The Purification of Low-Grade Quartz Ore by Flotation and its Mechanism

Laboratory studies were made to produce whiskers of tungsten over a wide range of operating temperatures. Hydrogen reduction of tungsten hexachloride in a vacuum furnace at temperatures from 2,7000 to 3,3000 C yielded a small quantity of tungsten whiskers, provided a low degree of supersaturation was maintained. Direct measurements of 3,000,000 to 4,000,000 psi were obtained for the ultimate tensile strengths of individual whiskers averaging 3 to 4 microns in diameter with average aspect ratios of 1,000. This compares with strengths of 300,000 to 400,000 psi for 13-micron-diameter commercial filaments.

6.1 INTRODUCTION A surface structure will suffer damage when the additional stresses induced by ground deformations associated with surface subsidence, plus the original stress introduced by construction de¬sign, exceed the strength of the structural elements. In this con¬text, there are two methods available for preventing and control¬ling surface structural damage: one is to strengthen the structure and the other is to design the mining operations such that ground deformations at the structure site can be reduced to an acceptable level. Mining operations include panel layout and mining tech¬niques. These methods are detailed in this chapter. It must be noted that most prevention/control methods men¬tioned in this chapter are used in the countries where the reference papers are cited. In the United States, the coal operators are not required to take those measures mentioned in this chapter. Some of the methods described in this chapter cannot be implemented with¬out changes in the current mining practice as permitted by laws. In addition cost of implementing those methods are not considered here. 6.2 PANEL LAYOUT As shown in Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11, permanent ground deformations in a subsidence basin mainly concentrate near the edges of the underground opening, and can be divided into four zones. A structure located in different zones will be subjected to different types and magnitudes of ground deformations. In laying out the panels, Table 5.1 and Figs. 2.9, 2.10, and 2.11 could be taken into consideration. Attempts could be made to avoid placing the structure on a location where the ground deformation to which that structure is sensitive is at its maximum. Therefore rational design of the panel is the simplest way to reduce structural defor¬mations. Panel design involves the determination of panel dimension, panel edge location, direction of face advance, and use of yield chain pillars. A. Panel Dimension Since longwalls in the US employ a multiple-entry system, where rows of chain pillars are left unmined, subsidence over those chain pillars is usually smaller. Therefore, whenever possi¬ble, the panel dimension could be designed such that a major structure or structures are over those unmined chain pillars, be¬tween adjacent panels, or some distance beyond both ends of the panels. At the center of the supercritical final subsidence basin, a structure will not be subjected to any final or permanent ground deformations. In order to create such a condition, the panel width must be such that the structure will be located beyond the major influence zone of the final subsidence basin, the minimum dimen¬sion of which must be: [ ] where L is the width or length of the final mined out gob, t is the width or length of the structure to be protected, h is mining depth and [ ] s is the angle of full subsidence. B. Panel Edge Location Wherever there is a permanent panel edge, there are large ground deformations induced on the surface on both sides of the permanent panel edge. Therefore whenever possible the panel di¬mension should be designed such that the permanent panel edges could be located in the areas with the least impacts. In terms of permanent edge location, it is best to eliminate any permanent panel edge under a structure or groups of structures. If this cannot be done, the panel should be lengthened to reduce the number of permanent panel edges, or narrower multiple panels advancing in the same direction in a staggered manner could be employed. If the structures are located in Zones II and III, the longer dimension of the structure must be parallel to the nearest perma¬nent edge (Fig. 6.1). But in Zone IV, the longer dimension should be tangential to the corner of the permanent panel edge. If the structure is inclined to the permanent panel edge, it will be sub¬jected to twisting and shearing. C. Direction of Face Advance The direction of face advance should be parallel to the long axis of the structure. But if the structure is to be located at or close to the center of the final subsidence basin, the direction of face advance should be perpendicular to the long axis of the structure. Careful choice of the direction of multiple face advance is the most effective way to reduce structural deformation and thus dam¬age. This applies the principle of overlapping and cancellations of ground deformations, due to multiple face advance, at the right time and at the right intensity, e.g., opposing tilts, concave and convex curvatures, tensile and compressive strains are induced simultaneously on the structure to be protected by two or more faces. D. Use of Yield Chain Pillars In US longwall panels there are generally two or three rows of stiff chain pillars between the panels. The combined width of the chain pillars ranges from 100 to 350 ft(30 to 107m). depending on mining depth. In general, surface movement above the chain pil¬lars after the panels on both sides have been extracted is much smaller, as compared to that in panel center. Thus in order to create critical or supercritical width of opening and eliminate sur¬face bumps over the chain pillars, yield chain pillars may be em¬ployed (Jarosz and Karmis, 1986). However if yield pillars are to be used, it must be designed such that it yields totally right after the panels on both sides have been extracted. Unfortunately cur¬rent yield pillar design techniques cannot predict when and how much it will yield. In summary, whenever possible attempts could be made to lay out the panel in such a way that surface structures are located above chain pillars between panels or above solid coal beyond both ends of the panels. In those areas the surface structures will most likely be unaffected, or if affected, the damage is so minor that no remedial measures are necessary. 6.3 CONTROLLED MINING TECHNIQUES Several mining techniques are available for reducing the sur¬face ground deformations of specific types. Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile, and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geo-statistical simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allows a procedure for classification that maximizes expected profit. Geostatistical simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator, or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally-probable, realizations of the mineral grade(s). At each location, for each realization, we calculate the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a Maximum Profit Se-lection (MPS) procedure). We discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, is considered. We also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. We show the geostatistical simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig-limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. We compare the results of the proposed method to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

"INTRODUCTIONEpidemiologic studies of workers in chromate-ore related industries, 1-3 and stainless steel welding and related occupations4 have shown that they have about 20-40 times higher risk of throat or respiratory track cancer than controls. Although the actual carcinogenic substances were not identified in these statistical studies, Cr(VI) compounds (for example, calcium chromate, zinc chromate, and lead chromate) were implicated as the causative agents, whereas Cr(III) compounds were not suspected as carcinogens. s These suggestions were supporte4 by laboratory studies wherein many Cr(VI) compounds produced sarcomas at the implant or injection sites.1,5 Squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas closely resembling human lung cancer were induced by intrabronchial implants of calcium chromate in rats, 6·7 whereas Cr(DI) oxide and Cr(lll) sulfate did not induce any tumor formation.6,7While the mechanism of the chromate-induced carcinogenicity is not fully understood, it is generally thought8 that it involves some damage to DNA. Specifically, it has been reported that: a) the chromate ion, henceforth referred to as chromate, can pass through the cell membrane and enter the cell while CR(DI) does not, 9 b) chromate does not interact with either native or denatured DNA 10 while Cr(III) does, 11 and c) the final Cr-DNA complex isolated from cellular reactions of chromate is Cr(III)-DNA, with Cr(III) binding to the phosphate groups.12,13 Thus the important question is: since Cr(DI) cannot pass through the membranes, how does Cr(III)-DNA complex form? For this to happen, Cr(VI) must be reduced to its lower oxidation states, 14 ultimately to Cr(III), by some reductants in the cellular environment. Unless this reduction occurs, the DNA would not be damaged and therefore no chromate carcinogenicity would ensue. Thus the reduction of chromate to its lower oxidation states seems to be a key step in the chromate carcinogenicity .1s One of the major reductants in cellular environments is thought to be glutathione (GSH), both outside and inside the cells.16-lB Some evidence for the role of GSH in the chromate toxicity was provided by recent studies showing that exposure of hamster cells to non-toxic levels of added selemite increases the levels of GSH as well as the Cr(VI)-induced DNA strand breaks,19 and that such DNA strand breaks in hepatocytes also change in direct proportion to the GSH content. 20,21 These observations were interpreted as implying that the reduction of chromate by GSH to some reactive intennediate is an important step in the chromate carcinogenicity. 20.21 In · the present undenaking22 we have used electron spin resonance (ESR) and spin-trap methodology to investigate the reduction of chromate by GSH and find evidence for the involvement of the glutathionyl radical (GS ·) as well as Cr(V)-intermediates."

An investigation was carried out to determine the variables affecting the coiling temperature of strip in the 56-in. hot strip mill. After statistical treatment, equations have been derived to determine the temperature drop between mill and coiler for both full spray (top and bottom) and top spray only practices. The individual influences of each variable in the temperature drop were derived for both practices. Limitations of the present practices were shown and adjustments in cooling for increased rolling speeds were suggested. A method of estimating the required number of sprays, their spacing, pressure, etc., to achieve a desired temperature drop is developed. MAXIMUM finishing temperature of a hot strip mill is mainly determined by the rolling speed, gage, and the temperature of the bar entering the mill. This finishing temperature may be limited by the maximum admissible coiling temperature in cases when either the cooling facilities on the runout table are not adequate or, more generally, when the cooling capacity of the runout table and the production capacity of the continuous mill are out of balance. Some time ago, the balance between these two factors was not considered detrimental to production. Recently, a new drafting schedule was introduced which increased the production rate, the entry temperature, and hence the finishing temperature. Thus, the restriction of the maximum specified coiling temperature became an important factor for many of the thicker gages. An investigation of the factors determining the coiling temperature may be, therefore, of considerable importance. A brief description of the available equipment will be a useful illustration of the techniques and methods used for this investigation. The 56 in. continuous hot strip mill is composed of six 4-high stands each containing two 221/2-in. diam work rolls and two 45-in. diam back-up rolls. Either of the last two stands can be used as the finishing stand. Which stand is used is dependent on the total percentage of reduction to be taken over the whole train, i.e., on the entry thickness and the final gage. The characteristics of these last two stands are given in Table I. Table I. THE fact that little if anything has appeared in the technical press or in the Transactions of the Institute on the subject of roll shells proper, used in various grinding appliances such as Cornish rolls or Chilean mills, may be taken as an incentive, if not an excuse, for the present article. No attempt is made to enter into a. discussion as to the theory or mathematics of crushing as performed by rolls, the subject being treated in a general way with respect to the manufacture of roll shells 'and some salient points touching on their adaptability and wear in service. While it stands to reason that skill coupled with judgment in the mechanical design of rolls, Chilean mills or other types of grinding machinery, with special reference to strength of parts, nicety of adjustment and other mechanical features, stand for efficiency in their operation .and satisfaction in service, the exceedingly important item. of roll shells or other wearing parts entering into their construction should not be lost sight of. In other words, a well-designed piece of grinding machinery is just as inefficient in service, when equipped with poor roll shells or shells made of the wrong or an inferior grade of metal, as good roll shells made according to the best practice the steel maker knows, working on an old or antiquated set of rolls. Unfortunately there is a tendency occasionally for the machinery builder to blame the steel maker or vice versa if roll shells do not wear well or evenly, or if they break before being worn down to their ultimate thin point. There is no occasion for this attitude, as the product, of each must stand on its own merits. But it is essential that the two work in harmony since the machinery builder usually does not furnish the shells for his rolls or grinding mills, but depends on the steel maker, who makes a specialty of this rolled product, to give the particular needed element of efficiency to his machine.

The results of using a simple analytical solution and a relatively complex numerical model to estimate ground-water inflow to an open pit mine are compared. The analytical solution assumes lateral, radial flow to a fully penetrating pit in an idealized confined aquifer, whereas the numerical model simulates fully three-dimensional flow to a partially penetrating pit from a water table aquifer. The latter is obviously a more realistic simulation of the problem, but the former method is significantly easier to use, Comparison of the results obtained with the two methods for some typical hydrogeologic conditions encountered in mining yields ratios between them in the range of 0.15 to 0.60. These values can be used as a coefficient in the Pit Flow analytical solution to produce reasonable estimates of in-flow even when there are significant differences from the idealized conditions implicit in its application.

"The article describes the analysis of methods and criteria of selectivity of optimal ore preparation schemes. Traditional criteria based on study of physical-mechanical properties of ores give the comparison of obtained figures with a reference standard or statistic data and the selection of the ore preparation scheme is made on a basis of a similar scheme from the existing production.Further on estimation is given to different criteria of the crushing selectivity, the new criterion is offered, the definition of which is done by results of an optical microscopy– the estimation of a valuable mineral release degree. The final estimation of the crushing process selectivity L? is performed by a calculation of a ratio of the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a crushed material to the valuable mineral free grains quantity in a desired size grade of a raw product.Besides, optimality assessment of using the specific crushing unit is preliminary performed according to a maximum crushing degree of a material, however, the priority is given to the maximum selectivity criterion. The check of the proposed criterion was done when comparing the crushing of niobium bearing ores of the Vishnevogorskoye deposit in cone inertial and centrifugal impact crushers. Different operation modes of crushers were also checked. The comparison of the crushing selectivity criterion L? showed that the centrifugal impact crusher (CC) has the value of the selectivity criterion lower than the cone inertial crusher (CIC). For the crusher CC the criterion L? is 0.82 – 0.87 units, whereas for the crusher CIC – 1.43-1.755 units. The best crushing mode for the crusher CIC-300? is as follows: turning angle of debalance is 120°, peripheral speed of a cone rotation – 1,420 rpm, specific energy consumption – 6.99 kW?t/t.INTRODUCTIONIt has been shown that the most efficient techniques of mineral raw materials disintegration are selective crushing enabling to produce liberation of particles at maximum use of destruction techniques by borders of minerals cleavage. These days, such techniques are usually called special disintegration techniques (Jankovic & Valery, 2015), and they are used in 3–4 crushing stages. The selection of optimal crushing techniques is performed based on the following main parameters:- degrees of crushing, calculated based on granulometric features of raw and crushed products;- selectivity criterion defined according to useful mineral release and slime ability degree; and- traditional criteria (Gazaleeva et al., 2015) of choice based on study of physical-mechanicalproperties of ores gives the comparison of obtained figures with a reference standard or statistic data and the selection of the ore preparation scheme is made on a basis of a similar scheme from the existing production."

There is a wide difference of opinion among rifle experts in the matter of barrel steel, and the relative importance to the life of the barrel of the steel's composition, heat treatment, structure, and physical properties. In order to promote discussion, which it is hoped may' lead to the discovery of the source of some of the traditional beliefs on the subject, the results of some tests are presented here, with data on heat treating, physical tests, and erosion. The detailed metallographic study of this steel is given in another paper.l The conclusions from these tests should be capable of wider application than their direct bearing on the barrel-steel problem. The Government specifications for barrel steel for model 1903 rifle (Springfield) call for carbon 0.50 to 0.60 per cent., manganese 1.00 to 1.29 per cent., silicon under 0.25 per cent., sulfur under 0.06 per cent., phosphorus under 0.08 per cent. The minimum physical requirements are: Tensile strength, 110,000 lb. per sq. in. (7733 kg. per sq. cm.); yield point, 75,000 lb. per sq. in (5472 kg. per sq. cm.); elongation, 20 per cent.; reduction of area, 45 per cent. Material fulfilling these requirements gives practically no failures when proof-fired, with charge of 70,000 lb. per sq. in. pressure, which is 40 per cent. in excess of the service charge. The turning and drilling operations show up any seams or laps such as accidentally occur even in the best heats of open-hearth steel, so that faulty stock is practically all eliminated before proof-firing. These physical requirements are met either by rolling billets at a proper temperature down to the form of tapered barrel blanks or by heat treating bars that have been upset to cnlarge the breech section. The transformation temperature of this steel, on heating, is around 1350" F. (732' C.), varying somewhat with the composition and the rate of heating. The actual treatment of the barrel blanks, as carried out by different manufacturers, gives four kinds of barrels, which will be called A, B, C, and D, for convenience. TEN years ago Taggart, Taylor and Ince1 described a workable, convenient apparatus for the measurement of contact angles between cleaved, ground or polished particles and captive bubbles. Wark and Cox2 and Wark and Sutherland3 have done an immense amount of experimental work with this apparatus. Their work has had as principal object the determination of "contact curves." Contact curves are cartesian charts in which pH (or some other variable) is plotted against quantity of modifying agent. The rectangular area is broken into two or more curvilinear areas separated by the contact curve. The curve indicates that a sharp demarcation exists between conditions that bring about sticking of particles to bubbles and conditions that do not produce sticking. The type curve appears in the TRANSACTIONS as Fig. 1, page 248, volume 112. Wark and Cox offer data to show that the contact angle has a value determined by and characteristic of the agent used. Wark and Cox also make the statement that they believe this value is independent of concentration (ref. 2a, p. 209). They say: It is suspected that, given sufficient time and provided that there are no disturbing factors, the full ethyl xanthate angle (corresponding to a complete xanthate film) would be obtained in every case where contact occurs. Such a conclusion, if correct, would tend to substantiate the hypothesis of flotation collection by metathesis championed by Taggart and his associates4-8 and would argue against the adsorption hypothesis now adopted by Wark7 and by one of us.8 However, the data of Wark and Cox do not bear out the conclusion that there is a sharp passage from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. Rather, they indicate the existence of a transition zone of reagent concentration across which the contact angle varies with changes in reagent concentration from zero to a value near the maximum. This may be seen, for example, from Fig. 195 in the new text by one of us (ref. 8, p. 380), which presents the data of Wark and Cox in graphical form. The object of this study has been to explore the nature of the transition from conditions of contact to conditions of noncontact. The data of Wark and Cox to which reference has been made as showing that a gradual transition exists are marred by the fact that the region of critical-agent concentration is at an extremely small concentration. This condition suggests that diffusion may have played such a preponderant role that equilibrium was not reached within the time alloted. In the Wark and Cox data, the critical concentration was at about one part of xanthate per million parts of water. To form a monolayer of xanthate on the mineral surface would therefore require depletion of xanthate in the liquid to a depth of the order of

"The most widely used method for predicting the onset of continuous caving is Laubscher’s caving chart. A detailed examination of this method was undertaken which concluded that it had limitations which may impact on results, particularly when dealing with stronger rock masses that are outside current experience. These limitations relate to inadequate guidelines for adjustment factors to rock mass rating (RMR), concerns about the position on the chart of critical case history data, undocumented changes to the method and an inadequate number of data points to be confident of stability boundaries.A review was undertaken on the application and reliability of a numerical method of assessing cavability. The review highlighted a number of issues, which at this stage, make numerical continuum methods problematic for predicting cavability. This is in particular reference to sensitivity to input parameters that are difficult to determine accurately and mesh dependency.An extended version of the Mathews method for open stope design was developed as an alternative method of predicting the onset of continuous caving. A number of caving case histories were collected and analyzed and a caving boundary delineated statistically on the Mathews stability graph. The definition of the caving boundary was aided by the existence of a large and wide-ranging stability database from non-caving mines. A caving rate model was extrapolated from the extended Mathews stability graph but could only be partially validated due to a lack of reliable data."

SiNcE the gypsum deposits of Nova Scotia have been operated on a large-tonnage basis, it has become increasingly necessary that more study be given to the geological relation of gypsum to anhydrite. It was while attempting to work out some definite system of quarry operation for several operators that the factors relating to hydration as given in this paper became apparent. For convenience the words "the formation" are used to mean anhydrite and gypsum taken together as one bed geologically and forming a distinct unit from the rocks below or above. Also, the word "block" is used geologically to define a portion of the formation that is cut apart and separated by erosion from other portions. The formation is part of the Lower Carboniferous, the remainder of which is made up of red shales and shaly sandstones, coarse red conglomerates and limestones. Overlying the Lower Carboniferous are the even-bedded gray sandstones of the coal measures. To a large extent these sandstones have been eroded from above the formation and the usual cover is clay and unconsolidated sediments. The position of the limestone member which immediately underlies the formation usually furnishes the key to the general structure. Being harder, and subject to less erosion, it has a wider spread than the'formation, and measures for dip read on it have a value which can not be applied to dips taken on gypsum or anhydrite. This limestone usually is not more than 25 ft. deep, but it has a remarkable tenacity—one would almost say elasticity—under strain of earth movements. In many cases it stands as a barrier to the erosion which otherwise would have destroyed completely the remaining block of the formation. No bedded limestone is found within the formation except in narrow seams close to the bottom and in short irregular masses in highly disturbed strata where it has been caught up by fault action. This paper is not concerned with the general theories of original deposition and no opinion is expressed as to whether gypsum or anhydrite was first deposited from evaporating sea water. For purposes of study, and as an observed fact, except in the few cases where there has been extreme disturbance, a block of the formation is regarded as a block of anhydrite which has become partly hydrated into gypsum. 177

The first rule of mineral deposits always seems to be: the deposit is never close to the market. With gems and precious metals, this is not much of a problem. But with most of the mineral commodities used in today's world, transportation becomes a major part of the cost to the consumer. In Japan, for example, more than 60% of the cost of coal to the consumer may be attributed to transportation. The purpose of this article is to examine pipeline transportation, particularly mineral slurry pipelines, as a means of getting the mineral to market. Pipelines Today Regulated pipelines in the US totaled nearly 724 Mm (450,000 miles) in 1980 according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Worldwide, more than 210 Mm (125,000 miles) of new pipelines will start construction in 1982 at an estimated cost of more than $150 billion. According to the Bechtel Corp., the period between 1982 and 2000 will see major growth in pipelines of all kinds. In North America, major movements of crude oil from Alaska and synfuels from the Rocky Mountains will require the construction of nearly 16 Mm (10,000 miles) of new pipelines. Nearly 42 Mm (26,000 miles) of new gas transmission pipelines will be needed to tap both US and Canadian arctic gas fields and move the gas to major markets on both coasts. Other pipelines will be required to move additional quantities of natural gas from the Rocky Mountains to more populous regions. Bechtel says more than 24 Mm (15,000 miles) of slurry pipelines will be needed to transport coal from both eastern and western coal provinces to the Mississippi valley and coastal areas. In 1980, 125 companies delivered more than 1 km3 (6.5 billion bbl) of crude oil and 652 hm3 (4.1 billion bl) of products in the US. At the same time natural gas pipelines transported 498 km3 (17.6 trillion cu ft). The reported investment by these companies was nearly $20 billion at the end of 1980. Advantages of Pipeline Transportation The obvious success and vitality of the oil and gas pipeline industry is based, at least in part, on the fact that pipelines are a very efficient and low-cost method of transportation. This fact, coupled with the need for lower cost trans¬portation, has led to the marriage of oil and gas transmission technology and the bulk mineral solids transportation industry. The off-spring of this marriage is the mineral slurry pipeline. Slurry pipelines have a number of advantages over other transportation methods. One of these is the fact that they are buried-out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Second, they are relatively small users of labor because they lend themselves to automation and remote, or even computer control. Third, they offer an attractive economic alternative to other transportation systems. For example, for a 1000 km (621 miles) distance, rail costs of 1?/ km (1.7?/ton-mile) are about equivalent to slurry pipeline costs. But, as the distance increases, pipeline cost per t-km continues to drop while equivalent rail charges remain essentially insensitive to distance. Where existing rail, barge, or ocean ships are available, the cost of new construction associated with a slurry pipeline probably will render it noncompetitive. However, where new rail or other construction is needed, the cost of a slurry pipeline is very competitive. About three-fourths of the cost of a pipeline is in pipe, fittings, and construction. Nearly a fifth of the investment is in pump stations and the remainder is in right-of-way, surface facilities, utility acquisition, communication facilities, and other support areas. The fact that pipelines are capital intensive is, at the present time, a mixed blessing. For example, the delivered cost of coal in a hypothetical project doubles when the cost of money rises from 9% to 17.5% per year. The largest cost element for delivered coal in this example is in depreciation and finance charges. The next largest cost element is electricity to power the pumps, with labor making up the smallest increment of the delivered cost of coal. World Slurry Pipelines The idea of a slurry pipeline was probably first investigated in the latter 19th century, but the first ones were successfully built and operated in the US in the early 1900s. Today, they are fairly common worldwide. Table 1 shows a number of the world's slurry pipelines. An examination of these will further emphasize the fact that pipelines provide a cost competitive alternative where new construction of a transportation system is required. In each of the examples, the desired mineral commodity is located in a remote corner of the world, markets are at a great distance, value of the commodity is not great, and no other transport system is available.

The undesirable effects of blasting fumes can be controlled by minimising the amount of fume created, and by avoiding the movement of the fume plume to sensitive locations. Substantial progress has been made by the blasting industry to reduce the amount of fume typically created by blasting, but at this time no specific blast can be guaranteed to be ‘fume free’.

A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources. As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence of foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines had conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically-feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. This paper analyzes some of the major difficulties which have been encountered in previously proposed processes for treating low-grade manganese ores and discusses a process which may circumvent many of these difficulties. Vast deposits of low-grade manganese ore exist in the U.S., yet domestic production is insignificant compared to the more than 2 million tons of ore imported yearly into this country.' A basic problem in connection with manganese is to find economical ways to utilize domestic resources.2 As a part of its program to conserve domestic mineral resources and to reduce dependence on foreign sources, the Bureau of Mines has conducted extensive research to broaden manganese technology and to find economical, technically feasible processes for recovering manganese from these low-grade resources. Although a great many processes have been proposed for treating domestic manganese resources, a failing of many of them is that too many steps are involved for economical operation.' Some of the major processes that have been proposed were reviewed by Norman and Kirby.3,4 Chlorination processes have become increasingly useful as a means of recovering valuable metals from raw materials, because the relative cost of chlorine (Cl2) and hydrogen chloride (HC1) has decreased through the years, and because the corrosion resistance of materials of construction has been improved. The objective of these processes is to form metal chlorides that are more volatile or water-soluble than are the corresponding oxides or sulfides; these compounds then can be separated from the gangue or other minerals by volatilization or leaching. Several chlorination processes for the recovery of manganese have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines5-8 and others; the major chlorination processes were reviewed in 1963, and their main features were compared.4 In all these processes, the simultaneous leaching or volatilization of iron chlorides with manganese chloride (MnCl2) is a problem, and the more iron that is present, generally the greater the problem. The leaching step is not highly selective, and the product of this step is, at best, suitable only for the production of ferromanganese or for further processing to remove iron. The product of the volatilization step is, in all cases, a mixture of iron and manganese chlorides that contains too much iron even for ferromanganese production, and must undergo additional processing steps for iron removal. THERMODYNAMIC CONSIDERATIONS The literature indicates that the desired chlorination reactions will proceed at practical rates at temperatures near 1200°K (927°C). Free energy changes at 1200°K for the critical steps of the reduction and chlorination reactions9-11 follow: Most of the research on chlorination processes for manganese recovery has been done with HC1 rather than with C12, for the following three main reasons: 1) Recycling of the chlorinating agent, which is economically vital, appeared to be easier for HC1

The possibilities of the use of ultrasonics in the extraction of gold and silver is the subject of a study initiated in our laboratory since the beginning of 1986. The study consisted of various aspects of extraction, the results of which are in· different stages of advancement. Reduction in leach time combined with higher recovery are the most striking effects so far. The ultrasonics machine, originally part of a small pilot plant, forms now part of a much larger unit. This has the remarkable effect of even higher recoveries and shorter leach times. These data suggested a study on the possibilities of reduction of thiourea consumption. Although promising, the results of these studies require check testing and will be published as soon as our findings have been confirmed. During the study, which consisted of the application in thiourea and cyanide leaching, some interesting side effects were observed. In the first place, a reduction in penetration time which might make coarse grinding feasible. Secondly, an increase in compaction of the filter cake which reduces pregnant liquor losses, especially with clayey ores and industrial waste products. These will be studied under contract in the near future.
