There are discussed the possibilities of using of flotation tailings of platinum-copper-nickel sulfide ores of the Norilsk region for the preparation of backfill mixture instead of a specially produced rock and binder materials to reduce the cost of stowing operations and impact on the environment. It is shown that due to the presence in the tailings of flotation up to 10% of sulfide sulphur, which reduces the strength of the fill materials, and more than 1 g/t PGM it is necessary the preliminary extraction of the sulfides in the product for further processing that give an opportunity to reduce the losses of valuable components. It is shown that by the flotation of the current tailings it is possible to extract 91% of sulfide sulphur, 60% of palladium and 30% platinum in 17% sulfide concentrate containing 2.1 g/t palladium, and to reduce the sulphur content in the tailings up to 0.7%. Due to the easy oxidation of pyrrhotite, there is recommended fractional delivery of the collector with a total consumption 200 g/t. There are discussed results of the flotation study with an additional collector of PGM (sodium diizobutyditiophosfinate), which one show the possibility to increase extraction of platinum on 45%, as well as extraction of sulphur and palladium. For the flotation of sulfides and PGM from the current tailings there is recommended a combination of collectors for primary flotation and only butyl xanthate using in control operations. The possibility of using sludge fraction of the current tailings as a component for the preparation of the combined cementing materials after exposure of sulfides is analyzed. It is shown that the efficiency of the flotation of sulfides from this fraction can be enhanced using selective flocculants. There are discussed the advantages of implementation of completely hydrophobic butadiene-styrene copolymer in comparison with partially hydrophobic polymers. There is discussed an efficiency of the mechanochemical treatment of old tailings in turbo mill and sulphuric acid to remove oxide films from the surface of pyrrhotite before its flotation. Due to the pretreatment operation there is achieved increasing of sulphur extraction and after the introduction to the flotation circuit three control operations there is produced the fill material with sulphur content 2.5%. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated flotation hydrodynamics to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate. Fluid velocity profile measurements were used to characterize the hydrodynamics within commercial phosphate flotation cells and laboratory flotation cells. The effects of agitation, aeration, and pH on coarse phosphate recovery were measured in the laboratory flotation cells and correlated with the hydrodynamics measurements. Test results revealed that the agitation energy and aeration level had a significant effect upon flotation response. By optimizing these two parameters, 92 pct of the phosphate was recovered in a rougher flotation concentrate grading 28 pct P2O5?

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

This is the detailed evaluation of the establishment and implementation of an ‘oil recycle plant’ located on site at Boggabri Mine NSW, (Australia); its production, its use and its value. Also discussed in detail is the quality of the raw material produced, and the process and initial application of this raw material generated as well as the analysis of such, as a component within bulk explosive as applied to the mining industry as compiled during analysis. Laboratory analysis prior to field testing is also discussed including independent external laboratory analysis as well as the environmental benefits and a business case for recycled oil in blasting. This paper includes technical details of the product including densities, velocity of detonation and other associated key performance indicators. The intention is to off-set the amount of Distillate (Diesel) utilised as a component of bulk explosives, with a raw recycled oil and thus reducing both the environmental carbon footprint as well as production costs with regard to introduced petrochemical production and utilisation; an oil that is an existing recourse of controlled waste not only difficult but expensive to otherwise dispose of, whilst keeping the entire process ‘on-site’. Though recycled oil in blasting is not an entirely original idea, the key feature of this paper is the ability to complete the entire process on-site.

As part of a larger research effort focused on ground control, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is currently evaluating the effectiveness of using stereological analysis for characterizing mine roof strata. Input for a stereological analysis of a rock mass is best obtained by scanning (imaging) the walls of clean drill holes using a video-imaging borescope or other video device. Two classes of features are being investigated: (1) Lithologic types that comprise the overall rock mass and (2) structural discontinuities (e.g., joints, foliation, bedding planes) within a given lithologic unit. In the former, the volume fraction of a given Lithologic unit in relation to the entire rock mass can be estimated. In the latter, the mean intercept length between adjacent structures and surface area density of the geologic structures can be estimated. Examples of sampling procedures and subsequent computations are presented for several situations using information collected from drill holes in roofs of underground mines. One such example is based on the trace of a cycloid curve used as a stereological sampling path on the cylindrical wall of a drill hole. Stereological measures, such as intercept length, volume fraction, and surface area density, are explained in the context of rock mass characterization.

INTRODUCTION IN previous publications of the writers4-7 it has been shown that vacuum extraction of steel can be carried as close to quantitative completion as desired provided the steel is in the austenitic state and sufficient time is allowed. For precise work, the method claims preference because the equipment for holding and heating the sample can be made simple, and because crucibles, boats, and other unnecessary materials can be eliminated and the blanks thus made very small. It is well known that the evolution rate of hydrogen is smaller just above the transformation than immediately below, as would be expected from the increase in solubility when passing into the gamma state. Many attempts have been made to obtain analyses by extraction just below the transition, using times of approximately 2 hr. While it is true that the rate of evolution drops nearly to zero under these conditions, it has repeatedly been shown that the process is incomplete since on raising the temperature into the austenitic range, evolution will be resumed, usually after a considerable induction period. The low-temperature evolution process appears to be useful in some cases for comparative tests where the residual error may be more or less constant between samples. For general use, however, there is no guarantee that the error caused by incomplete extraction is constant; hence, the more laborious but more reliable high-temperature process must be used. At high temperature, an original flash evolution, similar to that at lower temperature, is first observed. After not more than an hour, the flash subsides and evolution settles down to a regular first-order reaction rate for which the half-life* is usually of the order of a few hours for the 5/8-in. diam cylinder at 1050°C. The regular evolution may be followed for whatever period appears justified, after which the residual gas may be estimated as equal to that which was evolved in the last observed half-life period. The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. Plant based on the New Jersey refluxing process was installed at the Cockle Creek Works of Sulphide Corporation Pty. Ltd. to refine portion of the zinc output from the Imperial Smelting furnace.Refining of impure zinc is effected by distillation in two stages in vertical columns comprising a series of superimposed silicon carbide trays designed such that ascending zinc vapours and descending liquid metal are in intimate contact. In the first stage, portion of the zinc and its cadmium content are distilled from impure feed metal, condensed, and while still molten, fed to the second column in which zinc is boiled under controlled refluxing conditions to remove the cadmium content.The resultant zinc has a purity in excess of 99·995 per cent zinc.The availability of refined zinc has made possible the production of a number of zinc alloys for marketing in addition to the basic grades of zinc.

Discussion of the paper of C. R. Keyes, presented at the Chattanooga meeting, October, 190S, Bulletin No. 26, February, 1909, pp. 119 to 166. E. R. BUCKLEY, Flat River, Mo. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Some statements in the paper of Mr. Keyes relative to the nature and formation of the Ozark lead- and zinc-deposits seem to me erroneous and misleading, and I respectfully present the following criticisms, placing Mr. Keyes's original statements in quotations. Referring to the Ozark dome: (P. 127.) "It is a region that has been repeatedly upraised and planed off, until in the middle portion the oldest known' rocks only are exposed." Does he mean that the St. Francois mountains, which have always been considered as lying on the eastern flank of the Ozark dome, are the middle of the dome? Or does he mean that the Cambrian rocks of the generally-accepted middle are the oldest known rocks ? Certainly not the latter, and if the former, his idea of the middle of the dome is not in accord with that of others who are familiar with the region. (P. 138.) " . . . the ore-deposits are definitely associated with, or localized by, geologic structures of some kind that .produce in effect basins in which' the underground waters are impounded, or their flow retarded." This statement does not appear to be altogether consistent with the facts, since the ore- bodies of the Joplin district, as the rule, occur in those parts of the Mississippian formation which have a tendency to accel¬erate the flow of ground-water rather than retard it. I might name the open, breeciated ground near Joplin, Webb City, and Oronogo as especially noteworthy illustrations. The ore-bodies, everywhere, occur in positions where there must have been a free and copious circulation of dilute lead- and zinc-solutions in the presence of reducing constituents. Strip mining in Western Canada, though of considerable importance, is a fairly recent development for many of the operators in the district. Adding to the difficulty of unfamiliarity is the fact that a great deal of the stripping is done on pitching seams, for which the engineering and economic principles of setting the most advantageous strip ratio are not readily apparent. The novelty of the operation combined with the complexity of the principles involved can easily lead to misconceptions as to the determination of the economic ratio. Definition of Strip Ration There are two commonly accepted meanings of the term strip ratio: (1) The ratio of feet of overburden to be stripped per foot of coal recoverable. (2) The ratio of cubic yards of overburden per cubic yard or ton of coal. The first definition is inapplicable to pitching seams so, throughout this paper, strip ratio will be taken as the ratio of cubic yards of overburden to be removed per cubic yard of coal recoverable. Economic Ratio In the case of flat seams, the strip ratio is fixed by existing natural conditions, and the magnitude of this ratio determines whether stripping is economically feasible. With pitching seams, however, the strip ratio is a variable. On the outcrop, there is usually some coal which can be obtained with little or no stripping. As the work is carried down the pitch of the coal seam, the proportion of overburden continually increases until a point is reached where it is no longer economical to continue the operation. The question immediately arises as to the location of this point, and this resolves into the problem of determining the most favourable strip ratio, or, to use the accepted term, the economic ratio.

The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. Low content of TiO2 and high impurities content of Ca and Mg are the shortcomings of domestic ilmenite. To meet the requirements of the material in the titania produced by chlorination process and titanium sponge industry, enrichment of ilmenite is necessary. In the process of enriching ilmenite, high temperature and reductive condition were beneficial to the formation of anosovite, but the high content of magnesium oxide which was solid soluble in anosovite baffled the following separation. So the effects of pre-oxidation and reductive conditions including reduction temperature, reduction time and hydrogen concentration on the phase composition and metallization rate were studied. The characteristics of reduction samples were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and optical microscope. Results have shown that the reduction product is mainly composed of Fe, Fe(Mg)TiO3 and TiO2 at 1123K, its metallization rate is about 65%,magnesium exists in Fe(Mg)TiO3.

Many analysts have had difficulty in obtaining accurate and consistent determinations of the volatile matter in low-temperature coke when the usual standard method for coal was followed. The tendency is toward too-high results, due to mechanical losses which are extremely difficult to avoid or control. With cokes there also may be an error due to excessive oxidation of the fixed carbon. Much of the earlier experimental work on the volatile-matter determination in coal, such as that of Parr,5 Fieldner and Davis,6 and others, 7 has been on the effect of time, temperatures, shape and size of crucibles, method of applying heat, and type of furnace, all of which data has evolved the present A.S. T. M.8 standard method for volatile matter in coal and coke. It is not the purpose of this investigation to deal directly with the above phases of the procedure, but rather to study some of the factors affecting she results in those types of fuel which give erroneous results due to mechanical losses.

The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

"The paper will present the methods of visual observation and recording of movement paths of coal grains of different physical properties in the paramagnetic liquid. The paths were recorded with a video camera in the working chamber by means of a specially constructed device, acting as a periscope, which were then transformed into digital images.Experimental movement paths were confronted to the paths obtained in a theoretical way by means of solving differential equations of movement. The outlet level of a grain of the same physical properties from the separator is a random variable with normal distribution which modal value is equal to the outlet level of a spherical grain, calculated from the solution of grain movement equations. At these assumptions it is possible to calculate the height of the passage from the separator working chamber to separate a given product with a given separation accuracy, measured by a probable error and to determine separation conditions."

Benchmarking of mining operations has been in vogue for a number of years: it seems teams are forever flying around the world to try to understand what other operations are doing. However, unless a benchmarking exercise involves data gathering at a fundamental level and a rigorous analysis process is applied, the trip will be nothing more than industrial tourism. When benchmarking is performed thoroughly, the range of comparisons that can be made is extensive and informative, and need not be restricted to sites with similar conditions and equipment fleets. This paper describes the detailed and rigorous process for benchmarking used throughout AMC benchmarking studies. The paper demonstrates how, through drilling down to the underlying drivers, the often heard cry of æyou canÆt compare us, weÆre differentÆ can be overcome. Included in the discussion are a number of significant issues that have been identified during AMC benchmarking studies. The paper then considers the types of opportunities that have been identified and the potential for improvement. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications for planning, measuring and management of operational performance.

The critical phenomena have been studied during the past century but our knowledge of the critical temperatures and pressures of complex hydrocarbon mixtures still is very limited. The critical temperatures and pressures of pure substances have been examined in large num-bers,20 and in great detail.11,17 No experimental determinations of the critical phenomena have been reported on such complex hydrocarbon systems as a reservoir fluid. The critical temperature is defined by Taylor18 as follows: "there is some temperature for each gas above which the gas cannot be liquefied. This temperature is called the critical temperature." The critical pres-sure of a pure substance is the vapor pressure at the critical temperature. It should be noted that these definitions refer to a given substance in the pure state and do not mean that the pure substance cannot be liquefied in the presence of a second constituent. The normal procedure for obtaining the critical temperature of a substance is to heat it in a glass tube 1,20 under pressure until the meniscus between the liquid and vapor phase disappears, although other methods, especially for mixtures, have been used. 11,14 However, when considering oil and gas reservoirs, it is more enlightening to consider a critical phe-nomenon that occurs when a mixture of oil and gas are compressed at a reservoir temperature until the meniscus disappears because the two phases become equal in composition. This conception, along with erroneous applications of the definition of the critical phenomena of a pure substance to that pure substance when it is part of a complex mixture, has caused confusion even among persons familiar with the classical theories.

The Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems and Minerals, located in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington DC, opened in September, nine years after initial fundraising efforts were begun. The 1,858-m2 (20,000-sq ft), $16-million hall was mostly funded by private groups and individuals, including $1.7 million from 43 National Mining Associa¬tion (NMA) member companies. Companies that contributed more than $100,000 included Cyprus Amax, Phelps Dodge, Asarco, Homestake Mining, BHP, Caterpillar, Cleveland Cliffs, Exxon Coal and Minerals, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining and Peabody Holdings. The mining industry's contributions funded a walk-through Mine Gallery. It. features diora¬mas of four mines, as well as numerous specimens associated with the mines. The Mine Gal¬lery demonstrates to the public the importance of mining. The hall was named in honor of Hooker. She contributed $5 million in cash plus the Hooker Yellow Starburst Diamonds to the project. The hall is touted by the Smithsonian as the "most comprehensive earth science complex of its kind." It consists of seven galleries, each devoted to different aspects of gems, minerals and rocks. In addition to the Mine Gal¬lery, the hall contains a collection of gemstones and jewelry pieces, an extensive collection of minerals, a gallery devoted to plate tectonics and a gallery devoted to the moon, meteorites and the solar system. The new hall is a complete makeover of the old and outdated Geology Hall. It was built in the 1960s and finally closed to the public in 1995.

ON May 5, the Washington, D. C., Section, A.I.M.E., devoted its meeting to the many-sided and perplexing question of mineral stock-piling for peace. Opening the symposium, Harry J. Wolf, of the War Production Board, outlined the problem under six heads: (1) Technical. Mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical importance of specified materials, emergencies that might arise, relative scarcity, and critical value of stock piles during emergencies. (2) Economic. Cost to Government, influence of Government stocks on commercial relationships and markets, effect of availability of items as a con¬structive influence on industry, Administration policies now and during postwar period. (3) Legislative. Need for immediate legislative action, need for legislation on postwar conditions as well as on current requirements, a constructive basic policy to prevent political manipulation. (4) Military. Consideration of re¬quirements and supplies bearing on national safety and needed for manufacture of equipment, and adequate reserves of scarce materials for research or experimentation by military agencies. (5) International. Interests of the United Nations in contradistinction to those of the United States; effects of nonisolation policy on nature, location, and administration of stock piles. (6) Negative stock-piling. Question of United Nations' legislation to prevent stock-piling by Axis nations after the war and who shall purchase stock-pile materials and during what periods.
