In any operating mine, especially in precious metals operations, immediate improvements in profitability m readily achievable through more effective grade control. Just as the oil industry has come to recognize that enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in existing oil fields yields a higher return on investment than exploring for new oil, so too must the mining industry recognize the benefits of enhanced metal recovery (EMR). Current grade control practices are generally dismal. The very word "control" suggests a willingness to make the best of a bad situation -- as in "damage control" or "disease control" -- and a failure to perceive the opportunities for improved profit. While damage and disease can merely be controlled, success and improved profit can be engineered. This paper presents one approach to enhanced metal recovery. It shows how existing methods can be used to address the issue of ore/waste discrimination. The following sections outline the problem, describe the current state of the practice of grade control, propose an alternative approach and. illustrate the application of the proposed alternative to actual blasthole data from an operating gold mine.

The areas of concern lay in the processing of, and the subsequent hearing into, Waihi Gold's resource consent applications to extend Martha Mine. The proposed amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 might see the introduction of contestability in the processing of applications - which would have assisted Waihi Gold; and the use of commissioners to hear the applications, with a right of appeal to the Environment Court on points of law only. It is also proposed to have major applications heard directly by the Environment Court. If Waihi Gold's applications had been heard at first instance by the Court, the delays in time and associated costs would have been reduced. However a hearing by commissioners only would not have been satisfactory, there being no right of appeal against the conditions of consent, which if implemented as granted by the Councils would have had a significant impact on the costs associated with the extended project.

Ammonia, the principal source of fixed nitrogen, was produced by 16 companies at 31 plants in the United States during 2003. Fifty-five percent of U.S. ammonia production capacity was centered in Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas because of their large reserves of natural gas, the dominant domestic feedstock. Production In 2004, U.S. producers operated at about 59 percent of their rated capacity. The United States remained the world’s second largest ammonia producer and consumer following China. Urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium phosphates, nitric acid and ammonium sulfate were the major derivatives of ammonia in the United States, in descending order of importance.

The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. "The clearing of tuyeres on copper and nickel converters or similar metallurgical, vessels has, for many years, been done using mainly a manually- operated ""puncher"". One such device is the ""Gaspe Puncher"" developed in 1962 at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter. In an attempt to remove the operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor.The automated puncher is controlled by a Texas Instruments Model 530C Programmable Controller (PLC). Position measurement and control is done using non-contact position measuring equipment from the Tele-Controls Division of Geodimeter Inc. The entire automation system was installed on an existing Gaspe Puncher with minimum disruption to the operation of the smelting process. The operator's panel allows the user to ""block out"" any individual tuyere, and to select any of a variety of operating modes.The development of the automated puncher is described, and the results of several months operation are given.IntroductionThe tuyeres of copper and nickel converters and similar metallurgical vessels become blocked with solidified material formed by the cooling action of the blowing air. This restricts the converting operation. Clearing these blocked tuyeres has for many years been done mainly using a manually-operated ""puncher"" which uses a hydraulic or pneumatically-operated piston to drive a steel bar into the tuyere. The Gaspe Puncher, developed at Noranda's Gaspe Smelter in 1962 is one such device. It is currently being built and sold by Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited, under license to Noranda. There are over 200 units in operation world-wide.In an attempt to remove the Puncher operator from the cab of the Puncher, and to relieve him of a tedious, uncomfortable job, and to increase productivity, Noranda's Horne Division, in cooperation with Heath & Sherwood (1964) Limited and the Noranda Research Centre, undertook to automate the Gaspe Puncher used on the Noranda Continuous Smelting Process Reactor. An analysis of the conditiom fm the dendrite-eutec-tic transition is presented which takes into account a temperature gradient. The composition and temperature in the liquid ahead of a eutectic interface growing at a particular velocity are used to determine whether dendrites can grow faster than the eutectic interface in the liquid which exists ahead of it. If the dendrites grow faster, then a mixed structure with dendrites growing ahead of the eutectic interface is expected. If the dendrites do not grow faster, then only eutectic will be present. The analysis is presented for Sn-Pb system, for which sufficient experimental data to make the analysis are available. The transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic derived by this analysis is in good agreement with the recent experimental observations of Mollard and Flemings on Sn-Pb alloys. In alloys which grow with a lamellar eutectic structure, the lamellar structure can be grown over some range of compositions close to the eutectic composition. When the composition is too far from the eutectic composition, dendrites of one or another of the primary phases grow ahead of the eutectic interface, producing a microstructure consisting of "primary phase" interspersed with a lamellar eutectic. Hunt and Jackson' have recently predicted the range of compositions over which the eutectic phase should grow in Sn-Pb alloys, and the composition-growth rate dependence of the transition from eutectic to dendrites-plus-eutectic. This prediction was based on work on organic eutectics. The model on which the prediction was based assumed that there was no temperature gradient in the system, a condition approximately satisfied in the study of organic eutectics2-5 but not in the growth of metallic alloys. Mollard and Flemings6,7 have recently reported experimental results for Sn-Pb alloys in which they have located the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth. The experiments were performed using large temperature gradients (65 to 515 deg per cm), so that the assumption of zero gradient on which the predictions of Hunt and Jackson' were based does not apply. It is not surprising therefore that the predictions' were not born out by the experiments.7 In the present work, a modification of the model used by Hunt and Jackson is presented which takes into account the temperature gradient. The modified form of the theory predicts the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth in terms of the composition, growth rate, and temperature gradient. Good agreement with the experimental data of Mollard and Flemings7 is obtained. THE HUNT-JACKSON MODEL The model used by Hunt and Jackson' to predict the transition from eutectic to eutectic-plus-dendritic growth was based on the assumption that dendrites grow ahead of a eutectic interface only if they grow faster than the eutectic interface. Analytic expressions for the growth rate of dendrites and the eutectic in Sn-Pb alloys were obtained by fitting experimental data with equations whose form was indicated by theory.

Non-energy raw materials are vital inputs for the EU?s economy and maintaining fair and undistorted access to these materials for EU industry and citizens is increasingly difficult. Within the EU, exploration and extraction have to face increased competition for different land uses and a highly regulated environment. While the EU is currently dependent on the importation of many metals, the overall potential for mining and quarrying in Europe is strong. In spite of this, the land area available for extraction in the EU is constantly decreasing, turning access to land into a key challenge for the extractive industry. The EOMINERS project aims at contributing to demonstrate how to improve the EU capacity in implementing new mining sites and their societal and environmental acceptability. The overall aim of EO-MINERS (Earth Observation for Monitoring and Observing Environmental and Societal Impacts of Mineral Resources Exploration and Exploitation) is to bring into play EO-based methods and tools to facilitate and improve interaction between the mineral extractive industry and the society in view of its sustainable development while improving its societal acceptability. EO offers a unique opportunity to collect necessary spatial parameters that play a key role for better assessments of mining-related environmental and societal impacts. It could enable the development of means to identify the site-specific environmental and societal footprints of mineral resource extraction and to determine their respective significance. This understanding of global and cumulative footprints along a causal chain is needed in order to target policy measures. In this way the expected reduction of environmental and societal footprints in the mining sector can be most effective for the environment and more cost-efficient for public authorities and commercial operators. The project first defined environmental, socio-economic, societal, and sustainable development indicators and criteria that can possibly be dealt with using EO techniques. After an analysis of policies related to the environmental and social footprint of mineral industries, project expertise and stakeholder interviews (national and on-site) as well as site investigations led to the establishment of a list of indicators to be monitored, either directly or indirectly, through accessible parameters. Development of EO-based monitoring tools is then carried out over three demonstration sites: the lignite open pit of Sokolov in Czech Republic, the Mpumalanga coalfield centred on the town of Emalahleni (previously Witbank) in South Africa, and the Makmal gold mine in Kyrgyzstan. From these developments, it is subsequently intended to contribute to the development of generic, standardised EO data integration schemes, in particular in view of characterising affected ecosystems, populations, and societies and prepare indisputable documents that will make the basis for a sound ?trialogue? between industry, governmental organisations, and stakeholders. This paper discusses results obtained after three years into the project, focusing on product development over the demonstration sites and their relevance to the observation and monitoring of environmental and societal footprints of the extractive industry.

Accurate ore blending necessitates an in-depth understanding of movement trajectories of fragments and the spatial evolution of the displacement field in the bench during blasting, Accurate ore blending is currently one of the most complex challenges faced by mining engineers. In light of this problem, a systematic study was conducted in this paper using neural network and numerical simulation based on field monitoring data. A nonlinear mapping relationship was established between the mechanical parameters of rock mass and the displacements of the monitoring points. The measured displacements of monitoring points under blasting were input into the neural network, which used back-calculation to derive the mechanical properties of the rock mass. These parameters were then applied in a forward calculation to analyze the movement trajectory of the monitoring points. The results showed that the calculated displacements were in good agreement with the monitoring results during the. The average relative errors in the horizontal and vertical displacements were 4.12% and 15.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the muckpile profile was in an inverted recumbent “S” shape after bench blasting, which was consistent with the actual shape of the muckpile. This verified the rationality and accuracy of the method proposed in this study. Finally, the movement trajectories of particles in the bench and the spatial evolution law of the displacement field during bench blasting were determined based on the calculation results, offering theoretical support and fundamental information for accurate ore blending.

The Tessenderlo-Kerley Leach process has been shown to be effective in the removal of residual copper from molybdenite concentrates. Concentrates of varying mineralogy, including those containing relatively large amounts of chalcopyrite, have been successfully leached on laboratory and pilot plant scales. The lixiviant system is ammonia and ammonium bisulfite with air / oxygen addition. An abrasive is added which greatly enhances the kinetics, and it is subsequently screened out and reused. The dissolved copper is easily recovered using existing technology. Extraction profiles, reagent consumptions, and mineralogical data are presented.

This paper deals with an experimental programme carried out with a gold analyser in the period June to September 1979 at Loraine Gold Mines. The results were found to be reproducible, with no overall or conditional bias when the measurements were compared with those obtained from chip samples. The standard error of estimation of a 3 m reef exposure, which was the sampling interval, can be reduced by a factor of 2,5 if the complete stretch is scanned, rather than the taking of one chip sample in its centre. Complete statistical and computational procedures were developed for the fitting of the normal-Iognormal model to observed analyser data and for the determination of the most likely gold grade for a particular analyser measurement. (This corection procedure is necessary since a significant number of negative analyser measurements can be observed.) Panel averages of uncorrected scans showed a small conditional bias relative to those of corrected scans. However, uncorrected panel averages can be used for on-the-spot decisions regarding whole panels. For standard calculations of ore reserves, use should be made of corrected scans. Under reasonable assumptions, the use of the detector in the selective mining of low-grade narrow reefs such as the Basal Reef at Loraine Gold Mines, when compared with the conventional chip-sampling method, can result in a saving of as high as R40 million in present-money terms over the life of a project. The difference could be even larger in a highly variable reef like the B Reef at Loraine Gold Mines.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a hardness of less than 180 pmts per million (ppm) in the northwestern part and throughout much of the center of the Slate. In most of the rest of the Stale, the aquifer yields water having a hardness greater than 180 ppm and as much is 1,900 ppm. Hardness of ground water is caused by dissolved salts from the geologic formations through which the water passes or by direct pollution. Sometimes pollution may indirectly increase the hardness of ground water by increasing the acid content and thus increasing the solution of calcium and magnesium salts. Water from deep zones of the aquifer lend to he harder than water from more shallow zones. Only the hardness of water from the upper part of the aquifer is shown.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated aqueous electrolysis as a means for reducing lead chloride prepared by ferric chloride leaching of galena concentrate: NaC1 PbS + 2FeC13 ? PbC12 + 2FeC12 + S°. During electrolysis, metal was produced from solid lead chloride in contact with the cathode rather than from lead in solution. Relatively high current densities--up to 300 amp/ft2--were possible when operating in this way. A very simple cell, having a horizontal lead cathode at the bottom and a vertical graphite anode at the top, was employed. Lead chloride crystals, covering the cathode, were converted to metal powder during electrolysis, and chlorine gas or FeCls was produced at the anode, depending on the electrolyte composition. Electrolytes tried included aqueous solutions of HCI, NaCl, NH4Cl, and FeC12-NaC1. Optimum results (96-pct current efficiency, 0.23 kwhr/lb Pb) were obtained with 20 pct HC1 at 25° C, using a current density of 15 amp/ft2 and an electrode spacing of 1 inch. When the current density was increased, the energy requirement increased also but only to 0.41 kwhr/lb at 150 amp/fr3 and 0.58 kwhr/lb at 300 amp/ft2.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the rock burst problem and measures being taken for its alleviation in the deep underground mines of the Coeur d?Alene Mining District in northern Idaho. The geologic features that contribute to rock bursting in that area are discussed and briefly compared with similar features in other burst-prone mining districts throughout the world. Early investigations to understand and control rock bursting are reviewed, and the mechanics of bursting are discussed in terms of the seismic events that produce them. Sources of strain energy, rock failure mechanisms, and the conditions necessary for the release of seismic energy are covered in detail. Rock burst research in the Coeur d'Alene District is described. Included are discussions of the microseismic method as both a research tool and as a rock burst monitoring system, rock destress blasting and preconditioning methods for rock burst control, and stoping methods currently being developed to reduce rock burst hazards.

"Stoppings in coal mines serve, important and. vital functions, such as coursing the ventilating current, sealing off abandoned or dangerous workings, sealing fire areas, and separating mines at boundaries. Stoppings may hold back water, but normally that is not their function; their design is, or should be very different from that of a hydraulic dap which is designed to a definite load, often a very heavy one, from one direction over an indefinitely long period. Hence, a dam usually requires an arched structure to resist hydraulic pressure, and it must be massive to meet vertical stresses due to heavy ground pressure.Stoppings are designed primarily to resist a pressure applied laterally through air or gases. Their strength cannot be stated without specifying the direction of applied load. A stopping may be placed in stress by proof pressure subsequent to erection, through extraction of pillars in the vicinity which may act direct, or by squeezing the ribs or heaving the floor. These forces act more or less parallel to the faces of the stopping and may be very great but measures must be taken suitable to each case, and it is impossible to allow for these in general specifications other than to call for normally good construction. A stopping is principally designed to resist the action of forces at right angles to its face, such as the shocks of blasting, the pressure of gas from instantaneous violent out bursts such as have occurred in certain British Columbia coal mines, sudden compression of the air by great falls of roof in closed spaces, and at time pressures that accompany an explosion of either fire damp or coal dust or both. This paper deals with the tests of pressures of explosions only."

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

The fire end explosion hazard of excessive coal-dust deposits in mines has been recognized for many years, and important measures have been developed for reducing dust formation and to alley loose dust near its source. Nevertheless, in the course of normal mining it has been estimated that 1 to 3 percent (in some thin, friable seams up to 10 percent) of the total coal mined is reduced to dust of through-20-mesh fineness. In highly mechanized, continuous mining operations the production of fines is even greater. Most dust is trapped near its point of origin and removed from the mine, but large quantities are transported by the air current and by haulage into entries, where the greatest proportion settles on the floor and the balance on the rib and roof surfaces. The latter is generally finer in particle size than the floor dust; this, coupled with its more advantageous position for dispersion, makes the rib-roof dust (also to be referred to as overhead dust) a greater potential explosion hazard.

Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a lS00 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.S ft.) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (l5 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.S tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

Development of a process for winning copper from pelletized chalcocite concentrate without matte smelting and converting is underway at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center, Bureau of Mines. The new route from concentrate to metal includes 2-stage fluid-bed treatment; pelletized concentrate (33 percent Cu, 7 percent S) is first desulfurized (to about 0.5 percent S) in an oxidizing atmosphere, and in the second stage the calcine is metallized by reduction with hydrogen. Thereafter, the reduced product plus 10 percent CaO is routed to a smelting furnace to separate metallic copper from the gangue. Recovery and the Cu content of the product at this point are in the 97-98 percent range. The metal must be refined to remove sulfur and iron to make wirebar copper. An important feature of the process is the pelletizing of the fine concentrate into mini-pellets prior to fluid-bed treatment, which has permitted shorter reaction time, decreased dusting, and facilitated subsequent processing.

The depressing effects of different inorganic chemicals on the flotation of pyrite have been investigated in this study. The results of the flotation tests indicate that pyrite can be depressed by oxidizing as well as reducing agents under controlled conditions of pH and reagent dosage. Oxidizing reagents such as potassium chromate and potassium dichromate were found to cause complete depression of pyrite in the acidic pH range. These effects are similar to those obtained in the pyrite-cyanide system. A less stable oxidant, potassium permanganate, inhibited the flotation of pyrite at a concentration as low as 0.1 mol/L at all pH values, Addition of reducing chemicals such as ferrous chloride or manganous sulphate to the flotation of pyrite were found to produce depressing effects depending on the additive concentration and pH of the solution.
