Currently, a new construction method using a robotic system is widely spreading in construction sites. This study is related to the design of glazing robot?s teach pendant which can improve convenience of handling and hence improve the productivity through the efficient interaction between an operator and a robot while doing glazing works, e.g., curtain wall installing. The suitability of selection and arrangement of control switches was assessed according to mechanical motions of a glazing robot, and design guidelines for improving convenience and productivity were drawn up through questionnaires carried out by site operators. To verify the proposed design guidelines, working time comparison of the proposed teach pendant and the existing teach pendant was executed.

Cambior acquired an initial 50% interest in the Chimo Mine in May 1989 and the remaining 50% in April 1990. Cambior's share of 1989 production was 2121 ounces; the company expects to net 23 750 ounces from Chimo in 1990. Pascalis MineUPDATERenamed the Lucien C. Beliveau Mine at its official inauguration in September 1989, the mine is exceeding forecasts, producing over 11 500 ounces of gold in the first half of 1990. Cambior expects 1990 production to total 34 000 ounces.IntroductionThe Pascalis Mine is located 16 miles east o f Val d'Or, Quebec, and is accessible by a three mile gravel road off highway 117 (Fig. I).The property is wholly owned by Cambior.The Pascalis gold deposit consists o f a sub-vertical diorite dyke 1000 ft long by 30 ft wide containing quartz and tourmaline veins with inclusions of pyrite and native gold . Three vein systems ca n be seen in the deposit , the most important being tensile veins oriented at a right angle to the direction of the dyke and inclined at 40 degrees. These overlapping veins vary in thickness from 4 in. to 40 in. and occur at intervals of six to ten ft. The deposit is, therefore, very difficult to evaluate; a complete evaluation would require drifts over the whole width of the dyke combined with relatively short drill holes (Fig . 2)."

7.1-1. Introduction. The fundamentals of blasting involve both the properties of explosives and of the rock being blasted. While the knowledge of property correlation between rocks and explosives for most effective blasting is far more complete, many quantitative evaluations have been made. Four of the most important explosive properties appear to be energy density, bulk density, rate of energy release, and the pressure-time history of the gases produced. Important rock properties are density and porosity strength, and energy absorption properties, including the effective moduli of elasticity. Rock structure also has a marked effect on its breaking properties, i.e., joints, bedding, fractures, alteration, etc. Several mechanisms enter into rock fragmentation by blasting. These include slabbing, radial fracturing, crushing, and bursting by the gas bubble. All of these factors are closely related to properties of both explosives and rock. Slabbing depends upon the character of the first generated stress wave, whose shape and magnitude are a result of the pressure generated by the explosive, its time history, and the resultant response of the rock, including its ability to sustain the stress wave. Actual slabbing, in turn, is a function of the magnitude and shape of the pressure pulse and the tensile strength of rock. Further fragmentation depends to a great extent upon the amount of gas in the bubble and its energy and pressure. Blasting rounds are best designed by taking the above factors into consideration. This is effectively accomplished by use of cratering curves which relate breakage- parameters to the explosive energy. Optimum depths from single charge cratering curves must be adjusted to changes in shot geometry and related to multiple hole blasting. Blasting damage may occur from either air blast or ground waves, and in the latter ease may be due to direct vibration or to settlement caused by vibration. Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

"One of the most concerns of room and pillar mining system is subsidence of the ground surface due to coal mining particularly in room and pillar mines. Subsidence of ground surface is a result of floor, pillar, or roof failure of the mine. At the same, due to many difficulties associated with surface disposal facilities of coal refuse, some mining companies are trying to use underground space as a disposal storage place. In this study, stability and subsidence analyses of an underground coal mine located in the Illinois Basin are conducted. This room and pillar mine was abandoned and later on was used as a storage place to accommodate the coal fine refuse with slurry backfilling method. The geological stratigrophy and geomechanical properties of the mine floor and roof were collected. Floor and pillar stability analyses were conducted for areas with various extraction ratios. The stability of the mine was evaluated both prior and after slurry backfilling. The floor and pillar stability analyses results of the mine due to moisture exposure after slurry backfilling are discussed. The subsidence potential due to mine failure is also evaluated.INTRODUCTIONA typical lithology of coal seams in the Illinois Basin consists of weak underclay stratum. The immediate weak underclay causes frequent floor instability problems in Illinois underground coal mines. There are two different stages in assessing floor stability of the mines where slurry backfilling is planned. The first stage is during the mining operation when weak underclay layer squeezes under pillar stress and results in punching or bearing capacity failure. The second stage is after slurry backfilling. During this stage, the slurry material soaks non-durable floor layers and causes strength reduction in floor material. Pillar stability conditions should also be taken into account during both the operational period and after the slurry backfilling."

Ferromanganese metasediments in the immediate vicinity of the Mid-Proterozoic Broken Hill Pb-Zn-Ag lodes, have undergone high grade (upper amphibolite facies) metamorphism,to form Mn-pyroxenoid (rhodonite,pyroxmangite) and garnet-rich lithologies. Such lithologies bear compositional (bulk rock,rare earth element)and morphological similarities to recent and ancient ferromanganese hydrothermal sediments of the Pacific.The non-metasomatic,stratiform garnetites are predominantly composed of magnesia-rich, calcium-poor almandine spessartine and quartz, which possess a bulk chemistry comparable to alumina-rich ferrommanganese oxide deposits of the Pacific. Such sediments are attributed to a mixed protolith comprised of clay and ferro-manganese oxides (mainly amorphous goethite with lesser todorockite-birnessite). Manganiferous pyroxenoid rocks are probably derived from alumina-poor ferromanganese cherts,similar to Japanese tetsusekiei.Rare earth element compositions ofBroken Hill garnetites are very similar to those of recent ferromanganese seafloor accumulations, suggestive of some genetic link.

Since the start of mining operations at White Pine in 1953, over 22 miles of drifts have been driven for the purpose of developing the ore body. The drifts, normally driven in multiples of three or five headings, serve as conveyor belt routes, ventilation ducts, equipment and haulage roads, and initial access to mining blocks. Development openings in the flat-lying, bedded ore body are driven in rectangular section from 16 to 32 feet wide and from 8. 5 to 16 feet high. The floor level normally coincides with the bottom limit of the chalcocite values and the roof or back is carried at the most competent stratum adjacent to the top of the ore. A development front consisting of five headings and associated crosscuts is advanced at an average rate of about 100 feet per month using conventional drill and blast techniques and equipment. The cyclic nature of the functions involved in driving the openings and the need to include them in production schedules preclude significant improvements in advance rates using current drill, blast, muck, and haul sequencing.

Coal handling facilities, such as utility plants, coal terminals, ports, manufacturing, processing, etc. Protect themselves against interruptions in coal receipts by maintaining a 60 to 90 day supply in storage. Not too long ago, these storage piles were referred in terms of hundreds or thousands of tons. Today, it is not unusual to have hundreds of thousands or millions of tons in storage. Burn, or shipping and receiving, rates have increased dramatically and storage piles have grown in horizontal as well as vertical dimensions. Fixed systems for delivering and retrieving coal from storage have increased in length and operating capacity and have become highly sophisticated in their operation. With few exceptions, mobile material handling equipment is used to handle all coal beyond the reach of these systems. These machines take excess loose coal from the fixed system to the storage area, place it on the storage pile, compact it, maintain the pile, protect against spontaneous combustion, the spread of fires if they occur, and return the coal to the reclaim system as required, plus many of the small chores around the facility.

Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) has operated an integrated tpy nickel laterite mine and ferro-nickel processing plant since 1972 in the Dominican Republic. The operation includes mining, a processing plant, an oil refinery, and a power plant. Falcondo has improved process efficiency over the years via modernisation and better understanding of the process. The present business environment of high fuel prices and high nickel prices present a challenge and an opportunity to Falcondo's operation. This paper gives an update of Falcondo's process, improvements in energy consumption, factors affecting energy consumption and how Falcondo is facing up to the current business environment.

Culture and leadership go hand in hand, especially when it comes to investing in safety. But the reality is that most safety leaders haven’t been taught the fundamental soft skills needed to lead effectively. In fact, only one in four safety leaders demonstrate effective skills and behaviours. Furthermore, when compared to its peers in other high-risk industries, our research indicates mining has the most room for improvement when it comes to effective safety leadership. In this presentation safety culture, climate and leadership will be outlined. Additionally, research data collected from our clients, across a variety of industries, will be shared to inspire reflection on the value of safety leadership. Finally, strategies to empower leaders and increase safety leadership behaviours will be described.

A computational method for the simulation of mold filling processes is described. The method is based on the representation of the flowing or deforming medium as a collection of mutually interacting parcels of material. Instantaneous positions of individual material parcels are calculated by numerical integration of the dynamic equations, subject to appropriate initial and boundary conditions. So far, the method has been used to produce qualitative simulations of some flowing and deforming systems encountered in mold filling technology, and our findings are summarized herein. In all cases, individual material particle motions can be followed in detail, allowing critical examination of potentially problematic mold design features.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1956 was made under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 120 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1956 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 17 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

The purpose of this paper is to provide some practical commercial advice in relation to issues of access and trespass during exploration. It is not my intention to provide a detailed analysis of the applicable law because this is not the appropriate forum for latin maxims and turgid case studies. Instead I will explain the issues in sufficient detail to enable those who are not familiar,with the legal concepts to understand their obligations and responsibilities in relation to exploration activities. Take as an example a situation where a company (for the sake of attempted light relief, called Rogue Mining) holds an exploration tenement adjacent to one held by Lamb Exploration. In conducting aerial exploration activities over its own tenement Rogue overflies the tenement held by Lamb, doesn't turn off its equipment and accidentally collects data in respect of the adjacent land. In analysing that data it becomes apparent to Rogue that there is a substantial anomaly on the adjacent land of which Lamb is apparently unaware. Rogue subsequently negotiates to purchase an interest in Lamb's tenement.

Season cracking of 70-30 cartridge brass cases of small arms and artillery ammunition has been under investigation at the Frankford Arsenal for many years. The nature of this stress-corrosion failure has been found to be intergranular. Much of this work, however, has been directed toward improvements in method of manufacturing the cases so as to reduce the tendency to season crack and little progress had been made toward finding the source of the chemical agent producing the inter- granular corrosion. Ammonia has been shown to produce season cracking in brass and is known to be present in certain atmospheres, particularly industrial, in sufficient concentration to cause cracking. However, in the case of small arms ammunition, the hypothesis that atmospheric ammonia is the cause will not hold, since small arms ammunition is hermetically sealed during storage and yet occasional lots are found to have cracked after 3 to 5 yr. storage. Much of the early study of season cracking in small arms ammunition was done by Nicholas H. Murdza of the Frank- ford Arsenal. In 1936, he suggested that the corrosive agent might be one of the decomposition products of smokeless powder and mentioned nitrogen oxides specifically. Then in 1937, Murdza suggested that the breakdown of smokeless powder in storage resulted in the formation not only of nitrogen oxides but also ammonia

IN concentrating mills, where several millerals are recovered for realisation in more than one product, various systems are used to express the relative economic value of the work done, and, in the hope that it may prove of use to other operators, the writer will describe a system which, in his opinion, is more complete than any other that he has seen published.The controlling factor in all mill work must be based on the economic result represented by the greatest margin possible between the realizable value of the products and the cost of obtaining same.From a mill-man's point of view these are affected by the following factors:1. Metal contents of ore.2. Grade of products.3. Recoveries.4. Working costs.The grade of ore milled is usually outside the mill-man's control, but this may exercise a considerable influence on the grade of his products, metal recoveries, and revenue per ton of ore. Higher grades or recoveries may be obtained by using a more expensive process, or by additional grinding or reagents, and the economic comparison can only be arrived at by obtaining an analysis showing the monetary value of each variation within the possible limits.In the system to be described, the value of unit variations of metal contents of the ore, grade of products and recoveries are calculated in terms of a monetary unit per ton of ore with the returning charges ruling, and any suitable metal prices. Ore from the Browns deposit near Batchelor, in the Northern Territory of Australia, is a fine-grained polymetallic sulfide ore hosted in graphitic black shale. Minerals of economic significance are seigenite (Co,Ni)4S3, Galena (PbS) and Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with minor Sphalerite (ZnS). Gangue minerals include quartz, carbon and K-feldspar. The grain size is fine, with a significant amount of the seigenite present as Early flotation work determined that a grind size of around 20 microns was required to achieve clean sulfide concentrates. This work recommended oil agglomeration flotation, in which small sulfide minerals were collected, then loosely agglomerated with oil ahead of flotation into a heavily mineralised froth. In the 400 kg/hr prototype plant this froth proved unmanageable. A conventional flotation circuit after grinding to a P80 of 24 microns and using very low flotation pulp densities resulted in an 86 per cent cobalt recovery.The paper analyses further laboratory work which has increased cobalt recovery to 91 per cent by grinding to û250 microns ahead of flash flotation. The real cobalt recovery breakthrough comes from flash flotation of the whole mill discharge rather than the more usual flash flotation of cyclone underflow. Flash flotation tailings are ground to û38 microns and are floated under normal flotation conditions with only the scavenger concentrates being reground to 20 microns.A one tonne per hour prototyping campaign is scheduled to demonstrate the robustness of this circuit.

"Since the first commercial extraction of uranium in the early 1940s, the range of feasible process alternatives has greatly increased. This paper reviews process options to reduce extraction costs, improve efficiencies, effect safer operations, and lessen environmental impacts. Equipment and processes used in the past, in use now, and that could be considered for future use are described.BackgroundTwo billion years ago life on earth consisted solely of single celled creatures of the simplest design (Gould 1989). Incredible as it may seem, uranium fission reactors were operating then also. In what is now western Africa, a series of natural reactors were fueled by rich uranium deposits in contact with underground rivers. Water from the rivers provided the moderator necessary to sustain the nuclear fission chain reaction. These primordial reactors ran down after about 600 000 years (Ontario Hydro 1989).Because it is ubiquitous in the earth's crust, humans have always been in contact with uranium. Mining of uranium, albeit not intentional, is ancient ; uranium minerals were embedded in ore veins mined for metals such as silver and copper.Uranium was discovered in 1789 in Berlin by an apothecary, Martin Heinrich Klaproth, who named the element after the recently discovered planet Uranus. The metallic element uranium, as opposed to its compounds, was extracted in 1841 by the French chemist Eugene-Melchior Peligot. The atomic mass of uranium was calculated to be 120, but the Russian genius Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (famous and welcome everywhere except in Russia, where his liberal politics were detested by the Tsar), found this did not fit into his periodic table, and submitted a value of 240. Mendeleev was close; the exact atomic mass is 238.029.Henri Becquerel's detection of the radioactivity of uranium in 1896excited scientific study of the metal, but virtually no practical use was found for uranium outside of a minimal consumption as a colouring agent for glass and ceramics. Scientific interest intensified in the 19305. In 1933 Leo Szilard patented the concept of the nuclear chain reaction. While walking to work on a fine fall London morning and mulling over the problem of how to release atomic energy, he was stopped by a red light. He stood in thought and conceived the notion of the neutron-activated chain reaction before the light turned green. The patent was filed in 1934, and Szilard assigned it to the British Admiralty in order to keep it secret, in an honourable but ultimately futile effort to prevent the misuse of science (Bronowski 1973)."

Mining as an extractive process alone is outdated and unacceptable to today's environmentally concerned public. Multiple land use must be considered as well. Only through effective preplanning can the full potential of reclamation result in a lasting asset for future generations. The coal industry is now recognizing that reclamation of mined lands is part of the mining cycle that must be planned and carried out in a timely and orderly manner. It is also finding that planning reclamation in advance of mining is cheaper and more effective than waiting until mining is completed. The decision to open a strip mine must be based on the results of studies to determine if successful reclamation can be achieved and whether the economic benefits to the company will be justified(1). Information regarding the physical, chemical, hydrologic and biologic systems operative at the site must be under- stood or reclamation will be a failure. Working together, engineers, management and reclamation specialists should design the actual mining and reclamation plan before mining is begun.

[During the past two and a half sears the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama, with the cooperation of the different coal operators, have been making an extensive studs of coal preparation in the State of Alabama. Considerable time has been devoted to the studs of the washing characteristics of the Mars Lee bed and the various methods used In preparing from it a low-ash coal suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke. One of the phases of this problem is the utilization of middlings products from the washing plants. This paper gives the results of treating jig middlings on a coal-washing table at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Tuscaloosa, Ala. The sample used was secured from the Sayreton washery of the Republic Steel Corporation, Sayreton, Ala. WASHERY PRACTICE The Mary Lee bed is very bony, and operators find it difficult to produce from this bed a washed coal much under 10 per cent ash. Experience has shown that in the preparation of a coking coal from the Mary Lee bed it is best to use a process which permits the recovery of a middlings product. Middlings are desirable because separation according to specific gravity is never perfect, and a middlings product makes possible a low ash in the primary warned coal without excessive losses of combustible in the refuse. The general washery practice on the Mary Lee bed is to crush the run-of-mine coal through some maximum screen size and wash it upon some one type of jig without re-treatment of any of the products made. The maximum size treated varies from 3 inch to J inch. The middlings product from multiple-cell jigs is usually termed "boiler fuel" and when possible is utilized as such. At present the production of boiler fuel is often in excess of power requirements, and the surplus, due to its high ash content, becomes waste.]

PHASE relations in the system CoO-SiO2 have been determined as a basis for further investigations of thermodynamic properties of olivine solid solutions involving Co2SiO4 as a component. Previous data on the system CoO-SiO2 are incomplete or uncertain. Biltz and Lemke1 determined the melting point of cobalt orthosilicate as 1345°C , but Asanti and Kohlmeyer2 have later found a considerably higher temperature, 1420°C. The latter authors also studied melting relations of one mixture on the CO side and two mixtures on the SiO2 side of the orthosilicate composition and sketched a tentative phase diagram for a limited composition range of the system. However, no phase identification was carried out, and the authors left unanswered the question of the possible existence of a stable meta-silicate phase. Greig3 showed that a 90 wt pct SiO2-10 wt pct Co mixture at 1725°C consists of two immiscible liquid phases. The quenching technique was used in the present investigation. Mixtures of high-purity cobalt oxide ("Fisher Certified") and dehydrated silicic acid ("Baker Analyzed") were equilibrated in air atmosphere. The samples were then quenched to room temperature and the phases present were identified by microscopic and X-ray examination. The samples were kept in small envelopes made from thin (0.0004 in.) platinum foil. Thermodynamic data which have become available recently for Pt-Co alloys4 were used to check that the losses of COO from the oxide samples by alloying of cobalt with platinum in the present investigation were too small to change significantly the compositions of the oxide material during the equilibration. A vertical tube furnace with an 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh resistance winding was used in runs up to 1510°C. Temperatures in these runs were measured with a Pt vs 90 pct Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple calibrated against the melting point of diopside (CaMgSi2O6, 1391.5?C). The given temperatures as measured by this technique are estimated to be accurate to *5°C. Quench runs at temperatures above 1650°C were made with a modified Roberts and Morey5 strip furnace, using strip resistors composed of a 60 pct Pt-40 pct Rh alloy. Temperatures were measured with an optical pyrometer which was calibrated against the liquidus temperature of a mixture composed of 10 wt pct CaO, 90 wt pct SiO2 (1707°C). The temperatures measured with this technique have an estimated accuracy of +15°C. The results are shown graphically in Fig. 1. Only one intermediate phase, the orthosilicate Co2SiO4 with olivine-type structure, is stable in addition to the end members cobalt oxide and silica. The melting point of the orthosilicate was found to be 1415" ± 5°C. The metastilicate CoSiO3 is not stable at the temperatures of the present investigation. The two eutectic points in the system CoO-SiO2 where COO plus olivine, and olivine plus silica, coexist with liquid were found to be 72 wt pct COO and 1407°C and 63 wt pct COO and 1381°C, respectively. The melting point of cobalt oxide in air was taken as 1745?C, based on the previous data of Aukrust and Muan.6 Within limits of error (+ 5?C), identical eutectic temperatures to those determined in air were found when two representative mixtures were equilibrated at 1 atm O2 pressure and in an atmosphere of 84 vol pct CO2, 16 vol pct H2. This suggests that changes in oxidation state of cobalt in the condensed phases are not significant as far as their effect on the phase relations are concerned. This inference was substantiated by failure to detect7 any "excess oxygen" (i.e., oxygen in excess of that contained in Co2SiO4) in a sample of orthosilicate composition equilibrated in air 10°C above the liquidus temperature and subsequently quenched to room temperature.
