“Old Borate,” located in the Calico Mountains east of Barstow, California, lead domestic colemanite production from 1884 through 1907. Mineral exploration at “Old Borate” in the early 1980's, examined borate mineralization in Tertiary lacustrine strata. Surface sample and drill hole locations, geology and structure, were hand-drafted on paper maps. To re-evaluate this data, the information was digitized using Geographic Information Systems software. Digital Elevation Model based terrain modeling integrated surficial samples with drill hole data to locate favorable drilling targets. Structural relationships were used to identify hypothetical resources formed by the leaching of boron from surface exposures, redeposited at depth.

Confined explosions are a major risk in underground coal mine operations. Depending on confinement, ignition location and obstacles in the flame path, methane explosions can transition to detonations. This research focuses on explosion experiments in a reactor with diameter of 71 cm and length of 30.5 m, along with developing the corresponding computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model that captures the observed flame behavior. The results show that the 2D and 3D CFD models are able predict the experimental flame front propagation velocity, but the 3D model shows more explicit conformity than the 2D model.

Filtration is the operation of liquid solid separation commonly applied in the mining industry. The use of filtering chemical agents is a technical solution viable for filtering optimization. The present work proposed to evaluate two filtering chemical agents (surfactants) to reduce the final moisture content of iron ore concentrate from Ferrous Resources. The leaf test top feed was done with the FLOTICOR FA 7241 and FLOTICOR FA 16557 products. The foaming profile of the filtrate was also evaluated, once excessive foaming is undesired when using this kind of products. The results showed a reduction in the final moisture of the filter cake. The product FLOTICOR FA 16557 achieved the best results, reducing final cake moisture from 10.4% to 9.8% at the dosagem of 25 g/t, besides presenting a fast kinetics in the foam drainage, presenting itself as a technical alternative for filtration optimization.

The Olympias Mine in Northern Greece is producing an extremely refractory gold-bearing arsenical pyrite concentrate, containing on the average 41 3 S, 40 3 Fe, 10-12 3 As, 25 ppm Au and 35 ppm Ag. During the process selection stage, more than a dozen alternative technologies? were considered and an in-depth analysis was prepared for the three most promising, ie roasting, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation. Detailed capital and operating cost estimates were prepared, based, where appropriate, on laboratory and pilot-plant tests. A number of criteria was used for process evaluation and selection, including capital and operating costs; environmental impact, gold' recovery, stage of development, etc. Based on the above evaluation, the Sherritt Pressure Oxidation Process was finally selected. A detailed description of the process selection stage, supported with laboratory and pilot-plant test results on many of the processes considered, will be? presented.

The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

The fifteen alloys investigated were melted in sealed wear lubes, sroaged, homogenized, and then analyzed, using the conventional isotope-plating plus lathe- sectiorzing teclzniqlte. The data obtaiued show that the difJusion coeflcient of the zinc isotope increases titlz increase in zinc content, and decreases t'itlz incease in nickel content. It is now generally recognized that diffusion data and theories are needed for multicomponent systems, where extensive practical developments and even some theoretical studies have already been made. For example, much recent work on precipitation from solid solution has been concerned with ternary solid solutions such as A-M-Z' while Zener relaxation has been studied on Au-Ag-Zn alloys,' although adequate diffusion data are available for neither of these systems. Actually, the only ternary systems for which systematic diffusion studies have been begun, in addi- tion to the one reported here, are CO-i-cr3 and Cu-A-Au. Since the theory of multicomponent diffusion is still in the stage of active development5 it is important to distinguish the various kinds of diffusion data that can be determined. An oversimplified approach, widely used prior to 1950, was to determine the influence of a third element, such as nickel, on the diffusion behavior of a binary alloy, such as CU-Z. Later it was recognized7 that four diffusion coefficients can be used to describe ordinary interdiffusion in a ternary system, while as many as six coefficients may be required to include the Kirkendall effect. It is likely that the number of independent coefficients will be shown to be less than four and six, respectively, through the application of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.5 The simplest type of diffusion in a multicomponent system is tracer diffusion, since each component is characterized by its own tracer-diffusion coefficient in an alloy of a given composition. Thus, in a ternary alloy there are three tracer-diffusion coefficients, each a function of composition and temperature. The present research program is a study of tracer diffusion in the copper corner of the Cu-Ni-Zn system out to 30 at. pct each of Ni and Zn in a 150°C range of temperature just below the solidus temperature. "The Sigma gold deposit is in a band of deformed metavolcanic rocks that are cut by an irregular mass of porphyritic diorite and by narrow undeformed feldspar porphyry dykes. The gold is in veins consisting mainly of quartz and tourmaline with minor pyrite, carbonate, chlorite, scheelite and free gold. The results presented here concern the structural setting of the ore and are based on a study of the mode of emplacement.Two principal types of veins have been recognized: subvertical and oblique veins. Both types are contemporaneous, mechanically linked and postdate regional deformation. The sub-vertical veins are composed of numerous mineralized lenses that occupy the central part of ductile shear zones of great lateral and vertical extent. Normally, several lenses occur in the same shear zone. The vein material seems to have resulted from incremental filling of openings by repeated vertical movement along rupture planes developed in the central part of the shear zones.The oblique veins are small elliptical lenses of ribboned vein material which formed essentially by progressive vertical opening of oblique fractures. Two types of oblique veins are known: one is restricted to feldspar porphyry dykes, within which they are arranged in an en-echelon fashion; the other is of greater extent and is not restricted to one rock type, but tends, however, to occur in the more competent porphyritic diorite.Vein orientation and mode of formation suggest that both sub-vertical and oblique veins developed during progressive deformation associated with the formation of the ductile shear zones. The latter probably formed in response to a compression that took place late in the tectonic history of the host rocks at Sigma."

In recent times, with the global mining industry’s focus on sustainable development there has been a significant focus on mine closure and rehabilitation performance and reporting through the development of the International Council on Mining Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative and the Equator Principles. In addition, financial reporting obligations under International Financial Reporting Standards and the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) have also led to better understanding and improvements with industry closure performance, liability management and reporting.Under these sustainable development principles and financial reporting obligations, mining companies are required to consider mine closure planning and associated cost estimates across all life cycle phases of the mine. Internal processes have been developed within mining companies to better understand their closure liabilities and obligations and likely costs and cost estimating processes are generally developed for long-term life-of-mine (asset) planning and budgeting, financial reporting for corporate balance sheet provisioning purposes, and regulator reporting for environmental bonding and financial assurances.These days mining companies need to plan for, prepare and actually mine for closure right from the start of a project. This means that their closure and rehabilitation liabilities throughout each stage of the mine life cycle phases must be understood, planned for, managed and controlled.So how is the industry performing? Understanding of closure liabilities is improving and reflected in liability cost estimations that are recognising the likely issues to be faced at closure, but there is a way to go to ensure that the industry doesn’t add to the increasing legacy liabilities being passed onto the wider community.CITATION:Slight, M and Lacy, H, 2016. The use of consumable.-electrode arc melting as a production technology is growing. One advantageous feature of this process is that it avoids ingot contamination by soluble crucible materials by employing a chilled metal crucible. Because the thermal balance under these conditions is rather delicate and does not necessarily provide a favorable environment for solidification, catastrophic imbalances can occur. The effectiveness and mechanistic roles of various factors are mostly unknown, and more intelligent insight regarding the distribution of temperature and heat is needed. Experience has provided several pertinent observations, some of which are quite superficial. The most meaningful data have resulted from studies of molten pool shapes and sizes and from measurements of heat flow through crucible walls. Overall experience, intuitively interpreted and supplemented, is sufficient nevertheless as a basis for a boundary-value treatment of the problem. A mathematical analysis based on a separation of variables, using conventional differential equation methods, provides a useful solution. For a cylindrical ingot, the temperature varies as a Bessel function of an argument proportional to the radius and as an exponential function of longitudinal position. Trial calculations using the problem solution seem to verify the general correctness of the result as compared with experience. The role and nature of solution parameters are also clarified, though not entirely resolved. It is revealed that the barrier to heat flow at the ingot-crucible surface has a prominent influence. Utility of the model embodied in the problem solution is readily demonstrated by considering a variety of contemporary questions about arc melting, and it is hoped that utility can be enhanced by improvement of the model.

In a conventional cement plant, the drying and heating of the raw material takes place in the upper section of a cylindrical kiln where the heat exchange is poor. In a Lepol kiln this part of the process is carried out on a traveling grate where the heat exchange is efficient. The increase in fuel economy justifies the greater complexity of the installation.

THE axis of the middle portion of the Ural mountains is made up chiefly of highly compressed igneous and sedimentary schists, considered of Devonian age by the Russian geologists, with large areas of serpentine (peridotite originally) gabbro, etc., intrusive in the schist series. In addition there are large areas of probably older granitic and gneissic .rocks. The nickel deposits referred to in this paper are found in the Devonian schists and their associated igneous rocks. The gabbro-peridotite intrusions probably took place in late Devonian or early Permian time, inasmuch as the Permian and Carboniferous beds lie at gentle angles on the Devonian series on the west slope of the Urals. Perhaps the first attempt to work a nickel deposit in the Urals was made about 1866 in the Revdinsk district, which is situated southwest of Ekaterinburg. I was informed by a Russian that a wet method of extracting the nickel was tried but was not a commercial success. This deposit has been described by Müller,1 Foullon,2 and Karpinski.3 Beck4 gives an abstract of these papers.

The operating behavior of liquid-solid cyclones is outlined, together with the nature and range of the process results obtainable, to serve as a background for engineers wishing to consider application of this new process tool. BY now most engineers are familiar with the liquid-solid or Dutch State Mines cyclone. However, it should be helpful to know exactly what it is that the equipment does and what its limits are. Without going into cyclone theory, this paper will describe the operating characteristics of Dutch State Mines cyclones. These are manufactured under license in this country and sold under the trade-marked name of DorrClone. The physical construction of the liquid-solid cyclone has been covered in many papers,'-' the DorrClone in particular being described in some detail by Weems. Fig. 1 shows the unit in cross-section. The feed enters at C. The coarse, heavy particles are thrown centrifugally to the periphery and make their way down the wall to the apex where their rate of discharge as underflow is controlled by an adjustable rubber apex valve. As the apex diameter is decreased the solids build up behind the valve, producing a denser underflow. Meanwhile the fine particles are swept into the upward flowing vortex stream which exits as overflow through the vortex finder, F. Flexibility to produce the specific result desired in a particular process is achieved by providing means for varying the areas of the entrance, vortex discharge, and apex discharge. The entrance area may be varied by insertion of special shims. Vortex discharge area may be changed by use of different-sized vortex finders which are interchangeable. Similarly, the different sizes of apex valves are interchangeable and in addition each apex valve is variable down to about 60 pct of its maximum diameter. A most significant primary distinction to make is that although liquid-solid cyclones have been sometimes called thickeners, they actually are classifiers, and very potent ones. They are almost never thickeners in the special sense that many metallurgical engineers understand the term. There would be no profit in quibbling over the definition of a word, but when the application of cyclones is considered, it will help to understand the difference be- tween two mechanisms, one of which will be called classification, and the other thickening. In what is called thickening the fine solid particles present in the feed hold together by surface attraction during the sedimentation process. The loose network of particles thus held together constrains all particles to settle at approximately the same rate, the larger ones dragging the smaller ones down. As a result, pulp settles with a sharp line of demarcation between solids and a relatively clear supernatant liquid. Essentially all the solids, regardless of their fineness, pass into the thickened underflow, and a clear overflow is separated. In classification, on the other hand, the interparti-cle forces are relatively insignificant as compared to the settling force on the individual particles, and are insufficient to prevent independent movement of the particles. The coarsest, heaviest particles settle most rapidly through the pulp, passing more slowly settling fines. Particles coarser than the mesh-of-separation essentially all settle into the underflow, but if the feed contains any particles finer than the mesh of separation, at least part of them will appear in the overflow. A clear supernatant or overflow can be obtained only if there are no undersize particles present in the feed. Thus it will be seen that classification is impossible under ideal thickening conditions. The finer particles are pulled down at essentially the same rate as coarser particles, and there is no separation on the basis of particle size. The surface attraction holding the particles together in a thickener is usually feeble. Whenever the sedimentation force on any particle is strong with respect to the interparticle forces, that particle can pass through the tenuous structure and settle independently. There are at least four ways of making the sedimentation force strong, with respect to the interparticle forces, and obtaining classification. First, and most obvious, the particles may be large and heavy. Thus coarse sands settle out in a beaker or Dorr thickener ahead of the rest of the thickening solids. Second, the interparticle forces may be altered by physicochemical means; i.e., it is often necessary to add dispersing agents to destroy the interparticle forces and permit classification to take place. Third, the interparticle forces may be reduced by dilution of pulp. It is well known that to obtain the most efficient separation of

The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

This will progress further into the most likely changes in chemical and physical requirements of the ore products. No definite target can be set for 1990, but the logic from the direction of the changes will be established.IntroductionThe tonnage and quality of iron ore produced in the eighties will be heavily influenced by energy and investment considerations. That's not a great pronouncement, but this paper will explain how these two factors are :(I) influencing a disproportionate growth of electric furnace capacity and a greater use of scrap for iron units, in place of Iron ore;(2) influencing chemistry specifications; and(3) causing extensive examination of ore agglomerate form. Inflating investment costs are emphasizing the need for more productive blast furnaces, and the iron ore burden is under heavy examination as to how it affects productivity and coke rate."

A study was undertaken to remove the Se from waste solutions using a raw form of the biomass called Iota Chips derived from the seaweed, Eucheuma spinosum. Removal of Se from solutions was investigated as a function of time, pH, conc. of Se in solution (0.1 to 100 ppm) and lota Chips to liquid ratios of 10-2 to 10-5. For solutions containing initial conc. of 0.1 ppm Se, with the addition of Iota Chips at a solid to liquid ratio of 10-3, the Se conc. decreased to 0.03 ppm in about 3 hours. Iota Chips absorption capacity to the Se and its application to the treatment of the metallurgical processing effluents are discussed.

Fine coal is substantially more costly to process than coarse coal because of technical difficulties associated with separating fine particles and removing process water from both clean coal and refuse. Therefore, companies are often forced to discard coal fines to waste impoundments. According to a recent report published by National Research Council, the U.S. coal industry is discarding 70-90 million tons of coal fines annually to 713 active impoundments, most of which are located in Central Appalachia. On October 11, 2000, a 72-acre impoundment near Inez, Kentucky, accidentally released 250 million gallons of coal slurry into nearby underground mines, creeks, rivers, and schoolyards, thereby creating serious environ-mental concerns. Fortunately, recent advances in separation technologies make it possible to recover fine coal more efficiently from existing coal preparation plants and from waste streams previously discarded to impoundments. The availability of these new technologies allows companies to increase profitability and minimize environmental risks, which are conducive for achieving sustainable mining.

Introduction The problems of metallogenesis are largely related to those concerning the origin of igneous rocks, which, in turn, are involved with the question of crustal mechanics. Many ore-bodies are genetically related to associated intrusive and there is an equally close association apparent between igneous intrusion and crustal deformation. The problem of ore-deposition is concerned, therefore, with the fundamental problems of geology. For a long time speculations regarding crustal movements rested largely on the contraction theory and its associated conceptions. Vertical movements were considered to be all important and horizontal movements secondary to them. Magmas were pictured as rising more or less vertically in the crust and were believed to form in vertically disposed magma-chambers or reservoirs. The principle of magmatic differentiation seemed to offer the best explanation of the origin and association of diverse rock types and it seemed also to require the existence of quiescent magma-chambers for the admittedly slow process of differentiation. Accumulating evidence of the importance of horizontal movement in the crust, has, along with other considerations, discredited the contraction hypothesis and many of the inferences that go with it. The same evidence may require some change in the prevailing conception of the origin of the various types of igneous rock and of the mechanics of intrusion. Geologists are now at sea concerning some of the vital and fundamental problems of the crust, and the field is open for speculation. The writer is developing a hypothesis which seems to permit an explanation and? a correlation of earth structures and phenomena. If it rests on a firm foundation, the hypothesis, because it is fundamental, is certain to have a profound bearing on the problems of economic geology. It is for this reason that an outline of the hypothesis is offered at this time. Only a few of its economic bearings are foreseen at this time and these will be indicated.

This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.

"Abstract The lateral earth pressure of vertical circular shaft is investigated by using experimental tests and a theoretical analysis. The emphasis was quantifying on the magnitude and distribution of a lateral earth pressure measured by three-dimensional arching effect. A framework for determining the earth pressure distribution on the basis of both centrifuge model and full-scale field test results is introduced. Through these studies, it is found that the lateral earth pressure decreases within active displacement (dh/H: 0.2×10-2, dh: horizontal displacement, H: Height of vertical shaft) of wall at deep excavation and the arching effect is more significant for deep excavation than for shallow excavation. It is also found that the lateral earth pressure acting on a vertical circular shaft considering arching effect is 70% smaller than that calculated by Rankine theory, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of realistic earth pressure for vertical circular shaft subjected to arching pressure.INTRODUCTIONIn South Korea, an increasing need for underground excavation and the application of the vertical circular wall (i.e. vertical shaft) is becoming an important issue in engineering practice. Here the vertical circular wall is generally embedded in soft or hard rocks through weathered soil varying thicknesses ranging up to 15 m. Since 1980, a number of huge excavation projects such as underground space for constructing power stations, subways, high-speed railways, and many lifeline constructions have been performed in urban areas (Jeong and Seo, 2004). Although there have been considerable advancements in construction techniques involving vertical circular wall, it is still very important for tunnel engineers to control the lateral earth pressure. Additionally, Proper estimation of earth pressures is a key factor in design of vertical circular wall. Because of three dimensional arching effects, i.e. convex arching and/or inverted arching, the earth pressure acting on a circular type of wall is less than other types. Thus, the vertical circular wall is generally used."
