B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) By reference to the available literature, an account is given of the manufacture of metal ingots by the Messina copper workers. These workers are thought to have been Balemba tribesmen, of the Musina Clan, who came from across the lebombo Mountains. A description is given of their methods of mining, smelting, and casting, and of the vlrious types of ingots they produced.

RESEARCH, primarily, is finding out the truth. Research applied to engineering opens the door to new principles and processes, the application of. which benefits mankind in a material way. The engineer believes that investigation instituted with the primary view of making the results directly applicable to the industries is the highest type of research. Coal is essentially the basis of modern industrial civilization; therefore, any, considerable research pertaining to coal must link itself to the industry by, practical application of the results of the research. In other words, all investigational work connected in any way with coal leads to conclusions that permit a better understanding of the origin, nature of occurrence, composition, better and safer mining, more careful preparation, or greater efficiency in utilization of coal. Modern engineering research has been fostered essentially by universities and in the laboratories of institutions of learning. Coal problems that lend themselves to solution in the laboratories have been first attacked and are perhaps the farthest toward solution. For example, a great amount of research work has been carried out with the various phases of chemistry connected with coal. On the other hand, the equally important problems connected with methods of mining have received but little attention, primarily because their solution involves the continued use of a great and expensive laboratory, which is none other than the mine itself. As many of the problems already solved have had chemistry as their background, so many of the problems unsolved have physics as their background; there are also unsolved problems that deal in- coal economics. Even psychology must be called upon in future coal-mining research as a basis for solving those great problems that deal with human relationships. In general, considerable advance has been made in coal research dealing with chemistry, not so much progress has been made with problems having physics and engineering as a background, while there is a tremendous range of untouched problems that deal essentially with business and psychology.

MOST of the bituminous and semibituminous coals of this country Will coke, and all of them yield, on carbonizing, more or less marketable gas and byproducts. We need, however, a finer distinction as between various grades of coking coals and between coals of different degrees of byproduct and gas-making possibilities. There is required by the consumer or the coal producer a dependable test to show whether a certain coal or mixture of coals will make coke of good commercial value for blast, furnace, foundry, water-gas, or domestic use; whether any difficulties in operation may arise from properties inherent in the coal; and whether gas and byproducts may be expected of good quality and in profitable quantity. For determining coke quality, the most dependable test is in actual run in an oven, but for byproducts a coal may better and more accurately be tested in the laboratory or in a miniature oven or retort. As to what are the most desirable qualities in blast-furnace coke, the furnace men themselves are not in complete agreement. Soiree desire a hard, well-burned, "hot" coke, and others get better results from a "greener," less hardened product that burns somewhat more readily in the furnace. But certain qualities of cell structure and porosity are commonly agreed upon as desirable. Information as to what kind of coke a certain coal may be made to yield is valuable in advance, whatever may be the consumer's ideas as to the particular kind most suitable to his needs. The question arises, Can we predict coking quality with any degree of satisfaction from a small-scale test? It used to be said that coals could not be tested satisfactorily on a laboratory scale either for the coke they would yield or-the byproducts. On account of the mystery with which the coking quality of -coal has been shrouded and the large determining influences that many believe are exerted by mass, pressure, and the passage of carbonaceous volatile matter through the coking material, it has seemed difficult to reproduce in the laboratory the exact conditions of commercial practice. This paper presents an industrial verification test, adding a high pressure grinding roll and magnetic separation operation after the third-stage fine crushing operation to reduce the particle size of ball mill feed and improve the processing capacity of grinding operation. The optimal process parameters of high pressure grinding roll and magnetic separation were determined to be a 10 mm of roller surface spacing, a 10.5 Mpa of roller surface pressure, a 14 r/min of roller surface speed, a particle feed size to the magnetic separator of P100 3 mm, and a 3000 Oe of magnetic field intensity. Under the above optimized conditions, the iron grade of magnetic pre-enriched concentrate increased significantly from 28.27% to 36.30%, and the iron recovery was 87.59%. Meanwhile, the yield of coarse tailings was 36.16%, which significantly reduced the amount of ore entering the subsequent ball mill-magnetic separation operation. The ball mill Bond work index Wib of raw materials and the pre-enriched concentrate were 11.76 kW•h/t and 10.46 kW•h/t, respectively. The relative grindability of the pre-enriched concentrate was increased by 34%.

"Within the mining industry the term “due diligence” is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money.The term originates in the requirement of the board of directors of a corporation to “act honestly and in good faith and exercise the care, diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances” (OBCA, 1994). Furthermore, the law assumes that a corporation (or its board) will have exercised due diligence in the acquisition of an asset and, therefore, knowingly (in the absence of fraud or deceit) will have taken on the liabilities and obligations associated with the asset (Nelson, 1994). This is the familiar “Buyer Beware”.Directors are liable for their decisions except “if the director relies in good faith up on financial statements of the corporation represented by an officer of the corporation or in a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person.”(OBCA, 1994).Hence the importance of reports prepared by professionals. They provide confirmation that the directors have exercised due diligence in the performance of their duties. For this reason these reports are referred to as due diligence studies."

A technologic group such as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines, which conducts research on many of the complicated and frequently interrelated problems of extracting crude oil and natural gas from the ground, transporting them to market or to places for subsequent treatment, and manufacturing products, should report progress from time to time. Engineers and others who apply the results obtained by this division are closely associated with its personnel, because may of the problems are attached cooperatively with groups in industry. Some of this cooperation is formal, as exemplified by work now in progress under cooperative agreements with the States of Oklahoma, Kansas, and others, but much of it is informal, prompted by the desire to be mutually helpful in the public interest. Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

After the minim operation, most raw materials that occur in the earth's crust require some form of processing or refining before they can be converted into a final end product. In the mineral industry these remarks apply to materials such as iron ore, bauxite, limestone, copper ore and many others that are found in Australia in large quantities. Processing plants for these raw materials operate more efficiently, however, if the feed to them is consistent in both physical and chemical characteristics. Such uniformity rarely occurs in nature so that some form of homogenisation, or blending, is required ahead of the processing plant. Bending also assists the mining operation itself by reducing; the need for selective mining and, by combining high and low grade materials, a more uniformly graded, commercially acceptable product can be obtained, thereby increasing the commercial life of a mine or quarry. Bed blending is the most efficient of the processes available, and following its development in the United States in 1905, over 100 plants have been installed, or are under construction, all over the world. The original process, the Robins--Nessiter system, has been the subject of continued improvements and refinements, so that economical capacities are possible from less than 100 l.t.p.h. up to 10,000 l.t.p,h. and beyond.

In the United States the state mining laws enacted in the late 1800s were the first laws to recognize that an employer had a responsibility to provide the employee a place to work that met at least some minimum safety standards. The coal mining industry was also the first major industry in the United States to be regulated in 1952 by federal safety laws, although federal inspectors had the right-of-entry as early as 1941. Within recent years, however, the Congress has enacted a number of federal safety regulations for a variety of industries, such as the Aviation Act (1958), National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Act (1966), National Gas Pipeline Act (1968), and Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act (1968). The fatality and injury experiences of the mining industry in the United States, while at a significantly higher rate than for industry as a whole, showed a continuous improvement until the last decade or two-at which time the rate leveled off. Although fatality and injury rates in foreign countries have been generally lower than in the United States, further improvement in those countries also has been difficult to achieve in recent years. It appears, therefore, that some major change in mining laws, combined with a radical improvement in mining technology and a more effective labor-management safety program, will be needed if further reductions are to be achieved in fatality and injury rates. At the same time, there is a growing awareness by society that an employee's place of work, where he spends nearly half of his waking hours, should be made as safe as possible. As increased consideration is given to means for achieving greater safety in all industrial situations, it is becoming apparent that more is required than merely providing physical safeguards on tools and machines. Rigorous, strictly enforced safety standards are useful, but more important is the desire of labor and management to make certain that industrial accidents are prevented. The pressure to achieve increased productivity, and thus receive higher wages, can be a significant deterrent to safe working practices. The temptation can be great to "take a chance" or "cut a corner" in order to speed up production. Public concern over all types of industrial safety in the United States was reflected by the introduction of a number of general occupational health and safety bills in Congress for the first time in 1968. While no legislation resulted, the hearings revealed that, although there were differences in how standards should be set and who should administer them, there was agreement on the need for adequate laws. Since the mining industry has been subject to safety standards longer than other industries, it is not surprising that advanced safety concepts for mining are being explored by the industry and the enforcing agencies. The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specificetiona that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, end that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3/ issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered 1s a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

It is well known that the performance and carbon emissions associated with the modern gas turbine engine depend critically upon the properties of the nickel-based superalloys, particularly those used in single crystal form. However, the design of all alloys in current use has been essentially empirical, or at best heavily reliant upon regression/neural network analysis of experimental datasets. In this paper, alloy design approaches [1] are described which are able to identify new alloy composition spaces which are worthy of experimental study. It is shown that a large amount of design data can be generated, which can be interpreted in different ways. Of course, the success of the approach depends heavily upon the accuracy of the underlying sub-models. Estimates of the creep resistance, cost, castability, density and oxidation resistance are made. It is demonstrated that these methods allow quantitative trade-offs to be made between the properties of interest.

The Bureau of Mines investigated coal storage silos to determine how gassy coal must be for methane accumulations in a silo to become hazardous and where such accumulations are likely to occur. Methane concentrations were measured in the open space above the stored coal pile, in the pile, and in the reclaiming area. No methane layering was found in closed-top silos. Reclaiming areas were as gassy as the top part of the silos. Coal samples were collected from the conveyors entering the silos in order to assess the gassiness of the coal. No simple correlation was found between the gassiness of the coal stored and the measured methane concentrations. However, at mines where the average 24-hour gas emission from the conveyor belt samples was 14 ft3/ton or more, fans or open tops were used. It appears that a large fraction of the methane released during storage remains in the void space between the coal particles.

Push backs used in the production planning of open pit mines play an integral role in generating annual cash flow. Although several algorithms for push back designs have been proposed, none have studied the optimum number of push backs. In this paper, different algorithms have been implemented for the push back design of a cross section of a copper deposit and the results discussed. Moreover, the optimum number of push backs has been determined using analytical and multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods based on minimizing the risk associated with grade uncertainty, and minimizing stripping ratio, while maximizing net present value (NPV). According to the findings, the optimum number of push backs has been proposed to be between three and six, as lower quantities of push backs are more likely to achieve the calculated net present value, and have smoother stripping ratios for different pushbacks. This approach was examined in an operating mine and the optimum number of push backs determined to be four.

Five major environmental effects of rock blasting are ground vibrations, airblast, flyrock, dust and fumes. What makes them "environmental" as opposed to occupational health and safety issues is that their impacts are felt off the mine, quarry or construction site. For some impacts, safe zones are defined through experience, flyrock being a good example. Flyrock at a mine can be 1) rock thrown beyond the blast area or expected hazard zone, 2) rock thrown beyond the permit area, or 3) rock thrown more than 1/2 the distance to the nearest non-mine structure (OSM rule for surface coal mines). Rock throw of less than the "flyrock" range is then a safety issue.

Due to the increasing environmental and public concerns over cyanidation, there has been a large amount of research into viable alternative lixiviants. Despite these studies, there is little published data directly comparing the kinetics of gold leaching for each of these alternatives: most of the literature is concerned with gold extraction from ores. This paper presents a detailed kinetic study of gold leaching in cyanide, armmonia/thiosulfate and chloride/hypochlorite solutions. The gold leach rates were measured using a rotating electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (REQCM). This instrument allows the mass of a gold sample to measured in?situ, with a sensitivity of less than 10 ng. From the results of these studies, it is possible to select experimental conditions where the leach rates of the alternative lixiviants are similar to that for the traditional cyanide system.

Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.

In May, 1850, the first gold from the Comstock lode was discovered in the sands near the Carson river. It had been washed down by natural agencies, through Gold Caflon, from the decomposed rock of the ledge above. Within a few weeks, the precious metal was traced more than three miles in shallow deposits along the bed of the canon, from the river to the Devil's Gate-—a narrow, rocky cleft, notable to the teamsters of a later day chiefly as the place where " Uncle Jimmy Fair" collected high tolls, and could not reduce the rates, because " this was all he had for the education of his poor children." From 1850 to 1857, a fluctuating band of miners, whose number varied from twenty to two hundred, washed the Gold Canon placers with rockers and long-toms, making four to five dollars a day each until the last-named year, when the deposits were in great measure exhausted. The chief settlement of these miners was at Johntown. During only a third of the year was the water-supply sufficient for their work. The remainder of the time they utilized in desultory prospecting of the hills and in occasional forays for supplies among the Mormons in Carson valley. In 1857, the Grosch brothers discovered the Comstock lode at some point, now unknown, in Gold Hill, but their discovery perished with them. Early in 1858, the " Pioneer Quartz Company," having located several of the small surface-veins around Silver City (whose connection with the main lode has never been definitely shown), built an arrastra, and worked some of their ore; but the returns were so small that they soon abandoned this business. WILSON and the authors)] Ground Movement Adjacent to a Caving Block in the Climax Molybdenum Mine STEPHEN ROYCE•-It is interesting to note from B, Fig 2, how closely the subsidence limits approximate to the 60° angle of draw, which is so commonly found to rule in large scale rock subsidence. The tension cracks shown at B are commonly found in the initial stages of subsidence movement and spread like a halo about subsidence limits as movement extends. These tension cracks usually grow into escarpments later on. Apparently from the illustrations and description given, a system of vertical fractures is the predominating weakness in the wall rock at Climax, and therefore both tension cracks and escarpments are prevailingly vertical in attitude. The illustrations in Mr. Vanderwilt's article seem to conform to the general rule that yield by subsidence is heralded by tension cracks which foreshadow the appearance of the subsidence scarps which are both described in the paper and shown in Fig 2. The difference between the B side and the A side of Fig 2 is apparently caused mainly by the vertical fracturing which controls subsidence at Climax as compared to the relatively homogeneous rock formation at A upon which the original figure in Peele's Handbook was based. The draw at B is exactly 60°, while the draw at A is a little flatter. The influence of the vertical fractures explains the difference. The surprising feature is the relatively small deviation from the general 60° draw line, which is about the average of rock subsidence experience. The influence of local fracture systems, faults and bedding in controlling subsidence all the way from extremely low angles of draw to vertical is rather fully discussed in the Peele's Handbook article referred to. The more illustrations of subsidence there are published the better will be our knowledge. The general principles are pretty well established. The wide local differences reflect the effect of local conditions. This paper is a very valuable contribution to the subject, and for the benefit of the mining industry, it is to be hoped that there will be many more such clear and concise presentations. Particularly block caving is apt to be of greatly increasing importance in the future of a mining industry that must meet high labor costs. More examples of block caving from small scale to large scale operations like those at Climax will serve a vital need. JOHN W. ONE particular plant has been chosen to illustrate the various factors in mill design. The problems are general in nature and with various modifications are met in the design of most milling plants. Literature on modern mill design is not extensive and certainly has not kept pace with the rapid advancement in the art of ore beneficiation. Much remains to be investigated, and continued vigilance is required to give the operator and the metallurgist the best layout to meet the industry's changing requirements. The Humboldt project, a joint venture of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. and the Ford Motor Co., involves an iron ore flotation plant near the town of Humboldt, on the Marquette range of the Michigan Upper Peninsula. A crushing plant, designed for an ultimate capacity of 720 long tons per hr, is followed by a first mill unit of 70 long tons per hr. Future mill units are planned to bring the total mill capacity to 5000 long tons per 24 hr.

The century we live in has been an eventful time for the Third World, particularly the country of Peru. Although it will take one or two generations more to see its end and fully evaluate its scope, it is already clear that during the twentieth century, Peru has entered a dynamic industrial, economic, social, and political revolution. This century has seen the end of old governments, and the introduction of reforms which radically change complex traditional patterns. It also has marked the beginning of an era in which the government has elected to undertake, as a national effort, most of the future economic growth of Peru. For the most part, large multinational mining companies, which have helped to discover and put into operation large mineral and ore deposits in Peru, have been sympathetic toward this philosophy. Most big foreign companies, in addition to capital, brought with them to Peru an efficient technology, modern management, and an effective organization for the further processing, sales, and distribution of refined commodities. Nationalization of all basic resources, including mining, is the, trend-not, it is hoped, to the detriment of established technology and production.

Las unidades sedimentarias mesozoicas que afloran en las subcuencas Apurímac, Vilcabamba y Santo Tomás se encuentran asociadas a una clasificación hidrogeológica (acuíferos o acuitardos fisurados sedimentarios). La caracterización litogeoquímica de estas unidades sedimentarias se basó en los 15 elementos (As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, Zn, Be, Cd, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, Ti) que utilizan los estudios de línea base geoambiental del Ingenmet. Los resultados han sido comparados con los valores de la UCC (Wedepohl, 1995), lo cual ha permitido caracterizar el comportamiento químico de las unidades hidrogeológicas asociadas a las unidades sedimentarias. Se determinó que son tres los factores que controlan el comportamiento químico de las unidades hidrogeológicas: tiempo geológico, espacio y litología. Estos factores son importantes para la integración de información con los análisis de sedimentos y aguas de los estudios de línea base geoambiental, porque permitirán comprender el origen de posibles zonas anómalas de los elementos descritos en los sedimentos y aguas.
