A practical mathematical treatment is presented for the determination and control of conveyor belt acceleration, particularly for conditions of starting where vertical curves are involved. A typical sample problem is analyzed, with required calculations, to clarify the procedure. THE part that acceleration plays in starting a belt conveyor and its effect on belt conveyor design are well understood in a general way. Its practical importance is easily overlooked, however, and under some conditions, it is absolutely necessary to give the problem of acceleration detailed study. Most handbooks on conveyor belting design adequately present basic data for the determination of acceleration values. This paper will only attempt to present practical thinking and a convenient method of treatment of acceleration in belt conveyor design. Mathematical Analysis In working out the various problems of conveyor belt acceleration, the starting point, as presented by the handbooks, is the familiar formula of "force of acceleration is equal to the mass times acceleration." By expressing these fundamental quantities in terms of belt conveyor design, it is possible to arrive at the unsuspected conclusion that the acceleration time for horizontal belt conveyors is independent of the load, and instead, dependent upon the belt speed, the type of drive arrangement and drive pulley, and the idler coefficient of friction. The mathematics leading to this conclusion are shown in Table I, which has been prepared to show this derivation. While at first the conclusion just given may not seem to be reasonable, further reflection indicates that obviously the type of drive pulley and the type of drive do affect materially the tension in the conveyor belt, and thus, as clearly shown, the time of acceleration is dependent upon the factors mentioned. Inasmuch as all of the factors except time are predetermined by the belt conveyor design, it becomes relatively easy to establish the accelerating time and to reduce further this time determination to a simple graph from which the time in seconds can be read directly. Such a graph is given in Fig. 1. The table appearing on Fig. 1 should be explained further. For a given belt speed, the time of acceleration can be expressed as a percentage of the belt speed. The time of acceleration is also dependent on the drive arrangement, and changes in the drive arrangement consequently change the time of acceleration. It further follows that for a given belt speed, the time expressed as a percentage of that belt speed also changes with the type of drive. Obviously then, it becomes possible to graph the percentage of speed for .each type of drive against the belt speed and accelerating time, after which, for a given belt speed and type of drive, the time can be read directly in seconds. Two constants were established for Fig. 1, the first one being the limiting of the maximum acceleration tension to 35 pct of the full load operating tension in the belt. The purpose of this is to limit the total tension imposed upon the belt during the acceleration period to 135 pct of the full load operating tension, 'which is the amount required to start or breakaway the fully loaded belt conveyor from rest. The other constant is the friction factor used for the idler equipment, which has been established as 0.022. For installations where it is necessary to establish the values of acceleration, invariably high grade idler equipment is used, and it has been established from field experience that 0.022 for the idler friction factor is amply conservative. The use of this friction factor for idlers must be tempered with judgment, of course, for occasions will arise where more power than indicated is required to start, even with the very best of equipment, such as low temperature operations that tend to congeal the grease in the bearings and thus produce additional friction drag. An inspection of the table in Fig. 1 affords a convenient rule of thumb method for determining the acceleration time, which conveniently can be 5 pct of the belt speed in seconds. The 5 pct of belt speed figure is close to the average for most types of drives. In using Fig. 1 it must be emphasized that it applies accurately to horizontal belt conveyors only.

Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. This paper presents a resume of the likely profitable mining areas in New Zealand. It covers the main "minerals" - gold, coal, oil and gas, ironsands, silica sands, clays, lump silica, perlite, sulphur and limestone.The potential mining projects are depicted on a map of New Zealand together with the associated works involved in hydro-electric and geothermal power development requirement for industries such as aluminium, nickel ferro-silicon or silicon carbide production.The political need for mining development to relieve unemployment and reverse emigration is stressed. A case is made for exploration and development assistance by government in labour re-training, energy supply and transportation, if the tremendous losses through lack of use of human and industrial resources are to be rapidly reduced. These losses are currently estimated at $10,000,000,000 per year.The need for protection of the sanctity of contract and security of tenure of all mining operations is touched on briefly as is the need for a reasonably balanced view on conservation. However as both of these are more properly covered in papers on the legal and environmental aspects of the mining climate they are presented here only as they affect the economy of the mining operation.Finally there is a brief comment on the mining climate in New Zealand relative to Australia and South Pacific mining operations.

The supply of hydrocarbons is being exhausted, while energy needs remain the same in the industrialized nations and are increasing in the Third World.The petroleum era is expected to come to an end in this century, as there will no longer be enough. Gas, coal and electricity will replace some oil as it becomes scarcer during the transitional period before new sources are gradually developed.There is a critical need for energy conservation in the short term. Conservation will, to a great extent be justified by savings, as it will be less expensive to recover energy that is being wasted than to acquire additional energy.The gradual development of new technology is expected to increase energy self-sufficiency in the long term. New energy sources are attracting a growing interest and are becoming more economically feasible and marketable. These rediscovered energy sources include peat, wood, solar, domestic waste and windmills.The sudden increase in energy prices has forced users to look at the way energy is used and find ways to save it. Major industries have found that using separate meters for each department spurs energy responsibility. Energy trim programs now rank in importance with profitability, productivity and with quality.Energy has become such a crucial cost element that better data are essential for planning. Data acquisition varies with plant size and number of utilities. Meters can be read manually or monitored by computerized energy management systems.The relationship of electrical energy input and production levels for a typical uranium mine will be used to demonstrate two steps to energy management. The first step reduces demand through peak load control; the second reduces the waste of energy by monitoring energy used per unit of production.The direct benefit of saving energy is the money saved."

The A. P. Green Refractories Co. operates clay mines in ten states. Eight of these states have reclamation laws with which we have to comply and indications are that the U. S. Congress will pass a federal surface mining reclamation act in the near future. These regulations, in addition to the value of land in most areas, dictate that mining and reclamation be considered as a single operation. In many instances the land may be more valuable after properly planned mining and reclamation than before. Refractory clay, commonly called "fire clay" is defined as a siliceous clay rich in hydrous aluminum silicates, capable of withstanding high temperatures. It is deficient in iron, calcium, and alkalies and approaches kaolin on composition. Refractory clay is much more limited in occurrence and usage than common clay or shale. During 1971, common clays and shales were mined in 47 states with a total production of 45 million tons. Fire clay production was reported in 22 states with a total production of only slightly over 3 million tons.(1) Many of these producing areas are extremely limited in extent and production. Several are contained within a one or two county area. This reflects the unique geological conditions required for the formation or development of fire clay. The major fire clay producing areas in the United States are shown in Figure 1.

Tunnels and other underground structures are typically designed using ground-structure interaction models instead of traditional structural analysis programs. This allows for the degree of load sharing etween the two odies to e calculated allowing for a more efcient design. hile modern codes outline the use of limit states with factors on applied actions, limit states are not typically compatible with ground-structure interaction models. Consequently, the engineer is left to develop rational methods for incorporating load factors into their analyses. Several methods can be considered, including the Largest Factor Method, Averaging Method, Subtraction Method, and Split Factor Method. This paper discusses the approaches, compares their effects using a case example, and provides a recommendation for designers.

The dissolution of gold by cyanide solutions was studied by determining the time required for the solvents to dissolve gold leaf. Minute traces, even 0.5 ppm, of sulphide ion retard the dissolution of gold, and this behavior cannot be accounted for by the presently accepted hypotheses involving oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation. On the other hand, traces of the salts of lead, bismuth, mercury, and thallium considerably accelerate the dissolution. The beneficial effect of lead is dependent upon the pH and cyanide ion concentration of the solution. ALTHOUGH cyanide solvents are used very ex-x*. tensively for the recovery of gold from ores and concentrates, the normal rate of solution of the precious metal as determined by Barsky, Swainson, and Hedley,1 and others2 is less than about 3 mg per sq cm of exposed gold surface per hour, corresponding to a corrosion depth of approximately 1.5 microns (0.00006 in.) per hr. Although the slow rate may be increased to some extent in certain cases, as, for example, when the the gold is partially imbedded in iron pyrites,3 the leaching operation is generally the most time-consuming step of the cyanide process. Frequently it is necessary for the leaching solvents to remain in contact with the ores for 50 to 200 hr in order to dissolve all of the gold particles.' Not only does the slow solution rate cause some increase in the capital costs, but the cyanide consumption also may be increased because of vaporization of hydrocyanic acid and secondary reactions with minerals such as malachite (CuCO3 • Cu(OH)2), and pyrrhotite, which often are associated with gold. It is not surprising that numerous attempts have been made to accelerate the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. Experimental Gold Leaf Test: The gold leaf test was apparently originated by M. Faraday, who, by means of it, discovered that dilute cyanide solutions would dissolve gold readily in the presence of oxygen. The usefulness and reliability of the test have been discussed elsewhere.5,6 Essentially, the method consists of determining the time required for 5-ml portions of cyanide solvents to dissolve squares of 23 carat gold leaf, 0.5 cm on edge, when shaken in 10-ml test tubes with the solvents. The weight of gold leaf per test was 0.051 mg as determined by the direct weighing of a leaf 8.6x8.6 cm (weight = 15 mg) and measuring the area of the test sample (0.25 sq cm). Gold leaf is of remarkably uniform thickness.6 Since gold leaf, like native gold, contains small amounts of copper and silver, the results are comparable with those one might expect in cyaniding gold ores. As six or more tests can be made simul- taneously, the relative efficiencies of the solvents can be evaluated readily. All dilute solutions of lead, bismuth, thallium and mercury salts were prepared by the ordinary dilution method used by chemists. Our C.P. sodium cyanide and buffering reagents had no detectable amounts of either sulphide ion or heavy metals. Soluble Sulphides in the Cyanide Process: The action of soluble sulphides is of interest in the study of the dissolution of gold in cyanide solutions. That gold ores which contain compounds of arsenic and antimony often are not amenable to direct cyanide treatment is well known, and it said that arsenic and antimony are "cyanicides."7 It is commonly believed that part of the sulphur content of such ores is soluble in alkaline solutions to give sulphide ion, which reacts with the free cyanide content of the leaching solutions to form inert thio-cyanates or reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form sulphites or sulphates.8 A purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that sulphide ion may behave in a manner that cannot be explained by either the oxygen-depletion or thiocyanate formation theories and to prove directly that concentrations of sulphide ion which cannot be detected even by colorimetric methods may retard the dissolution of gold.

Four companies mined ball clay in four states during 2005. They included H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals), Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys), Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.32 Mt (1.45 million st) valued at $53.3 million, based on the results of a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. Production in 2004 was 1.22 Mt (1.34 million st) valued at $54.1 million. Tennessee was the leading ball clay producer state with 61 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky.

"Consumer products are a complex man-made mixture of sometimes in excess of 50 elements. In order to recover these complex mixtures of elements either as metals, compounds or energy requires versatile technology in physical separation but also smelting and energy recovery. This paper explores this by referring to the innovative application of Top Submerged Lance (TSL) technology and associated theoretical and environmental aspects to process (recycle) post consumer materials and industrial intermediate products and residues. A diversity of applications has been tested in Ausmelt’s pilot plant in Dandenong and many have gone to commercial scale globally. This paper reviews the varied applications ranging from e-waste recycling, lead and NiCd battery recycling, metals recovery from slags, zinc leach residue processing, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, Municipal Waste Incinerator bottom ash processing, carbon containing residues such as retort ashes and spent pot liner from the aluminium production process as well as use of the technology for materials such as automotive shredder residue (ASR) and plastics. Introduction The modern resource cycle is a link between primary production of metals linked to the recycling of post-consumer goods. The sometimes complex combinations of materials and metals in consumer products such as televisions depicted by Figure 1, does require a range of technology to recover materials, metals and energy for reuse and/or recycling in an economically feasible as well as environmentally friendly manner."

The weathering profile, in arid terrains, is commonly capped by different kinds of hardened crust, whose formation is related to recent or former climates. One may distinguish silcretes, calcretes and the ferruginous (or ferro-aluminous) laterites. the present keynote address mostly deals with the lateritic regolith and, moreover, the influence it has on mineral exploration. The lateritic regolith, also called "cuirasse", is a result of a massive accumulation of Fe (and/or Al) oxides on top of weathering profiles developed during former, probably seasonal humid, climatic episodes, and whose preservation depends on the characteristics of later climates. The total thickness of such weathering profiles commonly exceeds 50 m, with an almost complete substitution of the rock forming minerals by secondary minerals as kaolinite and Fe-Al oxi- hydroxides (hematite, goethite, boehmite, gibbsite). Such an alteration of the primary minerals assemblage is of course accompanied by significant changes of the chemical composition, as concerns major and trace elements. The latter are distributed amongst the main secondary mineral phases or trapped in some primary resistant minerals, but may also be leached, totally or partially. Gold is also affected by lateritic weathering, as shown for instance by morphoscopic and geochemical studies of gold grains collected in the different horizons of the profile, which indicates some dissolution followed by reprecipitation.

DESPITE the fact that American brimstone production has increased 2 times since the prewar period 1935-1939, the demand for sulphur exceeds the supply. To alleviate this situation efforts are being made to increase the production of sulphur and bring the shortage to an end. The most important developments are being undertaken on the Gulf Coast. One new brimstone mine has been put into operation and three others are being developed. These projects are expected to account for a large part of the additional sulphur production now anticipated for the free world.'.' Except for a small amount of byproduct sulphur from sour natural gas and refinery gases, American brimstone is produced by the same process devised by Frasch 60 years ago, consisting essentially of the injection of superheated water at about 325°F into sulphur-bearing formations through wells which are drilled from the surface by standard oilfield methods. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Geologically, the coastal area is of sedimentary origin, having been built up gradually under the sea by deposition of material carried down by large streams to their deltas. Sulphur deposits vary in depth from a few hundred feet to 2500 ft from the surface; in a typical deposit the sulphur occurs as crystalline aggregates in porous limestone and gypsum in concentrations varying from 5 to 40 pct, the thickness of the formation ranging from a few feet to several hundred.3 The deposits are usually surrounded by formations impermeable to the flow of hot water, the top and sides being enclosed by impermeable sediments and the bottom by dense impermeable anhydrite. As the hot water leaves the well bore, it percolates through the formation and transmits its heat to the rock and sulphur. When the sulphur reaches 240°F it melts, separates from the rock, and flows through the hot channels downward to the bottom of the well. Here it is freed from incoming water and from formation water, which saturates the porous rock, by gravity separation, liquid sulphur being 1.8 times as heavy as water. It then is pumped to the surface in a relatively pure state, 99.5 pct or better. Chief contaminants are organic impurities, such as petroleum residues, which are soluble in sulphur and tend to discolor it.' Sixteen deposits of commercial magnitude have been discovered in the Gulf Coast area. Five of these deposits have been depleted and abandoned with production totalling more than 26,886,000 tons. Eight properties are operating and have produced 65,875,-000 tons to Jan. 1, 1952, for a total Frasch-type production of 92,761,000 tons. Three new deposits are under development. Aforementioned deposits are listed in Table I. Each of these deposits has been found in the cap-rock overlying shallow intrusive salt plugs or domes and buried in several hundred to as much as 2500 ft of sediments. All salt domes do .not contain sulphur; only 16 sulphur deposits have been found in a total of 231 salt domes which are known to exist in the Gulf Coastal states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Ten of the salt domes lie in the Gulf of Mexico offshore from the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Additional offshore domes may be found, but their value as a sulphur potential is questionable owing to the great hazard and high cost that can be visualized at these exposed locations where depths of water reach 50 ft. Marsh operations of Freeport Sulphur Co. are in the southeast section of Louisiana. In general, the country is low, flat, relatively uninhabited marshland broken by many shallow lakes and bayous which extend for irregular distances inland. Most systematic studies carried out on passive treatment systems incorporating the use of limestone drains, under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, essentially deal with the treatment of effluents from mines in the USA. A limestone drain typically comprises a trench filled with crushed limestone rocks surrounded by impervious materials. In the case of anoxic drains, the trench is generally isolated under a geomembrane liner covered with soil. Contaminated mine effluents flow by gravity towards these limestone drains where the passive treatment consists in bringing the carbonates into solution, thus increasing the pH and alkalinity. Factors to be considered in the design are: chemistry of the contaminated mining effluent ([metals, [Al], [sulfates], dissolved oxygen, acidity, pH), desired residence time, nature of the rock, grain size, density, void ratio and mass of the limestone rock used, alkalinity, life span and hydraulic behaviour of the drain. Certain secondary effects (saturation by sulfates, co-precipitation, adsorption) may either be beneficial (lowering the sulphate and metal load) or harmful (armoring the limestone rock and clogging of the drain). This paper gives a brief status report on the available knowledge on the use of limestone drains for passive treatment of mining effluents heavily loaded with metals. Examples given include the old Lorraine mine (Ni-Cu), Témiscamingue, where limestone and dolomite rock drains were installed in 1998 when a cover with capillary barrier effects was placed over the tailings site.

Batcheller, we are able to give the following extracts from a letter written by Mr. Caetani: It has been a nice idea of yours to collect for me all those scraps of news I received a few days ago and to send me such a long interesting letter. In four years war I have had practically no news. Burch wrote several times but several of his letters were lost and so mine. I believe I even wrote to you. Much has changed since our last days in Telluride; here and there many have disappeared. Of myself I will tell you in a few words: for a year I was in Cadore(?), where I had the good luck to do to the others what they wished to do to me, and had good luck on my side. Then I went to Macedonia for 5 months, did little fighting but lost my faithful fellow officer and companion.

O presente trabalho estuda a cinética de dessorção do hidrogênio em aços 9% níquel, comercial e tratado termicamente em diferentes condições, através da técnica de Espectroscopia de Dessorção Térmica (TDS). Para a identificação dos aprisionadores de hidrogênio e a determinação da energia de ativação para a dessorção, ensaios de TDS foram realizados a 3, 5, 6, 10 e 15°C/min. Foi identificado um pico de dessorção a 124,66 kJ/mol, classificando o referido sítio aprisionador de hidrogênio como interfaces de grãos de austenita retida, cuja presença é confirmada por microscopia eletrônica e difração de raios-X.

Titanium is not yet being produced on a commercial scale despite the facts that it has some impressive properties, and that it occurs very abundantly in easily-mined, highgrade oxide ores. One important reason for this is that the excellent mechanical properties of the metal were not widely recognised and appreciated until about twenty years ago.Another factor which has tended to retard progress in titanium metallurgy has been the realization that the oxide minerals of titanium are very stable; in other words, considerable energy has to be expended to reduce the oxide to metal. Table 1 presents the minimum energies which would have to be expended to produce one ton of each of the metals, aluminium, magnesium, titanium and iron from their respective oxides under theoretically ideal conditions at normal temperature and pressure. At higher temperatures, the minimum energy requirements are different, but the values for the various metals still fall in the same order as indicated in Table 1.In actual fact, the energy consumption in the case of any particular metal is higher than the ideal value by an amount which can be determined only by' the results of plant practice.
