The demand for mineral raw materials, especially in the major industrialized nations, has grown rapidly during the past three decades. One consequence of this growth has been an increasing reliance by the large industrialized countries upon nondomestic mineral supplies. These mineral supplies, to a large extent, have been developed by capital from the major industrialized countries. Until recently, most foreign mining ventures were either wholly-owned subsidiaries or joint ventures between two or more mining companies. The recent rise of economic nationalism has substantially changed the business climate and parameters under which foreign investors operate. This paper describes some of the underlying reasons for this change and notes how investors have adapted to the new business conditions.

Discussion of the paper of L. A. DELANO, presented at the St. Louis meeting, October, 1917, and printed in Bulletin No. 129, September, 1917, pp. 1267 to 1286. L. A. DELANO.-Since this paper was written, our daily mill tonnage has increased, from 2100 tons to 2700 tons a clay. We now use 11,000 lb. of chrome-steel balls of 2 ½ -in. maximum diameter, for an average crushing capacity of 275 tons per 24 hr., this giving a much higher crushing efficiency. I wish to call attention to two typographical errors in my paper as published. On page 1271, Table 1, the screen analysis of ore at the Bonne Terre mill should be stated in inches instead of mesh. - On page 1272, "the rolls average 185 tons per 24 hr., and have shown by test that 250 tons per hour can be maintained" should, of course, read "250 tons per 24 hours." THE CHAIRMAN (0. M. BILHARZ, Miami, Okla.).-Is the increased mill capacity due to improvement in the re-crushing of middlings or to keeping middlings out of circulation and treating them separately? L. A. DELANO.-AS was shown in Mr. Rabling's paper (Bulletin No. 128, p. 1161) the tonnage was raised by about 400 tons by simply changing the arrangement of screen openings in the jig bed and using punched plate instead of woven-wire screen. Then, by adding a ball-mill, we are taking from the jigs a much larger tonnage of middlings than before or as much as the ball-mill will crush. By sending the ball-mill product to tables and flotation, the jig capacity for original ore is increased. CHAIRMAN BILHARZ.-In your opinion, the satisfactory operation of a Hancock jig on a given ore requires adjustment of the length of the different screens and careful selection of screen openings? L. A. DELANO.-I think it does. In order to decide what screen openings to use on the jigs, we did a great deal of experimental work, making screen analyses of the various hutch products, and then hand-sorting the galena, middlings and chat from each size screen to determine the percentage of galena in each. Then adjusting our jig screens, we gradually worked the process up to a very efficient basis. " Oil shale contains little or no oil as such , but it contains an organic material from which oil may be produced by destructive distillation" . This statement , or others conveying the same meaning, appears in many popular and techni cal articles on oil shale . It is based on the belief that the ordinary solvents of petroleum have but little action on the organic substances contained in oil- yielding shales , although on distillation these same shales may yield upwards of 50 gallons of crude shale oil per ton . A 50 - gallon shale thus yields by distillation 18.73 per cent of its weight as oil ( assuming the specific gravity of the oil to be 0.900 ) , although only a relatively small part of this can be recovered by extraction with such solvents as chloroform , carbon tetrachloride , and the like . In the course of certain experiments designed to determine the solubilities of different shales after they had begun to yield oil by distillation , it was found desirable to determine the quantity dissolved from certain unheated shales by various solvents , at or near the boiling points of these solvents . The method used and results obtained are presented below. These experiments were made in connection with the oil - shale investigations being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the States of Colorado and Utah .

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

The DEEPMINE Collaborative Research Programme was established to create the technological and human resources platform that would make it possible to mine gold safely and profitably at depths of 3 to 5 km. The DEEPMINE Programme has four goals: to acquire knowledge of and develop appropriate technology for new ultra-deep level mines, to stimulate education and training, to establish a culture of innovation, and to encourage rapid technology transfer and implementation. The research programme was launched in July1998 and will be completed in March 2002, with the final year focusing on the transfer of knowledge to the industrial partners. DEEPMINE represents a new model for conducting mining research: it is driven by industry needs; emphasizes collaboration between industrial partners, research organizations and tertiary education institutions; and has a novel joint-funding mechanism. DEEPMINE has employed a range of vehicles to transfer knowledge to its industrial partners. Novel aspects include: (a) electronic publication of Summary Reports and Guideline Handbooks that seek to consolidate the huge body of knowledge comprehensively and concisely, (b) a series of DEEPMINE Schools designed to enable industry practitioners to apply the knowledge to their current work situation, and (c) Consultancy Reviews, where DEEPMINE specialists seek to apply knowledge to specific real problems on mines.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

Rock fragmentation has been a concern in hard-rock mining for the mining industry. Rock fragmentation distribution is an important index to measure the blasting effect. It not only affects the cost of drilling and blasting, but also affects the efficiency of subsequent operations, such as loading, transportation and secondary crushing.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to IS0 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

All parameters influencing the decision for selection of a suitable extraction method were first selected as the base of this study. Then these parameters were categorized in two main groups. The first group of the parameters includes ?geomechanical and inherent characteristics of the dimension stones? such as hardness, RQD, compressive strength, joints plane orientation and spacing, and water content. The second group was named ?technical and economical parameters associated with the investor?s objectives? like for example extraction capacity (production rate), blocks recovery, mechanization, capital investment and operational costs. Finally, the influences of all mentioned parameters on the selection of the most applicable extraction methods have been assessed and discussed.

In this work the equilibrium temperature-composition phase diagrams of the Si-O2 system were calculated using Thermo-Calc software in the temperature range 500–3000 K. Constituents of stable phases were obtained, and the amounts of certain phases where investigated with the variations in the composition of oxygen and temperature. It is found that quartz with silicon represent a stable phase in the temperature range 500–1150 K, while tridymite with silicon represent a stable phase in the temperature range 1150–1700 K. A liquid phase is found besides tridymite in the temperature range 1700–1750 K, and a stable phase of cristobalite with liquid appears in the temperature range 1750–2000. The maximum amounts of quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite are found at oxygen mole percent of 67.7%.

Roping in hydrocyclones is a well-known phenomenon in mining and mineral industries which put serious restrictions on their continuous and maintenance free operation. Roping is mostly observed in association with high underflow solid concentrations which can be attributed to higher fraction of solids reporting to the underflow or the feed solid concentration itself being higher. This paper proposes a newly designed spigot with a truncated conical geometry which can allow for a rope-free discharge at higher feed solid concentrations. The experimental observations revealed that in the operation of a 50.8-mm-diameter hydrocyclone, roping ensued at 10% to 12.5% (wt%) feed solid concentration depending on feed inlet pressure for the cylindrical spigot, whereas with the modified spigot, rope free discharge was attained even at 25% (wt%) feed solid concentration.

Economics and environmental considerations along with the increasing demand of hydrogen encourage development of novel technologies such as plasma processing of hydrocarbons and thermal cracking of natural gas. Plasma discharges, either in thermal or non-thermal regimes are expected to allow low temperature and fuel flexible on-site hydrogen generation. The main drawback of thermal plasma reformers is the high-energy consumption resulting from high-temperature operation. On the other hand, non-thermal plasma, generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), is able to simulate the chemical reactions employing much lower energies than those required by thermal treatment processes. The non-thermal plasma process allows for instance, a direct conversion of methane into hydrogen and carbon black with no CO2 release. The focus of this research was on the GHG-free method of H2 generation in compact non-thermal plasma reactors using low, medium and high permittivity dielectric ceramics. A stable, non-thermal plasma was generated by placing a dielectric ceramic between two electrodes with a 25 thou gap and applying an alternating current of 1-5kHz and voltages of 4-8kV. In order to ensure energetic efficient plasmas, experiments were conducted to analyze the behaviour of different permittivity ceramics. It was found that the dielectric properties of a ceramic, when used in a DBD reactor, have a strong influence on the discharge characteristics, which in turn influence the power consumption. Higher dielectric constant resulted in higher conversion rates of methane (higher yield of hydrogen and carbon). At the same time, the mechanical properties of the dielectric material, which are closely associated with its processability, influenced its resistance to electron bombardment, as well as thermal and mechanical damage. Therefore a reliable ceramic should have good dielectric properties, in addition to good thermo-mechanical stability.

"A numerical procedure based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is developed for rock blasting phenomena involving multiple intersecting joints. In this procedure, an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model has been applied in the framework of SPH to simulate yielding response of the surrounding rock medium. In this paper, a square shape rock medium with centrally located emulsion explosive in a borehole is numerically blasted with and without the presence of two diagonal rock joints. The model is simulated by assuming all four sides of the rock medium as free surfaces. The paper elaborates the propagation of stress wave, expansion dynamics of gaseous products, and development of fracture, fragmentation of the medium and dissipation of energy due to damage.INTRODUCTIONDamage prediction of rock mass and its mean fragmentation size are of important to design blast parameters for a given explosive. Current blasting practice solely depends on empirical relationships between fragmentation sizes to those blast design parameters while mathematical descriptions of the physical laws governing the process of rock blasting are limited. A constitutive relationship based on properties of explosives and rock mass is of special interest because of its capabilities in describing the key features of rock fracture and fragmentation, resulting in understanding of the physical process involved in rock blasting. It is well known that blast-induced damage and fragmentation of rock mass occur due to detonation induced stress wave and product gas driven fracture propagation. Nevertheless, the fundamental mechanism of the failure process and the behavior of rock characteristics under these two different loading are not well understood in many cases, which are closely related to growth of fractures and interaction of cracks under different loading conditions.Continuum damage mechanics is considered to be appropriate to describe the failure process under such high-amplitude stress wave. Based on this approach, several theoretical models have been developed to analyze the dynamic damage of brittle material such as rock and concrete with microstructure (Chen, 1999; Taylor et al., 1986; Wu et al., 2004; Yazdchi et al., 1996). These models are mostly based on the theory of damage mechanics or fracture mechanics with some statistical treatment to incorporate random distribution of microcracks. In the application of fracture mechanics theory, sometimes it is difficult to estimate the micromechanical parameters such as crack density and fracture toughness in different modes. In this study, damage in rock material is evaluated according to the earlier model developed by Grady and Kipp (1980), which is a fracture model coupled with a material description for stress wave propagation to predict quantitatively fracture and fragmentation under explosive loading conditions."

El presente texto señala la mineralización y zoneamiento en el distrito minero de Colquijirca. En ese sentido, los zoneamientos, tanto de mineralización como alteración para los tres yacimientos (Gregorio, Colquijirca y Marcapunta) de dicha zona, apoyan la hipótesis de que estos se han formado a partir de un mismo sistema hidrotermal y que las mineralizaciones de Colquijirca y San Gregorio, se originaron por procesos de reemplazamiento polimetálico. De forma, que el Complejo de Volcánico de Marcapunta, centro de la actividad hidrotermal, presenta dos tipos de mineralizaciones distinguibles en tiempo y espacio. La primera mineralización de plata y oro se encuentra en los cuerpos de vuggy silica desarrollados en rocas volcánicas y la segunda, está relacionada a cuerpos de enargita-pirita (Cu±Au, Ag) que alcanzan su máximo desarrollo en sedimentos de la Formación Calera. Asimismo otros trabajos, señalan que la plata se encuentra asociada al cobre, así como también al zinc-plomo y los valores más altos de plata se encuentran en la zona de transición.

"INTRODUCTION Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils 4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal—tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 60 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin—free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin—free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water—soluble sulphonic acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiatingbetween cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins). Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons,It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings."

The United States Bureau of lanes, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the problem of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. Numerous data on gas flow through pipe lines under many conditions of operation have been obtained by carefully conducted tests, and these data, together with all other available information, have been analyzed Carefully to secure practical facts for the use of operators in designing pipe lines and determining the effects of different operating conditions on pipe-line capacities. The first procedure in initiating this problem was to review, compile, and analyze all of the existing data on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines. Actual data applicable to pipe and operating conditions normally used in the transmission of natural gas were meager, and the several pipe line flow formulas developed by different investigators gave widely varying results when applied to problems of pipe-line design. Therefore, further experimental work under conditions comparable to those found in transmitting natural gas was essential before any definite recommendations could be made. The problem, as originally planned, included flow tests on pipe lines in operation, and in each test the measured delivery vas to be compared with the delivery calculated from several common pipe line flow formulas.

The existence of mineralized ground in the area near Lake Chelan has been known since 1887, when Major A. B. Rogers, a locating engineer for the Great Northern Railway, came up Lake Chelan to Railroad Creek in search of a pass over the Cascade Mountains. The steep mountainsides near the crest of the Cascades proved too difficult for railroad construction, and the project was abandoned. Upon his return to Seattle, Major Rogers apparently told his friends, the Denny family, about the large, red, oxidized patches he had seen on the valley walls along Railroad Creek. The Dennys, being true pioneers in spirit, grubstaked J. H. Holden to explore the area and to stake any promising mining ground, and thus began the chain of events that culminated in the construction of the plant that is now known as the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Company. Holden staked the first group of claims in 1892. Soon afterward, A. H. Murdock, who was then a storekeeper in Chelan, and who is still living at Waterville, and his partner, W. P. Robinson, staked adjacent ground. These two groups of claims formed a substantial part of the mining property being worked today. During the period from the original staking in 1892 up to 1928, when the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co. optioned the property, many attempts were made to bring the property into production, through the formation of several stock companies and by examination and testing by engineers from several well-known mining companies. Although the Britannia organization optioned the property in 1928, not much was done until 1930, when a subsidiary was formed—the Chelan Copper Mining Co.—to explore further the possibilities of the ground. Some work was done during the next few years, but it was not until March 1937 that the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. took over with a program of "full speed ahead," and active development of the mine and construction of the complete plant was begun, including docks, tug and barges, 54 miles of power line, 11 miles of road, mill, shop buildings and complete camp. Production began in April 1938, and has continued without interruption, except for regular change days and holidays and a six-weeks strike in 1939. This interval of time has seen the gradual evolution of a mine and mill originally planned for a rate of 1000 tons per day into a compact operation that last year averaged 2264 tons per operating day. This operation, although rather small when compared with the large copper producers of the Southwest, is important to the state of Washington for several reasons: It has provided employment for several hundred people continuously since construction days in 1937; it has helped materially in the war effort, through production of vital copper and zinc, without which no war can be won; and last, but not least, it has conclusively refuted the old pessimistic arguments that a successful mine would never be found in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The effect of hydrostatic pressure upon the austenite start temperature of a commercial Fe-28.4 at. pct Ni-0.5 at. pct C alloy has been determined. For pressures to 20 kbar, the austenite start temperature decreased from its atmospheric pressure value of 380°C at the rate of about 4°C per kbar. These data are analyzed by two different thermodynamic approaches; first, considering the transformation as an isothermal process, and second, considering the transformation as an isentropic process. It was found that both these approaches fit the experimental data equally well. The effect of hydrostatic pressure upon the austenite start temperature is best described by considering the mechanical work done during the transformation as that work obtained by multiplying the applied pressure with the gross volume change of the transformation. It is widely recognized1 that strain has an important effect on the initiation of martensitic transformations.* For example, the martensite start tempera- *In this paper, use of the term martensitic transformation implies the reversal of martensite to austenite as wen as the formation of martensite from austenite. ture, M,, may be increased by plastic deformation. Similarly, plastic deformation is observed to lower the austenite start temperature, A,. The effect of uniaxial stress on the M, of iron-nickel alloys has been studied by Kulin, Cohen, and Averbach.2 They found that the martensite start temperature was significantly changed by stresses well within the elastic region. Moreover, the effect of tensile and compres-sive stresses differed. These effects were explained in terms of the interaction of the applied stress with both the dilational and shear components of the transformation strain. The magnitudes of the influence of uniaxial tension, compression and hydrostatic pressure on Ms were measured in 30 pct Ni 70 pct Fe by Pate1 and Cohen.3 Their thermodynamic calculations and similar calculations by Fisher and Turnbull4 predicted the experimental results when the transformation was assumed to occur isothermally at some fixed driving force. This driving force was assumed to be supplied by a combination of the chemical free energy difference between the austenitic and martensitic phases and the work performed during transformation by the applied stress. More recently, Russell and winchel15 reported the effect of rapidly applied shear stress on the reversal of martensite to austenite in iron-nickel-carbon alloys. They performed a thermodynamic analysis of this transformation based upon the assumption that the re- versal occurred adiabatically. They concluded that the applied shear stress did not significantly interact with the transformation strain and thus did not assist in inducing the reversal. Rather they concluded that the reversal was effected by localized strain heating which resulted from the gross local shear deformation of the experiment. In either the adiabatic or isothermal analysis it is necessary to compute the work performed by the interaction of the applied stress and the transformation strains. In the case of hydrostatic pressure this interaction has been treated by two different methods. In either case the applied pressure is assumed to remain constant during the transformation. In one treatment the applied pressure is assumed to interact directly with the dilatational strain associated with the formation of an individual martensite plate.3'4 This local strain has been measured at atmospheric pressure in iron-nickel alloys by Machlin and Cohen.6 In the above treatment this local strain is assumed invariant with temperature and pressure changes. In the other treatment the applied pressure is assumed to interact with the gross volume change of the transformation.7,8 The usefulness of this latter treatment has been demonstrated by Kaufman, Leyenaar, and Harvey7 who calculated the effects of pressure upon the martensite and austenite start temperatures of Fe-10 at. pct Ni and Fe-25 at. pct Ni alloys. Excellent agreement was obtained between their calculations and their experimental data on an Fe-9.5 at. pct Ni alloy. However, this treatment suffers from the fact that the data required to calculate the volume change of the transformation (i.e., the initial specific volumes, the thermal expansion and compressibility data for both the austenitic and martensitic phases) is, in general, not available for any material except pure iron. Thus the calculations of Kaufman et al.7 were necessarily performed by assuming that the volume change of the martensitic transformation in the iron-nickel alloys was that same volume change occurring during the a-? transformation in pure iron. While this approximation may suffice for very dilute alloys it is likely to be inaccurate in high nickel alloys. We have performed measurements of the effect of hydrostatic pressure to 20 kbar on the A, temperature of an Fe-28.4 at. pct Ni-0.5 at. pct C alloy. The composition is similar to the alloy used by Pate1 and Cohen3 to determine the effect of pressure upon the M, temperature. The present measurements permit calculation of the interaction between the applied pressure and the transformation strain. Additionally, measurements have been made which allow precise determination of the gross volume change of the transformation. The data allow direct comparison between the alternate hypotheses of the interaction between the applied pressure and a dilatational transformation strain characterized by either the formation

As is generally understood, the word geophysics means literally ?the physics of the Earth? and the science of geophysics is therefore that which treats of the study and measurements of the various physical properties of the Earth. The broad and general study of the elastic, the gravimetric. or the magnetic properties of the Earth as a whole belongs to the general science of geophysics. The detailed application of this science to rocks of shallow depth and in small areas for the purposes of ascertaining data on their character and structural attitude gave rise to the present well-known science of ?applied geophysics.? Since the discovery of enormous new quantities of oil, gas, and sulphur has been by far and wide the principal benefaction of geo-physics in the United States, this paper will refer only to geophysical methods employed in the search for these particular minerals. The application of methods and appliances originally used for geophysical research to the solution of the practical problems of finding new oil-fields, plus the counterflow or new and highly refined techniques and Instruments from the company and consulting geophysical research laboratories and into non-economic geophysical research, has provided another case of that gen-eral cycle of events which is familiar to all scientists. That this closed-circuit flow or scientific current has been tremendously important to the whole science of geophysics is probably well known to all members of this audience, but the gen-eral status of the exploratory geophysical arts as now used In the search for new oil-fields, the scales on which different methods are being used, the magnitude of the costs involved, and the far greater magnitude of the practical results achieved may not necessarily have come so directly to your attention. It is, I understand, for this reason that this paper has been sug-gested, and I shall seek to provide the information requested by using as case-illustrations those changes in the oil-reserve picture for the United States as a whole, and for the Gulf Coast, California, and Illinois Basin regions in particular, which have occurred in the period of the past 17 years, during which time oil-field discoveries have proceeded at a rate which served to build up known and readily-available (or proven) oil supplies to a reasonable figure, and have dispelled the fears of a serious oil shortage during any period for which valid fore-casts can be made. Not that geophysical-prospecting methods have alone been responsible for this transformation, but they have an indispensable and leading part in the picture of exploration and production-to which geophysics, geology, engineering, and general technical progress have jointly made contribution. So far as the United States as a whole is concerned, its total proven, probable, and possible oil reserves (discoverable and recoverable by then-known methods) were estimated at about nine billion barrels in 1920, whereas proven reserves alone are now com-puted at about 16 billion. In 1920 the driller in ?wild-cat? territory was faced with the knowledge that for every new oil-field opened by a successful well, from 20 to 100 unsuccessful wells would have to be drilled and, in some territories, that the chances for a discovery were really less than one in 100 for new drilling, in contrast to which may be cited the record for the past year in parts of Louisiana where the 67 wells drilled opened 16 new oil-fields, that is to say, where the score of hits to misses was increased to approximately one out of four.

"Underground mines have always been an integral part of the limestone industry. However, beginning in the 1990s, the number of underground limestone mines has increased for many reasons including• Stripping ratios at surface quarries have become uneconomic.• Existing surface quarries have reached the mineral boundaries, and the remaining stone reserves are underground.• Surface access to the entirety of the limestone reserve is limited by development or infrastructure.• The once-rural setting of the surface quarry is now surrounded by subdivisions and development. An underground mine is less intrusive and takes the mining operation out of the public eye.• For larger markets, an underground mine enables year-round production without the sequence of overburden stripping in the winter to expose mineable stone for summer production. This is common at many surface quarries.Multiple-level operations are a natural extension of the decision to mine underground. Most limestone reserves, for example, the Tyrone-Oregon-Camp Nelson, Hermitage-CartersLebanon- Ridley, and Salem Limestones, are sufficiently thick to accommodate multiple levels. Multiple-level mines should be planned by considering each level separately and then integrating the individual levels into a larger mine plan. Failure to plan all the levels of a multiple-level mine in concert can result in ground control (back, pillar, floor, and inter-level sill pillar) problems attributable to stress transfer and interaction between the levels or the necessity to leave a thicker sill pillar between adjacent levels.Multiple-level mine planning begins with geology. Once the upper level back horizon is identified, the geology, rock strength, and physical properties in each level are used to• identify the optimal back horizon• quantify whether back support is required and, if so, the type, spacing, and length of the back support• determine the pillar centers• determine the total mining height, including floor shots"
