"The use of cut-off-walls (COW) for the open pit coal mines has been used for decades. They have been used to reduce the negative hydraulic impact to the surrounding area caused by the open pit mining. The pile-guided trench cutting system is a worldwide unique technique, originally developed by the engineers of the mining companies themselves. It guarantees a continuous, joint free, COW during a continuous installation process. At this specific site in Welzow, this technique has been pushed to new limits in order to address the local lake region. Depth capability has been designed to about 430 ft (130m), proven are already depth of about 360 ft (110m) at a constant trench width of 39 inch (1000 mm). This project is approximately. 6.8 miles (11 km) long of COW, scheduled to be completed in 12 years period. About 2.05 miles (3.3km) have been installed, which is equivalent of about 3.5 Million ft² (330,000 m²). The system flushes special clay which forms a filter crust at the inner surface of the trench. Only natural clay resources used, in order to achieve the cut-off effect (colmation effect). The paper explains the installation process of the cut-off-wall as well as the equipment systems developed specifically for this project. After a successful start of the first phase of the project, the next step in the advancement of the equipment is already underway to enable the installation of greater depth to approximately 490 ft (150 m +) and beyond. The next generation equipment system is scheduled to start operation around 2018 INTRODUCTIONThis Serbian saying “Bóh je stworil Lužicu a cert je zaryl brunicu – God created Lusatia and the devil buried brown coal underneath it.” captures local communities’ ambivalence towards lignite.Lusatia is an almost entirely flat stretch of land between the Elbe and Neiße rivers dominated by glacial sands. On the surface, the heathland and woodland is hardly noteworthy. However, three large lignite mining regions, two in Brandenburg and one in Saxony, in the east part of Germany, divert the attention to underground level, down to depths of up to 120 meters. Here, seams crisscross the earth like ribbons. They were formed in the Tertiary around 17 million years ago.The mining of the lignite started almost 200 years ago. To enable open pit mining, a suitable dewatering system was required. At first, wells and drainage system were used. With the increasing demand to go deeper to enable full use of the existing resources with greater mining depth, a decision taken back in the 60th of the last century, the amount of water which had to be pumped increased dramatically. In peak times, approx. 1.57 Billion cubic yards per year (1.2 Billion m³/year) had to be pumped. This led to a lowering of the groundwater level for up to 230 ft (70 m), impacting the regional lake landscape. In order to reduce the influence on the water balance, and bring the water level back to pre1970th, a first development took place to implement the use of specific COW system to depth of about 147 ft (45m)."

The Bureau of Mines has studied the fracturing produced in the vicinity of large-diameter blastholes in Lithonia granite. Cores were taken from the vicinity of AN-FO production blasts and examined using a total of seven laboratory and field measurement techniques to delineate zones of damage and evaluate the effectiveness of the seven diagnostic tests for fracture-state determination. Laboratory measurements of acoustic pulse velocity, porosity, permeability, compressive strength, and Young's modulus indicated the extent of fracturing with the acoustic techniques providing the best means of distinguishing between fractured and unfractured core. A severely fractured zone was found to extend approximately 25 inches (64 cm) from the center of the 6-l/2-inch blastholes, equivalent to 8 blast-hole radii. A second zone, characterized by a lesser degree of fracturing extended from 25 to 45 inches (64 to 114 cm) or 8-to l4-blasthole radii. Beyond 45 inches (114 cm) the rock was undamaged.

Most hydrothermal gold deposits contain quartz with fluid inclusions that record composition and temperature of the mineralizing event. Quartz has strong chemical and mechanical resistances to weathering and abrasion. Hence, quartz fragments occurring on weathered surfaces or in till cover have the potential to be used for gold exploration as far as we know what is the signification of the volatile content of the fluid inclusions for gold mineralization. In this perspective, fluid inclusions were analyzed in pure quartz by solid-probe mass spectrometry from gold deposits hosted in the Archean Abitibi (Canada) and Paleoproterozoic Birimian (Western Africa) belts. This approach provides the relative abundance of volatiles from families of fluid inclusions decrepitating at specific temperatures (Td). Fluids in gold deposits are aqueous-dominated with CO2 and minor H2S in accordance with their fundamental role as gold-ligands (H2S) and for pH-buffering (CO2) of the gold-bisulfide solubility. However, there is no correlation between CO2 and H2S contents of fluid inclusions with the gold grade of the samples. This suggests that trapped fluids represent a marginal portion of the fluid history recorded by the veins. However, in barren quartz veins away from known mineralization CO2 or H2S are commonly absent. Wide ranges in H2O Td from 250 to 450°C and CO2-H2O Td offsets are common, indicating phase separation. The content of other volatiles seems to be more dependent on the geological setting. Helium content may suggest proximity to a crustal-rooted fault, a critical parameter for gold mineralization. Methane and especially C2H6 appear to be indicative of fluid buffering by organic-rich material such as graphitic-shale. These rocks may provide an important primary gold reservoir from sedimentary metal-rich pyrite. Nitrogen-bearing fluids may be related to a magmatic component but can also be derived from organic-rich sedimentary rocks. For gold exploration, quartz containing CO2- H2S-bearing fluid inclusions and having H2O-CO2-Td offsets within 250 - 450°C has strong vectoring potential.

"Abstract Large scale In Situ Barrier Wall Construction projects, specifically those related to earth dams, dikes, and levees, frequently require stringent quality control measures to ensure the success of the wall. This presentation discusses the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to capture information from multiple data streams and provide geotechnical feedback, quality control, and project control feedback. Techniques used to geospatially analyze verticality data from secant piles and panels will be demonstrated. Examples will be presented from barrier wall installations at two sites owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE): the Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky, and Center Hill Dam in Tennessee.IntroductionDeep foundation installations require contractors to collect a substantial amount of information over the course of a project, both for internal quality control of construction progress and for demonstrating compliance with customer or owner specifications. Methods of collecting information are constantly improving, bringing with it the need for a systemic approach to managing the increasing amounts and types of data. Handling these diverse types of data presents challenges with both budget and schedule demands. This paper discusses some techniques for adding or increasing quality control in barrier wall constructions by consolidating, visualizing and analyzing data using relational database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, collectively referred to as Information Management System (IMS) development. The IMS concept is designed to facilitate the collection, transfer and processing of data and provide an easy way to remotely access and visualize construction progress.The remainder of this paper presents the needs and objectives of an IMS applied to quality control in barrier wall construction, the components and data flows involved, the capabilities and user interfaces of the systems and the benefits for the end users. Examples are presented throughout from case study projects including: a pile barrier wall applied in the rehabilitation at the Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky (under contract to the Treviicos-Soletanche Joint Venture), and a secant pile barrier wall currently under construction in the rehabilitation of the Center Hill Dam in Tennessee (under contract to Bauer Foundations Corporation) (both owned by the Nashville District of the USACE)."

The purpose of this paper is to provide an illustration of the Resource Management Act processes at their best. Many of you will be aware of the Martha Mine situated in the middle of Waihi Township in Hauraki District. Underground mining ceased on Martha Hill in the 1950s. A new mining licence was issued in the late 1980s and since that date open cast mining has continued at the site. The Hauraki District Council notified its proposed plan in October 1994. Prior to that date numerous discussion papers and draft sections of the plan had been disseminated in the community. Considerable consultation was undertaken with all interest groups. As an indication of the success of that consultation process only 17 references to the Environment Court were lodged following the making of decisions on submissions and further submissions. Those references, which included a number from the Minerals Industry, were all resolved by consent. Out of the reference and consent order process EMMA (Extended Martha Mineral Area) was born.

When considering alternative equipment choices in mill or process flowsheets, it is important to determine both capital and operating costs of such equipment as well as other possible savings related to downstream operations. This paper presents a few case studies and shows cursory guidelines for the selection of equipment for new installations or in the retrofitting of existing plants. Based upon recent plant experience, suggestions are given to improve the operation of clarifiers, thickeners and vacuum filters.

The available supply of fuel and power is a subject of importance at all times and particularly at this time. The following brief survey of fuel and power in the United States appraises the extent of the several primary sources of energy the approximate monthly demand, 1929-40; the chief centers of production and consumption; and shifts in the principal uses from 1929 to recent years. The period covers the boom year 1929, the years of the great depression, the more normal year 1937, the recession in 1938, the year 1939, and 1940 (which was affected by armament programs). In some instances, the data for 1939 and 1940 are preliminary. The four primary sources of fuel and power are coal, petroleum, natural gas, and water power. Wood fuel, important in some regions, and foreign trade in natural gas and hydroelectricity represent a relatively small part of the energy supply and are not considered in this study. The tonnages shown are in terms of coal, based upon the calorific or B. t. u. equivalents of the several sources of power. In practice, the usable heat or energy varies according to the type of equipment available for its use. For example, the efficiency of turbine water wheels and internal-combustion engines is much higher than that of steam plants and household-heating devices.

It is a well-known fact that usage of reverse cationic flotation in magnetite ores processing enables to improve the quality of magnetite concentrates. We designed an iron ore concentrate technology (with 70 -71 % of iron) including reverse cationic flotation in pneumo-mechanical flotators RIF (developed by RIVS Corporation, Russia) with good biodegradable etheramines as collectors for flotation of quartz. Practical application of high biodegradable flotation reagents decreases environmental impact risk of objects and enterprises of mining industrial complex. This work presents results of development of flotation technology for production of high quality ferruginous concentrates from magnetite ores of Russia and Ukraine deposits. "Mining companies around the world are embracing geometallurgical modeling at a rapid rate, as senior executives realize that inputs must be properly measured if the output is to be managed effectively. Geometallurgical modeling is used to scientifically manage risk in project evaluation, for plant design and production forecasting, and optimization of production planning and mineral processing/metallurgical unit operations. The technology also provides a solid foundation for implementing broad corporate strategies with respect to intelligent asset utilization and metal sales. Over the past five years, MinnovEX Technologies Inc. has been actively engaged in developing, promoting and applying geometallurgical modeling technology for major mining companies around the world. This paper describes the methodology for successfully applying the technology for the unit operations of comminution and flotation in the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgical modeling (referred hereon as geomet modeling), in theory, can be applied to its full potential on all unit operations in mineral processing; however, this paper will concentrate on two of the largest unit operations, namely comminution and flotation, where the technology is actually being practiced by many large mining companies. For concept studies and prefeasibility studies, aspects of geometallurgical technology are regularly applied but in a less rigorous manner than for final feasibility studies where justification for funds is sought. This paper will focus on the final feasibility stage of a project and on existing operations or planned expansions, where the full power of geometallurgical technology is brought to bear in a cost effective manner.One of the unique aspects of geomet modeling, when used to its potential, is the ability to design plants, and forecast and plan production with a quantifiable degree of precision, something that was unattainable in the past. This means that when new comminution and flotation plants are designed, the mining companies and financial institutions involved in the project can measure the precision of the design and therefore better understand and manage project risk. It means that for existing and new operations, metal sales personnel can carry out their sales strategies with a much better understanding of the degree of error associated with production forecasts of concentrate/metal and quality of concentrates. For mine and mill managers, geomet modeling allows the effect of the mine plan on the downstream processes to be quantified; thereby allowing the mine plan to be recast in a more optimized manner. Finally, existing concentrator personnel can optimize their unit operations based on a more definitive understanding"

ON JULY 12, 1921, S. S. Arentz, representative at large from Nevada, introduced in the House of Representatives, under the number H. R. 7736, a bill to revise, amend and codify laws of the United States relating to the location of mining claims on public domain, and other purposes. This bill had been drafted by a committee of consulting engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The immediate purpose of this introduction in Congress was to make it avail- able for general information and discussion. In pursuance of this purpose Mr. Arentz issued the following circular: This proposed codification and revision of the mining laws of the United States as received from a committee of mining and metallurgical engineers appointed by the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines was introduced in the House of Representatives by the undersigned (who has operated and developed mines throughout the West for many years). It is submitted to prospectors, mine operators and mining engineers, all of whom are affected and vitally interested in the subject with the hope that they will give this bill their careful consideration and study.

On September 13, 1973 MAPCO Inc. leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation an 18,000 acre tract of coal lands in Eastern Kentucky's Martin County (See Figure 1.). In July, 1974 initial run of mine coal shipments commenced and in April, 1976 shipments of a 12,500 BTU, less than 1% sulphur, washed coal was being shipped. Results of exploration demonstrated that large quantities of overburden would have to be moved. MAPCO decided to invest in large surface mining equipment to tackle the job.

The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shafts (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons. ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

Although some mine hoisting systems incorporating steel wire ropes on drum hoists experience completely dependable performance on the hoist ropes for many years, other rope records illustrate an erratic behaviour pattern and, as such, become a source of concern to the operator. This paper describes the causes of the difficulties most commonly encountered and incorporates methods of providing preventative or corrective maintenance. When such a program is utilized wisely, within the allowable limits of shaft time available, it can be the means of avoiding many unforeseen circum-stances and of reducing operating costs, as well as rope costs, to a mini-mum.

Financing the acquisition of a going coal mine operation has not had the exposure other finance-oriented projects have had. Therefore, C.I.T. feels that coal mining people and financial people should improve their understanding of the factors involved in this important type of acquisition. The discussion consists of two major subjects: analysis of the acquisition of the property, and sources and terms of funding the acquisition. Source and Terms of Funding There is a need to keep the competent medium-sized independent operator in the coal business, especially in these times of energy shortage. The creation of a resale market for coal mines encourages new investment in the coal mining business by medium-sized operators and their financial backers. Who provides debt and equity financing to acquire going coal mine operations and on what terms?

Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. FROM time to time articles have appeared in the technical press on the interesting subject of surface combustion. The theoretical part of the problem has, for practical purposes, received ample consideration in those articles, but the number of practical applications of surface combustion referred to has generally been very small.It is the writer's object to review some recent developments in surface combustion, and also to try to arrive at an estimate of its advantages and possibilities. It is not necessary for this purpose to dilate upon the phenomenon of surface combustion itself. Many interesting things have been said on the subject by Pro£. W. A. Bone, of Leeds, to whose researches the recent developments are largely due. A few illustrations may make clear what is meant by surface combustion.Prof. Bone, in an experiment, took a platinum crucible, which he heated in the flame of a Meker-burner. Then he turned the gas off for a second, and, opening the stop-cock again, allowed the combustible mixture to impinge upon the crucible, thetemperature of which was still well below the ignition temperature of the gas. Although no flame was visible at this stage, it was soon clear that, nevertheless, the gas and air had continued to combine, as the crucible would attain a red heat after a few seconds.Another instance of surface combustion was shown by a Mr. Fletcher, in 1882. He placed an iron ball, weighing 3 lb., on a slab of fireclay, heated it for a few seconds with a blow-pipe, and blew the flame out, leaving the gas-mixture still...

"The reactivity of an enargite mineral electrode was investigated spectroelectrochemically under conditions typically found in alkaline sulfide leach solutions, with pH 11-13 and Na2S additions of 50 and 250 gL-1. A bulk enargite electrode was cycled between 0 and -1,000 mV for each set of solution conditions. Raman spectroscopy was used to determine and compare surface formations against species in mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams generated using STABCAL. Previously, it was determined that arsenic could be selectively leached under alkaline conditions at an average solution potential of -300mV, across the pH range 11-13. Operating under such conditions allowed for the selective leaching of arsenic with elemental sulfur formation. From several of the voltammograms obtained during this current testing, the formation of elemental sulfur appeared at increasingly reducing conditions with increasing sulfide concentration. At high concentrations, copper started to dissolve, possibly as a bisulfide complex, reducing the selectivity of the leach, unlike previous studies. However, the presence of the higher sulfide concentration is also anticipated to prevent passivation by consuming any surface formation of elemental sulfur. This study provides insight into the operating parameters of alkaline sulfide leaching in regards to the selectivity of arsenic leaching, as well as guidance for control of reagents and solution potential and, of course, the need for water treatment afterwards.IntroductionEnvironmental limitations on the pyrometallurgical processing of arsenic-bearing concentrates have forced operations to consider other solutions. Attempts to hydrometallurgically process enargite (Cu3AsS4) fall into two categories: the co-dissolution of arsenic and copper under acidic conditions, and the selective leaching of arsenic under basic conditions. The authors believe that the selective leaching of arsenic is more amenable because it produces a solid copper phase, preferably chalcocite (Cu2S) or covellite (CuS) that could then be processed using conventional methods already in place in the copper and gold industries. Potential leaching methods include alkaline sulfide leaching (Achimovicovica et al., 1999; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008a,b; Tongamp et al., 2009 and 2010), hypochlorite leaching (Vinals et al., 2003; Curreli et al., 2005; Mihaljovic et al., 2007), ammoniacal leaching (Gajam and Raghavan, 1983), and acid leaching (Gow et al., 2014b) with or without fine grinding to mechanically activate the enargite surface and increase normally slow leach reaction kinetics (Achimovicova et al., 1999; Balaz et al., 2000; Balaz and Achimovicova, 2006). Gearless mill drives (GMDs) are the workhorse in the mineral processing industries, more specifically when it comes to grinding crushed ore and cement (in various production stages) in semiautogenous (SAG) mills and large ball mills. They are renowned for their excellent reliability and robustness, long lifespan, and little need for maintenance, and thus yield a low total cost of ownership (TCO). A GMD represents a major investment for a mineral processing plant, and its availability is pivotal for the grinding process. As a basic rule, shut-down periods are to be minimized, but even much more important is that unscheduled shut-downs be avoided. In this contribution, we will present a portfolio of innovative remote diagnostic that consist of the following three key components: 1. Trouble shooting is a form of corrective maintenance and is based on state-of-the art remote access technology, thus enabling highly skilled engineers to access the current sensor readings anytime and from anywhere in order to resolve urgent problems together with the GMD user. 2. Periodic maintenance reports are a form of preventive and predictive maintenance and aim at continuous improvement based on long-term historical records and analyses of multiple measured signals. These detailed reports highlight the health and operational status of the GMD and are periodically (e.g. 3 months) submitted to the customer. 3. Remote condition monitoring spans across preventive and predictive maintenance and is based on continuous recording and automatic analyses of relevant signals using advanced algorithms. The main issue is how to handle the enormous flood of data in an intelligent manner. The results of these analyses are made available to both the GMD user and supplier in real time in order to increase the availability and reliability of the GMD. In this paper, we consider various parts of the GMD, e.g. the cycloconverter, the ring motor, the auxiliary devices (e.g. cooling and lubrication systems), and also phenomena related to the mill itself (e.g. state and quantity of charge). The signal analysis techniques range from simple threshold-based analyses to complex time and frequency domain analyses. We will illustrate the benefits of the proposed approaches with some selected examples.

"Treatment of oxide, e.g. roasted gold ores has received relatively less attention than sulphidic ones and recently, handling of oxide gold ores is becoming essential. In this study, the influence of roasted gold ore (RGO) slurry (at 35% solid ratio) on the electrochemical dissolution of gold has been examined using pure gold and iron oxide minerals (hematite, maghemite, and magnetite) as disc electrodes by zeroresistance ammeter mode either in one or two separate containers. The presence of slurry decreased galvanic currents, i.e. corrosion rates due to the release and increase in the amount of soluble and/or insoluble species that could retard further the anodic behaviour of gold. Higher galvanic currents were observed in two separate containers than that in one container indicating the primary importance of galvanic interactions. SEM-EDS results observed iron hydro/oxide coatings on gold surface in case of magnetite test. However, in case of RGO electrode it is not a perfect passivation, although somewhat decreasing trend was observed on gold dissolution. These findings have revealed that passivation is not only a laboratory phenomenon, but also it could be responsible for the slowdown of gold dissolution in industrial practice.INTRODUCTIONThe cyanidation of gold is an electrochemical corrosion process thus; the dissolution of gold can readily be studied by electrochemical techniques. The outcome/summary of previous electrochemical studies of gold leaching can partially be summarized as follows: Filmer (1982) and Lorenzen and van Deventer (1992) reported the negative effect of pyrite and pyrrhotite on gold leaching due to the galvanic interactions; Aghamirian and Yen (2005) studied gold galvanic corrosion in presence of sulphide mineral electrodes only in one cell using zero-resistance ammeter (ZRA) mode; Dai and Jeffrey (2006) discussed, individually, the anodic and cathodic behaviours between gold and sulphide minerals, and Azizi et al. (2010, 2011) used a bed reactor to examine the influence of sulphide minerals on gold dissolution in one and two separate cells. Accordingly, a slowdown in gold leaching has generally been attributed to the passivation phenomenon, although the indication of this phenomenon is still an undergoing debate. For instance, Mrkusic and Paynter (1970) identified the passivation as the film formation of dissolved species from calcine, Crundwell (2014) explained passivation, in the case of corrosion of metals, as the formation of a layer which is composed of a new chemical species on the mineral surface and this layer inhibits or blocks further reactions. He suggested that passivation is related to the oxidation of the metal, and the formation of a passive layer that retards the rate of dissolution by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, galvanic interactions, passivation phenomena, or combinations of them are considered significant electrochemical factors affecting gold dissolution (van Deventer, Reuter, Lorenzen, & Hoff, 1990; Azizi, Petre, & Larachi, 2012). It is important to note that generalizing the influence of a mineral/metal on gold dissolution may not be correct in all cases, since contrary behaviours/results (for pyrite) have been observed (Aghamirian & Yen, 2005). Therefore, electrochemical study of gold is still a subject of research and need to be examined further in detail."
