ASARCO Incorporated, a large and diverse producer of non-ferrous metals, is involved primarily in smelting and refining of copper and lead. The Company also recovers by-product metals and chemicals produced in the smelting and refining process including selenium, tellurium, silver, gold, platinum, palladium, bismuth, antimony oxide, lead-antimony alloys, and nickel sulfate. The treatment of complex concentrates, containing high level's of impurities, also results in the production of various sludges, drosses, dusts and slags. This paper addresses the interplant and intraplant transfer of these materials between the copper and lead circuits and their subsequent treatment for maximum metals recovery. It also describes the role of ENCYCLB/TEXAS Inc., a subsidiary of Asarco, which treats Asarco's by-products, as well as hazardous and non-hazardous wastes produced by other manufacturers.

"INTRODUCTION These inspection standards have been prepared for use as a guide for the Federal inspection of anthracite mines. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7231 in January 1943 and used as a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes in the original standards have been made, due in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part to need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions and practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared.Throughout these standards reference is made to determining the methane content of the mine air by using a permissible flame safety lamp. The Bureau has approved various electrical devices for the detection of methane, but it is recognized that new devices for determining the percentage of combustible gases as well as the percentage of oxygen, might be perfected for general use in mines, and therefore it may be necessary to revise certain standards to include the use of such equipment if and when the device is accepted as being permissible.About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however, failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also lead to loss of life.With continuing change in mining methods, some of these standards may become inapplicable, and further revision will be advisable. Therefore, question regarding these standards and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau, so that changes may be made from time to time. Numerous changes proposed by mine operators and by State mining departments have been incorporated in these standards."

"400 cubic foot Agitair Flotation Cells are in use at Sherritt Gordon's Fox and Ruttan Mine Cu-Zn concentrators. The 4 impeller model No. 120, used at the Fox Mine Operation, appears to offer superior agitation and aeration qualities compared to the single impeller model 120A, in use at Ruttan. The advantages of the model 120 are most significant with ores of high specific gravity and coarse grind.IntroductionSherritt is using 400 cubic foot Agitair flotation machines at both the Fox and Ruttan Mine Concentrators.At the 3000 tpd, Cu-Zn Fox concentrator, 18 model 120 machines have been in operation since May, 1969.The 10000 tpd, Cu-Zn operation at Ruttan utilizes 49 model 120A machines. The plant started operation in May, 1973.The 4-impeller model 120 flotation cell has been marketed by Galigher since the early 1960's but the single impeller model 120A is relatively new.Model 120 Agitair -Cell DataThe Model 120 (Dwg. 1) has floor dimensions of 101 x 10' and a lip height of 2~ to 4 feet to provide up to 400 cubic feet of volume. This machine is shown with a froth crowder and stabilizer plates which are optional.Each motor drives two agitators. 20 HP is recommended by Galigher but 25 HP is more realistic with massive sulphides. The SG of ?ox ore is about 3. 6.The Model 120 can handle up to 600 cubic feet of air per cell at 2 psig which requires 5-6 HP at the blowers. Air volume to each impeller is controlled by a valve from a main header.During the first 3 years of operation at Fox there were few mechanical problems with the 120's."

A laser-based particle deposition (LBPD) technique has recently been developed at Michigan Technological University for patterning mesostructures made of nanoparticles and their clusters. The LBPD technique makes use of laser induced optical forces to transport and pattern nanoparticles on a variety of conductive and non-conductive substrates from nanoparticle-in-liquid suspension. A weakly focused laser beam is used to confine and propel particles along the laser beam. Confinement is accomplished by forces due to optical field gradients that act on polarizable particles and tend to move them to axis of the laser beam. The force propelling the particles along the direction of the laser beam arise from momentum conservation of photons scattered from the particles. In this paper, this novel LBPD technology is briefly reviewed, and several examples of patterning are presented. The size and morphology of mesostrips produced from gold and polystyrene nanoparticles, under a range of deposition conditions, have been characterized by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The results presented here demonstrate that gold and polystyrene nanoparticles deposited by LBPD can form clusters of particles. When deposited at an appropriate rate, such clusters can form multilayer mesostrips of high particle density. One goal of research on such systems is to fabricate arrays of parallel lines made up of colloidal particles having a range of surface functionalities. Such arrays have potential for application as novel microsensors for environmental sensors.

In this study, some experiments were performed for the dimensional control, pre-treatment, getting salt, metallic aluminum and aluminum oxide into the solution of 15 kg aluminum black dross obtained from a private company which recycles aluminium drosses. Water leaching experiments are done for removing salts and aluminum nitride. Temperature stirring speed, solid-liquid rate are investigated while water leaching experiments. Removing of AlN is provided at 25 °C at a rate of 42.48%, at 80 °C at a rate of 86.4%. Leaching experiments performed with NaOH. NaOH concentration and time was analyzed. Efficiency of including metallic aluminum into the solution is determined to be 98% approximately. Melting (fusion) experiments were performed with NaOH at high temperatures to include aluminum oxide in the structure of the remaining after dissolving process into the solution and after dissolving the resulting structures in water, efficiency of including aluminum into the solution is determined to be 85%.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if commercially available automatic sprinklers could withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines without leaking and if exposure to the mine environment affected their leak pressures. New sprinklers and sprinklers exposed to the mine environment were subjected to increasing pressures until leakage occurred. The average leak pressures of the new sprinklers ranged from 640 to 2,300 psig and were significantly different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Generally, standard-response sprinklers withstood higher pressures than fast-response sprinklers. The results indicated that most commercially available sprinklers would withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines; however, they would not provide the same reliability and safety factor as sprinklers used aboveground at or below their rated pressure of 175 psig. The average leak pressures of the sprinklers exposed to the mine environment ranged from 740 to 1,180 psig. The mine environment affected the ability of 66% of the sprinklers to withstand high static pressures. New sprinklers were also evaluated at pressures of at least 500 psig for 30 days to determine their ability to withstand long-term exposure to high static pressures; no leakage was observed.

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper's Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company's mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

A criterion for stability of a lamellar structure in two-phase alloys ulas derived froflr perturbation analysis of the steady-state solutions for eutectic growth. Both the mass and thermal diffusion were considered with boundary conditions for coupled lamellar growth. The concept of an effective liquidus slope was introduced. Excellent agreement was found with the experiments of Mollard and Flemings and the theory predicted a range of compositions on one side of the eulectic composition in which stable growth may occur with zero temperature gradient. The lamellar structure was found to be more stable than predicted by simple constitutional supercooling. The effect of impurity additions was also considered. DIRECTIONALLY solidified eutectic alloys may have a structure consisting of parallel plates or rods. It is important to know the range of composition and growth conditions that produce this ideal composite structure. Breakdown of the planar solid-liquid interface during growth may lead to a dendritic or cellular structure as in single-phase alloys. In the case of single-phase alloys, the concept of constitutional supercooling1 may explain breakdown, but in two-phase alloys the concept is no longer valid because the melting point is not given by the liquidus of one phase. Both phases must be considered in the mass and thermal diffusion problem. In the following theory a boundary condition at the solid-liquid interface was determined by using the steady-state equations of Jackson and ~unt' to relate the average temperature and composition of the liquid at the interface. Then a sinusoidal perturbation in the shape of the interface was introduced to test for stability as in the analysis of Mullins and ~ekerka.~ The wavelength of the important perturbation was assumed to be much larger than the lamellar spacing, h, and the perturbation was assumed not to change the lamellar spacing, A. Both the mass and thermal diffusion equation were used with averaged quantities at the boundary to determine whether the perturbation grows or shrinks in time. A stability criterion was determined by considering the case in which the perturbation remains stationary. An example of Pb-Sn alloys was used to illustrate the validity of this theory. I) THEORY A) Temperature at the Interface. The temperature of the interface in coupled two-phase growth is close to the eutectic temperature TE even for alloys off eutectic composition. It is assumed that the interface is in local equilibrium and one expects the temperature at the intersection of the liquid phase and the solid phases a and 0 to be near the eutectic temperature. The interface is undercooled because of curvature and the deviation of the composition in the liquid from the eutectic composition. The average interface temperature Ti for steady-state growth of a lamellar eutectic with a plane interface was determined by Jackson and Hunt' as given in their Eq. [17c]. Instead of using the ratio of the lamellar widths hp/h, as a parameter, the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, will be used as it simplifies the algebra. The average interface temperature using this notation becomes: The average temperature of the interface depends on the volume fraction of the 0 phase, +, which may be related to the composition of the solid or the bulk composition of the liquid Co by: where C, and Cp are the average compositions of the solid phases. In steady-state growth, the composition of the solid is equal to the composition in the liquid far from the interface. The variation of the average interface temperature with composition is illustrated in Fig. 1 for the case of Pb-Sn alloys with a 10"4 cm lamellar spacing as calculated from Eqs. [I] and [2]. The interface temperature goes through a maximum at a composition near but not exactly at the eutectic composition. A numerical solution of equations describing two-phase flow in porous media shows promise in providing a technique for predicting the displacermet from satlds of oil by water or gas. The description includes the influence of relative permeability, fluid viscosities and densities, graviry, and capillary pressure, and, tholrgh tested ortly for two-dimensional cases, should be eqlmlly applicable in three-dimensional geometry. Two memorical methods ore presented: the first method is quite general in its applicability; the second method can be used only with certain types of boundary conditions but requires less computing. Comparisons of computed results with data from Inhoratory models are presented. These data were taken on a water flood of a strarified model and on water floods of a five-spot model for favorable and unfavorable mobility ratios. On the stratified model, excellent agreement with recovery at breakthrough was obtained; agreement with recovery after breakthrough was poor. In the five-spot model, good agreement was obtainecl with recovery at and after breakthrough. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to present a reservoir engineering method requiring knowledge only of rock geometry and the normally measured rock and fluid properties for calculating the multi-dimensional flow of water displacing oil from porous, water-wet rock containing connate water; and, second, to investigate the validity of the method by comparing results of calculations with previously observed displacements in laboratory models. The availability of such a verified technique of reservoir analysis would afford major advantages. First, it would demonstrate that the fundamental macroscopic concepts of two-phase fluid mechanics, i.e., relative permeability and capillary pressure, yield an adequate description of the physical process. Also, since most reservoir rocks appear to be water-wet and contain connate water along with oil, it would provide a method of technical and economic value for calculating the course of oil displacement by water directly from measured reservoir and fluid properties. It is important to emphasize that the calculation is subject only to the limitations of detail and precision of reservoir information, but not to limitations introduced by simplifying assumptions. Further, it would providc almost the only means of examining the influence of factors such as the size and extent of reservoir inhomogeneities and uncertainties in the basic reservoir data. Knowledge of this influence is essential in stating quantitatively the detail required to define a reservoir and in establishing the relation between the uncertainty in the definition of reservoir properties and the reliability of predicted performance. Moreover, in the process of solving a particular problem much detailed information would become available about the displacement process. For example, at each point in the reservoir for all stages of the displace ment. the calculations would yield not only the water and oil saturations but also the direction and magnitude of fluid velocities and the local fluid mobilities. Such dctail is potentially of great value in giving insight into the mechanics of particular displacements. The development of such a method has long been the goal of research in the application of numerical an-alysis to petroleum reservoir enginecrinz. The most complete treatment of the displacement process published to date is that of Douglas. Blair, and Wagner,' which, however, was limited to flow in a single dimension. The method presented in the present work is hascd on the numerical solution of a finite difference analogue of the multi-dimensional differential system describing the displacement process. Although current work has considered only displacement of oil by water from water-wet sands, the differential system for other immiscible displacements, such as gas displacing oil with which it is in phase equilibrium, is quite similar. It should therefore be expected that the technique described will be applicable to displacement by gas as well. The description of the simultaneous flow of fluids through porous media in terms of relative perrncability and capillary pressure has been adequately discussed in the literature and standard textbooks. "A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the demonstration scale (15 t/d) for the extraction of gold using a cyanide-free process. The pyrite was depressed in the flotation circuit in order to promote the flotation of copper and to achieve a sufficient copper grade to meet the copper smelter criteria. However, the recoveries of copper were 80% and only about 50% for the gold was found in the copper concentrate. The balance of the gold (50%) and copper (20%) contained in the pyrite concentrate as a reject from an overall flotation circuit. The gold grade in the pyrite concentrate is 5.40 g Au/t and copper about 0.77%. About 170 tons of pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluid bed to produce a calcine. Copper was then extracted as copper sulphate using diluted sulphuric acid. The residual solid was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Thereafter, the gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation over silica using DST proprietary process. The maximum gold recovery by chlorination was 90%. The average gold recovery by cyanidation of these calcines was 71%.IntroductionDundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from ores or concentrates. The technology offers viable and efficient gold recoveries and the ability to handle refractory ores and contaminated material (As, Hg, etc..). The process was successfully demonstrated on hundreds of samples provided by various mines, exploration and development projects and has evolved from laboratory experiment to demonstration at an industrial scale.DST’s chlorination process operates in a closed loop circuit, which implies that no liquid effluents are generated. The chemistry and process design allows precious metal deposits containing base metals to be treated viably. The tailings from the process are inert and non-toxic, sulphide depleted and thus non-acid generating. The efficiency of the process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. The company completed in 2015 the construction of the first industrial demonstration plant operating with the DST technology. The plant has a capacity of 15 tons per day of mineral concentrate, and the ability to extract gold and silver utilizing DST chlorination technology.DST has tested its chlorination technology at demonstration scale on the refractory pyrite concentrate containing 5.40 g Au/t and 0.8 %copper. This auriferous pyrite concentrate, was by-product of copper concentrate respecting the copper smelter norms, is produced in a country where cyanide is prohibited and refractory to cyanidation. The pyrite concentrate was initially processed successfully (gold recoveries: > 90%) by the DST technology at laboratory (2011: 20 kg) and pilot (2014: 5 tons) scales to extract gold. About 170 tons of this pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant located in Thetford Mines."

Multicomponent materials are common in nearly all areas of materials science and technology, yet the use of phase diagrams to represent these complex systems is hampered by the requirement of three or more dimensions for explicit graphical representation. In the present work, the "solid-modeling" capabilities of a computer aided design (CAD) system have been applied to the representation of three-dimensional phase diagrams. Relevant phase diagrams for a hypothetical quaternary eutectic system were constructed and used to demonstrate the capabilities of the technique. These capabilities lead to relative ease of phase diagram construction and improved access to qualitative and quantitative information. Results of this work are contrasted and compared to previous efforts toward computer ,representation of phase diagrams. It is concluded that solid-modeling of three-dimensional phase diagrams can be used to advantage in both education and research.

Since 80's we built the first deepwater wharf of Shenzhen chiwan port which has 3 berths of 10000 dwt, We have built 3 berths for vessels of 40000 dwt both in Shekou Port and Chiwan port. The berths for carriers of 10000 dwt in Yantian Port of Dapeng Bay are constructing now. In the five years, We built more than 20 deepwater berths of 5000 dwt to 40000 dwt. This paper will introduce how to solve the difficulties of the complex geological conditions and how to use the new fashion construction. We will reduce the period of engineering construction and get good quality and make a good beginning of rapid development of port construction in ShenZhen Special Economic Zone.

Bitumninous and semianthracite coal reserves underlie about 1,400 square miles of Arkansas, less than 2.7 percent of the state's total area. These deposits, located near the western border, contain an estimated 2.2 billion tons, of which about half are recoverable. This represents less than one-tenth of one percent of the national reserves. Most of the commercial coal is mined from thin beds that are at least 14 inches thick. In some locations, however, the coal beds can be as much as eight feet thick. Lignite was mined in southern Arkansas before the Civil War. Current estimates indicate that the reserves may be as high as 9 billion tons, which could be used in the state's coal-fired electric generating plants; however, these deposits are not being mined at present. Because many coal operations in Arkansas are small and the demand for coal is unsteady, the industry employs fewer than 25 miners on a daily basis. Arkansas gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved November 21,1980, subject to the correction of four minor program deficiencies. The regulatory program was fully approved January 22, 1982. Authority of the state to administer its Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Program was granted upon approval of the Arkansas Reclamation Plan on May 2, 1983. Arkansas was the first state to assume responsibility for abandoned mine land emergency projects when its Reclamation Plan was approved.

"SUMMARYSeamounts are underwater mountains caused by volcanic activity. They are of great oceanographic interest because of their local and basin-scale influence over ocean systems, their often unique ecosystems, and because they are associated with the formation of ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) crusts. These crusts are of particular interest to scientists because they are rich in some of the rare elements increasingly required for development of renewable technologies. When the possibility of mining such seamounts is considered, an inter-disciplinary study of seamount hydrodynamics, crust formation and ecosystem sensitivity is required. MarineE-tech is one such multi-disciplined project that has been commissioned to address these different aspects in order to improve understanding of the viability and desirability of mining Fe-Mn crusts. This paper describes a key part of this study, namely the development of a model, informed by hydrographic observations, of the currents around one such seamount and the in situ validation of a sediment disturbance plume model as a pre-cursor to assessment of the potential effects of mining activity.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese crusts are thought to form by precipitation of iron and manganese oxides from oxygen depleted mid-water known as the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Oxidation rich waters, typically at depths of about 800-2200 m (Hein et al, 2000). This range of depths coincides with the flanks and summits of many seamounts. The ferromanganese crusts found on seamounts have been found to have high concentrations of rare elements, like Tellurium, that are considered critical to low-carbon energy production. Seamounts are complex environments: in terms of the local hydrodynamics that tend to trap water over the seamount due to the Taylor Cap effect (e.g. Chapman and Haidvogel, 1992) and which can enhance the productivity of seamount waters through upwelling (Lavelle and Mohn, 2010), in terms of the microbiological activity that leads to the precipitation of the Fe-Mn crusts, and also in terms of the often unique ecosystems that are the product of the “island” nature of seamounts and the upwelling of nutrients. The understanding of this complexity is a necessary journey towards the realization of viable, yet environmentally responsible, mining schemes. The formation of crusts will be influenced by the local (and larger-scale) hydrodynamics. The exploration of promising crust sites could be made much more efficient by understanding where the most prospective deposits are likely to occur. Knowing how to remove these crusts without impacting significantly on the local environment will be a pre-requisite for such mining to be acceptable to the public and funders alike."

"IntroductionWITH the increase in quantity of sour gas reserves in the Province of Alberta, and the wider market for sulphur brought about by mounting world demand and restrictions placed on the principal supply, it was inevitable that this important source of sulphur would be .developed. In the light of these facts, it seems timely that a general paper on sulphur recovery from petroleum gases be presented. This, then, is the purpose of the following text. A short discussion of each of the following subjects is presented:(1) Properties and uses of sulphur(2) Existing sources(3) Market research(4) The recovery process in Turner Valley(5) Hazards of sulphur productionNo pretext of originality of material is made since innumerable reports have been prepared on this and related topics and information contained in these has been used quite liberally.Properties and uses of SulphurSulphur is a non-metallic element having an atomic weight of 32.06. The stable crystalline form at atmospheric temperature is referred to as 'rhombic' sulphur. It is bright yellow and has a specific gravity of 2.05, equivalent to 129.2 lb./cu. Ft. Above 204°F. sulphur has another stable crystalline form, referred to as 'monoclinic'. This is reddish-brown and is slightly less dense than the rhombic variety (122.4 lb./cu. Ft.). Sulphur in bulk form weighs 84 to 90 lb. per cu. Ft. Sulphur melts at approximately 240°F. to a straw coloured liquid which is quite viscous."

Shortly after the passage of the Taconite Amendment in Minnesota, several mining companies announced their intention to build new magnetite taconite plants and another announced its intention to augment present facilities. It is clear that Minnesota will enjoy an expanding magnetite taconite industry, but despite the fact that the reserves are large, eventually they will have to be supplemented by oxidized deposits. Furthermore, not all producers have magnetite taconite reserves. Due to the extensive oxidation of most of the western part of the Mesabi Range, there are no large blocks of unaltered magnetite taconite that lend themselves to open pit operations. Unless a commercial process can be developed to concentrate the oxidized, or so- called "nonmagnetic", taconite and semi-taconite, the existing mines operating in the western part of the range will be forced to shut down when the direct shipping, wash and gravity ores are depleted, or are no longer salable, because of their poor quality compared to high-grade pellets. KNOWN PROCESSES COSTLY The enormous reserves of the oxidized iron- bearing formation have offered a tantalizing challenge to metallurgists for many years. In fact, several processes for concentrating certain types of oxidized ore have been successful at both laboratory and pilot plant level, but to date no process for concentrating semitaconite or oxidized taconite has reached commercial fruition. Magnetic roasting, followed by low-intensity magnetic separation1, has shown considerable promise because the high iron recovery makes the ratio of concentration of many of the oxidized ores more favorable than that of magnetite taconite. However, the capital and operating costs are high and, in many cases, a high- grade concentrate cannot be made without resorting to flotation of the magnetic concentrate. Hence, most research groups are investigating alternate methods of concentration with the hopes of reducing the cost.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. This presentation discusses NASA-funded research on the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map diagnostic acid rock drainage (ARD) mineralogy that adversely affects water quality within watershed and to determine the relative contributions of natural ARD sources of metals and acidity to that drainage. Ground-based reflectance spectroscopy, combined with water chemistry, is used to identify mineralogical and chemical variations throughout a watershed. Integrated with hyperspectral data acquired from airborne remote sensing platforms, such as the NASA Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) sensor, a methodology has been developed that should improve environmental assessments and tracking of impacts on and from drainages. Phase I of this project focuses on a drainage basin (Lake Creek), tributary to the upper Arkansas River in central Colorado, which is impacted by natural acid rock drainage from areas of high-sulfide hydrothermal alteration. This project builds upon research and inventory efforts by the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) to identify hydrothermal alteration that is the primary source or is contributing to acidic and toxic drainage in Colorado. This presentation will cover ground and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing techniques and results and water analyses for seasonal high-flow and low-flow conditions in Lake Creek. Identifying correlations between mineralogy, especially mineralogy that can be identified through airborne remote sensing, and water chemistry is a key focus of this project. Of particular interest are low-pH iron phases such as jarosite, ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, copiapite, and transitional amorphous phases as well as AlOH phases from higher, although still acidic, pH environments which are observed to mix with the iron precipitates within the streams draining from the hydrothermal systems. Drainage in the Lake Creek watershed derives from the Grizzly Peak caldera (Oligocene), which exhibits extensive hydrothermal alteration. Alteration types include silicic, quartz-sericite, quartz-sericite-pyrite, advanced argillic, and argillic. By understanding the chemistry of a naturally impacted drainage and its relationship to the surrounding geology, the project goal is to allow more efficient and complete identification of such sources in mineralised terranes through remote sensing technology.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.
