Introduction Rockfalls occur when rocks or boulders detach from mountains or hills and tumble down. They can pose significant hazards to infrastructure such as highways, buildings, and mine open pits, and they sometimes result in personal injury or death. Prediction of rockfalls is a difficult task. Slopes that are at risk of rockfall have highly variable geometries. The location, mass, and shape of the rocks that might dislodge and fall are uncertain. Moreover, the materials that make up a slope can vary considerably from one section to another. Furthermore, the relevant material properties are usually not well known. Performing probabilistic simulations of rockfalls, combined with proper statistical analyses, has proven to be an effective and acceptable method for dealing with these difficulties [1, 2, 3]. The movements of a falling rock can be classified as freefall, bouncing, sliding, toppling, or rolling. The falling trajectory is controlled mainly by the geometry of the slope, the block shape, and the energy dissipated at each contact of the block with the slope. A rockfall model is evaluated based on its ability to efficiently predict the velocity, frequency, height of bounce, and run-out distance of falling rocks. With this information, the engineer can design remedial measures such as restraining nets and ditches. Most of the existing rockfall simulators are based on particle models that consider the falling rock as an infinitesimal particle with a mass, called the lumped mass or stereomechanical models [1, 2, 3, 4]. Other models involve hybrid methods relying on simplified assumptions. The most common hybrid methods are based on contact searching for the movement of a dimensionless object and incorporate some aspects of rigid body impact for bouncing [5, 6, 7]. There are also some rigid body models in the literature that employ simplified versions of rigid body models [8, 9]. This study applies a more sophisticated rigid body theory based on rigid body impact mechanics (RBIM), which was developed by Stronge [10, 11, 12]. The new theory captures all modes of rigid body movement. Due to the importance of the rock geometry, single impacts of ellipsoidal and prismatic rocks with rectangular cross sections are investigated. The effect of rock slenderness on rebound velocities and energies is also investigated for ellipsoidal rocks. The correspondence between the model parameters and the data from the rockfall literature data will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION THE Darwin District is 30 miles east of Olancha which is 220 miles north from Los Angeles via U. S. Highway No. 6. The ore deposits occur in the Darwin hills that have been elevated above the Darwin Plateau by typical basin and range-type faults. Some of these faults have been active quite recently as shown by the displacement of Quaternary (?) basalt flows and the rejuvenation of erosion in Darwin wash. The ore bodies occur as fissure fillings and replacement of favorable beddings in a thick series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites. Rich oxidized lead-silver ores were discovered in the early seventies. By 1875, Darwin had a population of about 5000, and by 1880 several small mills and smelters had been built. Early exhaustion of surface ores, the isolated location of the district, and fluctuation of metal prices caused intermittent operations until World War II. The district production is estimated at about $3,000,000 prior to 1900 and perhaps $4,000,000 between 1900 and 1945 when Anaconda purchased the major producing mines. For the past two years, daily production has averaged 75 tons of direct shipping and 150 tons of milling-grade ore. At present, 300 tons of mixed oxide and sulphide ore are treated by flotation, the oxidized lead minerals being activated by addition of sodium sulphide after galena and sphalerite have been recovered from the circuit. Extraction averages 85 pct of the lead, 80 pct of the silver, and about 33 pct of the zinc in a bulk concentrate. The mill is designed so that minor changes permit selective flotation of pyritic lead-zinc ores encountered at depth. GENERAL GEOLOGY The oldest rocks in the Darwin hills are a series of Paleozoic limestones, dolomites, shales and quartzites probably Pennsylvanian in age. These rocks have been intruded on the west by the Coso granite batholith and on the east by a granodiorite stock. Numerous sills and dikes grading from orthoclase granite to gabbro are exposed in the underground workings. The sedimentary rocks have been considerably folded and faulted, the most prominent structure being a northwest pitching anticlinal fold, the crest of which lies just west of the ridge line of the Darwin hills. The east limb of this fold has been intruded by the granodiorite stock and east of the stock the sediments show several closely spaced anticlines and synclines. The minor flexures on the west flank of the major fold are structurally important in localizing the ore in the Defiance and Essex mines of the Darwin group. There are three principal systems of faulting and fissuring, most of which are post-intrusive and premineral in age, with minor amounts of postmineral movement. "The semi-pilot scale plant for injection smelting of zinc calcine was operated under the committee of Joint Research Organization of Injection Metallurgy. The capacity of the plant is 10 ton metallic zinc per day. The plant was designed by the resul ts of basic and bench scale tests of the capacity of 1 ton metallic zinc per day which was published at ""Zinc '85"". The equipments of the plants, operational conditions, results of the operation such as recovery of zinc in injection furnace and condenser, combustion rate of powdered coke and consumption of energy in this process are presented in this paper. The results of the study of the feasibility of the commercial plant of 100,000 ton zinc per year by the injection smelting are also discussed in the paper. IntroductionThe research committee of new smelting process of zinc by injection was established in 1981 under the finantial support of Mining Promoting Foundation of Japan. Six zinc producing companies joined in this organization. The price of zinc was very low at that time and the energy cost, especially, cost of electric power in Japan was extremely high. Invention of a new economical process for zinc extraction had been stronglydesired. The author proposed a injection smelting of zinc as a economical process in energy saving after a calculation of thermodynamical equilibrium and heat balance(1 )(2).The research committee has been studying the injection process since 1981. The small basic experiment by using a crucible furnace was carried out from October 1981 to March 1983 and the reaction of reduction of calcine by injection smelting was ascertained (2). Vaporizatipon of zinc and behaviours of impurities were examined. After the basic experiment, the bench scale test with the production capacity of zinc of 1 ton per day was carried on from November 1983 to October 1984.The bench scale tests were carried out to obtain the proper design of feeding devices of calcines and coke into a furnace and also to obtain fundamental data for enlargement of this smelting process(3,4). The recovery of metallic zinc in this small equipments was about 50% and main loss of zinc was formation of dross in the condenser."

"In uranium mines, the purification of underground mine air can be accomplished by the removal of dust particles and radon daughters using filters. Full-scale statistically designed experiments with flow rates up to 10,000 cfm have been conducted at Denison Mines Ltd. on mine air filtration with vermiculite as a filter material. Various filtration bed thicknesses were chosen, with different face velocities through each bed thickness. Results on total dust, respirable dust and radon daughter collection efficiencies were analysed statistically. It is shown that these collection efficiencies are directly related to the filter bed thickness. However, the different face velocities seem to affect only the collection of radon daughters. Optimum collection efficiencies for a clean bed of about 30% were found for respirable dust and radon daughters, and about 41>% for total dust, using an 8-in.-thick bed and a face velocity of 500 fpm. Dust build-up on the filter bed during operation led to an increase in collection efficiency, reaching 40 to 60% after two weeks."

The problem of increasing blast-furnace efficiency through diminution of flue-dust production while operating with burdens consisting largely of fine ores has of recent years attracted the attention of metallurgists, whether directly or indirectly interested in the economies of iron smelting, and the various methods evolved from theory or practice have been submitted to wide discussion. After the very thorough and, at that time, exhaustive view of the whole subject, which was afforded to the industry by the meeting of this Institute in February, 1912, the subject was again taken up at the meeting of the Verein deutscher Eisenh?ttenleute at D?sseldorf in December, 1912. While American and German conditions are not entirely identical, it may be of interest to give here the words of the gentleman summing up the discussion at the Diisseldorf meeting: " The chief advantage offered by the use of briquettes lies in the fact that disturbances in the furnace, caused mostly by the presence of fine ores in the burden, are avoided, and that blast pressure can be considerably reduced. The resulting economies cannot be overrated, as, with lower blast consumption per ton of product, the installation will be able to take care of increased production. In consequence of lower pressure and speed of blast, heat is more efficiently utilized, flue gas temperature is lowered, and coke particles are less liable to be carried along with the flue dust, of which considerably less is produced. Finally, by increased regularity of operation and higher temperature in the lower parts of the furnace, the quality of the product is improved. The question of briquetting iron ores has grown to be one of the most important in the iron industry, and it is not any more a question of what is the cost of briquetting a ton of ore, but what, in using ore briquettes, is the cost of production of a ton of iron." They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

Over the past 20 years drum scrubbers have become a widely adopted technology within iron ore beneficiation plants. Generally, the drum scrubbers in use are considered high-capacity machines capable of accepting larger-sized feed material. Together with a water addition to a desired pulp density and a mild energy input, these large rotating machines effect an attritioning action that removes water soluble clays and other deleterious materials. Within the Western Australian iron ore industry, drum scrubbers have been successfully applied to Channel Iron, Marra Mamba, Bedded and Detrital orebodies. The introduction of drum scrubbers has enabled Western Australian producers to satisfy the substantial increase in demand for iron ore from Chinese steelmakers by making the lower-grade sections of the above orebodies economic. However, despite being a relatively simple unit process, the requirements for successful design and operation of these machines are not fully understood. This paper draws on the collective experience of both authors to provide some points to consider for incorporating drum scrubbers into iron ore beneficiation plant flow sheets.

Mining project development, permitting, environmental regulatory and compliance issues in Uzbekistan and the CIS are every bit as complex as those in the western world. The vast array of environmental permitting, monitoring and reporting regulations for mine project development and operation in the CIS are based on existing Soviet environmental regulations and policies which have remained in place after these countries gained independence from the former Soviet Union. The approach to mine project permitting in the CIS differs from the western world. Similar pre- feasibility, baseline data collection, and environmental monitoring requirements allow the project proponent to coordinate preparation and submission of documentation to support project permitting for Uzbek regulatory requirements with environmental requirements imposed by financial institutions and western environmental compliance structures. Implementation of generally accepted western environmental best management controls and monitoring into mine design, construction, and operation will not, however, ensure automatic compliance with Uzbek environmental regulations. Uzbek environmental compliance requirements that differ from western requirements include: 1) development and maintenance of an environmental database constructed specifically to address annual, biannual and quarterly statistical reporting requirements for emissions of "environmental pollutants" from the facility into air, surface water, ground water and soil; 2) preparation and submittal of specific permits for water utilization, hazardous waste storage and disposal, landfill construction and operation, and stack emissions inventories; and 3) procurement of approvals from the Uzbekistan State Committee for Nature Protection (generally analogous to the US Environmental Protection Agency). This paper outlines and summarizes the regulatory requirements for mine site permitting and the procedures for environmental monitoring and reporting during mining operation in Uzbekistan and the CIS.

The Strawberry tungsten mine is in the Jackass Mining District, in an isolated portion of eastern Madera County, near the southeast corner of the Yosemite National Park. The deposit was discovered in 1941, and production started in 1943 when the mill was completed. With the exception of 1946 and 1947, production has been continuous. The area in the vicinity of the mine is granite containing islands of sedimentary beds highly altered by metamorphism that resulted from the intrusion of acid igneous rock. Schoelite occurs in almost vertical lenses of tactite between the limestone and the granite.

The Péchelbronn oil field is located in the province of Alsace, in the Rhine Valley, about 30 miles north of Strasbourg. It is approximately 4 miles wide and 12 miles long, extending from the villages of Lobsann on the north to Wintershausen and Ohlungen near Haguenau on the south. (See Fig. 1.) The productive area includes about 44,000 hectares (107,680 acres). The name Péchelbronn signifies "pitch-spring" or "pitch-fountain." The first exploratory galleries were driven in from the hillside in 1735; and in 1745 the first official concession was granted by the French government and the first pit sunk to a depth of about 30 ft. Extraction by drilled wells was begun in 1879, supplementing the mining operations, and during the next 10 years 200 wells were drilled to an average depth of 172 m. (568 ft.). The bringing in of two "gusher" wells, in 1882 and 1888, respectively, was followed by the abandonment of all underground work. Underground mining, with a view to increasing the production of petroleum by recovering the oil left in the sands after drilling wells, was resumed in 1916. This mining operation started by sinking shaft No. 1 to a depth of 150 m. (495 ft.). The underground developments were pushed during 1917 and 1918 and the annual production of the Péchel-bronn field was increased to about 50,000 metric tons or 350,000 bbl. On the signing of the Versailles Treaty the province of Alsace, which had been taken by Germany as the result of the war of 1870, was returned to France, and the proprietary rights were taken over by the French Government. Concessions or leases, which embraced all the known oil-bearing territory of the field, were granted to the present operating company, Mines de Péchelbronn. This company followed both the drilling and the mining methods of the previous company.

AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

The objective of the Automatic Fire Sensing and Suppression Systems for Mobile Mining Equipment program is to document the design, fabrication, factory testing, 11-month in-mine testing, and final demonstrations of auto¬matic fire protection systems on several units of mobile mining equipment including trucks, front-end loaders, cranes, draglines, coal haulers, and cutters. Proper sealing of all system components from the elements, especially in corrosive mine conditions, is essential for reasonable life-cycles with minimum maintenance. Also, adequate power supplies, wire, connectors, and plumbing with adequate protection from the harsh mine environments and physical damage were necessary during the in-mine tests. The fire protection systems were developed from technology employed during two previous Bureau of Mines contracts: HO122053, Improved Sensors and Fire Sensing Systems for Mining Equipment, and H0232059, Validation Testing of Truck Fire Protection Systems.

"Refractory materials are an integral part of aluminium production. One special feature of aluminium making is the prominent role of sodium in all parts of the production process. This presence of sodium inflicts stresses on the refractory materials through reactions and may cause severe damages to the refractory linings. The present paper address possible reactions between sodium and refractories in anode bake furnaces, electrolytic pots and casting furnaces. The discussions presented in the paper points to the importance of selecting materials with excellent alkali resistance in all parts of the aluminium making process, although alkali resistance is not the sole parameter to determine refractory life-time. ""Acid"", i.e. silica-rich alumino-silicate refractories are shown to be the best materials for aluminium electrolysis cell potlinings, whereas high- alumina refractories based on minerals like andalusite seems to be the preferred choice for anode bake furnaces as well as cast house furnaces."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has determined a method for calculating coal mine portable power cable thermal life for a specified temperature loading. This work was the culmination of a multifaceted research project involving (1) accelerated life tests of insulation and jacket materials and (2) steady-state and cyclical loading of cables. Composite Arrhenius curves were derived for common insulation and jacket materials to identify the key cable quality that precipitates thermal failure. Plots of temperature rise versus current for popular cable sizes were then referenced to develop a correspondence between cable life, based upon thermal degradation and current loading. Predictions of cable thermal life were made through integration over variable load cycles and, consequently variable operating temperatures. This procedure may have utility for both the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration and mining machine designers in determining the appropriate cable size for new equipment.

Tin mining on Seward Peninsula, Alaska, has been intermittently active since the early 1900's. Most of the recorded production (over 2,200 short tons of metallic tin) has been obtained from placer deposits, but recent production also has resulted from development of lode deposits associated with intrusive rocks occurring in the western part of the peninsula. Generally, the lode deposits containing tin minerals (principally cassiterite) are found in dikes, in granite masses, and in silicate zones in limestone overlying the granite. Both the placer and lode deposits have been of considerable strategic interest to the Government because of the almost total absence of a domestic supply of tin. The most important tin-lode deposit discovered to date is in the Cassiterite dike at the Lost River mine, on Cassiterite Creek about 85 miles northwest of Nome. This highly altered, rhyolite porphyry dike averages 12 feet in thickness, strikes N. 75° to 85° E., and dips steeply to the south; it can be traced on the surface for about 8,000 feet. Throughout its explored length of about 2,200 feet the dike everywhere contains some tin and tungsten in veinlets and disseminations; economic concentration of the are minerals, however, is confined to definite shoots. The ore minerals include cassiterite, stannite, hulsite, paigeite, wolframite, scheelite, and base-metal sulfides; gangue minerals include fluorite, boron silicates, and lithium-bearing minerals. Some ore minerals also occur in the numerous other dikes and in the granite and intruded limestone in and adjacent to the mine.

As a result of the world depression and the consequent heavy fall in the price of tin, Malaya joined with other great tin producing: countries of the world in a restriction scheme that heavily restricted production from its individual mines. This condition, together with the knowledge that it was becoming more and more difficult in, Malaya to acquire further areas and so prolong the existence of a specific company's activities, induced Mr. H. G. Scott, managing director for the Siamese Tin Syndicate Ltd., to consider other possible sources of production. Mainly because of the conditions that obtained in Tasmania, he turned his attention to that country, where, not only could mining be carried on without restriction as to output, but where the incidence of the exchange position created favourable conditions for operation. Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining affects these properties is therefore important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. To determine the impact of mining activities on soil hydraulic properties, soils from undisturbed areas, areas of roughly graded mine spoil, areas with replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the soil hydraulic properties of the four representative areas, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content and saturated hydraulic conductivity. Using this data, Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) simulations and risk analyses were performed to investigate mining’s effects on changes in soil erosion potential. Significant differences were seen in the hydraulic properties of the soils in the representative areas due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. The WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases as a result of mining activities disturbing the soil. The simulations also indicate that the erosion potential may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

The advantage of microorganisms used in bioleach systems to conventional chemical reaction systems is that these apply the available energy more precisely where it is needed, either directly onto the mineral of interest or by efficiently catalyzing the production of a reactant. The literature cover the range from empirical models used in describing macro heat balance in heaps to detailed studies relating the micro heat effects of bacteria adhesion energy to the surface of minerals. In this paper, the heat effects are reviewed in a general way describing bioleaching in two macro systems, heap leaching and slurry bioreactors. The micro scale heat effects is the reactions and conditions at the microorganism scale, including the mechanism of leaching and bacterial behavior.
