The Copper Queen mine is composed of seven divisions which are operated through the following shafts: The workings of the different shafts are connected by motor-haulage drifts on the even numbered levels. The general location of the ore-bodies and workings is illustrated by the vertical projection of orebodies of the district as shown in Fig. 1. The Uncle Sam, Southwest, and Czar workings have many connections to the surface through raises and extensive cracks that were caused by moving ground. These divisions are cool and are ventilated entirely by natural means. The Holbrook is ventilated partly by natural and partly by artificial ventilation, while the Spray, Gardner, Lowell, and Sacramento are ventilated entirely by mechanical means. In some of the divisions mentioned above a considerable quantity of air exhausts through shafts of adjoining properties.

NO DEPRECIATION/GAAPAll calculations and computations relating to the Royalty shall be carried out in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles consistently applied to the extent that such principles are not inconsistent with the provisions of this Schedule and the agreement attached hereto, it being specifically agreed that nothing herein contained shall permit, or be construed to permit, the Operator to deduct any amount for depletion, depreciation, amortization or any deduction that represents a non-cash outlay.Comment: In cases like net profit royalties where recoupment of prior expenditures is permitted, care should be taken to avoid any implication that depreciation may also be taken. It is only logical and equitable that Property Owners should not be permitted an apparent ability to “double dip” with respect to deductions. A provision like this example should accomplish the task. It will be noted that the example specifically contemplates that the negotiated arrangements will prevail over any requirements of GAAP. Accordingly, if the parties agree to an unusual formula for recoupment, it will not be set aside to accommodate GAAP requirements. Under GAAP, revenues and expenditures are accounted for on an accrual basis. In addition, it specifically prohibits the taking of non-cash deductions, which is in keeping with the concept of recoupment.Although in some ways the example states the obvious and could be considered redundant, its presence, especially in provisions contemplating recoupment, makes it clear to the financial people that there may well be some variations from normal practices dictated by GAAP, while at the same time confirming the availability of GAAP to fill any voids.The accounting profession often makes the caveat that application of GAAP is an “art”, not a “science”. GAAP do not provide a cure-all and can create problems that will have to be addressed. For example, GAAP contemplate that asset costs are to be reduced by investment tax credits, which can cause a problem for a payor with more than one mine."

Mechanical sampling provides a definitive value for the product sampled but the results are not instantaneous, meaning that decisions on process control can only be made hours after the sample is taken. Chemicals are added, tailings are sent to waste, stockyards are laid and the data for the decision-making is historical. Online analysers provide instantaneous information, allowing operators to make immediate and cost-saving decisions on the process. However, pending the specific online analysis application, there is a need for reference sampling for dynamic calibration/bias updating of the analysers so that they can deliver the desired precision and accuracy. What would be the economic justification for combining mechanical sampling with online analysis to reduce laboratory costs and provide immediate process control with certainty of accuracy? "Water is increasingly being recognised as a material business risk that many companies are still not well-equipped to deal with. Despite a raft of water-risk focused initiatives, methodologies and guidelines, the challenge of managing the strong link between the technical and operational water issues, along with the growing external challenges and interests in water, remain a significant risk to a companyÆs ability to deliver value.This paper provides an overview of the key lessons learnt from ERMÆs experience of working with companies across a range of water sensitive industry sectors, in particular, the mining and oil and gas sectors, to develop and implement practical approaches to manage business critical water risk. These examples highlight the importance of managing water risk by linking technical and operational aspects of water management - with the longer term strategic and social license aspects. Four key ingredients were identified that are central to providing companies with a leading edge in the successful mitigation of water risk: understanding and evaluating water risk including the technical and operational aspects of water management, plus the longer term strategic and social aspects articulating a strong business case that prioritises water risks and their financial exposure to the organisation constructing a clear roadmap that practically links the water strategy objectives with on-the-ground implementation and action building capacity in the organisation to manage, engage and coordinate on water to mitigate risk.CITATION:Ringwood, K and Tang, A, 2013. THIS paper deals specifically with heading-driving as distinguished from the broader term tunnel-driving. A heading is a pilot or path-finder for the main tunnel. Some headings are complete tunnels in themselves; that is, conditions at times warrant driving a heading the full diameter of the proposed tunnel. A tunnel 10 ft. in diameter might be driven to advantage through a single heading, provided the nature of the material admits, but it usually pays to drive rock tunnels of large diameter through the headingand-bench system. Much depends upon the material, as in soft ground tunnels of much larger diameter are driven in a single heading.

In its, effort to combat waterlogging and coil salinity, the later and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling and water sampling, since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline ground-water-zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh ground water containing generally, less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh ground water extends to depths of 1,500 feet and more. Saline ground water occurs downgradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas and, presumably, underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The ground waters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters, near sources of recharge, to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in Dera Ismail Khan District sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline ground-water zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, downgradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the processes of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer.

"DEVELOPMENT of oil emulsion mud dates back to the early days of rotary drilling when oil was added to the drilling mud solely for the purpose of freeing stuck drill pipe. After the drill pipe was freed, and drilling resumed, this oil was considered a contaminant. Efforts were made to remove the oil but some of it remained and was emulsified with the drilling mud, thus forming a mechanical emulsion.During the late 1930's, operators found that adding crude oil to drilling muds seemed to alleviate 'sticky-hole' problems and so oil was allowed to remain in the mud. This practice was adopted when it was found that faster drilling rates and longer bit life were obtained. These observations led to the development of emulsion drilling muds. During the past five years their application has become more widespread because of the lower fluid losses obtained, greater lubrication qualities, faster penetration rates, and generally better hole conditions.An emulsion may be defined as a two-phase system consisting of a mixture of either finely divided oil droplets in water or of finely divided water droplets in oil. The surrounding liquid is known as the continuous phase. The emulsifiers reduce the interfacial tension, making the droplets tend to repel each other so that they remain dispersed and stabilized. These emulsions are classified as oil-in-water or as water-in-oil, depending upon whether water or oil, respectively, is the continuous phase. Briefly, close inspection shows that they consist essentially of globules of• the one liquid suspended in a continuous mass of the other liquid. Oil emulsion muds are usually of the oil-in-water type. Two basic types of emulsifiers •commonly used in Canadian muds are soaps and lignites."

Sulphur, with its multiple oxidation states, play critical roles in many processes, ranging from regulating enzymes in plants, to acidifying aquatic systems, and to affecting the global climate. Most of non-ferrous smelters have been contributing to reduce atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide to acceptable levels, converting it to sulphuric acid and/or gypsum. However, some amount of SO2 gas is still emitted from isolated smelters. Furthermore, sulphuric acid is competing with involuntary elemental sulphur in the market. This situation puts the non-ferrous metallurgical industries to develop a new sulphur fixation process. This paper briefly describes the new technologies for fixation, followed by the novel proposal to convert SO2 gas to elemental sulphur using organic materials. Finally, the feasibility will be presented technologically and economically.

For effective backfilling, a system with the 13 features covered under the section: effective backfill systems, is required. Effective backfilling cannot be done with systems that are badly designed, outdated or overextended. But in cases where the requirements for effective backfilling are overlooked, the shortcomings of such systems may wrongly come to be regarded as limitations to the capabilities of backfilling per se. Mining is currently done to depths of 3500 m, and is to go deeper since the gold-bearing reef extends down to 4000 m and 5000 m below surface. Effective backfilling systems will be required at such depths, and with suitable design this can be achieved. Mining the narrow tabular orebody of a typical South African gold mine is described at the start of this paper, then cycloned backfilling is discussed in general, and its effectiveness (most of the fill placed in South Africa is cycloned backfill or ædeslimed tailingsÆ).

The fluidized solids technique for the calcination of phosphate rock has been well established for over 10 years. This paper is intended to review the recent performance of many of the Dorr-Oliver FluoSolids* calciners. In addition, design features of these three compartment refrac¬tory construction reactors will be described and a comparison made with fuel requirements for single compartment calcination. Also presented will be certain, aspects of the use of the rock including a discussion of non sulfate sulfur in the rock. A system is described for producing a blended mixture of calcined and uncalcined rock.

"So many talks, so little time.One of the toughest challenges associated with attending the SME Annual Conference and Expo is deciding how to allocate one’s resources. After accounting for keynote and plenary sessions, committee meetings, networking events, luncheons and exhibits, attending even one of the 109 technical sessions and more than 600 technical paper presentations can be a labor of love. Many, however, managed to make it to many of the sessions, including the mineral and metallurgical processing technical session on solvent extraction, ion exchange and electrowinning.At one point, that room was seated to near capacity, with a considerable number of the audience members standing by the walls at the back. Brittany Valera of Freeport-McMoRan Inc. was one who came early and enjoyed the session in its entirety. "Everything was pretty exciting," she said. "I really liked the modular plants. I think the future of mining, just like what we talked about in there, lies in thinking about things like remote locations, lifetimes of plants, anything that would be reusable and sustainable; and lower-cost and user-friendly would be really beneficial."Michael Moats, associate professor of metallurgical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, started off the session by presenting on behalf of post-doctoral student Alex Luyima, who, like many before him, had been snapped up by industry and is now working for a secondary-metals refining company in Texas. Their team studied the nucleation and growth mechanism of copper on stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate in the absence and presence of chloride ions and three commercial organic additives: Hydrostar 4208, DXG-F7 and Cyquest N-900. Currenttime data were analyzed using known models, with reference to scanning electron microscope images. Good agreement was achieved between the models and SEM micrographs of deposits at a commercially relevant current density of 30 mA/ cm2. The addition of 20 mg/L chloride was found to increase the size and reduce the number of nuclei. The addition of 2.5 mg/L of each additive did not change the mechanism, but all three reduced the size and increased the number of nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the substrate with smoother deposits produced in twohour electrowinning experiments. N-900 had the best deposition coverage while DXG-7 was the easiest to dissolve."

RESEARCH is undertaken to find out what must be done when what we are doing now is no longer adequate. To accomplish this end, researchers apply the truths of nature to industrial evolution. A survey conducted with the co-operation of 58 universities and colleges offering degrees in mineral engineering was the basis for the table accompanying this article. This survey was undertaken with the object of presenting to faculties and student bodies, as well as to industry, all available information on what action the educational institutions of the country have taken to provide the properly trained researchers so vitally needed. A hoped for result is that the great variety of opportunities available will encourage some undergraduate students to continue in their field beyond attainment of a B.S. degree.

During the past decade, operators and researchers have worked toward a better understanding of the mechanisms operating in flotation. As reported by W. J. Trahar in 1981, this work commenced with the operators determining a relationship between recovery and particle size. They defined three particle size ranges, that being fine, intermediate and coarse. It was noted that the fine and the coarse ranges had slower flotation rates than the intermediate range as demonstrated by their lower recoveries.

The value of processed materials of mineral origin was estimated to have exceeded $310 billion in 1990. U.S. raw nonfuel minerals mine production in 1990 was estimated at $33 billion, a 3.1 % increase over that of 1989. The value of minerals production increased in all but 3 of the last 30 years. The metals component of production value has fluctuated much more than the industrial minerals component. This reflects the greater volatility of metal prices. In 1990, total employment in metal mining continued the increase that began in 1987. This growth was partially offset by a slight decline in employment in industrial mineral mining, resulting in an overall in-crease of 1.1 % to 179,100 in 1990. Continuing high (by historical standards) metal prices led to expansions at some mines, as well as opening or reopening of additional mines, resulting in increased employment.

Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. INTRODUCTION A major change in financing exports in recent years has been the decreased importance of subsidized export credits, following the commitment of the OECD countries to eliminate the subsidy element. Subsidized export credit rates are now often more expensive than market rates as the financing for exporters has decreased in volume and importance. The forfait market, in recognition of this decreasing importance, provides a rapidly expanding source of nonrecource finance for exporters. The following is a step by step guide to what it is, how it works, its benefits and problems. WHAT IS FORFAITING? Forfaiting is not new. It has been used in Europe for about 25 years to provide export finance for both capital goods and commodities without recourse to the exporter. Although long the preserve of exporters in Germany, and more lately Italy, forfaiting is now used increasingly by exporters in Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Scandinavia. It is a fairly simple operation with easy straight-forward documentation. The transaction involves the purchase by the forfaiting bank of a bill of exchange or a series of bills without recourse to the exporter. These bills will have been drawn by the exporter, accepted by the importer, and will usually bear the unconditional guarantee of the importer's bank. They are normally drawn payable at intervals during the credit period agreed between importer and exporter and are purchased at a discount by the forfaiter. The exporter thus obtains his cash payment and the importer receives his credit period. The forfaiter collects the amount of the bills as they mature directly from the importer. Credit periods vary, depending upon the type of goods and the country and commercial risk of the importer. The period is generally between one and five years with six monthly maturities. The usual forfait currencies are US dollars. Deutschmarks and Swiss francs and others, such as sterling, French francs, and the Scandinavian currencies are being used more frequently. CHOOSING FORFAITING Most types of financing require the continued involvement of the exporter in the financial side of the transaction during the credit period. Forfaiting has certain comparative advantages. In particular, it is possible to forfait 100 percent of the risk without recourse to the exporter, unlike government sponsored export finance schemes, where some retention of the risk by the exporter is required. In addition, exports from country sources do not present problems and forfaiting can also cover trade within the EEC. Other benefits for the exporter are: (a) The exporter's balance sheet is improved; debts are turned into cash thus improving the liquidity of the company and enhancing its cash flow. And there are no contingent liabilities for bills of exchange. (b) If the sales contract is in a foreign currency forfaiting removes the risk to the exporter of adverse movements in foreign exchange during the credit period. (c) Fluctuations in interest rates during the credit period can be ignored since in forfaiting the transaction is usually done on fixed interest rate terms on a discount basis. (d) The political and transfer risks are taken by the forfaiter. (e) The commercial risk is taken by the forfaiter. (f) The costs of administration and collection etc. during the credit period are removed.
