In sampling a process stream, conventional sampling theory deals only with the variation of the analyte content and neglects the impact of the variation in the mass flow on the sampling variance, whether the sampling regime is time-based or mass-based. This is an obvious simplification of the real state of affairs and it is worthwhile to study this impact via simulation.With a facility to simulate large (long) random functions having some thousands of points in the function and the ability to impose covariance functions on the mass flow and analyte variations, such a study is possible. It is also possible to evaluate the impact of correlation between analyte content and mass flows.This paper describes a limited study of the variance increase due to mass flow fluctuations over the usual sampling variance due to analyte variation during the sampling period. The bias in the sampling result is determined for specific modes of correlation. Simulation methods are used as they are the only means by which a sampling result can be compared to the true assay for the lot; in the physical circumstances of mineral process analysis, it is never possible to determine the true process stream assay.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. Updating the openpit vehicle transportation network has the problem of being time consuming and low precision. To address this problem, a high-precision road network model construction method for unmanned vehicles in openpit mines is proposed. This method can be divided into two steps. In the first step, an improved deep learning image processing model named DeepLabv3+C (DeepLabv3+Concat) is presented, and the road information extracted by the DeepLabv3+C network is used to construct a three-dimensional model of the openpit mine road network. In the second step, aiming at the time-consuming problem of unmanned vehicles meeting in openpit mines, a vehicle meeting strategy is proposed. This strategy is used to guide the navigation of unmanned vehicles in openpit mines. At the end of the study, vehicle running simulation was carried out on the road network model using Unity, a 3D visualization simulation software. The high-precision unmanned road network model of openpit mines studied in this work can further promote the construction and development of smart mines by acting as a high-precision map for unmanned vehicles.

A residential structure adjacent to a quarry in Ohio was instrumented to record structure motions, resulting wall strains and existing crack displacements in response to close-in blasting within 82 m (270 ft). The project is a cooperative effort among international experts representing the European Federation of Explosives Engineers (EFEE) and ISEE supported by more than 21 persons from eight different countries to compliment prior work performed at the Aitik Mine in northern Sweden. The focus of this study is to compare blast-induced vibration measurements relative to regulatory compliance limits as a percentage of allowable velocities among eight different countries for a one-story residential wood-frame structure with a brick-and-mortar exterior and full basement. Participating counties included Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). Geophones were placed on the foundation and in the ground in accordance with each country’s regulations to record peak velocities as a function of frequency or distance to blasting. This study extends the work performed at the Aitik Mine to include interior corner geophones to calculate global wall strains and micro-m (micro-in) displacement gauges mounted over an existing drywall crack to measure blast-induced dynamic crack responses and climatological influences on daily opening and closing of a crack. Structure responses were documented for 68 blasts conducted north of the structure from February through September 2023 of which 17 blasts were selected for detailed analyses. The highest in-ground PPVs recorded were 43 mm/s and 59 mm/s at the NE and SW corners, respectively. Measurements from these blasts plotted within each country’s limits provided a comparison of stringency among the counties. The percentage of compliance limits among counties ranged from an average of 114% for the US, UK, and Austria limits to the highest of 585% for Switzerland. Despite these high percentages of compliance for all countries, the global tensile strains induced by these blasts were at most only 12 μ-strains and occurred with the highest velocity blast that exceeded each county’s limit. This high percentage of compliance and low strain level demonstrates the restrictive nature of the regulations studied. Peak dynamic crack opening and closing during blasting averaged 20 -m (0.0008 in) while the 12-hour weather-induced crack displacement during the time period over which blasting occurred averaged 200 -m (0.008 in) and the largest 12-hr change in crack width was 356 -m. This low level of crack response validates the observation that the studied regulations have highly conservative limits for cracking potential of standard building materials.

THE increased use of heat-resistant alloys (26 per cent Cr, 12 per cent Ni; 16 per cent Cr, 35 per cent Ni; 12 per cent Cr, 60 per cent Ni; etc.) in recent years has been accompanied by continued demands by the consumer for improvement in properties. The manufacturers of these materials, of necessity, have resorted to more critical studies of the basic causes of variations in fundamental properties. To keep pace with the need for augmented information, previous techniques of investigation have been refined and new test methods and instruments created. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the apparatus, experimental technique and precision of measurement that were employed in the exploration of properties of heat-resistant alloy presented in a companion paper.? The detailed precautions in experimental procedure essential for attainment of accurate and comparable data at elevated temperatures cannot be too highly emphasized. THE CREEP TEST Since the fundamental concepts of creep testing have been recognized for the past 20 years, present interest is restricted to refinements in equipment and experimental procedure. The creep-test laboratory constructed for the American Brake Shoe and Foundry Co. is designed to permit 1000-hr. tests in the temperature range of 1200° to 2200°F. with a choice of applied stress extending from 50 to 50,000 lb. per sq. in. in increments of 50 lb. per sq. in. To simplify the calculation of weight combinations, the loading beams (Fig. I) are provided with counterweights to eliminate the tare. The precision of the knife-edges (10.1 ratio) is such that a 10-gram weight placed on the upper specimen grip will be exactly balanced by a 1-gram weight attached to the loading shackle. Check of the loading weights proved the maximum error to be 0.06 per cent. Axial alignment is provided by crossed knife-edges in the grip seats. The furnaces are similar in design to those of Crane and Company, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the U.S. Steel Corporation. An 80 per cent Pt, 20 per cent Rh No. 19 B. and S. gauge wire is used as the heating element. The details of construction are shown in the radiograph reproduced in Fig. 2. The windings are held in place on an alundum tube with alundum cement; the distribution of turns is adjusted to give a maximum temperature gradient of ± 1°F. over a 4-in. gauge length (Fig. 3). To avoid sharp temperature differentials at the ends of the test section, the length of the furnace is four times the gauge length. Keywords: AN-KN Phase Transition, Lattice Parameters of AN-KN, X-ray Diffraction The lattice parameters of the low and high temperature phase of KNO3-rich (in NH4NO3) solid solutions have been determined by the X-ray diffraction method. The low temperature single KNO3 phase (KN II) are from 92%-100% KNO3 in NH4NO3 composition range and from room temperature to 393 K showing in X-ray diffraction patterns. The high temperature KNO3 phase (KN I) showed very broad composition range between 20% to 100% KNO3. The lattice parameters of KNO3-rich (KN II and KN I) solid solutions have been calculated at different temperature range. The volumes of orthorhombic KN II phase decrease from 0.3208(3) to 0.3195(3) nm³ at the room temperature as the compositions increase from 95% to 100% KNO3. The lattice constants of the hexagonal KN I phase show that there is no significant change in a-direction when the temperature increases. Details X-ray results and lattice expansion equations during heating will be presented.

The Australian states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, because of their endowment of black coal resources, dominate the production and export statistics for Australian coal. NSW produced 86 million tonnes of saleable coal in 1994, representing a doubling of output since 1980, or a growth of 5% per annum. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has, of course, driven this growth in NSW. This high Asian demand is forecast to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. This paper focuses on some of the issues facing NSW in the future, and in particular, examines some of the major new and proposed mining projects.

For deep block and panel caving mines, undercut or extraction level instability can have as much impact on overall recovery as underbreak or the premature ingress of waste. If the area of the mine affected by excessive convergence is small, recovery is usually possible. However, there are several examples of entire blocks that were abandoned prematurely due to footprint collapse. Clearly, such global instability has a major impact on recovery and must be avoided – this is one of the essential tasks for the design team.The design problem is complex. The planning engineer must ensure that the footprint has sufficient capacity to withstand the maturing loads in the cave, accounting for the effects of stress path, geological structures and the rock mass conditions. These are often uncertain and only sometimes quantified.The demand on the footprint will also be influenced by decisions and actions taken during production, especially related to draw, which can worsen a developing problem. Perhaps most importantly, the design decisions that favour stability and lead to lower deformation also negatively impact on idealised cave flow. Many engineers aim to minimise the size of extraction level pillars, to improve theoretical future resource recovery but in fact this can reduce recovery if widespread deformation ensues due to the undersized pillars.In 2014, PT Freeport Indonesia undertook detailed numerical analysis to quantify the effects of variability in rock mass conditions and geological structure on overall footprint performance. The analysis accounted for a range of stress paths and maturing cave loading scenarios sourced from a calibrated whole-of-cave deformation-flow model. The intent was to replicate some of the diversity and distribution of pillar deformation outcomes that may be seen in practice at Freeport.The discontinuum finite element analysis was able to replicate damage localisation around persistent structures, a realistic distribution of drive deformation and show how small areas of instability can evolve into major problems if poorly managed. The limits of pillar size and ground support as solutions to a number of different instability problems was also investigated, showing that pillar size alone was not a sufficient remedy for all adverse circumstances.In this paper, we describe the workflow for numerical analysis of footprint deformation. The foundations at the Huey P. Long Bridge in New Orleans presented special challenges for construction due to the requirements for very deep drilled shafts in the Mississippi River beneath the existing bridge structure. Drilled shafts were constructed to depths of approximately 200ft in alluvial soils using a rotator system with full-length segmental casing, and base grouted to improve axial resistance. This paper describes the design and construction of the work platform to provide access to the restricted-access site beneath the existing bridge, the approach used to construct the drilled shafts, and the results of a load test program to verify the axial resistance.

"INTRODUCTIONRio Algom's Stanleigh Mill in Elliot Lake began production in June of 1983. The highly instrumented mill treats uranium ore at an average rate of 3900 metric tons per day. To help ensure a good start-up and low operating costs, an extensive training program was undertaken prior to and during start-up. This presentation describes how an unconventional operating crew were combined to form an operating unit with a high efficiency in terms of production and labour utilization. I would like to point out at the outset that the operating philosophy, and the role of the supervisors and the operators as set up at Stanleigh is not unique. Indeed, I have seen the same results at a couple of small plants where efficiency meant survival. However, these situations appeared to be the exception, and it was not readily apparent how similar results could be obtained in a larger plant. A factor that existed at the time was low labour turnover. As in most parts of Canada, jobs were easy to get in the Elliot Lake camp in the late 1970's. This, and other factors, contributed to an unusually high labour turnover. This changed dramatically in the early 1980's. Indeed, Rio's two other operating mills, Quirke and Panel reduced crew sizes at this time to reduce operating costs. As a result all of Stanleigh's operators came from Quirke and Panel with experience varying from 4 to 7 years. The experience that operators had was obviously of benefit and served to reduce the scope of the training program from what would have been required with inexperienced personnel."

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

"The granulation of a red mud is of great importance for recycling this material as an adsorbent for waste water or gas. A new granulating process was developed and its effect was evaluated. To reduce the cost of the granulation process, the wet filter cake (containing 25% water) was directly mixed with different cement contents (4%, 6%, 8% and 10% based on wet material). The mixtures were placed in a moist environment for 4 days, and then were washed with deionized water until the pH values of leachants were lower than 9.0. The efflorescence ratio, surface area and particle size of the aged mixture were determined, respectively, by bottle shaking experiments, N2 adsorption and screening. The results showed that the best addition of cement is 2%, and this yielded granulated material with a particle size of less than 2 mm, an efflorescence ratio of 4.83% and a specific surface area of 17.42 m2/g.IntroductionRed mud is a residue of the aluminium industry that is produced during the alkaline extraction of alumina from bauxite by the Bayer process. For every ton of alumina that is produced, the amount of red mud generated can vary from 0.3 to 2.5 tons, depending on the characteristics of the bauxite. In its typical form, red mud is brick red in colour, caustic, about three times as dense as water and, when un-neutralised, has a high pH, typically around pH 13 [1]. It is primarily composed of iron oxide, silica and alumina, along with traces of heavy metals. Red mud particles are quite small; typically 99% will pass through a 0.6 mm sieve and 87% through a 0.038 mm sieve [2],"

The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (NR&M) accepted the environmental liability for the Mount Morgan minesite in 1991. This gold and copper mine located 38 km southwest of Rockhampton had been in operation for more than 100 years. Mining leases are still active while the feasibility of a reprocessing operation is carried out. From 1993, NR&M have operated a seepage interception pumpback system which has reduced the chronic load of acid rock drainage (ARD) to the adjacent Dee River, a tributary of the Fitzroy River system. In early-2000, it was recognised that a ten-year plan for rehabilitation of the mine, along with significant funding would be required if a long-term sustainable rehabilitation strategy was to be implemented at this minesite, ultimately making the seepage interception system redundant. A rehabilitation planning workshop coordinated by NR&M was held in May 2000. This workshop brought to the mine a range of technical expertise and key stakeholder groups. This workshop provided a technical forum for review of studies undertaken and to identify priority projects, which needed to be undertaken in the future to more clearly define contaminant sources on the mine site and to prioritise the rehabilitation program. Stakeholder consultation enabled the project team to be clear on community and other government (eg Environmental Protection Agency) expectations. It is clear that the future of the economically depressed community of Mount Morgan will be reliant on the careful management of the significant heritage values at the minesite for tourism, education and research. In the first year (2000), priority studies were initiated, which included whole of site studies on water balance, contaminant sources and a review of occupational health and safety and environment of the minesite and conservation and heritage scoping. Baseline vegetation and soil materials surveys were also initiated. The outcomes of these studies helped to shape the work program for the following year, while providing a basis for an additional funding application, which was granted. The second year of studies focused on building upon the existing baseline studies completed. In addition, studies focussed on addressing the priority issue of contingency planning for overflow from the open cut pit in accordance with best practice management of release water and river monitoring strategies were completed. Completion of these projects over the next six months will enable the optimal rehabilitation strategy to be defined in 2003. This optimal strategy may require the use of a water treatment plant for part of the ten-year program to provide space in the open cut pit for the deposition of ARD contaminant sources (eg waste dumps, tailings). It is envisaged that some sources will be rehabilitated insitu while others will be relocated to the open cut pit. Implementation of this strategy will be dependent on subsequent funding.

The need for instruments to measure the movement of fluids and gas in wells has been recognized by engineers for many years. Information regarding flow in the producing interval has a direct bearing on completion practices in new wells and also provides information on the production characteristics of the well. Many hours of engineering time are spent in planning and completing wells but knowledge as to whether or not the original planning has produced the desired results has not always been complete. Many questions such as the following often arise: Why is it that two wells are completed under supposedly identical conditions, yet one well is a good one and the other is a poor one? Are the sands that look the best on the electric log contributing to the production? These and many other conditions in the producing well need to be under- stood in order to develop more efficient production practices and to improve on methods of completing new wells. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe one type of instrument, outline the methods of running the equipment and show the results of surveys made under various conditions. With an understanding of the use of this type of survey its importance can be evaluated in relation to the problems encountered by the operator. DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The instrument is a velocity recorder employing a clock-controlled 16mm film for recording the rpm of an extremely sensitive rotor which is rotated by the flow of fluids or gas in a well. The helical-vaned rotor and shaft, weighing one-half of one ounce are an integral unit exposed to the well fluids and are the only moving parts not enclosed in the fluid-tight housing. No packing or fluid seal of these parts is necessary and the shaft is mounted top and bottom on special jeweled bearings. Fig. A is the lower part of the instrument showing rotor and shaft with the protecting housing sleeve removed. The rpm of the rotor is recorded on the moving film by a combination electrical and optical system. The record is a series of dashes on the film, each dash and space representing twenty (20) revolutions of the rotor. As the movement of the film is controlled by the clock the number of dashes and spaces in one minute of film travel represents the rpm of the rotor. The range of the instrument is from 0 to 2,500 rprn. The barrel or housing is 1-11/16 in. OD and seven feet long. Various types of expanding fluid traps are attached to the lower end of the instrument to direct the flow through the 1 in. orifice containing the rotor. Dolomite impurities are increasing in the currently mined phosphate deposits in Florida. Several research efforts have been conducted in various laboratories around the globe to find methods to economically removing the dolomite. However, a universal and cost-effective process is not now in commercial use. In this paper, a new process for dolomite/apatite separation is presented. The differential solubility of dolomite in slightly acidic solution is utilized to generate micro CO2 bubbles at the dolomite/water interface. Particle (dolomite)/bubble aggregates float to the surface leaving phosphate concentrate with low MgO content. Interestingly, up to 6.0 mm particles can be floated by such micro-bubble/particle aggregates. Different surface-active agents were tested to stabilize the bubbles. Results of these tests are presented, and the mechanisms involved are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION Corrosion of sections of piping used in steam-heating systems is frequently regarded as unavoidable, and periodic replacement is provided. Surfaces exposed to newly condensed steam appear to be especially vulnerable to attack. As an added nuisance, solid products of the corrosion tend to accumulate, plugging return lines.The trouble is ascribed in the main to carbon dioxide and oxygen 3/ 4 / 5/ 6/ dissolved in the condensate. When oxygen is the principal factor, the corrosion usually is characterized by pitting. Carbon dioxide tend3 to cause an acidic condensate which dissolves the metal more uniformly and produces the familiar failure at threaded areas where the piping is relatively thin, and where high stress may tend to acceletate the attack. Carbon dioxide enters the system with the feedwater, generally in a combined form such as carbonates and bicarbonates. Oxygen enters both with the raw feedwater-and as air leaking into lines under partial vacuum. The larger central-heating plants have sought to reduce corrosion by eliminating these gases as much as possible. A smaller plant ordinarily lacks the equipment and technical supervision required for this purpose."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Afton Mines property is located 180 air miles east-northeast of Vancouver and nine miles west of Kamloops, a city of 60,000 people in south central British Columbia. The deposit is located adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway at an elevation of 2,231 feet above sea level.Interest in the property dates back to 1898, when a 330 foot shaft was sunk on the Pothook claim immediately south of the existing operations. Since that time many companies and individuals have investigated the possibilities of the area but it was not until 1972 that Afton Mines Ltd. located a significant zone of copper mineralization. The feasibility study was completed in the period 1974-1975, by Teck Corporation Ltd., who control Afton through 50% direct ownership and 65% ownership of Isa Mines, who own a further 23%. Construction began in March, 1976. Ore production started in August, 1977, and the first ore was fed to the mill on December 8. This was the third mine to be brought into operation by Teck since 1975, the others being Newfoundland Zinc and Niobec.The orebody is a porphyry copper deposit which has undergone supergene alteration. It is 1,700 feet long in a west-northwest by east-southeast direction, 300 feet wide and dips at 55° to the south. The mineralization in the supergene zone, which accounts for two-thirds of the known deposit, is rather unusual in that the copper is present primarily as native copper and chalcocite. The grade is one percent with the distribution: 70% native, 25% chalcocite, and 5% chalcopyrite with bornite, covellite, and cuprite."

Although motor gasoline marketed in the United States in January of this year was, on the average, slightly more volatile than that sold in January 1925, the improvement in quality is too small to be of importance. In other words, there is no evidence that any radical change in the quality of gasoline is being made at the present time. During the past six years the Bureau of Mines has made semi-annual surveys of the gasoline marketed in the United States, the survey just completed being the thirteenth in the series. The cities in which samples have been collected have been chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories as it is obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

The markets and environmental protection rules are more and more exacting, both of which have determined that copper smelters should look for technological development and global management to ensure their viability and competitivity in the short and long term. The main facilities of the present and future Smelting-Converting Process at Codelco's Caletones Smelter, is based on Teniente Converter reactors with a high operational availability that have reached concentrate processing capacities near 2,000 tpd. These reactors are in operation in most of the smelters in Chile as well as in Zambia, Peru, Mexico and, in ?the near future, in Thailand. Since 1993, the Smelting-Converting process of the Caletones Smelter of Codelco-Chile has been based on one Reverberatory furnace, two Teniente Converters and four Peirce-Smith Converters. These facilities, together with the operation of two Fluidized Bed Dryers, three Slag Cleaning Furnaces, and two Oxygen Plants have allowed the smelter to reach concentrate smelting capacities and copper productions of 1,215 kt/year and 360 kt/year, respectively. This transitional operating scheme, combining together traditional and advanced technological equipment, needs further modernization to successfully face the modern world challenges, especially with relation to the environmental commitment, production costs and wide satisfaction of customers. For this reason, for the period 1997-2000, a Modernization Plan has been worked out. This plan considers an increase of the present throughput, which will permit a significant increase in productivity, as well as finding a definitive solution for meeting the environmental regulations. Among these projects, we can point out the definitive shut down of the Reverberatory Furnace, which is a contaminating piece of equipment of low energetic efficiency. Additionally, it considers the installation of two new Slag Cleaning Furnaces, one additional Oxygen Plant, and the incorporation of two new Sulphuric Acid Plants with a production capacity of 4,500 T/D, that will recover over 92% of the sulphur content, of process off-gases.
