THE shaft of the Raven. mine, at Butte, Mont., is an incline 1,700 ft. in length and dipping at various angles. At the top the dip is 70° from the horizontal, but this is gradually flattened until at the 300-ft. level the inclination is only 47°. This angle continues to the 1,100-ft. level, below which it, curves with a 125-ft. radius to 78°. In addition to these variations in dip, the shaft does not lie in the same vertical plane, with the result that the hoisting rope not only rubs at intervals on both the hanging- and foot-walls, but presses strongly against the west, dividers near the collar, while 300 ft. below it runs close to the east end plates. The early operators used no idlers, and wall plates cut 6 in. deep y the rope resulted. Later operators first attempted to overcome the excessive friction, and the wear of rope and wall plates, by introducing solid cast-iron idlers, 3 in. in diameter. To allow for the travel of the rope from side to side some of these had to be 3 ft. long and were very heavy. Judging from the appearance of the old idlers of this type found at the mine, they often failed to turn in the bearings, which is not surprising when it is considered that they would have to make 1,000 rev.. a minute under ordinary hoisting conditions. The next rolls were made of wood, 6 in. in diameter, with an iron band about each end, and a pintle of 1-in. round steel driven in at the ends to serve as a shaft. These wore rapidly, and were soon replaced by rolls made from water pipe, 5 or 6 in. in diameter, cut to the desired length and fitted with a wooden cylinder into which the pintle was driven. Where the idlers were used on the hanging-wall of the shaft the original bearing was simply a piece of 2 by 1-1 in. strap iron, 10 in. long, turned up at the end in a circle of 18 in. in diameter to receive the shaft. A small hole served for oiling, and common black oil was generally used, although filtered oil from engine bearings and compressor bearings was also used. When the rolls were to be placed on the foot-wall the bearings were made from two pieces of 1 by 3 in. steel, 6 in. long. A half circle was cut on the flat side of each piece and the two half circles together formed a bearing. Oil holes were provided, and in some cases holes were bored through the two pieces so that they could be screwed or spiked to the wall plates.

FLOTATION tests, from which the flowsheet for the concentrator was determined, were made in a pilot mill at Chuquicamata and later comparative testing of full size flotation cells was done at the Andes Copper Mining Co. concentrator in Potrerillos. The principal sulphide copper mineral is chalcocite with varying amounts of covellite, enargite, and chalcopyrite. The oxidized portion is principally antlerite, a green basic copper sulphate. The gangue minerals include quartz, sericite, pyrite, feldspars and kaolin. Chuquicamata pit ores have proved to be hard grinding. The results of the flotation and metallurgical work prove that good extraction and concentrate grade can be obtained under a rather wide range of conditions. Metallurgy In general the metallurgy of the ore requires a fairly close control of the grind to the primary rougher flotation and of the regrind of the primary rougher concentrate before cleaning. Regrinding is necessary to reduce the insoluble content of the final concentrate since a large part of the middling combinations are between the copper and silica minerals. The alkalinity of the pulps can vary between wide limits and control of the percent solids gives the desired grind. Alkalinity Control Arroyo Salado water is supplied to the concentrator head tanks. It contains about 5000 ppm of salts but test work shows no deleterious effect. Actually this water permits a decrease of as much as 1 lb of lime per ton of ore as compared to San Pedro water, which is used for leaching oxide ore. About one quarter of the water flow through the concentrator will be new water from the reservoir. The remainder will be reclaimed from the thickeners. For primary grinding and rougher flotation, new and reclaimed water are combined in the head tanks. To avoid erratic results, only new water is used in the regrind system. Milk of lime is added to the rod mill feed chute to obtain the maximum benefit of mixing with the ore. This protects the equipment from corrosion due to entrained acids and soluble copper salts. Lime consumption is 3 to 5 lb per ton of ore. Grinding and Flotation The six bin gates over each belt feeder are opened in controlled combination and sequence to keep a live bed of ore in the bin to prevent arching and to obtain mixing. The milk of lime added ahead of the rod mill is regulated to suit rougher flotation requirements. The primary promoter reagent, Aerofloat 238, is added to the 10-mesh discharge of the rod mill as it is laundered to the ball mill scoop box. The classifier overflow is regulated to produce a grind of about 12 to 15 pct +65 mesh and 60 pct -200 mesh. But at that particular time both its immediate and long-range prospects were giving the company serious concern. The financial panic that began late in 1929 was growing worse instead of better. Neither raw materials nor finished products could find a market. In 1932 the price of copper fell to the almost unprecedented figure of four and eight tenths cents a pound. Domestic production of copper in the United States was further threatened by a large low-cost output from the mines of Africa and the Andes. Canadian copper mines, with their large yield of other valuable metals from the same ores, added to the difficulties of the American companies. "The Superior Province of the Canadian Shield is the largest gold producing area within Archean greenstone rocks in the world, with total production of over 140 million ounces of gold. One hundred and fifty-five mines have individually produced more than 8,000 ounces, although only a relatively limited number of deposits (33) produced more than one million ounces of gold. The output from these 33 deposits accounts, however, for 85% of total gold production. The majority of grades (68%) ranges between 0.10 and 0.30 ounce per ton, and there is no linear relationship between grade and tonnage.Development of new gold mines reflects the history of gold prices. However, the response to the latest increase in gold prices was not as marked. It is concluded that gold deposits are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and new exploration techniques are urgently required.IntroductionWith most of its production coming out of the Superior Province, the Canadian Shield is the largest producer of gold from Archean greenstone rock s in the world. In total gold production, the Superior Province is surpassed only by the paleo-placers of Witwatersrand and the placers of the USSR (Anhaeusser, 1976). There has been no attempt so far to compile the historical production of the Province as a whole in a single document. The aim of this work is to fill this gap, not only for the convenience of having a complete list of gold producers, but, more importantly, as a basis on which to study the tonnage and grade characteristics of these deposits."

High carbon ferrochrome production process is energy intensive, consumes approximately 3300-3400 kWh per ton of metal produced. This amounts to ~ 34% of the total ferrochrome production cost. The power costs in India are almost 4 times greater than the leading ferrochrome producing countries like South Africa. Hence there is a need to look for alternative sources of energy. In ferrochrome making process large volumes of high concentration CO gas (~ 85%V) is developed at ~400-5000C, which if combusted within furnace represents high potential for significant electrical energy savings. In a typical heat in the state-of-the-art submerged arc furnace, about 34 kmol of CO gas is generated per ton of ferrochrome metal, which, if post combusted to CO2, represents 7620 MJ of energy. Post combustion of the evolving CO (and H2) gas to CO2 can be achieved by providing additional oxygen before the generated CO gas leaves the furnace. In this paper, a concept of post combustion in submerged arc furnace as potential source of significant electrical energy saving in ferro-chrome making process has been explored. The prospects and limitations of the same are discussed. The value of this paper lies in its attempt to explore the post combustion application to submerged arc furnace with an objective of significant reduction in electrical energy consumption in ferrochrome production process.

Materials produced in quarries have been used for different intentions such as concrete and cement raw material, asphalt and embankment aggregates, railway ballast. Especially in cement manufacturing, the chemical composition and the uniformity of the raw materials play a strategic role in the economy and quality of the cement process. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve uniformity and desired chemical composition and maintain these at all production stages according to the type of cement produced. To achieve this goal the production planning and pit design play an essential role. This paper briefly outlines the production optimization of cement raw materials in a quarry in Istanbul western part of Turkey. For the purpose it was used the 3D ore body modeling and the geostatistical techniques. The variation of chemical components (%CaO, %Al2O3, %Fe2O3 etc.) and quality control parametres (LSF, SR, AR and etc.) obtained from the quarry were determined. Then the values of unknown chemical components and quality control parameters in the ore body were estimated using Kriging which is one of the geostatistical interpolation methods. The open pit design was also created by specifying wall slopes and taking into consideration of the grade distributions of the benches. The most important revolution in the paper is investigating the effects of the block dimensions in block modelling which is important for reserve estimation. The other important point in the study is using the different range values in variogram analysis for determination optimal reserve estimation. n this study, the effects of two parametres on reserve and waste amount estimation were determined according to CaO% distribution. The study was pointed out that the changing of the two parameters are very important for the optimal mine planning and environmental considerations.

ABSTRACT: As part of an overall study of properties and processes influencing consolidation of oil sands fine tailings resulting from different extraction processes, self-weight consolidation tests were per-formed. Fourteen 2 m and 1 m high standpipe tests were instrumented to monitor the rate and magnitude of consolidation of seven fine tailings materials. Tests provided valuable information about the variation of consolidation related to differences in fine tailings material properties that result from a change in bitu-men extraction process (caustic versus non-caustic). In addition, the effect of adding a coagulant to caustic fine tailings was measured. Test results are presented and discussed in terms of consolidation rate long-term volume decrease, compressibility, and downward drainage. Non-caustic fine tailings had fasterinitial consolidation, which is important in tailings ponds for reducing storage capacity and returning decant water at a faster rate to the extraction plant. Similar results were obtained for caustic fine tailings with a coagulant addition. However, long-term settlement of the different fine tailings appears to con-verge to a similar value over time because it is then governed by effective stress.

As a result of the new mining law implemented in August 1985 and the programs conducted by the Institute Ecustoriano de Mineria (INEMIN), which was created by this legislation, there was considerably greater activity in the nonfuels mineral sector during 1986. Over the next 2 years, INEMIN will be developing a national mining plan that will guide Ecuadorean mineral development for the balance of this century. As stage one of INEMIN's mineral study, historical records were reviewed and 300 abandoned mines and 1,200 unexplored mineral deposits were available for further investigation. In 1986, INEMIN established 5 branch offices and negotiated 250 new mining contracts with foreign companies valued at $16 million. Despite all this activity, INEMIN officials estimate that 100,000 square kilometers remain available for claim staking. Technical assistance contracts were signed with Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, to assist in a variety of assignments ranging from helping prepare the national minion plan to the development of industrial mineral deposits.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DlnSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has potential application for measuring mine subsidence on a regional scale with high spatial and temporal resolutions. However, the characteristics of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and the effectiveness of DlnSAR for subsidence monitoring depend on the radar band (wavelength). This study evaluates the effectiveness of DinSAR for monitoring subsidence due to longwall mining in central Utah using L-band (24 cm wavelength) SAR data from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) and X-band (3 cm wavelength) SAR data from the TerraSAR-X mission.In the Wasatch Plateau region of central Utah, which is characterized by steep terrain and variable ground cover conditions, areas affected by longwall mine subsidence are identifiable using both L-band and X-band DlnSAR. Generally, using L-band data, subsidence magnitudes are measurable. Compared to X-band, L-band data are less affected by signal saturation due to large deformation gradients and by temporal decorrelation due to changes in the surface conditions over time. The L-band data tend to be stable over relatively long periods (months). Short wavelength X-band data are strongly affected by signal saturation and temporal decorrelation, but regions of subsidence are typically identifiable over short periods (days). Additionally, though subsidence magnitudes are difficult to precisely measure in the central Utah region using X-band data, they can often be reasonably estimated.INTRODUCTIONDifferential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DlnSAR) is a satellite-based remote technique that can be used to measure surface displacement over large regions with high spatial resolution. Under good conditions, displacements can be measured with centimeter to subcentimeter accuracy (Buckley, 2000; Massonnet and Feig!, 1998). DlnSAR also has high temporal resolution, and imaging periods typically range from 10 to 50 days (Rosenqvist, Shimada, and Watanabe, 2004; Roth, 2004). In the last two decades, the application of DlnSAR for mine subsidence monitoring has been demonstrated in coal basins in Europe, Australia, China, and the United States (Camec and Delacourt, 2000; Ge, Chang, and Rizos, 2007; Ge et al., 2008; Ismaya and Donovan, 2012; Ng et al., 2010; Perski, 2000; Perski and Jura, 2003; Popiolek and Krawczyk, 2006; Wegmuller et al., 2005; Wright and Stow, 1999; Zhao et al., 2014; Xinglin et al., 2014). Overall, these studies have demonstrated good data resolution, strong relationships between mine development and subsidence, and reasonable agreement between displacements measured by DinSAR and displacements measured by conventional surveys."

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. "Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments. A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including respectable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects. Reflecting the observation of a wide range of views regarding the subject of inflation, this paper will-address the impact of five different approaches to inflation on the evaluation of a single Canadian mining project."

Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. Reducing the contribution of heavy- and light-duty diesel-powered equipment to concentrations of aerosols and gases is essential to industry’s efforts to improve air quality in underground mining operations. The results of this study demonstrated a potential of control strategies based on retrofitting existing power packages with diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and repowering existing systems with advanced power packages to reduce contributions of diesel-powered vehicles to concentrations of diesel aerosols and criteria gases in underground mines. The implementation of viable exhaust aftertreatment systems and advanced diesel power packages could be instrumental in the underground mining industry securing a clean, economical and dependable source of power for mobile equipment.

Confinement is an important aspect of blasting. Reducing and increasing confinement can determine whether a blast design performs properly. Over-confined shots usually have poor fragmentation, higher vibrations, and stemming ejection, and unconfined shots usually have a lot of air blast and fly rock. When talking about confinement in blasting, static confinement conditions are typically referenced. Static confinement conditions are ruled by free faces, shot muck, burden, spacing, stemming, hole depth, toe, etc. All these conditions exist in a static state. Static confinement conditions are generally analyzed before the shot takes place, but once the shot starts, the conditions will change according to the sequence and delay of the shot. Once the shot starts, Dynamic confinement takes place. For the authors, Dynamic confinement is the confinement conditions that exist for the charge when it fires and should account not only for the variables included for the static confinement but also for the time and sequence of the shot. The paper explores the theory of dynamic confinement and its role in influencing blast performance. Time and sequence are the main influencers of dynamic confinement and will be the focus of the paper. How to generate the appropriate timing based on blast design, dynamic confinement, static confinement, and geology will also be discussed.

MECHANIZATION of coal mine, is radically changing the requirements for under-ground transportation. It has increased materially the need for reliability and belt conveyors are the most dependable means of moving coal away from the place where it is mined. Their record of freedom from delays is almost 100 per cent. Why then are- not belt conveyors in more general use. Part of the answer lies in the pour records made at some of the earlier installations, and in the fact that belts have so long been identified as a type of equipment suitable, in the main, only to thin seams. Another reason is lack of knowledge of the full potentialities of belt transportation.

GWILLIAM H. CLAMER (Philadelphia, Pa.).-About 16,000 tons of tin is used annually in the production of white metals. The real reason for using the so-called genuine babbitt, which is a high-tin base babbitt, perhaps in the majority of cases, is that tin has always been. a high-priced metal and people naturally believe that what they pay a high price for must be good. Mr. Jones has shown that the common metal, lead, is a superior base for most purposes for Which babbitt metal is used. The addition of lead is often looked upon as adulterant to genuine babbitt, and specifications for this reason rigidly restrict the lead content. A sub-committee of the Society for Testing Materials, at the meeting in June, presented tentative specifications on babbitt metal, in which were included twelve formulas, containing from zero to: 20, per cent. of tin, and several containing from 65 and 92 per cent.
