal. In fact, the nuclear industry would not exist without mining. Uranium ore is mined from either underground or surface mines as the initial step in harnessing the magnificent resource of nuclear energy.

Pile foundations are widely applied in the Netherlands because of the soft soil conditions. One of the popular pile types are cast-in-situ piles, which have to be integrity tested to get accepted. Integrity testing has been applied for more than 30 years, with the number of integrity test performed nowadays exceeding 400,000 per year and subsequently there is a substantial amount of practical experience with this testing method. This paper will deal with some basics of integrity testing and describe some of the techniques that have been adopted in the Dutch pile testing practice, like detection of pile head defects with a spike type hammer pulse, and the site average or pile group average for the qualitative interpretation of measured signals.

(San Francisco Meeting, September. 1915) THE assay or estimation of the total gold content of an ore presents little difficulty, when circumstances permit of securing a thoroughly representative sample. The general practice has been fairly standardized, and such errors as occur in the results obtained are for the most part attributable to the methods of sampling rather than to those of assaying, while duplicate assays made by skilled workers usually agree closely. When it is a question of estimating the "free" or amalgamable gold of an ore, as opposed to the total gold, there is but little uniformity in the methods employed by different workers, and often equally little in the results obtained when duplicate determinations are attempted, no satisfactory standard method having been generally adopted. The methods in use are of two general types-"panning" and "amalgamation."
