The paleogeographic evolution of the Abitibi Belt is subdivided into three phases, namely: 1) a phase of the growth of a submarine volcanic chain, 2) a phase of the emergence and growth of volcanic islands and 3) a phase of uplif t and erosion of volcanic islands. Isostatic calculations suggest that the volcanic sequence in the south of the Abitibi Belt rests on oceanic basement or on the mantle; the volcanic sequence in the north of the belt rests on about 13-14 km of tonalitic basement. 10-15 km of plutonic material accreted to the volcanic islands during paleogeographic phases 1 and 2, and caused the uplif t during paleogeographic phase 3.

Our opinion is that the current lack of R&D investment and implementation capacity places Canada at risk as a future global mining leader A white elephant A burdensome possession; creating more trouble than it is worth. White (albino) elephants were regarded as holy in ancient times in Thailand and other Asian countries. Keeping a white elephant was a very expensive undertaking, since the owner had to provide the elephant with special food and provide access for people who wanted to worship it. If a Thai King became dissatisfied with a subordinate, he would give him a white elephant. The gift would, in most cases, ruin the recipient.

DURING the course of experiments involving oxygen equilibrations with a high-purity Pd-5 at. pct Rh alloy, the appearance of a subscale was noted. Most of the heat treatments in a pure oxygen atmosphere were performed at 900°C. The presence of the subscale was noted when the oxygen partial pressure was in excess of approximately 95 mm, up to 1 atm, the highest pressure used. According to available thermodynamic information' on the free energy of formation of Rh2O3 (the only reliably reported solid oxide of rhodium), this oxide should not be stable under these conditions, nor, of course, any oxide of palladium. Extraction of the subscale from the matrix was affected by treatment with aqua regia, and the resulting X-ray diffraction powder pattern is shown in Table I. This pattern is not that of Rh2O3, nor that of any known rhodium or palladium oxide. It can be indexed on a hexagonal lattice with a. = 5.22Å and co = 6.0Å. In addition to this unknown material, there was a weak Rh2O3 pattern. An X-ray fluorescence analysis of the powder gave 3214 palladium counts per sec and 5381 rhodium counts per sec, thus indicating the likelihood of a double oxide of palladium and rhodium. In view of the fact that the above result was obtained on a single sample, it is perhaps best not to insist upon the above ratio of about 0.6, but possibly to tentatively assume 0.5 or 1/1. The small amount of Rh2O3 in the X-ray pattern might have occurred on cooling, and it seems possible that the double oxide, below some temperature level, is not as stable as Rh2O3. To examine this point, some of the extracted double oxide was heated on a sheet of pure palladium in air at 900°C, and allowed to furnace-cool over a period of several hours. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the powder showed approximately the same intensity of Rh2O3 and the "hexagonal" oxide as before, but, in addition, a rather faint pattern of another crystalline species made its appearance. This finding again suggests partial transformation of the major (double) oxide to other oxides on cooling from 900°C. Application of the phase rule shows that only one equilibrium oxide (subscale) could have been present at temperature. Vacuum-fusion, oxygen analysis of the extracted subscale showed 7.7 ± 0.7 pct O. Combining this information with that of the X-ray fluorescence analysis suggests the formula PdRhO. This compound should have an oxygen content of 7.07 pct, which is within the range of error of the oxygen analysis. However, until a more careful stoichiometric study is made, it is suggested that the formula be written

"Mining in multi-seam workings has been undertaken for many years in the VK Remnant pillars above and/or below current working areas have an important influence on retreat gateroad conditions at five of the remaining six deep coal mines. These interaction effects need lo be predicted ahead of mining so that longwall panels can be positioned to minimize roadway damage and to identify areas where additional support should be installed early into competent strata when and where it is most effective.Currently, three-dimensional elastic stress analysis using MAP3D is undertaken to predict local vertical and horizontal stress magnitudes during gateroad development and in front of the face on retreat. The predicted stress fields are often used as input to FLAC for roadway modelling.Using Maltby Colliery in South Yorkshire as a case study, this paper illustrates the MAP3D approach, together with its current limitations and uncertainties. Possible future improvements in the analysis method are proposed and the authors would welcome comments on these, or suggestions for alternative approaches.MODELLING OF MULTl-SEAM LAYOUT & MULTI-SEAM INTERACTIONThe remaining large coal mines in the UK arc operating at depths of 800-1, 150 m (2,625-3,773 ft). Production panels are now mined on retreat after the accompanying single entry access roadways have been completed. These gateroads are typically supported with a system of steel rock bolts and cable in the roof and steel bolts and glass re in forced polymer (G RP) dowels in the sidewalls.In addition to new panels being mined in the vicinity of old goafed districts, a significant amount of extraction has usually already taken place in coal seams above and/or below the current working areas. This means that there is also interaction between the current workings and the remnants of the old workings in other seams. As a consequence of the mining methods employed, old workings can have a complex geometry compri ing collapsed and partially collapsed excavations intersper ed with small and large pillars of unmined coal. The unmined coal pillar act as stress concentrators that carry the overburden load while the mined out excavations create stress shadows of varying degrees depending on how much collap e and reconsolidat ion has occurred. This is illustrated by a simple elastic model as shown in Figure I."

The objective of this work was to identify key parameters related to the reduction of the sulphur content in ammonium diuranate (ADU), and the identification of solid products being formed under various operating conditions. A laboratory-scale, continuous ADU precipitation circuit was assembled using a glass reactor vessel immersed in a temperature-controlled water bath. A pre-prepared uranium feed solution was fed continuously using a peristaltic pump. Anhydrous ammonia mixed with compressed air was metered and pumped using a double-headed peristaltic pump. An over-head mixer was used to keep the solids in suspension. The precipitated ADU slurry was removed from the reactor at the same flow rate as the feed solution. The slurry was sampled to generate ADU solids for chemical and physical analysis after four hours of continuous operation to ensure steady-state conditions. The following variables were studied to determine their influence on the sulphur content in the resulting ADU. (a) sulphate:uranium molar ratio in the reactor (1:1, 1:5, 1:10 and 1:20) (b) precipitation pH ( pH 6, 6.5, 6.9, 7.5 and 9) and (c) precipitation temperature (40C and 60C) A total of 18 tests covering the above parameters were conducted, and the results indicated that the sulphur content in the resulting solids was highly dependent on the reaction pH. Out of the pH levels tested, tests completed at pH 6.9 and 7.5 generated solids containing the lowest sulphur contents, between 0.5 to 1.5% S uranium basis (UB). The sulphur content in solids was found to vary linearly with the sulphate:uranium ratio in the feed solution, showing a statistically valid correlation. The impact of temperature was minor between 40°C and 60°C, with a slight advantage at higher temperatures. Tests at a sulphate:uranium ratio of 1:1 produced solids with the lowest sulphur contents. The influence of pH or temperature on sulphur content in solids was almost non-existent at this sulphate:uranium ratio. Precipitation pH is the major factor influencing ADU sulphur content, followed by the uranium to sulphate ratio.

"Increased demand resulting from the economic and environmental advantages of recycling secondary materials has constrained secondary material supply. As a result of constrained supply, the conventional strategy to maximize recycled content in an individual aluminum alloy must be expanded to maximizing total recycled content in a given production period. This work compares the performance over a two week period of an actual remelter for two strategies; a sequential charge-by-charge optimization framework and an integrated approach that explicitly incorporates the production schedule. Optimizing across the entire two week production is found to increase recycled content and minimize primary and alloying material additions. It is expected that as the scrap material market continues to be constrained by high demand, longer term batch planning strategies that can optimize material allocation will deliver improved performance.IntroductionIntensifying economic and environmental pressure to incorporate secondary aluminum into products is pushing remelters to explore additional strategies and tools to increase recycled content. Aluminum remelters are exploring alternative sources of secondary materials because of constrained secondary material supply and relatively high primary and secondary material cost [1]. Computational models, such as blending models are a tool that could help industrial remelters mitigate supply and cost challenges and thereby increase recycled content. In particular, computational tools can help manage the incorporation of new raw materials of variable quality. Blending models find many industrial applications and have been explored for over sixty years originating with the classic nut-mix problem dating back to 1950’s [2]. Blending models optimize the raw material input to make a desired product subject to a series of constraints such as product specifications and material availability. Deterministic and linear blending model formulations are presently implemented in some industrial aluminum remelters [3]. The primary reluctance of aluminum remelters against computational model implementation is the incapability of their blending models to reflect the intricacy of industrial remelting conditions [4]. For example, to reduce calculation time, industrial aluminum blending models usually optimize a batch plan for a single alloy and are not formulated to optimize several products simultaneously. Since such a model does not include knowledge of subsequent charges in the optimized batch plan, the resulting batch plans tend to deplete the “cleanest” secondary materials leaving the more uncertain and compositionally challenging materials for later charges. As a result, a remelter may override the calculated batch plan or leave certain scrap materials out of the material input to conserve these materials for alternative products scheduled for later production. This work explores an alternative aluminum charge planning tool that can optimize across an extended production schedule and compares it to a heuristic sequential optimization strategy reflecting an industrial remelter."

In order to meet increasing demands for water supply in the next millennium, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have identified the need for a major new water treatment and transfer scheme. The project now under construction will comprise a 1.2 km long raw water aqueduct, a major new 0.25million cubic metres per day water treatment works (with space for upgrading to 1.2Mm³/d), a 12.1 km long treated water aqueduct and a primary service reservoir. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Metallurgical Engineering) The weathering of kimberlite can be accelerated with cations in solution if swelling of the kimberlite occurs in contact with the weathering medium. The type and amount of swelling clays present, along with the surface charge and cation valence, determine the degree of swelling that can occur. Crystalline swelling occurs by the incorporation of cations in the interlayer spacing of the silica sheets. Kimberlite exposed to cupric cations showed very strong weathering, indicating that this type of weathering may be considered a viable process option. Kimberlite fines generated after weathering with monovalent cations showed poor settling behaviour compared to kimberlite weathered with di-, and trivalent cations.

THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. had an orebody at Miami, Ariz., of close to 100,000,000 tons of low-grade copper ore, and the method of mining this ore most profitably was of great importance. The selection of a method was practically limited to a "top-slicing," a "shrinkage-stope" or a "caving" method. The "top-slicing" method would give a high extraction of the developed ore, at a high mining cost, and the ?shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods ) a lower extraction of, the developed ore, at a lower mining cost. ORE-DRAWING TESTS To decide on the method to be used it was necessary to know about what extraction of the ore could be obtained by the "shrinkage-stope" or "caving" methods. As no definite information regarding the question was available at the time, C. E. Mills, the general manager, thought that some information could be obtained by experimenting in drawing ore, covered with capping, from an experimental box. Some work had already been done along these lines by W. C. Browning for the Inspiration Copper Co. and by myself for the Live Oak Development Co. The idea was to represent as nearly as possible, in the experimental box, the conditions within an area of caved stopes of caved ore all ready for drawing. That is, the area was supposed to represent a semibroken mass with the capping above it in the same condition and ready to follow the ore downward as it was drawn out of the chutes under the ore. To represent the above condition, in the experimental box, crushed ore from the mine was placed in it to a given height, and red barren capping from the mine was placed on top of the ore.

A summary of oil and gas development in Ohio for 1936 is necessarily brief and, in some details incomplete, owing to the lack of a central state agency for the collection of data and statistics on well drilling and production. The information used in this report was compiled from the records of the several companies operating in the state. Drilling activity in Ohio increased during 1936 as compared to the two preceding years. During the year 1157 wells were completed, as compared to 1022 wells in 1935 and 1055 wells in 1934. However, in spite of this increase in drilling activity, both oil and gas production declined for the year. Activity by Fields Trenton Sand Field.—The Trenton sand field is located in 15 counties of northwestern Ohio, trending from Toledo on the north, south and west through Findlay into Indiana. About 40 years ago the Trenton field was one of the most important oil-producing fields in the United States, but it has declined to a position of minor importance. During the year 1936 there were 52 completions in this field—29 gas wells, 19 oil wells and 4 dry holes. Clinton Sand Field.—The Clinton sand is by far the most important gas-producing field in the state. Production is located in small pools separated by nonproducing areas, on a band of varying width reaching from Cleveland on the north to Lawrence County on the Ohio River on the south. During 1936 a small pool of patchy character was developed in Butler township, Knox County. Seventeen wells were completed in the Clinton sand, of which 13 were gas wells and 4 were dry holes. The average initial production secured per well drilled, including dry holes, was 1,288,000 cu. ft. The average depth of the Clinton sand was 3000 feet. A gas well was completed in lot 9 of Franklin township, Tuscarawas County. Production was found in the first Clinton sand at a depth of 4354 ft. Ordinarily age-hardening is thought of as being associated with a limited solubility of one metal in another. Much less has been written about the type of age-hardening that attends the formation of superstructures. Solid solutions generally have a disordered or random arrangement of atoms; that is to say, in a unit cell, such as that of the face-centered cubic lattice, there is no distinction between atomic sites. Atoms of a given metal may occupy cube corners or face centers. Under certain conditions, however, some alloys develop what is known as an ordered structure. In this case, cube corners would be occupied by only one type of atom and face centers by another type. Associated with this ordering process are many interesting changes in physical and electrical properties. Moreover, in many instances the alloys become susceptible to age-hardening. From the evidence now to be described, it appears that age-hardening in 14-carat gold alloys is due to the formation of both a superstructure and a precipitate. Alloys of the metals gold, silver and copper were known in antiquity. The available knowledge regarding their constitution has been ably summarized and extended by Sterner-Rainer,' Jänecke,2 Carter,3 Wise,4 and Coleman.5 Despite the long familiarity with these alloys and the numerous investigations of their properties that have been made, there is still much that remains unexplained. It has been known for a long time that the hardness of these alloys is closely related to the rate of cooling. Similar changes have been observed in the binary gold-copper systemI6 one alloy of which corresponding to the formula CU³AU, has been the subject of a careful and competent report by the English investigators, Sykes and Evans.7 They have established the fact that the shift of atoms from the ordered to the disordered condition takes place in some critical temperature range. At temperatures above the critical range the structure is random, and at temperatures below it the structure is ordered. No difference between these two structures is revealed by the microscope. Both have a face-centered cubic lattice and complete solubility, so that there is no evidence to suggest that the changes in properties are associated with a phase change. The more slowly the alloy is cooled, the higher is the degree to which the ordering process proceeds and the more marked is the increase in hardness. As experimental data were accumulated on I4-carat gold alloys, several contradictions arose. Certain observations tended to confirm the existence of a superstructure, while other observations seemed to be inconsistent with such a transformation. "Orway Mineral Consultants Ltd (OMC) as a consultancy has specialized in comminution circuit design for over 30 years. The OMC Power Model is OMC’s in-house software for specific grinding energy power-based circuit calculations. The model uses ore hardness parameters from testwork, circuit configuration, equipment geometry and operating conditions as inputs. The model combines proprietary and published power models to predict the total specific energy and the specific energy for each of the components of the comminution circuit. This makes the software a valuable tool for the design and validation of JKSimMet modelling or actual plant performance. Proprietary calculations have been developed and reconciled with over 100 plant benchmark projects encompassing a variety of comminution circuit configurations.This paper describes the OMC approach for determining power requirements for the design of grinding circuits. The accuracy of the OMC Power Model software is confirmed through plant survey benchmark performance and comparisons are made with other power modelling techniques. Practical examples are presented, showing applications for single stage SAG (SS-SAG), SAB and SABC circuit configurations.IntroductionConventional low throughput grinding options, consisting of multi-stage crushing followed by rod and ball mills, have almost become obsolete in the move to higher milling rates required to process lower metal grades. Grinding circuits with fully autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, often combined with ball mills are now the standard to meet the high capacity requirement for processing ores with lower metal grades. Simulation software and power-based equation methodologies have been established for designing AG/SAG based grinding circuits and predicting their energy requirements.Presently, power-based equations remain the principal method for designers to size mills and estimate the power requirement for comminution circuits. The technique is simple and it relies on the design to specify a feed and product size plus a hardness index to produce a specific energy value (kWh/t). The desired throughput of the mill is multiplied by the specific energy to give the mill power requirement, which is used in turn to size a mill for dimensions, internal geometry and loading conditions to match the power draw."

The penetration of rock fragments of overlying strata causes advanced ore dilution during drawing. The results of numerical and physical experiments showed that the proposed numerical simulation was applicable and the microscopic parameters of the model were reliable. The penetration under the variables of particle diameter ratio, density ratio, overlying strata thickness, and particle morphology was clarified. The penetration was quantitatively characterized by the discharge amount and the dilution rate. The experimental results showed that the diameter ratio and density ratio had a significant influence on the penetration. On the irregular shape of particles, the penetration is weakened. The overlying strata thickness had little effect on the penetration. This study could provide a theoretical basis for the full section uniform drawing, avoiding advanced ore dilution and further optimization of recovery rate.

Cationic flotation using alkylamines and their derivatives as collectors, and characterized by high selectivity of mineral particle separation, is finding ever growing industrial application. In recent years the industrial application has been initiated of new cationic collectors - alkylmorpholines. Efficiency of cationic surfactants operation as collectors is dependent upon their colloid and sorption properties and the availability of silicate .carbonate rock-forming mineral impurities in the ore, which sorb the cationic collector. Investigations have been carried out on the influence of frothers and organic depressors with various compositions upon physical-chemical and flotation properties of alkylamines and alkylmorpholines. On the basis of these investigations requirements for organic depressor were developed and new flotation reagents were proposed (V-1 frother and KS-MF depressor). The use of new reagents enables one to decrease considerably the consumption of expensive cationic collectors and to enhance the floatability of coarse mineral particles. Data of new reagents industrial application is presented. The reagents developed can be used for flotation processing of other ores.

A number of terrane reconstructions conflict with global plate histories or with data from adjacent regional studies. Paleogeographic maps have ignored terranes thus are over-simplified. This paper represents an attempt to "marry" Mesozoic global plate reconstructions and terrane analysis to produce examples of a "third generation" of global plate tectonic maps. The best approach to global terrane analysis involves intercomparison of all regional data and the evolving global model. Data conflicts within and between terranes and regions must be resolved by a system of relative data reliability "weighting." The most reliable and useful data are those which constrain "departure" (rift) and "arrival" (collision) times. Certain ad hoc decisions aid in the analysis (e.g. only one net vector allowed per plate). The maps that follow summarize Early Mesozoic global tectonic history at three critical junctures: 240 MA (Triassic); 180 MA (Jurassic); and 120 MA (Cretaceous). Due to space limitations, maps drawn at 20 m.y. intervals appear elsewhere. A preliminary Middle Triassic reconstruction is presented in Figure 1. Major plates and continental blocks are labeled; smaller blocks are marked with abbreviations. Examination of Figure 1 indicates the necessity of modeling Triassic tectonics with at least 68 blocks. Spalling- off of microcontinental slivers from Gondwanaland is active some 70 m.y. before the actual breakup of the supercontinent. In the SW sector of the Pacific, the Australian margins were embroidered with several terranes (e.g. Sumba) which eventually rifted away and crossed Tethys. The NW sector at this time included 10 microcontinental chips forming a huge archipelago along the Asian margin. All blocks inboard of Indochina collided by latest Triassic. Terranes of the NE sector include several (e.g. Arctic Alaska) along the North American margin, and at least six large blocks (e.g. Stikinia) drifting SE with the Farallon Plate. The SE sector

For many years the author has been cognizant of the difficulty encountered by some in treating with the water influx formulas for unsteady-state fluid flow as pertain to the material balance equation. This has particularly applied in establishing reservoir performance and identifying reservoir pressure, which to the practicing engineer has entailed a trial-and-error procedure, and for others has necessitated resorting to computing devices and reiteration processes. In retrospect this difficulty stems from the fact that reservoir pressure in the material balance formulas, as well as associated with the water influx equations, is an inexplicit term, and the work reported in the past is irrefutable. However, what will be presented in this paper is another approach to the problem, whereby the entire material balance equation will be treated by the Laplace transformation, and reservoir pressure which hereto has been inexplicit, can now be isolated by mathematical procedure to relate that parameter with all the factors contributing to its change. This is the simplification entailed, that treats first with an undersaturated oil reservoir as an integrated effect from the inception of production. The second phase pertains to saturated oil reservoirs that encompass a survey traverse. Although both methods of approach are necessarily different in aspect, the most interesting fact is that the mathematics so deduced are identical. Both the linear and radial water-drive systems are incorporated. for which an illustrated factual example is offered for the latter, treating with a saturated oil reservoir. INTRODUCTIO N What is performed in this work is the simplification of an involved computation by advanced analysis. Although such may be construed as a contradiction when one treats with higher mathematics; nevertheless, when direction is given to such an undertaking the results car. be most revealing. Likewise, it is to be mentioned that the bases for these mathematics have been developed on the expediency of the occasion. This is not to be inferred as a qualification of this work, but rather the demands frequently placed upon the author in his private prac- tice in meeting a time limit. A situation, instead of being fraught with hazards, often has given emphasis to creative thought. What will be entailed in this work is the simplification of the material balance formulas by the Laplace Transformation., Although this reveals entirely new horizons that will be given expression in a forthcoming tract, it suffices in the present instance to limit our attention to this phase of the development that treats both with an undersaturated and saturated oil reservoir. To orient the reader's thoughts as to what is involved in this simplification is the recognition that reservoir pressure, as such, is an inexplicit term in the material balance equation. This is the independent parameter that defines the total history of performance in the author's' unsteady-state water influx formulas, as well as the basis for the physical dependency of fluid behavior within the formation as prescribed in the Schil-thuis' material balance equation. Therefore, to isolate reservoir pressure, which is the most essential factor in any reservoir study, is rather a cumbersome procedure entailing either a trial-and-error calculation for the engineer; or as some prefer, a reiteration process performed on a computing device. However, once such an equation can be transcribed as a Laplace transformation, this inexplicitness so expressed can be alleviated to identify reservoir pressure as an explicit function of all the factors contributing to its change. This is the simplification encompassed, that will treat first with an undersaturated oil reservoir as an integrated effect from the inception of production, and secondly, with a saturated oil reservoir as a survey traverse. Although the two approaches are necessarily different because of the uhvsics involved. it is an interesting commentary that the mathematics are identical, showing the interdependency of the two methods. In order to acquaint the reader with this development, the simplest case will be treated first; namely, an under-saturated oil reservoir subject to a linear water drive. However, what may be construed for this example as an idealistic case is actually a most practical application in certain parts of the world, where the size of the fields are so large that radial water-drive approaches the configuration of a linear drive. "The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

In an earlier paper (Stanton, 1953) a brief account was given of the geological environment and structure of the Lloyd Copper Mine orebody, Burraga, N.S.W. The present paper is concerned with the chemical and mineralogical features of the ore from this mine.Investigation has been made difficult because of inaccessibility of the workings, which have been fallen in for many years. The exact positions within the orebody of the specimens described in this paper are known in only a few cases. The specimens examined are from the collections of the Mining and Australian Museums, Sydney, and from material collected by the writer from the upper parts of the mine and from various dumps about the old workings.However, no significant variations in the nature (as distinct from grade) of the ore have been mentioned in the old reports, or by Carne (1908) or Kenny (1928), so it is likely that the specimens examined are reasonably representative of the orebody as a whole.CHEMICAL CONSTITUTIONThe ore is of simple and apparently very uniform composition.It is essentially a copper ore, with minor amounts of zinc and very minor amounts of lead. Plotting of copper against zinc shows a more or less sympathetic relationship between these at least as far as 20 per cent. copper - the highest grade assayed during the present investigation. The trend of the plots indicates a Cu/Zn ratio of about 15/1 to this point. Lead is very low and extremely sporadic, showing no clear relationships with the other metals.MINERAL COMPOSITIONThe principal non-opaque minerals are quartz and sericite, and these are accompanied by smaller quantities of muscovite, calcite and biotite.
