PT. Indo Muro Kencana (PT.IMK) is a gold mine that is located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. Drilling and blasting activity is applied in order to support mining production. Drilling and Blasting (D&B) planning is conducted by its engineers. A drilling and blasting contractor conducts drilling and blasting activity. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of the scaled depth of burial (Chiappetta and Treleven, 1997) in explosive charging sheet application to increase blast efficiency. The function of the scaled depth of burial is to maintain stemming height above explosive charge in order to prevent the ‘over energy’ condition, to reduce the excessive fly rock possibility, to maintain rock fragmentation (digger’s productivity) and to increase blast efficiency. The focus of this paper is to implement the scaled depth of burial as a reference in D&B planning and practice, especially in designing stemming height. The purpose of this paper is to validate that the scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool in D&B practice in PT.IMK. However, scaled depth of burial cannot applied as an engineering tool to determine stemming height above explosive charge for trim blastholes and secondary blasting area. In general, the implementation of the scaled depth of burial in PT.IMK is applicable for production blastholes (ore and waste blasting). In conclusion, it is clear that scaled depth of burial can be used as an engineering tool to create explosive charging sheet and also to increase blast efficiency (ore and waste blasting) in PT.IMK.

This study proposes that the moving search neighbourhood used in ordinary kriging selects a subset of data surrounding each estimation block, and that this subset represents a local subpopulation of which the distributional parameters can be used to determine local, spatially-adaptive outlier capping values. This paper introduces a distance-weighted capping method applied within the kriging search ellipse after kriging weight calculation, transitioning from one-dimensional point estimation to two-dimensional block estimation for Witwatersrand-type gold deposits. Accurate ore grade estimation is essential for mine planning and economic evaluation, particularly in deep-level gold mines where extreme grade values (outliers) may distort resource assessments. Traditional capping methods, which apply a uniform threshold to outliers, often fail to account for spatial and geological variability, leading to biased estimates. A high-resolution simulation generates a synthetic ‘ground truth’ orebody, subsampled to mimic real-world data scarcity. A two-parameter lognormal distribution models grade variability, with capping values optimised by minimising the mean squared error between estimated and simulated block grades. Comparative analyses against traditional capping techniques demonstrate that the dynamic method improves regression fit, reduces conditional bias, and aligns more closely with production reconciliation data. Validation using swath plots, QQ-plots, and mine call factor comparisons confirms that the spatially adaptive capping technique mitigates over- and under-estimation, particularly in high-grade zones. Results indicate superior performance over conventional domain capping, with higher R² values and better alignment with actual production metrics. This approach offers a reproducible, scientifically rigorous framework for resource estimation, reducing reliance on rigid sub-domaining while enhancing decision-making in complex ore bodies. The study underscores the importance of integrating geological information with advanced geostatistics to optimise grade estimation and mine planning.

The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

In trying to find a grout, or some kind of stabilizer that would work in this application, we established some performance criteria. Of those, what I controlled the most was viscosity, then I had a whole list of other criteria. I needed a long, controllable gel time, durability and the ability to set and stabilize the soil. So I looked through a lot of different stabilizers, some really crazy ones and also the typical chemical grouts that are used. The typical chemical grouts were eliminated because of long-term durability concerns, the need for having extended gel times, and several other concerns. I would be happy to discuss that with you further after the talk if you're interested. But, generally it was based on viscosity, gel time, and the need for extended gel time. In terms of the relative density of the sand many other grouts could have been used. But the main issue was trying to develop this way to do low pressure grouting that would not cause invasive disruption of the site. We couldn't go in and grout it, put centers, so most of the other grouts wouldn't work for various reasons. The forty percent relative density samples were prepared by plubiation. That was both during the cyclic testing stage of the research, which happened a few years back, and also during the box model and the laminar box models at RPI. In terms of what criteria were used to determine the success of the grouting, when I initially started this work what I did was take the grouted samples and I subjected them to cyclic triaxial testing. What I did was take a look at the cyclic deformation resistance of different concentrations of grouted colloidal silica treated sand. I looked first at 20% concentration because I wanted something that I knew worked and then I gradually decreased to 15%, 10%, and 5%. What I was most concerned with was that it did not liquefy and that it was able to hold together it and experience some deformation. But most importantly it needed to not liquefy. So, that was the biggest issue in determining the success of the grouting. In terms of the centrifuge modeling it was done by looking at several components: from looking at the pictures of the bending moments, looking at the acceleration records and how the acceleration records were transferred through the soil, looking at the reduction in the lateral displacement and those kinds of issues. Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,

A petrographic and chemical investigation was conducted to determine the occurrence and distribution of the organic and inorganic forms of sulfur in various size and specific gravity fractions of a high volatile, A-rank, Pittsburgh seam coal. The investigation was conducted to aid in the resolution of the problem of how metallurgical coke of lower sulfur content can be produced from high sulfur coals. The Pittsburgh raw coal contains about 2.4% S in two dominant forms: pyritic and organic. Pyritic sulfur constitutes about 57% of the total sulfur in the raw coal and occurs in macroscopic and microscopic-size particles. A plant cleaning process mechanically separates between 50 and 60% of the pyritic sulfur, mainly the macroscopic particles. The organic sulfur constitutes 41% of the total sulfur in the raw coal and 55% of the sulfur in the washed coal. Thus, organic sulfur is not reduced by physical methods of separation. Organic sulfur occurs in all the coal entities, but in general, increases as the exinoid content of the coal increases. In this study, it was found that carbonizing certain selected low gravity coal fractions containing an average of 0.45% pyritic sulfur and 1.01% organic sulfur produced cokes containing an average of 0.22% pyritic sulfur and 0.91% organic sulfur. However, the organic sulfur in the coke is probably derived in part from the heating of pyrite in the presence of carbon. Thus, the total sulfur in the coal carbonized is the most important factor affecting the sulfur content of the coke produced. Concentration of microscopic pyritic and organic sulfur in the middling-type coal indicates the necessity for rejecting as much of this material as is economically feasible. Most of the sulfur introduced into the blast furnace originates from the coke. Although the sulfur content of the hot metal can be controlled by the addition of flux, the flux used restricts the productivity of the furnace by displacing ore and requires first to be smelted; therefore, low sulfur coke is highly desirable. Since the sulfur content of coke is dependent upon the sulfur content of the coals from which the coke is produced, low sulfur coals are required to produce low sulfur coke. In the western Pennsylvania area, large quantities of good coking coal are available from the Pittsburgh seam, but this coal unfortunately contains relatively large quantities of sulfur. To provide information that might be useful in reducing the sulfur content of this coal in the cleaning process, an investigation was conducted to determine the physical and chemical forms in which this sulfur occurs and with what petrographic components it might be associated. The Pittsburgh seam coal, like most other coals, contains two dominant forms of sulfur: one occurs as the minerals pyrite and/or marcasite and is referred to as pyritic sulfur; the other is combined with the coal substance and is called organic sulfur. Pyritic sulfur is amenable to physical methods of separation, whereas organic sulfur is not. Pyritic sulfur particles must be freed from the surrounding coal if they are to be removed in the washing process. Generally, this requires crushing; the required degree of crushing being a function of the size and distribution of the pyrite. The present investigation was conducted to 1) determine the size, distribution and association of sulfur-bearing minerals in the coal and 2) to determine whether the organic sulfur has a preferential association with specific coal entities. If a preferential association exists, this knowledge may be useful in devising a method for organic sulfur reduction. In addition, a study was made to determine the extent to which pyritic and organic forms of sulfur in the coal contribute to the sulfur in the coke produced from this coal. A representative 3%-ton sample of raw coal was crushed to —3 in. and screened into square-mesh sizes: 3 to 1 in., 1 to % in., % to % in., % in. to 10 mesh, 10 to 35 mesh, and 35 to 200 mesh. This paper aims to present the results of an investigation concerning gravitative differentiation in lava flows, based on a quantitative microscopic and chemical study of a Triassic basalt from Nova Scotia, and confirmed by data secured from a study of certain Keweenawan ophites. At Cape d'Or, Nova Scotia, near the head of the Bay of Bundy, marine erosion has exposed a series of Triassic basalt flows in which copper has been sought for a number of years. Studies of the thickest flow of the series with regard to volumetric composition, specific gravity, and grain have been made by the junior author, and measurements by students at Tufts College, together with confirmatory observations of the same nature on this and other flows by the senior writer, and chemical analyses made by the Division of Chemistry, Mines Branch, Ottawa,' all show differentiation in lava flows comparable to that in intrusive bodies. The work was made possible by the availability of the drill-cores, the property of Tufts College, and emphasizes the desirability of the study of drill-cores from other localities. Measurements of the specific gravities of certain Keweenawan lava flows of Michigan by the senior author, from material collected in 1915, will be given as a comparison to those of the Cape d'Or flow. It has been found that the specific gravity of drill-cores, or volume per cubic foot, can be readily obtained by measuring their dimensions. This can be done to an accuracy of within 1 per cent. in pieces of core over 100 mm. in length by using a micrometer gage for the diameter, and taking the average of six measurements of the diameter; and the average of four measurements of the length made with a finely graduated ruler. The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. Corrosion and product contamination have been difficult problems for extractive metallurgy industries in the U.S. because of the highly active chemicals used. During the past twelve years, other industries, particularly the chemical and paper segments, began to combat this problem with some degree of success using newer materials of construction, including reinforced plastics. These materials are made by combining a corrosion resistant thermosetting resin with a glass fiber reinforcing material and are used to con¬struct hoods, stacks, blowers, tanks, towers, pipe, and equipment of the most complex configurations. For service in contact with aggressive chemicals, the equipment is most often fabricated with the bisphenol-A fumarate polyester resins because of their resistance to corrosive attack. Data from both laboratory work and case histories of field applications are presented-for many common chemicals found in extractive processes. Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

Mineral exploration involves the selective collection, organization, evaluation, and interpretation of geologic and economic data. The sources for such data are original field observations and existing documented information of various types (publications, reports, maps, company files, etc.). As exploration data are accumulated, their storage, organization, indexing, and J retrieval is key to exploration progress. Initial use of computers by mineral exploration groups indicates that data can be meaningfully handled by machines. A computer system makes possible: 1) the storage, manipulation, collation, and selective retrieval of data; 2) the utilization of data banks developed by geologic service groups and available at relatively low cost; and 3) the retrieval of stored data more rapidly, completely, and effectively than by manual systems. Profitable utilization of these capabilities is conditioned by several factors, particularly by the information selected for the system data base and by the design of the computer system itself.

"Following the depletion of nickel sulfide ores, laterites are considered as one of the main sources for producing nickel and cobalt. One of the primary steps in pyrometallurgical extraction of nickel from laterites involves partial reduction of the ore at temperatures below 1000°C. Studying the kinetics of laterite reduction provides valuable information on reducibility of nickel laterites using coal as a reductant. The present study investigates the reduction behavior of a nickel laterite by thermal gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal reduction tests and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed to find the main reactions that occur during the process. The kinetic parameters were calculated by Coats-Redfern method. The general model of simple reaction f(a)=(1-a)n was used for calculating kinetic parameters.INTRODUCTION Nickel (Ni) naturally occurs in the form of sulfide and laterite ores. Laterite ores are mainly available in tropical regions. Weathering phenomena during millions of years has led to the formation of several layers with specific mineralogy (Butt & Cluzel, 2013). The three main layers downward are limonite, smectite, and saprolite (Crundwell et al., 2011). Although laterites are the most available nickel ore resource (70%), their share in the overall Ni production is limited to 40% (Crundwell et al., 2011). The main reasons for not materializing the full potential of laterites are as follows (Ray et al., 1985): •,Laterite ores contain high water content (free and combined) which in turn results in high energy consumption of the extraction process. •,As Ni is present in the form of solid solution in laterites, physical upgrading methods such as flotation are not effective in increasing the Ni content before the extraction process. •,Extracting Ni from sulfide ores involve exothermic reactions which are beneficial due to decreasing the overall energy requirement of the process, however there is not efficient release of energy in the process of extracting Ni from laterite ores."

Japan's contact with the mining industry of British Columbia began as far back as 1952 with the first shipment of iron ore from the Texada mine. Five years later, the Big Three steel mills of Japan-that is, Nihon Kokan Kaisha, together with Yawata and Fuji Steel Mills-dispatched a coal survey mission to inspect coal mines in British Columbia. This resulted in 100,000 tons of coking coal being initially imported by Japan from western Canada in 1959. Also in 1959, Yawata, Fuji, NKK, Kawasaki and Sumitomo sent an iron ore survey group to Alaska and Canada. During the preceding year, Nippon Mining Company and Sumitomo Metal Mining Company initiated a project whereby they would assist in the development of Cowichan Copper on Vancouver Island. As a net result of this activity Japanese mining groups, who had heretofore concentrated on Southeast Asia and South America, finally turned their eyes toward Canada. It was in the fall of 1960 that the government of Japan, in order to keep pace with Japan's rapid economic development, announced a long-range economic plan whereby her gross national income would be doubled by 1970. This had the effect of further propelling Japan's desire to develop sources of raw material supplies abroad. With the development of Craigmont Mines and the signing of a long-term contract to export copper concentrates to Japan, and with the Sumitomo group's extending financial assistance to develop Bethlehem Copper, Canada itself began to realize that Japan was indeed a very important market for British Columbia. A number of surveys to develop mines in British Columbia was begun with an eye on Japan as the major market, and the activity has continued to this day.

"THE Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation, through its subsidiaries, the Old Sydney Collieries and the Dominion Coal Company Limited, produces 4% million tons of coal annually from eight submarine collieries situated on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island. The present workings have a frontage of 20 miles and extend 31/2 miles under the Atlantic ocean on gradients varying from 4 deg. to 24 deg. To date, some of the workings have reached .a depth of cover up to 2,800 feet.The pitching seams, the annual seaward advance, the resulting depth of cover and the rdatively soft roof and floor have necessitated the adoption of extensive longwall mining, with room-and-pillar mining con-fined to areas above the 1,000 foot cover line, where 60 per cent of the -coal is left standing in pillars to support the ocean floor. Longwall mining accounts for 87 per cent of the total production with the remaining outputs obtained from room-and-pillar work and the narrow work development. Seventy-four per cent of the longwall production and 41 per -cent of the room and development production is completely mechanized.Although 2 tons of water is pumped from the collieries for each ton of coal mined, the working sections are relatively dry as the heavy make of water is essentially surface drain-age from the land crop areas. The dry workings and the long haulage distances, which in many cases exceed 4 miles, have resulted in a continuing programme to combat the dust hazard, both at the working face and along the mine roadways."

Introduction Borne out of the need for reductions in capital expenditure and increased production, several new and innovative carbon systems have been developed for small precious metal heap leach operations throughout the United States. Perhaps the most important aspect of these systems is the carbon column. Though diverse in design, these columns can be categorized into three basic types. The first is known as the gravity flow type or Cortez type. As the name indicates, solution flows via gravity, throughout 4 to 6 columns which are arranged in a normally stepped con- figuration which is conventionally upflow in design. The second type, known as the vertical column, is an arrangement whereby flow is established through pressurization in an upward manner, throughout 4 to 6 columns in a vertically stacked configuration. This arrangement is typically intended for use with small portable heap leach operations and employs a semi-continuous mode thus preventing gravity from occurring. The third type and newest development in carbon columns is an arrangement whereby the solution flows throughout 4 to 6 columns placed in a side by side configuration and pressurized by a single feed pump (Figure 1). A unique aspect to the third type, is that the adsorb and desorb cycles are accomplished in the same column, due to a fixed carbon charge. An in-depth analysis is warranted due to numerous advantages of this arrangement, and is therefore the subject of this paper. Advantages and Variations One advantage to the third type of carbon column is the fact that initial capital expenditures and operating man- power requirements are reduced. Another advantage is that the system can be made fully portable up to a 0.0315 m3/s (500 gpm) capacity. Systems of this nature are operational at several sites. Above this flow rate, the system's portability is one which can be maintained, but disadvantages (i.e. larger diameter carbon column and greater weights) far outweigh the advantages. There are several variations in each of these systems which allow for unique operation. For example, carbon columns made highly portable, can be moved from unitized heap leach operations to central stripping facilities. Although this method has been used in Colorado, transportation of these units has been known to be quite cumbersome. If distances exceed 5 km (3.2 miles) then special front-end loaders are required. This limits heap locations to within 5 km (3.2 miles) of the central processing facility. Another example transports the carbon charge from the heap leach locations to a centralized processing facility; this method is quite effective. For the past 5 years one mine has employed this technique of transporting carbon in 907 kg (1 ton lots), in DOT containers, towed by company pick-ups. This operation uses a vertical column with a 907 kg (1 ton) carbon charge. A third example uses static carbon columns with fixed carbon charges. Carbon Adsorption System The carbon adsorption system (Figure 1) is fed by a single preg solution feed pump. This feed pump pushes the preg solution through all four to six fixed charged carbon columns, which are on line. The sequencing of the carbon columns is achieved using valves. Expansion of the carbon charge is dependent upon the carbon selected. The carbon typically used is a 6 x 12 mesh size, with a nominal flow rate of 0.00135 - 0.00138 m 3/s (22-25 gpm) per square foot of carbon, based on a 40% bed expansion. With 8 x 16 mesh size,

"In this paper we investigate the consequences of using conventional triaxial peak strength criteria in the polyaxial stress conditions that occur around the end of a long circular underground opening. A series of 3d boundary element analyses were performed using Examine3D to determine the stresses induced around the tunnel in different in-situ stress conditions. To discuss the applicability of a triaxial strength criterion in failure prediction, strength factors were computed for both the Ottosen polyaxial strength criterion and the triaxial Hoek-Brown criterion. Assuming that the Ottosen criterion is an accurate indicator of strength factor, the discrepancy from this value due to the Hoek-Brown criterion is the error in prediction.In order to simultaneously show the error in prediction and actual strength factor, a quantitative bivariate colour scheme is used to visualize the results. This allows rapid identification of regions with large error, and where either unsafe or overly conservative conditions occur. We show how the inappropriate use of triaxial criteria rather than polyaxial criteria leads to an under- or over-estimation of strength factor, and can result in uneconomic or unsafe design. Extending the analysis to different in situ stress regimes shows how the in situ stress conditions affect the assessment."

This paper describing the method of mining a deposit of vanadium ore near Rifle, Colo., is one of a series of similar papers on metal-mining methods and costs being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines. This vanadium deposit probably is the largest yet found in North America. It is situated 12 miles northeast of Rifle, Colo. (see fig. 1), on the southern flank of tae White River plateau, and is at an altitude of 6,500 feet. Between 150 and 200 tons of ore are mined daily and trucked to the mill at Rifle. The product of the mill is fined vanadium oxide, which is shipped to the company's plaits at Columbiana, Ohio, and Niagara Falls, N. Y., for the electric manufacture of ferrovanadium. HISTORY The deposit was discovered about 1909 by men prospecting for carnotite. Its outcrop on the bola cliff of Rifle Canon had been known to stockmen for many years.

Volume II of this two-part series on Submarine Tailings Disposal (STD) as a tailings management option for coastal and island mines contains descriptions of lesser known case histories. The Misima gold mine (Papua New Guinea) and the Black Angel lead-zinc mine (Greenland) are described in some detail as the best documented cases. Atlas copper mine (The Philippines) is less fully described due to relative lack of documentation. The Misima and Atlas STD systems are working to their design criteria. At Black Angel the system adopted did not prevent contamination for a number of reasons, which are now understood. Two cases are described where STD is being developed. They are the Cayeli Bakir copper mine Turkey), and the Toquepala and Cuajone mines (Peru). There is excellent documentation available for both cases. Three case histories are described where tailings have reached the sea either through beach or river discharge. In one case the STD option has been explored (Marcopper Mine, The Philippines). In the others we explore in hindsight whether STD might have been a viable alternative using the Screening Criteria that this Volume develops - see below. The mines are Bougainville Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea, and Jordan River Mine (Canada). There is potential for STD at all three sites. Finally, the Volume presents Screening Criteria for appraising STD, based on the experience in design, operation and environmental impact reviewed in the case histories.

In December, 1894, the Cambria Iron Company made a number of heats of Bessemer steel to be used in structures by one of its customers, subject to inspection and tests by a firm of consulting engineers, one of the requirements being that the material should riot exceed .08 per cent. of phosphorus. In other respects the requirements were such that they could only be met by material of good quality; but the general spe cification is not introduced here, as it is not the purpose of this paper to deal with anything except certain difficulties encoun tered in determining the phosphorus-content of the material in a manner satisfactory to both seller and buyer. Preliminary determinations of phosphorus were made in sample-ingots from each of the heats from which material was rolled for the order in question, and these preliminary chemical tests, made in the laboratory of the Cambria Iron Company, showed that, with very few exceptions, every heat was within the prescribed limit of phosphorus. After the material had been rolled, sample-drilling8 of finished material were taken from the various heats in the regular manner in use at the works, these samples being thoroughly mixed and divided into two parts, one of which was analyzed at the works' laboratory and the other sent to the inspecting engineer. Several hundred determinations were made from this mate rial without reaching an agreement between the work of the inspector's chemist and that of the works' chemist; but as it is not the object of this memorandum to treat of this part of the subject at length, it is considered sufficient to present herewith only a few of these first determinations. The analyses given in Table I. are those of the original series made on the heats which were afterwards resampled for final determination by an arbitrator; and they are selected for this reason, as the entire " comparison is thus rendered more complete.
