Base-metal sulfide refractory gold ores often contain a portion of ‘free’ gold that is amenable to recovery using gravity concentration methods, whilst the refractory portion of the gold is better recovered using flotation. The decision as to whether a plant treating a refractory gold ore should utilise gravity concentration or a flash flotation circuit (or a combination of both) within the grinding circuit is usually made at the design stage of flow sheet development. Very limited data is available in the published literature which provides an industrial scale comparison on which to base such a decision and conventional laboratory testing methods are often the only way of obtaining such data. The optimum processing route will also be mineralogy dependent.This paper presents the findings of operating a refractory gold plant with either flash flotation (normal operation) or a combination of flash and gravity recovery methods treating the cyclone underflow stream and will demonstrate the regions of the recovery profile that each contributes to. Size-by-assay analysis has been performed on a number of streams around the operating plant to gain an insight into the changes that occur when the gravity circuit is in operation in addition to the flash flotation circuit. A discussion around the implications to overall plant operation in combining the use of a batch process (gravity concentration) with a continuous process (flotation) is presented.CITATION:Newcombe, B and Semini, D, 2014. South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

Having knowledge of mechanism of magnetite formation is essential in a number of industrial processes including magnetite synthesis and corrosion of iron. In this study, magnetite nanoparticle was synthesized via two different ways; coprecipitation of iron (II) and (III) and oxidation of ferrous hydroxide. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mid-Far IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical analysis for determination of Fe II/Fe III ratio and ICP-MS for iron isotopic ratio (56Fe/54Fe) measurement. Since fractionation of iron isotopes depends on reaction rate and bonding strength, interpretation of the isotopic data with respect to the possible mechanisms is discussed. No fractionation of iron isotopes was observed for the magnetite synthesized by coprecipitation, whilst magnetite formed from ferrous hydroxide showed higher abundance of 54Fe compared to 56Fe in the beginning of reaction, implying the significance of the following reaction:

The titanium industry is based on the unique properties of titanium dioxide and titanium metal. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide in its two main allotropic forms, rutile and anatase, is the predominant white pigment for paints, paper, plastics, rubber, and various other materials. Titanium metal, because of its high strength/weight ratio and resistance to corrosion, is widely used for aircraft, both in airframes and engines, for powerplant surface condensers, and a wide variety of chemical processing and handling equipment. U.S. production of titanium dioxide pigment in 1979 was about 658,000 tons - 2/, valued at about $770 million. Net shipments of titanium mill products were around 19,000 tons, worth about $380 million. These two major uses account for over 96% of domestic titanium consumption. The third largest application, the use of rutile for coating welding rods, required about 9,500 tons of rutile concentrate, worth about $4 million. Other applications of titanium-bearing raw materials include the manufacture of titanium carbides, ceramics, and chemicals, and the recently developed use of ilmenite as a substitute for barite in well-drilling muds.

Beyond doubt it is practically impossible to eliminate all chances of accidents from falls. Mother Earth is not going to give up her treasures without some sacrificing on our part. This particular question ranks among the important subjects connected with coal-mining, and has been given less attention as a factor of life- and limb-destroyer than any other cause. The single fatalities which happen create very little attention; nevertheless, when counted up at the end of the year, they outnumber the unfortunate ones that are mowed down by the wholesale by mine explosions. Fire-damp and coal dust were often considered the greatest evils in coal-mining. All records, however, prove this conclusion to be wrong. The second annual report of the Bureau of Mines gives the loss of life caused by falls of coal and roof in 1910 as 1,310, and in 1911 as 1,321. The reports of Pennsylvania mine inspectors for a period of thirty-three years show that 59.38 per cent of all the accidents underground were caused by falls of roof and coal. Also, the Bureau of Mines shows in its last issue on fatalities that accidents from fall of roof and coal killed more men than any other two causes combined, and that they account for more than half of the deaths under- ground. It seems we are getting too accustomed, taking too many things for granted, running too many risks, trusting too much for the best, and preparing too little for the worst. We must remove the cause; then the effects will cease. However, I can see that a better day is here. The main damaging factors underground are falls of roof and sides. A bad roof is tender and lacks the adhesive qualities to sustain its own weight over comparatively small areas. A roof of any character which is frequently penetrated by well-defined slips and cleats, is characterized as a treacherous roof. The carelessness of men has been one of the main causes of most of the accidents in mining as well as in any other industries. Three Grades of Miners Miners can be classified into three distinct grades, to-wit: the experienced and careful, the experienced and reckless, and the inexperienced. The accidents which the first class usually meet with occur through the carelessness of their co-workers, as well as through accidents which are termed unforeseen, such as falling roof between timbers, and between the timbers and the face of the coal. This may have 'previously given evidence of being absolutely sound and safe, but be released by invisible slips or by sudden outburst of occluded gases in large quantities, as we term big blowers or feeders,

All companies and individuals who embark on a business venture incur costs. For the most part these costs can be conveniently categorised, firstly into capital and operating costs and then into the various elements of these major cost centres. Although the nature of expenditure naturally differs as between industries certain broad cost types are characteristic of all heavy industries. The capital costs of gaining access to an orebody, equipping a new mine, building a treatment plant and perhaps refining and smelting facilities are likened to capital expenditure by a manufacturer on new plant and equipment required for an expansion or new product innovation. Similarly the day to day costs of labour and materials employed in the running of a mining operation can be likened to similar costs in other heavy industry. There is another group of costs that are not so easily categorised. Most industries incur unavoidable costs that do not form part of the direct or capital costs of physical production. These costs include taxes and other payments to government and research expenditure. The mining industry has a particularly heavy burden of non-production costs and it is the objective here to highlight and analyse a few of them. These costs are exploration expenditure, infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax. This is not to suggest that these are the only major non-production costs that the mining industry needs to bear. The industry may incur significant costs for environment protection, land tenure maintenance and on liaising with Government on a wide variety of matters. It is for reasons of subject manageability that the list is confined to the four costs mentioned. For the mining industry, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, royalties and income tax have several distinguishing features. Firstly, they are generally proportionately large costs. Exploration and infrastructure expenditure for example, could well exceed mine development costs. Depending on how royalties are levied, they may be very high in relation to profits earned and many in fact exceed profits. Secondly, except for income tax, they are costs that are generally not payable by other industries. Exploration expenditure is in some respects comparable with industrial research and development. However, because mines are wasting assets exploration is necessary for survival, and it is likely to form a larger part of costs per dollar of profits or sales than R&D. It can therefore be said that exploration is of far more significance to the miner than R&D is to the typical industrial company. Furthermore, unlike exploration expenditure, R&D results are transportable and patents permitting, transferable. The infrastructure burden that miners must carry is unique to the industry. Whereas urbanised industry is not usually liable for the capital cost of power, water, transport, townships and community facilities, the miner must finance these projects himself. Neither the payment of royalties, nor of course, income tax are unique to the mining industry. Royalties are more properly described as a unique charge on some primary industries but however described, they are a charge that manufacturing and service industries do not have to pay. Whilst we all pay income tax, the mining industry's uniqueness derives from the special problem that the industry has in arriving at annual net income in view of the capital intensity of the industry, partly due to expenditure on infrastructure, the indefinite life of capital equipment and its unpredictable residual value, funds expended on exploration and long lead times associated with a mine development. The third distinguishing feature of these costs is that, with the possible exception of exploration expenditure, they are heavily influenced by the policies and actions of Government. As such the industry has a responsibility to promote the industry by emphasising its potential to improve national product including exports and by requesting that the Government provide for the industry in its long term planning and seek its co-operation to prevent the industry incurring inequitable penalties relative to other industries.Finally, exploration and infrastructure expenditure are significant because they are front-end charges on a project. When due allowance is given the time value of money and the deferment of income from a mining development to which they relate, exploration and infrastructure expenditure assume greater importance than the raw money expenditure suggests. For all these reasons, exploration and infrastructure expenditure, mining royalties and mining income tax are worthy of detailed study. This is the purpose of this paper. The objective is to examine the determinants that give rise to them and provide some thoughts on their impact on on-going and potential mining developments and, where relevant, to make some suggestions as to how they may be minimised.

Tungsten metal in fused form and of high purity was prepared by reducing tungstic oxide with redistilled calcium metal in a heavy-walled sealed reactor. Alloys of tungsten with vanadium, molybdenum) chromium, columbium, and tantalum were prepared by coreduction of mixed metal oxides in the same manner. This work was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to investigate new approaches for preparing tungsten and its alloys in high-purity form. The standard method of producing tungsten metal has been the reduction of tungstic oxides by hydrogen. The resulting metal powder is compacted, sintered, and fabricated by powder metallurgy methods. Long experience in this field has resulted in the development of a technology that (by careful control of the variables such as metal composition, particle size, and sinterng technique) is well adapted to producing wire and the small shapes usually prepared from tungsten metal.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mine that uses large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity and distance. The system was also used to provide historical information to plan the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. The Coteau Properties Co. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The North American Coal Corp. The company was formed in 1972 to supply lignite from its Beulah-Hazen coal reserve to a coal gasification project and an electrical generating facility located near Beulah, ND. The reserve consists of a single coal seam between 3 and 7 m (10 to 23 ft) thick. The overburden above the coal is predominately glacial tills and clays and ranges from 6 m (20 ft) to more than 60 m (200 ft) thick.

The compression texture of iodide titanium is determined and found to consist of a [0001] texture rotated 15° to 30° from the axis of compression. As the amount of reduction increases, the angle of rotation decreases. The 0001 rotation showed a slight preference for a <1010> rotation axis. RECENT investigation of the cold rolled texture of titanium&apos; has shown this metal to exhibit a new type of rolling texture. This texture can best be described as a (0001) [10i0] with the 0001 planes rotated approximately 30" to the transverse direction around a <10i0> rotation axis. Rather good results in explaining the cold rolled texture have been obtained by other workers&apos; by examination of the tension and compression textures. No information was found giving the tension texture of titanium. Generally the tension texture of a hexagonal close-packed metal is identical with its wire texture. The drawn texture of titanium has been investigatedh nd has been found to be predominately [10?0]. Since this is the common tension texture of hexagonal metals of low c/a ratio, the explanation of the difference between the rolling texture of titanium and the rolling texture of other hexagonal metals is not indicated by examination of the tension texture. Therefore, the compression texture of titanium should be particularly important in the explanation of the unusual transverse rotation of the 0001 planes found in the cold rolled texture. The compression texture of titanium was examined by Yen.",&apos; His results showed titanium to exhibit the usual [0001] texture up to 85 pct reduction. At higher reduction a double texture appeared in which the 0001 planes were rotated from 10" to 30" from the plane of compression. This change in the compression texture seemed unusual since the tendency for hexagonal close-packed metals is to approach the [0001] texture as the idea compression texture. Mechanical twinning generally occurs over a considerable range of reductions beginning at a rather low reduction. The samples used by Yen in his investigations were prepared by two methods. Compression in a testing machine was used up to a reduction of 85 pct. Compression by compression rolling was used at higher reductions. Since the change in texture occurred at the same reduction as the change in the method of compression, a connection between the two seemed likely. To check this possibility and to locate the position of the change in texture definitely, if it was found to exist, the compression texture of titanium was re-examined. An iodide titanium crystal bar (99.9 pct Ti) produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co. and donated by the Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Div. of the National Lead Co. was used in this investigation. The Dynamics Effects Laboratory at the University of Maryland conducted a series of very small scale tests to measure the impulse delivered to a plate by the detonation of an explosive charge which was buried in saturated sand. These tests were conducted to support a full scale tests series being supported by the Navy (NSWC Indian Head Division) to learn more about loads applied to structures by explosive detonation. For each of the tests being predicted, a series of three tests were conducted at Maryland, one with a 0.203 gm charge, one with a .609 gm charge, and one with a 3.3 gm charge. A high speed digital camera (500 frames per second) was used to record the displacement of the plate as a function of time. From this the initial velocity of the plate was determined and then the impulse delivered to the plate by the explosive. A best fit line through the data was determined for the three model tests conducted and this equation was used to extrapolate the predicted impulse for the full scale tests.

Bench-scale research at the Bureau of Mines has resulted in the successful development of a combination electrorefining-electrowinning method for recycling all the lead in scrap batteries. The method reduces energy consumption and eliminates toxic emissions, in contrast to present pyrometallurgical smelting, and the lead produced is pure enough for use in maintenance-free batteries. Anodes cast from molten lead scrap were electrorefined in 1-and 2-liter plastic cells using an electrolyte composition of 70 g/l Pb and 90 g/l free H2SiF6 (fluosilicic acid). Both reagent-grade and waste H2SiF6 were used. Cathode starting sheets were made from refined lead. Aloes, and later bone gelatin, and calcium lignin sulfonate addition agents were employed. The sludge remaining after separation of the lead metal was treated in a two-step leaching operation to solubilize the lead for recovery by electrowinning. Conditions for electrowinning were essentially the same as for electro-refining, except that insoluble Pb02-Ti (lead dioxide-coated titanium) anodes were used. The best results for both electrorefining and electrowinning were obtained with a current density of 170 amp/m2 and a cell temperature of 25° to 35° C. Cathode purity ranged from about 99.9 to 99.99+ pct Pb. Maximum energy consumption after 3 days, for electrorefining and electrowinning, was 90 and 700 kwhr per metric ton of refined lead, respectively.

Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry&apos;s push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

El presente texto señala la historia y desarrollo económico de la plata como metal peruano en el mundo. El Perú antiguo y tradicional fue productor de este metal desde el siglo XIV. Sin embargo, la mayor parte de esa riqueza fue llevada a la metrópoli española y en consecuencia, se optó por la producción de oro. El Perú produce solo el 0.26 °/o de la producción anual de oro con un valor de U$ cinco millones. Si se lograse reponer el antiguo sistema mundial de monetización de la plata, este sistema recuperaría el valor que tuvo hace 100 años a.C o hasta fines de la Colonia española, o sea la relación de 15 a 1 con respecto al valor del oro.

"A multi-seam underground mining operation employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods provides 35 per cent of Smoky River's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes) from the Smoky River coal field. Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity, which has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief to the area, has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Coal transportation to the central preparation plant incorporates a 3 km long underground conveying system. The company is committed to efficient resource recovery and a safe and healthy working environment. Introduction The Smoky River Coal operations (SRC) are centered in the Smoky River coal field located in west central Alberta, some 360 km west of Edmonton and 20 km from the Town of Grande Cache (Fig. 1). Combined mining operations produce 2 million tonnes per year run-of-mine coal from which 1.65 million tonnes of high quality, low volatile, coking coal are obtained. The underground mining operation, employing mechanized room-and-pillar methods, provides 35 per cent of SRC's annual ROM coal production (2 million tonnes). Surface mines provide the balance. Tectonic activity has resulted in deformed coal seams and a rugged relief in the area. This has provided natural boundaries to discrete mining areas. Background Exploration of the Smoky River coal field took place over four decades commencing in 1926. McIntyre Mines Limited (parent to Smoky River Coal Ltd.}, commenced development of the property in 1968 having secured a long-term contract for the delivery of coal to Japan. Production of underground coal at Smoky River commenced toward the end of 1969 and has been continuous on the property since that time. Originally, two underground mines were opened. Original planning envisaged the use of room-and-pillar techniques to develop blocks of coal for subsequent extraction by longwall retreat mining. Following initial development, two longwall units were established, the first in November 1970 in No. 5 Mine and the second in February 1971 in No. 2 Mine. Difficulties were experienced on both units, and production commitments could not be achieved. The longwalls were discontinued, and mechanized room-and-pillar was subsequently used for all underground mining."

THE amount of published literature in the field of mechanical proper-ties of magnesium alloys is not great; particularly with respect to rolled alloys. Haughton and Prytherch1 have summarized most of the articles to 1937, including their own work on sheet. Although many papers can be found dealing&apos; with the technology of magnesium and the alloys now in commercial use, there does not seem to be any work dealing exclusively with the variation in properties of rolled alloys as caused by changes in alloy composition. Comparison of published data reveals considerable discrepancies in, properties of alloys of the same composition, probably due to differences in the details of working and heat-treating followed by different workers. The purpose of this paper is to study the proper-ties of alloys in conditions where the effect of such differences have been eliminated. It is well known that the strength and ductility of metals are functions of the working and heat-treating they have received, as well as of their chemical composition. In comparing alloys with respect to these proper-ties, therefore, all possible combinations of the variables of the fabrication procedure ought to be carried out on each alloy. One or more of these treatments will produce the highest ductility, or strength, or both. These highest properties would then be selected as characteristic of each alloy, and alloys would be compared on the basis of those properties. Thus a separation of the effect of composition and that of working and heat-treating would be achieved. In this paper, however, a compromise with completeness has been made by carrying out a restricted number of treat-ments. As a consequence, the properties obtained are not necessarily the best that the alloy is capable of exhibiting; but since all alloys have been treated by the same method, the results ought to be comparable. The elements selected for the study comprise a class that will alloy easily with magnesium, and that are relatively cheap. Each was added in different amounts, up to a limit that varied with the element.

In the present work a two dimensional computational model is derived for the description of the time dependent heap leaching process. The flow inside the heap is calculated using the diffusion equations for the flow in porous media. The soil conductivity is also estimated assuming a close packed structure for the grain packing inside the heap. These equations, with appropriate boundary conditions, are solved using a time step splitting scheme. From this calculation the amount of leaching reagent in contact with the ore at any position inside the heap can be calculated and, once coupled with appropriate reaction equations, the amount of metals extracted can be computed and leaching agent concentration updated. The model is tested with available experimental data and the results have shown to be in a very good agreement. The model predicts all the transient features of the data.

Increased awareness and stricter enforcement of regulatory requirements for adequate rehabilitation of surface mining sites has made environmental planning an essential part of strip mine planning. Rehabilitation is site specific and should be based on data which relate to that site. Cost-effective spoil pile design to minimise erosion is an important part of rehabilitation. Spoil pile design is an integral part of strip mine design. QCT Resources Limited has provided a postgraduate scholarship toward research in this area. The controlling factors of spoil pile design are post-mining land use, drainage requirements and degree and rate of erosion. The extent to which mine design is controlled by these factors is determined by regulatory requirements. To plan acceptable rehabilitation programs, erosion processes must be accurately modelled, and a range of erosion prediction models are available. Useful prediction models can be placed in two categories with the first category containing soil loss prediction models which can be used to predict the amount of soil lost from an area over a short or long term basis. Models in this category include the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP), Griffith University Erosion and Sedimentation System (GUESS) and Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS). The second category contains topographic evolution models which give an indication of the long term morphological development of a formed surface subjected to erosion processes. Models in this category include "Topog", Willgoose&apos;s Physically Based Catchment Evolution Model and Areal Nonpoint Source Watershed Environment Response Simulation (ANSWERS). The USLE has been used in the agricultural field for soil loss prediction. To apply the equation to mine sites in Central Queensland, it is necessary to understand the factors affecting erosion at the sites. This understanding should allow the variables of the equation to be quantified. The rainfall factor applied in the USLE is independent of engineering design or soil management techniques. The factor of spoil erodibility is dependent on the material&apos;s physical and chemical properties and can vary from site to site. In the equation, the topographic factor, cover and management factor and conservation practices factor can be varied by design to reduce erosion on rehabilitated areas.
