THE various phases of the Mexican oil industry have received so much publicity that there is little to add to the discussion of present and future production, extent and importance of prospective fields, and status of petroleum legislation, to mention but a few of the angles of the Mexican oil problem. However, out of this wealth of information, which is generally of contradictory nature, the average petroleum man is at a loss to know something definite regarding the various questions involved so, keeping the foregoing in mind, it has been the writer's aim to record in a concise form the most reliable and up-to-date information regarding the salient features of the Mexican oil situation. PRESENT STATUS OF MEXICAN OIL INDUSTRY Production During 1921 The Mexican oil fields, during 1921, produced in round numbers 203,000,000 bbl. of which 176,000,000 bbl., or 86 per cent., were exported, the bulk of -these exports, or about 73.3 per cent., going to the United States. The Mexican exports were divided by grades as follows: Light crude, 47.0 per cent.; heavy crude, 22.0 per cent.; tops, 3.5 per cent.; fuel oil from light crude, 24.0 per cent. The balance, or 3 1/2 per cent., includes the bunker fuel shipments and the coastwise trade in Mexico, which is not classified as to grades. The figures show that, in importance, the light-oil fields from about 755 per cent. of the Mexican petroleum industry.

The late 1960's and 1970's saw the initial development of the coal resources of the Bowen Basin of Queensland. The projects developed relied on large scale, open-cut operations using draglines for overburden removal and, in the majority of cases, project viability could be established based solely on those open-cut operations. Many of the mines developed in the 1980's have the same characteristics.Unlike these mines, the German Creek Mine has limited open-cut reserves at low overburden to coal ratios, and planning of the complex involved a large open-cut mine capable of developing early cash flow, with phased introduction of underground mining to replace open-cut capacity as the strip ratio increased.

"Column and other non-conventional flotation approaches continue to provide benefits where conventional flotation processes have exhibited limited success. This is particularly evident with respect to flotation of ultrafine and coarse particles. Advancements in air sparging technology have provided the ability to produce finer bubbles than previously possible. The generation of finer bubbles coupled with the froth washing capabilities of a flotation column has demonstrated improvements in ultrafine particle recovery while simultaneously producing a high-grade float product. On the other side of the spectrum, the use of these sparging technologies while applying flotation fundamentals to a fluidized-bed reactor has increased the maximum floatable particle size up to and in excess of 3 mm. Benefits of higher recoveries and reduced reagent consumption have resulted from the use of these technologies. An additional benefit includes a reduction in plant grinding requirements. As such, this paper describes the application of Cavitation-Tube sparger technology and fluidized-bed flotation (HydroFloat). A review of data from industrial and pilot-scale applications is also provided.INTRODUCTIONConventional (mechanical) froth flotation is considered the workhorse of the minerals processing industry. This low-cost process makes it possible to selectively recover minerals by exploiting the difference in surface characteristics (e.g., wettability) of the valuable component and the waste material. Unfortunately, the upper particle size limit for flotation rarely exceeds 0.600 mm, and is typically maintained at less than 0.300 mm for most industrial applications. For many commercial base metal plants, the particle size range for optimum recovery is typically between 0.01 and 0.1 mm (Lynch et al., 1981). This finding is not novel. In fact, the effect of particle size on flotation recovery was studied as early as 1931 by Gaudin et al. who showed that coarse (+0.250 mm) and extremely fine particles (-0.010 mm) are more difficult to recover than particles of an intermediate size. The loss of recovery is due to inherent limitations associated with the flotation process, including bubble-particle adhesion and collision, detachment, buoyancy, and transport."

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

A thermogravimetric study has been conducted to follow the decomposition and volatilization of arsenic from enargite concentrate in nitrogen and slightly oxidizing atmospheres. Temperature has a large effect on the rate of volatilization of arsenic. Fractional volatilization of arsenic as high as 98% were obtained in less than 60 min at 650°C in nitrogen atmosphere, while in slightly oxidizing atmosphere the same volatilization could be achieved in 30 min. It was found that arsenic volatilizes as sulfide in nitrogen atmosphere and as 4xture of sulfide and oxide in atmospheres containing 1% oxygen. By using the pore blocking and the first order kinetic models, apparent activation energies of 213 and 200 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 780 - 900 K and 205 and 184 kJ/mol for the temperature range of 900 - 985 K were determined for enargite and copper concentrate, respectively.

Various methods are given for estimating the number per unit volume and average size of convex particles from measurements on a projection through a slice of the structure. The determination of the size distribution is considered specifically for spherical particles. The results are applicable to any type of transmission microscopy and also to the correction of measurements made by reflected light on semitransparent materials. WITH the advent of electron transmission microscopy, the metallurgist is confronted with the problem of relating a projected image to the three-dimensional properties of the structure. This paper deals with the estimation of the number per unit volume and size of particles dispersed in a matrix. The case of convex particles will first be treated (the results will be applicable as approximations to particles of more general shape) and then spherical particles will be considered specifically. The latter represent a special case frequently encountered in practice and one which is also amenable to a calculation of the effect of overlap on the observed particle-size distribution. Although the present treatment was prompted by the needs of the electron microscopist, the results are applicable to transmission studies with any type of radiation. In addition, they can be used in the analysis of semitransparent materials by reflected light, the depth of light penetration corresponding to the thickness of the slice or section used in the transmission studies. 1) CONVEX PARTICLES 1.1) General Expression for N,. We will suppose that a "center" (such as the center of mass) is assigned to each particle. The convention used for defining the center is immaterial providing it does not depend on the orientation or location of the particle. Consider a slice through the structure having a pair of parallel faces a distance t apart. It will be assumed that the slice is randomly located with respect to its perpendicular distance from some fixed point, but it is not necessary to assume that its orientation is random. Our problem is to deduce the relationship between the number of par- ticle images seen on an orthogonal projection through the slice with the number, Nv, of particles per unit volume in the original structure.* *Symbols are listed in the Table. The expected number of particles with centers lying within the slice is Nvt per unit area. In addition, there will be elements in the slice contributed by particles whose centers lie without. The number of such elements will be the same as the number of intersections occurring on a two-dimensional plane through the structure; namely N~K, where K is the mean distance, Fig. 1, between tangent planes to a particle averaged over all particles, i.e., Where Ni is the number of particles of class i having the same shape and size, and pi (4, 8) is the probability that an i particle will have a given orientation with respect to the slice. If the particles are randomly oriented, then K is independent of the orientation of the slice and equal to the mean cali-per diameter. The total number of particle elements in the slice is therefore Nv(t + K) per unit area, but fewer will be seen as separate images on the projection plane because of overlap. If MA is the number of elements "lost" by overlap, the number of images per unit area will be NA = Nv(t + K) -MA 121 MA is a function of the slice thickness and must vanish at t = 0. "IntroductionThe typical potash processing plant recovers and/ or upgrades from 10% to 20% of its production through the recrystallization process. The feed to the recrystallization section consists of preconcentrated slurries of fine crystal size that cannot be raised to the required product grade by flotation and fine dusts also of low grade and too fine for compaction feed. It produces high grade white potash crystals that can be marketed as a high grade product or blended into the flotation products to raise their grade. In this chapter, a typical leaching (dissolving) and recrystallization operation will be discussed.The crystallization process makes use of the three phase system chemistry of NaCl, KCl, and H,O. The normal potash process operates on a temperature range of 75°F to 95 °F. A three phase slurry feed to the dissolving circuits will be within that range. The potash (KCl) is dissolved by heating the slurry in the presence of sufficient brine to a temperature of 190°F to 200°F. As the slurry is heated, the potash (KCI) dissolves and the salt (NaCI) precipitates. The potash rich brine is then clarified and the salt and other undissolved solids removed by thickening. Clarified brine becomes the crystallizer feed.The hot brine is cooled in evaporative cooling crystallizers. In cooling, the potash precipitates as a high grade white crystal. Crystallization is done in multiple effects to permit energy recovery and control of the process. In a four effect crystallizer the cooling is done by recycling mother liquor counter currently through the first two effect condensors and using brine pond brine for the cooling of the last two.The crystallizer product is removed from the last effect as a slurry at normal process temperature and is fed either to its own centrifuging and drying circuit or blended with the flotation product for centrifuging and drying."

The White Pine Copper Division of Copper Range Company is a large copper producer operating an underground mine, mill, and smelter on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Principal water discharges are from the tailings basin where these discharges are high in dissolved solids because of mine water pumped into the basin. Principal air emissions are from the smelter where SO2 emissions are uncontrolled. Although water discharges and air emissions have not had significant environmental impacts, environmental regulations could require additional control procedures. Because of low copper prices and poor profitability, cost of compliance with possible new environmental regulations could have serious impact on White Pine with no apparent significant beneficial environmental impacts.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. The copper refinery of Atlantic Copper was modernised and converted to the Isa permanent cathode system in 1995. The technology installed has proved to be an excellent platform for the development of operational improvements. During the years it has been working, the progressive assimilation of the new technology has been achieved and the level of operator knowledge has allowed design production to be reached and surpassed by more than 10%. At the same time, modifications to the work programmes, using existing equipment, have permitted the incorporation of new cells and the achievement of annual production levels of 250,000 tonnes and a productivity of 0.43 t/man-hour.

La Compañía minera Raura es un yacimiento tipo skarn de zinc, plomo, cobre y plata que tiene un solo halo metasomático explotado (Complejo Catuva), además de cuerpos distales de reemplazamiento, vetas y bolsonadas. En ese sentido, los estudios geoquímicos y geológicos a través de la magnetometría y polarización inducida señalan una mayor visión del yacimiento para la búsqueda de nuevos recursos que permitan un enfoque de minería con mayores volúmenes de producción a menores costos y valores de mineral por tonelada. Así también, se ha logrado encontrar un nuevo halo de skarn mineralizado llamado “Franja Hada– Farallón” y una nueva estructura tipo mantiforme llamada “Manto Nadine”, las cuales posibilitan diseñar métodos de explotación masivos tipo taladros largos y pensar en piques de extracción en Raura.

The term solution loss is discussed and defined. Examples are given showing that solution loss may either have a favorable or unfavorable effect on blast furnace performance. A theory is advanced explaining the contradictions encountered during earlier studies of the problem. MANY papers have been written and numerous theories advanced concerning the chemical reactions in the iron blast furnace. Richards, discussing the utilization of fuel in the blast furnace, said: "All the carbon burnt in the furnace should be first oxidized at the tuyeres to CO and all the reduction of oxides above the tuyeres should be caused by CO, which thus becomes CO,. This dictum is not Gruner's own words, but expresses their sense, and from the point of view of the present discussion, it is the correct principle upon which to obtain the maximum generation of heat in the furnace from a given weight of fuel." Richards also said the cubic feet of wind per pound of coke does not express how efficiently a furnace is running, but it will be shown later where Howland paid much attention to this figure. Richards pointed out a shortcoming of Grun-er's discussion in that Richards claimed there is not enough CO generated in a good working blast furnace to possibly combine with the oxygen of the ore, so some of it must be reduced by solid carbon. Mathesius2 made two important contributions. First, he wrote the direct and indirect reduction equations showing the heats of formation in each case and stressed that the indirect reduction reaction produces heat while direct reduction absorbs heat. Secondly, he substantiated Richards' conclusion that there may be a deficiency of CO gas and that some direct reduction is required, but he pointed out that "direct reduction in the hearth has often been confused with direct reduction in the stack, which more correctly should be termed 'premature combustion'." Then he said that "as this carbon is consumed partly by economical (direct reduction in the hearth) and partly by wasteful reactions in ever varying proportions, it is evident that the relation of this total carbon gasified above the tuyeres to the fuel consumption of a furnace cannot possibly have a direct bearing on the economy of furnace operation. The premature combustion of carbon (CO2+C?2CO) must therefore in all cases be considered a detrimental reaction." Johnson3 discussed this whole problem. Through experience Johnson found that when departure from Gruner's ideal working is considerable, the fuel economy is poor, and when the quantity of blast goes up, the fuel economy goes up in the same proportion. Johnson said that the wind per pound of coke is a measure of fuel economy, which will be shown to be wrong. Howland4 established the fact from operating data that there was no relationship between the coke consumption of a furnace and the percentage of coke burned at the tuyeres. But some of his calculations have led to questionable conclusions, such as "it is practically impossible to obtain low coke consumption unless we keep our wind low." Howland made an important contribution when, in his concluding paragraphs, he reached certain negative decisions as to why one coke works better than another. He said the reason one coke works better than another in a blast furnace is not because: 1—there is any difference in the percentage gasified at the tuyeres, or 2—there is any difference of wind required per pound of coke. Korevaar5 propounded a new theory on combustion which disagrees with Gruner because "as far as we can see, this is sufficient proof for the invalidity of Gruner's ideal, for if it was valid, the Low coke consumption should always be accompanied by a higher percentage of carbon burned at the tuyeres. This not being the case, we must deliberately give up our belief in Gruner's ideal." The part in italics will be proved to be wrong. Martin" contended that there was not enough reducing capacity in the blast furnace unless solution loss occurs. He came to a series of conclusions, such as: 1—The greatest efficiency of the blast furnace may not be attained when the reduction is performed entirely by carbon monoxide as demanded by Gruner's definition of the ideally perfect working of the blast furnace. 2—The so-called solution loss reactions, which should more properly be termed direct reduction reactions, promote furnace efficiency. 3—In modern blast furnace practice, the carbon consumption of the process is determined primarily by the carbon needed for reduction purposes, any thermal deficiency created by the reduction process being balanced in practice by the use of blast heat. From a practical standpoint further discussion of the theory of chemical reactions is of little moment. There is however one phase of the general theory of chemical reactions which is very important and that is the combustion of coke in the blast furnace. TRIAL installations of rock bolts, of the slit-rod- and-wedge type, were under way at several units of Day Mines, Inc., when Korean hostilities interrupted the already slow deliveries of steel bars to the Coeur d'Alene district. Factory-made bolts had not yet been put on the local market, so the program was halted for lack of supplies. Interest was revived by a visitor's description of wooden roof bolts. These were said to have been used briefly with apparent success in a coal mine, until apprehension voiced by the U. S. Bureau of Mines caused the practice to be suspended

"The property owned by the Lamaque Mining Company comprises a group of forty-four claims and fractions occupying an area of about 2,458 acres, in west-central Bourlamaque township, Abitibi county, Quebec. It is on ,the outskirts of the towns of Bourlamaque and Val d'Or, about 70 miles east of Noranda, near the eastern end of the belt of greenstones of Keewatin and Timiskaming age that extends eastward through Kirkland Lake into northwestern Quebec, terminating in Haig and Jurie townships 40 miles to the east.The claims on which the orebodies occur were first staked in 1923; No. 3 vein was discovered the following year. The original discovery was made by R. Clark in 1923. This was a small quartz vein containing a pocket of coarse gold on the north side of a hill near the northwestern corner of block 3. It is said that all the gold was removed in one shot in blasting into the vein; elsewhere it was barren. A picket line was then run west along the strike of the vein, which occupied a narrow shear zone, and about 2,000 feet west, in prospecting on either side of the picket line, a large boulder of quartz and tourmaline containing visible gold was found. This led to more intensive prospecting by trenching in the vicinity with the result that the No. 3, or 'float' vein, about 250 feet north of the boulder, was found. Due to low ground this vein was exposed in only one trench. The only other important vein found on the surface was the No. 1, or H, vein, which was exposed in several places by stripping and trenching, but it did not carry appreciable amounts of gold."

DATA concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as "grindability-index numbers," but grindability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pulverized product by a method comparable with commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulverizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation, it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-3/4 -inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horse-powerhours." The channel-roller pulverizer here-inafter described is believed to meet these requirements. HISTORY OF THE MACHINE The work started when Ralph W. Smith, engineer, St. Genevieve Lime Co., St. Genevieve, Mo., was appointed one of the consultants of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, to develop a machine for testing the abrasiveness of coal. Smith had already developed a machine for testing the abrasiveness of dentifrices,1 and it was thought the same principles might be applied to coal. Important progress has occurred in the area of solid phase materials for storage, tank materials and engineering, and new types of materials. More importantly, an understanding of these materials is beginning to allow prediction of hydrides with improved properties. The performance of these new hydrogen storage systems begins to approach that of physical containment methods. The next step is to directly target performance that will permit commercialization.

Ore reserves are based on sampling developed by drilling programs. Correct choices concerning the type of drill to be used, depth of drilling, hole orientation and sample spacing are not only critical to the accuracy of the ore reserve but to the cost in time and money of the project. Appropriate interpretation and use of geologic information can significantly enhance the ability to make these decisions effectively. Geologic characteristics of mineralized rock that affect drilling and sample quality include: rock quality, openness, water content, mode of gold occurrence, internal gold distribution and grain of mineralization. Each of these characteristics and sources of data about them are revuewed, then related to the various drill program options. Finally, some procedures for checking the validity and appropriateness of the selected options are reviewed.
