Water spray applications are one of the principal means of controlling airborne respirable dust in coal mines. Since many coals are hydrophobic and not easily wetted by water, wetting agents can be added to the spray water in an effort to improve coal wetting and assist with dust capture. In order to study wetting agent effects on coal dust capture, laboratory experiments were conducted with three wetting agents used by the coal industry on -325 mesh sized Pocahontas No. 3 coal dust. Significant differences in coal dust sinktimes were observed among the three wetting agents at water mixture concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%. The best wetting agent as identified by the coal dust sink test was only tested at the lowest 0.05% water mixture concentration and was found to have a negligible effect on spray airborne dust capture. Water spray airborne dust capture results for all three wetting agents tested at a 0.2% water mixture concentration showed that all three wetting agents exhibit similar but small improvements in dust capture efficiency as compared with water. These results indicate that the coal dust sink test may not be a good predictor for the capture of airborne dust. Additional research is needed to examine if the coal dust sink test is a better predictor of wetting agent dust suppression effects during cutting, loading, conveying, and dumping of coal products by comparison to airborne dust capture from sprays.

La unidad de producción de Cerro de Pasco, perteneciente a la Compañía minera del Centro del Perú, cuenta con importantes reservas de minerales piríticos argentíferos que son tratados en la planta concentradora de San Expedito. Dicho concentrado es usualmente empleado como funderte en el circuito de cobre de la fundición de La Oroya. Sin embargo, dada la finura del material, su porcentaje se ha visto reducido. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala una alternativa para recuperar la plata contenida en el concentrado mineral a través de un análisis mineralógico del concentrado pirítico. Posteriormente, se describe el proceso combinado piro-hidrometalúrgico que consiste en la tostación-lixiviación, precipitación con polvo de zinc y la refinación hidrometalúrgica. Finalmente como apoyo a la técnica señalada, se agrega el análisis económico para Centromin.

In the construction industry, project changes constitute a major cause of delay, disruption, cost increases, poor quality and unsatisfying performance. They are also known as a main factor of litigation between the owners and constructors. Construction projects are essentially process-based, and with the critical role of Information Technology (IT) in this industry, projects, especially mega projects, are being managed remotely. The volume of data and documents, such as Requests For Information (RFIs), different types of Change Requests (CRs) and Project Change Notices (PCNs), being transferred and exchanged amongst the stakeholders of a project is considerable. The circulation of these documents amongst project stakeholders still heavily relies on two methods or levels for management of change process; Conventional (fully paper-based, Faxes, Snail mails) and Electronic or semi-automated (Email, Internet, PDF files). These two methods are dependent on human discipline to follow specified processes which often break down because of human nature. This creates serious compliance problems. It is hypothesized here that fully that automated process-based management of change can lead to better compliance, more efficient management of change, and reduction of time and cost of data exchange. An approach of doing this is presented in this paper. Ultimately, its impact should improve project performance. Conclusions are presented on time savings and improved compliance.

Empirical models used for predicting the performance of screens on the basis of capacity, cut size, water split and grade efficiency curves were evaluated. This paper reports experimental results obtained with single-deck Derrick screens. The performance of the screen was tested with limestone in a separate screen set-up, in a pilot plant and in industrial scale test runs. The results of pilot plant experiments showed that the measured water split was higher than the measured bypass. This is an indication to that water flow does not entrain the same proportion of all fine particles present in the feed which is advantageous for screening. The experimental design for the industrial test runs was made on the basis of the pilot plant tests. Suitability of the existing models has been checked and accuracy compared. The tests showed that best grade efficiency model was the Rosin-Rammler model. An empirical model for the evaluation of the model parameters as a function of pulp density of the feed and the load of the screen is suggested.

DISCOVERY of a commercial ore deposit has resulted from a program emphasizing geophysical techniques and concentrating upon exploration of alluvial-covered areas. United Geophysical Co. selected these areas as offering the best possibility of success, for here the surface evidence of ore deposits has been hidden from the eyes of prospector and geologist alike. Pima mining district, Pima County, Arizona, was selected for initial exploration. The project was successful in that a commercial ore deposit was discovered and proved through drilling and extensive underground development.

Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes. Water is routed to the roof bolter from the main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3. The silica content of the roof material was high, ranging from 28.9% to 52.7% during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60%when cleaning the collector boxes. INTRODUCTION Currently, the dry vacuum dust collection system is the standard dust collector on roof bolters in underground coal mining. It has been proven to be an effective dust control to prevent roof bolter operators’ overexposure to coal mine respirable silica dust during roof bolting operations [Potts eta l, 2011 and Colinet, 2013]. The dry collection system works as follows: drill cuttings are vacuumed into the precleaner. The precleaner dumps oversized material onto the mine floor while undersized material enters the dust box via vacuum airflow produced by a blower. The cuttings entering the dust box are either deposited on the floor of the dust box or into a dust collector bag. The vacuum airflow leaves the dust box through a final filter which removes any small particles from the airflow. Figure 1 shows the internal view of two dry collection system boxes; one that does not use the dust collector bags and another that uses the dust collector bags. Dust collectors that use dust collector bags to contain material inside the dust collector box have been shown to provide better protection to roof bolter operators than dust collectors that do not use the bags [Listak and Beck 2008]. The dry collectors are very efficient at reducing respirable coal mine dust exposure from roof bolting activities. Recently, Blue Mountain Energy’s Deserado underground coal mining operation, outside Rangely, CO, made a modification to the dry collector system to convert it to a wet collector system with a unique exception from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for testing purposes. The wet collector system still uses a vacuum system to pull material from the vertical roof bolt hole, but incorporates a water spray nozzle located inside the dust box to wet the incoming material. The flow through the nozzle ranges from 1.9–7.6 lpm (0.5–2.0 gpm) at 0.69 MPa (100 psi). The conversion to the wet collector system removes the precleaner and the cyclones inside the dust box. The wet material (sludge) then empties through a specialized valve in the bottom of the box. The final filter is still used to prevent respirable dust from leaving the dust box through the exhaust. During operation, the wet collector dust box is opened and hosed clean after roof bolting every place. After every two entries the final filter is changed out. Figure 2 shows the inside of the wet collector box.

Many technical processes also yield dusty residues which usually contain appreciable amounts of valuable matter. Often they also accumulate substances detrimental to the process. Dumping them entirely in landfills wastes raw material and causes high disposal costs, but recycling them without prior treatment is often not feasible. Physical separation processes are preferable because of their rather low energy demand. In order to develop such treatment systematically, the residues must be characterized properly. The technique for such a characterization is taken from mineral processing: perfect fractionation according to continuous properties of the particles supplemented with chemical analysis are used for plotting the Henry-Reinhardt chart. This represents the benchmark for assessing actual separation processes and tests. Their results are compared in terms of ?selectivity? and plotted in the kappa chart. In this paper, Henry-Reinhardt chart and kappa chart are applied to several different types of residues from iron and steel production and show their potential for being upgraded before reutilization in the production process. "There is a wide choice of different types of woven filter media for hundreds of different filtration applications. Factors such as type of fiber, synthetic polymers used, weave style, fabric finishes and fabrication techniques all play an important part in selecting the best choice for a specific type of filter and process application. The purpose of this paper is to offer some basic knowledge of these factors and how they can impact the performance of a filter, the life of the media and the overall cost of operation through case studies of actual plant filtration applications.IntroductionThe use of woven filter cloth in liquid/solid separation applications is generally well known. Woven filter cloth, by the nature of the weaving process, offers unique consistency and repeatability when compared to some other filter media such as needled felts, papers, sintered structures and knitted cloth. This unique consistency and repeatability is particularly applicable to woven filter cloth produced using monofilament fibers. These fibers are consistent in shape and form the basis for a woven cloth with predictable pore size and throughput characteristics. Woven filter cloth can be used in most wet filtration applications. Typical examples are the separation of chemical and pharmaceutical solids from process liquors, waste stream solids capture, liquid foods clarification, mining separations, and polymer filtration.EnvironmentOne of the first considerations is the environmental demand of the given process. Though it is tempting to look immediately at the particles in a filtration process, it is often better to consider some of the more basic needs of the system. There are numerous materials available, both synthetic and wire cloth. Each has its own unique set of properties."

This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

"INTRODUCTION Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, upper Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that process a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 66 miles to the Humboldt mill where both nickel and copper concentrates are produced. Operations began in 2014 and continued with an average production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year for the first three years of operation. The Humboldt Mill, currently operated by Lundin Mining, processes the nickel/copper ore from Eagle Mine and performs the concentration through several stages of flotation. Originally built in 1954, the Humboldt Mill began operations as an Iron Ore processing facility, and was converted to a gold processing plant during the 1980s. Various groups owned the site after closure of the gold operation. Eagle purchased the Mill in 2008 and invested more than $280 million to clean up historic mine waste and refurbish the plant (see flowsheet in APPENDIX). This paper will overview the ramp-up of the operation, and discuss some specific areas that went well and some that could have gone better during the design phase. HIGH LEVEL DESIGN CRITERIA Coarse ore arrives from the mine and is stored in a building with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Ore is crushed in three stages to a final product size of 100% Passing 12mm. Crushed ore is conveyed to the mass flow fine ore bins, which have a live capacity of 3000 tonnes. Crushed ore is fed to two parallel 900 HP ball mills, charged with 3” high chrome grinding media, and ground, in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to a p80 of 110 microns in the flotation feed. Soda ash is added to the mills based on process water hardness. Cyclone overflow passes to the bulk conditioner where Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) are added. The slurry is pumped to the rougher bank for bulk flotation. Rougher concentrate is fed to a 500HP vertically stirred regrind mill and is ground to a p80 of 50 microns, using 5/8” high chrome balls. Rougher tailings report to the tailings thickener. The regrind cyclone overflow is sent to the single stage cleaner bank followed by two scavenger banks. The cleaner concentrate is pumped to the copper-nickel separation circuit. Cleaner tailings report to the tailings thickener. In the copper-nickel separation circuit, the pH is raised to 11.5 and a copper concentrate is recovered from the bulk cleaner concentrate in two stages, namely the copper roughers and the copper cleaner columns. The concentrate from the copper flotation columns is the final copper concentrate. The tailings from the columns return to the head of the copper-nickel separation. The nickel concentrate is the copper rougher tailings stream."

"Large-diameter ball mills have traditionally used steel liners—steel being a highly durable material that can be shaped into any desired geometry, among which the double-wave has been the preferred design. Such a design produces a purely cascading charge motion, which is ideal for the shearing action needed to produce a finer product. Today, however, rubber liners, which have been in existence for over forty years, are now preferred over traditional steel, largely because they weigh less and are easier to maintain. In this paper, we show the operating data from the Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia Mine, wherein the liners on a 26-by-40-foot mill were changed from conventional steel liners to PolyStl™ liners. It is then shown that this change reduced the amount of energy consumed whilst being able to maintain previous grind and throughput levels. The design is verified via discrete element simulations.IntroductionThe Constancia Mine (“Our Business: Peru,” 2016) is located in the southeastern Andes of Peru, at an elevation of approximately 4,200 m. It can be accessed via the CU-126 road, about 95 km from the town of Espinar in Espinar Province. The mine also contains both the Constancia and Pampacancha deposits in the Province of Chumbivilcas. Hudbay Minerals, Inc. acquired the mine in 2011, through the purchase of Norsemont Mining, Inc. and currently retains sole ownership of the property. Production of the Constancia Mine began in 2014, with commercial production levels being achieved in April 2015.The Constancia and Pampacancha deposits primarily include hypogene, supergene, and skarn ores. The Mine’s main products, however, are copper concentrate, with silver contents, and molybdenum concentrate. These mineral reserves are expected to last approximately 22 years. Constancia’s open-pit mine supplies a processing plant that is designed for 81,900 metric tons per day of throughput. Average annual copper production is estimated to be 82,000 mT (contained metal in concentrate). Actual plant production can be found in Table 1."

"The adsorption of collector on chalcocite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. The result clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. AFM images also showed that increasing solution pH to 10 doesn’t prevent the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite much and the result confirms with the fact that chalcocite floats well in a wide pH range up to 12 with xanthate being used as a collector. INTRODUCTION In flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying metal recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) The adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite surface in aqueous solution also attracted the interest of many researches. Gaudin and his colleagues (Gaudin et al., 1934; Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936) studied the solubility of potassium ethyl xanthate and its reaction products in organic solvents and firstly proposed there was initially chemisorbed xanthate (X-) on chalcocite surface followed by insoluble cuprous xanthate (CuX). Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of chalcocite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on chalcocite was cuprous xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Richardson et al. (1984) carried out an electrochemical study of chalcocite flotation with the addition of ethyl xanthate. It was proposed that cuprous xanthate and possibly cupric xanthate were adsorbed hydrophobic species on chalcocite surface due to the exchange and charge transfer oxidation reactions. Leppinen et al. (1989) applied an in-situ FTIR study of ethyl xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals under conditions of controlled potential and they concluded that, for chalcocite, there were three different potential regions of xanthate adsorption, including chemisorption, copper ethyl xanthate formation on the surface and multilayer formation."

"A concentration change during grade transition operation in steel thin slab casting is predicted with computer simulation, water model and plant trial. Fluid flow and mixing patterns in various tundish levels and flow rates were analyzed through three-dimensional mathematical modeling. Comparing with water model experiments, a simple, efficient and accurate computational model has been suggested to predict the concentration profile at outlet of tundish. Based on the model, mixing in/below the mold was analyzed considering EMBR. The predicted concentration profiles show good agreements with the measured values. It is found that the lower vortices in the mold are suppressed by the electromagnetic field and the plug-like flow region develops which decreases the intermixing of two different grades of steel and shortens the length of transition region.1. IntroductionContinuous casting is the primary mode of production of semifinished steel products as it offers tremendous advantages in terms of energy savings, increased yield and higher productivity over the traditional ingot casting process. Efforts have to be made constantly to improve the quality of the cast product, reduce costs and thus increase the competitiveness of the steel manufacturer. One way of reducing costs is to reduce the amount of intermixed steel during the grade transition operation.Several different procedures exist to handle the casting of dissimilar grades for the conventional slab casting. Each procedure has its own merits and demerits. In order to choose the best method for a particular operation, there are a lot of researches. In the case of present continuous thin slab casting of POSCO mini mill, the only possible method is to change ladle during the grade transition. Due to the high casting speed (3.8m/min-4.4m/min) it is impossible to change the tundish and due to the thin thickness of slab it is also impossible to insert grade separator."

The Porgera gold mine has made significant progress with the successful installation of a JK FrothCam image analysis system. The system is used to measure and control froth velocity on the scavenger circuit which has brought significant economical and operational benefits. The froth velocity signal, determined by analysis of the camera, is transmitted to the PLC that manipulates flotation cell airflow rate and cell level controllers to maintain a target froth velocity of 130 mm per second. Following on from a three-week trial installation in June 2000, a permanent installation was commissioned on the scavenger Outokumpu (OK150) tank cells. Further work is in progress on the rougher Wemco cells. This paper describes the evaluation of FrothCam Technology and its subsequent installation.

MANY studies of comminution have been made to ascertain the size distribution of the product and to evaluate the work of comminution in the light of the size distributions of the feed and product. Up to now, these studies have been essentially statistical in character, that is, a certain lot of feed was subjected to comminution in some specified way, and the aggregate product was fractionated into sizes, thereby losing all knowledge of individual relationship of feed to product pieces. Radioactive tracers offer a means to do something in this respect which could not be done before, namely, to follow the rupturing of some particular piece in its normal environment of other pieces. That is, it permits going beyond the usual statistical limitations of size distribution studies to what may be termed a personalized or individualized study. The purpose of this paper is to present some preliminary experiments conducted with this tool. The method employed was to mark radioactively some constituent of a feed. It is possible, of course, to consider the preparation of two lots of material of which one is radioactive and the other is not, and to blend the two ahead of the comminuting step; but to do so is open to the objection that the two preparations may not be identical. Therefore a technique has been chosen that removes this objection by merely taking out a size fraction of a comminution feed, rendering that fraction radioactive by exposure to a neutron flux, and then by returning it to Table I. A relatively simple procedure was developed by which albite, containing sodium, was activated in the M.I.T. cyclotron. The cyclotron makes highspeed deuterons which impinge on a beryllium target, thereby producing a concentrated neutron flux. The mineral was exposed to this flux for 2 hr. This treatment changed enough of the sodium to sodium 24 (14.8 hr half-life, 1.4 mev ß) as to make detection and measurement easy. The nuclear reactions taking place were: 11Na23 (n,?) 11Na24 (irradiation) 11Na24 ß,?,? 12Mg24 (decay) The detailed technique of the experimentation was as follows: 40 kg of hand-sorted, lump albite were crushed to pass 10 mesh. After careful mixing of the lot, a screen analysis was made. The whole lot of material was fractionated on standard Tyler screens from 14 down to 200 mesh. Samples for experiments were compounded from these fractions in accordance with the screen analysis. When it was desired to make an experiment in which, for example, the 28/35 mesh size fraction was to be studied, the blend of size fractions was made as indicated above, except that the 28/35 mesh size fraction was added only after irradiation in the cyclotron. The blended charge containing the activated albite was ground for 2 min in a laboratory ball mill with a steel ball charge of controlled size distribution. The ground product was carefully sized on a set of Tyler screens in a Ro-tap. Each size was analyzed for radioactivity by the use of an end-window Geiger-Mueller counter and standard scaling circuit. This analysis was carried out in detail as follows: a 20-g sample was placed in a Petri dish, packed carefully to obtain reproducible geometric distribution with reference to the Geiger-Mueller tube, and the activity was counted for a 2-min period. Several determinations of the activity of the active size fraction in the feed were made at various times to establish the decay in activity with time. Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

Everyone in the coal industry from top management to the preparation engineer is vitally interterested in recovering as much salable coal as possible from the run-of-mine product. Coal losses from a preparation plant occur in the solid refuse material being discharged from the plant and in the bleed-off slurry from the water circuit. The refuse is generally hauled from the plant in solid form by trucks, conveyors, or aerial trams to the refuse or culm banks or it may be crushed and transported by hydraulic methods to refuse ponds or dams. The loss of coal in refuse material and the extent of this problem has been covered in another paver.' The loss of salable coal in the plant bleed-off slurry is one of the water circuit problems in coal preparation plants. Slurries originate at various places in the processing circuits and are usually disposed of by transportation to waste ponds known as slurry ponds. Even though the combustible material discharged as slurry and refuse from the plant is labeled a loss, the loss must only be considered temporary. There is a tendency at the present time to examine refuse and slurry losses and to reprocess these materials to recover valuable coal. Slurries from eight bituminous coal preparation plants in central and western Pennsylvania have been sampled and examined to determine the amount of recoverable coal in each. Examinations of the samples were made to determine the tons per hour of solids and the gallons per minute of water in the slurry; the size, ash, and sulfur analyses of the solids; and the sink-float characteristics of the larger solids. The extreme fines (—325 mesh material) from one of the samples has been examined further to determine the micron size fractions as well as the ash and sulfur content of the micron sizes. Collection of the Samples: Field trips were made to each of the plants where samples were obtained and discussions held with the preparation engineer prior to sampling. The flowsheet of the plant operation was studied and a time-period selected to obtain a representative sample. At least 20 1-gal samples of total plant bleed-off suspensions were collected at each plant in increments over designated periods belived to be typical of the plant flow Three of the samples were obtained from plants in the Pittsburgh area. Each plant supplied information on the capacity, operating time, type of cleaning equipment used, water and material balances, and auxiliary equipment. From the time required to collect given amounts of slurry and from the amount of solids in the slurry, total solids discharges from the plant were calculated and compared with the plant flow. Ash and sulfur analyses of the total solids were also checked, at some plants, with company figures. In all cases where checks could be made there was reasonable agreement between company figures and those reported here. Analysis of the Slurries: Representative fractions of properly agitated samples were examined in the laboratory to determine the specific gravities of the slurries. The solids and water were separated by filtration to check the weight of each so that the percent of solids in the pulp could be determined. From the resulting data, presented in Table I, it may be seen that the percent solids in the slurries ranges from 2.8 to 39.0 and the amount of solids from 2.61 to 45.61 tph. Size Analysis of Solids: Representative fractions of the slurries were permitted to settle and the clear water was removed by siphoning. The solids were then wet-screened at 28, 35, 48, 65, 100, 150, 200 and 325 mesh. Results of the size analyses are presented in Table 11. These results indicate the extreme variation of sizes and in most cases the degree of fineness of the solids. The amount of —325 mesh ranges from 22.5 to 84.5 pct and the amount of+200 mesh from 8.3 to 69.1 pct.

Humid tropical environments pose many problems for mineral exploration. The problems result from thick lateritic soils, dense vegetation, seasonally heavy rains, deep chemical weathering, few outcrops and thick saprolites. Although geochemical exploration should be potentially a useful technique in these environments, it appears from the scarcity of reports in the literature that insufficient attention has been paid to developing procedures that are specific to the needs of humid tropical areas. For this reason, the authors believe that this account of a geochemical study in a tropical coastal area on the edge of the Brazilian shield is of general interest and importance for potential geochemical exploration surveys in similar areas within the tropics. The objective of the geochemical study was to develop a practical technique of reconnaissance geochemical prospecting for copper deposits in Brazilian tropical coastal lowland areas. In order to achieve this objective, information concerning the secondary dispersion of copper in these areas was required. Consequently, an orientation survey was designed to provide this information. The present account contains details of the geochemical study and the information about the secondary dispersion of copper that was acquired during the course of the orientation survey. Location and Climate The field area is on the Atlantic coastal lowland of Brazil at latitude 13°S. It lies approximately 10 kilometers south of Maragojipe, a city of 15,000 inhabitants; this city is on the western side of the Bay de Todos os Santos about 45 airline kilo¬meters northwest of Salvador. (See Fig. 1) A good gravel road from Sao Felipe to Sao Roque do Paraguay crosses the southern part of the field area. The climate of the area is hot and moist, and is without prolonged dry periods. The mean annual rainfall is about 1600 mm (63 in.) and the greatest precipitation occurs during the winter months of May and June and the summer months of December

The following description of methods for conducting gas-producer tests is probably the first attempt to give the subject an analytical, thorough and comprehensive treatment. In some cases where tests have been made, the methods have been so unsystematic and ambiguous that it has been impossible to secure comparable results. To eliminate this difficulty, the following provisional code of gas-producer tests— which has some resemblance to the code of boiler-trials of the American Society of MechanicalEngineers—has been developed. The primary object in testing a gas-producer is to determine whether the producer is working satisfactorily or, what is the same thing, to see if the efficiency is as high as it should be with the type of producer in question; and also to find out if the composition of the resulting gas is adapted to the work it has to do. In order that the test shall be of any value, it must be thorough and comprehensive, and must be conducted with skill and care. When so conducted, the test will reveal the economy of the'producer; and, by making suitable changes, the efficiency will often be increased very much. As a result of the tests made by Jenkins,' the efficiency was raised from 56.2
