"Material substitution occurs continuously in response to competitive and economic pressures. Technical development can accelerate or slow substitution by improving the performance of the invading or defending material. The choices are seldom simple and have to be made in the context of continuous commercial change.The development and commercialization of a new aluminum material is examined. The material has been introduced into· several different markets, so it is possible to compare and contrast the degree of success obtained in each.IntroductionAluminum-based materials have been in use for over one hundred years and , therefore, the development of a new family of alloys is rare. In the early 1970s, Dr. L.R. Morris and his coworkers at Alcan' s Kingston Research Centre started work on what was, at the time, something of a scientific curiosity-a family of alloys strengthened by an unusual mechanism.This paper deals with the development and commercialization of what became known as the Alcan 255 alloys"". These alloys have found uses in several markets, usually as improved substitutes for existing materials. Forecasting the usefulness of a substitute material in an existing marketplace is difficult, in part, because even material users are seldom able to specify precisely their requirements. This uncertainty can cause the failure of some substitutions but can also lead to opportunities which were not initially obvious.Technical BackgroundPure aluminum is a soft, weak material. It can be strengthened by the addition of various alloying elements and by work hardening. Alloying elements usually act by forming solid solutions which are stronger than the pure metal or by precipitating during heat treating or aging and so preventing the easy movement of dislocations during deformation. Elements which can perform either role had been investigated for decades and were thought to offer little chance of technical breakthrough in 1970. An outgrowth of the then new and exciting research on directional solidification seemed, however, to offer such promise.Some aluminum-iran-manganese alloys will solidify under certain conditions as 'coupled growth' eutectics (Figs. I and 2). The microstructure shows one phase growing as long rods through the other. This is an uncommon structure and it was investigated to see if it had equally unusual properties. On deformation by rolling the rods were broken up into small equiaxed , evenly-spaced particles (Fig. 3). Materials with this structure were found to be stronger than other alloys with similar amounts of alloying addition, and to resist thermal softening remarkably well. This combination of properties was thought initially to be due directly to the particles by a dispersion strengthening mechanism, but later this was found not to be strictly true."

This study tries to predict blast-induced flyrock using intelligent modelling techniques. Flyrock is a site-specific phenomenon. Design variables and rock properties highly influence flyrock throw distance. Site investigations were conducted in a sandstone quarry. Fundamental operational parameters, blast dimensions, bench face condition, and rock mass structure were monitored. Stepwise regression technique was applied for variable selection. Burden–hole diameter ratio, in situ block size, and powder factor were determined as the most significant parameters. Considering output of stepwise regression, artificial neural network, ANFIS, and Gaussian process regression techniques were applied to predict flyrock throw. A comprehensive validation was performed using twelve different performance indices. Pre-determination of input parameters supported development of successful soft computing applications. Rock block size was found to be an appropriate input variable for flyrock modelling. In addition to classical performance indices, standardized and symmetric accuracy metrics were quite useful in model validation process. The intelligent models predict flyrock range with an error less than 6 m. The mean percentage errors are lower than 10%. ANFIS seems to be the best model for flyrock prediction. The calculated mean absolute error is 5.36 for ANFIS model.

"One critical factor in mineral reserves reporting, as well as mine-reserves reconciliation, is the impact of dilution and ore loss in the mining process. This paper considers the implications of various factors on dilution and ore loss projections, by orebody geometry, mining method, and ore control systems. We also discuss the implications of resource estimation methodology on dilution for reserves. DEFINITIONS Dilution and ore loss are two critical concepts in mining, which address the differences encountered between modeled grade and tonnages and actual production. Dilution is volume increase and grade reduction caused by multiple factors, chief among which are mining of waste material along ore-waste contacts, mining of internal waste as ore, and misclassification of waste as ore in the ore control process. There are also geostatistical and estimation aspects sometimes lumped with dilution, including the volume-variance effect (the tendency for small volumes of material to include a less regular distribution of grade than large volumes of material). Ore loss is described as reductions of ore volumes in the mining process due to misclassification of ore as waste in the ore control process, exclusion of discontinuous mineralization from mining due to geometry or continuity, and mechanical losses in the mining process. Dilution is typically taken as an increase in tonnes of ore with no change in contained metal (and thus results in a reduction in grade.) (Some workers consider the likely grade of the diluting material as well, particularly in deposits with gradational grade boundaries—this will be addressed later in the text.) Ore loss is typically taken as a reduction in tonnes at average grade of the ore, and thus results in a reduction in both tonnes and contained metal. As an industry approaches stabilization, greater and greater stress must be laid on its technologic progress, which becomes a prime aid in improving its condition. The oil industry is tending toward this stage and hence its engineers must be pressed into greater service to prevent stabilization and stagnation from becoming synonymous, and to supply, either by improvements in processes or by new machinery, a means of obtaining savings in raw and finished products. Thus profits can be assured warranting continued investment. It may be repeated, technology must apply a slight improvement here, a change there, or a complete renovation, to eliminate inefficiencies and make each dollar invested yield greater results. The profits of ycstcrday were made of rich strikes, of monopolized patents or processes, of control of prices and of markets. Sixty-five years of growth, of large investment, of healthful competition, and of expanding markets, have put the oil industry in the foremost rank of world industries. .Just as the railroads passed a similar period of expansion and growth, and arc being stabilized with reasonable profits, so the oil industry must take advantage of the efforts of its engineers and experts to promote its healthful growth and a better service to the people. Herein is attempted a review of recent progress in which is presented the advances in exploration, production engineering, transportation, refining and greater efficiency in uses of petroleum, with a view not only to stressing important new processes and methods, but also the problems that press for solution. This review can only touch outstanding developments of recent years, but the several Petroleum Division symposiums of our program will present details worthy of attention. Exploration Geology offers directly little new in the technique of oil-finding— major stress being laid on improvement in subsurface correlation by means of foraminifera1 studies, additions to the knowledge of which are being made, slowly but surely, and by means of mineral, and especially heavy mineral, determinations in well samples. B. M. Larsen (U. S. Steel Co., Kearny, N. J.)—Could we have some sort of an estimate on the cost of calcium carbide for this treatment? Also, if you used calcium carbide on carbon-saturated iron, would some effect hold back the reaction? P. M. Hulme (authors' reply)—As far as I know we have not worked on carbon-saturated iron. About 3½ pct C is the highest we have worked on. As far as cost goes, it depends on how much sulphur You have to take out. It will run anywhere from $0.75 to $2.00 a ton overall cost including the cost of carbide per ton of metal treated. That is, using the efficiencies that we show in this paper. We are getting better efficiencies now. T. L. Joseph (University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minn.)—Did you say 2 lb of calcium compound? Mr. Hulme—That is based on 10 lb of calcium carbide per lb of sulphur removed. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—We have run this type of desulphurization process at the blast furnace. We have desulphurized between 100 and 200 at the blast furnace and taken the iron right out of the furnace with an injector system. The process gave us quite varied results; stratified iron, high sulphur on the top and low sulphur on the bottom, and we decided it was impractical. Mr. Hulme Just what was the type of injection equipment? Dr. Babcock—Nitrogen gas for one injection method and we used fairly large gun equipment. We followed the same general type of pattern you show only on a larger scale. Mr. Hulme—It sounds very much like what we call the gale of wind method. We have very erratic results with that. Dr. Babcock—We have tried several types, and particle sizes. The operation was not satisfactory. Mr. Hulme—Of course, we have never tried it on that scale except on a continuous basis. That is the reason we abandoned the idea of working on 35 ton ladles on a batch principle and took it as it came out of the cupola and treated it on the fly on a continuous basis. Dr. Babcock—When you compare the relative effectiveness of the process as carried out, it does not give a very favorable comparison of that process which is already developed. THE senior author of this paper has expressed the belief that when gamma iron transforms into alpha iron on reaching the A3 point, each gamma grain does not change bodily into one or more alpha grains but that the alpha phase forms first at the boundaries and along the crystallographic planes of the austenite grains.1 To quote: On cooling through the point A, at about 900° C., iron passes from the gamma condition to a. new allotropic form generally designated as alpha. This transforma¬tion, however, is not instantaneous. There are good reasons for believing that it begins at the grain boundaries and along the octahedral planes of the crystals and that it progresses until each grain of gamma iron is changed into a grain of alpha iron, the resulting structure being similar to that of gamma iron. Were it possible to retain at room temperature pure iron but partially transformed, it seems probable that a Widmanstättian structure, or rather, as later explained, a martensitic structure would be observed (Fig. 1), consisting of alpha iron at the boundaries and at the octahedral planes, and of a groundmass of gamma iron. In order to confirm, if possible, the accuracy of that view, a number of experiments were conducted. Polished samples of electrolytic iron were heated in a vacuum, maintained in the gamma range for several hours and quenched in different media. It was hoped by such means to produce and retain on the polished surfaces a pattern which would reveal the mechanism of the allotropic transformation. The samples were placed in evacuated quartz tubes, heated to 1000° C. and held 2 hr. at that temperature. The tubes were then immersed in the quenching bath. Iced brine and liquid air were used first. The polyhedral austenitic structure existing at the time of immersion was very clearly revealed (Fig. 2). This is generally ascribed to iron volatilizing at the grain boundaries.

During the 1998 Annual Conference of the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE), the Seismograph Section established a subcommittee for the purpose of compiling a list of all regulations pertaining to limits imposed on ground vibration generated by blasting. The goal of this project was to determine the vibration regulatory levels being enforced, with the further intention of examining their scope, and uniformity. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the consistency of the existing regulations with the current scientific findings on structural response and damage potential.

The Intec Copper Process is an internationally patented hydrometallurgical process for the extraction of pure copper and precious metals from sulfide concentrates. Developed and proven in Sydney, Australia at a cost of US$15m over the last ten years, the Intec Copper Process is now ready for commercial application. The Intec Copper Process has several notable advantages over both smelting and other hydrometallurgical processes. Starting from a base of substantially lower capital and operating costs than any other conventional or developing process, the Intec Copper Process is economically viable at capacity levels as low as 15,000tpa-Cu, and capable of accepting low grade and metallurgically complex concentrates. Precious metals are recovered within the Intec Copper Process circuit, without the need to re-treatment of the environmentally stable solid residues. The Intec Copper Process offers the lowest energy consumption of the available technologies, with no liquid emissions or production of noxious gases. Unlike smelting, sulfur is recovered in the solid residues in elemental form.

The aim of this paper is the study of the pollution of soils in greenhouses because of the use of pesticides. The degree of pollution was studied in relation with the mineralogical and pedologic properties of the soil. The study was con-ducted in the region of Kountoura, Palaiochora, situated in the south of the prefecture of Hania/Greece. Several samples of soil, originated from 4 greenhouses were analyzed. 5 pesticides with organic drastic compounds were chosen for analytical determination using GC-MS from 18 which were applied in total during the period of sampling. It was concluded that the adsorption of pesticides in the soil of greenhouses is connected with the percentage of the clay fraction and the content of organic carbon.

Orica Mining Services (Orica) in partnership with Coal and Allied’s Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has developed a risk management process to maximise mining efficiency whilst controlling vibration and maintaining critical electricity continuity to New South Wales (NSW) electricity grid in the Riverview Pit. The issue is a high tension tower which supplies electricity located within 40 m of mining and blasting activities. The process involved developing an understanding of the relationship between vibration, explosives, geology and the location of the blasting in the geological horizon. From this an optimum methodology for blasting in each region was developed.

A novel chitosan-pyridoxal-epichlorohydrin was synthesized and evaluated in our laboratories. The evaluation was achieved by performing kinetic and equilibrium studies of copper sorption. The parameters examined were pH, temperature, concentration of copper, particle size and selectivity of copper sorption against iron, zinc, cadmium and cobalt. It was found that pH was the most important parameter, and sorption of copper increased with pH increase in the range pH 2.5-6.0. The low activation energy of the sorption reaction, 1 1.13 kJ/mole (2.66 Kcal/mole), showed that temperature was not an important parameter. The synthesized chitosan was selective against iron, zinc, cadmium and cobalt. The selectivity with respect to last three metals was achieved by the kinetic difference of sorption, as sorption of copper was much faster than for other metals. Iron (Fe2+) does not adsorb on chitosan. The mechanism governing the sorption of copper is intraparticle diffusion. This finding was supported by the dependance of copper sorption on the square root of time, the low activation energy, and the fit of experimental data in the diffusion through the product layer equation.

Over the past several years a great deal of information on blasting vibrations and their effects on structures has been generated. Much of this knowledge has been gained through the use of ground vibration measuring equipment. While this type of information is valuable and gives us great insight into damage that can be incurred by structures from this source, very little, if any, information of this quality is available for the vast majority of cases in which an engineer is called upon to investigate alleged damage from ground vibrations. For the investigative engineer, then, the problem becomes one of accumulating whatever data is available and drawing a conclusion as to whether or not the subject structure was in fact damaged by the blasting vibrations. Such an analysis certainly requires a working knowledge of the literature on the subject and as much experience as he can bring to bear. Even thus armed, however, the data is often ambiguous, confusing, and/or contradictory. A practical approach is presented herein to aid the engineering investigator in arriving at the best possible conclusion available with the information at hand.

This work proposes a capacitive load cell for conical picks to enable underground continuous mining machine operators to perform their roles away from known hazardous regions near the machine. The load cell is embedded in commercially available flexible printed circuit board, integrates with the target tooling, and demonstrates in situ force sensing of vibration signatures for continuous mining cutting tools. Changes in material constitution, tool mass, and tool geometry cause modal variations in vibrational response measurable with force sensors at the cutting interface. Time-series measurements are captured during rock cutting tests using a linear cutting machine. These measurements are segmented into small windows, less than 0.25 s, and are preprocessed using the fast Fourier transform, which highlights the modal variations. The transformed measurements are then classified into different material and wear categories using support-vector machines with the radial basis function kernel. Different normalization schemes and Fourier transform methods are tested for signal preprocessing. Results show that the power spectral density measurements with normally distributed coefficients give good results for material classification, while the normalized time-domain measurements give better results for wear classification. Under laboratory conditions, this technique is shown to classify material and wear categories with F1 score above 0.85 out of 1.0 for our experiment. This technology could be used to assist operators in assessing material and wear conditions from a safer distance. It has applications in the coal mining industry as well as other applications which use conical picks such as road milling.

A survey of recent literature indicates that sulphides occur in the volcanic rocks of the Archean, or in sedimentary rocks intercalated with the volcanic rocks. The thick sedimentary sections are generally poor in sulphides. Thus, the widespread pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization in the Archean may be largely of volcanic origin. Introduction I N this paper, commercial base-metal deposits will not be considered, as they are dealt with in other papers of the Symposium. Instead, attention will be focused on those sulphides, often associated with graphitic argillites or tuffs, which have appeared in such embarrassing abundance in electromagnetic surveys of Archean areas. The data on which the paper is based are drawn from recent reports of the Ontario Department of Mines, the Quebec Department of Natural Resources and the Geological Survey of Canada. The information available from these sources is unfortunately limited, because sulphides commonly occur in sheared rocks, such as black argillites and tuffs, which rarely form conspicuous outcrops, and may not be exposed at all. Thus, in the absence of geophysical information, even detailed mapping may fail to reveal the presence of sulphide-rich rocks.

The Basic Oxygen Process shop at Gary Works is a three vessel shop tapping 220 ton heats. The larger portion of the heats are teemed into ingot molds with the remaining heats being continuously cast in a single strand continuous slab caster. Ingot production includes a wide range of carbon, alloy, and high-strength steels in many ingot sizes for bar, structural, plate and sheet and tin products. Individual ingot weights vary with the number of ingots per heat ranging from a high of 48 to a low of five. Caster production is primarily Riband, a proprietary low carbon grade for sheet and tin applications developed by United States Steel for continuous casting; some Riband steel is vacuum degassed prior to casting. Maintaining a satisfactory level of ladle performance on both ingot and caster heats with a high production rate and widely varied product mix is a demanding and exacting job requiring the best of equipment, materials, and, most importantly, personnel. The improving trend in ladle performance in the No. 1 BOP shop at Gary is due to a combination of factors, which will be described in the following presentation.

El presente texto describe la evolución tectónica y metalogenética de la litósfera del Sur peruano donde la corteza está formada por diferentes bloques estructurales yuxtapuestos, cada uno de los cuales tiene su propia evolución sedimentaria, tectónica, magmática y metalogenética. Asimismo, se han determinado cinco bloques, tres de loscuales forman el Macizo de Arequipa y los otros dos, son parte del Altiplano. Estos bloques se han acretado al borde de Sudamérica hace unos 1,000 Ma. Los límites de estos grandes bloques están marcados por complejos sistemas de fallas, en algunos casos también por unidades magmáticas y además por depósitos minerales asociados. Estos bloques estructurales condicionaron la paleogeografía mesozoica, que a su vez controló la evolución andina, y por lo tanto la distribución de depósitos minerales tan complejo como el mismo substrato. En consecuencia, la identificación de estos límites o grandes estructuras, permite definir mejor los dominios geotectónicos o metalogenéticos.

The processes involved in strategic planning and in the identification. evaluation, and development of projects are described. The monitoring and control of capital as well as project construction and production management. are discussed. Finally, the important role of project work in the development of management is stated, and the necessity for the continual assessment of the effectiveness of the project organization is stressed.

Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. IT is well known that the excellent mica from Brazil played a most vital role in World War II. Increased production from Brazil was necessary and with the assent of the Brazilian Government engineers from the United States went down to study the problem. One of the means advocated by a former Chief of Metals and Minerals Branch of the Board of Economic Warfare, Mr. Carl Schwegler, was the use of stripping machinery. On a pegmatite dike favorable for stripping, a small number of miners could produce as much mica per day as an underground mine employing many times the same number of men. TYPE OF DEPOSIT FAVORABLE The most favorable type of pegmatite for stripping is that which lies more or less parallel to the surface of the slope of a hill. Pegmatite dikes that cut directly into a hill are not suitable for stripping except where a long outcrop extends along the slope. Then just the outcrop could be stripped to some advantage. The ratio at no time should be greater than I:3; i.e., I cu. m. of pegmatite to 3 cu. m. of waste, unless the pegmatite was extremely rich throughout the dike. THE ECONOMICS OF STRIPPING When a mineral is badly needed to win a war, not too much heed can be paid to costs. The object is to produce rapidly and in quantity. Again, a deposit containing a superior grade of mica may be worked although the pegmatite is more costly to work than another deposit containing a considerably greater amount of poor-grade mica. For example: one deposit may have a little mica that will run II per cent good stain and better when trimmed and contain 2 kg. of crude mica per cubic meter of pegmatite, while another may run 0.2 per cent of good stain and better, and have a mica content of 10 kg. per cubic meter. A number of stripping projects were found in the vicinity of Raul Soares, Minas Gerais. These were sampled in the various old workings by cutting out a cubic meter of pegmatite and saving the usable mica. Because of the proximity to the surface of most stripping projects, about 34 per cent only of the mica is good for trimming. The other 66 per cent is too badly weathered to be of use. In Table I are given data collected on five properties near Raul Soares. In Table I, "value per cubic meter of pegmatite" means the value of the qualified mica obtainable. This does not include the half trimmed and splittings. By "value per cubic meter of matter" is meant the value of the qualified mica per cubic meter of material excavated; i.e. both waste and pegmatite. This is the figure that should he used to determine whether the operation will be profitable or not, as the cost of stripping is about $0.I4 per cubic meter. With new machinery not subject to breakdowns, the cost per cubic meter should be around $0.10 to $0.I5. To this should be
