The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. By designing comminution circuits for mineral liberation rather than the final recovery process and by using high mass pull gravity recovery, the concept of underground processing has become a reality. Gekko has found that many ores respond favourably to fine crushing with either high pressure grinding rolls or vertical shaft impactors which when combined with the InLine Pressure Jig gravity separator and coarse flotation results in a narrow, low-head, compact processing plant that can be sensibly fitted in existing underground openings. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirements of the plant to approximately 5 kWh/t for a capacity of up to 20 t/h run of mine ore feed. The use of water recycle systems places no extra load on the mineÆs normal water handling system. GekkoÆs underground processing plant, the æPythonÆ, has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a significant operating cost-saving, lower cut-off grade and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

The Buick Concentrator is a highly automated operation which utilizes a process control system for continuous monitoring and control. The process control system development, installation, and application to the concentrator grinding and flotation circuits are presented in this paper. The design and implementation of analog field sensing instrumentation, a continuous on-stream X-ray analyzer, grinding and classfication circuit controls, and a recent digital process control system utilizing a centralized computer are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the project planning and installation of the digital control system including a presentation of future plans for continuing application of computer control.

An analysis of an iron ore processing plant showed that its performance was affected by seasonal temperature variations, resulting in reduced grinding efficiency in the winter months. Laboratory and pilot plant studies were conducted to determine the cause of the observed loss of efficiency at lower temperatures. Experiments were divided into two groups: 1) Drop testing, which was performed to determine the effect of brittleness and frozen pore water on the breakage characteristics of the ore. 2) Wet grinding, which was further divided into laboratory tumble tests and pilot plant scale tests. Laboratory tumble tests were performed to determine the effect of temperature on the grinding of iron ore. This was done by varying the percentage of fines and percentage of metamorphic clay material added to the iron ore grinding charge. The pilot plant scale tests were conducted as a scale-up of the laboratory tumble tests and to determine the effect of temperature on slurry rheology, and how this changing rheology affected the grinding of iron ore. The combined results of drop testing and wet grinding were used to make some predictions of the performance of plant scale autogenous grinding. In drop tests the breakage characteristics of the iron ore had no noticeable change in size stabilities for dry and water saturated samples over the temperature range studied (-25°C to 25°C). The effect of frozen pore water was not observed due to the low apparent porosity of the iron ore. The addition of fines to the test charge caused a decrease in the amount of new fines produced for both the laboratory tumble tests and pilot plant scale tests. The production of fines further decreased when tests were performed at the colder temperature. The increased energy consumption at lower temperatures was dominated by rheology phenomena. The addition of metamorphic clay material to the iron ore test charge resulted in more fines being produced in the laboratory tumble tests. This was due to the metamorphic clay material grinding easier than the iron ore. This caused an increase in the amount of fines in the mill, which in turn, would prematurely slow down the grinding of iron ore because of an increase in the viscosity of the slurry.

A study of subsurface waste disposal in the United States shows that in eight States a wide variety of industrial wastes are being injected into formations ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent. More than 30 wells ranging in depth from 300 to 12,000 feet are used for waste disposal into subsurface formations which include unconsolidated sand, sandstone, vugular limestone, and fractured gneiss.

Jetstream pressure distributions and coal cutting rates were determined for a number of nozzles and under different operating conditions. The jetstrearn pressure distribution data were fitted to an assumed curvilinear equation by the utilization of a numerical least-squares technique with the aid of a digital computer. Subsequent manipulation of the approximation equation showed that the total force of the jetstream, rather than its maximum pressure or total kinetic energy per unit Lime, was the most significant quantity affecting the coal cutting rate. A shorter method for assessing the ability of a nozzle to cut coal was found.

Explosive pockets of methane-air mixtures accumulate in underground coal mines and, when ignited, produce an air-blast wave that can disturb combustible coal dust on the floor, roof, and ribs. To prevent explosions, the coal dust must be continuously diluted through application of inert rock dust, usually powdered limestone. Application of powdered dust process creates a respiratory nuisance downwind, where miners cannot work until the dust settles. Rock dust suppliers have developed wet and foam applied products to reduce the nuisance and limit the interruption to mining during dust application. To test the effectiveness of these alternative dust products, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) have constructed a full-scale explosion test drift located at the Mines Edgar Experimental Mine (Edgar) to study the dispersibility of different rock dust applications. This paper examines the use of Pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) detonating cord to produce controlled air-blasts that simulate methane-air explosions. The air blasts are generated with curtains of detonating cord that produce shockwaves with wind speeds between 30 to 70 m/s (100 to 225 fps) depending on the length of 5.3 g/m (25 grain/ft) detonating cord used. These velocities represent the minimum air speeds required to trigger propagating coal dust explosions. Researchers have conducted 40 test blasts with various lengths of detonating cord. Results show the two primary waves and two reflected waves each decaying into airblast waves with overpressures of 14 to 27 kPa (2 to 4 psi). Pressures were recorded with commercial piezoelectric transducers and custom-built, bi-directional probes to record the total and dynamic pressures of the wind generated in the explosion. Researchers were able to generate consistent and repeatable wind speeds and air-blast durations sufficiently similar to a methane-air explosion to study the dispersibility of various rock dust products and application methods

A new minerals initiative to increase the level of understanding of New Zealand's mineral resources and to promote the development of minerals began earlier in the year in a partnership pilot-project between Crown Minerals and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS). The project aims to gather a set of comprehensive geoscientific data and build a series of digital GIS packages to highlight New Zealand's mineral prospectivity. The pilot study was carried out at a regional scale, and is focussed on mesothermal gold mineralisation in the South Island. A significant amount of geological data and information was sourced from open file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and from various databases held by GNS and has now been compiled into a single GIS dataset, which will soon be made freely available to interested parties. In addition to this comprehensive data compilation, prospectivity modelling using Weights of Evidence techniques was undertaken to highlight those areas likely to contain ore deposits. It is clear from this study that the South Island of New Zealand remains highly prospective for mesothermal gold mineralisation. Many of the highly prospective areas, which also contain historic mine workings, remain open for exploration. The study not only highlights these areas, but also other areas where the potential for similar mineralisation exists, in all likelihood with no surface expression. The study has also highlighted the value of many of the open-file technical reports held by Crown Minerals and the need to carry out additional studies using this and other available data at a more detailed level, possibly as the basis for a web-based minerals information system.

The earthquake locations are generally scattered mainly due to a simplified velocity model or seismic event picking errors. The aim of our research was to increase the resolution of the cloud of microseismic events recorded during mining activity in the Bobrek hard coal mine on the 3/503 coalface to delineate seismically active structures using unsupervised machine learning algorithms. We presented results of applying two completely different algorithms for reducing scatter in microseismic location to all events recorded during mining activity on the coalface - the collapsing (proposed by Jones and Stewart in 1997) and condensation (proposed by Kamer in 2015). The collapsing method simplifies the seismic cloud by shifting events inside their error ellipsoids towards local source densities. The error ellipsoids are determined by errors in the measured parameters and seismic network configuration. The advantage of the collapsing method is the partial elimination of blurring of the microseismic cloud. The condensation method reduces the size of the set of seismic events without changing the geometrical information. The reduction of the number of seismic events in the catalog takes place through the condensation of localized events with larger uncertainty into events with lower uncertainty. The spatio-temporal analysis of microseismic events was performed separately on two processed clouds – collapsed and condensed one. We examined how collapsing and condensation methods affect the automatic detection of clusters of microseismicity using density-based spatial clustering of application with noise algorithms. We compared structures detected by the machine learning algorithms in both seismic clouds first created by collapsing and second by the condensation. We identified structures created by mining activity and structures related to the local tectonics activated by mining. The presented results are essential for the prediction of future tremors induced by the mining operation and tectonics and thus ensuring safety in the mine.

Since the initial discovery of phosphate rock resources in North West Queensland in 1966, significant changes in ownership and development direction have occurred. Initially development of the resource involved beneficiation to produce a more saleable grade of phosphate rock. However more recently development has focused on the production of a high analysis fertilizer product on the minesite. These changes have been influenced by economics, industry/government cooperation and a changing phosphate industry.

The exhausted Santa Barbara open pit mine (Tuscany, Italy), owned by the main electric power company in Italy (ENEL S.p.A,) extracted lignite as a fuel for the Santa Barbara thermoelectric power plant. The mining activity led to the excavation of a wide slope (with maximum height of 200 m and a planar extension of about 1300 m x 500 m) in the Shale Limestone Chaotic Complex (SLCC) (Figure 1). Since the beginning of its excavation the slope underwent rotational landslides and diffuse instability phenomena. From a geotechnical point of view the SLCC represents a typical bimrock (block-in-matrix rock) (Medley 1994, Medley 2002, Medley 2007) characterized by a mixture of a highly sheared, scaly-fabric, clayey matrix and calcareous blocks ranging from a few millimetres to tens of metres in size. Since the geometrical properties of blocks (grain-size distribution, shape, orientation and volumetric proportion) have been proved to influence the mechanical behaviour of bimrocks (Lindquist & Goodman 1994, Goodman & Ahlgren 2000, Kim et al. 2004, Sonmez et al. 2006), the aim of the present study is to investigate the geometrical properties of calcareous blocks in order to properly characterize the mechanical behaviour of the SLCC bimrock and to further assess the stability of the slope. Block size-distribution and shape were investigated by means of advanced image analysis techniques of SLCC pictures taken in the field. Geostatistical semivariograms and variographic maps were also used in order to investigate the anisotropy of block spatial distribution. Finally, in-situ large sized sieving tests were carried out to investigate the volumetric block proportion within the clayey matrix.

Mientras que en la minería a tajo abierto es usual realizar planificación estratégica, en las operaciones subterráneas, debido a la complejidad de cada yacimiento, no existe un sistema normalizado para evaluar y optimizar la forma del área de la mina y su producción para obtener el valor real más alto. El objetivo del presente trabajo técnico es mostrar un sistema robusto capaz de optimizar y programar los depósitos subterráneos. Para ello, se evalúan múltiples escenarios de planes mineros en 3D en un plan minero de mina subterránea, analizando en poco tiempo diferentes variables, mostrando la robustez del planeamiento y analizando la incertidumbre asociada a las variables más relevantes. Se presenta un flujo de trabajo completo y práctico que ha mejorado los valores y reducido los riesgos de un proyecto subterráneo.

Retaining walls for the construction of underground urban infrastructures have to be executed considering the impact of a deep foundation job-site within an urban network. Traditional excavation systems, based on the use of grabs and bentonite mud, involve serious problems such as: the opening of trenches adjacent to existing buildings; the cleaning of the working area; the site installation for the production and storage of the bentonite mud; the transport and disposal of soil contaminated with bentonite mud. Alternative solutions have therefore been developed in order to overcome these problems. For temporary works soil consolidation methods, combined with the use of sheet piles, have been implemented, by a combination of traditional mixing methods and jet grouting systems to speed up the operations, consequently reducing the construction time. For permanent works two new techniques named respectively CSP (Cased Secant Piles) and CDW (Continuous Diaphragm Walls) have been studied, applied and tested.

It was determined by the authors that the water that remains in the filter cake after filtration in iron ore concentrators can contain several hundred times greater concentrations of calcium ions and other cations, due to surface chemical effects carrying the ions along with the water. Filter cake from two plants was analyzed. The water retained in samples of magnetite concentrate filter cake in Plant 1 contained 5088 ppm calcium and 5995 ppm magnesium, while the Plant 2 filter cake contained 231 ppm calcium and 119 ppm magnesium. These levels were dramatically elevated compared to the water that was removed from the concentrate by filtration for recycle to the plants (9 ppm calcium/15 ppm magnesium for Plant 1, and 11.9 ppm calcium/9.3 ppm magnesium in Plant 2). In addition to possible effects on agglomeration performance, the presence of these cations also affected the efficiency of filtration. In order to reduce the effects of these cations on filtration in Plant 2, carbon dioxide was injected into the slurry before it entered the filter press. This was found to increase filtration rates by up to 23.7%. Comparison of the results from the two plants shows that the concentrations of cations present in the filter cake will vary greatly from plant to plant, with correspondingly large variations in their effects on plant operations.

It is now recognised that rotary sample division is by far the best laboratory tool for extracting subsamples from a lot of material. In terms of sampling theory, rotary division, by virtue of the fact that it can extract many increments from the lot during the division process, radically reduces the variance due to distributional heterogeneity in the sample being divided. There are a number of occasions in sample preparation when it is necessary to extract a subsample of a target mass. To do this with rotary dividers taking a fixed fraction of the starting mass is a tedious task. In response to this problem, a variable split sample divider has been designed and built for the mineral industry. This paper discusses the utility of the device and presents test data showing that the machine is capable of making accurate mass split while overcoming segregation in the material being divided.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report evaluates the load supporting characteristics of grout columns used as point supports for mine subsidence abatement. The cone-shaped columns were constructed with sodium silicate and cementitious grout in both wet and dry environments. The scope of work included the testing of seven full-scale grout columns in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator from which the load-deformation and failure characteristics were determined. The performances of grout columns are analyzed with respect to (1) the amount of roof contact established during column construction, (2) shape effects produced by the truncated cone geometry, (3) size effects in reference to grout strength and full-scale column capacity, (4) the effect of wet environments on grout strength, (5) the effect of the sodium silicate on the grout strength and full-scale column behavior, and (6) the stiffness of the grout column. Limited tests were also conducted on cylindrical columns constructed in fabric bags. Recommendations for point support construction using sodium silicate technology and the need for additional research to develop improved containment devices for column construction are addressed in the report.

The Physiographical Features of the Region The Middleback; Range proper, from the Iron Duke in the south to the Iron Prince in the north, extends in a meridional direction for 21 miles, but may well be taken to embrace also the Iron Knob and Iron Monarch prominences so that the total length of the Range is 37 miles.Although no great altitudes are reached, the slopes of the high country are steep and the Range stands out prominently above the peneplaned surface of upper Eyre Peninsula. The Range is built up of sub-parallel ridges at some places, and its continuity is interrupted by transverse breaks or gaps resulting from normal stream erosion and corrosion during earlier periods when precipitation was heavier and streams were more active. Traces of high-level gravels remain on the flanks of Kimba Gap. A former mature stream on the western side of the Range has had its lower reaches blocked by sand and the old stream channel has been converted into an eiongated basin of internal drainage. The sand dunes in this area appear to be practically stationary at present, being fixed by mallee vegetation. Their trend is west-northwest.The relief of the Range is regarded as having been determined primarily by meridional strike faulting and selective silification of some of the beds. This paper describes new research and development currently being undertaken by the CSIRO Mining Technology Group to advance the automation capability of continuous mining equipment in underground coal mining operations. The effort aims at increasing the overall rate of roadway development as well as providing a safer working environment for underground mine personnel. The activity is funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) and forms part of a larger underground development initiative, known as the CM2010 project. The CM2010 is managed via a consortium of leading mining industry representatives through the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG). The Task Group has identified three research areas requiring new development in order to realise the CM2010 project objectives: self-guiding (autonomous) continuous miner capability, an enhanced drilling and bolting process and improved mesh deployment. CSIRO's primary role in the CM2010 project is in the development of the autonomous continuous miner guidance capability.This paper reports on outcomes achieved at the half-way mark of a three year research and development project. It details the technical developments undertaken towards demonstration of a 'self-steering' capability to enable a continuous miner to automatically maintain a given mining heading and mining horizon under production conditions. A primary technical requirement of this automated functionality is the means to accurately determine both the location and orientation of the continuous miner in real-time. Testing and validation of the guidance system solution has been implemented using a combination of an instrumentation-grade inertial navigation unit and radar technology. Comprehensive performance evaluations have been conducted using a scale skid-steer mobility platform known as the Phoenix. Results achieved to the present stage of the project are highly promising and suggest that an automated self-steering functionality is achievable under production conditions. This new outcome represents an important move towards implementing a step change improvement for future underground roadway development.

El presente texto describe algunos aspectos de la inversión extranjera en tres períodos: fines del siglo XIX, la primera mitad del siglo XX y segunda mitad del siglo XX. Dentro de lo quince casos analizados se halló que 5 empresas son iguales: Northern, Southem, Santander, Santa Luisa y Madrigal; 4 empresas se han "peruanizado" total o parcialmente: Caylloma, Ticapampa (Alianza), Lampa (Minsur) y Ruaron, 3 empresas se han agotado aparentemente: Santo Domingo, Salinas y Minas Ragra, 1 yacimiento revertió al Estado y fue desarrollado por Minero Perú: Cerro Verde; y 2 empresas fueron expropiadas y estatizadas: Cerro de Pasco Corporation y Marcona. En todos los casos no hubo descubrimiento del yacimiento por el inversionista, quien compró las concesiones y denuncios, con excepción de Marcona que estuvo explorado y desarrollado y fue contratado para su explotación.
