Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll on the U.S. coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicate that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied to reduce dust levels. An overview of CWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

To the best of our knowledge, this paper comprehensively summarizes a thorough study to determine the thermodynamic viability of the reactions between light rare earth oxides and chlorine with and without carbon. The kinetics and mechanisms of light rare earth oxide chlorination and carbochlorination reactions are analyzed and discussed according to results in the literature. Lanthanides between lanthanum (La) and gadolinium (Gd) are considered as light rare earth elements (LREEs) in agreement with previous literature and the results detailed in this review. Both laboratory- and industrial-scale light rare earth chlorinations and carbochlorinations, starting from oxides and ores, are reviewed.

The Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting as a part of this report the second of a series of maintenance cost comparisons. The committee's purpose is to assemble maintenance costs on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mining and to arrange these costs by districts so that comparisons can be made between districts and within districts. The committee, this year, sent 35 questionnaires to representative coal companies who either reported last year or had advised specifically of the inability to report to last year's questionnaire primarily because of limited time. The response to the questionnaire this year as not as good as last year, only 20 of the 35 selected companies returning a completed questionnaire. This year's data have been compiled and combined with last year's data to present a comparison of the 1945 and 1946 costs of loading machines, shortwall cutting machines, universal cutting machines, service locomotives, shuttle cars, and mine cars. The same tabulation by districts is used as was used for 1945. As was indicated by last year's report there is considerable variation in the in cost of mining machinery in the various coal mining districts and due to this high variability it was not felt practical to attempt to arrive at weighted averages. Consequently, all average figures used in this report are straight averages. An analysis was made of companies reporting both this year and last year in an attempt to determine the trend in maintenance costs for different classes of equipment. Ten representative companies are used in this computation. Table I shows the average cost for 1945 and 1946. It is felt that the negative trend in the maintenance cost of universal cutting machines probably represents the effect of the purchase of a relatively large number of new machines in 1946 with little maintenance cost appearing during the first Year of operation. The grand total figure indicates an upward trend amounting to plus 18.7 pet. However, this figure is viewed with some suspicion because of the effect of the universal cutters decreasing maintenance cost and it is concluded that direct application of percentage increase should be made to types of equipment. In this experimental investigation, the principal operating parameters of the spirals HC 1870 and HG 8/7 are determined for the hydrogravimetric separation of the friable siliceous iron minerals of the Piar Distric, Venezuela. Mineralogical characterization including optical microscopy of feeding materials and the products after separation are presented. Comparative analysis is made of effectiveness of productivity between the two spirals.

"Comparative tests of the conventional Turam survey configuration and an alternative configuration called the Tx-parallel configuration were conducted at the McClean uranium deposit in northern Saskatchewan. Both configurations detected the known conductors at the site but the alternative configuration demonstrated its particular effectiveness in the reconnaissance role. This effectiveness results from the fact that the length of Tx-parallel traversesis controlled only by the length ofthe transmitter and not by its power. In addition, the field strength along a Tx-parallel traverse is uniform unless the traverse approaches the end of the transmitter. This freedom from a strong gradient of the primary field along a Tx-parallel traverse eliminates the gradient-induced anomaly shifts which are common in conventional Turam operations. The locations of each of the McClean conductors, that were obtained from the Tx-parallel profiles, werein better agreement with the locations known from drilling than were the locations obtained from the conventional profiles. However, the conventional profiles gave better estimates of the conductance of the targets.The results obtained over the McClean conductors indicate that current gathering has a strong influence on Tx-parallel results with consequent unpredictable influence on depth and conductance estimates. However, the depth estimates obtained from the Tx-parallel data appear to be in good agreement with the known depth of the McClean south conductor. The Txparallel results provide shallow estimates of the depth of the McClean north conductor which suggest that the fracture zone above the graphitic conductor is a significant conductor as was also suggested by earlier VLF surveys.Comparison with the wide range of published geophysical test surveys for the McClean site showed that apart from the work required to lay the transmitter, the Tx-parallel mode of operation of a Turam exploration system is operationally very similar to a moving source Slingram type of survey. At the McClean test site, it provided the same depth of exploration as a conventionally deployed fixed loop transmitter."

The Bureau of Mines conducted bench-scale cyclic tests to determine the composition of recycled leach liquor in the Bureau?s proposed clay/HCl leach/ HCl sparge process for producing Al203 from clay. The data developed from these tests make it possible to synthesize leach liquors for predetermined steady-state operating conditions when conducting large-scale crystallization tests. The results of two sparge tests were compared. One was a 20-cycle test with a 36-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor; the other was a 10-cycle test with a 26-pct-HCl concentration in the mother liquor. The effect of impurity concentrations in the leach liquor on the purity of aluminum chloride (AlCl30?6H20) crystals was determined, but there was poor correlation between this data and results that have been obtained from miniplant-scale work.

Tracer gases have been utilized successfully in a variety of industries, each with specific releasing and sampling methods. The various attributes of tracer gases are dependent on the industry the tracers are utilized in. Tracers must be chemically and thermally stable, safe, odorless, detectable at low concentrations, have a low background concentration, and should not be naturally occurring in the environment if they are utilized in underground mining applications (Thimons et al., 1974). In addition, the tracer gas should be inexpensive, non-corrosive, non-toxic, easily transportable, readily attainable, and non-radioactive (Kennedy et al., 1987). Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) met many of these above requirements and therefore was introduced as an ideal tracer gas to use in mining industry in the early 1970?s (Thimons et al., 1974). Due to the nature of underground mining including complicated geometry, irregular flows, turbulent flows, obstructed airways, and leakages it is difficult to use conventional anemometer and smoke tube techniques to accurately measure the effectiveness of ventilation controls (Thimons et al., 1974; Klinowski and Kennedy, 1991). There have been several applications of SF6 as a tracer gas in underground metal/non-metal and coal mines. Thimons et al. conducted early testing of SF6 in an underground limestone mine and determined that it is an effective technique for evaluating auxiliary fans, estimating volumetric flow rates in large areas, and measuring low flow velocities. A rapid face ventilation measurement method (FVM) utilizing SF6 was developed by the Bureau of Mines to make face measurements in underground coal mines (Timko and Thimons, 1982). When measuring the effectiveness of jet fans in dead headings SF6 was proven more effective than smoke tubes (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Experiments related to determining methane liberation in the gob were also conducted by injecting SF6 into a borehole (Timko and Thimons, 1982). Also, in an emergency situation where the gob had to be sealed due to a fire, SF6 was released to determine the effectiveness of the seals (Timko and Thimons, 1982).

The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

CBI is especially suited to the monitoring of training functions and to the delivery of competency-based task training. The mineralogical and textural characteristics of the volcanogenic massive sulphide ores from the Aljustrel and Neves-Corvo deposits have been studied by ore microscopy techniques since 1977. Several ore types have been recognized, and the ore paragenesis, ore textures, and behaviours of different ore types during grinding and concentration processes, have been determined. An ore classification was established for use in metallogenetic studies, ore reserve calculations, selectivity during mining, and control of the ore beneficiation processes. In addition, an empirical method was developed for supplying, on time, the qualitative and semi-quantitative information needed for processing the Aljustrel ores and for optimizing the Neves-. Corvo copper and tin concentrators.

Weakening rocks by taking advantage of microwave-induced microcracks is a promising solution for comminution processes. This paper investigates the effects of microwave treatment of the rock/or samples in single and multi-mode cavities. Based on the experimental results of using a 2.45 GHz microwave generator, the performance of different cavity setups and their impact on the energy effectiveness of the microwave irradiation was examined. Physical interpretations were drawn from multiple experiments with a relatively wide range of power rates and exposure times. Both basalt and kimberlite samples were used in experiments, and their results were systematically compared. For single-mode cavity tests, a microwave applicator waveguide antenna was placed at different distances from the samples to evaluate the effects of sample positioning on microwave heating, both numerically and experimentally. Eventually, cavity performance was assessed by using calorimetric test results, and strength decay was documented based on the spallation of the samples. It was found that the singlemode cavity setup has unique properties that can significantly improve the electromagnetic heating and therefore, strength degradation process. "In this paper, the mechanism of the carbothermic reduction-chlorination process to extract aluminum from alumina in vacuum was investigated. The carbon monoxide (CO) content of the gas, phases of the reduction slag, surface morphology of the reduction slag and the product aluminum were measured by means of gas chromatography (GC), XRD, and SEM. The experimental results indicated that the content of CO in the gas decreased, but Al4C3 increased with time at 1773K during the carbothermic reduction process of alumina. AlCl(g) and graphite (C) were produced by the reaction between Al4C3 and AlCh(g) at 1773K, and then aluminum beads generated after the decomposition of AlCl(g). It implied the mechanism of alumina carbothermic reduction-chlorination process in vacuum involves three steps as follows: the carbothermic reduction of A}z03 to produce Al4C3, the chlorination of Al4C3 by AlCh(g) to produce AlCl(g), and the decomposition of AlCl(g) to produce Al(l).IntroductionAluminum is the basic raw material for many industries [1], and it is used extensively because of various excellent properties such as light weight, good malleability, high strength, excellent thermal conduction, high corrosion resistance and so on [2]. Industrial production of aluminum currently includes refining alumina and electrolytic aluminum processes. However, its development has been effected by some factors such as high energy consumption and heavy environmental burdens [3]. In the past several decades, there had been numerous attempts to produce aluminum by new methods. Extracting aluminum from alumina or bauxite directly by carbothermic reduction-chlorination process had been studied [ 4-6]. Although the alumina carbothermic reduction process [7~9] had been studied, the mechanism of the carbothermic reduction-chlorination process had not been systematically elucidated.In order to investigate the mechanism of the carbothermic reduction-chlorination process in vacuum, GC, XRD and SEM techniques will be used to determine the CO content and to characterize the surface morphology and composition of the slags at various temperatures."

"One of the main problems for storing of the tailings is acidity occurrence due to several factors such as existence of sulfuric minerals and also the pollution in seepage waters by mobilization of metal ions, which holds great risks in terms of environmental regulations. Because of these specified reasons, tailing materials to be used in a SPD formula should have comply with some specifications. Among these properties; oxygen content, temperature, matrix suction and pH are the most important parameters. In the study, the relationships between the parameters mentioned are investigated to reveal optimum paste design layout. The lowest amount of seepage water obtained from the paste layers in the pilot cabinet was found as 2150 ml from 3rd layer. As for the maximum seepage water and the average of the all 11 layers were found as 4909 ml from 6th layer and 3273 ml respectively. The reactions occurring according to the oxidation, as seen at seepage water of second and third layers, decreased the pH of system to the under of 7 value. Additionally, when the seepage water of first layer’s EC value is 2.93 mS/cm, the EC value of second layer is increased at 3.54 mS/cm. The other parameters are evaluated with the obtained results of the tests to determine the optimum storing conditions for SPD.INTRODUCTION Conventional waste disposal methods, although widely used, pose great environmental risks. One of the most important issues is acid mine drainage (AMD). Tailings of metallic mines contain heavy metals, aggressive chemicals and hazardous materials. In the presence of oxygen and water, an oxidation reaction can occur, causing a decrease in pH of the environment, and heavy metals that are present in the environment can dissolve easily. Subsequently, heavy metals can pollute underground water basins, creating a great amount of danger for the ecology and potable water resources. Another important risk associated with conventional waste disposal methods is accidents related to the waste dam. Higher volumes of water and tailings (usually 15% solids and 85% water by weight) are sent to waste dams, making it very difficult to control the stability of the dam under conditions such as static and dynamic loads (seismic activities, vibrations caused by blasting, etc.), flooding, and seepage. In case of an accident or failure, the spread of great amounts of mud containing hazardous chemicals and heavy metals can harm the environment of the dam site significantly (Bascetin et al., 2014). In the paste technology, depending on the type of ore, tailings used in the paste mixture can contain sulphide minerals (such as pyrite and pyrrhotite). These minerals are known to be reactive with water and oxygen to produce acidity (sulphuric acid)."

In recent years there has been an Increasing Interest In the application of automatic control theory to mineral processing systems, and numerous applications of mineral process control have appeared in the literature. A general approach to the synthesis of mineral process control systems is presented. The first phase of the control system design consists of specifying the control objectives, process variables and their interactions; these topics will be discussed with specific reference to mineral processing. The second phase Is con¬cerned with selection of control strategies algorithms, instrumenta¬tion, and other components of the control system and is discussed at length. These concepts are then illustrated by a flotation control case study.

There are three principle lines of evidence that indicate the clay minerals found in the Goathill North (GHN) rock pile at the Molycorp mine are predominantly a product of hydrothermal alteration, not weathering. The unweathered drill core and samples from GHN have similar types and abundances of clay-mineral groups based on XRD analysis. Chemical analyses from the electron microprobe reveal similar chemical compositions for the hydrothermal alteration clays in drill-core samples and clays found in the rock pile. Textural evidence gathered from petrographic and microprobe examination also suggests a hydrothermal origin for clay minerals.

IN connection with other investigations on the properties and characteristics of chilled iron car wheels, the question as to the best range of annealing temperatures was raised. Chilled-iron wheels are cast with a chill against the tread and the inside of the flange, the remainder being in sand. The composition of the metal is so chosen that under these conditions the tread and inside of the flange will show white iron to a depth of from 5/8 to 7/8 in. (15 to 22 mm.), the remainder of the wheel becoming graphitized or gray. In order to relieve the stresses set up during cooling under such drastic conditions, the wheels are stripped from the mold, while still red hot, piled in a soaking pit, and allowed to cool very slowly from their temperature at stripping. Obviously the most suitable temperature for this annealing is the highest at which no formation of graphite occurs within the white tread and at which the wheels can be stripped from the molds. Inasmuch as no direct determinations have been made of the temperatures at which the' formation, of graphite takes place in white iron of compositions used in car wheels upon annealing, it was considered worth while to determine these temperatures as a means of establishing the maximum temperatures at which the annealing of the wheels may be carried out. In the course of this work, some incidental observations were made which are of interest in connection with the theory of graphitization in white iron. The literature on the subject of the formation of graphite both during cooling at casting and upon annealing is very extensive and can be best studied by reference to a comprehensive discussion of the subject by Hatfield. 1 Perhaps the most important contributions of previous investigation are the following: 1. Whether a given mass of molten iron becomes white, mottled, or gray upon casting, depends on its composition and its rate of cooling through the temperature range of solidification and immediately below.
