What exactly does clean coal mean? Mining coal creates dust and releases methane gas. And burning coal liberates CO2 and emits particulates, including SO2 and NOx. Coal creates wastes that are often stored in unsightly and potentially dangerous slag heaps and lagoons. When clean coal technology is discussed, it sometimes seems that creating modern or ?ultra super critical? coal-fired power stations is presented as the main or even the only answer. However, there may be a more holistic approach. Using the energy potential of coal is always going to have environmental impacts. Some of these will be negative. But the need to secure future energy resources demands that society tackle these negative issues and find ways to minimize and offset them.

The following notes have been compiled more for the reason that the district is little known to the outside world for its gold production, than for the hope of giving valuable information. The district of Canutillo lies about 15 miles south of the city of Freirina (1at. 28' 50' S. long. 70" 75' W.), and contains nine principal veins, all within a radius of a mile; 50 or more claims have been located on these veins, and this paper refers chiefly to those belonging to the Anglo-Chilean Exploration Go., Ltd., on which the greater part of the development work has been done. In all probability the mines were first worked by the Incas, who, under Tupac Yupangui, captured the country as far south as the Mauli river, between the years 1430 and 1470, and imposed a yearly tribut,e of gold and copper, which was forwarded by carriers on foot to Cuzco, the Inca capital in Peru. In the year 1535, soon after the time of the Spanish conquest, the stories of these consignments, together with those of supposed precious stones, led Diego de Almargro with a band of 400 soldiers to explore as far south as the Incas had gone, in the hope of finding the source of the precious metal, which he believed to have come from some definite point instead of being, as was afterwards proved, the collection of innumerable districts scattered over the entire length of the country. The method of winning the gold used by the Incas or by the natives whom they forced to work seems to have consisted in removing the ore by hard-wood wedges driven by stone-hammers, while a human shoulder-blade worn along its rounded edge, found in one of the mines, had evidently done duty to its second owner as a scraper or shovel. Over the last few years, the never-ending search for mineral wealth has taken the exploration efforts of Canadian mining companies further and further into the High Arctic and isolated locations where regularly scheduled transportation and communication facilities are nonexistent. Names such as Black Angel, Nanisivik, Asbestos Hill, New Quebec Raglan, Rabbit Lake, and Arvik are today frequently mentioned in mining publications. Twenty years ago, mining in these locations was unheard of, mainly due to logistic problems. However, improvements in the design and use of helicopters, STOL aircraft, and icebreakers in northern areas have helped to overcome these problems, making these locations more attractive to mining companies. Since 1969, when Redpath completed its first Arctic project at Texas Gulf's Scrathcona Sound property on the northern tip of Baffin Island, Redpath has been actively involved in contracting and engineering projects in three general areas: the High Arctic, Ungava and Greenland. A map showing some of these projects is shown in Figure 1. In these areas, permafrost conditions exist from a depth of 274 metres in Ungava to a depth of approximately 610 metres in the Little Cornwallis Island area, with rock temperatures ranging from -5°C to -13°C. Outside temperatures range from a low of -50°C in the winter to a high of 21°C in the summer. High winds in the winter result in wind chill factors lower than -73°C

"INTRODUCTION Water flooding of oil sands in Texas as a means of secondary recovery of oil has been practiced mainly in the north-central part of the State, which includes the old shallow fields in eight counties, extending south through Wichita and Clay Counties on the Red River into Brown County.The Texas Railroad Commission, is empowered ""to promote conservation and prevent waste in the drilling, completion, operation, and abandonment of oil wells"" and ""to issue regulations necessary for fulfillment of these ends,"" granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into the oil-bearing sand on December 7, 1935. The permit was granted after the Commission had conducted a number of hearings, which were attended by many operators interested in that method of secondary recovery. Through December 31, 1944, the Commission had granted 50 permits for water flooding. Of that number, 45 permits were issued for projects in north Texas, the remaining 14 being distributed throughout west and south Texas. By the end of 1944, there were 33 active and 5 abandoned water-flooding projects in the North Texas area, as is in figure I.Oil production in the North Texas area started in 1904 from the shallow sands (ranging from 100 feet to 800 feet in depth) of the Petrolia (or Henrietta) field in northern Clay County. Development was rapid and unrestricted during the boom period from about 1911 to 1918, and considerable waste of both produced oil and reservoir energy resulted."

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

At present, most ore milling is done in tumbling mills, consisting of huge cylinders turning on their horizontal axis. This rotational motion causes the ore charge and the grinding balls to interact by impact, compression and abrasion, to reduce the size of the ore. This method is very inefficient since only around 12% of the energy supplied is used for actual grinding, the rest being used in moving the large mass of balls and ore within the mill. This work aimed at better understanding the milling process by evaluating the movement of the load through the Discrete Elements Method (DEM). First, the number of bodies (balls and ore) moving inside the mill is determined, to correlate to the potential impacts that constitute one of the milling mechanisms. Then, the number of high energy impacts is evaluated to correlate to the bodies in motion. At this stage, a differentiation between grinding media and the ore, as well as between the types of contact taking place in the mill, has to be made. This latter issue is of great relevance since from the five identified contact types (ball-ball, ball-liner, ore-ore, ball-ore and ore-liner) only the last three actually contribute to the milling process, the other two causing structural damage to the mill.

MANY of you who are interested in the manufacture of iron and steel, have no doubt heard of the "Wheeler process for combining iron and steel." Mr. Wheeler has formed a company, styled the "Combination Trust Company," whose business is to grant licenses for the use of this patent process in producing what he calls "iron-clad steel." It has been proposed to apply it in the manufacture of car or wagon axles, also to shafting, having steel cores or centres covered with iron; to tubes of steel with an inner and outer skin of iron ; to structural purposes, such as girders and beams; bridge and tie-bolts, where the strength of the iron and the rigidity of the steel would be desirable. In answer to a request from Mr. Wheeler, permission was accorded him to make some experiments at the rolling mill of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, at Reading, Pennsylvania, with a view to manufacturing some steel-headed rails. In making this kind of a rail two difficulties are encountered. If the iron is brought to the requisite heat to weld properly, the steel is likely to be burned ; if the steel is cared for, to prevent burning, the several layers of iron are not brought up to the proper welding heat. Mr. Wheeler claimed that the steel slab covered with iron which be furnished for the head of the rail could not be injured by any heat to which it might be subjected in the ordinary course of heating the rail-pile. He claimed, also, that by this method the porosity, which he thought was characteristic of all solid rails of Bessemer steel, would be overcome. Four steel slabs were furnished for this experiment, being Bessemer steel of .61 carbon, made at the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, and covered with iron in one of the Pittsburgh mills. The slabs were in section seven inches wide by three inches thick, and the iron covering was one-eighth to three-sixteenths inch thick. Each slab was placed on a pile of iron made up in the ordinary way for a rail fifty-six pounds per yard and thirty feet long. The heating was under the personal direction of Mr. Wheeler, and

ON THE 6TH JULY in the year 1953 an announcement was made to the public that touched off one of the greatest staking rushes in the history of mining in Canada and resulted, in tl1e space of a few short years, in the development of the greatest reserves of uranium-bearing ore in the world. It was ?On this date that the famous "Blind River back-door staking bee" was completed with the acquisition of some 2,000 claims by the Preston East Do me-Technical Mine Consultant teams under the direction of Mr. Franc Joubin and Mr. Robert C. Hart. That story has been told from coast to Coast and is too well known now to re-quire elaboration. Suffice to say that, in the short elapsed time of less tl1an five years from that momentous summer of 1953, three of the Algoma mines are in full production, three more are rapidly nearing full production, five more 1are approaching the production stage, a new hard-surfaced highway, 108, has been built to serve the area, and a brand new, completely planned city, Elliot Lake, is being built to provide the amenities of living to the 22,000 people already in the area.

Reduced downtime and maximized availability of mining machines are the key factors in optimizing production rates. As technology moves industry towards an age of ?intelligent machines? it sets the foundation for change in mining equipment design, functionality, and maintenance. Recent mining machine designs are integrating more and more electronic components into the core functionality of individual piece of equipment due to regulatory and legislative requirements, such as TIER rating, as well as from a safety aspect such as personal detection systems. This paper describes the use of existing on-board electronic equipment to increase machine availability through automated maintenance planning and diagnostic fault-finding capability. The automated maintenance planning takes place on the machine itself in order to be independent of the mine?s infrastructure, while the diagnostic capabilities allow for reduced downtime. The paper also presents a concept to transfer operational data to surface to be able to optimize planning of maintenance and to reduce downtime. Case studies are presented where such systems have been commissioned and are currently in operation, the possibilities of this technology application for the future are examined.

The investigations described in this bulletin are confined to a study of the washing characteristics of bituminous coals. The major part of the work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Engineering Experiment Station of the University of Illinois and the State of Illinois Geological Survey Division between 1918 and 1924, in accordance with the provisions of an agreement between these agencies. The washing characteristics of coals from many of the important coal-producing fields of the Eastern and Central States were examined. The coals of the Pacific Northwest States and Alaska have been studied separately by McMillan and Bird of the Northwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines at Seattle in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington.2 OBJECT OF INVESTIGATION The object of the investigation of coal preparation by the Bureau of Mines has been to promote the production of better prepared coal and to facilitate the correct selection and design of coal-preparation plants by obtaining as complete information as possible regarding the washability of the various types of American coals and the treatment best suited to each. In addition, some attention has been given to the development of new methods of washing coal. The work naturally divides itself into three rather distinct steps: (1) Development of a systematic method of examining and testing a coal; (2) classification of the American coals on a basis of the occurrence of the impurities associated with the coal in the beds; (3) examination of one or more representative coals of each type.

METAL PRICES RISE WITHIN the past nine months, the mining industry of the world has been revivified by a spectacular price advance for the metals. ln fact, practically all geological raw materials have been marked up during this period. Reviving industry started the price rise, but the armaments race among the nations has intensified it. These factors, coupled with our decided building shortage, which must be made up, will probably maintain metal prices at decidedly favourable levels over the next two or three years, or longer. OUR MINERAL CIVILIZATION It is interesting to recall that in the past hundred years, while the white population of the world increased some three ta three and a half fold, the consumption of minerals increased seventy-five fold. In other words, ours is a mineral civilization. If we disregard short slumps, which we will occasionally experience, it seems certain that the bread upward trend in mineral consumption will be maintained for many decades into the future. Nations without reasonably abundant and diverse mineral deposits will eventually become nations without much power. Canada is blessed with a splendid store of minerals. Its mineral industry is now facing an exceptionally rosy future. What of the mineral industry of Nova Scotia? GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ALLOWED TO LAG RN NOVA SCONA Many years ago, when geological science was in? its infancy, much geological study was carried on in Nova Scotia. In 1827, Francis Alger began work on the iron ores in the Bay of Fundy region. In 1886, E. R. Faribault began his series of remarkable papers on Nova Scotia geology. Between these dates, many others published papers on the geology of the Province. The most outstanding of this early group of geologists was Sir William Dawson, whose published works on Nova Scotian geology extended over the period from 1845 to 1891.

VANADIUM was discovered in 1801 by Andres Manuel del Rio, a professor of mineralogy at the School of Mines in Mexico City. Del Rio called the new element erythronium. Later, he decided that this was not a new element but a form of chromium. Not until 1831 did Nils G. Sefström, a Swedish chemist, positively determine that the metal was a new element which he named vanadium, after Vanadis, the Scandanavian goddess of beauty. From 1831 to the 1860's and 1870's, the comparative scarcity and high cost of vanadium restricted its commercial use. Shortly after 1870, more information was obtained on the physical and chemical properties of the element. Thereafter, research on vanadium has dealt largely with its use as an alloying element in steel and nonferrous metals. Vanadium is a widely distributed element in the earth's crust. It is more abundant than many metals but is disseminated in small quantities throughout a great variety of rocks. Relatively few deposits have contained ore of a grade suitable to warrant development for vanadium alone. It is produced in conjunction with uranium, iron, titanium, aluminum, and lead-zinc ores.

Alberta is labouring, and has laboured, under serious difficulties in the marketing of ?her coals, due to a number of conditions which now obtain, but all of which appear capable of solution, and their elimination would insure a very largely increased market for the vast coal resources of that province. It is perhaps necessary to again mention the fact that 15 per cent of the world's coal resources are to be found in Alberta; 21 per cent of that of North America; 72 per cent of that of the British Empire, and 87 per cent of that of all Canada. While we talk largely of the great wealth of Canada, the immensity of her vast natural resources, it is axiomatic that the mere presence of any natural product in a country does not in itself constitute wealth for that country, unless these raw materials can find a market, either in their raw state, or by the process of manufacture. There are many factors, however, which enter into the marketing of any commodity. The chief of these, in my opinion, is price competition. High costs of production materially reduce the radius in which any product can be marketed, and this applies particularly to coal. Mining costs in the province of Alberta are necessarily high at the present time, due in a large measure to the ease with which the 'gopher hole' mine can be opened with small capital.

"A joint venture of Ben C. Gerwick Inc., Sverdrup (now Jacobs) and DMJM (now DMJM + Harris) designed the $779 million seismic upgrade of the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge over the San Pablo Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area and provided construction support to Caltrans. Construction of the marine foundation retrofi t was completed by a joint venture of Tudor Saliba/Tidewater/Koch-Skanska and their subcontractors: Pomeroy Precast Construction, AGRA Foundations, Dutra Construction and Vortex Divers. Construction management and inspection was performed by Caltrans with the support of various consultants. MARINE FOUNDATION RETROFIT SCOPEThe retrofi t design of the submerged foundations included:??A total of 476 tension and compression micro piles (290- 1140 kips or 1290-5071 kN) installed through cored holes through the underwater bells at 31 pier locations??Fourteen 126/150/164 inch (3.20/3.81/4.17m) diameter CISS (Cast-in-steel shell) concrete shear piles (1160- 2660 kips or 5160-11832 kN) installed through new precast concrete pile cap extensions??Twelve CIDH (Cast-in-drilled-hole) shear piles (1060- 2130 kips or 4715-9475 kN) with 150 inch (3.91m) diameter steel shells to top of bedrock and 30 ft (9,14m) long and 11 ft (3.35m) diameter rock socket installed through new precast concrete pile cap extensions The specifi ed post bid test boring revealed deeper bedrock at one pier location allowing deletion of the rock socket. Thus 15 CISS and 11 CIDH shear piles were installed at 11 pier locations - 9 piers with 2 piles and 2 piers with 4 piles. Cut off elevations for the shear piles ranged from 46 ft to 60 ft (14.0m to 18.3m) below mean sea level and cut off for the micro piles was 8 ft to 46 ft (2.44m to 14.0m) below mean sea level. Almost all foundation retrofi ts required work under limited headroom conditions. Underwater construction connections required innovative design details and construction techniques for each pile type. The 11 piers had 22 precast concrete pile cap extensions installed in pairs and connected by either tremie concrete closure pours or by large pipe struts. The precast pile cap extensions were strapped underwater using large steel bands wrapping around the belled piers with grouted annulus. The precast pile caps were founded with 14 inch (355mm) diameter steel pipe piles, which were either support piles or seismic tension and compression piles. The seismic piles were connected in grouted corrugated steel pipe sleeves cast into the new concrete pile caps."

Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian aged sulfide deposit located in the western Brooks Range north of Kotzebue, Alaska. It belongs in the family of black Shale hosted sedimentary exhalite deposits but lacks classic sulfide sedimentary textures. Pervasive silicification, and a significant portion of the mineralization, is replacement in nature. An extensive feeder vein system cuts the footwall and the exhalite package. A Jurassic to cretaceous age compressional event has repeated the ore section through thrust faulting and folding. The orebody contains 77,000,000 metric tons averaging 17.1% Zn, 5.0% Pb and 82 g per metric ton of Ag. Weathering has locally altered the sulfides to sulfates and formed elemental sulfur.

The letter of resignation follows : Gentlemen: About two years ago, I indicated to the President and some members of the Board my belief that the office of Secretary of the Institute should not be a permanent one. It is my observation of events, not only in our own Institute, but also in several sister societies, that too long a tenure of office by the Secretary inevitably leads to a situation which is not good either for him or for the society. This report summarizes the work performed under USBM Contract No. H0155155, "Demonstrating the Noise Control of a Coal Preparation Plant." A Consolidation Coal Company coal preparation plant (the Georgetown Plant) was selected for demonstration of various noise control techniques and materials in a commercially operating plant. At the start of the project, the 1650 tons per hour (tph) plant was surveyed to document the existing sound levels and worker noise exposures. On the basis of the survey, individual noise sources were characterized and assigned priorities for treatment. Four categories of noise control treatments were installed in this plant: ? Resilient impact pads ? Curtains ? Chute liners ? Resilient screen decks. Currently (1977) available resilient impact pads and curtains were found to be suit-able for general use in coal preparation plants; in the Georgetown Plant, they provided significant noise reduction [6 to 10 dB(A)]. The overall performance of the chute liners which also provided useful noise reduction, was strongly dependent on the specific installation. Although the resilient screen decks have the potential for 7 to 9 dB(A) of coal/screen impact noise reduction, blinding and delamination (in composite decks) en-countered at the Georgetown Plant represented major design problems for these products. This program achieved noise reductions of up to 10 dB in various areas of the Georgetown Plant (within the restrictions imposed by the plant's operation) resulting in significant reduction in worker noise exposures.

In presenting a thesis on this subject it is advisable to explain a few of the reasons for its seeming incompleteness. World progress has brought us to a position where approximations are not only to be condoned, but regarded as absolute essentials. Production in anticipation of demand is always accompanied by mistakes on the part of the producers. Only through trial and sometimes erring hypotheses may there be evolved the true course and theory upon which the steady triumphant march of world-wide industry depends. The average person likes to have everything placed ?before him in a clear and convincing manner. It is the impossibility of doing this which, in many cases, arises to confound the writer on shales. All that one can do is to present, as lucidly as possible, the known hypotheses' and theories on the subject and leave the reader to study and work out the truth for himself. Many theories have been advanced on the origin of oil-shales ; some may be correct in certain instances and not in others; however, the writer will attempt no decision as to which are and which are not correct, but .will merely point out the relative merits of each. The figures given for reserves of oil and shale in different countries are only approximations and give but a rough idea of the true conditions.
