Over the years there have been occasional references in the literature to the activating effect of cyanide in galena flotation with xanthates. These have usually been associated with the processing of lead-zinc or copper-lead-zinc ores. Bubble contact curves for the pure galena-xanthate system show a flotation edge at pH 10.4 independent of sodium cyanide concentration which was thought due to hydroxyl ion, not cyanide ion.Flotation tests were conducted on samples of Mount Isa lead-zinc ore using varying concentrations of sodium ethyl xanthate and sodium cyanide. At low collector concentrations, galena recovery kinetics improved with sodium cyanide addition, and the higher the cyanide concentration, the higher the galena recovery rate. At higher collector concentrations, galena recovery rate was independent of sodium cyanide addition.For a given collector addition, the lead grade-recovery curve shifted to an improved position with increasing sodium cyanide level. For the same recovery there was an increase in the lead grade with increased sodium cyanide addition, and this increase was most dramatic at high sodium cyanide concentrations.The presence of sodium cyanide during the grinding of Mount Isa ore caused surface passivation of the iron sulphides and possibly the sphalerite.These sulphides, therefore, reacted with less of the oxygen present in the pulp, hence more oxygen was directed to the surface of the galena. This resulted in an enhancement in the total amount of xanthate adsorbed on the galena that is reflected in the improved flotation response of that mineral.

DAME Nature was in a generous mood when she distributed widely over the face of the globe numerous deposits of phosphate rock from which man can make phosphatic festiIizer to replace the phosphate re- moved from the soil by crops. The principal deposits are readily accessible to the world's greatest consuming areas and most of them are such that mining operations can be carried on at relatively low cost. The world's known reserves shown in Table 1 are sufficient to last well over 2000 gears at the present rate of consumption. Before giving a brief outline of the phosphate rock industry of foreign countries let us try to get a picture of the movement of phosphate rock throughout the world in 1938, the last full normal calendar year where it came from and where it was consumed. Table 2 shows the origin and finial destination of world shipments in 1938 by grand divisions. Table 3 (p. 499) shows shipment9 of phosphte rock to each country in Europe. Europe is seen to be by far the world's greatest market and the French North African mines the world's most important producers outside of the U. S. A.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on electrowinning of neodymium metal by using a molten-metal cathode at 650° C and an electrolyte of 50 mol pct NdCl3 (neodymium chloride) and 50 mol pct KCI (potassium chloride). The molten-metal cathodes were alloys of magnesium and zinc or magnesium and cadmium. Current efficiencies were 90 pct with a Mg-Zn cathode and 80 pct with a Mg-Cd cathode; The Mg-Cd cathode was easily separated from the electrolyte. In contrast, the Mg-Zn cathode tended to mix with the electrolyte, making separation difficult. The cathode metals were separated from the neodymium by distillation at 1,100° C under a vacuum of 10-3 torr. Neodymium metal of 99.9+ purity was recovered from the Mg-Cd alloy cathode after 30 min distillation time. The neodymium recovered from the Mg-Zn system contained almost 2 pct Zn after vacuum distillation. Continuous operation using the Mg-Cd alloy cathode was demonstrated.

Geophysical explosive charges are used in mineral resource exploration. They are detonated subsurface and radiate sonic waves into ground monitors, which detect the vibration waves and their interaction with underlying geologic strata. Geophysicists perform computer analyses of the waves reflected from the strata to determine their depth and thickness (Strobel, Berger & Schaefer, 2012). The purpose of this research is to determine how the detonating explosive charge interacts with the adjacent ground and how the induced waves propagate through the surrounding medium. Furthermore, it is necessary to optimize the location of the initiation point within the charge. Establishing both the direction and intensity of the waves will allow geoscientists to refine and optimize geophysical studies that employ explosive charges.

"Smelting of scrap copper and residual anodes and cathodes carried out in a reverberatory type furnace. In this, deoxidation process is carried out by wood, which acts as a resource of reduction gases such carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane. Use of wood causes the formation of soot pollutants and efficiency of oxygen removal from copper is low leading to added costs in removing contaminants. This expensive problem was solved by using of reformed natural gas as a source of reduction gases (CO+ H2).IntroductionThree reverberatory furnaces were used for smelting of scrap copper and residual anodes and cathodes. Each furnace had a 7tpd capacity and was operated at 1183 °C.In this furnace, Step1-compressed air supplied by tubes from the side of the furnace to remove sulfur from copper matte by oxidation .The copper is also oxidized to copper oxide .[1]Step 2- copper from matte is deoxidized by a reductant. Typically deoxidation process is carried out using wood as a resource of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane which are the reduction gases. Use of wood causes the following:1- Forms soot pollutants2- Oxygen removal efficiency from copper is low; more contamination in copper matte increased energy in deoxidation3-the process is highly expensive.In the recent trends, this problem has been solved by using reformed natural gas as a source of reduction gases (CO+ H) .This results in 1-Reduced pollution during smelting.2- High efficiency in the removal of oxygen from copper to produce oxygen free copper. The surface of copper produced from this method is smooth which helps in forming and machining.3- Low cost and natural gas is more readily available in Egypt than wood."

The transient one-dimensional heat-conduction equation is solved for two semi-infinite media, at different initial temperatures, brought into (poor) thermal contact. It is shown that the two interface temperatures gradually approach the well-known, instantaneously assumed, common interface temperature of the case of zero contact resistance. The present analysis, with slight modifications, may be used in fair approximation also for the class of problems involving a change of phase. One particular application of the boundary value problem solved in this paper concerns the determination of the temerature distribution in metal castings and molds.P This problem has been treated extensively by analytical methods (see e.g., the literature listed in Refs. 1 to 4) by electrical analogs (see e.g., Refs. 11 to 14) and also by experimental methods (see the literature listed in Refs. 4, 5), but prior to the work of Pellini and Ruddle the experimental results were rather unreliable. Immediate motivation for the work described in this paper was to better understand the results of Pellini,' which are typified by the curves of Fig. 1. Pellini cast 20-in. high, 7-in. sq steel ingots into cast-iron molds of various thicknesses. He measured the temperatures at mid-height, at a number of stations in the casting and the mold, and obtained the cooling curves shown in Fig. 1. The most conspicuous thing about Fig. 1 is the large temperature discontinuity at the interface between casting and mold, due presumably to the shrinking away of the casting from the wall and the attendant creation of an airgap, as the casting cools. Such a contact resistance slows down the anticipated freezing rate; an analytical prediction of this is of much interest in foundry practice. The determination of the effect of contact resistance in the presence of a change of phase will be dealt with, by an approximate method, in a separate paper.' In the present paper the much simpler problem is considered in which there is contact resistance but no change of phase. This problem frequently arises in the analysis of aircraft structures.+ It can initial temperature, and may be regarded as semi-infinite. We suppose the thermal properties in the two media to be time, temperature, and space independent; there are no sources or sinks within the media. In Fig. 2(a) we illustrate, schematically, the case of no contact resistance. The semi-infinite media "0" and "2:' initially at temperatures 8 (- m) and 8(+ -), respectively, are brought into contact at time t =0. A common interface temperature 8,i = is instantaneously established, and thereafter remains constant. Temperature curves are drawn for three instants of time. When there is contact resistance between the two media, the temperature equalization occurs as sketched in Fig. 2(b). Fig. 2(c) illustrates a temperature curve, using the dimension-less notation Barber-Weiner-Boley6 have stated the equations [23a, b] given below, which govern the heat transfer in the two media, and solved them for a rather complicated special case. In their example both media "O" and "2" are finite, are insulated at their far ends, and there is steady heat input into medium 2. In Eq. [27] we give the general solution of the most important special case, where the two media are semi-infinite and there are no sources or sinks. In this case the results may be stated in simple closed form. In Fig. 3, to be discussed in the next section, we illustrate the variation of the interface temperature when steel at 2760" is brought into contact with iron at 100". This example, if we disregard the effect of the heat of fusion, is comparable to Pellini's experimental results, Fig. 1. (Unfortunately, however, experimental determination of the interface temperatures was difficult to carry out, and hence Fig. 1 is not very accurate near the interface.) In Figs. 4 and 5 of the following section, we similarly compare Pellini's sandcasting tests with analytical results for the case where steel at 2760" is brought into contact with sand at 100". It will be pointed out that, insofar as the interface temperatures are concerned, heat of fusion has a minor effect, and so the present approximation, with small modifications, may be

Safe electrical operation of shuttle cars depends upon maintaining the trailing cable's conductor temperature below 90° C. However, trailing cables are wound on and off reels, which changes the heat transfer characteristics of the cable-reel system. Derating factors for trailing cables are an attempt to adjust for this changing heat transfer mechanism in a practical way. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine acceptable derating factors for reeled mine trailing cables, using four cable-reel combinations, representative of industry usage. Cables were continuously and intermittently loaded at different duty cycles with direct currents of different magnitudes. Relationships between the average temperature rise and current load were established for each layer of each cable. Two models were constructed; one used empirical data from the continuous and intermittent load tests, and the other was based on thermodynamic theory. Results obtained from the theoretical model were compared with those from the empirical model for the rated temperature rise of the cable. Both models can be used to simulate a variety of test conditions including those that normally cannot be conducted in the laboratory. This information was used to determine acceptable derating factors for each layer of these cable-reel combinations.

INTRODUCTION The placement of concrete by means of pumping is one of the fastest growing practices in the construction industry and is widely used in mining applications. In¬troduced in the United States in 1933, this method has been adapted to many aspects of the industry, especially where space for equipment is either limited or inaccessi¬ble. Concrete pumping offers many advantages over other methods of placement. Using pumping equipment, the concrete mixture can be transported in a single operation from a central mixing site to numerous forms in many remote locations, eliminating the need for rehandling the mixture and reducing the labor costs to a minimum. Pressurized pumping provides an extra mix¬ing and blending step, resulting in concrete of improved uniformity and greater density. In turn, this produces high compressive strength and increased durability. Various placement defects can be reduced or pre¬vented by pumping. The steady and even flow of the concrete minimizes the form distortion and delays caused by vibration problems that are common to fast dumping of the concrete mixes. Segregation, planes of weakness, bleeding, and surface faults are diminished considerably. Perhaps the greatest advantages of concrete pump¬ing are the distances and volumes that can be handled. Depending upon the equipment used, pumping rates of from 8 to 115 m'j/h (10 to 150 cu yd per hr) can be achieved, with a horizontal range of up to 460 m (1500 ft) and a vertical range of up to 140 m (450 ft). Theoretically, almost any concrete mixture could be pumped. However, consistency is an important consid¬eration for efficient operation. Mixes that are too wet, too dry, too hard, or poorly graded can cause difficulties that increase the costs. Similarly, mixes containing aggregate material that is over the maximum size or that is porous and highly absorptive can also result in diffi¬culties and increased costs. For the best efficiency, the mix formulation must have a well-graded sand and aggregate combination, with enough fines to provide flowability. If additional water is required for pumping, additional cement must be used to meet the design criteria of the structure. Each pump manufacturer can provide recommended mix formulations for the specific equipment furnished. Since the 1950s, many improvements have been made in pumping technology. Originally, only rigid steel pipe of 168 to 245 mm (6.625 to 9.625 in.) diam was used; today, both rigid steel pipe and flexible conduit are available in diameters of from 76 to 203 mm (3.0 to 8.0 in.). Improved pumps have been developed, and the introduction of power-coordinated booms has in¬creased the versatility of concrete pumping. The older and more conventional placement methods can no longer compete with the flexibility, efficiency, and econ¬omy of the pumping method, and continued research and development can only improve the system and expand its use throughout the mining industry. PUMPING EQUIPMENT The three major types of concrete pumping units currently available are the piston pumps, the pneumatic pumps, and the squeeze-type pumps. Table I provides a comparison of capacities, horizontal ranges, and vertical ranges for pumps of all three types. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publications Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. If there is any problem in producing formulae accurately by typewriter they should be inserted by handwriting in ink in the copy forwarded by authors. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systeme International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1952 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 94 samples of aviation gasoline which include, for the first time in this series of reports, data on five samples of grade 108/135 aviation fuel. Data also are given for 34 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers? production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

"The first recorded discovery of placer gold in Canada was on the Chaudiere River in Quebec's eastern townships in 1832 and the first major production came from placer deposits in British Columbia in 1858 (Verity 1974). Placer deposits were the major source of gold until the late 1890's, although lode deposits were found in Nova Scotia in 1862. In 1896 the Klondike Gold Rush commenced with the discovery of gold by Henderson and Carmack in the Yukon. The peak was reached in 1900 when over one million ounces of gold valued at approximately $22.3 million were recovered. With the exhaustion of the easily accessible deposits, more capital intensive operations were necessary such as those initiated in 1906 by the Yukon Gold Corporation. This giant dredging operation continued to produce until 1966. Today only a few small operations remain.The development of Canadian lode gold mining began in earnest around 1900 when the railroads were opening up the interior and western part of the country. At this time many discoveries occurred, particularly where mineral outcroppings were near surface. Tremendous impetus for exploration and the reopening of former producers followed the elimination of the gold standard by Great Britain around 1931, and more importantly the United States in 1933, with subsequent stabilization of the price of gold at $35 per ounce in 1934. Prior to this the price of gold was basically unchanged since 1717, approximately, $20 per ounce (Verity, 1974; Green, 1973).The depression of the 1930s adversely affected most industries, however for the gold producers it was a very profitable time. Prices of materials and equipment declined and labour was cheap and plentiful. Interest in gold mining was further stimulated in 1936 when a three year tax exemption was declared for all new metal mines. In 1938 a decline in the value of the Canadian dollar relative to the U.S. dollar benefitted the industry. The second world war provided yet again further incentive for gold production and in 1941 Canadian gold production reached a high of approximately 5.4 million ounces. This figure was not surpassed until 1991 when approximately 5.6 million ounces were produced (Natural Resources Canada, 1996 )."

The Freeport-McMoRan Main Pass Mine development in the Gulf of Mexico is a complex designed to extract up to 67 million long tons of sulphur over a 40 year period. The initial development includes 15 platforms and 13 bridges located in water depths ranging from 208 to 214 feet, approximately 15 miles east of the Mississippi River Delta. Three additional platforms were designed and installed for the oil and gas development in the complex. Over 110, 000 short tons of steel were required to fabricate the structures. As the sulphur is extracted significant subsidence is predicted over a major portion of complex in the shape of a very large bowl. Vertical elevations are predicted to change as much as 65 feet. Horizontal movements and mudline slope changes cause adjacent platform decks to move as much as 30 feet relative to each other. Differential soil movement is predicted between piling of individual platforms causing the piling to spread, resulting in significant lateral loading on the piling. Relative vertical soil movements are predicted along the lengths of the piles which causes "up drag" or "down drag" forces on individual piles. This paper addresses the design of the piling for the structures in the complex. Design criteria will be discussed explaining how the more traditional offshore environmental and gravity loadings were combined with the unique loading caused by subsidence. Design and analysis procedures will be explained and analysis results presented. These results include the incorporation of 100 ksi steel in thicknesses up to 5 inches in some of the tubular piles. Comparisons will be made between conventional offshore structures and these structures designed to accommodate the subsidence.

Underground production of coal by longwall methods has increased significantly in the last few years and will very likely continue to: increase. There are several reasons for this. First, as mining moves into seams having greater overburden, roof exposure must be reduced since support will become' increasingly expensive. Secondly, the growing demand for coal has forced the coal industry to seek alternative, more productive, coal mining methods. In addition, the longwall method greatly simplifies the underground ventilation network. This paper addresses itself to the design of longwall development headings, particularly to those of the United States where multiple development headings are required by law. The most burdensome problem encountered in many longwall mining installations is deterioration of the tailgate due to the combined effect from, the active longwall gob and the old gob made by mining the previous panel.1 Portions of the tailgate entry are sometimes closed to such a degree that extensive repair work is necessary to keep the entry in usable condition. The purpose of this paper is to present the result of a study in progress which combines field measurements with numerical model analysis to reduce the cost of maintaining tailgate entries in longwall mining systems.

Incorporating these elements in the project development process will assist in resource allocation and focus on the high value aspects of projects and alternatives during the early stages of the project development lifecycle. THE conductivity of copper wire is of prime importance to the electrical industry and consequently to the copper refiner and wire manufacturer. Annealed copper wire has a higher conductivity than hard-drawn wire, but, on the other hand, its tensile strength is lower. In an attempt to explain the reasons for these changes in property or at least to study the conditions existing in these two types of copper wire, the experiments described here were carried on in the Department of Metallurgy of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. This is only a partial and preliminary report on some of the work done to date on a research program of which the object is an intensive study of copper. It is offered with the hope that, though it is not an exposition of the most rigorous of conclusions, the general trend of inferences which may be drawn will be of value and interest.

In China, the total reserves of vanadium, reported as V2O5, in stone coal is 118 Mt (130 million st). Recovering vanadium from such a large resource is very important to China?s vanadium industry. The technology now being used to recover vanadium from stone coal has the following two problems in the leaching process: a low recovery of vanadium and high acid consumption. To resolve these problems, a new leaching technology is proposed. The effects of factors such as H2SO4 concentration, liquid-solid ratio, temperature and time, and the types and additions of additives were studied. By adding 1.5% (by weight) CaF2 and leaching the roasted residue of stone coal with 5.4% (by weight) sulfuric acid at 90°C for 12 hours at a liquid-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, the leaching degree of vanadium reached 83.10%. This proposed leaching technology gives a feasible alternative for the processing of roasting residue of stone coal and can be applied in the comprehensive utilization of stone coal ores in China.

The gradual depletion of high-grade sulphide mineral deposits has turned the attention of the mineral industry to the recovery of metals from the oxides and silicates. Anionic (fatty acid) and cationic collectors have in some cases made flotation of non-sulphides possible, although in general, flotation of oxide ores is not as yet an economic process. Consequently, many attempts have been made to sulphidize the surface of the relevant oxide mineral and thus make it amenable to flotation. (1) (2) (3) In recent years, Bautista and Sollenberger(4) have investigated the conversion of a number of oxides to sulphides by reacting them with molten sulpur. This paper presents the results of investigations carried out at the School of Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Minnesota to study the flotation characteristics of some sulphidized minerals. It is divided into two parts; Part I describes the sulphidization of a number of oxides and a silicate, and Part II presents the flotation behavior of the products of sulphidization.
