Scorodite is considered as a secondary mineral formed from the product of weathering of primary minerals by chemical or biological reactions. In the case of biological scorodite formation, microorganisms mimic and accelerate what in nature takes a very long time, i.e. biocrystallisation. The goal of the biological scorodite formation is to form very stable arsenic crystals suitable for long-term and safe disposal. The biological formation of scorodite is a novel combination of biological oxidation, biocrystallisation, and proper bioreactor design to achieve the biological formation of scorodite crystals in one step. We have explored simultaneous biological arsenic and iron oxidation at 30ºC and at 70ºC leading to arsenic-jarosite phases and scorodite, respectively. As biologically formed scorodite crystals are very stable (TCLP < 1 mg/L As (V)), the risk of arsenic toxicity is minimized when leaching takes place. This process is suitable for arsenic concentrations above 0.5 g/l As achieving up to 20 mg/l As in the effluent. This biological scorodite formation system is a selfsufficient bio-oxidation system and therefore many new applications can be explored such as reprocessing of arsenic trioxide, orpiment or calcium arsenate to scorodite crystals for a stable and safe disposal.

Phase III and Phase IV of the Beaver Creek Clean River Project, Albany, NY, includes microtunnel construction of 2,320 feet of 48-inch/36-inch internal diameter (ID) conveyance pipe and a 525 foot long 9.5-ft horseshoe shape roadheader excavated tunnel. Notable challenges were encountered during the construction including mixed face tunnel conditions, undocumented existing fill ground conditions that resulted in settlement during shaft construction, and unstable tunnel face conditions. This paper discusses several of the key challenges encountered during construction and selected solutions to construction sequencing and methodology to successfully complete Phase III and Phase IV of the Beaver Creek Clean River Project.

Several foaming aluminum samples of different density were prepared in a semi-industrial scale experimental system. Their properties such as the energy absorption characteristics, mechanical properties, heat conductivity and acoustical properties were measured. The results showed that the foaming aluminum with a density of 0.5 to 0.6 g/cm3 has the best energy absorption and this makes it suitable as the ensuring bar of the automobiles and also as a cushion material for the engine. The foaming aluminum with a density of 0.25 to 0.4 g/cm3 has the best acoustical properties and heat conductivity resistance, which is suitable for the door filling material, the ceiling and the partition of the car engine.

Paper presented at the conference: Risk assessment in the extractive industries, held in Exeter, UK, 23-24 March 1994, and first published London: IMM, 1994, preprint volume, 20pp., 31 refs. Estimates of coal tonnage on UK open cast mining sites often vary from the recoverable tonnage. This is because the estimates depend on the geological variability of the coal measures. Geological parameters, such as thickness, quality and disturbance of the seam, have a direct control upon this variance. Risk analysis techniques have been applied using commercially available software to combine each parameter's variability into a cumulative variance, resulting in a tonnage distribution. Sensitivity modelling has also been used to identify the geological parameters which have the largest influence on the variance of the simulated tonnage distribution. An understanding of the relationship between the tonnage and geological variability has helped to focus exploration more efficiently. A cost to risk relationship can now be monitored, helping management to avoid negative consequences on site

The basic mining law of Netherland India is contained in N. I. Statute 1899 , No. 214 , as amended by N. I. Statute 1910 , No. 588 , and 1919 , No. 4 , which is quoted as the " Indian Mining Law, " the effective date of which was fixed as May 8 , 1907 , by proclamation dated October 12 , 1906. The Indian Mining Law was supplemented by Ordinance No. 38 , of 1930 , which was passed by the Volksraad on March 18 , 1930 , to become effective on October 1 , 1930 ( superseding an earlier ordinance entitled " Government Gazette , " 1906 , No. 434) . An important law with respect to American petroleum rights , Statute No. 23 , passed February 9 , 1928 , approving contracts between the Indian Government and the Netherland subsidiary of a large American oil company , is in the nature of a private law or of an enabling act ( see section of this paper entitled " Rights of Foreigners" ) . Statute 1930 , No. 348 , effective October 1 , 1930 , sets forth in minute detail conditions under which prospecting and mining permits may be granted. Statute 1930 , No. 341 , effective October 1 , 1930 , embodies the police regulations of the mining industry.

Physically absurd, triple-valued saturations appear in the straight-forward solution of the Buckley-Leverell equations for the displacement of oil by water or gas. From an engineering viewpoint, the triple value causen no difficulty. It is well known how it may be compensnted in order to obtain physically meaningful, numerical results. From a scientific viewpoint, the question still arises: What did the triple value mean? This paper explains how and why the triple value arose in non-capillary Buckley-Leverett theory. The discussion should serve as a background for the understanding and use of the modern method of characteristics in di.~pkzc(>ment theory. INTRODUCTION Displacement theory was introduced to petroleum technologists in 1 941 by Buckley and Leverett.&apos; Their first equation, which they wrote down without derivation, was equivalent to the following: ?s/?t= - qr/F ?f/?r (1) where S = saturation of displacing fluid (a fraction) r = time q,. = total volumetric velocity of both the displacing phase and the phase being displaced (usually, but not necessarily, assumed to be a constant) F = porosity (a fraction) f - fraction of the total volumetric velocity that is the volumetric velocity of the displacing phase (assumed to he a function of S only x = distance. Buckley and Leverett called Eq. I "a material balance equation". Actually it is derived from both a continuity equation, or material balance equation, and Darcy&apos;s law. Buckley and Leverett jumped from their Eq. 1 immediately to their Eq. 2, which was the equivalent of the following: (?x/?t)x = qr/F df/ds = qr/F f&apos;(s) (2) The jump from Eq. 1 to Eq. 2 involves apparently simple mathematics, but in that apparently simple mathematics lies a subtle point that is part of the key to the meaning of the triple value to be discussed here. Eq. 2 may be readily interpreted as saying that a point of constant saturation (on a saturation-vs-dis-tance curve) moves with a constant velocity that is proportional to the total volumetric rate, inversely proportional to the porosity, and is otherwise a function of the saturation itself. So that if one knows the derivativc with respect to saturation of the fractional flow function, f(S), for each saturation, one knows the velocity of each point of the moving saturation-vs-distance curve. The function f(S) can he determined experimentally and its derivative f&apos;(S) can be calculated. It turns out that the experimentally derived f&apos;(S) is not a monotonic function of S, but instead it has a definite maximum and declines away at both high and low saturations. This in turn means, in accordance with Eq. 2, that on a moving saturation-vs-distance curve, ccrtain intermediate saturations will travel faster than the saturations either higher or lower. The result is indicated in Fig. 1. In Fig. 1, the abscissas represent distances along a column of porous medium, which column is assumed to be uniform in cross-section perpendicular to the ab-scissal direction. The ordinates represent fractions of pore space occupied by the displacing phase, which may be either water or gas. It is assumed that the saturation is uniform over all planes perpendicular to the abscissal direction. The saturation is a function only of time and one space variable. The semi-autogenous grinding mill is the bottleneck whenever treating hard and finely fragmented ore at Benguet Corporation&apos;s Kaline Concentrator. Low milling rates result from very high and fluctuating mill power draw. Attempts to use a mill horsepower control loop to regulate feed rate were unsuccessful because of operational upsets caused by fluctuations in feed rate on downstream operations. The objective of the computer control was to maximize tonnage throughput by stabilizing the power draw at a high but safe level without upsetting subsequent operations. The semi-autogenous mill is operated in closed circuit with a stationary screen. Instrumentation consists of a feed weightometer, a power transmitter to measure mill load, a headwater flowmeter and an ultrasonic level sensor to measure the mill discharge sump level. A 64 k-byte FOX-3 Foxboro computer processes field data from various sensors and manipulates the input control variables. These variables are the fresh feed rate and the headwater flowrate. Feed rate is controlled through a supervisor-type computer program aimed at maximizing and stabilizing power draw. The control scheme was according to how the operators responded during an operator-directed automatic control mode. Mill dilution is similarly controlled. Results achieved reflect a 3% increase in tonnage milled because of the reduction in control variability that ensued.

There are a number of complex factors that influence the effectiveness of anchorage to maintain tension in rock bolts. However, a plastic analysis of the anchorage site employing certain simplifying assumptions with application of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion appears to explain the observed phenomena. Such an analysis has been made and a correlation sought with field and laboratory tests. Field tests were made in an anthracite mine in eastern Pennsylvania and included pull tests and long-term tests of a variety of anchorage devices in two basic lengths, 30 and 42 in. in two widely differing seams. Performance is reviewed for wedge, expansion shell, and resin anchorage. Laboratory tests duplicated many of the field conditions but in addition compared the performance of shells with normal and reversed serrations. This performance was compared with the predicted results from the plastic analysis. One of the major problems in conducting long-term underground tests is the selection of suitable instrumentation. All installed bolts were fitted with spherical and hardened washers to insure the best possible torque wrench readings. In addition, commercially available load cells were used. Finally, the performance of a specially developed strain-gage-equipped ring cell is viewed. Rock bolting as a method of support continues to increase with applications in many other industries in addition to mining. Nevertheless, with nearly 55,000,000 roof bolts installed in coal mines alone last year, this remains as the single greatest use. While bolts have frequently supported ground where conventional timbering could not, there are relatively few design criteria; and trial-and-error procedures prevail. Furthermore, there has been a lag in development of suitable instrumentation that is simple to install and read out, sensitive, durable, reliable, safe, and economical in evaluating the effectiveness of a bolt over long periods of time. Therefore, the pull test continues to be the most popular method of evaluating the applicability of a certain type of roof bolt under specific installation conditions. At The Pennsylvania State University in the Dept. of Mining, research has been conducted for a number of years to measure bleed off in carefully controlled laboratory experiments as well as in underground investigations."-&apos; Unfortunately, most of the instrumentation developed has been primarily suitable only for research purposes, not possessing all of the aforementioned characteristics desirable for routine underground use. Other groups also have met with restricted success. Therefore, while relatively crude, the torque wrench continues to remain as the most widely used load measuring device. While both field and laboratory tests continue to be con- ducted, analytical analyses are attempted to discover the more important design parameters in order that more efficient anchorage might be devised. Bolts are being used for a greater variety of purposes in mining. Suspending wire sideframe belt conveyors from roof bolts is a common application. The suspension of a monorail transportation system presents yet another. One such system has just been installed in a recently reopened anthracite mine and is presently being evaluated under production conditions. Preliminary studies revealed that a considerable cost reduction was possible by suspending the monorail on bolts anchored in the top. The monorail was to be installed under two widely differing conditions—a competent sandstone above the Buck Mountain seam and a softer shale top above the Skidmore. The type of anchorage device, length of bolt, and long-term performance, consistent with economy and safety, had to be established for the installation once the decision was made to suspend the system on rock bolts. This paper describes some of the testing procedures leading to a final selection. Theoretical Analysis of Expansion Shell Anchorage A detailed look at an expansion shell assembly might shed some light on the factors involved in the design of a suitable shell, Fig. 1. When a bolt is rotated, the tapered plug is forced downward, expanding the leaves laterally to grip the sides of the hole. Two friction surfaces are present: (1) the interface of the plug and leaf and (2) the interface between leaf and rock. The relationships of these friction planes, geometry of expansion shell, and properties of the rock are important in the design of an expansion shell. Therefore, an analysis assuming the rock to behave as a rigid plastic material with its yield governed by the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was made." Furthermore, the effect of friction between the leaf and rock produced by serrations was analyzed.

"Following the acquisition of grinding- circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all ""best-fit"" criterion. A search is conducted with the minimum set of water masses and narrow size ranges of solids around the circuit (called search variables), which permit the computation of any of the measured data points. Search variables are used to calculate measured values for an objective function of the form: [ ] where W, is a weighting factor•, M1 is a measured value and M. is a corresponding . value calculated from search vanables. The best values of M, are those which minimize R. The above method is compared with others that have been utilized for mass balancing circuits."

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

This paper examines the fire life systems implemented in two existing tunnels and discusses whether the standards used were appropriate. It focuses on the Terrace Tunnel as this upgrade and refurbishment is complete.The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) manages six tunnels on the State Highway network with two of these built in the last seven years. The Terrace Tunnel, opened in 1978, was refurbished with modern fire life safety systems in 2010–2012. An interim upgrade of the Mt Victoria Tunnel, opened in 1931, was also carried out at this time.In present times, few existing tunnels have undergone significant upgrades and refurbishments. The Terrace Tunnel required: new power supplies, control buildings, lighting, wall panels and jet fans, a deluge system, emergency exit lights and way-finding lights, a public address (PA) system, a radio rebroadcast system, lane control sign (LCS) and variable message sign (VMS), an over-height detection system (OHD) and a new tunnel management system.In the absence of suitable guidelines, various standards were used to carry out the refurbishment. The Austroad Guide to Road Tunnels and AS4825 Tunnel Fire Safety, although designed for new tunnels and not specifically intended for existing tunnels, provided a framework. A multi-criteria assessment of risk (MCAT) was carried out to determine the systems to be provided.The Terrace Tunnel has perhaps set a benchmark for refurbishing existing tunnels as few projects of this type have been completed recently. MINAS DE MATAHAMBRE, S.A. is a Cuban mining corporation with mines located in the Matahambre district about 100 miles westerly from Havana in the Province of Pinar del Rio. The port of entry is the subport of Santa Lucia on the north coast of Cuba. The mines are located six miles inland at the town of Minas de Matahambre. Minas de Matahambre and Santa Lucia are connected by a 9-mile automobile road, and a 30,000-ft. Leschen aerial tramway. At the subport of Santa Lucia the company maintains docks, concentrate bins, tugs, lighters, and miscellaneous shipping equipment. The power plant of the company is also located at Santa Lucia. Connection between the power plant and the mine is effected by a 30,000-ft. transmission line. In the town of Minas de Matahambre are located the mines, concentrator, shops, and warehouses. The con-centrates are transported to Santa Lucia by the Leschen aerial tramway. The mines are equipped with three shafts, viz., Nos. 1, 2, and 3. (Fig. 1.) No. 1 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical tim-bered shaft and has reached a depth of 1825 ft. This is the present main hoisting shaft. No. 2 Shaft is a four-compartment vertical shaft lined with steel sets and native hardwood lagging. Certain portions where the ground is heavy have been lined with re-inforced concrete. Practically all production will be hoisted eventually through this shaft. No. 3 Shaft is a three-compartment vertical timbered shaft. It has reached a depth of 1090 ft. Its purpose is for prospecting, ventilation, and handling men and sup-plies through the north section of the mine.

Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.

During the last century the importance of coal as a natural re- source has frequently come to the attention of the general public, but never before nave circumstances combined to focus as much attention on coal as it receives today. There is the ever increasing demand for energy that can be met only by coal consumption, coupled with a growing awareness of man&apos;s potential for despoiling his own environment. Society monitors the use of the remaining resources with an increasingly critical eye and, for obvious reasons, surface mining operations tend to draw an unusual amount of public attention. While the surface mine is a successful economic competitor with other uses of the earth&apos;s outer skin, one of the unrewarding results of such activity is tile simultaneous destruction of two of our most important resources--the coal seam and the surface soil. In a relative sense the coal seam is a nonreplaceable resource but the surface soil can be restored. Unfortunately, little attention has been given to land reclamation and even less has been devoted to the restoration of a productive surface soil. The research reported in this paper was de- signed to test the relative productivity of newly reclaimed surface mine spoils in western Illinois. The results are preliminary in nature but may aid in the future redevelopment of mine spoil soils in the Illinois Coal Basin.

It is proposed to present some of the results of observation of the geologists of the Appalachian division during the past seven years, and of experimental study during the past three years, on the subject of structural geology in the Appalachian Province. The article must be brief, even at the risk of obscurity; but a more complete and fully illustrated paper will appear in the Thirteenth Annual Report of the United States Geological Survey. Certain Facts. The following facts are first to be taken account of: From the Cambrian age to the Carboniferous there existed a conti nent stretching southeast from the present range of the Blue Ridge, covering what is now eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, eastern Vir ginia, North and South Carolina and eastern Georgia, with some un known part of the present Atlantic ocean-bed. Northwest from this continent lay a sea, reaching to the west and north of the Mississippi. Sedimentary deposits derived from the land accumulated with or ganic remains, in the sea; the greater part fell in a narrow zone along the shore, the remainder spread in a comparatively thin sheet over the bottom of the Mediterranean of North America. The resulting strata measure, near Mauch Chunk, Pa., 30,000 feet; over much of Pennsylvania, 20,000 to 25,000 feet; over eastern Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, but 10,000 to 15,000 feet. The stratified mass, considered with reference to its broad physical char acters, consists of three members: A base of shale and sandstone ; a middle of limestone, 2500 to 6000 feet thick—a stratum probably not equalled in the world for uniformity of character and massive ness; and a top of shale and sandstone, 5000 to 23,000 feet thick. This mass has been folded. In a zone 900 miles long and 50 to 125 miles wide, the strata exhibit such attitudes and relations as could result only from a force of compression acting from north west or from southeast, or from both directions. Bureau of Mines research on methods for reclaiming land disturbed by the minerals sector of the economy has produced a specific procedure for effectively germinating seed of Indian ricegrass, a drought-tolerant plant valuable for reclaiming arid and semiarid sites. This report describes the procedure which consists of acid-treating the seed followed by temperature and light cycling treatments. Use of the procedure resulted in an average germination rate of 29 percent, ranging from 18 to 56 percent. Seed subjected to long cold treatment but with acid treatment yielded an average germination rate of 9.2 percent, ranging from 6.6 to 14.7 percent. Untreated seeds (controls) gave germination rates less than 0.1 percent.

The requirements of metals by modern society have created big challenges for mining engineers minerals processing engineers, metallurgical engineers and economists to produce these metals economically from mineral deposits which contain, with time, less and less value. The advances of science and technology allow, today, the exploitation of mineral deposits which only few years ago would not have been considered economical. However, there are limitations both on the minimum grade of recoverable values contained in the ore to be fed to a mill or on the concentrate to be smelted, and on the maximum content of "impurities" i.e. chemical elements which are difficult or expensive to refine from the ore, from the concentrate or from the metal. It is also known that the cost of treatment in a mill or in a smelter, for unit of metal contained in the ore or in the concentrate, increases as the grade of the recoverable values contained in them decreases and also if the content of impurities increases. In order to work a mineral deposit economically it is necessary to ensure not only that it has more than a minimum content of values, less than a maximum content of impurities and that there exists a good up-grading or metallurgical process but also to ensure that the opti-

Precision lattice-constant measurements have been widely used in the study of cubic solid solutions but as yet have been rarely applied to noncubic solid solutions. (See, however, references I and 2.) With the high precision at present attainable in the measurement of lattice constants, the X-ray method should be readily applicable to noncubic solid solutions. In the work reported here, hexagonal close-packed magnesium was used as the solvent and either lead, bismuth or gold as the solute. In the magnesium-lead and magnesium-bismuth systems the a and c lattice constants were determined as a function of composition, densities were calculated from these lattice-constant data, these theoretical densities were compared with those directly measured and the solid solubility limit was determined on quenched specimens over a considerable range of temperature. In the magnesium-gold system, the solid solubility is very small but we have obtained an indirect check on the solubility limit previously reported. Materials and Preparation oF the Alloys The magnesium used was obtained from the Aluminum Company of America and was 99.987 per cent pure. Impurities as reported On the label were: Fe, Al, 0&apos;004 per cent; Si, 0.009 per cent; Zn, trace; Cu, Pb, nil. The bismuth was Merck&apos;s analytical grade, minimum purity 99.95 per cent. Maximum impurities as listed on the label were: Fe, 0.008 per cent; Pb, 0.010 per cent; Ag, 0.010 per cent; Cu, 0.005 per cent; Sn, 0.003 per cent; Sb, 0.00; As, 0.000; S, 0.01 per cent. The gold was purified by double precipitation with sulphur dioxide. The lattice constants of these three metals have been previously reported.3 The lead used was test lead, silver free and with a maximum of 0.10 per cent heavy metal impurities. The lattice constant 01 this lead has been measured and found to be 4.94057 ± 0.00016 at 25°C. The alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the constituent metals in magnesia-lined alundum crucibles under an atmosphere of hydrogen purified by passing over magnesium heated to 500°C. The magnesia lining prevented contamination 01 the alloys with aluminum. Vacuum melting could not be used because of the volatility of magnesium. A high-frequency induction furnace was used for the melting operation and the stirring action of the current resulted in thorough mixing of the constituents. The melts were allowed to freeze in the crucible, the ingots obtained weighed about 10 grams. Maximum impurities as listed on the label were: Fe, 0.008 per cent; Pb, 0.010 per cent; Ag, 0.010 per cent; Cu, 0.005 per cent; Sn, 0.003 per cent; Sb, 0.00; As, 0.000; S, 0.01 per cent. The gold was purified by double precipitation with sulphur dioxide. The lattice constants of these three metals have been previously reported.3 The lead used was test lead, silver free and with a maximum of 0.10 per cent heavy metal impurities. The lattice constant 01 this lead has been measured and found to be 4.94057 ± 0.00016 at 25°C. The alloys were prepared by melting together weighed amounts of the constituent metals in magnesia-lined alundum crucibles under an atmosphere of hydrogen purified by passing over magnesium heated to 500°C. The magnesia lining prevented contamination 01 the alloys with aluminum. Vacuum melting could not be used because of the volatility of magnesium. A high-frequency induction furnace was used for the melting operation and the stirring action of the current resulted in thorough mixing of the constituents. The melts were allowed to freeze in the crucible, the ingots obtained weighed about 10 grams. A Feasibility Study to determine the future of ZC Mines was completed in mid 1987. Early in this study, which lasted two years, it was identified that significant reductions in treatment costs would result if the Zinc Corporation Concentrator was closed. All of the production from the existing two mines, The Zinc Corporation Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC), would then be treated in the concentrator at NBHC.After a partial upgrade of the NBHC concentrator, the ZC concentrator was finally closed and all of the equipment disposed of. This closure highlighted the need to concentrate all ore haulage in one shaft to further reduce operating costs and remove the cost of surface transport of ZC production to the improved NBHC concentrator. This paper outlines the changes that were made to improve the haulage system for ZC Mines. After a number of options were investigated, it was finally decided that the upgrade of the existing NBHC haulage shaft was the best option even though some production would be lost while the upgrade was in progress.
