Over 90% of the Romania's lignite reserve is located in the region of Oltenia, which is why this area is given special attention in the country's coal resources. Because the lignite deposit of Oltenia is comprised of 1-8 exploitable coal layers, their capitalizing calls for urgent arrangements to ensure rational exploitation under conditions of total safety, minimum losses and efficiency. The technology used the coal pits of North-Western Oltenia is the technology of excavation, transport and dumping in a continuous flow by using the complexes of excavation, transport and high-capacity dumping. The theme of this paper is of particular importance because the rhythmic operation in complete safety, is necessary both for sizing and keeping within the bounds of acceptable values, throughout the process of excavation of the geometric elements of the coal faces, marked by: the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms. Geometric dimensions of the benches of the open pits, the height of benches, slope angle and width of berms shall be calculated and shall be based on: the massif structure that forms the benches; physical-mechanical characteristics of rocks from the bench; working conditions, characterized mainly by mining and extraction methods applied; functional parameters of the mechanical equipment used to perform various operations on the coal face etc. For this study it was necessary a broad field for task tracking, measurement, research and design elements of the coal face, for land survey and a desk activity by: processing of topographic data, laboratory analyses on physical and mechanical properties of rocks and numerous specialized studies. In the final part, we bring some contributions to elucidating the issues of special importance for the lignite coal pits of Oltenia, coming up with data, graphics, formulas, solutions and concrete dimensioning of coal faces in terms of using technology in a continuous flow.

On July 1, 1999, most domestic metal mines will have to report releases of toxic chemicals into the environment for the first time as required by SARA Title 313. Some of these reportable releases will appear huge in relation to reports by other industries. The reasons for the potentially large reportable releases, special considerations for mining operations, and strategies for dealing with the reports are described. Data composited from experience with several mining companies is presented in the context of a typical gold mine.

A fast high-temperature carburizing process integrated with materials design and optimization via a systems design approach was developed to significantly reduce process cycle time. Process experiments were focused on boost cycles to obtain a robust boost process and investigate surface reaction kinetics, primary carbide formation and dissolution. Weight gain and microhardness were measured, all showing evidence of non-monotonic time evolution for longer boost times at higher temperatures. Optical and electron microscopy and other techniques have been used to identify possible carbides, their location and types. These results assist the picking of first boost time with least variation rate in terms of content of case carbon and carbides, dissolvable in subsequent diffuse if any. The results also provide critical information to properly formulate surface reaction kinetics and diffusion and formation kinetics of carbides modeled using DICTRA. Some aspects of the policies developed by Saskatchewan with respect to the provincial potash industry are discussed. The provincial potash policy was developed initially to deal with problems associated with an excess supply and consisted of output restrictions and floor prices. Changing market conditions led to a situation of rapidly increasing prices and revenues for the potash producers, and the nature of the policy problem switched from one of stabilizing the industry to one of levying increased taxes to enable the government to capture a portion of the revenues. The first part of the paper explains why a provincial potash policy was developed, the problems it attempted to deal with and how. The second part is an attempt to examine, from a public policy point of view, the impact of these policies on the potash industry.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents two new options for hydrocyclone control. Volume split control using a control valve in the overflow is applied for the stabilization of separation results at changing feed conditions. Controlled water injection to the conical part of the cyclone leads to the reduction of fine particles in the underflow. Hydrocyclone monitoring in both cases is performed by optical sensors that indicate the spray angle of the underflow. Applications in mineral processing for desliming, classification in closed-circuit grinding, and dewatering are demonstrated.

"Introduction The Luscar company, Forestburg Collieries Ltd., operates the Diplomat Mine located 14 km south of Forestburg, Alberta. Production is now at a declining rate from the 1 million tonnes achieved in 1978 as the reserves are being depleted. Three pits are operated at this prairie strip mine utilizing draglines and stripping shovels to uncover the coal. The coal is hauled to a tipple on site for shipment by rail or highway vehicles or is hauled directly to the adjacent Battle River Generating Station. Geology The mine is currently extracting the Battle River seam on the north side of the Battle River. This is the lower-most seam in the Horseshoe Canyon Formation and is the only one present in the area, the upper seams having been eroded by glaciation. The seam lies generally flat and varies from 2.0 to 5.0 metres thick. It lies under glacial till overburden varying in depth from 5.0 to 12.0 metres. The mineable coal extends from the side of the Battle River valley where it outcrops, to approximately 2.5 kilometres to the north. The mine is spread out over a distance of 8.0 kilometres in an east-west direction. Reserves and Coal Quality After over 30 years of mining at Diplomat, there are now less than 1 million tonnes of mineable reserves remaining on the property. With the commencement of coal production from the Paintearth Mine in 1981, supply to the Battle River Generating Station, formerly Diplomat's biggest customer, is being transferred to Paintearth. Rail shipments and domestic supply will continue until reserves are depleted. The coal has the following specifications:"

A theoretical model for gas outbursts in underground coal mines is as follows. An outburst is the structural failure ofcoal due to excess stress resulting from body forces caused by gas pressure gradients. These body forces influence the stability of a mine face in the same manner that gravitational body forces affect the stability of the roof of a mine. The magnitude ofthese body forces can be appreciated when it is realized that for an average density coal, the gravitational body force is equal in magnitude to the force from a gas flow with a pressure gradient of 14 kPa m-I. Gas pressure gradients and the resultant stresses within a seam can be calculated with numerical methods. Thus, providing the necessary parameters can be measured or estimated, in principle the theory can be applied to compare the outburst risk of various mining arrangements.

The use of sulfur combined with either sand or waste copper tailings was investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a substitute for a good graded aggregate in asphalt paving materials. The research was part of a utilization program to develop meaningful uses for a projected oversupply of sulfur. Many sections of the country lack good aggregate for paving but do have available sources of sands and sulfur. The development of paving mixtures of desert sands or tailings with sulfur and asphalt was accomplished in the laboratory and tested by laying small paving test sections. Three types of material were studied for use with the sulfur and asphalt. They were (1) a concrete sand similar in gradation to river or beach sands, (2) desert blow sand, and (3) waste copper tailings. Desert blow sand and waste copper tailings are much finer than concrete sand. Mix designs were established for the three types of materials, sulfur, and asphalt used in the paving materials. The best mix designs were as follows, in weight-percent: 80.5 concrete sand, 13.5 sulfur, and 6 asphalt; and 77 either blow sand or tailings, 17 sulfur, and 6 asphalt. Small-scale testing showed that these mixtures were suitable paving materials but would require specialized equipment for transporting and laying. The chemical modification of sulfur to obtain properties that would allow placement of these materials with normal asphalt paving equipment was studied. Results indicate that reacting sulfur with dicyclopentadiene before adding it to the paving mixture was effective in modifying the sand-sulfur-asphalt paving so it could be placed and rolled with conventional equipment.

The past 15 years have seen rapid advances in the metallurgy of materials for drill machinery and bits, but rock drilling itself continues to be largely an art. Jet piercing, roller bit rotary drilling, and rotary percussion are all promising new techniques, but the percussion rock drill, still used for 90 pct of the blastholes in U. S. hard-rock mining, has under- gone no major modification since pneumatic machines were first used successfully in the 1860's. This singular lack of progress stems directly from ignorance of the nature of impact failure of rock and the fundamentals of rock penetration in general. For nearly three-quarters of a century, mining engineers did not know what went on at the bottom of a drillhole.

A report on location, sampling, assays, mineral examination, amenability leach tests, and evaluation of certain mine dumps in Mohave County, Arizona. Extractions of greater than 30 percent of the gold and silver were achieved during simulated heap leaching of selected mine dump material. Consumption of reagents was relatively low and results suggest leaching of prepared heaps is technically viable and could be economically attractive.

Investigations by the Federal Bureau of Mines indicate that hafnium and zirconium compounds of acceptable purity can be extracted from Nigerian zircon concentrates. Chlorination and caustic soda fusion techniques were used to extract 85 to 95 percent of the valuable metals from the concentrate. The extracted hafnium and zirconium compounds were purified by recrystallization of the oxychlorides or by formation of complex salts during chlorination. The zirconium-hafnium product of the recrystallization method contained 15 parts per million of uranium, and the product of the salt-complex method contained less than 10 parts per million of uranium. The hafnium was separated from zirconium by solvent extraction methods. A zirconium product containing 0.3 percent hafnium and a hafnium product containing 4 percent zirconium were obtained. At the request of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), work was started to develop techniques for processing Nigerian zircon concentrates in commercial installations presently engaged in producing zirconium and hafnium metals from ores. The Nigerian zircon has a high hafnium content, but the presence of uranium and thorium is a problem not normally encountered in processing zircon concentrates.

Within 22 months of commencing decline development, the Prominent Hill Ankata Underground Project achieved its full production rate of 1.2 Mt/a.In 2010 construction of the Ankata Underground Project was approved. Decline development commenced in November 2010 and the turnout for the first sublevel was reached by August 2011. The first stoping ore was produced in the first quarter of 2012 and production was successfully ramped up to full production during the third quarter of 2012.Diamond drilling commenced in October 2011 and was conducted concurrently with the underground development. This presented challenges as mining and production targets had to be balanced with underground exploration activities. To achieve production on schedule, without adversely affecting the diamond drilling program and future development, meticulous and adaptive planning techniques were required. This included involvement from engineers, geologists, underground operators and underground diamond drillers.The granularity of these planning techniques allowed the management and prioritisation of development and diamond drilling down to an almost hourly basis. A constant flow of information from drill assay results was fed back into the planning systems. This resulted in a constantly evolving mine plan as the orebody was further refined. High priority areas were identified and targeted to allow continued development and a successful rapid ramp up to full production.CITATION:Sandery, L and Light, S, 2014. "The study of the properties of mineral processing suspensions is important in understanding how a circuit might behave. As soon as the predominantly dry ore enters a wet milling stage the ore properties undergo changes as a ‘slurry’ is created. Slurries can be classified in terms of their physical properties (particle density, solids concentration, particle size and size distribution, particle shape), and their flow properties such as rheology. Slurry flow regimes are classified into true homogeneous, pseudo homogeneous, heterogeneous and fully segregated, and only true homogeneous and pseudo homogeneous suspensions can be characterized by their flow structure. A class of the heterogeneous regime are the so-called dense phase or settling slurries - those which result in a clear water surface on standing, although they may approach a pseudo homogeneous state if suspended for a sufficient period of time. They are usually extremely difficult to characterize by their rheological properties alone and the rheological characterization of these slurries has always posed a problem, especially at higher concentrations. Previous rheological studies have focused on the individual concentrator units dealing with milling, classification, pumping, flotation, fine grinding, thickening.In this work an attempt was made to characterize two ore types (copper and a Platreef platinum ore) using a custom built Paterson and Cooke tube rheometer, at concentrations up to 43% by volume. After applying a turbulence correction, results showed Bingham plastic behavior. A conventional vane rheometer was then used to compare the rheological behavior of platinum concentrator streams. A size criteria was used to identify any rheologically dominant streams."

IN the USSR considerable technical improvements have been made in hydraulic methods of mining coal. In New Zealand coal mining by these methods is still comparatively crude. The Russian techniques are closely studied in New Zealand, and this description is based mainly on translations of technical articles. Fundamentally the methods in both countries are the same-chief developments in the USSR are the use of high pressure water jets, capable of winning all but the hardest coal without prior blasting, and hydraulic pipeline transportation where the gradient is unsuitable for flume transport.

For electric utilities serving the aluminum smelter industry in the United States, sulfur oxide (SOx) abatement legislation could bring about increases in the costs of generating electricity. This paper documents the method and assumptions used in estimating these increases, and the contains the results of the estimation. 1.2 SMELTER INFORMATION The smelters used in this study were identified by the Bureau of Mines (BOM) and are listed in Table 1.1. Also included in Table 1.1 are the electric utilities that serve these smelters. Compliance costs were estimated for these utilities. Some of the utilities are unique in the way that the information is handled or in the way the utility is operated; these are discussed below. 1.2.1 Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops, Data for Big Rivers and Associated Co-ops were gathered by George Mason University (GMU) students for BON and are included in this study.

INTRODUCTION The Harrison Western Corporation, a leading Denver based mine contracting and engineering concern, is presently engaged in sinking two 1,006 m (3,300 ft) shafts for the Phillips Uranium Corporation at their Nose Rock Project, approximately 13 miles northeast of the small community of Crownpoint in McKinley County, New Mexico. The Nose Rock Project is the first attempt by the Phillips Uranium Corporation to tap the deep uranium reserves in what has become known as the Grants Mineral Belt. (See Figure 1) Project Description Phillips Uranium Corporation's plan for the large 2700 metric ton per day (2950 tons/day) mining facility calls for a series of deep access and ventilation shafts ranging from 4.27 m (14 ft) to 5.49 m (18 ft) in diameter to approximate depths of 1,006 m (3,300 ft). The initial pair of shafts consists of one production shaft and one ventilation shaft separated by a distance of 91 m (300 ft). The interbedded layers of sedimentary sandstones and shales to be penetrated by the shafts contain several major water producing aquifers, the deepest being the mineralized zone called the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation.

The effects of slag composition, additive agents, and heat treatment conditions on the perovskite (CaO ? TiO2) crystal morphology, the precipitation behavior, the crystal growth and the volume fraction (VF) in the Ti-bearing blast furnace slags were investigated. The morphology of perovskite is dispersed dendriform in molten slags. The crystal growth mechanism of the remelting of fine dendrites and the coarsening of larger grains exists throughout the solidification of molten slags. With the temperature decrease, the VF was increased and Perovskite transformed from fine dendrites to coarsening ones or equiaxed grains. The lower cooling rate can increase the VF and coarsen the grain obviously, while higher cooling rate will decrease the VF and reduce the average equivalent diameter (AED) of Perovskite. When .increasing the content of CaO and Fe20}, the VF can increase obviosly. However, high basicity will give rise to the increasing of viscosity of slag, which result in the reducing of the AED. The experimental results showed that additive CaF2 and MnO can efficiently decreased the viscosity of the slags, and obviously improved the morphology of perovskite and promote growth.
