A method was developed for calibrating photographic emulsions and retrieving working curves for emission spectrography. The values obtained from a digital readout or a recorder chart of a comparator-microphotometer are converted to light intensity values using an emulsion characteristic curve derived from a quartic polynomial preliminary curve. The characteristic curve, consisting of Seidel transform versus the logarithm of intensity, is split into two cubic polynomials at the zero value of the transform, resulting in eight emulsion calibration coefficients. These methods allow use of the calibration curves even at very small and very high intensities, thus extending the range of analysis. Use of a small computer allows rapid calculations. A computer program was written to formulate, code, and file each working curve along with its statistical error. Proper coding of the input data permits the direct printout of the concentration of the elements under investigation.

The Holocene Minninup shoreline is a coastal barrier system stretching from Bunbury to Busselton, in southwestern Australia. It has developed in a microtidal swell wave environment, under the influence of the post- glacial marine transgression and Holocene sea level variation. Barrier sediments thin rapidly across a shallow shelf, and consist of quartzo-felds- pathic sands with a minor skeletal carbonate component. Holocene shelf deposits are laterally extensive sheets overlying Pleisto- cene limestone. Modern carbonate production is small. Development of the Minninup barrier system has been controlled largely by low rates of sediment input from terrigenous and carbonate sources, late Holocene sea level fluctuati,.,s, and pre-existent coastal landforms composed of Pleistocene limestone. Modern controls on sedimentation are the refracted, shoaling swell wave regime, and onshore winds, which combine to promote nett northward longshore drift. Holocene barrier systems of the southern Swan Coastal Plain are of several different types. These include prograded sequences of beach ridges overlying shoreface sediments, such as is found at Rockingham and parts of Geographe Bay, and complex polygenetic systems typified by the Leschenault Peninsula. Pre- liminary investigations of the barrier stratigraphy of the Minninup shoreline indicate that both progradational and polygenetic sequences are present. The processes involved in shoreline development and heavy mineral accumulation are being studied using aerial photograph inter- pretation, beach profile monitoring, sampling, and granulometric analysis. This will lead to an enhanced understanding of the mechanisms of heavy mineral accumulation, and assist in the development of genetic models as aids for Exploration.

Samples weighing O· 2 g are digested with 2 ml of 72 per cent perchloric acid for 2 hr at 180°C, and then diluted to 10 ml. with water. After settling, an aliquot of clear solution is reduced with ascorbic-citric acid, and then a zinc dithiol solution is added to form a coloured molybdenum complex which is extracted with petroleum spirit for comparison with standards.Concentrations down to 2 p.p.m. may be analysed at rates up to 150 determinations per day.

The Harima Works started its ISP operation in 1966 and been expanding its production capacity from 3,000 tonne Zn/month and 1,500 tonne Pb/month to 7,500 tonne Zn/month and 2,500 tonne Pb/month. It is not only treating zinc, lead and bulk concentrates but also secondary materials like Waelz kiln oxide from the Shisaka Works of Sumitomo Metal Mining, waste treatment sludges, industrial wastes and others. Its final products cover Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc, Special High Grade (SHG) zinc, continuous galvanizing grade zinc, electrolytic lead, cadmium, indium, thallium and sulfuric acid. This paper briefly describes the smelter's historical and present operations. The key data for the current impurity control management and for the distribution of impurities such as copper, iron and arsenic are presented.

The occurrence of a secondary, dust-fuelled explosion following blasting of sulphide ores has been reported in mines in many countries, including canada, the USA, Australia and South Africa. However there has been little effort to document the events and develop effective control technology. Following a detailed investigation of an incident at the Geco Di vision of Noranda Minerals Inc. , the company held a conference of interested parties in October 1986 to review the state-of-the-art and to agree on action. '!his paper outlines the causes and effects of such explosions, the key conference points and conclusions, and subsequent information-exchange and teclmology-developrnent activities.

Mining and the related extractive and processing industries are chiefly responsible for America's high standard of living. Enormous quantities of sand and gravel, limestone, copper, iron and a myriad of other mineral commodities are required to sustain our growing nation. However, the mineral deposits, both domestic and foreign, are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Adding substantially to the problem, is the fact that the conditions are worldwide. Foreign politics are increasingly affecting mineral commodity availability. Figure 1, taken from Bureau of Mines, "Status of the Mineral industries 1976" illustrates our dependency (in some cases total) on foreign sources for vital mineral commodities. While few nations are capable of exerting an OPEC-like influence on any one mineral commodity, the threat of cartel arrangements and related control strategies is evident. Nationalization of entire industries, once they become self-sufficient, is also exerting a disruptive influence on a large portion of the mineral industries.

JESSE L. JONES,* Pittsburgh, Pa. (written discussion?).-The most important criterion on which judgment of the quality of manganese bronze can be based is its freedom from lead. Not over 0.03 per cent. of lead should be present in a good grade of manganese bronze. While it is not questioned that manganese bronze with a high tensile strength and considerable ductility can be made .from materials that will give a lead content of possibly 2 to 3 per cent., there is no doubt that such material, while it may machine readily, will be found to withstand the impact test very poorly, and hence be unsuited for high-grade engineering work. When lead is present in considerable amounts, it forms in small pools in the alloy and the material has little strength at these points; in fact, such spots in the metal are equivalent to nicks in a test bar as far as their effect on tensile strength is concerned. A further objection to a high lead content is the ease with which it oxidizes and its consequent tendency to produce dross. A second characteristic of a high-grade manganese bronze is a low content of manganese. This should not exceed 0.05 per cent.; in fact, very many of the best grades of manganese bronze show, on analysis, only a trace of manganese or no manganese whatever. Manganese is a deoxidizer and its ready oxidation protects the other metals of the alloy; but if it is present in large amounts it will produce considerable manganese dioxide, which does not separate readily from the molten alloy and may produce black specks or drossy spots and render the obtaining of clean castings difficult. Aluminum should be present in a good grade of manganese bronze in only very small amounts. A content of 0.10 per cent. aluminum is ample. Larger amounts have a tendency to increase the shrinkage of the alloy, to give the ingots and castings a white, scruffy appearance, and to prevent the beautiful, golden, oxidization color characteristic of high-grade manganese bronze and a most excellent indication of quality. The work that the author of the paper has done is valuable from a con- servation standpoint, and it will supplement, in a marked degree, the advances that have been made by a number of manufacturers of manganese bronze in utilizing the turnings from this material. "The Buffalo gold deposit is a small deposit consisting of auriferous quartz-tourmaline veins within a granodiorite stock in the Red Lake greenstone belt. This study aims to characterize the mineralizing fluids through fluid inclusion and stable isotope analyses and to compare them with those of the world-class Campbell- Red Lake deposit. Four types of fluid inclusions were recognized, including carbonic, aqueous-carbonic, aqueous, and halite-bearing aqueous, with the carbonic type being the most abundant. Raman analyses indicate that the carbonic phase mainly consists of CO2, with minor amounts of N2 and CH4, and rarely detectable H2S. The homogenization temperatures of the carbonic inclusions range from -41.7° to 30.9°C. The homogenization temperatures and salinities of the aqueous, halite-bearing aqueous, and aqueous-carbonic inclusions are 130° to 276°C and 9.7 to 23.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., 155° to 207°C and 32.9 to 42.3 wt.% NaCl equiv., and 215° to 357°C and 8.3 to 19.7 wt.% NaCl equiv., respectively. The d18OVSMOW values of tourmaline range from 8.2‰ to 9.0‰, and those of quartz from 11.4‰ to 11.9‰, with estimated fluid temperatures from 323° to 399°C based on the quartz-tourmaline isotopic geothermometer. It is postulated that separate CO2-dominated and aqueous fluids intermittently invaded the fracture/vein system in response to fluid pressure fluctuations, with limited mixing. The CO2-dominated fluid, previously recognized in Campbell-Red Lake as the main mineralizing fluid, is inferred to have been derived from deeper parts of the crust. This deep CO2-dominated fluid reservoir might have been a common source for gold mineralization in the Red Lake greenstone belt. Although blasthole deviation is a problem which can seriously affect blasting operations, there is little practical emphasis on controlling this deviation and no practical emphasis on understanding its practical behaviour. The most common way of dealing with it involves tight control over drill set up and surveying hole paths. The surveying might involve simple collar location and inclination measurement to estimate the hole's actual path. At best, some operations routinely survey hole paths after all holes in a stope have been drilled. In addition, although there is an expectation that holes will deviate, there is no planning for this behaviour in order to reduce its impact on the blast. Design decisions are invariably made with the assumption that holes are straight. If and when surveys reveal problems it is possible only to adjust charging and initiation to 'work around them'. In extreme cases the drill might be recalled to fill in gaps. The lack of planning and the lack of understanding are doubtlessly linked.A model is presented that will predict the expected path of a drill hole. By knowing how a selected few holes deviated it is possible to make a good estimate of the deviation of other holes in the same rock mass. After minimal calibration the model can be used to increase the amount of information for a given amount of surveying or the amount of surveying can be reduced while maintaining the same level of knowledge of blasthole deviation. Equally important is the ability to plan for the deviation in future drilling through altering the initial collar angles or drilling from different locations. It is the authors' hope that planning for hole deviation becomes as much a part of the design process as planning for detonator delay scatter and explosive performance variation.

Since German operators opened the Tsumeb mine in the early 1900's, continuous operation has been interrupted only by enforced shutdowns during two world wars and the depression of the 1930's. Original metallurgical practice was blast furnace smelting. This was applicable only to low zinc ore, leaving large tonnages of high zinc ore to be stockpiled on the surface. A gravity concentrator using tables, buddles, and jigs operated for several years, but differential flotation of the ore did not get beyond the experimental stage. When the property was put up for sale by the South African Custodian of Enemy Property there was an estimated 434,000 tons of ore on surface dumps. The dump material, assaying 4.48 pct Cu, 15.8 pct Pb, and 10.9 pct Zn, had become highly oxidized during a stay of many years on the surface. But these dump ores had to be used in evaluating possible metallurgy because the shaft became flooded after the 1940 shutdown and underground ore was unavailable. Many companies examined Tsumeb but quickly lost enthusiasm because of the formidable metallurgical problems presented by the dump ore. However, on the basis of extensive test work, the present company decided that differential flotation would be successful and purchased the property after competitive bidding.

"The decline of the “super cycle” has placed an end to a decade of production-focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. Today, the sector is placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. However, most cost management systems in the minerals industry are not conceived as value driving tools but to meet financial accounting and reporting needs. This research draws from a the development of an innovative cost management methodology that applies Activity-Based Bottom-Up cost budgeting and continuous improvement tools to develop a value-driven cost management system for sustainable improvement of operational efficiency and cost reduction. The methodology was successfully tested in the Andina underground mine III Panel sector of Corporation del Cobre (CODELCO), in Chile. INTRODUCTION Cost management is fundamental to profitability of any industrial project. Even more essential in mining, an industry that deals with commodities, which prices are dictated by the market and are beyond the management capacity of the company. The end of the mining “super cycle” and the advent in 2008 of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), placed an end to a decade of production focused strategies, with operating cost growing at rates higher than production. The sector was placed on a tough ride and forced to shift focus to cash preservation and efficient cost management. Many mining companies have seen themselves into the urgent need of cost management systems capable of achieving sustainable productivity gains and consistent profitability. Cost management is composed of three main processes: estimation, budgeting and control [1]. A number of conventional techniques have been used for cost estimation and budgeting for many years. However, most cost control systems in the minerals industry cannot be referred to as “cost management” since they are conceived to fulfil accounting and reporting needs, rather than to improve operational efficiency [2]. In general, conventional cost budgeting and control systems in mining use a “top-down” methodology, which lacks of necessary details, and fail as a management tool leading to undesirable results [3]."

The Blind Springs Hill pumice beds are located 5 miles southwest of Benton, California in the foothills between the Benton Mountain Range and Blind Springs Valley. The best exposures of the pumice are in an area 0.75 miles west of Blind Springs Hill. The pumice is Quaternary ejecta material which came from the rhyolitic volcanoes in the Glass Mountain-Volcanic Tablelands area of Mono County. The pumice beds occur in two distinct layers separated by an unconformity. The upper layer is 0 to 11 feet thick and consists of coarse subangular pumice fragments, some of which are over 1.75 inches in diameter. The lower bed is medium to coarse grained with subangular fragments up to 1.0 inch. The lower bed is 0 to 9 feet thick. Overburden at the Blind Springs Hill deposit varies from 0 to 15 feet. There are approximately 1 million cubic yards of material in the deposit that can be mined. The size distribution in the deposit is mostly fine with only 10.6% of the pumice fragments being over 0.5 inch in diameter, the minimum size needed for stone-wash or acid-wash applications. Suitability of pumice for the textile industry is quantified by standard 15-minute abrasion and absorption tests. In the Blind Springs Hill deposit, the plus 0.5 inch fraction has an abrasion loss of 33% which is too high for stone-wash application but it has an absorption capacity of 36% which makes it suitable for acid-wash applications in the textile industry. The abrasion and absorption properties of this deposit are within the range of those which have been measured for other pumice deposits within the United States.

Many articles have been written describing peculiar and particular types of drilling. Little correlation has been made between the character of ground to be drilled and sampled and the type of drilling most desirable for procuring satisfactory samples. In development work, the engineer and metallurgist often desire the recovery of a sample in as physically natural a condition as possible, particularly when the sample must provide material for process tests as well as chemical and physical analyses. This paper describes the results of experimentation in drilling unconsoli-dated materials carrying titanium minerals in the Magnet Cove area, Ark. The drilling was most difficult in that the ground varied much in consistency, and it was vitally necessary to recover a physically natural sample. Ordinary churn drilling recovered a sample that could be analyzed chemically, but the sample was not in its natural state. The problem was successfully solved by utilizing and further developing methods used in the oil and clay industries. In the Magnet Cove area of Hot Spring County, Ark., the titanium minerals include rutile, brookite, ana- tase, leucoxene, and others. They occur in soil, clays, and altered rocks adjacent to novaculite in contact meta-morphic deposits. In preparing titanium minerals for use in the industry, it is necessary to know the physical characteristics of the ore. Also it is believed that the particular physical character of the titanium mineral used is just as important as the chemical character. Brookite and rutile, for example, are the same chemically but differ in crystalline structure. In preparing titanium minerals for market, beneficia-tion is necessary. For the millman to make a satisfactory laboratory test, the sample he uses must be as nearly of the same physical character as he would have from mine run ore. In the past at Magnet Cove, churn drilling had been done on the properties, and assays of total titania had been obtained. It was found, however, that the total titania was indicative merely of the presence of titania but did not tell the metallurgist the character of the material or even give him the slightest indication of what he might expect to recover. When the Bureau of Mines entered the field in the winter of 1947 and 1948, it was therefore necessary that a natural sample be recovered. LIMITATlONS IN ORDINARY PRACTICE The churn drilling that had previously been done had shown that the occurrence of titanium-bearing mineral was somewhat widespread. The samples were, however, completely beaten up and in a finely powdered state. The minerals had been slimed, and such ore dressing tests as were made from the churn-drill samples were found to be worthless. Test pitting and outcrop sampling had provided satisfactory samples of surface ore but did not represent the entire ore body. A quantity of rutile had been produced from the surface residual concentrations in the westerly part of the cove, but production ran into metallurgical trouble as depth was attained. Representative deep samples upon which ore dressing research might depend were needed.

At the end of August, U.S. producer posting of 99.5 percent unalloyed aluminum had been established at 48¢ per pound. At that time, dealer-quoted unalloyed ingot was reportedly at 44¢-47¢. CADMIUM: By late August, most U.S. producers had raised cadmium selling prices by 25¢ to $3 per pound. As a consequence, dealer quoting of cadmium ranged from $2.95 to $3.05 per pound. COAL: The wildcat strike, which began in southern West Virginia on July 19 and eventually spread to nine other States before ending on August 13, at its peak, idled approximately 115,000 miners and accounted for daily coal losses of an estimated 1.5 million tons at the height of the work stoppage. Concerned about the effects of the production cutbacks, the Bureau of Mines, early in the strike period, initiated its coal strike monitoring system which it had developed during the prolonged coal strike in the fall of 1974.

A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. Marked changes in cutting practice may be expected as a result of the advances in metallurgical science that have produced special alloy steels with properties requiring different cutting techniques than for ordinary low-carbon steels. Much current attention is being directed to those problems of modified cutting practices. Cutting has thus ceased to be merely a shaping problem. Narrowly sized samples of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) and covellite (CuS) were leached in oxygenated acidic sulphate-chloride solutions. Chalcocite leaches via a two-stage process, the first stage being much more rapid than the second. The apparent activation energies are 42.7 kJ/mol and 68.2 kJ/mol respectively, indicating that both stages are controlled by surface chemical reactions. The leaching of covellite is also chemically rate limited with an apparent activation energy of 77.0 kJ/mol. The shrinking core model is able to be used to describe the leaching processes of both copper sulphides. Over 97% of copper present in chalcocite dissolved in 0.5 M H2SO4i0.5 M NaCl solution under one atmosphere pressure of oxygen at 85¦C in three hours from particles 36 pm in diameter while only 85% of the contained copper in covellite particles 13 pm in diameter dissolved in the same solution under the same pressure at 90¦C in six hours. About 99% of the sulphide sulphur in chalcocite was oxidised to elemental sulphur while only 90% of sulphide sulphur was converted to elemental sulphur during covellite leaching. The mechanism proposed for the two-stage leaching of chalcocite particles is as follows: in the first stage, cuprous ions rapidly diffuse to the external reaction surface where they lose electrons and go into solution as a complex cupric chloride ion CuCl'. The second leaching stage begins when covellite is formed at the external surface. Copper again goes into solution as the CuCl* ion. The mechanism for leaching synthetic covellite is similar to the second leaching stage for chalcocite except that the leaching rate of synthetic covellite is substantially lower than that of the newly formed 'covellite'. Elemental sulphur formed on the particle surface retards the dissolution processes during both chalcocite and covellite leaching. The presence of chloride ions is necessary if essentially all of the copper from chalcocite is to go into solution. When no chloride ions were present, the leaching rate of both newly formed and synthetic covellite was almost zero. The main role of chloride ions in both chalcocite and covellite leaching appears to be to disrupt the passivation film of sulphur on the particle surface.

Based on earlier tests that showed steel to be much more likely to cause frictional ignition than tungsten carbide, the Bureau of Mines redesigned coal-cutting bits to reduce the hazard of face ignitions. Two bit designs--a mushroom-shaped bit with a conical shank and a dove-tail bit with a rectangular shank--are described, as well as bit wear tests conducted in the laboratory and in an operating coal mine. In laboratory tests, for 1/8-, 1/4-, and 1/2-in-deep cuts and cutting speeds of 280, 500, and 660 ft/min, the mushroom bit had significantly longer tip wear life than the conventional bit; the dovetail bit was also superior to the conventional bit. Results of in-mine tests on the mushroom bit agree well with laboratory results. In-mine tests of the dovetail bit are underway.

Discussion of the paper of J. NORMAN BULKLEY, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 355 to 373. GRAHAM BRIGHT, E.. Pittsburgh, Pa.-On p. 265 mention is made of a change from steam hoist to electric hoist. The arrangement mentioned, of using a geared motor, and having the gearing and counter-shaft in a separate, self-contained unit, and then connecting that to the hoist by means of a flexible coupling, is very good. Sometimes, however, it is necessary to change a geared hoist over to an electric hoist. 'In that case the motor could be either direct-connected to the countershaft or geared to the countershaft, making a double-reduction gearing. Trouble has been experienced with this method on account of the hoist not being designed for electric drive. It may be of a rather light construction which will not stand the forces obtained by steam operation, the maximum being determined by the steam pressure which can be obtained in the cylinder. With motors of hoisting types, torques, can be obtained, which are so far in excess of anything that the steam engine could give, that this sometimes results in disaster when a motor is applied to a hoist of that type. If the operator gets a little careless, he may overstrain the hoist, And cause damage, so that this question should be looked into when changing from a steam hoist to an electric hoist. The hoist should be rugged enough to stand the torques which may be attained by careless operation, in which case, instead of using a three-bearing motor, with a pinion between two of the bearings, it is much better to arrange for a two-bearing motor, arranging for a coupling through a flexible coupler. In another place trouble is mentioned as due to the vibration of a geared hoisting motor. That can be overcome by supplying a flexible coupling between the motor and the hoist proper. You will find, if a flexible coupling is furnished, that the motor troubles will largely disappear. K. A. PAULY (communication to the Secretary*), Schenectady, N.
