An intelligent tool has been developed to analyse the quality of diecast components. The influence of both design and process parameters has been studied in great detail. The tool, based on expert systems related technologies, can identify the causes for the defective castings manufactured. Design related causes such as gate position; gate area, runner design etc. as well as process related causes such as cycle time, cavity filling time and melt temperature are suggested by analysing the data on defective castings for a manufacturing campaign. This intelligent analysis is useful for both design as well as production engineers in the decision making process. All the causes for the occurrence of defects are classified into two categories. The firs category is the 'rootcauses' i.e. the causes which are related to the actual process, material and design parameters and which can be directly monitored. The second category is more abstract in nature and is classified as `metacauses'. These capture the scientific rationale implicit in the cause and defect relationships. This knowledge on causes and defects is represented in the form of a structured graph rather than by a set of rules, which, coupled with forward reasoning and heuristic search techniques results in an elegant and efficient approach. Uncertainties and the degree of relationship among causes and defects are represented by a fuzzy probabilistic model.

Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 33? per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 Per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches. Mine Power at 13.8 kv. enters the mine through a ventilation raise over a three-conductor, size 1-0 varnished cambric insulated, leaded, steel-wire armored cable, insulated from 17 kv. This power is received and distributed through one switching station and four underground substations, shown in Fig. 2. No. 370 substation (Fig. 3) contains three a 13,800/440-volt, single- phase Pyranol transformers protected on the high-voltage side by a 600-amp. manually operated oil circuit breaker. This station serves 20 slusher-hoist motors, a 45-kw., three-phase, 220-volt electric furnace, a Massco hot miller for tempering and milling Timken detachable bits and a hoist with 175-hp motor on the No, 3 development shaft. Also at this shaft are three pumps. One two-stage pump, 1200 gal, per min., 500-ft. head, 3600 r.p.m., driven by a 150-hp. motor, is at the bottom of the shaft, Two deep-well pumps, 500 gal. per min., 500-ft. head, are at the collar of the shaft. under normal operation the one pumping 1200 gal. per min, is controlled by a float switch to take care of the water. If this pump fails, or if its capacity is insufficient, the first 500-gal. pump is automatically started1 and if still more capacity is needed the second 500-gal. pump automatically starts. Time delay relays are provided on the deep-well pumps, so that if power fails the column will have time to drain before the Pumps restart. On failure of any Of these, an alarm is sounded in the train dispatcher's office, so that mechanics can be sent to ascertain the cause of failure and make repairs. The cable from No. 37' substation is run to the switching station, in which are four 15-kv., 600-amp. direct-current sole-noid-operated oil circuit breakers. A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. Polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers (CnEm) render quartz hydrophobic while feldspar remains hydrophilic. As a result quartz can be separated from feldspar in small frothless flotation devices such as the Hallimond tube. The separation can be accomplished at room temperature at pH < 7 and C16E33 concentrations between 10-5 and 10-4 M for quartz particles smaller than 0.4 mm. No separation is observed when feldspar ore containing about 60 % of feldspar and 40% of quartz is subjected to flotation in a laboratory flotation machine. The reason for the lack of separation is a low hydrophobicity of quartz in the presence of polyethylene glycol monoalkyl ethers and high intensity of mixing in the flotation machine. The flotometric tests showed that the contact angle of quartz in monoalkyl ethers of polyethylene glycol solutions is less than about 18 degrees and depends on the structure and concentration of the ether and the pH of the system.

A RECONNAISSANCE Of the manganese-and chrome-ore deposits of Cuba was made by the writer, as a representative of the U. S. Geological Survey, in company with Mr. Albert Burch of the Bureau of Mines under instructions of the Secretary of the. Interior, in the Spring of 1918. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for the use of the United States Government as to the location, character, quantity, and availability of the manganese and chrome-ore deposits in Cuba. Accordingly, the work comprised the examination of such deposits as seemed to be of promise, without regard to stage of development, with a view to determination of the quantity and quality of ore likely to become available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve. While it was possible to visit most of the deposits that seemed to be of promise, there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Manganese ore is found in Cuba in Oriente, Santa Clara, and Pinar del Rio Provinces, but in Oriente Province only does it occur in large commercial quantities. There, the deposits are in three areas: one north of Santiago de Cuba, one south of Bayamo and Baire, and one on the Caribbean coast between Torquino Peak and Portillo. In Santa Clara Province, a little ore has been found near the Caribbean coast west of Trinidad; and in Pinar del Rio Province, manganiferous material occurs north of the city of Pinar del Rio and farther west near Mendoza. The manganese ores of Cuba occur, principally, in sedimentary rocks, such as limestone, sandstone, and shale, that are in places metamorphosed, and. in beds that originally may have been water-laid tuff

The solubility of UO2 was determined at 1,250° C. in ternary melts of UF4 and BaF2 with CaF2, LiF, and SrF2. The solubility of Ce02 was measured at 800° and 850° C. in a solution of CeF3, BaF2, and LiF. The amount of La203 which dissolves at 950° C. in a binary mixture of LiF and LaF3 and a ternary of LiF, LaF3, and BaF2 was also measured. In each case, the amount of soluble oxide was mound to be less than 5 weight-percent. A procedure was developed for filtering fused, oxide-saturated fluoride melts in order to obtain a representative sample for chemical analysis. The oxide content of the samples was determined by an inert-gas fusion procedure.

In the present investigation flotation was used as a diagnostic to understand the effects of changes to the media during the grinding stage. The observations from flotation for different media are discussed in terms of particle size distribution, water recovery, solid recovery and valuable mineral recovery. The chemical parameters; pH, redox potential (Eh) and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were measured. A Base Metal Sulphide (BMS) ore was ground under media of different shapes and compositions to determine the effect of different rod/ball material on the flotation performance of the ore. For a given grind (D80 = 75 µm), media shape had no effect on flotation performance of a BMS ore. Different grinding media had significant effect on slurry chemical properties and flotation performance. Mild steel rods (RMMS) produced the highest solids recovery, nickel and pyrrhotite (Po) recovery, with the highest ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extractable iron and the lowest DO level. Chrome steel balls and stainless steel rods produced the lowest metal recovery, EDTA extractable iron and the highest DO level. A complementary study was conducted to investigate the effect of using different grinding media compositions, viz, ceramic, forged steel, 15% chrome steel, stainless steel and a mixture of stainless steel and 15% chrome steel (50:50) balls were investigated using a Platinum Group Mineral (PGM), UG2 ore. Grinding products of five different media produced the same solids and water recovery, but the grades and recoveries of Platinum Group Elements (PGE) and chromite were different. Grinding products of ceramic media showed the best flotation performance, with the highest PGE recovery and the lowest Cr2O3 recovery. While grinding products of stainless steel balls (SS) produced the lowest PGE recovery and highest Cr2O3 grade and recovery in the concentrates.

Before attempting to describe the application of recently acquired knowledge to the classification of coal it will be as well to consider the objects at which a scientific classification should aim. Here one can not do better than to follow the example of Clarence Seyler,l by quoting from Huxley&apos;s "Classification of Animals:" "By the classification of any series of objects is meant the actual or ideal arrangement together of those which are like and the separation of those which are unlike, the purpose of the arrangement being to facilitate the operation of the mind in clearly conceiving and retaining in the memory the characters of the object in question. Thus there are as many classifications of any series of natural or other bodies as they have properties or relations to one another or to other things. But the statement of the characters of the class ... is something more than an arbitrary definition ... it expresses firstly, a generalization based on and constantly verified by very with experience; and, secondly, a belief arising out of that generalization—in other worda. the definition of the class is a statement of a law of correlation or coexistence . . . from which the most important conclusions are deducible." In that same sense writes John Stuart Mill, in the chapter on classification in his "Logic:" "The ends of scientific classification are best answered when the objects are formed into groups concerning which a greater number of general propositions can be made, and these properties more important, than could be made respectiug any other groups into which the same things could be distributed. The properties, therefore, according to which objects arc classified should, if possible, be those which are causes of many other properties, or, at any rate, which are sure marks of them." Now in the case of coal, the properties which have been used from time to time for classification purposes are the ultimate analysis, volatile matter, caking power, calorific power, burning properties, etc. Seyler has shown that there is a general law of correlation or coexistence between the ultimate composition and the other properties. Rusk County is located in the northwestern portion of the state of Wisconsin, roughly 130 miles east of Minneapolis (Figure 1). The topography is generally flat with dairy farming the principal activity. Forest and swamp lands are common, as well as pasture and cultivated ground. Rusk County falls near the southern terminus of the Precambrian Shield and is covered by a thick layer of glacial drift. Outcrops are quite rare, but the few available exposures indicate that the subsurface is comprised of steeply dipping metamorphosed volcanics and sediments of Early Proterozoic age. A thin section of flatlying Cambrian sandstone is sometimes found directly under the glacial till. The depth to Precambrian basement has been recorded to be as great as 150 feet beneath the surface.

"ABSTRACTThe US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has 704 dams in their inventory and over 100,000 miles of levees with a capital value of over $150 billion. Currently, there are 319 dams that are classified as high hazard and have actionable failure modes that will require structural modifications. The most frequent actionable failure mode associated with the inventory is seepage and piping. One of the most effective engineering solutions is the installation of a cutoff to limit seepage. Currently, USACE has over $1.5 Billion of cutoff wall projects under construction and/or design. Given the magnitude of the dam and levee safety issues, USACE is developing a new Engineering Manual (EM) titled “Seepage Control Cutoffs for Dams and Levees.” This EM covers all of the methods to construct cutoff walls. USACE has partnered with the Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) in preparation of the EM to ensure that it is comprehensive and draws from the expertise of the specialty foundation engineering companies that design, manufacture, and construct seepage control cutoffs around the world. The EM contains case histories as well as a comprehensive project statistical summary and guide specification paragraphs. The goal of USACE was to make the EM a state of the art document for use by Districts.HISTORYSlurry wall construction techniques were developed in the late 1940’s in Italy by ICOS. The first use of the slurry trench method of construction in the United States was by the USACE Memphis District in September 1945, to form a partial cutoff along the Mississippi River levee on the Arkansas side of the river just below Memphis, Tennessee. The idea for the project probably evolved from the use at that time of puddle clay trench cutoffs combined with the use of drilling mud for advancing borings. A paddle wheel mixing device was constructed for making slurry from native clays. Trenches were dug to a 20-ft depth using a trenching machine and to a 35-ft depth using a dragline with a 100-ft boom and 2-cu-yd bucket. Backfill was mixed in windrows at the site from hauled-in clay gravel and native materials and pushed into the trench by a bulldozer when the length of the trench was equal to about twice the trench depth. It is amazing that after almost 70 years, the technique is still about the same as it was when first developed by the Memphis District. A soilbentonite cutoff was constructed under the Kennewick Levee adjacent to the Columbia River as part of the McNary Dam Project in Washington by the Walla Walla District in 1952 The first application of a soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff for control of underseepage at a major earth dam was at Wanapum Dam on the Columbia River in Washington in 1959.The first cement- bentonite cutoff in the United States was constructed at the Tilden Tailings Project to store tailings from the Tilden Mine in Michigan in 1976. The first cement-bentonite cutoff constructed at a dam on a river retaining a reservoir in the United States was completed in 1978 at the Elgo Dam (formerly the San Carlos Dam) in Arizona.The USACE has designed and constructed some of the deepest and most complex cutoff walls for dams since the 1970’s. The first major concrete panel cutoff wall constructed in a dam in the United States was at Wolf Creek Dam (Nashville District) by the ICOS Corporation between 1974-77. The dam has a long history of seepage issues associated with the karst geology that comprises the foundation. In 1968, about 17 years after first being impounded, wet areas, muddy flows in the tailrace and sinkholes in the downstream toe adjacent to the switchyard occurred."

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

BHP Iron Ore initiated research programs in January of 1995 to develop long term plans for decommissioning of the waste rock material at their Mt. Whaleback operation. More than 2 billion tonnes of waste rock were deposited during the past 30 years. Ultimately, the operators will deposit a total of approximately 5 billion tonnes in waste rock dumps constructed near the open pit. The Mt. Whaleback operation is located in a semi-arid climate adjacent to Newman, Western Australia, approximately 1200km north-northeast of Perth, Western Australia. The primary research program includes the development of technology for the long term performance of the waste rock dumps with respect to vegetation, slope stability, surface runoff, erosion, and water infiltration. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of a cover system to prevent water infiltration to the underlying waste rock. A laboratory program and the soil-atmosphere modelling completed to design the horizontal field test plots are described. The construction of the horizontal surface field test plots are discussed together with the field instruments installed to monitor performance. The key components of the instrumentation program are the design and installation of large scale field lysimeters to measure the unsaturated flow of moisture into the waste rock from the base of the cover layer. The cover system is designed to maximize infiltration during wet periods for subsequent evapo-transpiration while minimizing surface runoff. The result is a near zero net infiltration to the underlying waste material. A key feature of the design is the use of pit run waste material as the cover material. Monitoring is in progress and will continue for at least two annual wet/dry cycles. The optimum cover system should minimize the net infiltration of water to the underlying waste rock while maintaining physical and ecological integrity for long term performance.

In recent years, various renovations have been carried out in the production chain of the Outokumpu copper refinirg process. The anode casting shop, which is the final integral production section at the Harjavalta copper smelter built in its original form in 1945, was fourxl unsuitable for technical and capacity demads during longer periods of operation, and a new casting shop was built in 1974. The electrolytic copper refinery of Outokumpu Oy at Pori was built in 1941, and subsequently expanded in two stages. Even with its present limited scale of production it has been fom important to mechanize the main operations. This work was started in 1967 with the design and construction of the starting sheet machine connected with the cathode washing and unloading machine as a combined unit. Mechanized treatment of anodes has gained advantage particularly from the new design of a highly automated anode casting shop. In the further development of the mechanization a stripping machine for, starting sheets was designed and installed, starting operation in 1974.

The first six Reports of Investigations in this series , pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit, dealt with ( 1 ) the dust produced by blasting , ( 2) the effect of stemming upon gases generated by blasting , ( 3 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite , (4) the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite , ( 5) comparison of dust and gases produced when blasting charges of dynamite in drill holes , bombs, and mud - cap shots , and ( 6 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 40 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite .

The mining industry is experiencing change in the governance of tailings facilities (TFs). Guidance and regulations across many jurisdictions contribute to this amorphous change. The Canadian Dam Association, Mining Association of Canada, Australian National Committee on Large Dams, and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, produced by the International Council on Mining and Metals, are establishing guidelines for more rigorous industry governance. Evolving guidance regarding TFs is developing concurrently with a shortage of experienced tailings engineers, which adversely affects the resource base available to support new governance. This paper presents an updated semi-quantitative estimate of the impending resource shortage of qualified tailings professionals. Updates are provided herein for the estimated number of TFs worldwide, which included available data on active and inactive TFs, as well as the estimated labor resources required to service these facilities. The tailings labor shortage is discussed in the context of academic and professional training currently available to increase the quantity of trained personnel. This paper represents a discrete moment in time as contributions to the available information and inventories accessed continue to improve, but as of today are incomplete. However, the data and information included provide insight into the resource deficiencies currently within our profession, training and education opportunities to address those resource deficiencies, and a snapshot of a recent professional training course offered on mine tailings.

This work was done to develop methods for increasing the yields and purity of vanadium prepared by bomb reduction of vanadium compounds . Compounds reduced were V₂ 05 , V203 , VC , and VC13 . Sodium , calcium , and magnesium were used as reductants . Variables considered included reductant form , bomb size , pressure during reaction , method of ignition , and the use of slag fluidizing additives . It was concluded that yields of 85 to 90 percent can be effected by the calcium reduction of V205 in reactors measuring as much as 14 inches in diameter and 60 inches in height . Optimum charge composition included V₂05 , 65 percent excess calcium , and 0.4 moles sulfur per mole vanadium . Purity of the vanadium produced in large reactors varied from 99.5 to 99.8 percent . The higher purity metal , depending upon the amounts of interstitial impurities present , was usually cold ductile . Although high yields of up to 99.5 percent can be effected by bomb reduction of VC1 , the high pressures developed in the bombs and attack of the reactor walls by the byproduct chloride slags discourages this method of preparing vanadium . It was found that significant purification of impure regulus metal occurred when it was hydrided , crushed , acid leached , and vacuum dehydrided . Metal so treated can readily be converted to ductile sheet . A cost estimate based on the production of 100 tons of vanadium per year was prepared . It was concluded that pure ductile vanadium could be produced for approximately $ 20.00 per pound .

THE Research Division of The New Jersey Zinc Company (of Pa.) has conducted, over a period of years, numerous tests of the reducibility of various zinc ores and the reactivity of various kinds of coal, using a number of different experimental methods. Most of these tests have involved the reduction of mixtures of ore and coal. In such cases the following simultaneous reactions are believed to be mainly responsible for the production of zinc, as was shown by Bodenstein1 some years ago: ZnO + CO = Zn + CO2[I] C + CO2 = 2CO[2]. Each of these reactions is dependent upon the other for the supply of CO and C02, respectively, and the over-all rate of formation of zinc vapor will be determined by the slower of these two reactions. An analogous pair of reactions sometimes of importance is: ZnO + H2 = Zn + H2O[3] C+ H2O=CO+H2[4] While it is possible to obtain an indication of the relative reducibility of various ores, or of a fine versus a coarse ore, by testing them with a given coal, and while coal reactivities may be measured in a corresponding manner, a more direct determination of relative reaction rates is possible by carrying out the desired reactions, such as I and 2, separately and under reproducible conditions. It is one purpose of this paper to present some of the results that have been obtained by the latter method. C. G. Maier2 discusses the relative rates of reactions I and 2 and concludes that while at relatively low temperatures reaction I is faster than reaction 2, this difference becomes less with increasing temperatures, although at smelting temperatures reaction I is still the faster. He also says (p. 48), "At temperatures . . . between 1100° and 1300°C the zinc oxide reduction reaction is intrinsically more rapid than its physical limitations; that is, it is limited by gas diffusion rates." In the course of numerous reactivity tests involving the separate use of reactions and I and 2, we have obtained data that show by direct experiment, we believe for the first time, the correctness of Maier&apos;s statements concerning these reactions. We also include data on the relative rate of reaction 3, involving reduction by hydrogen. Finally, some interesting results obtained by carrying out the reduction of a zinc ore-coal briquet in streaming atmospheres of nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, respectively, are presented.*

INTRODUCTION There are many and varied sources of finance available to the mining industry for exploration, development and/or the operation of mining projects and companies. These sources include equity from major as well as "penny" stock exchanges, precious metal mutual funds, private investor groups (from "grubstakes" to tax-oriented limited partnerships) and banks. The variety is representative of the fact that the world&apos;s capital markets are segmented and stratified according to risk-reward characteristics. This interrelationship is summarized in Exhibit I and 2 which relate (very approximately) various sources of finance to a typical mining project&apos;s life cycle and risk-return characteristics. The objective of this paper is to introduce, as it applies to the mining industry, a somewhat recent phenomenon represented by one of these capital markets segments referred to as "venture capital." Venture capital investing per se, which today is a multibillion dollars per annum investment business, goes back as far as Queen Isabela&apos;s backing of Columbus&apos; "wild ideas." The real institutionalization of the venture capital process really began in earnest, however, after World War II. Today over 700 private venture capital sources (and more government related ones) exist providing funding to a range of industries, but typically related to the "high-tech" business. The table to the right shows industries financed by venture capital funds between 1980 and 1982. Conspicuous by its absence is, of course, mining which is not a great surprise since typical mining projects up until recently were large, required long lead times and were undertaken by established mining houses. Also, as most of you can appreciate, successful investing in the mining business requires a great deal of experience and understanding of the industry which most venture capital funds do not have. TARGETED RETURN The rate of return objective of most venture capital funds is, according to the legalized version, to realize a return which is "substantially in excess of that obtainable through conventional equity investments." One may say that a common objective of venture capital funds is to realize a 20% to 30% compound annual internal rate of return on capital over their life which is often ten years. [ ] This objective has been recently more feasible in the mining sector due to the development of smaller precious metal projects which cost less and are quicker to generate cash flow than the behemoth projects of the 1970s. In addition to precious metals, venture capitalists have invested or looked at a variety of other mining projects including ones as prosaic as a high margin "kitty litter" operation, sand-gravel and other industrial minerals operations, the leveraged buyouts of coal mines or mineral divisions of major energy or mining corporations, and even in in-situ copper or gold leaching ventures. A typical investment is in the range of $100,000 to $3,000,000 although some can go as high as 5,000,000. This implies a project size up to, say, 30,000,000 if a venture capital fund does it on its own. Larger projects can be done if the equity portion of the investment is syndicated with other investors.

A poured slag bottom is universally considered to be the best type bottom for copper reverberatory furnaces. It is impervious to molten matte and ready for immediate use.When molten slag is not available a monolithic silica bottom is the second best; such a bottom has been adopted at Mount Morgan. The laying of such a bottom is a phase of smelter construction on which so little real information is obtainable that a day to day record of such a recent example as Mt. Morgan&apos;s 19 ft. x 40 ft. reverberatory may be of interest. The work was done under the direction of E. Pesout, of McGill Smelter, Nevada. PREPARATION OF THE BOTTOMA 26-inch bed of closely packed firebrick with sand-filled joints was first laid on the clean, dry concrete foundation and the whole dried out by small fires maintained on the brickwork for several days. Ninety tons of silica sand was meantime thoroughly dried and stored in clean drums. This sand must be low in FeO and CaO and contain about 95% Si02 , the majority of which should be present as tridymite. This form of silica shows little expansion at high temperatures, for it is the form stable between 870&#176; and 1470&#176; C.Its presence thus minimises disturbance to the bottom by the expansion which, during the burning in, would mark the transformation of quartz to tridymite.
