Assessment of the potential for mining induced subsidence and determination of ultimate design requirements for a mining operation should be based on a number of assessment approaches. Although the rock mechanics engineer has a variety of limit equilibrium and numerical modeling tools available for assessment and prediction of subsidence effects, empirical approaches based on precedent experience provide a powerful tool for calibration/verification of analytical models and prediction of subsidence. Three separate analyses approaches have been applied to the assessment of potential subsidence for a proposed block caving mine in eastern Canada. The investigations have included an assessment of documented historical information from previous block cave mining at the site, deterministic analyses using limit equilibrium approaches to assess kinematically possible failure mechanisms, and three-dimensional numerical modeling techniques. Analyses results have been used and compared with precedent experience and documentation of subsidence behavior from previous mining to optimize the subsidence predictions for the proposed mine.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of fatty acid/fuel oil conditioning for improved flotation selectivity. Both conditioning time and intensity can provide optimum flotation selectivity as well as good recovery. Traditional conditioning seeks to optimize conditioning parameters with subsequent recovery of the hydrophobic mineral. In the fatty acid/fuel oil system many silica gangue particles are also rendered hydrophobic by the flotation collector. Fundamental studies have shown that particle-particle collisions transfer the collector reagents selectively to the mineral surfaces with the highest affinity for the reagent. This mechanism deactivates the gangue particles while increasing the collector reagent loading on the selected mineral. The degree of this transformation is directly related to the number of particle-particle collisions which can be controlled through conditioning time or conditioning mixing intensity.

Heretofore, underground coal mines in Alabama have operated under only 60 to 360 meters of cover: however, new mines (at least 5 in the early opening or development stages) will be operating under cover ranging from 600 to 660 meters. With increased rock confining pressures, roof stability problems will become more critical. Initial studies in two 7 ½ -minute quadrangle areas in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama indicate that the orientation of certain lineament and fracture-trace modes mapped from ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery correlate closely with the strike of joint and fault modes. High altitude (118,000 m) U-2 aircraft data were used to support these findings. In addition, over 50 percent of the normal faults mapped in the study area could be directly correlated with ERTS and U-2 lineaments and fracture traces. These correlations provide clues to the structural development of the Warrior coal basin and may, in turn, be used as a guide to the prediction of roof-stability conditions in advance of mining.

Introduction During the past several years, persistent concerns about an economic slowdown in India have tempered capital-expan¬sion plans. This has encouraged companies to find methods of increasing the capacity of existing production equipment. One of the more cost-effective methods of increasing produc¬tion capacity without major capital investment is to improve equipment maintenance to prevent needless machine down¬time. This can have a significant financial impact because of reduced maintenance costs and increased machine availabil¬ity. The maintenance program employs different techniques, but the analysis of the vibration behavior of machine compo¬nents to assess their condition was found to be the most accurate technique for monitoring various machine disorders. A dragline that handles overburden in open pit mines is one of the more capital-intensive pieces of production equip¬ment. It is imperative that the machine be run at its optimum capacity under the prevailing environmental conditions. Condition monitoring of the various components of the dragline through vibration analysis not only improves the machines availability but also ensures a long operation time free from sudden failure. This paper describes the application of vibration monitor¬ing and analysis techniques to assess the components of a W2000 dragline. The paper reveals that condition monitoring through vibration analysis can be as valuable in failure prevention as it is in failure analysis. Finally, the paper presents an approach to a knowledge-based expert system to the quick and correct diagnosis of mechanical faults in a dragline. Equipment A dragline is an intermittent-discharge-type excavator having a long boom at one end. Unlike other excavators, the bucket is not rigidly held by the frame structure. In favorable geomining conditions, the intensive operation of these exca¬vators is the least-expensive means of overburden removal. The basic working elements of this equipment are the hoist system, the crowd and retract system, the wing mechanism and the propel mechanism. The walking dragline is accepted as the most economical machine for stripping overburden at depths of up to 60 m (200 ft). They are electrically powered and the various motions are effected by individual drives. The Ward-Leonard system is used to provide the optimum flexibility in controlling different dc-drive motors. To mini¬mize the cost of mineral extraction, the largest such machine in India has a 24-m3 (850-cu ft) bucket with a boom length of 96 m (315 ft). Draglines are very costly, and considerable financial penal¬ties may arise from sudden stoppages due to component fail¬ures. Thus, operational reliability is of the greatest importance. Active measures are now being taken to minimize downtime by adopting condition-based maintenance techniques. Though a number of techniques come under this scheme, it has been observed that assessing the health of the dragline by measuring vibration is the best method of determining the dynamic behavior of its various rotating components to avoid any catastrophic failure. Based on criticality, the vibration-behav¬ior of the following components are studied: • motor-generator unit, • exciter unit, • hoist motor-gearbox unit, • hoist drum-gearbox unit, • drag motor-gearbox unit, • drag drum-gearbox unit and • swing motor unit The approach Increases in the vibration levels in different subsystems of the dragline were observed due to the presence of faults such as unbalance, misalignment, looseness and bad bearings. A vibration behavior study included the measurement of vibra¬tion level, trend analysis of time-domain vibration signals and vibration frequency analysis at bearing points of the components. A vibration meter, a vibration analyzer and a data collector are used. Vibration-level measurement. When the dragline was assembled and put into operation for the first time, vibration data were collected to generate baseline data for the equip¬ment (based on International Standard ISO 2372). "INTRODUCTION The purpose of this circular is to describe the sealing off of a mine fire and subsequent use of carbon dioxide gas to extinguish it.A fire of electrical origin occurred in the Valier mine of the Valier Coal Co., Valier, Franklin County, I11., on March 29, 1949, at about 1:35 p.m. It was discovered about 3:35 p.m. in 5 south west intake airway inby 1 and 2 west panels. The No. 5 southwest airway had caved, and the fire was in the top coal beneath a large fall of rock. All men, except officials, were ordered from the mine. The mine officials decided to seal the fire, and four temporary seals were erected, which isolated approximately 200 feet of 5 south west entry. The seals were completed on March 30 at 2:45 a.m., but on March 31, at 3;40 a.m,, two of them were blown out by an explosion of gas that was produced by the fire. The two seals were rebuilt, the work being completed on March 31 at 12:00 noon, but they were blown out by another gas explosion at 12:10 a.m. on April 1. It was then decided to extinguish the fire with water if possible.To accomplish this, concrete-block dams were constructed. On April 1, about 4:25 a.m., when the dams were about half completed, water was introduced into the fire area through a 2-inch pipe.On April 4, J. G, Crawford, general manager of the Valier Coal Co., notified James Westfield, chief of the Vincennes (Ind.) Branch, U. S. Bureau of Mines, by telephone of the fire in Valier mine and requested assistance to combat it. Westfield, accompanied by F. J. Smith and H. C. Brumbaugh, Federal coal-mine inspectors, went underground and inspected the seals and dams. Later, during a conference with company officials, it was decided that the concrete-block dams were not strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic pressure that would be produced by flooding the fire area. It was then decided to use carbon dioxide gas to extinguish the fire. Four seals were completed, and 5 tons of carbon dioxide gas was introduced into the fire area, which extinguished the fire."

THAT Illinois is an important mineral producing state is well known. A value of over $237,000,000 for the mineral products in 1926 indicates the magnitude of the industries. Coal mining is the largest mineral industry, and the value of its product was about 63 per cent of the total mineral production of the state. Oil and gas constituted about 8 per cent and the non-metallic minerals about 29 per cent. This 29 per cent represents the production of a varied group of mineral industries of wide geographic distribution through the state.

The 75th Regular Meeting of The Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at The Mark Conference Center, Lionshead Village, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. Past President, Shirl C. McArthur, President and General Manager, American Coal Company, Huntington, Utah, called the meeting to order. The membership was asked to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag. He introduced President Robert E. Murray, President, Western Division and Subsidiary Companies, The North American Coal Corporation, Bismarck, North Dakota. A biographical sketch follows: Since 1974, Mr. Murray has been President of the Western Division of The North American Coal Corporation, as well as President of The Falkirk Mining Company and The Coteau Properties Company, wholly-owned subsidiaries of North American. Previously, Mr. Murray, who has been associated with North American for twenty- three years, served as Vice President-Operations, Vice President - Eastern Division, and Assistant to the President of the Company. In these positions, he was responsible for North American operations in Pennsylvania, North Dakota and Utah.

A DOZEN years or so ago, the general superintendent of our company, now the president, Mr. W. H. Clingerman, detailed me to make a study of the coal-washing problem and collect data, which threw me into contact with the best washery men of the country. and took me to those districts where the washing of coal for metallurgical purposes is carried out. I investigated many kinds of coal-cleaning schemes, made numerous tests on them, and collected voluminous data, yet I confess frankly that I have had but little practical washery experience and that little has been at the Middlefork washery of the United States Fuel Co. at Benton, Franklin Co., Ill., which was put in operation last fall. While this wash-cry installation may not be the "last word," I am quite sure it embodies some long steps in advance over older designs and constructions. From the washery man's standpoint, the removal of pyrites, or marcasite, a disulfide of iron, is the one vital problem, and the one productive of the most beneficial results, so far as elimination of sulfur is concerned. Sulfates and so-called organic sulfur occupy quite a secondary -position and are generally lost sight of in coal washing: The elimination of sulfur in coal in the past has usually been accomplished by jigging in water, but lately the use of concentrating tables has been employed with good success, and some mention may be made of the flotation process on fine coal, though hardly considered practicable. Coal washing, is rapidly coming into its own, due to the depletion of low-sulfur coals for coking purposes, and before many years we predict as careful attention being given to the design and construction of coal washeries, ,as is now being given to byproduct plants and other allied industries. Heretofore, coal washing has been considered only as an incidental and a necessary evil-instead of the big problem it is one worthy of the most careful study by men well trained along technical lines and capable of delving into the fundamental principles.

An analysis of the powder patterns of the omega transition phase in three binary titanium alloys containing 8 pct Cr, 13 pet Mo, and 15 pet V, respectively, showed that all could be indexed on an orthorhombic unit cell. The unit-cell dimensions were all quite similar. There is evidence for the occurrence of more than one transition phase in Ti-Cr and Ti-V alloys. FOLLOWING the discovery of a new brittle phase in certain titanium-chromium alloys by Frost, Parris, Hirsch, Doig, and Schwartz,' named ? by these investigators, much interest has developed concerning the identification of alloy systems in which this phase exists, kinetics of the transformation in such systems, and the crystal structure of the ? phases appearing. Omega has been found in alloys of titanium-manganese, titanium-molybdenum, titanium-iron,' and titanium-vanadium.' In the present work, a study was made of the powder patterns of the ? phase occurring in alloys of Ti-8Cr, Ti-13Mo and Ti-15V in an effort to obtain a basis of comparison for ? phases appearing in these different alloys. Comparison of Alloys for ?-Phases Two hundred mesh powders of Ti-8Cr, Ti-13Mo and Ti-15V were prepared. A portion of powder sufficient for three x-ray powder specimens was placed in a Vycor tube, evacuated to less than 0.1 µ pressure, filled with argon, and sealed. The tubes were then heated to 900°C, held at this temperature for 30 min, and water-quenched. Following this transformation to the ß phase, the specimens were quenched in lead or solder pots, held at the desired temperature for varying lengths of time and water-quenched. The heat-treatments used and the phases identified are listed in Table I. The intermediate water quench was used in lieu of direct downquenching from 900°C to the bath temperature desired to circumvent the possibility of transformation of the powder specimen from ß to (ß + a) while it was being moved from the homog-enization furnace to the lead bath. To check the possibility that upquenching to the bath temperature might bring into play a different mechanism than downquenching to this temperature, resistivity measurements were compared on Ti-8Cr rod specimens which were transformed isothermally at 400°C by downquenching from the solution-treatment temperature and those which were transformed at 400" C by upquenching ß specimens from room temperature. The results are shown in Fig. 1. No difference in transformation mechanism was noted. It soon became apparent that sufficiently detailed Debye-Scherrer photograms of the ? phase in the alloys which were to be used could not be obtained by the use of copper radiation. Although satisfactory photograms of ß and ß + a phases were obtained with this radiation, the ? phase appeared to exhibit mild fluorescence, making interplanar spacing computation virtually impossible. Molybdenum radiation appeared to offer promise in cutting down this fluorescent effect, the mass absorption of titanium for molybdenum radiation being 23.7 in contrast to 204 for copper radiation. The reduction in the accuracy in determining the location of the photo-gram lines caused by the shorter wave length of molybdenum characteristic radiation did not appear to be a significant factor. Utilizing a camera of 57.3 mm radius, best results were obtained for exposure times ranging between 30 and 40 hr. Tube potential

Introduction Loss prevention programs have become absolutely necessary at any precious metals producing property. In the past eight years, one security company, specializing in precious metals mine, mill, and refinery security, has been involved in investigations at gold and silver properties that have resulted in 62 criminal convictions. Of those, all but five were employees, former employees, contract employees, or vendors for the company. Several of the cases involved losses of more than $1 million. The largest number of employees prosecuted from one investigation was 17. A recent case resulted in 12 criminal prosecutions and, several years ago, one involved an additional 12 criminal prosecutions. The most serious theft problem facing precious metals mines is employee theft. Is is estimated that 95% of the dollar losses from precious metals thefts can be attributed to employees. This does not mean there is no robbery or burglary exposure. There have been successful robberies, burglaries, and extortion cases. Most mining companies, though, provide better protection against external theft than from internal theft. That is one reason employee theft has reached epidemic proportions. Any product can be stolen No product is immune to theft. Precious metals investigations have involved the theft of high grade ore, dore, bullion, concentrates, precipitates, loaded steel wool, loaded carbon, and sump cleanup. Over a period of several years, this author's security agency has documented the theft of more than 22.5 t (25 st) of load carbon. Most mining companies do not protect the number one adsorption tank or the loaded carbon screens, which frequently leads to losses. Precipitates, electrowinning tank sludge, sump material, and concentrates are usually afforded lit¬tle protection because mine management believes it is too difficult to process. There are custom mills throughout the United States that will process any form of precious metals with no questions asked. This has become a particular problem since the certificate of ownership requirement has been eliminated by most states. Due to the large number of gold mines coming on line, many mine managers are being recruited from base metal mines, where primary security problems involve the theft of tools and company property. These managers do not understand the unique security problems associated with precious metals production. Consequently, they usually forego many security needs in the interest of economy. Unfortunately, numerous cases are on file where mining companies have suffered large losses because their physical security and their security procedures were not adequately addressed when the property was in its planning stages. MANY complaints have been filed by mine prospectors, explorers and producers about inequities in mining taxation. They have insisted upon improvement, and in the past 35 years there has been some progress. Many of the best taxation provisions made to date are those contained in the Revenue Act of 1951. Mining economics presents special problems, a fact even recognized by many textbooks. Certain provisions have been made to take care of mining taxation rights, but these have been made by Congressional act and do not represent basic, constitutional, guarantees. Despite special provision, in the form of depletion allowances, there remain injustices. The industry faces the problem of gaining adequate income tax allowances for exploration and development expenditures, operating losses, and bonus and subsidy payments. Problems in mine taxation arose soon after the adoption of the 16th Amendment. This amendment gave Congress the power to impose income taxes. Supreme Court decisions against a number of mining companies held that Congress, under its power to tax income, could tax net operating revenue before depletion allowance was deducted. The court also ruled that the right to deduct depletion is a matter of Congressional permission. There is no statute provision permitting mining stockholders to recover their investment out of dividends while the mine is being operated. The Supreme Court did not recognize that part of mining proceeds are actually amortization of the cost of mineral rights. Both these omissions stem from failure to recognize that by its very nature mining consumes its mineral rights and therefore that a part of gross proceeds are not income but recovery of capital. Suppose a Congress unfriendly to mining interests repeals the provisions that allow deductions for depletion. Under such a situation assume that a corporation buys a mineral deposit for $300,000. They mine the deposit and earn an operating profit of $500,000. At the current rates they would pay a Federal Income tax of in excess of $250,000. This venture results in a loss of $50,000 as shown in the table below. For the example given the absence of depletion provisions in income tax law would turn ore into waste rock, because the word "ore" connotes commercially mineable rock. [ ] In retrospect the conclusion is clear: If the Supreme Court had recognized that a part of mining proceeds represent in reality sales proceeds of mineral rights, then profits derived from such sales would have been taxed at the favorable long-term capital rates, instead of being taxed at the high normal, surtax and excess profits rates. It is a question whether percentage depletion allowances offset this tax situation. History The history of depletion allowances has been one of general improvement. The original act did not include depletion, but an allowance at the rate of 5 pct of gross proceeds was provided in 1913. The Acts of 1916 and 1917 allowed depletion upon cost of property, and in 1918 the law was further changed to permit depletion upon cost, or market value as of date of discovery. In 1932 metal, coal and sulphur properties were permitted to elect depletion in percentages of gross income, limited to 50 pct of net income, in lieu of cost depletion. Shortly thereafter the rule was changed and percentage depletion is now allowable in any case where it is higher than cost depletion. Since 1942 percentage depletion allowances have been extended to cover many nonmetals, and in 1951 the rate for coal mines was increased from 5 to 10 pct of gross income. The southern shoreline of Monterey Bay, extending from Moss Landing to the Monterey Peninsula, consists of sandy beaches backed by an extensive Flandrian and pre-Flandrian dune complex. This length of shoreline, proximal to areas of urban expansion, is currently being considered for development. For this reason, it is extremely important to understand the variability of beach and dune position along this stretch of coast through time. Previous studies of southern Monterey Bay have documented relatively high erosion rates of 2-8 ft/yr due to a net deficit in the sand budget. Although the sediment transport system in this region is not well understood, estimates for the sediment deficit in southern Monterey Bay range from 200,000 to 1,500,000 yd3/yr. A possible cause of the erosional regime in the southern bay is the removal of sediment by coastal sand mining operations. Based on agency reports and mining permit applications, approximate volumes of sand removed by mining range from 300,000 to 450,000 yd3/yr. These volumes are significant when compared with estimated values for the sediment budget deficit. The sand of southern Monterey Bay, a valuable commercial resource because of its hardness, roundness, amber color and range of usable grain sizes, has been removed from the surf zone, beaches and dunes of Marina and Sand City by four companies since 1906. Information regarding the cross-shore location of sand removal and the exact amounts of sand removal through time is proprietary and poorly documented. However, records documenting the time at which each company commenced and terminated mining do exist. This information suggests that the greatest amount of sand was removed between 1950 and 1968 when three mining companies were operating concurrently.

"INTRODUCTION The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron ore annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply.Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment, these may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the ""betterment"" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the intent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods now well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.In an examination of the western end of the Mesabi district one finds sludge basins containing millions of tons of millable ore rejected by washing plants which were built for economy in operating cost and with little thought of conservation, and rich tailings piles of jigging plant rejects. In addition, there is an appreciable tonnage of bawl rake pro-ducts so low-grade that it requires mixing with the best ore of the district to make it merchantable.Any of these three products is a source of additional reserves, but gangue must be removed before the products will comply with blast-furnace stipulations. All investigators are agreed that to effect this separation comminution must be fine enough for liberation, but beyond this point opinions diverge; some would seek new processes, while others adhere to methods and machines developed in other mining districts.In the investigation by the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines working in conjunction with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy,Rolla, Mo., the latter course has been followed. Attention was first given to the sludge basins mentioned. From their contents good grades of concentrates were made and the results published 4 later commercial-scale tests were made in a pilot plant of 10 tables, and the laboratory results were confirmed, The tailings from jigging plants are high in iron, and a study of their possible retreatment showed that if they are recrushed, high recoveries of acceptable grade may be expected. The results will be published later."

The Boddington Gold Mine (BGM) is located 120 km south east of Perth, Western Australia. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd and mined by contractor Henry Walker Eltin (HWE). The mine has been operating since 1987 with ore extracted from a series of pits along strike. Ore is contained within the basement rock, which is overlain by a cap rock layer and transition zone. Cap rock and basement zones require blasting.As the mine neared completion, a high-grade deposit was discovered within 50 m of an existing Western Power substation and 100 m from the processing mill. The substation provides power to the Boddington area and is a back-up power supply to the city of Perth. Due to the delicate nature of the transformers located at the power station, overhead power lines and the mill, blasting in the area was considered very high risk. As such blasting needed to be controlled for flyrock, airblast and most importantly peak vibration and frequency limits which had the potential to damage the transformers.The mine was due for closure in March 2001. The decision to mine the pit was based on its high grade, ability to be blended with lowering grades from other pits and changing of the processing technique with the expansion. This decision extended the life for a further six months.Due to the high potential risks a detailed risk assessment was conducted by Orica, Worsley and Henry Walker Eltin. The completed assessment and the major design parameters were presented to Western Power for approval. The ability to reduce the blasting risk was focused on limiting of vibration through controlling maximum charge initiated per delay, blast timing and firing direction, and other innovative control measures. OricaÆs SHOTPlan« and Sabrex« computer modelling packages were used to predict the outcome of blasts.The success of this project has opened the doors for other high risk blasting projects, which otherwise may be left unmined.

"INTRODUCTION In the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, ore-dressing tests were made on three samples procured by Bureau of Mines engineers from two properties in southeastern Juah County, Utah, each of which is known by the name Black Jack. To avoid confusion, the tests will be described under the names of the owners Kendall-Duvall and the Empire Mines.None of the samples were amenable to ore dressing for the production of high-grade manganese sinter.Ores from the Kendall-Duvall deposit represent an interesting metallurgical phase of low-grade manganese occurrence, as the occurrence of manganese as silicate (braunite) automatically governs the extent to which they can be beneficiated by mechanical methods of treatment. As less than 50 percent of the total manganese was recoverable by complex methods of treatment in a 40- percent-manganese sinter, attempts were made to recover most of the manganese in a low-calcite, intermediate-grade product that might be acceptable for subsequent metallurgical treatment. By selective flotation of calcite and manganese, up to 68 percent recoveries were obtained in plus 20-percent manganese products..No encouragement can be given for successful ore-dressing of Empire ores as represented by samples received for testing, as no products were obtained that would meet minimum marketing specifications. Empire ore contained only 1 percent lime and might be high enough in grade (19 percent manganese) for direct hydrometallurgical treatment."

THIS paper proposes to give a general description of the pumping and other machinery in use at the Thames Hauraki Pumping Station, situated on the Thames goldfields of the North Island, New Zealand. An idea of the general arrangement of the pumping engines and pumps can be obtained, together with a certain amount of detail, by reference to the illustrations. The history of the pump is rather interesting, and is as follows: -In 1894 the Government decided that a subsidy of £1 for £1up to an amoUllt not exceeding £25,000 be granted towards the erection of suitable machinery to exploit the Thames low levels.With a guarantee of such assistance a company was floated in London, with a capital of £300,000, to develop several properties at Thames. As the old Queen of Beauty Company had produced bullion worth £400,000 prior to closing down on account ofa breakdown to its pumping gear, their shaft was chosen as the site of the principal work. As soon as the company was floated, operations were commenced at the Queen of Beauty shaft, situated at the entrance of the Waio-Karaka Creek, and not more than about half a mile distant from the principal mines on the field.

This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam, which averaged 1.07 m (42 in.) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is about 13.25 ML/day (3.5 million gal per day) of water. This water deteriorates the mine's predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplilshed by pulling the 5.44 t (6 st) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track 8.05 km (5 miles) to the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

It is well known that iron-ore pellets are considered one of the best blast-furnace burden materials used today. The demand for pellets is demonstrated by the increase in pellet output from one million tons in 1955 to approximately 37 million tons in 1964. This growth continues as new plants are placed on-stream each year. The consumer generally specified (1) the acceptable content and range of chemical constituents, (2) a minimum strength determined by some standard testing procedure, (3) the size range of pellets, and (4) perhaps a measure of reducibility.
