Anything to do with radioactive waste disposal in these days is regarded in a very negative light and with the thought that no possible good could come of anything connected with it. However, it should be remembered that the Austrian government's disposal of some tailings from the Joachimsthal mines resulted in what was probably the most important scientific discovery of this century. In 1898 the Austrian government agreed to give a Polish research assistant working at the School of Physics in Paris one ton of tailings to enable her to carry on her research. Her meagre stipend and the lack of a research grant did not allow her to purchase the ore which was relatively expensive. The uranium oxide in it being used to colour the famous Czechoslovakian glassware. As we all know, from this ton of ore Marie Curie by her own physical labours extracted one gram of radium. When she started this research she was pregnant with her first child. Nothing of course was known at the time about the biological effects of radiation. Very shortly, of course, the acute effects such as skin burns were observed but it was some years before the chronic effects were noted. It is impossible to estimate to what cumulative amount of radiation that Marie, Pierre and their daughter Irene were exposed but it must have been enormous and it took its toll. Marie complained for many years of fatigue and exhaustion and at one point she was seriously ill with some kidney problem which was probably due to toxic effects of ingestion of uranium. She lived until she was 67, however, and died of leukemia. Her eldest child, Irene, who carried on her work, did not live as long; she died of leukemia at 57. The other daughter, Eve, related how her mother and she went on a skiing holiday not many years before her death, and how her mother at this time would swim 300 meters at a stretch. (Curie, 1937). This suppleness of limb could have been due to the anti-inflammatory action of radiation. Even today, patients in France with certain types of rheumatic conditions are treated with injections of radium, where other anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or cortisone have not worked. "Multiphysics models are essentially first principles models capable of providing very accurate micro scale predictions. The computational requirements for Multiphysics Models are extensive, precluding their direct use for flowsheet simulations. Population balance models get their form from theory but the model parameters have to be provided from experiments. The prediction errors for the population balance models are typically significantly higher than those for the Multiphysics Models but the computational effort for Population Balance Models is typically much less than that for the Multiphysics models. The hybrid model described here takes advantage of the strengths of each of the two primary model types and minimizing the weaknesses of each. The Multiphysics Model is used to perform high accuracy "experiments" that are difficult or impossible to conduct in laboratories or plants. The results of these experiments are combined with standard laboratory or plant data to parameterize and further enhance the Population Balance portion of the hybrid model. The creation of a useful Hybrid Model is demonstrated for a MP1000 secondary crusher. The validation of the hybrid crusher model is also presented. Finally the use of the Hybrid Model is illustrated in a full comminution flowsheet simulator."

In this article, influences of restraint and MgO content on densification of alumina-magnesia castable during heating were experimentally studied. High thermal expansion-alumina-magnesia castable specimens were surrounded by low thermal expansion-alumina-silica castables, and heated in an electric furnace. Doing so allows restrained heating of alumina-magnesia castable. According to the results of simple calculations, the restraint stresses were estimated to be between 2 to 20 MPa, so the experimental conditions were considered reasonable. As a result of the experiments, it was verified that restraint densifies alumina-magnesia castable, resulting in an increase in modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. The densification effect of restraint became larger as the MgO content increased. The effects are attributable to an in-situ spinel forming reaction, which improves corrosion resistance.Taking the temperature distribution in the castable lining into account, large restraint stress is expected for the hot face while only a little effect is expected for back end. Thus, excessive difference in material property in the thickness direction, which is undesirable in terms of structural spalling, is a concern.Hence, the MgO content of alumina-magnesia castable should be determined carefully, taking not only corrosion resistance but also spalling resistance into consideration.

Nowadays, the demand for a finer grind in minerals processing has set new challenges within the industry, particularly for grinding technology. Apart from a finer grind, energy efficiency is also a key driver in optimising comminution technology.Stirred milling technology, already proven in many other industries, delivers a modern, sophisticated, flexible and energy efficient grinding solution for fine and ultra fine grinding in minerals processing. Fine grinding technology is utilised particularly in concentrate regrinding to complete the liberation of valuable minerals after the first stage of concentration. Maintaining the correct particle and particle size distribution of the regrind product is crucial for downstream process performance. Stirred milling technology offers the unique possibility for online control and optimisation of the regrind product particle size. This paper describes the basis of this online control possibility and discusses the implementation of stirred milling technology in minerals processing, particularly in regrinding applications. The paper elaborates on the significance of producing ultra-low-moisture ore concentrate, the operating principle and technical features of thermocompression- filtration process, the kinetics involved in the dewatering process, and the technological process system and equipment used. It is pointed out that it is possible to reduce the moisture of fine ore concentrate to a minimum. By way of example, the case of the treatment of flotation molybdenum (Mo) using the thermocompression- filtration process is cited.

Bingham has produced 6 per cent. of this country's copper. In total production, it ranks fourth among the copper camps of North America, the order being Butte, Michigan, Bisbee, and Bingham. In its annual production, it held that same rank until 1919, when its production was exceeded by the combined production of the Globe-Miami district of Arizona. Bingham has also been a lead camp of the first order. Utah ranks third among the lead-producing states, and its production comes largely from three camps which, in the order of their productivity, are: Bingham, Tintic, Park City. Bingham's silver production is important, but it does not rank high as a silver producer. Utah owes its rank as first among the silver-producing states to Tintic, a camp 40 miles due south of Bingham. The United States Mineral Resources reports a total production from Bingham for the period 1865-1920 having a gross value of $528,043,432. History of the Bingham District Bingham is on the eastern flank of the Oquirrh range 30 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, from which it can be reached in an hour by auto, or by the Denver & Rio Grande or the Bingham & Garfield railroads. The automobile route is a paved road across the floor of Great Salt Lake Valley, through farming country. The Bingham & Garfield railway leaves the level of Great Salt Lake at the northern end of the Oquirrh range, and in 20 miles it climbs 2100 ft., and deposits the traveler upon a shelf cut in the side of Bingham Canyon below most of the mines, which are farther up Bingham Canyon and its tributary Carr Fork. Below lies the town, a narrow ribbon running for a couple of miles along the bottom of a canyon 2000 ft. deep—an almost impossible site for a community numbering, in prosperous times, 5000 to 7000 inhabitants drawn from all quarters of the globe. Up the canyon and down, and beneath the steep slopes nearby, and beneath the town itself, are the mining operations of over half a century. The use of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation is becoming universally accepted. However their use in limiting peak particle vibrations levels is still in its infancy. Most of which is anecdotal, in that few actual scientific studies have been carried and published. This paper details the research work carried out at a limestone quarry in the County of North Yorkshire in Northern England. Here a series of blasts were carried out some used non-electric detonators whilst others used electronic detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out at the same burden, spacing and deck charge weight loadings. Initially, the key variable was the difference in detonator type and then leading on to using the electronic detonators at specific exact different detonator timing intervals. Later the study was extended to include double row as well as single row blasts.

"The use of electromagnetic field to remove suspended particles from metals such as aluminum by pushing to the boundary has been well studied. However, the potential of this method is yet to be exploited for the removal of inclusions from silicon. Considering the increasing amount of Top-cut SoG-Si scraps year upon year, there is the need to harness all the potentials of technologies to recycle this materials to ensure sustainability. This study investigates, and discusses new results on the effect of processing parameters such as composition, coil current, and frequency on the removal of inclusions from silicon under high frequency AC electromagnetic field.IntroductionThe solar cell silicon making industry requires pure and clean silicon in order to maximize the conversion potential of the solar cell material. The conversion efficiency of solar cells is limited by minority carrier recombination at dislocations and those intra-granular defects such as impurities, small clusters of atoms, or precipitates [1]. Recent global developments in the energy sector with a drive for the production of clean, reliable, and affordable energy have stirred a rapid growth in the production of photovoltaic (PV) cells.[2] Thus over the years, silicon based PV cells has seen a lot of growth as it has a PV market share of over 90 % [3] either as single-crystalline silicon, or multi-crystalline Si (MC-Si), or amorphous Si [4]. MC-Si produced by directional solidification of solar grade silicon melt dominates the silicon PV market. During the directional solidification process, SiC and Si3N4 particles within the melt are pushed by the solidification front to the top of the ingot which is the last to solidify. Therefore the top of the ingot is cut generating what is known as top-cut solar silicon scraps. The Si3N4 particles are mainly from the coating material at the inside surface of the silica crucible and from the air absorption during solidification process. The SiC particles mainly stem from the carbon reduction process of the primary production of silicon [5]. For sustainability the silicon in the top-cut silicon scraps must be recovered. Therefore methods for removing non-metallic particles, such as SiC and Si3N4, from the silicon are important in order to recycle the top-cut scraps to a useful feedstock for the silicon solar cells manufacturing."

The cable shovel excavator is used for primary production in many surface mining operations. A major problem in shovel excavation is the variability of material diggability, resulting in varying mechanical energy input and stress loading of shovel dipper-and-tooth assembly across the working bench. This variability has a huge impact on the shovel dipper and tooth assembly in hard formations. In addition, the geometrical constraints within the working environment impose production limitations resulting in low production efficiency and high operating costs. A potential solution to the above problems is the application of an intelligent cable shovel excavation(ICSE) technology. In this paper, dynamic models of the cable shovel excavator are developed with numerical examples. These models form the basis for developing dynamic shovel simulators for an intelligent shovel excavation technology. The dynamic equations are developed using the Newton-Euler techniques. The path trajectories for efficient excavation, dynamic velocity and acceleration profiles, and dimensioned parameters for optimum feed force, torques and momentum of shovel boom-bucket assembly are modeled and used for efficient excavation. The optimum digging forces and resistances for the cable shovel excavator are modeled and used to predict optimum excavation performance.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

Anode vessels are often relined with refractory every one to two years and a typical reline time can take between 16-20 days. Modem refractory designs using dense, corrosion resistant brick applied directly to the vessel shell in the high wear areas around and above the tuyeres and at the slagline can yield a lining life of up to 4-5 years before a complete reline is necessary. Installation methods using brick delivery on roller conveyors through an endwall access port and complete anchoring of the brick to allow for lining self-support can take days off the installation time. It is possible, therefore, to reduce the refractory relining period by 50% and increase lining life by 100% compared to typical anode repair schemes. Cu2007

The evolution of open-pit mining has been rapid during the last two decades. The development of larger, more productive and efficient equipment has been one of the key factors in this open-pit advancement. Selection of the proper equipment and its correct usage is paramount to successful operation while maximizing return on investment. The quantity of material being moved prior to mining the saleable product is increasing at a significant rate. For example, at a southwestern copper mine more than two hundred million tons of over- burden have been removed prior to exposing an ore which contains less than 1% copper. A recent survey of twenty-three Western Hemisphere copper mines reveals the average strippingratio was 2.2:l with a range of 0.9-8.5:l. In the face of increased mineral demand, the resulting technological developments and rising overburden to ore ratios, many open-pit mines now use totally different concepts for the removal of ore and overburden. An increasing number of these concepts now being installed include wheel tractor scrapers as a major part of the material handling system for unconsolidated overburden removal. To say scrapers move only unconsolidated overburden is incorrect. On the contrary, ripped phosphate rock, copper ore, iron ore, and moderately consolidated overburden are also being moved by scrapers in various areas of the world. As reported in the Minerals Year- book, however, about one-half of the material moved in metal and non-metal mines is never drilled and blasted or broken by other means. We will, therefore, in this paper, concentrate on the role of wheel tractor scrapers in unconsolidated overburden; the area of greatest usage.

Sulphide ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually py-rite or pyrrhotite, or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another ; garnet, am phi-bole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William counties, located on the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodics is the famous " Great Gossan Lead" (13, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Grayson coun-

What has been billed as the underground drilling technology of the 1980's got a dramatic head start when Boliden engineers at Stekenjokk decided to go with all hydraulic drilling for primary ore production and mine development. This application represents a major first in meeting the needs of high productivity, better energy utilization, and an improved drilling environment. At Stekenjokk, engineers chose three Atlas Copco Boomer H132 two-boom electro-hydraulic drill rigs with the COP 1038 rock drills. An additional single-boom Boomer H131 was also selected with the COP 1038 HD for roof bolting functions.

"THE PROPERTY of Rexspar Uranium and Metals Mining Co. Limited is situated within 3 miles of Birch Island, British Columbia, a village on the C.N.R. main line 80 miles north of Kamloops. The claims extend up the south slope of the North Thompson River valley.Prospecting in the area dates back many years. Fluorite was reported in 1918, lead showings in 1926, and bog manganese in 1929. Diamond drilling in 1942-43 indicated more than a million tons of material containing 20 per cent fluorite and 15 per cent celestite in what is known as the 'fluorite zone'. Marketing and beneficiation difficulties have delayed further development of this deposit.Systematic checking of specimens and drill core by the B.C. Department of Mines and the Geological Survey of Canada revealed low radio-activity in the fluorite zone material. Subsequent prospecting with Geiger counters revealed zones of higher radioactivity a few hundred feet distant from the fluorite zone. The property at this stage came under the development direction of Technical Mine Consultants Limited, who undertook a program of diamond drilling. Of the several radioactive zones located, two have so far rewarded development and appear to constitute low-grade uranium orebodies. These are referred to as the ""Black Diamond"" or ""BD"", and the ""A"" zones -see section. Open-pit mining of the thick, dip-slope orebodies appears possible.General GeologyWalker (1) describes the local rocks as metamorphosed sediments cut by granodioritic intrusives and by greens tone. The mine site is situated south east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A detailed engineering design was undertaken for six irregularly shaped waste rock dumps at the site. The design was undertaken to ensure long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements for closure construction. The Watershed Erosion Prediction Program (WEPP) and SIBERIA landscape evolution modelling was undertaken for the landforms using regional and site-specific material characteristics to provide an indication of the maximum allowable slopes and corresponding slope lengths for long-term stability.The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps are considered likely to be subgrade banded iron formation (BIF) and chert, which is generally competent material. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. Geological records also indicate that the dolerite is logged as being heavily kaolinised in the geological logging, hence kaolinite is very likely to be present within the waste dumps on-site. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert).The final design configuration of the largest existing ‘unplanned’ waste rock stockpile is compared to a hypothetical continuous ten degree outer embankment alternative. This paper will present a brief description of the alternatives for closure of three waste dumps in close proximity to each other and how the detailed design based on site-specific materials and conditions compare to an alternative approach blankly assuming that most materials will be erosionally stable at less than ten degrees.CITATION:Kemp, A, Taylor, I?and Hancock,?G,?2014. This discussion will present a case study in developing solutions to a metropolitan quarryÆs public relations, legal, environmental, and productivity problems. It details an extensive and detailed project to address the blasting practice in a medium sized quarry that is surrounded by residential and industrial zones. The principle work was done over four months duration during the normal production season. It included detailed drilling and blasting audits for baseline information. In addition, geologic characterisation, seismic modeling, correction of deviations from best practices, and implementation and monitoring of precise electronic timing to provide dramatic solutions for the quarry. The quarry is in the near suburbs of a large metropolitan city. It is framed on two sides by residential municipalities and on two sides by industrial zones. At the start of the project, the quarry was in court as a result of the lawsuit by one of the neighboring towns that was suing to close the quarry. The lawsuit had progressed to the advanced stage where in the Judge had appointed an arbitrator to make the decision of continued operation. This arbitrator was to observe our progress and recommend to the Judge the disposition of the case.
