Investigations were undertaken to evaluate peroxygen compounds for effective­ness in alkaline cyanide leaching of gold. The addition of peroxygens improved the leach results. Calcium peroxide was the best performed reagent to be employed. Improved reagent consumption followed the trend of calcium peroxide> hydrogen peroxide> no peroxygen addition. In general, preaeration stages could be eliminated, and improved leach rates achieved with no detrimental impact on leach perfor­mance. Interox has not developed an Au Plus (Trade Mark pending) system to utilise this new leach reagent. Initial plant trials are verifying its potential to give additional benefits.

Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper sulfide mineral, which is normally processed using pyrometallurgical methods (i.e., smelting) to produce copper metal. Smelting has several major disadvantages, such as high gas-handling costs, high capital costs, saturation of sulfuric acid market, and inability to treat low-grade concentrates and to recover some by-products, such as zinc, nickel and cobalt. The development of hydrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite is desirable to overcome the problems of smelting. Because chalcopyrite is refractory, the leaching rate for chalcopyrite is very low. Therefore, increasing the leaching rate has been extensively investigated, both in sulfate and chloride media, as well as in the presence of bacteria. Chloride leaching processes have shown relatively high leaching rates. The mechanism of the chloride leaching process has been investigated, but the behavior of chalcopyrite leaching in chloride solution is not clear. Therefore, the effect of the solution redox potential on the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in chloride solution was investigated. In the present study, leaching experiments were carried out using 0.1 M chloride solutions and the results indicate that high leaching rates of chalcopyrite can be achieved at relatively low solution redox potentials.

Government geoscience may be categorised by objective under three headings: Applied Research for Geoscientific Framework Studies, Resource Inventory, and Technical Advice. In Queensland, the Department of Resource Industries is active in all three categories. Under the program-based management system adopted in 1987, three Programs, namely, Geological Survey, Mineral Resources Development, and Energy Resources Development and Utilisation, have geoscience responsibilities.Prime responsibility for geoscience resides with the Geological Survey Program, which provides a geoscientific framework for mineral and energy exploration and the development of the State. Simply stated, the Program goal is to provide geological information when and where it is required. Geological Survey work also encompasses aspects of resource inventory and technical advice, complementing the work of the other two Programs. This role has a 122 year long tradition, for geoscientists of the Geological Survey have been engaged in investigations designed to facilitate the identification and utilisation of the mineral, water and energy resources of Queensland since 1868.

Introduction Although innovative coal extraction technology can be approached from many angles, this paper focuses on three: innovation in response to rising costs, to changing mining conditions, and to regulatory issues. Before exploring these three subjects, however, a basic question needs to be raised. Why Innovation? Coal is widely heralded, and quite correctly so, as the United States' "ace in the hole." It has been said that the U.S. is to coal what the Arabs are to oil. The implication is that we have nearly inexhaustible reserves - that coal is cheap, plentiful, and easy to extract. Indeed, because our current productive capacity is estimated to be 15-20% greater than demand, we have been given a false sense of security about the ease of future coal extraction. Therefore, innovative measures are being concentrated on developing technologies for the demand side of coal, including power generation, synthetic fuels, and industrial applications. What is often forgotten is that the unit cost of producing energy from these new technologies depends critically on the cost of the coal feedstock -in some cases the coal consumed accounts for more than one-third the total cost. Thus, while the developers of the end-use technologies struggle to improve the overall thermal efficiency of their process by one or two per¬centage points to make the energy produced competitive in the marketplace, they often are unaware of the risk of a 3 to 6% increase in coal costs wiping out the expensive, hard-earned results of their research. Energy planners are just beginning to realize that coal is not a uniform commodity available at low cost in infinite quantities. Coal is a heterogeneous material whose cost and quality vary widely with local conditions. To produce the massive amounts of projected coal-based energy at reasonable costs, we urgently need devel¬opments in extraction technology, as well as in end-use technology. Thus, coal extraction, coal conversion and utilization, and end -use energy consumption must be viewed as highly interdependent parts of an energy supply network (Fig. 1). And current emphasis on conversion and utilization must be balanced by more emphasis on upstream technologies, including coal extraction. Even more important, the impacts of innovation (or the lack thereof) in any one technology area in the energy supply network need to be discussed and understood by those working in each of the other areas. Why innovation in coal ex¬traction technology? Figuratively, we are all in the "coal boat" together - geologists, miners, transporters, processors, power producers, distributors, and consumers. Innovation is required from each of these sectors to overcome the obstacles that prevent greater use of our most abundant national energy resource. All other links in the coal energy supply network depend on large volumes of coal produced at reasonable costs. Declines in productivity, therefore, must be reversed; the more difficult mining conditions that will be encountered call for new methods and equipment, and regulatory issues must be resolved if the coal ex¬traction link is to be a strength rather than a weakness in the planned U.S. transition to an economy based more on coal and less on imported petroleum. The modem copper industry presents an excellent opportunity for the application of clean, environmentally friendly techniques using currently available hydrometallurgical technologies. This paper briefly reviews key events in the development of modern hydrometallurgy in Chile. Discussion is given to those prominent events whose impact continues to be felt on most projects currently underway. Mention is also made of the foundations of heap leaching technologies, preceded by agglomeration and acid curing, known as the T.L. Leaching Process, the cornerstone of more recent developments. A review is also presented of the leading copper hydrometallurgy projects of the 1990s. A list of those projects, their tonnages and the estimated date of implementation is provided. The conclusion provides an overview of developments in research and the trends in the implementation of copper hydrometallurgy projects in Chile for the coming years.

"This study deals with the performance evaluation, technical and environmental aspects of different cookstove models (NIRE-02, NIRE-03 & NIRE-04). These cookstove models were designed, fabricated and evaluated following Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and their performance was compared from technical and environmental points of views. The theoretical efficiencies of all the cookstove models are found to be in good agreement with the experimental one. Also, the overall performance of these models is found to be in the order of (NIRE-04 > NIRE-03 > NIRE-02) which is also observed to be much better than that of the traditional cookstoves being used by the people in most of the developing countries around the world. The CO2 emission reduction from these models is found to be between 2.0-3.0 tons per household annually which is ultimately in good agreement with the experimental values.IntroductionMore than 2.5 billion people around the world depends on the biomass based resources for cooking and heating applications which includes wood, cattle dung, charcoal and agriculture residue [1,2]. Generally, people of rural area cook their food on unvented open fire, which burn biomass fuel inefficiently besides it creates many thermal and environment pollution hazardous causing health problems in the women and girl children due to more exposure of emissions. Also the consumption of biomass is very high as compared to the fossil fuels due to the fact that the large population of the developing countries lives in the rural area than that of in the urban area. It is estimated that about 3% of the diseases are caused due to incomplete combustion of biomass, which results in the around 1.8 million premature death every year including around 0.9 million death under five year of their age [3,4].Ramanathan and Carmichael [5] recently found that the black carbon of unburned smoke is playing a major role in global warming. The emission factors for different combinations of fuel and stove tested in China for direct and indirect GHGs as well as other airborne pollutants such as, CO2, CO, CH4, TNMHC, N2O, SOx, NOx, TSP etc. for a typical set of operating parameters [6]. The improved biomass cookstove technology came into assistance which is technically feasible, socially reliable and economically viable [7, 8]. The improved biomass cookstove not only reduces pressure on the biomass resource, but also reduces the environmental pollution and also minimize the time required for collection of fuel wood [9, 10]. Sharma et al. [11] emphasized on the adoption and large-scale propagation of efficient stoves to improve the health of rural women and to reduce the consumption of firewood and environmental pollution."

Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

Results of linear correlations of two to four variables by the least-squares method are presented. The variables include 63 parameters representing coal composition, coal plasticity, and coke strength. The composition parameters are on chemical analyses; the plasticity parameters, on three plastometer and dilatometer tests and four miscellaneous tests; and the coke-strength parameters, on three ASTM indices. Seventy-two to eighty-four plastic coals were used in the plasticity and carbonization tests, which together form the basis of this report; 43 nonplastic or weakly plastic coals were used in the coal-band studies. Plots of relations between volatile matter, carbon, and oxygen contents of 1,860 U.S. coals and the 84 coals used are shown. Similar plots between volatile matter and hydrogen or atomic H/C of the 84 coals are also included. Significances of regression coefficient signs for coal composition parameters in the significant correlations found are discussed. Based on these significances, the following relations are shown: (a) coke strength versus average aromaticity, or mineral matter content, of the parent coal; (b) characteristic temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers, the free-swelling index, or the Gray-King type versus average hydroaromaticity of the coal; and (c) nontemperature parameters of the plastometer and dilatometers versus the physical properties of a certain group of compounds from thermal decomposition of coal. Similarly, significances between the positions of coals in the coal band and the aforementioned relations are also discussed. A structural theory of coal plasticity is proposed. Applications of the correlation results are discussed. Composition parameters, such as carbon, atomic H/C, and calorific value may be used as a basis for selecting coking coals for stronger coke. Plasticity parameters, such as the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometers and the free-swelling index, may be used for the same purpose. Based on the best correlations found, coke-strength indices may be estimated to within 4 to 8 units of the observed values; the end temperatures of the plastometer and dilatometer tests, 5° to 10° C.; and the free-swelling index, within 1 unit. Accuracies of all these estimated values are examined, based on the experimental errors of the data involved. Finally, estimations of plasticity parameters from one test with those from others are shown.

The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

The paper presents a brief history of endeavours to start a mining education programme which began in the days when Papua New Guinea's first large mine, at Panguna (Bougainville), was coming into production. The status of the Public Investment Programme in Mining Engineering and the facilities being created for the education and training of Papua New Guinean citizens in mining and mineral processing are also described. Future expansion plans are also detailed including those for the commencement of petroleum engineering and geological engineering which would include courses in mining geology, exploration geology, engineering geology and petroleum geology. The paper also looks at the manpower training requirements in the lower levels of mining industry such as pit foreman, blasting foreman and other similar positions. It stresses the need to start mining technical training programs at pre- employment level and at certificate level in a technical college, possibly Lae Technical Colleqe.

Design acceleration response spectra (ARS) are directly correlated with dynamic forces and estimated dynamic bridge displacements, which make them a critical aspect of dynamic bridge design. Nonlinear site response analyses are performed for a 1,400-linear-foot bridge site with a SC soil profile at the sides and a SF soil profile in the middle to evaluate the soil profile effects on the bridge analyses. One-dimensional seismic response analysis is commonly performed for site-specific response analysis. SHAKE or similar one-dimensional total-stress equivalent-linear approaches have been used since the 1970s. However, the equivalent linear method has deficiencies when the subsurface soils are susceptible to strain softening. Therefore, various assumptions are made when using the equivalent linear method by practitioners to estimate the SF soil profile site response. With recent advancements in constitutive models, effective stress models have become more popular. Although the effective stress models are generally more complicated and require additional input parameters, they shed further light on the liquefaction mechanism and its effect on the surface ARS. An equivalent-linear one-dimensional seismic response analysis and a non-linear effective-stress seismic response analysis, using DEEPSOIL, were performed to evaluate the ground surface ARS for a proposed bridge site in Orange County. The soil shear strengths were estimated based on cone penetration test results using empirical relationships. The shear modulus degradations (backbone curves) of soil layers were adjusted to match the estimated soil strength at failure. The ARS curves developed from each method were compared to determine the most suitable method for estimating a site-specific design ARS curve for a liquefiable site. Considering that the bridge abutments and the outer bents are founded in bedrock, while the middle bents are founded in liquefiable soils, ARS curves were created for each subsurface condition. Taking into account limitations of the structural analysis software, recommendations were made to combine the multiple ARS curves into a single ARS curve for the structural bridge design.

Water is a critical commodity of our generation and a key compound for the chemical and mining industries. Sustainable industrial development is directly associated with the ability to recover clean water from contaminated sources. Forward Osmosis (FO) is a low-energy footprint membrane process allowing the recovery of clean water from high salinity effluent streams. In FO, water is recovered spontaneously into a concentrated draw solution (CDS). Energy is required to separate the recovered water from the resulting dilute draw solution (DDS). In the current work, the fundamentals of the FO process and the most important aspects affecting its performance are discussed. An energy comparison of FO and conventional water recovery technologies is presented. Finally, the opportunities FO presents in the field of hydrometallurgy are analyzed.

A new technique for the recovery of palladium and platinum and sludge from go12 electrolyte eliminates many of the drawbacks of the zinc-dust cementation process. In the electrolytic refining of gold by the Wohwill method, the electrolyte contains about 100 gpl gold as AuCl, and 100 gpl free hydrochloric acid. Any palladium and platinum contained in impure gold dissolve and accumulate in the electrolyte. When their concentration approaches that of gold, it becomes desirable to discard the electrolyte and to recover the gold and the palladium and platinum. As practiced at Canadian Copper Refiners until recently, discarded electrolyte was treated with sulfur dioxide to precipitate the gold. 2AuCl3 + 6H2O + 3SO2 —2Au + 6HC1 + 3H2SO4 The gold precipitate was filtered off, washed with water, and melted with scrap anodes. The wash water was added to the gold-free filtrate and treated with zinc dust to cement the palladium and platinum. PdCl2 + Zn — Pd + ZnCl2 PtCl4 + 2Zn—Pt + 2ZnCl2 The precipitate was separated and sold as Pd-Pt concentrate, and the barren filtrate and wash water were discarded. The receipts of palladium and platinum at this company were too small to warrant their refining. The process suffered from a number of disadvantages. Handling the gold-free solution was disagreeable, as it was laden with sulfur dioxide even after blowing with air overnight. Subsequent treatment with zinc dust was also troublesome. A large excess of zinc dust was required. Spray, acid mist, and vigorous evolution of hydrogen accompanied the reaction. The Pd-Pt precipitate was grossly contaminated with occluded unreacted zinc and with yellow granules of sulfur, thought to be formed by the reduction of sulfur dioxide and its derivatives. Repeated boiling of the precipitate with hydrochloric acid and washing with water decreased somewhat, but did not eliminate, the zinc. After drying overnight, the precipitate hardened to a clinkerlike mass that was difficult to grind. Grinding, handling, and packing created heavy dusting. Even weighing in an analytical balance generated dust, indicating that the powder was easily charged with static electricity. The total palladium and platinum content of the powder varied from 56 to 72 pct, with an average of 65 pct. The powder dissolved in aqua regia with difficulty, leaving a small amount of insoluble residue. However, the main drawback of the process was the strongly hygroscopic Pd-Pt product. The powder showed a marked though erratic increase in weight and a corresponding decrease in assay on exposure to air, even during the course of laboratory analysis. Such changes were the source of disagreement between Canadian Copper Refiners and the buyers of concentrate. The cause of the change in weight is believed to be hydrogen, liberated by the action of zinc dust on hydrochloric acid. Some of this hydrogen was adsorbed so strongly by the precipitate that it could not be driven off during the drying. On exposure to air it oxidized catalytically, forming water. Experiments soon showed that the entire process of treatment of discarded electrolyte then in use would have to be changed. A small quantity of apparatus was moved into the gold room, and experimentation was held to a minimum compatible with the development of a new process. PALLADIUM AND PLATINUM PRECIPITATION It was thought that zinc could be replaced with a reagent other than a hydrogen-evolving metal. Semiquantitative experiments showed that platinum and palladium could be precipitated completely from the gold-free solutions with such well-known reagents as sodium formate, formic acid, formaldehyde, and paraformaldehyde. Sodium formate was the preferred reagent, since the other three are volatile and somewhat toxic. The gold-free solutions used were those saturated with sulfur dioxide, partly freed of sulfur dioxide by aerating overnight, completely freed by boiling, as well as strongly and weakly acidic, neutral, and alkaline solutions. The reactions are complex and can be represented by these over-all equations: PdC1, + HCOONa — Pd + NaCl + HC1 + Co2 PtCl4 + 2HCOONa — Pt + 2NaCl + 2HC1 + 2CCX, Strongly acidic solutions required as much as five times the theoretical amount of sodium formate as did solutions neutralized to pH 4.5. This article introduces the basic definitions and philosophy behind process hazard evaluation procedures and the determination of risk as being a function of accident probabi1ity and accident consequence. The general concepts of good engineering practice and predictive hazard evaluation are discussed. The most commonly employed methods used in the processing industries are reviewed with an eye towards briefly presenting what each method offers as far as information, time and resources required, etc. Some initial references on the actual practical use of each technique in the processing industries are also given.

Buoyant levels of world economic growth and recovery in intensity of metals usage suggest that demand for minerals will remain relatively strong into the 1990's. Supply constraints, low stock to use ratios, financial and political factors imply lower elasticities of supply for minerals in the future. The outlook for minerals and metals prices from a pro-ducers viewpoint is, accordingly, promising.The recent recovery in world minerals prices, following strong growth in the world economy over the last few years, makes it appropriate to consider the structural forces at work in the formation of world demand and supply of minerals. This paper will review past trends and consider some of the main economic issues facing the mining industry in the 1990's.

During July and August, 1899, the writer took advantage of an opportunity of going to Shansi to gather some information concerning the geology and value of the already famous coalfields of that province. The long journey, mainly on slow river-boats, and the limited time at command, allowed only about ten days of work to be done in the coal-fields around Tsê Chou. The geologic structure and the rock-formations were found to be simple and quite regular, so that in that time the accompanying sketch-map (Pig. 1) was made, and a fairly good idea of the distribution of the coal and general geologic features was obtained. The map was made by measuring a base-line about three-quarters of a mile long, triangulating for principal points over the field, and filling in the details by rapid sketches. The few elevations marked on the map were taken with an aneroid barometer. Only a few of the great number of towns and villages that are within this densely populated area are shown; and the coal-mines indicated are not the only ones within the area, but the ones where most of the following information about the coal was obtained. The value of this coal-field was first clearly set before the scientific and commercial world by Baron von Richthofen,* who made a geologic reconnaissance of Shansi in 1870. Since that time the hostile attitude of the Chinese government and people towards foreigners and their enterprises has kept the coal-fields from being developed. But the last few years of rapid change in the conditions of China have at last apparently opened a way for the exploitation of this coal-field. In 1820, the Board of Public Works was considering some improvements to the canal, in order to reduce the cost of transportation, and in its annual report for that year gives a description of the method of loading the coal from the pit to the boat, and also from the boat to the dealer's yard, which is illuminating in showing how coal of this type should not be handled. It follows:- "It will be seen by the estimates, that the improving the present canal, forming a canal of large dimensions, from the head of the present lower canal to Sabbot Island; erecting locks of large capacity, and making a communication with the river, so as to completely accommodate the coal trade, (except it should hereafter be found necessary to make another communication with the river,) will not cost more than 126,000 dollars. But as there is some doubt whether the streams that may be received into the canal between Sabbot Island and the upper arch, will at all times be competent to supply the locks on that portion, we will extend our calculation to a point nearly half a mile above Pleasants' Island; where, by erecting a dam, any desired quantity may be thrown into the canal. This extension of the canal with one lock, and the dam across the river, is estimated at 34,000 dollars, making in the whole a little over 160,000 dollars. There will then remain a surplus of 40,000 dollars after completing the works to the point last mentioned. "In order to discover what effect the improvement of this first section will have on the tolls, it will be necessary to take a view of the present state of the coal trade, and endeavor to ascertain what change will result from the increased facility of transportation. "That part of the business which is carried on by water, is conducted nearly in this way. When the coal is drawn out of the mines, it is thrown in a heap near the mouth of the mine, or shaft; it is then loaded into carts, and carried to the river bank, where, in some instances, it is discharged from the cart at the brow of the bank, and runs down to the beach near the water's edge; then shovelled into wheel-barrows, and wheeled aboard of the boat, and discharged from the barrows by upsetting. In other instances, the carts are driven on to a kind of scaffold, furnished with a wide spout or director at the edge; by which the coal is conveyed immediately into the boats. These boats are the common James river poplar batteaux, and require three men to each. The up-stream navigation being laborious, the boats are built of light materials, and continue fit for service but a short time, (say) from two to three years; their cost, when new, from fifty to one hundred dollars. "When the river is tolerably flush of water, one of these boats will carry about two hundred bushels; but in low water their load is sometimes diminished to one hundred, and even as low as eighty bushels. "The Wasa Lake property is a block of about 1,640 acres in Beauchastel township, Quebec. Gold was discovered there first in 1936 in what is now known as the 'Southern area ( Fig. 1). Stripping and trenching were followed by 9,218 feet of diamond drilling in twenty holes. A number of good intersections were obtained, but their interpretation in terms of ore was difficult. A shaft was then sunk to 220 feet vertical depth. Thirteen hundred feet of lateral work and 543 feet of diamond drilling were completed at the 200-foot level before work was discontinued in 1938. Results up to this point had been just fair.Early in 1944, surface diamond drilling was resumed. The first hole cut material of ore grade in a strong shear zone 1,000 feet north of the old workings, and holes to the east and west showed this to be an extensive gold-bearing zone.In August 1945, a main working shaft was started. This has been sunk to 550 feet slope depth. A cross-cut at 390 feet vertical depth was driven to the ore zone and, by drifting and drilling at regular intervals, a length of 725 feet had been tested to December 31st, 1946 ( Figs. 1 and 2).
