The Deserado Mine of Western Fuels- Utah Inc. installed a micro-computer based mine wide monitoring and control system for mine environment, beltway fire protection, belt operating parameters, and equipment power utilization. The Colorado School of Mines was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to document, evaluate, and report on the system design, procurement, installation, tests, and operation. This paper results from that project. The paper compares planned activities such as installation and start up, procurement contract specifications and system layout with actual performance to develop recommendations for future installations by mine operators.

Also there are frequent changes in the distribution of. stock control. The percentages given rep-resent only the participation that has been identified definitely, even though it is known in some cases with fair certainty that larger interests exist, as, for instance, American participation in foreign chromite companies. In bringing together these figures we have had the cordial co-operation of the United States Bureau of Mines, the United States Geologi-cal Survey, the Mineral Division of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, the Brookings Institution, and of many specialists connected with the mineral industries covered. The report does not cover the entire list of minerals. Coal, although it is one of the most important minerals, was omitted because , not more than one or two per cent of the world's production comes from mines that are owned by companies foreign to the countries where the coal is produced. Others, such as gold, are omitted because sufficient data have not yet been accumulated. It is hoped that some of these may be covered in subsequent reports. It is not our purpose here to discuss the significance of the figures sub-mitted, but only to point out the general nature of the problems on which they have a bearing.

THE works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The mine was opened previous to 1860, but has only been worked systematically during the last five or six years. The vein is a fissure vein from ten to twenty feet in thickness in the gneiss of the

The solubility of nilrogen in liquid binary alloys of iron with Litanium. zivconium, columbium, vanndiurn, and tantalum was measured for alloy composiLions up to the solalbility limils of lhe alloy nitrides. All five alloying agents were found to decrease markedly the activity coefficient of nitrogen in liquid ivon. The metal/nitvogen mole ralios in the alloy nitrides formed were generally .found to be slighlly greater than 1.0, but in no case greater than 1.5. From the experimental data, the standard free energies of fortmation of titanium and zir-conium nitrides have been calculated for the Lemperaluve range 1550° to 1750 C. The solublily Products for columbium, tantalum, and vanadium nitrides are also reported. A number of research investigations have examined the effect of refractory metals on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. Although data on zirconium are not available, investigators are in agreement that titanium, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum markedly increase the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. This fact alone makes desirable the acquisition of thermodynamic data for these elements in liquid iron. Since refractory metals are known to be stable nitride formers, they have been suggested as steel denitrifying agents, and some of their nitrides have recently been considered as containment materials for liquid iron and iron alloys. Most available thermodynamic data for these metals relate to their dilute concentrations, but effective thermodynamic treatment of these applications requires data at concentrations near the solubility limit of the alloy nitride. Although some work has been done at relatively high alloy concentrations in liquid iron (particularly for vanadium 2,3 and titanium 2,4), the results have been somewhat contradictory. Disagreement may be partly attributed to the fact that the compositions of most refractory metal nitrides have been shown to be nonstoichiometric, and to vary 2,5-8 depending on the temperature and nitrogen gas pressure with which the solid nitride phase is in equilibrium. One purpose of this study consequently has been to determine the compositions of the refractory metal nitrides precipitated from a liquid iron solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rao and Parlee2 and Evans and Pehlke 9 have discussed the technique for measuring the solubility product of an alloy nitride phase in liquid iron by finding the point of departure of the nitrogen solubility from Sieverts' law. The method consists of measuring the solubility of nitrogen in a melt of iron containing a known concentration of a second metal as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. In this study the second metal was one of the refractory metals titanium, zirconium, columbium, vanadium, or tantalum. When the nitrogen pressure at which the refractory nitride forms is reached, a deviation of the measured solubility of nitrogen in the melt from Sieverts' law is observed in the form of a "pressure halt." The concentration of nitrogen in the melt associated with this breakpoint in the nitrogen-absorption curve is then used to calculate the nitride solubility. The Sieverts method was used to measure nitrogen solubility as a function of nitrogen pressure and temperature. The experimental equipment for this technique has been previously described in detail. 1,9 Charge materials used were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferrovac-E) and the best commercial grades of the refractory metals obtainable (in all cases at least 99.8+ pct pure). Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to hold all melts except those containing zirconium, for which zirconia crucibles were necessary. Temperatures were measured by a disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diameter sight hole in the crucible lid. By means of a technique previously described, 9 in which the refractory-metal nitride was precipitated at one temperature then redis-solved by raising the temperature 50°C and precipitated again at a higher temperature, it was possible to obtain data over a temperature range of up to 200°C on a single melt. The study of Co-rich manganese crusts has reached the level which allows to start prospecting works in the observable future, and furthermore, probably, exploitation of ore deposits. In this connection, among other goals, the necessity to analyze a distribution of ore bed parameters in details is quite urgent. Foremost, these are crust thicknesses in connection with landforms and elements of submarine mountains relief. This report is based on representative sampling made in course of research cruises run by SSC Yuzhmorgeologiya over guyots of the Magellan Seamounts. Crustal covers could overlie seafloor surfaces which are confined to a various landforms and elements of relief under the condition, that they are free of sediments. These are planed parts of a summit surfaces, edges, spurs, rectilinear parts of slopes, intermountain saddles and volcanic edifices. It is known, that crustal thicknesses are different at a various forms of relief [1]. We processed statistically the data around crustal thicknesses, which were sampled by dredging and submersible drilling (Tables 1, 2).

As we enter the new century and close out the old, it has become standard procedure for most blasters to complete a blasting log or shot report following a blast. However, how can you be sure these completed blasting logs are worth the paper or electronic space they occupy.3 Is the recorded data accurate and meaningful? Will the blasting logs stand up under investigation? This paper will attempt to define the purpose of a blasting log, illustrate common mistakes, discuss potential problems, and indicate steps that a company or individual blaster can take to improve and protect against costly errors. The end result will be a reminder of the importance of accurate documentation following a blast that must be given the same individual effort as went into the blasting itself. This paper will also attempt to achieve a proactive training resource to improve the use of blasting logs. A completed blasting log is, quite possibly, the only witness to the overall credibility of the work of the responsible blaster. The log may remain perpetually silent, only to end up in a file that is moved progressively with time to various levels of long-term storage. But, will this silent witness be ready to speak out should a concern arise from the blasting ? Will the blasting log communicate with authority and credibility, or will it be ridiculed by investigation and silenced in shame with costly adverse results for the blaster and company? It is not enough to simply complete a blasting log. The information it contains must be accurate enough to stand the test of time and arduous scrutiny. Unfortunately, most blasters and their associated blasting companies do not realize the status of the silent witness until it is too late.

"The mining and mineral industries have been, and remain, a major component of the Canadian economy. There are approximately 560 producing mining establishments of which there are some 130 metal mines and an equal number of non-metal mines, the balance being quarries for stone, sand and gravel. For 17 metals and minerals, Canada ranks within the top five as a world producer. There are 29 metallurgical plants. Employment in mining, smelting and refining was about 150000 in 1990. Mineral production, including coal, is about $20 billion. Exports up to the metal stage amount to $15 billion providing a positive trade balance of some $10 billion.The producing industry has a wide diversity of products. The companies range from small single mining operations to large multinationals. In terms of technology the industry has always been in the forefront of cost-effective practice, either using home-grown innovation or freely importing technology from around the world,The Mining Industry Technology Council (MITEC) makes an annual survey of the exploration and R&D expenditures of the senior mining industry that is the mining companies that are involved in mineral production from their existing mines. It does not include those companies solely involved in exploration using funds raised through equity sales.Table 1 shows the actual R&D and exploration expenditures as a per cent of sales. R&D shows a rising trend since 1988although the drop in value of output due to lower prices must be recognized as contributing to the increase. The point about this compilation is that the mining industry re-invests some 4070 of its sales in both exploration and R&D in order to sustain itself. Exploration for the renewal of metal inventories for future mining is a process unique to mining. It is not classified as R&D, and the necessity for this investment goes unrecognized by those who state that the industry does not do enough R&D."

Arthur Jarman, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (communication to the Secretary*):—All designs for modern metallurgical and chemical laboratories should provide each student's desk with a hood or cupboard for the removal of fumes, but I doubt the advisability of placing air-baths and similar apparatus close to the hot plate. It seems to me that unless the draft be exceptionally strong the fumes from ordinary wet assay work will corrode the iron-work of the fittings, in which case the baths would have to be removed to a general desk in order to lighten the work of the laboratory attendant. Since the laboratory described by Mr. White has been in use for two years, I should like to ask if any inconvenience has resulted from this corrosion. If not, it is certainly an important improvement to have the air-baths and similar apparatus placed on the student's desk. The hoods described by Mr. White are supplied with a good draft by means of a fan, which gives them a great advantage

In a solvent extraction (SX) plant, stage efficiency calculations are used to determine mixer efficiency. With modern extractants and mixing equipment, it is generally taken for granted that stage efficiencies will be above 95%, but this is not always the case. Dependant on mixer/solution conditions, stage efficiencies can occasionally be low, therefore leading to higher reagent usage. Proper methods to identify when stage efficiency performance is below expectations, and ways to identify if it is an equipment or chemical issue are valuable tools for a plant metallurgist. With these tools and skills an on-site metallurgist can more quickly return their SX plant to proper operation. This paper will discuss methods for analyzing stage efficiency, evaluating factors that may affect stage efficiency, and evaluating the impact of stage efficiency on the overall operation.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the mineral resources of the Upper Missouri River Basin as a part of a comprehensive water and related land resources study by six Bureaus of the Department of the Interior, coordinated by the Department?s Missouri River Basin Field Committee. The mineral resource study covers an area of about 18,000 square miles within the Great Plains physiographic province of central Montana. Exposed formations in the plains are chiefly flat-lying Cretaceous sediments. Plutonic rocks crop out in the central parts of the mountain uplifts, with steeply tilted Paleozoic sediments exposed around the margins. Oil and gas have been produced from several fields in the study area; total value exceeds $45 million. Coal-bearing formations of Upper Jurassic and Cretaceous age cover approximately 45 percent of the study area. Total production of coal since 1880 has been between 40 and 50 million tons, exceeding $75 million in value. Total metal production has been about $52.5 million. Industrial mineral production from 1925 through 1960, is valued at $24 million.

AT Fresnillo a series of veins that has yielded very large quantities of silver and other metals has been developed over a length of 6500 ft. and to a depth of over 3000 ft. In the course of this work striking changes in the mineralogy and metal content of the principal veins have been disclosed and are well illustrated by assay data and ore reserve calculations. This paper describes those changes and suggests their bearing on theories of ore deposition. LOCATION The Fresnillo mines and the adjacent city of Fresnillo are in the central part of the state of Zacatecas, 35 miles northwest of the capitol city of Zacatecas, once a great silver-mining center whose total production is said to place it fourth in the world. Another famous old silver district, Sombrerete, lies northwest of Fresnillo. Fresnillo is connected by a 5-mile branch with Fresnillo station on the Mexican National Railways line from Juarez to Mexico City. Lying near the southwestern edge of the central plateau of Mexico, Fresnillo is surrounded by a semi-arid rolling plain from which rise widely scattered low hills. One of these is Proano hill, an inconspicuous elevation rising barely 300 ft. above the plain, but in and around Proa[n]o hill are the Fresnillo mines, and it is marked now by a great gash cut by gloryhole mining. HISTORY According to an account written in 1834 by Francisco García, then Governor of the state of Zacatecas, Fresnillo was discovered in 1554, and a presidio was established there in 1568 to protect travelers on the road between Zacatecas and Sombrerete. Little is known of the earliest mining at Fresnillo. which seemingly began soon after its discovery, but by piecing together various accounts, it appears that mines there were working in 1717 and were notable active in 1751 under an administrator named Murguía, who left detailed notes describing them. In 1757, however, the mines became inactive because of difficulties with creditors and no doubt also because of increasing water troubles, and they remained abandoned until 1830. In 1830 the mines at Fresnillo became the property of the State of Zacatecas because the interest of Governor García had been aroused by the long disregarded notes of Murguía. Under Garcia's energetic leadership the mines were reopened, and silver production began in 1832 in spite of serious difficulties, including abnormal rains and an epidemic of cholera. In 1833 English capital was sought to allow installation of steam-driven Cornish pumps at the two principal shafts and to build the great hacienda de benefacio (the present Proano hacienda). The company formed in 1835 (Cia. Zacatecano-Mexicana) operated successfully until 1872, when its career was brought to an end by the political and economic disturbances

"The present contribution examines, in some detail, what appear to be the three outstanding features of the field occurrence of the conformable ""pyritic"" deposits. These are their association with fragmental volcanic rocks (and derivatives), their occurrence in sediments of near-shore formation, and their highly variable structural associations.In a recent paper it has been suggested that two such ""pyritic"" de-posits in New Brunswick may have originated as marine concentrations of volcanic base metal and sulphur compounds, and that many of their present features are the result of diagenesis, folding, and regional metamorphism. This is now put for-ward as a general explanation for the particular class of deposit considered.Such deposits should, on this hypo-thesis, be regarded quite simply as an integral part of the particular geological environment in which they occur -as a normal, though minor, sedimentarry type developed, char-acteristically, in near-shore and shelf facies of intravolcanic units formed along the margins of eugeosynclines. They should not be considered -as, for example, is required by the re-placement theory -as later features simply superimposed on a geological situation to which they are genetically unrelated. Where they are associated with folds and other structures, this may be attributed, from one in-stance to another, to mechanical migration during folding, weaknesses induced by pre-existing sulphides, and, occasionally, to fortuitousness.In the light of this postulated origin, it is suggested that the first stages in regional prospecting for deposits of this particular class should be broadly palaeogeographical. Later phases of the search should then be directed to the delineation of sedimentary facies and, finally, to the investigation of geological structure."

THE problem of extracting alumina from clay and low-grade bauxites has been the subject of considerable interest for some time. The basic reason, of course, lies in the fact that known reserves of high-grade bauxite are not inexhaustible and that the present commercial process cannot successfully cope with low-grade bauxites or clay. Ultimately it may be necessary to use these poorer raw materials for all commercial operations. An unprecedented demand for aluminum during the war emergency and the constantly threatened shortage of imported bauxite caused the United States Government to take an active role in this problem. Through the National Academy of Sciences, the War Production Board and the Defense Plant Corporation, it investigated processes and finally selected four to be used in the construction and operation of four experimental plants. Each plant was to be designed in such a way as to facilitate its incorporation into a larger commercial plant should the need arise. The Chemical Construction Corporation process, or "Chemico" ammonium sulphate process as it is better known, was one of the four selected. The extensive literature and patents on record before the war generally follow one of two process-types depending upon the extracting reagent used. One group uses an acid reagent, the other an alkali. The Chemico process uses an acid reagent. For those interested in other processes described in literature, there is a short bibliography at the end of this paper. The basic steps of all acid extraction processes are: (I) to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble, (2) to separate the released alumina from impurities and insoluble gangue, and (3) to recover the reagent for re-use. THE PROCESS AS PLANNED In April 1941, a group of chemists and engineers of the Chemical Construction Corp. became interested in the problem of extracting alumina from clays and low-grade bauxites and, under the leadership of Mr. Blakeslee Barnes, Vice President and General Manager of the Company, first drafted a process in July of that year-five months prior to Pearl Harbor. The work continued in our research laboratories and with a small pilot plant. By June 1943, the work had progressed to a point where it was possible to apply for a patent on the process which was U.S. patent 2,405,426, granted August 6, 1946. Immediately prior to the development of the Salem plant, the process was envisaged to be as follows: I. The first step was to make the aluminum silicates acid soluble. It was planned: (a) Clay or low-grade bauxite would be roasted at 700 to 800°C (1292° to 1472°F), (b) The roasted ore would then be leached with hot aqueous ammonium bisulphate to form a slurry. The Bureau of Mines Coal Carbonization Laboratory has been interested for the past 20 years in the quality of coke in connection with the selection of coals for the manufacture of coke. The principal experimental. method of carbonization, whereby 100- to 200-pound charges are carbonized in sheet-steel cylindrical retorts with recovery and determination of the properties of coke, gas, and products, was developed in cooperation with the American Gas Association,4 5 and it is known as the BM-AGA method. Results of the investigations of 90 coals included in the BM-AGA Survey of the Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals have been published; 6 and, in addition to these, about 200 coals have been carbonized over limited temperature ranges. Because coke from cylindrical retorts differs in shape from that made in rectangular ovens, the BM-AGA method has been criticized, although those who developed it have always believed that it served well as a means of measuring the relative strengths of cokes from different coals. It is recognized that no laboratory-method carbonization, even on a large twit, can yield results that exactly duplicate those obtained in commercial ovens and retorts. However, with the completion and satisfactory performance of an experimental vertical slot oven of 500-pound capacity at the University of Illinois Geological Survey Laboratory,' the opportunity to directly compare BM-AGA coke with coke made by two-sided heating became available and the necessary test apparatus was installed. The Bureau of Mines slot oven, which is similar to that designed by the University of Illinois Geological Survey, has been used to carbonize 11 coals (or blends) tested by the BM-AGA method. This report compares the results obtained by the two methods.
