"Comminution is an energy intensive and expensive process consuming approximately 40-50% of the total processing costs in a mining operation. This process poses an even greater challenge with gold ores due to their low elemental concentration and small particle size. Over 99.9% of the ore fed to the mill is waste which must be removed during the ore processing stage. Preconcentrating the Run of Mine (ROM) ore before feeding the mill will result in significant cost savings. In partnership with Sacré-Davey Engineering, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited identified this opportunity and is currently evaluating the implementation of sorting technology to preconcentrate the ore or upgrade the waste material at its operations. This paper will discuss the steps adopted by Agnico Eagle in the evaluation and installation of sorting technology at its operations. Since the Company has a large portfolio of operations, the first step in the project was to shortlist the operations that had the highest probability for successful application of the technology. Following this, the top three operations were selected for bench scale evaluation. The projects which showed the most economic potential were then considered for detailed evaluation and pilot plant installations. This paper provides an insight into the methodology followed by Agnico Eagle and Sacré-Davey in the evaluation of the technology.INTRODUCTION The benefits of ore sorting technology are being increasingly understood by the mining industry today. The application of ore sorting in gold mining is attractive due to the nature of the mineral distribution. The presence of high value minerals distributed in an extremely small mass of the ROM ore creates a tremendous opportunity for preconcentration with ore sorting. Since Agnico Eagle currently has a portfolio of eight operating mines and numerous development projects and exploration properties, the challenge was to identify the deposits which had the most favourable mineralogy and grade distribution for successful ore sorting. The success of ore sorting is mostly based on the minerals present in the deposit and the grade distribution. The minerals signify the amenability of the deposit for ore sorting and the kind of sensing technology to be used. On the other hand, the grade distribution demonstrates the amount of material that can be rejected without losing value. In order to understand a deposit’s characteristics, it is important to examine the sample’s behaviour with various sensors and then assay it to know its actual value. It is a common practice in the mining industry to document assay value of drill cores and/or material feeding in and out of the mill. However, those VALUES (are insufficient to understand the grade variability on a granular basis. To capture the ore variability in very high resolution and significantly improve the selectivity of the material feeding the mill, it is vital to assay the samples on a rock-by-rock basis, as this is the level of resolution which will be examined by the ore sorter during sorting. A careful and elaborate procedure was followed in evaluating the technology at Agnico Eagle’s operations which is discussed in this paper."

An experimental method is described to compare strain data for rock and rock bolts when exposed to shock waves released by blastings. Static and dynamic strains were measured. Bolt gage response indicated a static decay of the bolt anchorage coupled with a reaction due to blasting vibrations. A distinct loss of bolt tension was indicated during vibrations and this was accompanied by a smaller but steady loss of tension due to static loading. The strain losses were found to relate to the shock source distance and the vibrational amplitude in the rock and bolts. Millions of roof bolts are used each year to stabilize mine openings and prevent their failure. Frequently, bolts become loose and lose their effectiveness as reinforcement to the mine structure. Many attempts have been made to determine the cause of loosening, including observation of the bolt tension or bolt torque through the use of torque wrenches, compression pads, and load cells. Pull tests have been used extensively to determine anchorage characteristics.102 These investigations have shown that even when bolts are loaded below the nominal anchorage capacity of the rock under 'static' conditions they exhibit a decay of load through adjustments and slippage at the bolt anchor. Since bolts are quite often found with the plate hanging loose from the rock surface, this condition suggests that some additional mechanism may have played a part in loosening the anchorage. Vibration from blasting or shock loading have been suggested as one cause in this type of anchorage deterioration. This paper gives the results of an investigation carried on at the University of Missouri at Rolla to determine the influence of shock waves on rock-bolt anchorage stability. ROCK BOLT ANCHORAGE UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS In this report dynamic loading conditions are defined as conditions under which rock and bolts are exposed to vibrations occurring as a consequence of blasting, machine vibrations, earthquakes, rock bursts, etc. Whatever the location of the shock source, the waves created suffer extensive alterations along their travel paths, depending upon the vibrational properties and geometric parameters of the transmitting media. Together with reflection, refraction and diffraction at material boundaries, waves suffer changes in their nature to form tensile, compressive and shear waves. They become polarized, retracted, accelerated, dispersed, so that the waves incident at a point in the material can be the result of either one or a combination of this wide range of processes. A certain fraction of the wave energy will be lost due to friction, deformation, and material failure at the anchor-rock contact. Thus, the physical nature of wave propagation is such that it inhibits an exact analytical solution. For this reason this investigation should be considered qualitative rather than quantitative even though numerical data have been used as a base. CONCEPT OF THE INVESTIGATION Experiments were designed to find, from a series of rock bolts installed in natural mine rock, whether or not, and to what extent, bolt tensions would be influenced when bolts were exposed repeatedly to shock waves such as those produced by blasting. Electronic instrumentation available in the rock mechanics laboratory of the University of Missouri at Rolla was used to observe wave development in the rock and vibrational reactions in the bolts. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fig. 1 illustrates schematically the experimental equipment. Electric resistance wire strain gages were used as sensors for the strain response of the rock and the bolts. Bolts were 5 ft long and 5/8 in. in diam, equipped with two-leaf type expansion shells for 1 3/8 in. boreholes. The bolt gages were mounted by use of Du Pont Household Cement, covered with an epoxy insulation and then enclosed in a copper foil for electronic shielding. For details of placement and the wiring diagram see Fig. 2 and 3. The output of both the rock gages and the bolt gages was fed into cathode ray oscilloscopes from which the vibrational traces could be photographed. A static strain indicator was also used to read the output of all gages.

A robust theory of sedimentation-consolidation evolved and was accepted by researchers worldwide in the last two decades of the 20th century. This theory provides a reliable method of thickener design, simulation and control. However, a process model, simple or sophisticated, empirical or phenomenological, is useful only if it is possible to determine, in an objective way, its experimental parameters. Although it is important for a mineral processing plant to perform periodical laboratory test to determine thickening parameters, and in this way adjust the operation, not always these tests represent the behavior of the material in the process. It is important to be able to determine these parameters directly in the thickeners. Research workers at the University of Concepción developed new instrumentation, algorithms and software for the determination of thickening parameters. In this paper, two new instruments for the on-line determination of the settling velocity and the compressibility of the sediment are presented and results of tests in a major mineral processing plant in Chile are described.

The effect of tempering temperature and time upon the properties of quenched steel is clearly a subject of great practical importance, as well as of considerable theoretical interest. It would be very desirable to be able to predict the properties of a quenched steel when given any selected tempering cycle, with a minimum of experimental work upon that heat or even type of steel. Two problems are involved: one consists of relating the structure obtained to the physical properties, and will not be discussed here; the other, with which this paper deals, involves the relations of time, temperature and composition with the structure obtained 011 tempering. Indentation hardness is perhaps the most convenient quantitative measure of the tempered structure, or of what might be called the "degree of tempering." Undoubtedly, it is not an exact measure, and in some cases (as when temper-brittleness occurs) pieces of the same quenched and tempered steel may have widely differing properties at the same hardness. However, hardness has the advantage of being simple to determine and is certainly the most widely used indication of the degree of tempering. Moreover, for fully quenched steels that are not temper-brittle and do not contain retained austenite when quenched, it appears that, in general, if the hardness of the steel is the same, the tensile and impact properties will also be identical, whether a high or a low tempering temperature is used. The tempering charts available in the metallurgical literature usually give the hardness as a function of tempering temperature for only one tempering time. However, in practice, tempering times frequently vary, and a method of converting tempering curves for one time to tempering curves for some other time would be very valuable. It is also advantageous, in determining the tempering treatment necessary for a given part, not to have to temper samples at several temperatures for the time used for the commercial tempering operation. A more satisfactory procedure would be to employ times of the order of 10 to 30 min., rather than 5 or 10 hr., and if possible to use only one temperature. Furthermore, it is frequently desirable, for reasons such as temper-brittleness,* to obtain a given hardness with short times at relatively high temperatures, and it would be convenient to be able to compute without tests the time required to produce this hardness. This article presents results of studies performed to determine the feasibility of using low-grade limonite ores from Yunnan deposit. Laboratory tests and commercial trials have shown that the magnetic separation can be performed with a high high-grade concentrates. The quality of the preparation concentration meets the requirements for blast-furnace smelting. The results as a whole demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing bank limonite ore. Yunnan limonite?s magnetic separation, roasting magnetic separation and flotation experimental study shows that grade of the ore grade can been from 32.91% heighten to 58.64%, a recovery of iron is 90.87%, productive rate is 51% through orthogonal test optimization; roasting magnetic separation can obtain that the grade of iron preparation concentrate is 61.16%, recovery is 67.39%, productive rate is 36%. As far as economy and enviormental protection is concerned, strong mag-netic suggested a more appropriate process. Keywords: Limonite; Roast; Magnetic separation

Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

The revival of the mining industry at Captain's Flat after a long period of years of inactivity has attracted attention to the importance of the ore-deposits of that field as potential sources of supply of lead and zinc. Mindful of the necessity for taking stock of the State's mineral resources, the Department of Mines of New South Wales as part of its programme of geological investigation, carried out a survey of the oredeposits and associated country rocks during 1938 and 1940.Surface geology was mapped in detail and all available exposures were examined and logged. Unfortunately, and this condition militates against the formulation of conclusions because of insufficiem.t data, some of the older workings, notably in Keating's Section, were inaccessible and the logging of levels and stopes is by no means as complete as could be desired. However, with the progress of development and exploration, further information of geological value will come to hand for incorporation in supplementary reports. It may be expected that, under such circumstances, modification of certain statements herein expressed may be necessary but it is not anticipated that any vital alteration will be occasioned.Within the State of, New South Wales, Captain's Flat ranks second to Broken Hill as a pqtem.tial producer of lead and zinc. In addition, large quantities of iron pyrites are available for the manufacture of sulphuric acid which finds application in the superphosphate industry.The mines are now controlled by an operating company known as Lake George Mines, Ltd., incorporated in New South Wales, the parent organisation being the Lake George Mining Gorporation Ltd., registered in London.Over £600,000 has been spent by the Company in exploration, mine development, surface plant, housing and water 'conservation, while the State' Government constructed a branch railway from Bungendore at a cost of £200,000. The various activities consequent upon these development and construction programmes and the prospect of employment in the industry has led to a rapid increase in the population of the township.The State, generally, has benefited to the extent of a substantial contribution to the relief of the unemployment problem, and it is hoped that reasonable permanency will be assured to some hundreds of workers for many years.

Mining activity in Mexico began in the 16th century when the Spanish realized the mining potential of the new territory. Since that time, mining has evolved into a strong and vital industry for the country. Good professionals in the mining-related fields are fundamental to the growth and improvement of this industry. Since the end of the 18th century, formal education in mining has been available at the University of Guanajuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico. This school created one of the first schools of mines on the North American continent in 1828. In recent times, some other programs have been created at other universities. Universities offering mining related programs Listed here are the seven universities in Mexico that offer mining related degrees. They are the University of Guanajuato, UNAM, the University of Zacatecas, the University of Chihuahua, the University of Sonora, the University of Coahuila and the University of San Luis Potosi. The University of Guanajuato is the only Mexican university that offers graduate studies at the master's level. No PhD programs in mining engineering are offered at any Mexican university. Programs at each university are of different duration. They are: • University of Guanajuato-Five-and-a-half years, divided into five years of classroom instruction and six months in the working place. • University of Zacatecas - Five years of classroom instruction.

Originated and developed in the civil tunneling industry, the Ground Reaction Curve (GRC) has provided a robust methodology for evaluating and designing ground support in both tunnels and underground mining scenarios. This paper presents a preliminary assessment in the utilization of the GRC concept for the evaluation and design of the pillar-support system with respect to overburden stress and displacement. This initial assessment will be based on and backed by past research on this topic. Underground mine instrumentation is planned for a longwall mine in the Appalachian coal field based on the research and findings in this paper to support the postulated hypothesis. INTRODUCTION Since the early 1970’s, the mining industry has evaluated the structural stability of a pillar by dividing an approximated pillar load by an approximated pillar strength. While this design methodology has served the industry well in the past, as modern mining operations continue to develop in more complex geological and geometric conditions coupled with market economics, industry professionals are in dire need of a modified stability assessment approach which considers both the stress condition and material displacements. Within the civil tunneling industry, the GRC approach has been successfully utilized in designing underground support measures that enhance the stability of an underground excavation. Through the incorporation of current industry knowledge and understanding of ground and support behaviors this paper looks to investigate into preliminary assessment for the development of a Modified Support Response Method (MSRM) to further improve the analysis of local and global underground stability. CURRENT PILLAR DESIGN METHODS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS Globally, multiple pillar design methods have been utilized in the design of underground excavations. Each of these methods approaches the calculation of pillar stability a little differently with respect to material properties, underground geometries and stress conditions. Analytical solutions can be used to determine the strength of homogeneous materials like concrete, but not in case of non-homogeneous and non-isotropic mineral deposits in a mine. These equations are often derived using empirical methods. Pillar strength is defined as the maximum resistance of a pillar to axial loading (Brady & Brown, 1985). The strength of mine pillars is typically estimated through indirect methods. In the past, researchers have correlated the strength of a given size and width of a rock specimen to the strength of a mine pillar. The first study on the effect of geometry on rock strength was done by (Bauschiger, 1876) on Swiss sandstone samples. Since then several empirical equations to determine pillar strength had been published by many researchers like (Bunting, 1911), (Griffith & Conner, 1912), (Greenwald, Howarth, & Hartmann, 1939), (Holland & Gaddy, 1957), (Evana, Pomeroy, & Berenbaum, 1961) and (Holland C. , 1964).

The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

By courtesy of the officials of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad, I am permitted to publish the results of an examination made in 1887 and 1888 of' the country west of the Black Hills, and lying between the Black Hills and the foot-hills of the Big Horn Mountains in the northeastern part of Wyoming. With the exception of the country constituting the foot-hills, or the encircling ridge or rim of the Black Hills proper, all of this area is occupied by rocks of Cretaceous age. In the central part of the Black Hills are found the tin-bearing granites, the mica-schists, and gold-bearing slates, already so well known. Surrounding this central area of older rocks (which should be considered as the "Hills" proper) are the attenuated representatives of the Palzeozoic, dipping gently away from the Hills in every direction, overlaid by the gypsum-bearing Mesozoic, which here forms a bold high ridge or rim, completely encircling the Black Hills, and known as the inner ridge. Overlying, and apparently conformable to this, we find the Dakota sandstone, which likewise forms a prominent ridge or rim, known as the first or outer ridge. This is the formation which contains the coal now worked at the mines near Newcastle. It is also the formation in which the best oil-wells have been obtained in the "Stoakdale," or "Beaver," and the " Belle Fourche " oil-districts. Overlying it are the Colorado shales, forming the great plains drained by Beaver creek and the south fork of the Cheyenne river, and extending west to the Belle Fourche, near Donkey creek, where the overlying Fox Hill formation (thin) and the Laramie group, the great lignite-formation, are first seen. The Laramie group occupies the surface from the Belle Fourche at Donkey creek west to the foothills of the Big Horn mountains at Buffalo, an air-line distance of some seventy or eighty miles.

AS a member of the Institute and as the president of the National Coal Association, I come before you today in a dual role. As an Institute mem-ber I welcome the opportunity to make complimentary reference to the growing support which bituminous coal operators are giving to programs looking to the advancement of the engineering profession, and to suggest plans whereby these programs may be enlarged to mutual advantage. As a representative of the bitu-minous industry, it gives me special pleasure to express the appreciation of the industry for the services ren-dered to it by members of your profession. Needless to say, there is a close relationship between the engineer and the coal operator. With increasing frequency and in the interests of the industry, the engineer is becoming more of a factor in the business of producing coal. I need look no further for an out-standing example of this encouraging trend than to Samuel A. Taylor, who not only is a bituminous coal producer but also has risen to such eminence in the engineering profession as to have been chosen the head of this great body of technical men, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. There are many coal operators whom I might mention as having achieved distinction in the engineering world, such as Howard. N. Eavenson, chairman of the .Coal and Coke Committee. And I would be guilty of a serious .oversight if I failed to make reference to Eckley B. Coxe, one of the founders of the Institute in 1871, a prominent anthracite operator and credited with several important inventions. While it is true that a. considerable number of execu-tives of coal-producing companies in this country came up through the engineering ranks. the proportion of mine executives in England, France, and Germany who are graduate engineers is much larger than it is in the United States. In France all members of the staff are engineers and such is the case in Germany up to the owner of the mine. In Germany the owner is not so frequently an engineer as is the rule in France.

COMPA[N]IA Minera de Penoles, S. A., at its Avalos unit operates a lead-zinc concentrator having a capacity of about 600 short tons per day. Lead and zinc concentrates are made by flotation methods. The concentrator is at Terminal de Providencia, in the state of Zacatecas, some 70 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. The Pe[n]oles-Avalos railroad operating between the plant and Estacion Avalos, a distance of 6 miles, makes connections with the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad, which in turn connects with the Nacionales de Mexico at Saltillo. The three railroads are each of different gauge, requiring the transfer of all supplies and concentrates at each junction. The mill operates on company ores, on ores from leased mines, and as a custom mill. The custom business is very small. The lead concentrates are shipped to company smelters at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Torréon, Coahuila. Since the European war, all zinc concentrates have been shipped to the United States. ORE TREATED The major source of ore supply is a group of four mines owned or leased by the company, some three miles south of the mill in the mountains, from which the ore is delivered to the mill by a gravity aerial tramway. Custom ore comes in by rail. The ores occur in chimneys. The upper levels contained oxidized siliceous ores of lead, copper, silver and gold, with varying amounts of zinc. These ores were direct-smelted. In the first two years of operation a good deal of the tailing loss was caused by the oxidized content of the ores milled. Much of the ore in the transition zones between the oxides and sulphides was not mined. The ores now being milled are clean, hard sulphides in a limestone gangue, with only occasional contamination of oxides. The lead and zinc sulphides are of coarse structure and are freed even above flotation sizes. The galena is usually "steel" colored, easily and quickly floated. When there is any oxidation, it is usually on the coarsest crystals. The zinc minerals vary a good deal in color; a resin sphalerite predominates but there are varying shades of brown marmatites. On an average, the zinc sulphides contain 64 per cent zinc. The only common copper mineral is chalcopyrite. Little is known of the occurrence of gold and silver. Waste minerals are mainly limestone and pyrite, both of which are barren. The ores vary from 20 to 35 per cent pyrite. Aspen, the flourishing mountain- and mining-town of Pitkin county, Colorado, is located in the valley of the Roaring Fork, 11 miles above Glenwood springs, where that stream empties its waters into Grand river, a tributary of the Colorado. The Roaring Fork heads on the western slope of the Sawatch range near Grizzly peak, and runs in a general northwesterly direction to its junction with the Grand river. Of its numerous tributaries, Castle creek joins it just below the town of Aspen, the town being built on an extensive flat hounded on the northeast by the Roaring Fork and on the west by Castle creek. The latter heads at the junction of the Sawatch and the Elk mountains and flows northward between the two chains, until it empties into Roaring Fork. Opposite the town of Aspen, Hunter creek, coming westward from the western slope of Mount Massive, joins the Roaring Fork. About a mile north of Aspen, the bed of Hunter creek is at least 300 feet higher than that of the Roaring Fork at Aspen. Hunter creek forms thus, at its mouth, one of the best water-powers in Colorado. A portion of it is now utilized for electric lighting in Aspen, while in the near future, the whole of this magnificent natural power will be applied, through electric transmission, for hoisting, pumping and ventilating at different mines of the district. The mountain opposite the town of Aspen, on the east side of Hunter creek (which near its mouth flows southerly), is called Smuggler mountain, from the famous mine at the foot of it. Sc Eng (Extractive Metallurgy) degree Screening is an industrial process that splits material at a specific cut size into one fraction of particles larger than the cut size and another fraction of particles smaller than the cut size. Particles are vibrated to increase the probability of them being accurately classified and to move the oversize particles off the screen surface. In conventional screening, the screen mesh vibrates with a single frequency and the particles on the screen are all exposed to this same frequency. The Ultimate Screener (see Figure 1) is a new screen technology that imparts multi-frequency vibrations to the screen mesh so that different parts of the screen surface vibrate at different frequencies. The Ultimate Screener incorporates an additional deck that holds the multi frequency adapters as shown by Figure 2. These special adapters can transform single frequency vibrations into multi frequency vibrations. When the screen motors are switched on they begin to vibrate. This vibration is transmitted to the adapters via the body of the machine. The adapters then modify the vibration to have multiple frequencies, which are transmitted to the screen surface via resonating rings.

The slag removed from the reverberatory furnaces of copper smelters contains significant copper values. A serious financial loss is involved, as further recovery operations are not normally carried out. This paper describes the factors affecting physical transport of matte into slag by gas bubbles, and the subsequent entrapment and flotation of matte drops. Three distinct patterns of transport behaviour have been identified from studies of a number of liquid/liquid systems, including liquid metal and liquid matte systems. A theoretical approach is proposed to explain these behaviour patterns, and to predict transport and entrapment behaviour in matte/slag systems. The concepts of "Film Coefficient" (ø) and "Flotation Coefficient" (?) are introduced. The effects of smelting process variables on the physical loss of copper matte in slag are also discussed.

THE subject of electric signals for the despatching off mining cages through shafts has received cousiderable attention recently from various mining companies. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co. has found it necessary to develop a system that is reliable, safe and simple in operation, and easy to repair. The movement of all mine cages or skips is under the direction of a station tender, who rides on the cages when men or supplies are being lowered or raised. When ore is hoisted, he is stationed at a skip pocket for loading and despatching the skips. For the station tender's use, two signal systems are installed in each hoisting compartment, and he is the only employee authorized to use them. One system is known as the "AC" or Station bells, as it is operated from the 110-volt, 60-cycle, power service; the other system, called the "DC" or shafts bells, takes its energy from closed-circuit primary batteries. As a supplement to the two main signals, a buzzer system is installed. The general arrangement is similar to "the main signal, except that there is a mine buzzer at each station. When a signal switch connected into the buzzer system is pulled down, all buzzers are operated, thus notifying the station tender that he is wanted at some particular level. Placed on the station posts, and within easy reach of the men on the cages, are the signal pull switches for the main signals. The station, or "AC," pull switches are furnished with a short rope as shown in Fig. 1, while the shaft, or "DC," pull switches are equipped with ropes that extend down the shaft past the next station. To avoid all confusion in the use of the three signal systems, a standard arrangement has been adopted in all mines for the location of the pull switches. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the pull switch at the various mine stations for the main signal systems, but it does not show the buzzer pull switch; this is fixed to the roof timbers about 25 ft. back from the shaft. If the skip pockets are a considerable distance below the station, a pull switch for each main shaft compartment is connected to the "AC" system and placed at this point. However, if the distance is short, a light cord is attached to the station pull switches and dropped down to the skip pocket.
