The classes of ore deposits in the mountain province of Colorado that have been the most productive in the past and that offer the greatest promise for the future are: (1) disseminated or stockwork molybdenum deposits associated with Tertiary stocks; (2) combination precious- and base-metal veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks; and (3) base-metal replacement deposits and veins in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Veins in Precambrian rocks, including precious metal-bearing sulfide veins, gold-silver telluride veins, and tungsten veins, have been mined extensively in the past, but their aggregate output has been far subordinate to that of the groups named above, and the outlook for major output from them in the future is poor. Principal ore deposits of south-central Wyoming are sedimentary iron ores of Precambrian age and uranium deposits in Tertiary sedimentary rocks. Precambrian deposits of several kinds are scattered through the mountains of both states. The most promising of these, based on present indications, are vanadiferous titaniferous magnetite in southern Wyoming and southwestern Colorado and thorium-niobium rare-earth deposits associated with alkalic intrusive complexes in Colorado. Most of the mining districts of Colorado are in the Colorado mineral belt, a generally narrow but somewhat irregular belt that extends northeastward across the north-trending mountain ranges and the north-northwest trending geologic grain of the state. The belt is characterized by intrusive rocks of Laramide and younger age and by ore deposits, and it occupies environments ranging from Precambrian crystalline rocks through Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks to Tertiary volcanic rocks. Two ages of intrusion and ore deposition recently have been recognized in the mineral belt. One is Laramide (late Cretaceous and early Tertiary), and the other is Oligocene. As interpreted herein, the major replacement deposits and most of the sulfide vein deposits in Precambrian and sedimentary rocks are Laramide in age, and the molybdenum deposits, the tungsten and the gold telluride veins in Precambrian rocks, and the precious- and base-metal veins in volcanic rocks are Oligocene in age. In general, the Laramide deposits are mesothermal in aspect, and the Oligocene deposits are principally epithermal. The existence of two mineralization stages, in considerable part characterized by different suites of metals, has many applications in exploration.

INTRODUCTION The San Manuel mine of Magmacopper Company is located approximately 72 km northeast of Tucson, Arizona. The mine, concentrator, smelter, electrolytic refinery and continuous rod casting are located on the west side of the San Pedro River valley. Ore Production: 58 1W mtpd Production To Date: Over 340 000 000 mt since 1956. Ore Grade: 0.70% net sulfide cu. As conceived at the present time, the San Manuel ore body is the lower half of what was originally an elliptical (In cross sect ion) cylinder same 2400 m long with major and minor cross sectional axes of 1500 m and 760 m. After emplacement, the cylinder was diagonally sliced along its long dimension by the San Manuel fault, which separated it into halves, moving the upper half same 2500 m down dip and bringing a wedge-shaped blanket of tertiary conglomerate into position over the lower segment of the cylinder. The lower segment is the San Manuel ore body. The upper part, moved down dip, is the Kalamazoo ore body. Originally, these were one ore body. The San Manuel ore body is a structurally weak and highly fractured quartz monzonite, the principal ore minerals being chalcopyrite, with small amounts of molybdenite. The present mining method is full gravity diagonal retreat panel caving by block. This is shown on Figure 2 , (Block Sequence 56, 57, 58, 59 --on the following page.) The ore mined is hoisted to the surface for transportation to the concentrator. BLOCK CAVING MINING SEQUENCE HISTORY The San Manuel mine was planned and developed as a full gravity block caving mine. It continues as a full gravity block caving mine. Since its initial start, the major changes in mining have been in the areas of ground support, rate of draw and undercut sequence. Ground weight resulting from block caving plays a dual role. It can cause extensive damage to ex- traction openings, yet it is necessary to break the ore into easily handled size. The ground- weight problem resolves itself into finding ways to make it manageable. The initial early ground support in the production areas consisted of timber sets and various combinations of steel and timber sets. This sup- port system proved unsatisfactory and a new support system utilizing concrete was developed. Concrete support, 30 cm to 45 cm thick, proved satisfactory. Rates of draw were experimented with. A draw rate of 45 cm to 61 cm (32 to 45 mt) per draw point per day was determined as optimum in con- trolling ground weight. Undercut sequence or mining sequence was recognized as a major contributing factor to ground weight. This is the most difficult factor to change. The lead time from primary development to undercut can be as much as two years. Initial Checkerboard Pattern The initial undercut sequence was in a checker- board pattern (Figure 2). MANY improvements have been made in recent years in the milling of industrial minerals and it is the purpose of this paper to review some of the more important innovations that are now being used in the preparation of these products. Some of the observations which will be made have been prompted by what was seen on a recent trip to industrial mineral milling plants in the north and central sections of the eastern United States. The flotation plants visited were those of the Valley Forge Cement Company at West Conshohocken, Pa., the International Agricultural Corporation at Mount Pleasant, Tenn., and the Aluminum Ore Company at Rosiclare, Ill. Besides these, sand plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, coal-cleaning plants in Pennsylvania, pyrophyllite, mica, feldspar, clay, and kyanite plants in North Carolina, and a zinc mill and the Tennessee Valley Authority ceramic laboratory in Tennessee were visited. The milling of industrial minerals can be considered under three broad headings, namely, crushing, grinding, and purification. Usually there is both a separation and grinding problem in treating an industrial mineral, but the problems are distinct, although sometimes a separation is made while grinding, as in the case of a Raymond throw-out mill, which grinds and at the same time throws out most of any hard material present in its feed.

Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, exceeded only by oxygen. Silicon dioxide forms a crystalline structure of repeating SiO2 molecules which form characteristically hard, durable crystals. As a result, crystalline silica is Ubiquitous in the crustal rocks, sediments and the mineral products derived from mining. An examination of the history of studies that identify silica as a human and animal carcinogen is presented in the context of the development of a public health policy in California. The implications for the cost of conducting aggregate and other mining operations in the state are discussed.

The development of the traditional converting process performed in a PeirceSmith or Hoboken converter is limited by the investment magnitude associated to the fulfillment of the environmental regulations. Thus, the continuous converting process rather than a conceptual process alternative is becoming a necessity for a smelter facing limited converting capacity and/or lacking of fulfillment of the environmental regulation with its maximum converting capacity. The objective of this paper is to present the progress of the Codelco continuous converting process evaluated at pilot-scale level when converting solid mattes or white metal into blister copper. These tests allowed for gathering of relevant data to be considered for a new stage of evaluating the Codelco continuous converting at industrial-scale test. The pilot-scale tests were done in a Teniente Converter pilot scale unit at the Codelco Norte Smelter. The results of processing solid copper mattes (65-75% Cu) and producing low sulfur content blister copper with production of a constant S02 gas concentration, and the production of liquid slag with low copper solubility was achieved and is discussed in the present paper.

For too long we, as an industry, have borne the brunt of irrational claims, poor science and even worse, journalism with regards to our affect on the environment. To some of us, the overwhelming media attention on greenhouse warming, the polluting outputs of mineral processing or unthinkable depletion of natural resources has left us embarrassed and more unfortunately has turned bright young people away from a career in the minerals industry.This paper shows the hypocrisy associated with an element of the green movement and dispels some general myths on mining disseminated by radical environmentalists.The fallacy of the greenhouse warming effect will be scrutinised by common sense and the mining industryÆs use of land will be discussed and put in proper perspective.Problems associated with safety and emissions and the means to overcome such are discussed briefly.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a critical mineral is one that is essential to the economic well -being of a nation and whose supply may be disrupted due to geological, geopolitical or environmental factors (Nassar et al., 2020). For example, REEs are critical to the production of electricvehicle motors as well as wind turbines, yet China’s share of their global production rose to more than 95 percent in 2010 (IEA, 2021). China’s share has since declined, with production quotas dropping to nearly 70 percent by 2023 (Statista, 2023). This and similar situations with many of the critical minerals raise deep global concerns about supply-chain vulnerabilities (Bauer et al., 2011). Critical minerals are used in the production of renewable energy, electronics, agricultural products and common household items (McLemore, 2020). As the global demand for these minerals continues to grow, it is not sufficient to rely solely on scaling up production from existing operations. While increasing production from known deposits can provide short-term relief, long-term resource security requires discovering new, economically viable mineral resources. One of the most effective ways to secure future supply is through mineral exploration, which increases the global inventory of critical minerals and also minimizes risks posed by market monopolies and political instability. The major challenge of mineral exploration lies not only in identifying mineralized deposits but also in determining whether discovered concentrations are sufficient to warrant further investigation and development. A fundamental concept in this decision-making process is using cut-off grade. In this article, cut-off grade refers to the minimum concentration of minerals required to justify further exploration efforts based on factors such as type and size of mineral deposit, mining and processing technologies, associated byproducts/coproducts and the market price of these minerals. Typically, economic cut-off grades are used to determine whether a mineral deposit can be mined profitably. However, this article focuses on preliminary cut-off grades needed to establish whether the amounts of critical minerals within a deposit are high enough to justify further exploration and detailed evaluations. By comparing mineral deposit grades, size, production and extraction technology, and other economic factors with established and active mines, exploration teams can estimate cut-off grades that justify further exploration.

ONE of the major purposes of the Institute is to "maintain ... a library of books relating to subjects cognate to the sciences and arts of mining and metallurgy." In conformance with this purpose the Institute maintained its own library for a number of years until 1912 when it was merged with the libraries of the other Founder Societies. At that time the A.I.M.E.'s share of operating expenses was wholly covered by the income from a $100,000 gift from James Douglas. But interest on the Douglas Library Fund has declined from 51/2 per cent to 31/4 per cent; the library has grown from some 50,000 volumes in 1913 to more than 170,000 in 1945, with consequently increased costs; and its costs nave otherwise risen. The Institute today contributes to the library annually about 65c per member, of which about 25c is income from the Douglas Fund, or a net charge, from regular income, of 40c per member. Reducing electricity cost is important for energy intensive industries such as the iron and steel industry. With the implementation of time-of-use (TOU) electricity price, plenty of attention has been paid to the optimal management of byproduct gases. The time-of-use (TOU) electricity price is the practice of implementing different prices for different times of use. It is possible to reduce electricity cost by adjusting the amount of product gases stored or used for power generation throughout the day. In this paper, a novel mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model concerning the TOU electricity price is proposed to optimize byproduct gas use. Compared with previous models, this model considers the optimal load shift between gasholders and boilers under TOU electricity price. The case study of a steel plant demonstrates that the electricity purchase cost can be reduced by more than 30% after optimization.

Titanium-titanium boride whisker (TiBw) composites are emerging as strong candidate materials for advanced applications within the automotive, aerospace and defense industries. Although increasing TiBw volume fraction improves the specific stiffness and wear resistance of titanium, it is usually on the expense of fracture toughness and ductility especially at increased volume fractions of reinforcements where whiskers interlock. This research addresses strategies for microstructural design that may overcome these shortcomings, by generating titanium composites that are locally reinforced with TiBw through in-situ reaction in segregated regions of the microstructure and separated by ductile Ti matrix. The effect of varying composite reinforcement particle sizes (i.e. size of the reinforced regions) on the pressure-less sintering of these dual matrix composites is discussed. Electric current activation was also used to generate high density dual matrix composites and a new simultaneous imaging and modulus mapping technique was used to characterize these unique microstructures.

Conventional ferronickel smelting has five main steps: Drying, calcination, prereduction, smelting and refining. In the scope of the current work, smelting experiments were conducted using Sivrihisar laterite ores (1.26% Ni) of Turkey. The ore samples previously subjected to drying, calcination and prereduction stages were smelted in alumina crucibles in a laboratoryscale horizontal tube furnace under argon atmosphere. Smelting experiments were performed at 1500, 1550 and 1600 oC. The amount of excess coal used in prereduction step was another variable. Sivrihisar laterite ore is a limonitic one with low MgO composition. Therefore, MgO was added to the smelting charge as a flux. The effects of experimental variables on metal Ni content and slag composition were investigated.

"Cayeli Bakir Isletmeleri is an underground copper-zinc mine in turkey. The ore is highly variable with feed grades ranging from 1–4 per cent copper and 1–10 per cent zinc. Due to this variability, ore characterisation and blending strategies are crucial for performance optimisation.This paper presents a case study for a multidisciplinary approach to process optimisation, integrating Geometallurgical and advanced control methods to achieve optimised plant performance. The results from comprehensive metallurgical tests and surveys were used to develop a mathematical model utilising SGS’s Integrated Geometallurgical Simulator® (version number 2.5.24.0). The model was employed to determine the most appropriate operational settings required to ensure that optimised grades and recoveries are achieved for each ore type.SGS’s Modular Expert Technology (MET) expert system was then implemented to target these optimum operational ranges utilising online grade and froth velocity measurements. During fiscal year 1966 the Bureau of Mines published 99 scientific and technical papers and engaged in 67 research projects on petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. A basic appropriation of $3.4 million was supplemented by $1 million in cooperative funds from other Governmental agencies and industry groups. Petroleum conservation was advanced by development of scientific knowledge and improvement of technologic methods in both the extraction and utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and oil shale. Experimental work was carried out at research centers in Bartlesville, Okla., and Laramie, Wo., and in laboratories in Morgantown, W. Va., and San Francisco, Calif. ACHIEVEMENTS IN FISCAL YEAR 1966 Bureau of Mines--Petroleum Research in fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965- June 30, 1966) was involved in many public issues--air pollution, peaceful uses of nuclear explosives, utilization of oil-shale resources, computerization of recovery-stimulation techniques, and fuels for supersonic airplanes. Scientific contributions included compositional studies of petroleum and oil shale, determination of thermodynamic properties of petroleum compounds, development of analytical techniques, and correlations of petroleum properties with geologic occurrence. Technologic advances included rock-fracturing research, in situ combustion studies, waterflood techniques, use of radio-tracers to study stability of petroleum fuels, and hydrogenation as a tool to prepare shale-oil products.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

INTRODUCTION The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) is the largest water wholesaler in southern California. Its service area spans the major urbanized portions of Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties. More than 15 million people are serviced by Metropolitan through its 27 member agencies. The primary sources of Metropolitan's water supply are the Colorado River Aqueduct (CRA) and California's State Water Project (SWP). Currently, planning and design level studies are underway by Metropolitan to expand the water storage and conveyance systems within the service area for the purposes of providing increased efficiency and flexibility to manage limited water supplies, improving water quality, and increasing system reliability. The system reliability issue is particularly significant because the conveyance facilities from both the CRA and the SWP must cross the active San Andreas fault. This fault is considered to be the source fault for the anticipated "Big Earthquake" in southern California. To meet these objectives, Metropolitan's expansion plans involve a major new storage reservoir, new large diameter pipeline and tunnel conveyance facilities, more efficient utilization of existing groundwater basins, and an aggressive public awareness and conservation program. This paper focuses on the planning studies that have been carried out for over 50 miles of tunnels being considered for several of Metropolitan's proposed conveyance systems. These tunnels have ranged in length from a few hundred feet to over 42,000 feet, with depths of cover ranging from a few tens of feet to over 3,000 feet, and finished diameters ranging from 10 to 20 feet.

Underground raises and slots are a vital part of underground blasting operations. Raises and slots are vertical shafts or openings used for ventilation, ore passes, or creating voids in stopes. In the author’s experience, raise and slot designs can vary significantly from operation to operation or even within a single operation, sometimes for reasons unknown. The results of the various designs can differ depending on drilling accuracy, geology, and the explosives used in the design. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the recommendations found in published literature on raise and slot design in one document, while incorporating some of the author’s own experience with optimizing raise and slot designs in underground operations. Some inspiration is also included from burn round designs; small versions of raises drilled horizontally in development blasting rounds. This document includes discussion points on drillhole diameter and depth, pattern design and relief requirements, explosive types and loading recommendations, and timing. Ultimately, this document can be useful to those looking to design a raise or slot blast for the first time or for those looking to improve on the results from the raise and slot blasts used at their operations.

"The concept of risk is well established in the mining industry. It is acknowledged when estimates of reserves are expressed as proven or probable, when mining and metallurgical recoveries are applied to the ore, and when contingencies are added to costs. However, it is difficult to provide a quantitative assessment of risk. The significant sources of risk in a mineral project and how these are addressed in project evaluations are discussed. The discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.IntroductionThis paper examines the components of the discounted cash flow discount rate and proposes a method of estimating project-specific discount rates. The motivation for this work comes from experience of project evaluations in which owners and purchasers had agreed on virtually every aspect of the evaluation except how much the project was worth. Agreement was reached on reserves, grad~, recovery, capital costs, operating costs, taxes, and, by combining these components, even on the fmal cash flow values. The only difference in opinion concerned the discount rate to be used in the calculation of the net present value. Depending on the life of the project, such differences of opinion can cause a variation of more than 50% in the value placed on a project! This is illustrated in Figure 1."

Probably no year in the history of the United States showed greater progress in the mineral industries than 1916. Although this progress was undoubtedly stimulated by the war in Europe, which caused extremely high prices for some of the metals, yet the fact remains that mining is being regarded more as a business and less as a speculation, and the benefits of business methods are becoming evident. Practices that were almost universal a few years ago have been largely abolished, the mining public has been brought to recognize the folly of wasteful and dangerous methods, and there is a gratifying unanimity of opinion in regard to the conservation of life and health, as well as of our mineral resources. The people of the United States realize more fully than ever before the extent and value of the country's mineral resources and the possibilities that await intelligent and well-directed efforts at utilization. In the past, economic reasons caused deposits of valuable metals and industrial materials to lie idle; commercial reasons, many of them not truly economic, led to the waste of valuable constituents in many ores; the recovery of minerals from the ground was too often incomplete and accompanied by uncalculated loss; and the treatment of ores in mills and smelters saved altogether too Iowa proportion of the metals sought. Now better methods are being tried on every hand, and the unparalleled record of the year is largely due to the success of these efforts. According to the preliminary estimates of the United States Geological Survey the output of metals and minerals in this country in the calendar year 1916 had a total gross value of slightly more than $3,000,000,000. Through the hearty cooperation of the State coal-mine inspectors, the bureau is able to present in this paper a a complete statement of the coal-mine fatalities occurring throughout the United States during the calendar year 1919. The reports received from the inspectors for the year just closed show a reduction of 10.58 per cent in coal-mine fatalities as compared. with 1918, while in 1918 the reduction was 4.3 per cent from 1917 figures. The total number killed was 2,307 in 1919 and 2,580 in 1918, a reduction of 273. There was a decrease of 128, or 25 per cent, in fa tali ties resulting from mine cars and locomotives, and a decrease of 198, or 15 per cent, in the fa tali ties due to fall of coal or rock. Surface accidents show a decline of about 25 per cent as compared with the previous year. There were, however, increases in accidents due to gas and dust explosions and also explosives. There occurred during the year nine disasters in which five or more men were killed, representing a total of 201 fatalities. The worst disaster of the year was the one occurring at the Baltimore Tunnel No. 2, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., resulting from the explosion or burning of a number of kegs of powder, by which 92 lives were lost. This disaster emphasizes the need for stricter regulations relating to hauling men and explosives into the mine at the same time. The question of whether electricity was responsible or not does not affect the consideration of the various dangers which arise in underground transportation and handling of explosiveB. At best the handling and hauling of explo.sives is hazardous and such being the case, no one, other than the necessary attendants, should be permitted to ride in cars or cages transporting explosives. As a result of this disaster, the report b of the coroner's jury to the governor of Pennsylvania brings out some important dangers to be avoided in the use and transportation of explosives.

FRONTIERS of geological knowledge retreated further this past year before an ever-widening geophysical attack, as governments and endowed institutions continued to take an increasing practical interest in the geophysical line of approach to the study of earth phenomena. A year ago I opened this annual review with a brief account of the efforts to discover what formations lie concealed beneath the deep sediments which form the superficial portions of the Continental Shelf off the eastern United States. That work was but the beginning, and 1938 saw its continuation and expansion. With the assistance of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Maurice Ewing pushed his researches in the development of instruments and techniques for deep-sea seismic refraction studies. Ewing's early refraction profile from the Virginia Capes to the edge of the Continental Shelf has been followed by a similar traverse in Great Britain from the coast of Cornwall to the edge of the Continental Shelf southwest of England. This showed that the thickness of the sedimentary mantle and the rates of slope of the basement surfaces there are comparable to those in the Virginia Cape district.
