It is well known that hydrogen is introduced into iron or steel as a result of many chemical processes (acid pickling, electrolytic cleaning, plating, etc.). One of the reactions that has been of recent interest1 is the reaction between an iron surface and water vapor. It was shown a few years ago2-4 that hydrogen can be introduced into steel at an accelerated rate during abrasion as a result of this reaction. Grun-berg and Scott have also observed that water in mineral oil lubricants increases pitting failure in ball bearings5 and they have suggested that hydrogen from the water is the primary cause of this effect.' In this laboratory, the question was raised as to whether or not hydrogen is also introduced into the metal surface of a bearing as a result of the decomposition of the hydrocarbon lubricant itself, and an experiment was performed to try to find a satisfactory answer. All steel parts contain some residual hydrogen. Therefore, it appeared that the best way to carry out this experiment without the need for highly accurate quantitative analyses was to use deuterium as a tracer. The natural abundance of deuterium in H2 is only 0.015 pct. The tracer was obtained in the form of deuteroparaffin (CD,(CDJ, CD,) and 0.25 g were dissolved in 20 cc of mineral oil to form the lubricant to be used in the tests. The bearings used were New Departure Type QOLOO ball bearings with a ball diam of 0.187 in. Prior to adding the mineral oil-deuteroparaffin lubricant, the bearings were cleaned in warm trichloroethylene to remove the packing grease. After packing with the new deuterated lubricant, the bearings were operated in a bearing fatigue test machine under a radial load of 190 lb and a thrust load of 190 lb at a speed of 3800 rpm. The expected life under these conditions is about 500 hr. Two tests were made; one for a period of 27 hr and the other for a period of 102 hr. The bearings achieved a temperature of 120o F during the tests. When the tests were stopped the balls were mechanically removed from the bearings and were immediately placed in liquid nitrogen to reduce degassing until the analysis for deuterium could be made. Before analyzing, the balls were warmed to room temperature and scrubbed with several degreasing agents to remove all traces of the deuteroparaffin mixture. This cleaning procedure was shown to be satisfactory by running a control test in which one ball bearing was subjected to all parts of the test except running in the fatigue machine. The hydrogen and deuterium were removed from the balls using a hot extraction apparatus attached to a mass spectrometer. Four balls from each bearing were analyzed. Each one was analyzed separately by removing it from a cold storage volume of the hot extraction apparatus and transferring it to the oven tube with a magnet. As the gases were evolved they were analyzed with the mass spectrometer. Since the hydrogen and deuterium pass through steel in the atomic form and since there are many more hydrogen atoms than deuterium atoms in the sample, the probability of forming an HD molecule is greater than forming a D2 molecule. For this reason the evolution of HD and H was followed as each ball was placed in the oven. The results showed that as each ball from the test bearing was dropped into the oven, the mass spectrometer recording of the HD evolution increased by about ten divisions. When balls from the control test bearing were dropped into the oven, the increase was about one division or less. The hydrocarbon background in the mass spectrometer was also monitored to see if hydrocarbons or deuterocarbons were given off when the balls were dropped into the oven, but no change in the hydrocarbon peaks was observed. Since the balls contained a fair amount of residual hydrogen, isotope ratio measurements were made on the gas obtained from each ball. The D/H value found for those balls which had been operated in the fatigue testing machine was consistently about 0.3

The estimate of an ore reserve is a vital statement made about a mineral occurrence by an evaluator. It is important that such a statement communicate reality to all groups involved in a mining project, be they technical, financial, company directors, Stock Exchanges or the public. Ore reserve statements should state both resources and recoverable ore reserves. Resources may be important in very long term considerations, (because mining, metallurgical technology and economics change with time) but recoverable reserves are todays reality. The important factors contributing to recoverable reserves (in a general sense) are geology, mining method (and its impact on dilution and ore loss), metallurgical recovery, costs and commodity prices. These all need to be reflected in the ore reserve statement. In this paper recoverable ore reserve concepts across a wide range of orebodies are considered and discussed with respect to geology, mining method and ore reserve calculation procedures.

A chartered bus with about 30 attendees of the just completed 1998 SME Annual Meeting headed toward Green Cove Springs, FL, which the author had been told was located somewhere south of Jacksonville, FL. In conjunction with the meeting in Orlando, RGC (USA) Mineral Sands provided a tour of its facility. The author had worked with heavy minerals on a laboratory scale, performing the usual gravity and magnetic separations, but had never been to a heavy mineral mine and processing facility. Years ago as a metallurgist, the author once applied for a job in a heavy mineral operation in Florida -it may have been the same operation. After turning north on to Highway 95, the endless billboards promoting beach-front retirement communities proved the Atlantic ocean was just a few miles away (although the author never caught a glimpse of it). After another hour, the bus suddenly turned west and continued inland for about 65 km (40 miles). The thought occurred, "We are talking about beach sands, what are we doing heading away from the ocean?" As the bus continued inland, the author was struck by the flatness of the land and by the lakes, rivers and wetlands. He was also impressed by the many fine stands of pine and hardwoods. The office of RGC (USA) Mineral Sands is located about 16 km (10 miles) south of Green Cove Springs. Upon leaving the bus, members of the tour were greeted by Graeme Sloan, general manager, and Elliot Mallard, manager of mining. They provided some general information about the operation, including a slide show. RGC's Florida operation produces four concentrates: zircon (ZrSiO,), rutile (TiO,), ilmenite (FeTiO,) and leucoxene (an alteration product of ilmenite containing 67% to 70% TiO,). With a work force of about 170, the annual production of the above products is about 23,27, 45 and 14 kt (25,000 30,000 50,000 and 15,000 st), respectively. RGC also has other mineral sand operations, in addition to gold and base metal mines, mostly in Australia.

Visual computing opens the design process to a wider audience and allows rapid communication of mine plans to all stakeholders. The integration of software and hardware technologies that take advantage of a graphical environment will continue to improve both long-term and short-term mine design (Figure 1). A good design must be adaptive to respond to decision changes as the mine develops and more information becomes available. The constraints on mine design predicate careful analysis in order to operate the mine as efficiently and safely as possible.Continuous improvement in mining is assured by developing innovative technologies that target mine survey, drill and blast, modelling, short-term design and pit and stope optimisers. The design life of a mine has to be sufficiently long to ensure the mine is commercially successful, justifying the high start-up capital costs. Being able to execute a plan so that it honours the design realises the rewards of computerised mine planning and the long-term investment in data acquisition.

Assessment of the possible impact of existing and future mining projects located in remote areas may be difficult and costly. This may have an adverse effect on the process of issuing mine permits and development of new mines. A remote sensing based land cover change assessment methodology presented in this paper is a promising avenue to render this process more meaningful, precise and affordable. It has been applied to a case study of the Oil Sands Mining Development in the north-east of the Canadian province of Alberta. Recently, the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) is a place of unprecedented growth of open-pit mining operations. This study was focused on the primary impact onto the landscape and vegetation resulting from exploration and, mining development. This impact was assessed using an information extraction method applied to two LANDSAT scenes. The analysis based on derived land cover maps shows a 8.64% decrease of natural vegetation in the study area (715,094 ha) in 2001 relative to 1992. It is demonstrated that the methodology presented here provides reliable results and is fully applicable for the assessment of the environmental impact of large scale mining operations.

The flotation efficiency of magnetic concentrate of the Anhui hematite ore, which includes a great quantity of iron-bearing silicates, has been studied through reverse flotation test with a new type of collector Fly-102. The results indicate that collector Fly-102 has a strong adaptability to the variation of temperature, when the flotation temperature is in the range of 10? to 35?, using collector Fly-102 can obtain good flotation indexes. Collector Fly-102 has a strong adaptability to the variation of the slime contents and grades of the flotation samples. When the content of slime and the grade of the flotation feeds are 30% and 55.63% respectively, under the condition that the temperature is 15?, the open circuit flotation test was carried out with collector Fly-102. After one-stage roughing, one-stage cleaning and two-stage scavenging, a better result is got, the grade of iron concentrate reaches 67.12%, and the recovery of iron concentrate comes up to 84.15%.

THE John Fritz Gold Medal for 1929 was presented to Herbert Hoover at the Executive Mansion on April 25, at a luncheon given by Mr. Hoover to present and past members of the Board of Award, preceding medalists, and presidents and secretaries of the American societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers. The presentation party of forty engineers which gathered at the White House, from all parts of the United States, was made up of past presidents of the four senior national engineering societies that established the John Fritz Medal and included five men who had received the medal in previous years. These former medalists were Edward Dean Adams, J. J. Carty, J. Waldo Smith, Elmer A. Sperry and Ambrose Swasey. This medal is the highest honor bestowed by these four national engineering societies, having a membership of 60,000. It is awarded not oftener than annually for "notable scientific or industrial achievement, without restriction on account of nationality or sex." In accordance with custom, the award to Mr. Hoover was made tentatively and without announcement in October, 1927, and was formally con- firmed and announced one year later.

Oolitic iron ores have significant economical importance because of their extensive resources in the world. However, their utilisation is often quite limited due to the high content of phosphorus inside. The phosphorus is often finely disseminated in the oolite structure and generally not liberated in the form of free particles. The iron ore used in this work is a typical oolitic goethitic iron ore with high phosphorus. The process of phosphorus removal from this ore is difficult because the phosphorus is not present as distinct minerals. As a result, no physical beneficiation process is able to separate the phosphorus from the iron bearing phases. The current concentrate contains low iron grade (Fe ~49%) and high phosphorus content (P 0.7~0.8%). The acid leaching is a potential way to dissolve phosphorus. Previous studies have shown that the thermal treatment makes the phosphorus more accessible for the acids and enables more efficient phosphorus dissolution. Some chemical additives are reported to enhance this phenomenon. A series of tests have been carried out using roasting - grinding - magnetic separation - leaching technologies to remove the phosphorus from this current concentrate. In the first stage, several tests were performed at pilot scale under the same conditions as described in some publications. The achieved results were similar to those from previous tests at laboratory scale. In the second stage, new test conditions were investigated in laboratory scale in order to achieve better result and to reduce the operational cost.

Both Canada and the United States are endowed with significant reserves of mineral resources. Mining industries in these two countries have a strong safety and health culture; skilled, dedicated and well-paid workforce; applications of state-of-the art technologies and high productivity, strict environmental requirements and social responsibility. Both countries are global leaders in safe, economic, productive, environmentally responsible and sustainable mining practices. Mining schools/ departments in Canada and the United States provide a strong and comprehensive education and training, hands-on learning experience, with support for internships and co-op opportunities to prepare graduates for careers not only nationally but also in the global mining industry. While there are many similarities in their industries and mining schools, there are also some differences. This article examines the contribution of mining to the economy, the political climate, the regulatory framework, the investment climate, environmental regulations, the language, the perception of mining, news and press coverage, and the academic landscape in both countries. Opinions, observations and perspectives shared in this article are of the author, and do not necessarily reflect the views, policies or positions of any organization, employer or affiliated group.

In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

Annealed and electrolytically polished pure iron was oxidized between 650° and 850°C at oxygen pressures of 0.1 to 2 microns Hg. Electron optical studies showed that oxidation occurs discontinuously over the surface and orients crystallographically with the substructure of the metal grains. IN previous papers', " the authors described the formation of oxide films on high purity iron at norrnal pressures and at temperatures below 300°C. Electron optical studies showed that the oxide film consisted of many individual oxide crystallites having nearly random orientation on each metal grain. The size of the oxide crystallites depended upon the temperature and upon the extent of oxidation. In these studies the crystallite size varied from 250 to 1800Å. Recently, Bardolle and Benard3 studied the crystal habit of the oxide crystallites formed on Armco iron between 650" and 850°C in what might be defined as a "poor vacuum" atmosphere in which the pressure could be varied between 10-1 to 10-3 mm of Hg. Their results showed that, at 850°C and a vacuum of l0-2 to 10-3 mm of Hg, a few well oriented nuclei of oxide were formed on the metal grains. At pressures between l0-1 to 10-2 mm of Hg, many oriented nuclei of oxide were formed. At 750°C the metal surface was bright although an oxide was present. Unfortunately, the extent of oxidation, the oxygen pressure, and the influence of carbon in the metal were not determined, and it was, therefore, impossible to give a theoretical interpretation to the very beautiful light micrographs. Bardolle and Benard used the light microscope to determine the crystal habit of the oxide and X-ray diffraction to determine the orientation relationships. It was believed that the use of controlled amounts of oxidation at high temperature is an important method for the study of the initial stages of oxidation of metals at high temperatures. This paper presents the first results of an electron optical study of this problem for iron. Since the electron microscope and electron-diffraction methods using stripped oxide films and surface replicas yielded finer details of the crystal habit and structure of oxide film, these methods were used in this study. Two types of iron having different carbon contents were used: Puron and Armco* iron. A com- parison of the results for these materials made possible a study of the influence of the surface oxide-carbon reaction on the initial stages of oxidation. Before discussing the experimental results, the thermodynamic equilibria of 1—the oxidation reaction, 2—the surface oxide-carbon reaction, and 3—the solubility of oxygen in iron, will be considered. In addition, it is important to consider the kinetic-theory predictions on the rate of collision of oxygen with the iron surface. Thermodynamic and Kinetic-Theory Calculations Only one type of reaction is usually considered in the oxidation of iron at normal pressures at high temperatures: Fe(a) + 1/2O2(g) = FeO(s) 3Fe(a) + 2O2(g) = Fe3O4(s) 2Fe(a) +3/2O2(g) = a-Fe2O3(s). As part of a funded project we have completed a comparative literature survey of the US regional Proterozoic geology. For our com¬parative study model we used the geological settings of the very large pitchblende deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada and the Northern Terri¬tory of Australia. These occur in a variety of Archean and Lower Proterozoic host rocks, at and below a regional unconformity that is capped by subhorizontal Middle to Upper Proterozoic conti¬nental sedimentary rocks. We find that there have been recorded in some parts of the US similar unconformable sequences of Middle to Upper Proterozoic continental sedimentary rocks that overlie older basement rocks.

The Union Copper mine is in the Gold Hill district; Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, N. C. The mine was discovered in 1799 and first worked as a gold mine; but copper was encountered at depth, and the property became an important producer of copper. It is estimated that the mine produced 5,000,000 pounds of copper before operations were discontinued in 1907. As part of the strategic minerals program, the Bureau of Mines conducted a development project on the property from July 1943 to November 1943. Eight diamond-drill holes totaling 2,500 linear feet were drilled to delineate the ore body. Analyses 205 core samples were made. Tabulations of sample analyses and drill-hole logs are presented in this report.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel' would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

Kelsey Centrifugal Jig was found to be promising for the beneficiation of fine coal particles. The present study was aimed at in-depth understanding of the separation features of Kelsey Jig through detailed experimentation. Beneficiation of fine coal of size 150 x 300 µm was studied in a laboratory Kelsey Jig. The thickness of the ragging bed is found to be an extremely crucial parameter apart from the other process parameters such as rotational speed and pulsation frequency. A constant pulp density (25% solids) of the feed slurry was maintained in the study. The feed rate was also kept constant at 50 kg/hr dry solids. Silica sand of size -1.68+0.85 mm was used as ragging material to avoid the pegging of internal screen having an opening of 425 µm. The rotational speed was found to have significant effect on the depth of the ragging bed and its porosity, which influenced the separation performance considerably. Pulsation was identified as the key factor in stratifying the coal bed and defining the misplacement as well as ragging bed porosity, which influenced the mass yield and quality of the products. Beneficiation studies were carried out with rotational speed varying between 900-1000 rpm while pulsation frequency was kept within 850-925 rpm. In a single pass through the Kelsey Jig 7-8% (absolute) reduction in the ash content of the feed material was observed at more than 55% mass yield. High rotational speed, moderate pulsation, and low ragging bed depth favored good cleaning. A high bed depth was found to facilitate rejection of high ash materials. It was established that Kelsey Jig is effective in fine coal cleaning though a controlled operation is required in order to achieve superior performance. The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column was installed as a final cleaner at the Northam Platinum Ltd. UG 2 concentrator in South Africa. It further discusses the improvements achieved after the conversion of a conventional flotation column, utilized as cleaner in the Merensky concentrator, to an external sparger flotation column. Finally, the application of the above knowledge in the design and commissioning of an external sparger flotation column as final cleaner in the furnace slag concentrator, is also discussed. 1. FINAL CLEANER AT THE UG 2 CONCENTRATOR The MF2 designed UG 2 concentrator is processing 75 000 tonnes run of mine ore at a head grade of 4.0 g/t 3PGM+Au and a feed Cr2O3 concentration of 28 %. Since commissioning of the plant in 2001, Cr2O3 in final concentrate amounted to approximately 5 % of the total mass. Although final concentrate produced from the UG 2 concentrator is blended with final concentrate obtained from the Merensky concentrator before smelting, blended Cr2O3 values in excess of 1.6% lead to difficulties in the subsequent smelting process. Several options for reducing the amount of Cr2O3 in final concentrate have been evaluated namely:- ? Differing types of depressants at various dosing rates. This test work did not reduce the amount of Cr2O3 reporting to final concentrate by any significant extent. ? Reduction in mass pull to minimize the entrainment of Cr2O3 in the concentrate stream.. This process change had a detrimental effect on PGM recovery. Conclusions were drawn that conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells could not achieve the required selectivity without sacrificing PGM recovery. As a consequence an alternative mechanism needed to be incorporated for the final cleaning of PGM concentrate.

Phase relations of gadolinium alloyed, up to 40 weight-percent (wt pct), with AISI 304-type stainless steel were established. Body-and face-centered cubic iron-rich solid solution phases and several intermetallic gadolinium-containing compounds of variable composition that approximated the formulas Fe9Gd, Ni7Gd2, Ni3Gd, Fe2Gd, NiGd, and NiGd3 were identified. The intermetallic phases Fe9Gd and Ni7Gd2 were noted to melt at about 1,080° C at about 0 to 2 wt pct gadolinium. The melting temperature of Fe9Gd increased with increas-ing gadolinium content to a plateau at about 1,230°C and 30 wt pct gadolinium, and the melting point of Ni7Gd2 decreased to a plateau at 900° C and 30 wt pct gadolinium where Ni3Gd, NiGd, and Fe2Gd coexist. Body-centered cubic iron solid solution was stable from 1 to 2 wt pct gadolinium to higher contents, 30 wt pct gadolinium or possibly more, and face-centered cubic iron up to 12 wt pct gadolinium below 1,200° C. The stability of these phases above 1,200° C was not resolved except for the mel points. A limited number of fabrication variables as well as mechanical and corrosion properties of alloys containing up to 5 wt pct gadolinium were studied. Equilibrating and forming operations were best conducted at about 940° to 1,080° C. Some variability in the yield and tensile strengths of alloys was noted; however, there was a continual decrease in ductility and impact resistance with increasing gadolinium contents. The resistance of gadolinium alloys to corrosion in water at 354° C was about the same as stainless steel.
