This paper will present a series of examples drawn for a number of Australian and international mining companies showing their recent attempts at optimisation of capital. The results will be compared, contrasted and discussed in the light of six factors that are considered crucial to any analysis of this subject. The factors are: ò the market availability of capital ò the corporate strategy and performance ò the capital structure appropriate to the corporate positioning within the industry ò the parties to the optimisation equation ò the measurement of success of optimisation The factors above are not mutually exclusive and are generally interdependent so their order above is of little consequence. Other papers presented at this conference will dwell in more depth on all these factors, therefore this paper shall focus only on the key elements of each factor. By way of summary this paper will also address the issue of the longevity of optimisation - is it temporary or long term.

The material described below was made at Furnace No. 2, Longdale, Va., Oct. 28, 1907, during a sudden derangement of working, in the course of which the furnace became entirely bridged over and for some time no solid material whatever descended into the hearth. This caused the hearth to become so completely emptied that, at the tuyere-level, a pricker put in at one tuyere could be seen by looking in at the opposite one. The tap-hole was opened and the iron got out with some difficulty. It ran sluggishly, throwing many sparks, but was not too thick to run into the chill-molds. Naturally, the product was assumed to be white iron, which is almost always produced under similar circumstances; but on removal front the molds it proved to be very strong and tough, although full of blow-holes. Most of these blow-holes bad bright, unoxidized walls. The iron could be drilled by using a "special steel" drill, the drillings curling up similarly to those of steel. An analysis by P. W. Shimer of this unusual product gave: Si, 0.019; P, 0.228; S, 0,39; Mn, 0.042; C, 2.366; and graphite, 0:000 per cent. A cast of iron made just before the disturbance contained P, 0.98, and Mn, 1 per cent. The peculiar product seems to have been decarburized in the hearth and, at the same time, to have lost much phosphorus and manganese, either by the action of the blast in the empty hearth, or, more probably, by. contact with the cinder rich in iron which was formed at the time. Unfortunately, no specimen of the cinder was preserved, so its composition cannot be given. Copper powder generated during the treatment of electro-metallurgical bleeds by reactive electro- dialysis (RED) had totally reduced the content of ferric ions in acidic synthetic electrolytes (Cu (II)- Fe (III) – H2SO4). In batch and columnar experiments 100% of the ferric ions were reduced to ferrous ions with an extremely high kinetics. A preliminary conceptual design for reducing ferric ions based on an integrate RED- Column for treatment of electro-winning bleed system is discussed. This system is able to recover simultaneously sulfuric acid and copper powder, which will reduce ferric ions. INTRODUCTION It is well known the negative effect of ferric ions in the copper electro-winning process. The increase of ferric content in the electrolyte reduces the current efficiency, i.e., there is an increase in the energy consumption, and changes the surface morphology of the copper deposit (Das, Gopala & Krishna, 1996; Vargas & Parra, 2013). The increase of the specific energy consumption due to the loss of current efficiency occurs by the reduction reaction of ferric to ferrous ions in the cathode, at the anode the ferrous ions are slowly oxidized to ferric ions (Shaw, Dreisinger, Lancaster, Richmond & Tomlinson, 2004). To control the level of iron in the electrolyte, bleeds are needed; this bleed electrolyte containing copper, sulfuric acid, cobalt, iron and other impurities normally is waster, which increased the production cost of the plant (Milbourne, 2002; Mckevitt & Dreisinger, 2009). Then, permanent efforts oriented to treat those bleeds to avoid losses of valuables components are made; among them are use ion exchange resins (Shaw et al., 2004; Mackevitt et al., 2009), chemical precipitation (Izadi, Mohebbi, Amiri & Izadi, 2017) and electrodialysis (Cortés, Ipinza & Ibáñez, 2013). The last one allows to the simultaneous recovery of sulfuric acid and copper powder. If one of the valuables obtained by treating the bleed can be used to reduce ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte could be an important asset. This issue at laboratory scale is reported in this work, the use of copper powder, generated by reactive electro-dialysis when treating synthetic acidic electro-metallurgical bleeds, for reducing ferric ions in acidic electrolytes.

Anthracite barley is considerably cheaper than rice. Its use, therefore, is attractive from a cost standpoint, - but its smaller size (through 3/16 inch over 3/32 inch round-mesh screen) makes it more difficult to use on some equipment when fairly high combustion rates are necessary to carry plant loads. Tests wore made in one plant to determine the performance of rice and various types of barley on a chain-grate stoker in a two-arch refractory furnace. In general, the efficiency and capacity increased with increased fuel size and volatile content. This performance is presented in tabular and curve form, together with a short review of the ignition and burning process on chain-grate stokers and a discussion of the operating procedures and limitations during the tests. In this particular installation, higher combustion rates and efficiencies could have been obtained with barley if the grate links had been designed for more uniform air flow through the grate surface. Careful maintenance and operation are particularly necessary for satisfactory results with barley on equipment not especially designed for its use.

It is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed. The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Mina Maria is a high-grade, underground copper mine located in the Cananea district of Sonora, Mexico. The ore body is a massive sulfide breccia located in mountainous terrain. A major highway and an electric transmission line pass directly over the near-surface ore body. The mine is operated by Minera Maria SA de CV, a joint venture company that is 51 % owned by Empresas Frisco SA de CV and 49% by Cominco Resources International Ltd. Empresas Frisco is the operating partner. Production began in October 1990. The mining method used is undercut and fill. A continuous miner and a single-boom, hydraulic jumbo mine the ore. Backfill is a weakly cemented sand-gravel mixture that is pneumatically placed. The ore is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation. The Maria deposit is located about 40 km (25 miles) south of the Sonora-Arizona border and 11km (7 miles) northwest the city of Cananea and the Cananea Mine. The mine portal, at an elevation of 1780m (5840 ft), is on the east side of an important drainage divide. The mill site is situated about 800 m (2625 ft) northwest of the mine on the northwest side of the drainage divide where the drainage is more favorable. Its elevation is 1860 m (6100 ft) (Fig. 1).

Stillwater Mining Company has an extensive history with tunnel boring machines (TBM) at the Stillwater and East Boulder underground PGM mines in Montana. The first use of a TBM was a 4 m (13 ft) diameter main beam unit at the Stillwater mine starting in 1988, where 6.4 km (4 mi) of tunnels were driven parallel to the J-M Reef orebody on four different levels. TBM?s were central to the development of the East Boulder Mine as two 4.6 m (15 ft) TBM?s drove two 5,639 m (18,500 ft) parallel tunnels to access the J-M Reef; one of these units is still in service driving a 2,591 m (8,500 ft) access West of the East Boulder mine for the Graham Creek project. For the Blitz Project, a 5.5 m (18 ft) diameter main beam unit will be utilized to drive a 6,858 m (22,500 ft) ventilation and rail haulage level East of the Stillwater mine. TBM?s have been preferred method for developing new mines and sections of the J-M reef as the geometry and geology of the Stillwater Complex allow for faster development compared to conventional methods.

Differences exist between public perception of construction blasting and quarry blasting. In general, people are able to tolerate short term inconveniences much better than long term ones. The paper focuses on the public perception of quarry blasting in St. Charles County, MO. This expanding urban environment has seen new legislation targeting preexisting quarry operations that have been in place for many years. A survey was made comprising interviews conducted to gauge perceptions of persons with varying demographics. Interviews covered topics involved with quarry blasting and its reporting methods. The purpose of the interviews was to determine public perception of blasting and how best to report results of vibration measurements. The use of different, less technically complicated measurement scales for vibration and airblast was considered as an alternative reporting system. The question for the industry is, “Has our past haste in adopting complex scientific scales and units been detrimental to us?” In other words, are we reporting the correct things? For airblast, the decibel scale was evaluated against millibar in the public eye. Peak Particle Velocity was also compared to that for displacement. Current legislation in the county is based on complaint levels rather than damage criteria. The complaints most likely not only come from ignorance to the affects of blasting on structures, but also sparse understanding of the units used to report these affects. The past practice of treading softly as an industry has been proven to be a poor choice, and education of the public as well as lawmakers on all levels is necessary. The Mississippi Valley Chapter of ISEE has begun to conduct seminars to this end. One educational seminar has taken place for officials and lawmakers in the St. Louis area, and others are in the planning stages. The focus of this paper is to gauge perception of the damage criteria reported today, and locate focal points for future education of the public in rapidly expanding suburban environments.

Education and Training for the minerals industry has been identified as one of the key priorities by the AusIMM and many closely related groups. The AusIMM Education Taskforce has been engaged, through a visioning exercise, in evaluating what minerals education and training should look like by 2025. A common recurring theme is that for minerals education and training to be efficient and effective into the future, it needs to be comprehensive and inclusive. Some previous attempts to achieve efficiency and effectiveness have had limited success, mainly due to approaching the issues involved from a narrow, singular perspective. This paper outlines that the achievement of the desired outcome may require an approach that parallels the same techniques that are used for multi-dimensional mine planning, treating tertiary minerals education and training in a similar way to the planning involved for a complex orebody. Just as efficient and effective mine planning requires engagement and understanding of many factors, so too does engagement with tertiary minerals education and training. The major factors that need to be considered are outlined in the paper, including: levels of tertiary education and training; Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), Levels 1 to 13: systems of minerals education and training, such as higher education, (mainly universities), industry/professional associations and licencing requirements, vocational education, (mainly TAFE) and workplace programs; types of minerals or mining methods involved; volume of delivery; stage in the flow sheet, (geology, mining, beneficiation, extraction, refining). For comprehensive mine planning there is the need to develop links or roadways and openings between different levels of a mine. Similarly, to achieve a comprehensive tertiary minerals education and training model, there is a need to develop pathways, recognition and credit transfer between the various levels and components of minerals tertiary education and training.

In 1937 the employees of the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd.. at Timmins. Ont., Canada, approached organized medicine for a plan to provide themselves and their families with a complete medical service including hospitalization. This approach was made because of two conditions: (1) the necessity for some organization whereby contributions could be made in instalments to offset the sudden and large expense connected with illness for which the average employee is not prepared, and (2) the need for a more cohesive quality of service to replace a contract practice then in vogue, which did not take care of the employee's family or dependents. In different parts of the United States and Canada similar plans were in force, not only for employed groups but for numbers of people in circumscribed areas. In Europe different countries had adopted various forms of health insurance plans. It then was no surprise that these employees as a group should ask for some similar plan. With the cooperation of the management, a plan was instituted. The plan has one object only—the provision of medical services, including the accessory services such as hospitaliza-tion, X-rays, nursing, and necessary drugs and medicines. It is not concerned with cash benefits, sickness and accident payments, or any form of monetary return as the result of illness, but is simply an organization to provide medical services and pay for them from a central fund. It is a nonprofit organization and the only shareholders are the employees and their families who contribute and who in turn receive services. The Hollinger plan is limited to the employees of the Hollinger mine, who live in Timmins and the immediate vicinity. At first, the membership was voluntary. In the third year, it was made a condition of employment, with the proviso that at the end of any Association financial year an employee may withdraw if he wishes to do so. After withdrawal, he cannot again become a member until the end of the next Association year, and then only by the payment of the back dues. This step was taken to ensure continuity, and to prevent employees from withdrawing when well and reentering when faced with impending illness or operations. The employee himself is subject to medical examination on application for employment, and if accepted is subject to further examination by a specialist in chest diseases under the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. Thus it is possible to exclude those who have heart disease, tuberculosis, or other disabling conditions when first employed. Wives and families of employees are not subject to medical examination but other dependents of an employee—mother, father, or other relative—who are declared by the employee to be wholly dependent upon him must be examined. Fox the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wettable plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to retreat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both by-product coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to l00 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands 1 in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within ±0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the fine sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to 0. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼ -in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

Troy Resources NL acquired a 70 per cent interest in the Mina Sertpo gold project in Goißs State, Brazil, in 2001 following a successful bid for the highly competitive international tender of a tenement package put out by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The Sertpo deposit is located on cleared grazing land 380 km west of Brasilia and is 30 per cent owned by Amazonia Mineracao Ltda, a private Brazilian company. It is a small high grade open-pittable orebody with a measured and indicated resource of 108 000 tonnes at a grade of 49.7 g/t for 172 500 ounces using a 2.0 g/t cut-off. Troy undertook the project management and development of the project while Amazonia managed the exploration activities and provided other services as required. The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, scouring the world to locate an available and suitable second-hand plant, and arranging shipping to andreconstruction in Brazil.

Ore sorting is a technology that is increasingly used to process primary raw materials. Timeconsuming and expensive empirical state-of-the-art test work is carried out to assess whether the use of ore sorting for the enrichment of a particular ore makes technical and economic sense. With the innovative simulation-based approach presented here, it is possible to direct the selection of a suitable sensor based on quantitative mineralogical and textural data, thus avoiding much of the empirical studies. Required data can be collected quickly and cost-effectively using available methods of automated mineralogy. The obtained parameters such as mineral grain size distribution, modal mineralogy, mineral area and mineral density distribution have been utilised in this study to simulate the prospects of success of ore sorting, applying different types of sensors. Empirical tests with commercially available sensor systems have been conducted to experimentally validate the predictions of the simulations. The estimation of the target mineral grade can be further optimised by the use of machine learning algorithms for the integration of automated mineralogy data and sensor data. The approach can easily be adapted to other types of raw materials and thus has great potential to become a key technology for the optimisation of processing experiments. Fundamental data on the rate of diffusion of boron in austenite and solubility of boron in the a and y phases of iron and steel have been obtained from deboronizing experiments and provide partial explanations for some of the phenomena observed in boron steels. The rate of diffusion of boron is about the same as carbon in austenite. The solubility of boron in austenite at normal heat-treating temperatures is less than 0.001 pct. A partial tentative Fe-B phase diagram in the important low boron concentration ranges and an equation representing the diffusion of boron in austenite are presented. A LTHOUGH a search of the literature revealed ALTHOUGHthat boron diffusion had not been studied quantitatively and systematically prior to 1948, a few qualitative observations which were made by following the diffusion of boron into iron packed in ferro-boron1-3 suggest that boron obeys normal diffusion laws and that the rate of diffusion increases with increasing temperature. The claim of Cornelius and Bollenrath1 that boron does not appear to influence the rate of carbon diffusion has recently been substantiated by Wells, Batz, and Mehl.4 Calculations based on data from the paper by Campbell and Fayv indicated that the diffusion coefficient (D) for boron in iron at 900°C is approximately 3x10 sq cm per sec; a value of 2x10-7 sq cm per sec at 1038°C has been reported by Digges et al in connection with decarburizing experiments on a commercial boron steel containing 0.43 pct C. During the period 1948 to 1950 several diffusivity constant (D) values for the diffusion of boron in the y phase of iron and steel and a number of solubility values for boron in both a and y phases were reported. It was concluded tentatively as a result of Metals Research Laboratory studies that D values for boron in y and a phases are about the same as for carbon in the comparable phasesa and that carbon up to 0.4 pct did not affect the rate of diffusion of boron in y iron above 1000°C within the limits of experimental error. Whether saturation of the y or a phases with carbon would significantly affect rates of diffusion of boron through them was then and still remains in doubt. The best estimate of Q (activation energy) was reported to be about 25,000 cal, somewhat lower than that for carbon in y iron. The solubility of boron in y iron at 1000°C was thought to be higher than 0.004 pct B but not as high as a more recent analysis of available data shows it to be. The solubility of boron in a iron at 700°C was reported to be 0.0004 pct B, but it would not have surprised the authors if the true solubility value is actually lower than this. Breaks in diffusion curves which were not understood when first obtained prior to 1950 have now been recognized as indicating solubility limits, and these are included in the present paper. Experimental Procedure Two methods were employed in an effort to determine diffusion coefficients (D) for boron in austenite. Early experiments involved the use of welded couples prepared in accordance with the procedure of Wells and Mehl,' but when the results of these experiments proved to be unsatisfactory for calculating D values, studies were continued by means of deboronizing experiments. In both cases, boron analyses following the diffusion anneal were carried out spectrographically and all D values were computed using the Grube solution of Fick's law. The precision of the spectrographic method used proved to be about equal to that reported by Corliss and Scribner" —average deviation from the mean about 5 pct of the amount present when the boron content is 0.003 pct. Concentration-penetration curves obtained from spectrographic analyses of welded couples generally indicated that practically no boron was transported across the weld interface during the diffusion anneal. Demand for both gem and industrial diamonds is very strong. Synthetic production supplies industrial uses, but synthetic gems remain inferior and expensive, so the large gem market is supplied by mining. Several major mines have been depleted, and the market is receptive to new sources of high quality gems. Canada's Precambrian terrane, extending across the Canadian Shield and under the Phanerozoic cover of the Plains and Hudson Bay, has excellent potential for diamonds, but exploration conditions are difficult due to recent glaciation. Early world exploration relying on recognition of diamond in alluvial sediments was adequate to launch pre- 1900 production from India, Brazil, and Africa. Exploration success in Canada, as was the case in Russia and other more recently discovered sources, however, had to await large investments in effort supported by advanced science and technology. Canadian exploration in many ways is similar to that in other regions, relying on analysis of tectonics, indicator minerals, geophysical surveys, and multiple stages of drilling and sampling. Very different from other regions, however, is Canada's surficial environment, in which recent glaciation has caused fresh indicator minerals to be transported hundreds of km. Exploration accelerated in Canada after 1960, first in Ontario and the Arctic Islands, then in Saskatchewan in 1988, and most importantly after the Chuck Fipke - Stew Blusson discovery at Lac de Gras, Northwest Territories, in 1991 that led to the billion-dollar BHP - Dia Met Ekati Mine that opened in 1998. In 2003, production from Ekati will be supplemented by that from the similar and nearby Diavik Mine of Rio Tinto and Aber. These mines will bring Canadian output to over 10% of world supply, and will position Canada with Botswana and Russia as world leaders in production of high quality gem diamonds. There could be other mines as well, as sites across the Arctic and in the south from Alberta to Québec are being explored by an array of companies, including De Beers, other majors, and several juniors.

The challenge of managing geological uncertainty in mine planning is central to optimizing resource extraction while minimizing risks and costs. This paper introduces a novel approach to coal mine planning by integrating chance-constrained programming to address the uncertainty inherent in mining operations. The main takeaway from this work is the demonstration that focusing on reducing the variance of high-quality coal blocks, rather than low-quality ones, can lead to better blending outcomes, higher profitability and more efficient resource utilization. The study presents a case study of a coal mining operation, using chance-constrained programming to manage the uncertainty surrounding coal property predictions, specifically the predicted coke strength after reaction (CSR).

The following pages present data accepted by many geochemists and geologists regarding the succession of minerals and the temperatures of formation in ore deposits affiliated with igneous rocks. They also present the individual views of the author on the composition of the solutions that were active and on the mode of deposition. He does not regard these views as speculations or hypotheses but as forming a well motivated and consistent theory. It is not certain, however, that all investigators will subscribe to them. Introduction The mining engineer may not always be interested in the field of stability and temperature of origin in the mineralogy of ore deposits, but he certainly is interested in the succession of minerals because this has a definite bearing on the understanding of the ores and on the best processes of extraction. It is proposed, therefore, to summarize in plain language the principal features of succession as shown in metallic ores. Chemical analyses of ores are always important, but the real knowledge of succession—sometimes called paragenesis-—of ores has been gained only in the last 20 years, by the study of polished sections. The study of hand specimens threw much light on the subject—as shown, for instance, by Breithaupt, whose "Paragenesis," written a hundred years ago, is still useful—but the results have been modified by our slowly gained understanding of the processes of replacement. Indications of Temperature Melting Points.—In the first place, a distinction must be made as to whether the ore is a product of magmatic consolidation, of pegmatitiza-tion or of hydrothermal activity. Most of the ores fall in the latter class. In any case, the melting points, although of importance, are not definite indications. THE mining district of São Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Mineração de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in Sao Fidelis-the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. MINERALIZATION AND ORES The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60° and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Macabú), the São Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and São Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in São Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydrothermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. Series of carbon compounds as anode materials were prepared for super lithium ion capacitor using graphite and active carbon (AC) as raw materials. Their electrochemical properties were investigated by constant current charge-discharge test. The results showed that the compound anode had good capacitive performance as well as Li-ion battery performance. The potential of the capacitor could be as high as 3.5V vs Li/Li+ when compared with 2.5V vs Li/Li+ in the AC-AC capacitor, accordingly, the energy density increased from 21.7Wh/kg to 40.3Wh/kg. The compound anode also had excellent rate performance that as the current density increasing from 0.1A/g to 1A/g,the capacitance decreased only 1.3F/g, and good cycle performance that the capacitance holding remained 96.7% after 10 times cycles even at the highest potential of 3.5 V vs Li/Li+.

FOR many years the mining of coal and other minerals occurring in sedimentary formation has been planned according to information obtained by diamond drilling. Placer mines have used churn drills for sampling and estimating deposits, and some metal mines have used the method either wholly or in part. The diamond drill method, therefore, although not entirely new, has come into more prominence in the last few years. Several large-scale developments now being planned or in the production stage have used this method in varying degree. This paper will describe the operations of the Howe Sound Exploration Co., Ltd. at Snow Lake, Manitoba, where a gold mine was developed and equipped for mining and milling wholly on the basis of diamond drilling results. The property has been in operation nearly 3 years, so that results can be compared with the estimates and assumptions made from the diamond drilling. In developing the subject it is necessary to outline as briefly as possible the normal method of mining, from discovery to production stage. Table I sets forth these various stages, the methods of financing, the percentage of total cost, and the relative time interval required for each section of the work. The plan presented in this table cannot be applied to all mining developments, but it gives a basis on which to work. In Stages 2 and 3 the investment is moderate, and if the property does not respond favorably the options or interests can be terminated. Stage 4 represents a sizeable investment, and it is more difficult to drop the property after this part of the operation is completed. Stages 2, 3, and 4 may be repeated several times by diflerent groups or companies before Stage 5 is reached, but when Stage 5 has been started the total capital investment must be provided and there can be no turning back. It will be noted that there is a total of 116 units of investment in the overall cost if one company proceeds with Stages 2, 3, 4, and 5 in order. Stage 4, however, consumes time which is important when markets are being considered. Bringing a property into production when metal prices are low is much more difficult than when the prices are high, and if this stage can be set aside production is attained more quickly. When Stage 4 is eliminated the total becomes 86 units of cost for Stages 2, 3, and 5, but an adjustment of 14 units must be added to Stage 5. These 14 units represent the useable value of Stage 4. Thus Stage 4 represents an investment of 30 units if carried on before Stage 5, but 14 units if included with Stage 5. This is accounted for by the fact that development work can be accomplished more cheaply under Stage 5, since everything that is done is planned on a production basis with permanent services.
