Quartz has been of interest in occupational health for years because it can cause silicosis after prolonged exposure. New OSHA regulations (Air Contaminant; Final Rule) list perlite as a nuisance dust. They conclude that perlite is nontoxic when air-borne total particulate concentrations are 15 mg/m3 or below and when quartz content is less than 1% crystalline silica. OSHA has established an 8-hour PEL of 15 mg/m TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz. OSHA has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for respirable perlite. These limits will protect workers from significant risk of eye, skin, or other physical irritation. This regulation is based on a Group 2A classification as a probable carcinogen in humans, at the 0.1% crystalline silica level, by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC 1987a, b). IARC found sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of crystalline silica in animals and limited evidence in humans. Perlite is not listed as a carcinogen by OSHA or the National Toxicology Program.

"AbstractWear of six types of grinding balls was compared with and without corrosion inhibition in grinding Ni-Cu sulphide and hematite ores in laboratory ball mills. Forged steel balls (Rc 60 to 65) and three types of white cast iron balls (Rc 50 to 65) were susceptible to corrosive wear and two types of stainless steel balls [AISI Type 440C (Rc 65) and AISI Type 302 is; 35)] were relatively immune. The relative wear rates of the five types of hard balls (Rc 50 to 65) were dependent on the corrosivity of the ore. Ranking of the hard balls with respect to wear resistance was consistent for the sulphide and hematite ores in the presence of corrosion inhibition, whereas their ranking was different for the two ores in the absence of inhibition.The electrochemical potential of the grinding balls was measured during grinding and was found to be a useful measurement for assessing the susceptibility of an alloy to corrosive wear. Reduction of ball wear for forged steel and white cast irons with corrosion inhibition was concomitant with a shift of ball potential to less active values. Ball potentials in the presence of inhibition were indicative of non-corroding metal surfaces.IntroductionA PREVIOUS STUDY by the authors (1) showed that corrosion inhibitors - sodium nitrite, sodium chromate and sodium metasilicate - reduced wear of forged steel grinding balls by up to 49% in grinding Ni-Cu sulphide ore. Although the mechanism of wear reduction was not elucidated, it was concluded that corrosion must play a significant role in the wear of grinding media. Remark and Wick (2) of Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories have also evaluated corrosion inhibitors for the reduction of metal wear using abrasive and n on- abrasive te sting procedures. Their research was sponsored by 16 companies throughout the world. Preliminary results indicated that anodic inhibitors prevent from one-fourth to one-half of the loss due to corrosion."

Continuous Improvement The Council of the AusIMM should expedite the introduction of a continuous professional education policy along the lines of that to be proposed to you by David Pollard today. The Education and Accreditation Committee must continually review the training needs of the next generations of mining industry professionals. It should continue to demand and encourage the creation of the schools for the training of such people. The AusIMM could even put greater onus upon university researchers to accredit university post graduate degrees.

"The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. Not in all cases are such low recoveries economically unjustifiable, since there is documented evidence (Darnton et al, 1992) that a significant proportion of the gold recovered, at least in the case of base metal ores, would not have reported to the copper or zinc concentrate and received NSR credits."

Underground mining in the gold industry is gaining popularity in Nevada, and with it the use of cemented rockfill is becoming mainstream. Even with today?s high metal prices, however, mining companies are very sensitive to the margins they realize, and are constantly looking for ways to reduce costs or improve efficiencies. Given that the backfill is one of the largest cost centers in underground mining, mines are constantly under pressure to reduce backfill costs. This paper will present an overview of the factors that impact cemented rockfill quality in Nevada mines based on the authors many years of consulting experience. Cemented rockfill quality can be linked directly to binder consumption, hence programs aimed at improving quality generally result in lower binder costs, better performance in the fill (hence less dilution), and improved safety. The paper will conclude with the key elements of a comprehensive program of backfill quality assessments and backfill QA programs. Comparative laboratory and minesite data from a number of operating and proposed mines will be presented.

Fluidized low-temperature carbonization of coal, a recent development, offers a possibility of reducing fuel costs of coal-burning electric ?generating plants. The Research Council of Alberta have built a pilot plant and are conducting a programme to -develop a carbomzation plant for Alberta sub-bituminous coals which will produce char suitable for use as a .boiler fuel, and tar of a potentially high value as a ?chemical raw material. The economies of the process as a whole, and the value of the tar, have yet to be assessed.

The generation of low cost power is but one phase of the TVA program for regional development. During the 36 years since TVA began, growth in its generation of electric power has necessitated a shift from a predominantly hydroelectric power system to a combination steam and hydroelectric system. The addition of steam-electric power plants to TVA's generating system was necessitated by the rapid increase in the traditional and defense demands for electric power in the 80,000-square-mile area served by TVA, the need to firm up the hydroelectric power, and the fact that all available sites for sizeable hydroelectric projects had been developed. At present TVA owns and operates 40 power plants--29 hydroelectric and 11 steam-electric plants. The total generating capacity of the hydroelectric plants is 3,105,430 kw, and the capacity of the steam plants is 13,951,135 kw. This provides a total generating capacity of 17,056,565 kw for the plants operated by TVA. Individual capacity of the 112 hydroelectric units ranges from 10,000 to 67,500 kw, and the individual capacity of the steam-electric units now in operation ranges from 60,000 to 950,000 kw. In addition to this generating capacity, TVA distributes the power from 6 U. S. Army Corps of Engineers hydroelectric plants on the Cumberland River. These plants contribute an additional 725,000 kw. Also, under an agreement with the Aluminum Company of America, TVA directs the stream flows and generation of their 423,715-kw system on Tennessee River tributaries and shares with Alcoa in the increased generation resulting from this coordinated operation.

Edging for starter sheet blanks used in conventional copper refineries has always been problematic for getting the edging to seal and adhere to the titanium material used for the blank so that copper is prevented from plating under the edging and cause undo problems in getting the copper sheets to separate from the blanks. A method was developed at the Amarillo Copper Refinery utilizing an injection molding process that better adheres the edging material to the titanium that makes the harvesting of starter sheets much easier to the point that robots are now used to strip with and which holds up very well to the unforgiving physical nature of the electroplating process. It is believed that this technology could be successfully utilized for permanent cathodes as well. INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting and Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co- products (Marcosson, 1949). Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills and two solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants all in Arizona plus a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas. Figure 1 illustrates how the copper metal comes out of the ground at the mine and ends up as a refined product at the refinery. The copper refinery in Texas is known as the Amarillo Copper Refinery (ACR) and is located in Amarillo, Texas. It was built in 1975 to replace 3 other aging refineries and was designed to produce 550,000 tons (500,000 MT) of refined copper per year using conventional starter sheet technology. At the time it was commissioned it was the largest tankhouse in the world at just under 1/2 miles long under one roof.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.

"This study describes the strain behavior in vertical shaft lining (VSL) embedded in thick soil deposits and its application in assessment of concrete deterioration. The observed strain in VSL continuously decreased companied by a sinusoidal fluctuation due to the influences derived from negative skin friction (NSF) and temperature. The increase in strain increment between peak and trough at each year and compressive strain level as the servicing time continued and VSL depth increased implies that the concrete strength was attenuated, and this attenuation was significantly dependent on the existing compressive strain level in VSL. The reliability of the proposed approach was validated by Schmidt Hammer Technique (SHT) – based concrete strength, and is applicable in concrete assessment and then fracturing prediction of VLSs in thick soil deposits.Concrete strength, Field monitoring, Strain behavior, Vertical shaft liningINTRODUCTIONOver 100 VSLs in Southeastern China subjected to an unpredictable fracturing as shown in Figure1, and there are over 1,000 VSLs embedded in thick alluvium su?ering from challenges of damaging and potential fracturing (Cheng, Yang, Zhou, Li, & Hu, 1993; Zhou, Cui, Lv, Huang, & Chen, 1999; Li & Li,2005). Therefore, a reliable assessment of these VSLs is significant to the normal servicing of mine shafts and the recycle of underground space when these mine shafts were closed.The continuous increasing of NSF induced by the drainage of water–saturated deposits well interpreted such extensive fracturing phenomenon, and it is universally regarded as the governing indicator to determine the VSL stabilization (Cheng et al., 1993; Zhou et al., 1999). Based on this recognition, the fracturing prediction and VSL strengthening according to the field monitoring on hydrogeological characteristics, servicing environments, and mechanical behaviors of VSL were carried out (Zhao, Zhou, Zhong, Zhu, & Liang, 2009; Liang et al., 2009; Xie, Lv, & Wu, 2014). As known, the compressive strain level in VSL and the in–situ strength of VSL concrete were the main factors to perform such fracturing prediction. However, the existing studies in literatures were limited to the strain accumulating or releasing behaviors (Zhao, Zhou, Zhao, Kuang, & Hu, 2017), and lack of considering the VSL concrete strength and its attenuation. In this reported study, the in–situ monitoring data on the strain in typical VSLs and the VSL elevations between 2004 and 2014 were initially analyzed. Then, an observed strain behaviors–based approach was developed to quantitatively evaluate the VSL concrete deterioration."

Y.-I do not care to discuss Mr. Taggart's paper in the light of theory, as that has been very well done by Prof. Bell,1 but I should like to criticize some of his conclusions, in the light of actual operating practice at plants all over the country. 1. Mr. Taggart's first conclusion is that in crushing average ore, the character of the gangue has little effect on the efficiency of the mill. This, I believe, is not in accordance with the usual practice, since in crushing a hard ore the capacity will be much reduced below what it would be with a softer ore, while the power consumed will be practically independent of the character of the ore, being proportional only, to the load of ore and balls in the mill. 2. Mr. Taggart's second criticism is that the Hardinge mill is not suitable for grinding soft, tough material. In answer to this I might mention that the mill is being used for grinding tough, dnctile material, such as metallic aluminum, and also for grinding licorice root. 3. He says that the ball-mill works more efficiently on material of intermediate size, say 1/2 to 3/4 in., than on either coarser or finer feed.. This is true as to coarser feed. For the most efficient work, I believe that a ball-mill should be fed with material not coarser than 1 1/2 in.; it' will handle material up to 3 and even 4 in., but the reduction from 3 or 4 in. to 1 1/2 in. can be done much more cheaply and efficiently by rolls or disk crushers than in the ball-mill. 4. As to Mr. Taggart's fourth conclusion, that a greater ratio of reduction can be expected with feed of an intermediate size than with a coarse feed, I have not enough information to express an opinion. 5. His next conclusion is that steel balls are much more efficient crushing media than pebbles. Steel balls are undoubtedly more efficient for crushing coarse feed. On fine material they are also more efficient as to tons per horsepower crushed to 10-mesh, but on fine material I think it will be found that flint pebbles are cheaper than cast-iron balls, per ton of ore, although there will be a saving in power per ton by using cast iron instead of flint. The increased cost of crushing with cast iron will be due to the higher cost of iron at the present time. 6. Mr. Taggart's sixth conclusion coincides with present practice, that steel balls will grind as fine or finer than pebbles when working on the same feed.

Since 1990, the entire Romanian mining industry has suffered a major restructuring, i.e. technical and economic. The large majority of the remaining active mines are these with a chance for economic comeback. This is also the case for the mines that belong to MINVEST Deva Company; most of the mines are closed, and are waiting to be reclaimed. The authors present the closing procedures of the former copper mining perimeters managed by MINVEST. It is well known that pollutants of concern for the environment must be monitored to obtain reliable information on the quality of ambient conditions and to minimize their impact on the environment. Consequently, the monitoring problems during the closing procedures will be presented.

This paper examines the combination of unit technologies in a minerals beneficiation train, and explores the inter-relationship between energy input and water consumption for a given mineralogy and product recovery, as these are two critical environmental issues which affect the overall viability of many minerals plants. In particular, we review constitutive relationships for each of the sub-processes of comminution, flotation, and tailings dewatering, and suggest how these might be integrated into a unified hybrid model, with particle size distribution as the key design variable. Such a model can then be used to explore the trade-offs between different performance objectives (be these technical, economic or environmental) as part of a multiple-objectives optimisation exercise. In this way, it may become practical to envision situations in which concentrate grade and recovery are sacrificed, marginally, in order to reduce energy demand in comminution, and improve overall water recovery. This becomes more relevant as the industry commits to advancing the sustainable development agenda in the face of the increasing life -cycle costs and impacts of minerals processing operations, coupled to declining ore body grades, and the desire to maximise recovery of minor and trace elements. Some specific observations for copper are offered.

Characterisation of non-plastic segregating tailings presents a number of challenges: the material cannot typically be sampled in an undisturbed state, remoulded samples exhibit different behaviour to undisturbed samples, penetration test interpretation methods suffer from uncertainty in their application to many tailings and the tailings gradation changes considerably over relatively small lateral distances and depth. In addition, the process liquor of many Western Australian tailings contains large quantities of salt and other dissolved solids, which can further complicate laboratory test programs. To provide an insight into the variability at a typical gold tailings facility, four gradations of the material were tested to obtain critical state parameters. Historic surficial tube samples were collated and organised by gradation to establish the range of densities typical after settling and air drying. These were then compared to laboratory-accessible densities. Finally, tube samples were tested in the laboratory to observe if the large-strain material behaviour was consistent with the inferred critical state parameters for similar gradations. Site pore fluid was used in the testing of the tube samples in an attempt to assess if the pore fluid modified the critical state conditions of the material.The tube samples tested all exhibited strongly dilative behaviour in undrained shear. Of the four samples tested, only one exhibited behaviour consistent with the inferred location of the critical state line relevant to the material’s gradation. The reasons for the unexpected behaviour of the other three samples include layering within the samples, the potential influence of large quantities of salt in the pore fluid and likely differences in the gradation of the fines components of samples taken from mid-beach and the decant area.CITATION:Reid, D, 2015. "6xxx-series Al alloys are the most commonly used alloys in the automotive industry as they have an appropriate balance of strength, corrosion resistance and formability. The main strengthening phase in these alloys is the ß’-Mg2Si precipitates. One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series Al alloys, without affecting corrosion and formability, is the use of Sc. The main challenge of using Sc in 6xxx-series lies in the heat treatment, which must be designed to allow for a fine precipitation of both Al3Sc and ß’-Mg2Si. In this work, two model alloys are used, an Al-Sc-Zr and an Al-Mg-Si-Cu-Sc-Zr, to explore the impact of the 6xxx-series key elements (Mg, Si and Cu) on the Al3Sc precipitates. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography are used to investigate the precipitates present in the microstructure after casting. We find that higher Si content results in the formation of dispersoids upon casting. The average composition of these dispersoids is (Al0.8,Si0.2)3 (Sc0.888,Zr0.024,Mg0.08,Cu0.008). A closer look at the solid solution reveals that most of the Sc and Zr is supersaturated after casting even in the presence of Mg, Si and Cu. We discuss the impact of these results on the design of a suitable heat treatment for 6xxx-series alloys with Sc.INTRODUCTION The most common strategy to strengthen aluminum (Al) alloys is by micro-alloying to form a fine distribution of precipitates (Gladman, 1999). Whilst precipitates enhance the strength, this is often done to the detriment of ductility and corrosion performance (Davis, 1999). The 6xxx-series Al alloys are heavily used in the automotive industry as they offer an appropriate balance of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance (W. S. Miller et al., 2000). The strength increment in these alloys comes from the formation of the ß’–Mg2Si and the quaternary Q’ phase (Chakrabarti & Laughlin, 2004; Polmear, St. John, Nie, & Qian, 2017). One opportunity to achieve stronger 6xxx-series alloys, whilst keeping good balance of corrosion resistance and formability, is the use of small additions of scandium (Sc). Sc is one of the most potent strengtheners in Al alloys (Dorin, Ramajayam, Vahid, & Langan, 2018; Røyset & Ryum, 2005). Most of the strengthening benefits from Sc come from the formation of fine Al3Sc dispersoids. The following strengthening mechanisms apply to Sc: 1) Solid solution strengthening, 2) precipitation hardening, 3) inhibiting recrystallization, 4) assisting nucleation of other strengthening phases (Dorin, Ramajayam, Lamb, & Langan, 2017). As compared to other dispersoid phases, Al3Sc dispersoids have good electrochemical compatibility with Al alloys and hence do not affect their corrosion resistance (Cavanaugh, Birbilis, Buchheit, & Bovard, 2007). The coarsening resistance of Al3Sc is often improved by adding zirconium (Zr), as it forms a Zr rich shell around Al3Sc which prevents Sc from moving across the interface."

Laboratory investigations have been made to study the effect of variations in fluid characteristics, gas saturation, water saturation, and water injection rate on oil recovery by water flooding. Three synthetic gas-saturated crude oils having bubble points of 860, 1,540 and 1,885 psi were used as reservoir fluids. Repeated tests were made in which a and pack, saturated with water and synthetic oil, was produced by solution gas drive followed by water flooding at various pressure levels. Oil recovery by solution gas drive and subsequent water injection is shown to vary with the pressure and rate at which the water flood is conducted. The pressure at which optimum flooding conditions exist is shown to be a functiotl of the physical characteristics of the reservoir fluid. For the systems studied, increases in oil recoveries of near 10 per cent were obtained by flooding at the most desirable conditions. Va- riations in initial water saturations gave results similar to those in the literature. INTRODUCTION Most of the waterflooding studies investigating means of improving present exploitation processes have been conducted at low pressures with little effort to simulate reservoir conditions. Holmgren and Morse' performed a waterflooding study at 300 to 500 psi wherein the gas saturation was created by injecting gas, letting dissolved gas evolve from the oil, and then flushing the core with "live" oil until the desired gas saturation was obtained. Their results show increasing oil recoveries with increasing gas saturations. Data presented by Guerrero' and Kennedy, et al, indicate that in some instances water flooding at approximately 500 psi below the original bubble point results in a lower residual oil saturation than is obtained when water flooding above the bubble point. In their work gas saturations were created by primary depletion. By correcting low pressure flooding data for fluid shrinkage, Dyes found that a maximum oil recovery may be obtained by flooding with initial gas saturations of from 7 to 12 per cent. The purpose of this work was to determine the variations in oil recovery caused by initiating a waterflooding program at various stages of primary depletion of a core. This is a part of a more comprehensive study of obtaining criteria for determining when to initiate a pressure maintenance program and what fluids to in-ject. Bruce C. Netschert—It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper consider it necessary to begin with an expression of concern over possible false interpretations of the word "economics." In their preoccupation with the definition of economics, they have adopted a definition of mineral economics which is, to say the least, unduly narrow. Just as the broad field of economics is not confined to a study of the profitability of business concerns, but includes the problems of production, distribution, and consumption as they pertain to society as a whole; so an inclusive definition of mineral economics should not be confined to the determination of the profitability of mineral-producing and processing enterprises, but should include the significance of the unique characteristics of mineral resources as raw materials for the use of society. Such features as the exhaustibility and localized, haphazard occurrence of deposits, the existence of a secondary (scrap) supply, and the increasing cost of operation during the life of a mining enterprise are obviously factors which concern those businesses which are producing mineral raw materials, since they partially determine the profitability of such enterprises. They are also of concern to society as a whole, however, as characteristics of one of the basic elements of the economic system. In the last analysis, the contribution which mineral economics can make as a means of determining and guiding social policy with respect to the production and utilization of mineral resources is perhaps more important than its use as a basis for determining the cost accounting procedure of individual firms. The list of "economic factors peculiar to the industrial minerals" which the authors present is in reality an application of such a broad definition of mineral economics. An inconsistency appears, however, in the inclusion of items 8 and 9 in the list. As this writer sees it, the point in question is: What influences do the characteristics of industrial minerals have on the characteristics and operating procedures of industrial mineral enterprises which are not present in the metallic mineral field? In answering this question with items 8 and 9, Messrs. Ladoo and Stokes do not recognize that there are two distinct types of differences between the two fields of enterprise. There are, on the one hand, important basic economic distinctions due to inherent economic characteristics of industrial minerals which do not pertain to metallic minerals. On the other hand are those characteristics of the industrial mineral enterprises peculiar to them alone, but which are superficial and temporary, in that they may be changed or eliminated at the discretion of the managers of those enterprises. The lack of adequate research and development in industrial mineral production, processing, and marketing (item 8) is not due to an inherent characteristic of industrial minerals. It is true that one may perhaps describe the field of industrial mineral enterprise in terms of such a deficiency, just as one could, until recently, point to a similar lack of research and development in the coal industry; but unless it can be shown that the deficiency has been wholly or partially due to the very nature of industrial minerals themselves it is not an "economic factor peculiar to the industrial minerals" but a temporary characteristic peculiar to the industry. In the writer's opinion, the authors have not demonstrated that the former relationship exists. Similarly, item 9, the "influence of technologic developments," is also not inherently peculiar to industrial minerals. Nowhere in the discussion of this item do the authors mention anything that is not equally applicable to the field of metallic minerals. This is not meant to imply that the specific technologic developments which the authors list are of equal significance in both fields. It does mean that such a statement as, "technological advances together with new consuming areas to provide markets make deposits commercially valuable which once were of no interest" cannot be considered as an argument that technological developments have significance in the field of industrial minerals alone. In considering the problem of stockpiling, the authors note that the stockpiling of nonstrategic materials might be desirable if future wartime needs could exceed domestic production capacity, but dismiss this as hardly adequate to justify such stockpiling. The problem, however, can be stated in broader economic terms, i.e., the real costs (as distinguished from the money costs) of prewar versus wartime production. In other words, it might well be that the labor and capital required to produce a given amount of a certain mineral raw material could be used more efficiently in another industry. In such a case it is obviously advantageous to stockpile the material in prewar times rather than forego the benefits of additional production in another line of endeavor during wartime under conditions which demand the optimum use of all resources, including manpower and capital. Bruce C. Netschert—It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper consider it necessary to begin with an expression of concern over possible false interpretations of the word "economics." In their preoccupation with the definition of economics, they have adopted a definition of mineral economics which is, to say the least, unduly narrow. Just as the broad field of economics is not confined to a study of the profitability of business concerns, but includes the problems of production, distribution, and consumption as they pertain to society as a whole; so an inclusive definition of mineral economics should not be confined to the determination of the profitability of mineral-producing and processing enterprises, but should include the significance of the unique characteristics of mineral resources as raw materials for the use of society. Such features as the exhaustibility and localized, haphazard occurrence of deposits, the existence of a secondary (scrap) supply, and the increasing cost of operation during the life of a mining enterprise are obviously factors which concern those businesses which are producing mineral raw materials, since they partially determine the profitability of such enterprises. They are also of concern to society as a whole, however, as characteristics of one of the basic elements of the economic system. In the last analysis, the contribution which mineral economics can make as a means of determining and guiding social policy with respect to the production and utilization of mineral resources is perhaps more important than its use as a basis for determining the cost accounting procedure of individual firms. The list of "economic factors peculiar to the industrial minerals" which the authors present is in reality an application of such a broad definition of mineral economics. An inconsistency appears, however, in the inclusion of items 8 and 9 in the list. As this writer sees it, the point in question is: What influences do the characteristics of industrial minerals have on the characteristics and operating procedures of industrial mineral enterprises which are not present in the metallic mineral field? IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To mention one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prevalent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base positive statements. To determine the nahcolite and dawsonite content in oil shales, the Bureau of Mines compared X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermal methods, and a previously published method by Smith and Young based on the selective solubility of sodium compounds. The Smith and Young method and a new method based on the weight of carbon dioxide produced by thermal decomposition are recommended for determining nahcolite. X-ray diffraction and the Smith and Young method are recommended for determining dawsonite. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis were useful for identifying other minerals in the samples.
