Environmental activists have targeted the mining industry in an attempt to prevent development, which has resulted in the industry's becoming defensive and retro-active. This paper argues that mining managements should go on the offensive and champion the environment through leadership in environmental policy and research and development, rather than reacting to anti-mining campaigns. In the formulation of an environmental policy for the mining industry, a clear understanding of the concept of sustainable development is of paramount importance.

Safety and continuation of operation necessitates ultrasonic preventive maintenance inspection on a regular basis.Ultrasonic inspection of hoist shafting, brake linkage and draw bars will contribute to a safe operation and can prevent costly unscheduled shut-down time. With little dismantling, ultrasonic testing techniques can be applied to. determine the conditions of shafting and linkage in hoisting equipment, mining equipment and other miscellaneous mining equipment."

Ammoniacal solutions are attractive and effective lixiviants for the dissolution of chalcopyrite, allowing for the formation of stable ammine complexes with copper while rejecting iron. Chalcopyrite dissolution in ammoniacal solutions is reviewed from literature, and results from a recently completed study evaluating it through electrochemical and controlled leach studies are discussed. Ammoniacal leaching of copper ores dates back to 1916 in the leaching of low grade copper ores in the Kennecott leaching plant and in the Calumet and Hecla mines, followed by the commercialisation of the Sherrit Gordon process for the ammoniacal leaching of sulphide copper ores in 1948. Since then ammoniacal leaching has received intermittent focus from researchers with the development of the Anaconda’s Arbiter process and the unsuccessful Escondida process. In these leaching processes, the formation of surface deposits has historically been reported to result in the passivation of the chalcopyrite surfaces, whereas oxygen mass transfer in solutions has been the focus of process design improvements. Results of studies on high grade chalcopyrite material is presented in this paper which show that although a surface deposit was formed, it did not result in the passivation of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions, and that while oxygen transfer is critical, it is not the direct oxidant in the reaction. INTRODUCTION Ammonia and its salts have been used in the hydrometallurgical treatment of non-ferrous metals such as copper, cobalt and nickel from oxide ores. Its chemistry allows for the selective dissolution of desired metals, leaving behind gangue including iron. Chalcopyrite is a copper sulphide ore known to be very stable and hence recalcitrant to many hydrometallurgical processing methods. Thus, the dissolution of chalcopyrite continues to be an attractive area of research. The dissolution of chalcopyrite in ammoniacal solutions is possible due to the stabilisation of copper(I) and copper (II) ions by ammonia in alkaline media. Ammonia has become more attractive as a lixiviant during the present socio-economic climate due to its low toxicity, relatively low cost and ease of regeneration by evaporation (Meng & Han, 1996). Ammonia processes are ideal when the gangue minerals are acid consuming e.g. with calcareous or dolomitic gangue (Paynter, 1973).

WHEN mixed with common cast steel in quantities ranging from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. and properly treated, manganese increases the ductility of the metal and adds greatly to its toughness and resistance to abrasive action, which properties comprise the distinctive characteristics that make manganese steel so valuable for many purposes at the present time. Manganese steel has been manufactured for about 26 years. .It was first made in a small way in England and subsequently produced in the United States in 1892. At present the manganese-steel foundries of this country have an annual capacity of about 60,000 tons and most of the growth has occurred within the past 10 years. In the early days of the industry it was impracticable to make manganese castings weighing over a few thousand pounds, but at present crusher heads, rolling-mill pinions, and similar castings weighing up to 30,000 lb. each are produced, and it does not appear that the limit of weight has been reached by a considerable margin. Manganese steel is similar in analysis to ordinary first-class converter metal except that it is high in carbon and contains from 11 to 13 ½ per cent. of manganese. From one standpoint manganese steel is similar to malleable iron in that the casting as it comes out of the sand is hard and brittle and must be made ductile by a heat-treating process. The heat treatment is an essential part of the process of making manganese-steel castings and must be properly carried out to secure satisfactory results. The necessity for heat treatment limits the thickness of sections which may be made of manganese steel. Originally the annealing depth was comparatively small, but researches carried on during the past few years have resulted in an increase in the thickness of section up to 5 ½ in., which it is possible to treat successfully. Large castings are cored out to a minimum thickness of 5 ½ in., thus not only eliminating some of the internal stresses which are invariably set up in a very thick casting, but also reducing the weight and inertia of the piece, an

In our comparison of California and Turkish colemanites, we should first place the discussion in context. In order to exclude technical considerations, which are not germane to this paper, we must make the manifest and basic observation that if colemanite were not acceptable for the production of glass products it would not be used, and we would not be interested in this comparison at all. Suffice it to say that the colemanites, being calcium borates, provide a necessary flux in glass manu¬facture, together with the requisite degree of physical strength and chemical durability which can be achieved only by the use in glass of a. flux substanti¬ally free from alkali; so the sodium borates are automatically excluded from the production of textile fibers. Thus we have today under consideration only California colemanite, Turkish cole mite, and, because it provides a degree of competition to both, ABA, or anhy¬drous boric acid, which, although it is a refined intermediate and of much higher cost, it is also of a much higher degree of purity, and its characteristics can easily be modified to produce a desired end product, so we must include it in any consideration of high quality borates. [Calcim Borate Pentahydrate] Colemanite is a [calcium pentahydrate,] with the formula Ca2B6011.5H20. It has a theoretical B203 content of 50.8%.

The high temperature physical properties of graphite are reviewed and interpreted in the light of present day knowledge of the mechanisms affecting these properties. The thermal and mechanical behaviors only are discussed and, whenever possible, comparisons are made with other refractory materials. Possible further studies are indicated, including some carbide work. AS long as the term high temperature implied only temperatures up to about 1000°C, the materials problems which arose could usually be handled by fairly conventional metal alloy types, such as the Co-Cr-Ni superalloys, for which there exists a great deal of technology. Perhaps this temperature can still be considered an upper limit for normal applications, but it is certainly true that the number of abnormal applications is increasing rapidly. The advent, in recent years, of ram-jet and rocket missiles and of high power nuclear reactor heat sources has raised a host of questions concerning the basic problem of what material to use in the temperature range up to 2000°C and higher. While there are, of course, many metals, in the second and third transition series, which melt at considerably higher temperatures than this, these metals are, at present, pretty well excluded from practical use by other considerations, such as re-crystallization, chemical activity, or excessive plastic deformation. The behavior of metals, from the standpoint of dislocation theory, is just beginning to be understood and thus there is some hope for the future development of very high temperature metals, but the immediate problems would most logically appear to have solutions involving the nonmetals, such as the refractory ceramics and graphite. For this reason, there is presently a great deal of engineering and experimental research being performed on the latter materials, much of this research being exploratory in the sense of gathering new property data. The situation, so far as graphite is concerned, is somewhat more fortunate than with the other refractory solids in the sense that a great deal is already known about its basic properties. This stems both from the fact that the carbon-carbon bond has been of interest to chemists for a long time (and graphite can be considered as a very large aromatic molecule, if desired) and the fact that its properties, both as a function of temperature and of radiation damage, are of critical importance to nuclear reactor designers. It is still true, of course, that such fundamental questions as why graphite remains solid to such a high temperature and why it has such a high thermal conductivity cannot entirely be answered at the present time. It is, nonetheless, meaningful and instructive to consider such problems in the light of existing knowledge. This is what the present paper will attempt to do. Before going on, it may be appropriate to classify graphite and justify its discussion before readers primarily interested in metals. Graphite is comparatively unique among materials in that there is always a property or group of properties which precludes calling it either a metal, a semiconductor, or a ceramic. It has the high electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal, but the artificial, poly-crystalline types show a negative thermal coefficient of electrical resistivity, generally characteristic of semiconductors. On the other hand, semiconductors, by definition, show an ever increasing resistivity as the temperature is lowered, whereas graphite approaches a finite, and, indeed, a rather low resistivity in the region of 10°K and, furthermore, a good single crystal of graphite has a positive temperature coefficient, as for a metal.' On still another hand, its porosity and brittleness at lower temperatures would put graphite in the ceramic class although, unlike most ceramics, it is readily machinable and has a high resistance to thermal shock. All things considered, it is probably more nearly appropriate to call graphite a metal than anything else. Although certainly outstanding in some ways, graphite has its peculiarities and, especially if the reader is unfamiliar with the data, it is probably valuable to review some representative property variations at high temperature. This review is meant to be mainly illustrative and no attempt has been made to be exhaustive. Review of High Temperature Properties At ordinary pressures, graphite does not melt, but sublimes directly into the gaseous phase at about 3700°C. Although the phase equilibrium diagram is still in some doubt, graphite will melt, at a slightly higher temperature, at pressures in excess of about 100 atm. The chief difficulty of using graphite in an oxidizing atmosphere is that the reaction rate becomes quite high at fairly low temperatures. If a threshold oxidation temperature2 is defined as the temperature at which graphite loses 1 pet of its weight in 24 hr, the value in air is 450°, the value in steam is 700°, and the value in carbon dioxide is 900°C. Efforts are presently being made to raise this threshold temperature either by impregnation with a retardant of some type (sodium tung-state and phosphoric acid, for example) or by a suitable metal or oxide coating. It is probably fair to say that, to date, these attempts have not shown any outstanding success in all respects. In December's marketing of 99.5 percent aluminum ingot, domestic producer pricing remained at 53$ per pound, while dealer quoting rose from 47.5¢ to 48.5¢. BORON Domestic production of boron minerals and chemicals reached an all-time high in 1977--1.4 million short tons valued at $236 million. Combined sales of the three California producers topped the 1976 level by 15 percent in quantity and 28 percent in value, a consequence of healthy demand in the glass and insulation industries. Unprecedented demand for boric acid as a flame retardant for cellulosic insulation stimulated producers to utilize fully all available capacity, thereby achieving a record output of 158,000 tons. One company increased output from its existing boric acid facilities and initiated production at another plant that historically had produced only sodium borates. A second company achieved a previously planned 25 percent plant expansion.

Electrowinning molybdenum from oxide feed materials dissolved in a variety of molten baths was investigated . A NaCl - NaF - Na₂ B₁ O -Mo0, system operating at 1,000 ° C in a cell without a protective atmosphere gave the best current efficiency , metal - to - cathode adherence , and purity of electrowon Technical - grade molybdic oxide , containing associated impurities of aluminum , iron , copper , silicon , and tungsten in combined quantities of 10 percent , was used as feed material to produce dendritic crystals of molybdenum metal containing less than 0.5 percent total base metal , carbon , and oxygen impurities . Arc - melting molybdenum electrowon from either chemically pure or commercial - grade Mo0, produced ingots that contained less than 0.1 percent total impurities and had hardness readings of 168 to 200 Vhn .

Ground freezing occupies a unique and important niche in underground construction, fulfilling a geotechnical need that is difficult, or sometimes impossible, to fulfill through other groundwater control and excavation support methods. Where complete groundwater cut-off and in-built ground support are required, and deep excavation is planned or the work occurs in difficult or disturbed ground, ground freezing offers the assurance critical to safe and timely construction. Compared with other groundwater cut-off or excavation support methods, a frozen wall is easily connected to underlying bedrock and will also adhere to adjoining subsurface installations or obstructions, if necessary, to provide a composite cutoff structure. Ground freezing is effective in all soil and ground conditions and has been used for emergency situations in disturbed, displaced or loose ground, where detailed soil characterization could not practically be performed.

The worldwide budget for non fuel mineral exploration was expected to increase by 27 percent in 2003 from the 2002 budget, according to the Metals Economics Group (MEG) of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The increase comes after five years of declining spending for mineral exploration. For the first time in several years, all regional exploration budget estimates for 2003 as defined by MEG would increase from similar 2002 estimates. However, MEG included 193 more companies in its 2003 survey than in 2002. As with previous MEG survey reports, estimates reflect anticipated expenditures rather than actual dollars spent. Caution, therefore, must be taken when comparing 2002 and2003 estimates or evaluating the magnitude of regional changes from year to year. Sample variations and currency exchange rates may influence year-to-year variations of MEG data. Even so, it is likely that the general climate of improved metal prices in 2003 encouraged companies that had previously left the mineral exploration sector or reduced their exploration activity to once again focus on minerals exploration or increase exploration activity and budgets.

In many years' experience as a maker and purchaser of cast-iron coated pipe, I have never met with any standard form of specifications for such. Each water-works company, employing a hydraulic engineer, has, under his direction, prepared complete specifications for the particular conditions required; but I cannot find that any two are alike; and each foundry, in bidding for the supply of such pipe, makes the price to cover the conditions' required. I, therefore, have the honor of offering to the Institute a form of specifications for cast-iron coated water-pipe, that may be found useful to water-works companies and others requiring pipe of this kind. The conditions are all reasonable, and can be carried out by makers without additional cost, and with advantage to the purchaser. Section 1 gives the kind of pipe, with its general characteristics. Section 2 specifies that neutral pig-iron shall be used, since such iron possesses the strength required, and is uniform in its shrinkage. After 216 years, the end of operations at the Corn- wall mine can be foreseen within the next two decades. The story starts in 1732 when three sons of Wiliam Penn-John, Thomas, and Richard-deeded 9669 acres in the Province of Pennsylvania to a Joseph Turner, who assigned it to William Allen. In 1734 Peter Grubb, who had prospected for iron in the area, paid Allen £ 135 for 300 acres of this tract in what is now Lebanon County. In 1737 he was granted a warrant for 142.5 additional acres, which included three hills of outcropping magnetite described as "rich and abundant, forty feet deep, commencing two feet under the earth's surface." This seemingly inexhaustible reserve was to become one of the most valuable deposits in the U. S. before the ore-rich Lake Superior region was developed.

"Revision surgery to replace joints in the human body requires materials that are strong, long-lasting, and biocompatible. Metallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an on-going effort to economically improve their performance. Alloying with inert nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, enhance its corrosion resistance, and elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, without increasing the threat to the human body. The current work has produced a high-nitrogen Co-Cr-Mo alloy through HIP consolidation of metal powders that have undergone nitriding in a mechanically fluidized bed. The already fine microstructure of the powders combined with the increased nitrogen content resulted in significant property gains in the consolidated materials.IntroductionMetallic implants made of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys are already popular because of their proven corrosion and wear resistance properties, but there is an ongoing effort to improve their performance. Research on a Stellite 21 cobalt-chromiummolybdenum alloy has shown that nitrogen alloying can be desirable from several standpoints [l]. Firstly, it has indicated that nitrogen can enhance the mechanical properties of the alloy, which could allow more demanding implant designs. The same work also demonstrated that nitrogen can elevate the temperature at which the metallic implants can be thermally treated, which is desirable in situations in which surface textures are to be sintered to the implant to enhance its fixation properties. Finally, that research work discovered that, not only does nitrogen not harm the corrosion resistance of the cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys, but it may in fact enhance it. Combining this with the fact that small amounts of nitrogen are not considered a threat to the human body, makes nitrogen alloying an attractive alternative for enhancing the properties of Co-Cr-Mo."

While I contemplate the formidable catalogue of bodies and organisations participating in this Conference and the impressive array of qualifications chalked up after the names of the representatives I am indeed honoured to be invited to address you. When I consider the theme you have chosen for your conference I am also somewhat daunted: "The Twenty First Century - Mining for Mankind". It is indeed dramatic, challenging. But what, I ask myself, can a mere KCMG say to all you professional fellows and doctors and academicians? It is not for me to stray on to the more esoteric areas that you will be covering, thereby running the risk of teaching my grandmother how to suck manganese nodules. On the other hand it seems to me that you deserve more than the courtesies, not to say banalities, that are sometimes - sadly, and unjustly - regarded as the stock in trade of diplomats.

This paper reviews the current techniques employed in the prediction of subsidence and how they have been applied to partial extraction systems. The method using influence functions to describe the shape of the profile is investigated in detail and has been adopted to model the subsidence over workings in Huntly. It is compared with the profile methods developed in the United Kingdom and found to predict the subsidence profile more accurately than these methods.

"The results of the fourth annual safety contest, 'mown as the National Safety Competition, contacted by the United States Bureau of Mines are herein announced. A bronze trophy, ‘Sentinels of Safety’, the gift of the Explosives Engineer magazine, has been awarded to the leading mine in each of the five groups into which the mines and quarries that participated in the contest were arranged. These five groups were: anthracite mines, bituminous coal mines, metal mines, nonmetallic-mineral mines, and carries and open-pit mines. The leading plant in each group was the mine whose employee lost the smallest number of days from accidents in proportion to the total number of man hours worked. Where two or more mines operated without a lost-time accident, the winner was adjudged to be the plant which operated the largest number of man hours during the year.The contest was based upon reports of accidents and exposure sent by the competing companies to the Bureau of Mines. Records of the five leading companies in each group were made known to a Committee of Award, consisting of the following seven members: H. Poster Bain, Secretary of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; James F. Callbreath, Secretary of the American Mining Congress; W. H. Cameron, Managing Director of the National Safety Council; H. L. Gandy, Secretary of the National Coal Association; A. T. Goldbeck, Director of the Engineering Bureau of the National Crushed Stone Association; William Green, President of the American Federation of Labor; and A. J. R. Curtis, Assistant to the General Manager of the Portland Cement Association. Members of the committee voted for the winning company in each group in accordance with the rules governing the contest.. A majority vote prevailed."

Safety, from the Latin word "Salvus" -Safe. 1. The condition or state of being safe; freedom from danger or hazard, exemption from hurt, injury, or loss. 2. Freedom from whatever exposes one to danger or from liability to cause, danger, or harm; safeness: hence, the quality of making safe or secure, or of giving confidence, justifying trust, insuring against harm or loss. (From Webster.) The meaning of the word "Safety" by Webster is very explicit, clear, and plain. It is not obscure or imperceptible. What man, woman or child is not familiar with this word? A mere word by itself, but indifference to its significance means the difference between life, death, permanent or partial disability, or injury. There is no question about a safety program being expensive. It is-it produces no commodity-but when properly organized and with a definite goal in view it will pay 'a dividend by increasing the efficiency of the human worker.

MORE than 80 per cent. of the iron produced in the United States and over 30 per cent. of the world's annual production is obtained in the Lake Superior district. Though iron ore was discovered on the Marquette range in 1844, the poor transportation facilities retarded the development of this region for many years. The structure of the Lake Superior basin is essentially an east-west synclinorium with steep dips on the south side of the lake and considerably flatter ones on the north and west. The Upper Huronian series, which -is the iron-bearing one of the formation, on the south side of the lake dips north from 55' to 80°, and on the north side dips south from 8" to 200. The series has been subjected to local folding and faulting, which have influenced the development of the mining systems used.

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews, the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

This report contains a description of the contract activities performed by ENSCO, Inc. under contract No. H0178069. The purpose of this project was to enhance the Bureau of Mine's Cableless Electronic Survey System use to aid in the drilling of long (approx. 2000 feet) boreholes in coal. This drilling is performed as part of the methane drainage program. The system that was ultimately developed was field tested and demonstrated in actual in-mine drilling activities. The significance of this system as compared to previous drill survey systems is the fact that it surveys without having to be inserted and removed for each survey point. It is so designed that it can withstand the shock and vibration experience by the drill string during drilling. This means an increased productivity is now possible in that drill operators can determine drill bit positioning in a near real-time environment.
