With over 25 years of experience in dealing with the industry, I am well inGormed and educated concerning the problems that occur in Blast Hole Drilling. After continues interaction with the Drill & Blast Superintendents, Drillers, Purchasing Agents, Mechanics, and others in the field, a basic understanding was developed as to the origins of the main problems that the industry f&s with their drillings programs.

The detailed work done by Stillwell and Edwards on the occurrence of cobaltite and safilorite-Iollingite at the South Mine, followed by its presentation as a paper to the Institute, calls for, a few notes on its occurrence elsewhere in the Broken Hill field. No massive cobaltite similar to that in the South Mine veinlet is known except from the Consols Mine (as mentioned in the paper). Fine grained cobaltite has, however, been found in low-grade ore from the North Mine. Microscopic grains occur in a mineralized green feldspar pegmatite. The feldspar has been replaced in part by graphite, and the cobaltite occurs in association with the graphite. In its hardness, pinkish-white colour, and resistance to the standard etchingqeagents it is similar to the South Mine cobaltite; it is etched by acid permanganate solution. An interesting feature of this occurrence is the way in- which some of the minerals (notably galena) have forced apart the graphite lamellae in crystallizing, forming lenses enclosed by the curved cleavage surlaces 0;[ the graphite.StillwelI and Edwards cite a note by G. Smitht for the statement that "cobaltite has been recorded from the Australian Broken Hill Consols Lode in the vicinity of the rich silver deposits, though not in contact with them."Smith, however, is here referring to the oxidized zone. Elsewhere in the same article he states "... a deposit of cobaltite in a very much altered condition was found. This was impregnated with silver, and assayed as high as 3,000 ounces," Of the cobaltite in the unoxidized zone, Smith simply states that it became rarer with depth.Cobaltite has also been recognized by Mr. H. F. Whitworth, M.SC., Curator of the Mining Museum, Sydney, in specimens from Burt's Copper Mine eight miles south of Broken Hill.

ALTHOUGH the process to which I refer in this paper has been in successful operation for nearly five years, during which time it has been introduced, superseding all other processes having in view the same end, in almost every lead refinery in the country, no description of it, giving economical data, has ever appeared in print, nor has the process been known in its details to any considerable number of engineers beside those conducting it at their works. A discussion of this subject at the present time becomes especially interesting in view of a late publication in the Prussian ministerial organ for Mining and Metallurgy, by Dr. Wedding, in which the method of treating the zinc-silver-lead alloy by distillation, as finally settled upon at Tarnowitz, is very minutely and fully described. It is the more interesting, because in that article reference is made to the American method in an unfavorable light, while, at the same time, it is clear from the article itself, that the most important details of the process, besides the one that it is conducted in black-lead retorts, were not at all understood. In publishing herewith the details of our American method, one of my objects is to invite comparisons between our simple and direct process and the elaborate one at Tarnowitz. In extracting the silver from work-lead by means of zinc, it is always the intention, in this country, to obtain a zinc-crust so rich in silver that the rich lead resulting from subsequent distillation

When plants decay in a peat bog the woody parts form a brown pasty mass, or peat muck, largely soluble in alkalis. This brown matter has been termed "ulmin." The same material, but commonly black in color, is found in coal, and there is evidence of the similarity between the material forming the main bulk of the coal and the bulk of the more recently decayed material in peat bogs. The more recent or low-rank coals, such as lignite, little removed from the peat stage, contain notable percentages of alkali-soluble ulmins, but the percentage decreases with increased degree of coalification and is negligible in bituminous or higher rank coals. The determination of the alkali-soluble ulmins in any coal gives, therefore, an indication of its degree of coalification or rank. Coals which contain few or no ulmins soluble in alkalis do contain ulmins which can be rendered soluble by oxidation. The higher the rank of the coal, the more difficult it is to oxidize the insoluble ulmins and make them soluble. High-rank coals can be differentiated by oxidation tests on the insoluble ulmins; but low-rank coals can be characterized by both their soluble and insoluble ulmins. This paper deals with the determination and significance of the alkali-soluble ulmins present as such in the coal. The chemical nature and composition of ulmins are not discussed. Review of Literature The history of the study of ulmin is well given by Stopes and Wheeler.' The action of potash on coal has long been known, as Braconnot in 1819 distinguished between lignites and bituminous coals by stating that the former gave colored solutions with potash. Later the intensity of color was used to give a fuller differentiation. Hoffman2 distinguished between lignites and lignitic coals by the darker color given by the

The history of labor relations in the coal industry of the United States is a study of its collective bargaining. This study of collective bargaining is largely the history of the United Mine Workers of America and its contractual relations with the various coal mining employers who have produced this country's coal over the years under a free enterprise system. There have been other unions in the picture from time to time and some coal miners have mined coal without representation by any union. Even today some 25% of the nation's coal is produced outside of the collective bargaining relationship with the UMWA. However, more than 100,000 coal mine wage employees - well over 75% of the total in the industry - are covered by labor agreements negotiated for them by the UMWA. Practically all of these work in bituminous mines.

The measurement of residual stress fields using X-ray diffraction techniques requires the removal of successive layers of material from the specimen. In the process of removing these layers, the underlying residual stress field is altered; hence, if the original stress field is desired, corrections must be made to the measured stresses. Although these corrections already exist for a number of cases, an alternate procedure is outlined herein whereby the corrections are presented in series form. This form is numerically more convenient within certain ranges of correction depths and in its simplicity gives additional insight into the factors affecting the corrections. It, further, readily permits determining the proper slice depth to remove and the effect on the correction of both specimen thickness and magnitude and form of the measured residual stress itself. ONE of the techniques currently being used to determine residual stress fields is X-ray diffraction. Since X-rays are diffracted essentially from the layers of atoms near the surface of the specimen, of the order of 0.0001 to 0.001 in. depending on conditions, the method can only determine stresses* in this very thin surface region. Therefore, if the residual stress field at some depth into the specimen is required it is necessary to remove successive layers of material taking measurements after each cut. In the process of removing a thin surface layer of stressed material, however, the over-all equilibrium of a cross section of the specimen is disturbed with the result that the internal residual stress which existed before the slice of material was removed is altered. This alteration of stress occurs after each slice and its effect is cumulative. Thus, if the original stress distribution is desired, corrections must be applied to the measured stresses. These corrections can be found by satisfying equilibrium on each new cross section. These corrections have been derived in detail for a number of cases, e.g., cylinders, bars, plates,' and also are given in Appendix VI of Ref. 2. In each of the above cases the correction terms require the evaluation of definite integrals of the measured residual stress distribution. In general, this is indeed the way one would proceed with the corrections. There are a number of instances, however, where the integrals can be replaced by a series form of correction which is considerably more convenient numerically and, also, gives added insight into the factors which influence the corrections. Such a form of the correction is particularly useful, for example, if one is interested in designing a test such that stress corrections will be small. Also, the question of what depth of slice to use in relation to both specimen thickness and residual stress distribution itself must invariably be answered. Questions of this type can be readily answered using a series form of correction. In addition, if the correct residual stress distribution is needed only for limited depths into the specimen the series correction provides numerical results which are equivalent to the integral correction. I) DERIVATION OF THE SERIES CORRECTION The problem to be considered here is that of a bar or plate,* i.e., either one or two dimensions of the specimen is large compared with the third. Also, the residual stress distributions considered depend only on z, see Fig. 1. In view of this it can be shown' that a stress correction, based on simple beam theory, satisfies all conditions of "elasticity theory" and hence is the correct (and only) solution. The integral form of the correction (this assumes that the measured residual stress is a piecewise continuous function) as given in Ref. 1 is:

IT HAS been known for centuries that iron and steel could be hardened by cold hammering and that the metal could be restored to the normal condition by heating to a red heat and cooling either rapidly or slowly with nearly pure iron and slowly with steels containing considerable carbon. The art of tempering steels is also very old. When a medium- or high-carbon steel is quenched from a cherry-red heat, the hardness is increased; this hardness can be reduced by heating to various temperatures below the lower thermal critical point, which is near 700° C. The present paper will not consider these old and well-known changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range but will confine itself to the more unusual changes, some of which have been studied recently. Stromeyer,1 for example, in 1886, reports that both working steel and heat treatment of steel in the blue-heat range are highly injurious. Recently, however, some metallurgists believe that the straightening of warped steel forgings at a blue heat produces a beneficial effect on the metal.2 The Engineering Division of the National Research Council has constituted a committee on Physical Changes -in Iron and Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range, which has the following personnel: R. With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. The gold is hosted by discrete quartz veins. While it is true that limited discoveries were made at Hemlo more than 30 years ago, and this style of mineralization is present elsewhere, recent

Y.-That this paper deals with a real problem is illustrated by a statement made to the speaker a few months ago by the manager of a silver-lead property: "Our ore contains 60 per cent. silica on which the smelters are penalizing us heavily, and they are not able to take all our stuff even then. We have simply got to find some method other than smelting for getting the silver and lead out of our ores. We have had experts down here and have investigated flotation, leaching and volatilization, of which processes the latter is by far the most promising. We are continuing investigation." I was somewhat concerned in certain chloride volatilization experiments which we carried on in Denver in 1903, working on a carload of ore from Butte. Now being connected with the Cottrell process, by which method the fumes will undoubtedly he recovered if they solve the volatilization problem, I have looked into the matter again, and believe it can be developed into a commercial process. On a laboratory scale, working With silver-lead ores, experimenters have obtained a volatilization of over 90 per cent. of the total values in 30 to 60 min, on quantities of 1 to 5 lb., using a roasting dish and a muffle. That looks very good, and would be entirely commercial. On attempting to duplicate these results in a reverberatory furnace, they found that it is more likely to take 8 hr. firing to yield 75 per cent. extraction, which is not commercial at all, as it requires too much time, labor, and fuel, and the whole process is too slow. Of course it can be done, because we have done it in the laboratory.

Feldspars, the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, occur in numerous forms and mixtures. The feldspars of commercial significance are found in widely distributed pegmatites as large crystals usually free of iron- bearing impurities and thus suitable for hand-cobbing, and also in larger bodies where the ore contains various types of feldspar inter- mingled with quartz and relatively free of iron- bearing impurities, or at least readily unlocked from impurities present at relatively coarse mesh. The latter type of ore includes some pegmatites, and the ''alaskite" bodies so common in the Spruce Pine district of North Carolina. On the west coast of the U.S. and in Oklahoma there is-r has been--commercial recovery of natural feldspathic sand as a source of alumina in glass and ceramics. "Aplite" in commercial terminology is a light-colored igneous rock with a granitic composition and a fine sugary texture, often banded with readily removable iron impurities. Two areas in Virginia produce aplite for the glass industry: one located in the vicinity of Piney River, Amherst County, and the other near Montpelier in Hanover County. According to Deer et al. (1966) the word feldspar derives from the Swedish feldt or falt (field) and "spath:" chunks of rock appearing in tilled ground overlying granite. Castle and Gillson (1960) indicate a Germanic origin, citing "spat," which is said to refer to any transparent or translucent material which is readily cleavable. The term "spar" has in the past been applied to minerals other than feld- spar, such as barite, calcite, and fluorite. It is correct to call the latter "fluorspar." There is a true barium feldspar, but it is rare and of no present economic importance. What is recognized as feldspar or "spar" by present producers and consumers consists of three silicate minerals which, if pure, would have the formu- las KAISi,O, (microcline or orthoclase), NaAlSi,O, (albite), and CaAl,Si,O, (anorthite). These are almost never found in pure form in nature, but occur together in great abundance in a three-component system. A considerable number of different combined ratios of these three exists, with the exception that isomorphism between potassium spar and calcium spar is very limited. User specifications for feldspar products are largely built around the prevalent naturally occurring ratios. Pas- sages following will refer to "K-spar," "Na- spar," or "Ca-spar." Nomenclature and Descriptive Terms Relating to both the mineralogy and the economics of feldspar are certain terms whose coverage it is useful to specify. Commercially, aplite is a feldspathic rock mined and beneficiated in two locations in Virginia, in which both titanium and feldspar minerals are present-the latter now being the major, if not the only, economic product. Technically, the term aplite when applied to this rock is of questionable accuracy. But, in light of accepted commercial usage, the term will be here used to designate it. Regarding the Virginia rock, Ross (1941) is cited.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested. Given the relatively low-grade of gold mineralisation at Macraes, the consideration of tungsten as a supplementary co-product provides an exciting opportunity.CITATION:Moore, J and Doyle, S, 2015. The accident experience of the California petroleum industry for 1927 was characterized by a decrease it .the number of fatalities. The year closed with a total of 41 fatal accidents, as compared with a total of 54 for the preceding year. 3 In percentage, the figure for 1927 represents a decrease of 24 per cent from that of 1926 and evidences the promising results of organized safety work, in which the industry in California has taken an absorbing interest. The percentage of decrease for 1927 is the largest recorded in any one year since the compilation of the fatality record in the California petroleum industry was begun. Although good progress has been made during the past few years, much remains to be done to reduce still further the human and economic waste caused by accidents. This review is intended to show the employee, as well as the employer, the proximate and contributing cause of accidents. To increase the value of the report, preventive measures in various instances are suggested, on the theory that accidents of a similar nature will occur unless remedial action in taken to remove the cause.

THE present status of the theory of comminution is extremely unsatisfactory. The amount of various ores and rock products crushed and ground annually approaches the staggering sum of perhaps one half billion tons. Yet the basic concepts underlying an operation of such magnitude are unknown, and actual knowledge of what takes place in comminution is almost entirely empirical. The responsibility for this situation cannot be charged to apathy or lack of appreciation of the importance of the problem. Many attempts have been made to evolve a workable hypothesis, but none has been completely successful. General Considerations In order to break rock, it must be subjected to a stress which strains the rock beyond its critical breaking point. The stress imparts energy to the rock, most of which is released in the form of heat when the stress and resulting strain are removed. If the strain induced exceeds the critical strain, the energy is released by breaking; if the induced strain does not reach the critical point, the energy is released with removal of the stress as energy of resilience. Rock is a brittle material and it is assumed that it breaks approximately at its yield point, so that no permanent deformation results from strains below the critical. When rock is broken the total energy input is accounted for by the heat liberated, and by the surface energy of the new surface produced. A small and probably negligible amount is released as noise. Rock is commonly broken under compression and the applied stress is ordinarily compressive. However, for breakage to occur, it is only necessary that the induced strain exceed the critical value, and this strain may represent the resultant of compressive, shearing, and tensile forces. The stress-strain diagram of rocks under compression, and the modulus of elasticity as determined therefrom, should be fundamental considerations in the development of any theories of rock breakage. Crushing in jaw or gyratory crushers results primarily from a squeezing action, and reduction in a hammer mill is the result of impact. The action in rod and ball mills is a combination of impacting, squeezing, and wearing away by attrition, or rubbing. In ordinary crushing and grinding, the forces are applied at protruding points and are not distributed evenly throughout the rock. This is one of the features of comminution which theoretical considerations have not covered adequately. Another feature is the effect of impact velocities, which may greatly influence the total energy required for breakage. Impact velocities may vary from 1 or 2 fps in crushers to 10 or 20 fps for ball mills, and as high as 100 or more for hammer mills. However, according to the findings of geophysicists, the velocity of sound and of compression waves in stone is many times greater; the primary longitudinal compression waves travel at perhaps 15,000 fps, and the secondary transverse waves, which may reach the surface and cause cracks to form thereon, travel at perhaps 5000 fps. When a crack tip forms, the total surrounding stresses are concentrated in this tip, which rapidly extends throughout the rock particle.1 It would seem that the energy required to deform the rock beyond its critical strain, resulting in the formation of a crack tip, represents practically all of the energy required. Most of the primary crack tips presumably form on the surface. A simple method of designating feed and product size is necessary for the evaluation of crushing and grinding results. Taggart's suggestion2 that the 80 pet passing size be used has been found very practical. In this paper, the square opening screen size which 80 pct of the feed passes is designated as the feed size F, and the size which 80 pct of the product passes, or the product size, is designated as P. Dr. Oldshue has provided a useful summary of a voluminous subject and my task will be to select and direct attention to those areas of mixing theory and practice which are germane to mineral processing in general, and to fine particle treatment in particular. Pulp mixing in impeller actuated reactors occurs in mineral processing in several different applications: (1) emulsification of reagents; (2) mixing pulp with 'reagents as in conditioning for subsequent operations (such as flotation, flocculation or agglomeration) ; (3) high intensity agitation, as in (a) disintegrating and dispersing aggregates, and (b) aggregating particles as in shear flocculation or in selective agglomeration; (4) hydrometallurgy; (5) hydrometallurgy with gas phase (e.g., Arbiter process); . (6) flotation in sub-aeration machines. Attention is invited to 3 above in which two opposite effects can be induced by proper choice of chemical treatment and hydrodynamic conditions. Successful processes for treating mineral fines require excellent aggregate dispersion in order to fully accomplish the liberation stage. Some processes depend further upon selective aggregation following dispersion. The term “dispersion” is often used in different senses which for present purposes will be clarified at the bottom of the next page.

The process of initiating opencast blasts through long cables is onerous. An obvious alternative is to replace these with radio controlled firing apparatus. Such devices appear from time to time and with the advance of telecommunications, more are likely to appear. However, there are two crucial and seemingly intractable obstacles to overcome: firstly, the problem of malfunction of the system, which can either fire prematurely or go into a state of suspense in which it is unknown whether firing might unexpectedly occur, and secondly, the problem of terrorism, as such a system could provide the capability for an off the shelf remote bomb. The issues of accessibility and electronic reliability when linked to explosives in a mining environment have to be demonstrated to be adequately covered before serious consideration should be given to these systems, up to now largely confined to military applications.

Jute fiber reinforced polymer composites are among the most investigated and applied natural composites. In this past decade the mechanical properties of these composites has been assessed for various types of test conditions. However, the reported results correspond mainly to short-cut jute fiber composites, which do not present the highest mechanical strength as compared to continuous fibers of the same kind. In order to complement these results, the present work evaluated the mechanical behavior, by means of flexural tests, of polyester matrix composites reinforced with continuous jute fibers. Bend tests were conducted in standard specimens with up to 40% of jute. Fracture analysis by SEM displayed the rupture mechanisms. The results showed an improvement in some flexural properties with incorporation of jute fiber. However, a low fiber/matrix interfacial stress was responsible for limitation in the values attained by some properties.

The Rock Quality Designation (RQD) is a standard scalar measure of rock quality used in common rock mass classification systems (e.g. RMR, Q system). RQD is measured along diamond drill holes. RQD interpolation between holes is nontrivial. Despite the inherent limitations of drill hole data and the local complexities of structural geology, it is often the only information available for mining and major civil engineering projects. Therefore, maximizing the usefulness of this data is warranted. We derive a correction for directional effects that help reduce the bias and improve the accuracy of the estimations. The correction is derived with the aid of numerous simulations. It relies on simple information, the angle between the joint normals and the borehole axis (JO). A reference direction is identified as the borehole direction with smallest JO. A multiple linear regression model based on JO statistics in the various boreholes defines the correction model. The corrected RQD values are then interpolated. It is shown the method enables reducing the bias on RQD estimation by 50% and improves the accuracy of the estimates by 30%. The corrected RQD values show stronger spatial continuity than the raw values. The benefits of estimating the RQD indirectly by using joint frequency measures are also assessed.
