The Center for Disease Control [CDC] is in the midst of a twenty year project, part of which includes demolishing existing buildings and erecting taller, more modern structures within the same foundation foot print. Controlled Blasting Inc, a large and experienced construction drilling and blasting company in Metro Atlanta, was contracted to provide the drilling and blasting for the new building foundations. Working on a construction site, in this type of environment, creates many challenges for the drilling and blasting crews.

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. Cathode wear has become an increasing challenge in the aluminum industry due to the use of more graphitized materials. Today, there exist no standard laboratory methods for measuring cathode wear where different commercial materials can be ranked. The typical average wear rate in an electrolysis cell is quite small. The aim of this work was to design a test method where the wear could be accelerated compared to industrial cells. It was focused on polarized tests where the cathode is exposed to electrolyte, which gives higher aluminium carbide solubility. The cathode materials were characterized by microscopy and image analysis.

"In the flotation process the contact angle is an important indicator of the hydrophobicity of a mineral particle. There is considerable literature showing that the contact angle increases when the chain length of the alkyl group associated with the collector molecule used to render the valuable mineral particle hydrophobic increases. The extent to which an alkyl group interacts with surrounding water molecules is quantified thermodynamically by the excess Gibbs energy. In the present paper it is shown that there exists generally a strong linear relationship between the excess Gibbs energy of the alkyl group associated with the collector and the contact angle. The structure-activity of such alkyl groups is in turn related to the total surface area, molecular volume, the molar volume, molecular weight of the functional groups in the molecule and interaction energies. It is proposed that the demonstrated relationship is indicative of the role which the alkyl group component of the collector, which is attached to the mineral particle, plays in increasing the extent to which water molecules at the surface of the mineral are rejected from the surface thus increasing the contact angle. The relationship between excess Gibbs energy and surface tension is further explored with a view to relating the observations quantitatively to the parameters in the Young equation.INTRODUCTIONThe issue of wettability of materials is of great importance to many industrial applications. Wettability studies usually involve the measurement of contact angles which indicate the degree of wetting when a solid and liquid interact. As is well known the contact angle (O) is the angle between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetting perimeter which is the zone where the air, water and solid phase merge. When the air bubble attaches to the solid surface there is an increase in the air/solid interface area and a decrease in the solid/water interface area. For attachment to occur the cosine of the contact angle should be less than 1 and this will be promoted if the interfacial surface tension between the air and the solid (? SV) is low. Classically the relationship between these parameters has been expressed through the Young equation (1) for a perfectly flat surface:"

"The silver nitrate titration method is a rapid and acceptably accurate means of analyzing for cyanide in leach solutions that contain primarily free cyanide. However, in leach solutions containing elevated levels of copper, the titrimetric method overestimates the concentration of free cyanide and underestimates the concentration of weak and dissociable (WAD) cyanide. The authors have developed a modified potentiometric (MP) titration method for determining WAD cyanide that overcomes issues associated with high copper levels in solution. The new MP-WAD method involves addition of a chemical ligand to the sample prior to silver nitrate titration to release cyanide bound to copper. Once released from copper, cyanide in solution is no longer affected by the presence of copper, and titration results are quantitative rather than empirical. In multiple laboratory trials with synthetic solutions and complex actual leach solutions, analytical results obtained with the new MP-WAD method were found to be within about ±5% of analyses obtained with the USEPA OIA-1677 WAD cyanide analytical method.IntroductionThe silver nitrate titration method is widely used to estimate the concentration of cyanide in leach solution for purposes of cyanidation process control. Cyanide determined by silver nitrate titration is commonly referred to as “free” cyanide, but frequently should be referred to as “titratable” cyanide. Titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide when metal-cyanide complex concentrations (e.g., cadmium, copper, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc) in solution are low. In other words, titration will only yield a reasonably accurate measurement of free cyanide if the solution primarily contains free cyanide."

The Bauer company was founded in 1790 by coppersmith Sebastian Bauer in Schrobenhausen, a small town north-west of Munich. The original workshop business carried out works including repairs to church roofs and brew kettles. Later the company expanded its operations to encompass water pipe installation, which it continued through to the 1980s. In addition to installing water pipes it then also began drilling wells, which were sometimes constructed using very simple methods, such as tripod frames (Figure 1).

Water-cooled parts of submerged arc furnaces are potentially dangerous, especially if molten matte or slag contacts the water. Explosion hazards and metal run-outs generate high costs for production loss and repairs - not mentioning the possible loss of human life. This paper reports about practical results of wear measurement on intensive water-cooled tap-holes and spray-cooled side walls. On the one hand an embedding technology has been developed, that is used e.g. in water-cooled copper tap blocks or copper side wall coolers. Second the application of the sensor installation on the inner side of a water-cooled steel shell will be discussed. The fibre-optic sensor is fed through a specially arranged piping system and measures numerous temperatures over its entire length. By using the thermal conductivity of the installed refractory materials the lining thickness is calculated. The practical installation of the sensors will be discussed and the results of the wear measurement will be compared to the theoretical FEM calculations. The highly sensitive and accurate temperature measurement, as well as the recalculation of the impact of differences in the cooling water temperature, allows the exact determination of the remaining lining thickness. The discussed technologies offer efficient and safe monitoring of tap-holes, side walls and other endangered parts of pyro-metallurgical smelters.

Silver and cupric ions have been proven to play the roles of catalysts to promote the oxidation kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid solution. In this study, the interaction between silver ions and cupric ions during ferric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution has been investigated. The electrochemical study by Tafel analysis showed a significant boost of dissolution rate for chalcopyrite dissolution in Fe3+- Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution after Ag+ was added in the solution. For 10 ppm Ag addition, the dissolution rate of chalcopyrite increased to 7.94 ×10-6 A/cm2 from 3.2 ×10-7 A/cm2, when Ag+ was absent. On the other hand, the effect of Cu2+ on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in Fe3+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solution was not obvious from electrochemical measurements. The chalcopyrite leaching tests in different acid solutions showed that silver addition had an obvious catalytic effect on promoting chalcopyrite dissolution. Comparing the leaching rates of chalcopyrite leached in Fe3+ containing, Fe3+-Ag+ containing, Fe3+-Cu2+ containing and Fe3+-Cu2+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solutions, it was found in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution, the leaching rate was highest among all the aqueous acid systems. Further leaching tests suggested that with increase of the Ag+ concentration from 0 to 20 ppm, the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution also increased and reached 57.62% with 20 ppm Ag+ addition after 24 h. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most important copper mineral in copper hydrometallurgy and it accounts for nearly 80% of the universal copper resource (Olvera, Rebolledo, Mora, Dixon, & Asselin, 2018). The hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite has been intensively studied with emphasis on solving the slow dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid environment. A variety of aqueous systems, such as sulfate (Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima, & Tsunekawa, 2001), chlorides (Liu, Chen, & Yang, 2017), and ammonia (Hua et al., 2018) have been studied to improve copper leaching. From another perspective, chalcopyrite leaching studies have indicated that the mechanism of chalcopyrite dissolution in acid solution is essentially electrochemical (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). Therefore, extensive studies have recently been carried out to explain the dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in different media by various electrochemical techniques.

"The traditional metallurgical scale-up techniques for flotation plants are based on lumped flotation rate constants, dimensionless hydrodynamic numbers and the use of safety factors. Once the plant has been designed, the flotation principles that govern scale-up play almost no role in the optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical targets. This deficiency can potentially lead to a plant design incapable of meeting its targets, especially when circuits incorporate large flotation cells. This paper demonstrates the application of the k = PSbRf model in providing a suitable framework for flotation modelling, scale-up and circuit optimisation, thus presenting an integrated approach to the problem. Studies were conducted at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog concentrator to characterise cell hydrodynamics, gas dispersion properties, fioth flow behaviour, entrainment and ore floatability to obtain the key data necessary to develop a model for the flotation circuit. The findings of these studies are presented in this paper, which provide valuable insights into the modelling and optimisation of the Red Dog flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONThe traditional methodology for flotation scale-up and plant design is based on the rule-of-thumb with safety factors, dimensionless hydrodynamic group similitude considerations, etc. With the recent trend towards larger flotation cells with volumes of 150 m3 and greater in concentrators, the problem of scale-up has become even more acute. The scale-up factors that may have been tolerated on smaller cells are not applicable to larger cells. The transportation of froth in these large cells adds further complexity to the problem. Arbiter et al. (1980) foresaw this problem and pointed out that if scale-up were attempted by rule-of-thumb and trial-and-error, then the probability of failure would increase with scale. This problem is confounded by the fact that the design and scale-up considerations used for a new flotation circuit play almost no role in optimisation of the circuit to meet its metallurgical target. This results in a plant design incapable of meeting its metallurgical targets. There have been several instances where new concentrators have required significant circuit modifications and additional capacity to achieve design targets."

The works of the Ore Knob Copper Company are situated in the county of Ashe in the northwestern part of the State of North Carolina, about ten miles from the Virginia line, at an elevation of 4600 feet above the sea. The nearest railroad station is at Marion, Smythe County, Virginia, about forty-five miles distant. The roads from the railroad to the works have been constructed by the company for the transportation of their material, and are very hilly, and in certain seasons of the year in bad repair. Transportation is therefore always limited and never easy, although it is done by contract at a very low price. The main difficulty with the transportation is not so much its cost as the fact that it puts a limit to the production of the works. These unfavorable conditions make it necessary for the owners of the mine to smelt their ores and to send to market nothing except the metal, which alone will bear the cost of transportation. The synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite powder from spent zinc-carbon batteries was investigated using a series of physical treatment, sulfuric acid leaching and coprecipitation. Physical separation methods such as crushing, magnetic separation and sieving were applied to generate a non-magnetic material of 8- mesh undersize for subsequent leaching process. The 8-mesh undersize of the spent zinc-carbon batteries was assayed 23.9% Mn, 14.9% Zn, and 4% Fe. Metal extractions obtained in sulfuric acid leaching at the solid/liquid ratio of 1:10, 2 M H2SO4, and 60? with 6 vol.% H2O2 addition were 97.9% Mn, 98.0% Zn and 55.2% Fe. The leach liquor was finally adjusted to the Mn:Zn:Fe mole ratio of 1:1:4 suitable for producing MnZnFe4O8 ferrite powder by the addition of Mn, Zn and Fe sulfates followed by pH control. A co-precipitation test for Mn-Zn ferrite powder was performed at 80?, O2 gas flowing at 1.3 L/min. As a result of co-precipitation, Mn-Zn ferrite nanoparticles in 20 nm size with spinel structure were successfully synthesized. The saturation magnetizations of Mn-Zn ferrite powder (Mn1-xZnxFe2O4) were determined to be 39-91 emu/g with various zinc contents (X=0.2-0.8).

Argentina's oil production continues in its upward trend. The year 1940 closed with an important increase over 1939; that is, 1,996,371 bbl., or 10.72 per cent. The Government oil fields (Y.P.F.) are responsible for these results, as their total output was 12,474,655 bbl., which compared with the 10,222, 533 bbl. produced in 1939 represent an increase of 2,252,122 bbl., or 22.03 per cent. Fields operated by private companies yielded 8,134,882 bbl., against 8,390,633 bbl. in 1939, a decrease of 255,751 bbl. (3.04 per cent). To the total of 20,609,538 bbl. produced in 1940 in Argentina, the Comodoro Rivadavia field contributed 14,976,222 bbl.; Plaza Huincul, 1,275,814 bbl.; the Province of Salta, 1,845,1977 bbl. and the Province of Mendoza, 2,51I,475 bbl. A growing demand within the minerals industry for sustainable development and the introduction of carbon taxes have resulted in a significant focus on improving the energy efficiency of comminution circuits. However, in this drive for improved energy efficiency the role of classification has been overlooked. Inefficient classification and large recirculating loads reduce circuit capacity, result in over-grinding and higher specific energy consumption.It is well understood that classification increases mill capacity; therefore, closed ball mill-cyclone circuits have become an industry standard. However, due to limitations in cyclone classification efficiency, the optimum recirculating load is limited to about 250 per cent. A simple relationship quantifying the effect of classification efficiency and recirculating load on grinding circuit capacity is presented in this paper. The possibility of improving the capacity of ball mill circuits by improving classification efficiency is discussed, considering the current practical limitations of classification equipment. Simulation tools were used to evaluate circuits with cyclones and with high frequency screens to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Various types of commercial ion exchange resins were evaluated with respect to their ability to extract gold from cyanide leach solutions. Large differences were found among the various resins in terms of selectivity and gold loading. The hydrophi­licity and the charge density appear to be the main factors that determine the resin characteristics. Polystyrene weak-base resins, such as Dowex MWA-1, exhibited the best all-round performance.

In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

"SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

"The purpose of this paper is to identify a number of currently available opportunities for exploration and/or mine development in the industrial minerals field in southeastern Ontario. The paper is not intended as a complete review of the industrial minerals industry in southeastern Ontario, but highlights what are seen by the authors as areas where there are immediate opportunities for investment and growth.Traditional exploration targets in the Grenville Supergroup in southeastern Ontario have been vein-hosted gold deposits, industrial minerals, and base metals. In recent years, emphasis has increasingly shifted to industrial minerals, in response to changing technologies in the minerals-consuming manufacturing industries, and to an increasing awareness of the industrial mineral potential in this area.This paper examines the resurgence of interest in exploring for and developing a wide variety of industrial minerals, and it examines the work the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines has done under the current Canada-Ontario Mineral Development Agreement. Specific development opportunities are identified in various commodity areas. Use oj the industrial minerals wollastonite and nepheline as substitutes for fluorspar in the formulation of synthetic steelmaking slags is also discussed."

Surface soil/spoil Samples (0-10 cm) from experimental test sites in western North Dakota were aseptically collected during August 1975 and each month (May through September) during 1076 and 1977. Selected samples were Cultured in a defined inorganic medium and after six weeks the algae were identified. Chlorophyll u content of the soil/spoil was used as a measure of the algal abundance. Soil physical-chemical properties, species variety and abundance were statistically analyzed. All test sites revealed distinct soil algal communities and demonstrated a successional trend as evidenced by significant increase, in species variety and bionmass over time. Some soil factors, calcium, copper, and phosphorus affected species variety and abundance at more than one situ. Others were important at specific sites; silicon and aluminum at the South Beulah test site; manganese sodium and zinc at the North Beulah test site No. 1 and boron, cadmium and magnesium at the North Beulah test site No. 2. Topsoiled areas had higher species varieties and abundances when compared with control areas, as did plots treated with amendments such as leonardite and fertilizer Generally.

There is a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR. Some of them are quite large ones. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos can be seen in the sketch map (fig. 1). Bazhenovo deposit situated in Sverdlovsk region is the largest of them. It is on mining operations since year 1889. Systematical studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the first years of Soviet Government and connected with the names of K.E. Tarasov, P. M. Tatarinov, B. J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F. V. Syromjatnikov, V. N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V. R. Artemov, V.F. Dybkov and many others. This investigations served the USSR to be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In the limits of the report a characteristic of the main asbestos deposits of the USSR may be done in general outline, from the point of view of their genesis, and in order to show their common features and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed of magnesium rock as a result of comparatively lower-grade temperature hydrothermal alteration and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalyst As a matter of fact an important mineral for industry is not chrysotile in general, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, but a long fibrous and mainly vein variety of chrysotile. It must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. A geologist should search for the mineral not only places of possible chrysotile generations, but places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers that could be fiberized well. The Soviet geologists distinguish two groups of chrysotile-asbestos deposits: (1) related to ultrabasic rocks and (2) related to sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account what the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits related to ultrabasite. The largest deposits in dolomite are small ones but their asbestos contains almost no iron. So much asbestos is a better filler into insulating plastics. There is a few types of asbestos deposits in the limits of the ultrabasic group. The largest of them is a Bazhenovo type which the deposits of Urals are attributed, and Bazhenovo deposits is the first instance. The Bazhenovo type is characterized by the most complete zonality in disposition of various kinds of asbestization. This type of deposits is practically the only one to be in working now in the USSR.
