"It is important to ensure that the basic mine hoist plant design fundamentals are incorporated into any new mine hoist plant project before detailed design engineering is commenced. Some of the basic design fundamentals to be considered are: hoist rope fleet and flight angles for good hoist rope coiling, hoist rope harmonic frequency study to ensure that the hoist rope does not run at full speed at a rope resonance frequency, head frame and shaft clearance diagrams to establish the optimum positions for the loading and dumping of the shaft conveyances, access in the head frame and shaft collar for hoist rope and shaft conveyance installation and removal. Failure to consider the hoist plant fundamentals before detailed engineering commences will result in extra costs for hoist plant redesign or a significant increase in operating and maintenance costs for the mine due to increased hoist plant downtime to perform tasks and a lower mine operating efficiency. INTRODUCTION The mine hoisting plant is the most critical single line component in the operation of a shaft sinking operation or a permanent installation. Bad decisions in the design and selection of the hoist plant equipment can significantly add to the operating costs and up-time in the operation of the mine. Mine hoisting plant equipment installed costs represent approximately 5 to 8 percent of the capital cost of a new mine, yet price sometimes becomes the deciding factor for procuring the hoist plant components, sometimes selecting used equipment that may compromise the design and maintainability of the mine hoist plant. Mine downtime can cost upwards of $100,000 per hour and it will not take a very long time to eat up all the so-called savings on hoist plant equipment purchases. This paper will provide guidelines for the design, selection, installation and maintenance of mine hoist plant equipment with the objective to having the right mine hoist plant with the highest operational availability and best maintainability. PRELIMINARY DESIGN INFORMATION Before any engineering commences, the following information needs to be obtained to allow the preliminary sizing of the hoist plant equipment: • Shaft depth: The shaft depth will influence the hoist rope selection based on the material and personnel loads anticipated for the mine design. The shaft depth will also influence the maximum speed of the shaft conveyances. • Annual production: The desired annual production will influence the required payload sizing with allowances for maintenance and inspections of the hoist plant equipment."

Introduction Continuous monitoring techniques have been used in the US and abroad for many years. A continuous miner has a monitor that measures methane and automatically gives a warning if the methane exceeds 1%. It deenergizes the continuous mining machine automatically at a maximum concentration of 2%. Main fans are also continually monitored to ensure operation. Alarms may also be given at a remote location should a fan slow or stop. The systems being developed can continuously monitor various gases and equipment throughout the mine and transmit pertinent data to a surface monitoring station. At this station, conditions throughout the mine can be monitored and, in some instances, controlled. These are known as Mine Wide Monitoring Systems (MWMS). History The use of environmental monitoring systems began in 1976 when a federal court approved the petition of modification to use belt air at the face. The first mine to receive a modification did install a system to supplement existing safeguards. Later, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted tests dealing with the use of belt air. Findings from these tests are being used to set guidelines as requirements of a petition. These requirements include: • Velocity of air has to be 0.25 to 1.5 m/sec (50 to 300 fpm); • Monitors will be installed at each belt drive and tailpiece and at intervals not to exceed 610 m (2000 ft); and • An alarm level of 10 ppm, above the ambient level is appropriate. The early uses of environmental monitoring could only be used outby the last open crosscut. That may be a reason for an initial slow growth of these systems. In June 1982, MSHA began evaluating systems that could be used in returns to ensure that monitoring systems being used in areas where permissible equipment is required does not of itself pose an explosion hazard. This is known as the Mine Wide Monitoring Systems Evaluations and Sensor Classification program. The evaluations and classifications granted are based on electric currents and voltages. Use of mine wide monitoring systems The environmental aspect of MWMS in today's coal industry deals with carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and air velocity. Just as all mines are different and encounter different problems, the MWMS are diverse and can be used to provide necessary data in all areas of coal mines. Mine operators in an ultragassy seam, for example, may be concerned with monitoring methane, while a mine that used diesel equipment may want to continuously monitor for diesel contaminants. In a mine with roof fall problems, airflow monitors may be helpful as an indication of whether the air is flowing in its normal course and at its normal volume. Today's MWMS can monitor any or all of these parameters. Most systems can be expanded as mining needs require. For example, a mine is now being monitored for methane and five years from now CO monitoring would help increase safety. It may be possible to use the same system by adding additional equipment. In the US, 30 environmental monitoring systems were installed from May 1985 through May 1986. In 1984 and 1985, there were 38 and 44 environmental monitoring systems in operation, respectively. Due to mine closings, 11 of these are no longer in use. However, the number of mines using environmental monitoring systems increased to 63. Microscopic examination of selected, representative, unweathered samples of Birmingham, Alabama, Silurian, sedimentary iron ores has fully revealed the nature of the phosphorous-bearing mineral grains. The grains are composed of carbonate-fluorapatite (collophane), range in size from 1 um to 2.25 mm, and exhibit varied types of intergrowth with hematite. Modal analyses conducted under cathodolumi-nescence have provided quantitative data on the a3undance of each of 15 types of phosphorous-bearing mineral grains and made it possible to assess the potential phosphorous liberation from four types of iron ore. The results indicate that 27% of the total phosphorous contained in the iron ores in the western part of the Birmingham district can be expected to be liberated by fine grinding; 60% for ores in the eastern part of the district.

The presence of natural underground cavities is normally a characteristic of iron ore deposits, specifically in tropical deposits. Brazil and the United States are the only countries that have a legislation to protect these structures, but in Brazil this legislation is very specific for the existing cavities in the federal territory. These cavities are classified by their level of relevance as high, medium, and low. From this perspective, its preservation becomes mandatory, especially, for those of high relevance in order to protect the species (flora and fauna) that live in them. When these structures are within the production phases, it becomes a challenge to exploit these reserves with the use of commercial explosives, since these structures condition and may restrict the use and amount of explosive charge. This paper presents the methodology of controlled blasting associated with predictability via realistic simulation in production polygons, applied in a Brazilian iron ore mine where there is a presence of high relevance natural cavities with restrictions in relation to the limits of Peak Particle Velocity (PPV), which is product of detonation.

"Ventilation is a vital service in underground mines, required to provide fresh air to the work force and dilute diesel equipment gases (CO, NOx) and diesel particulate matters (DPM). At a Mexican precious metal mine in the state of Chihuahua there is a VOD system implemented using Howden’s control and monitoring system and a state of the art tagging and tracking technology. The JM zone of the mine is ventilated using a push and pull system, using automated regulators on each level to control the air going in and out of the levels. The implementation of advanced control strategies using Howden’s VentSim™CONTROL allows the mine to generate significant savings and increase health and safety of the workers.INTRODUCTIONIn underground mines, ventilation is a requirement in order to maintain the fresh air needed for personnel and equipment. Ventilation regulations dictate the amount of air required underground to carry out day to day operations by limiting the exposure that workers have to toxic gases and other pollutants. Regulations for required airflow in underground operations for diesel pollutants are generally provided on vehicle rated brake horsepower, in Mexico the requirement is 75 cfm/bhp. In underground mines, ventilation services can account to up to 75% of the mine’s energy consumption, and it is very common for fans to operate all the time because of a lack of control infrastructure for the ventilation system. By the implementation of a Ventilation On Demand (VOD) system a mine can reduce this consumption with different control strategies. The main infrastructure required to implement this system consists of remote control of ventilation infrastructure (fans and regulators), a communication network between throughout the mine with the surface and a tracking system for personnel and diesel equipment. Software is required to determine fresh air requirements based on the tracking system data and then send the control commands to the different ventilation infrastructure. In 2015, San Julian Mine acquired Howden’s VentSim™CONTROL (formally SmartEXEC) and the hardware solution to deploy a VOD system at their operation. The VOD system and Fresnillo plc’s San Julian Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, consists of control of 10 surface exhaust fans, 2 surface intake fans, and 12 underground automated regulators. It also includes the monitoring of 46 flow sensors, 28 CO sensors, 28 NO?? sensors and 42 temperature and humidity sensors, approximately 500 personnel tags, approximately 220 vehicle tracking tags with diesel status (ON or OFF) and approximately 250 tracking zones. This paper discusses the control strategies that have been implemented at San Julian Mine since the system was commissioned and the next steps that will be taken at the mine with the system as they test different level on VOD."

On reconnaît néanmoins qu?il y a des cas particuliers comme le Botswana, la Namibie, l?Afrique du Sud. Face à cette situation, beaucoup de scénarii ont été proposés sans pour autant porté les fruits espérés. Le rapport Brundtland suggère que le développement durable est la clé du succès car elle veille à la prospérité économique, à l?équité dans la société et à la pérennité dans l?environnement. Pour l?Afrique, beaucoup de facteurs doivent être considérés et les solutions se doivent d?être pratiques et éthiques. Le futur ingénieur des mines qui a écrit ce rapport, apporte sa vision de la situation non sans avoir auparavant analysé les faits. Cette démarche, qui se veut avant tout éthique, inclut les aspects sociaux, économiques et politiques. Introduction In the 40s, 50s and the 60s, many economists, among which Harold Hotelling from South Carolina University, thought that developing countries could reach socio-economical success by extracting their natural resources such as oil and minerals. The current economical disaster seems to have contradicted that belief and critics like Davis Graham (Colorado School of Mines) and Michael Ross (University of California at Los Angeles) even suggested that extractive activities stop in Africa. But the experts of the World Bank (Mining Department) and some mining and oil companies are committed to reverse the tendency by implementing a new approach. Considering the principles of sustainable development defined in the Brundtland report (1987), we decided to analyze the possibility of giving the extractive industry a catalytic role in creating a socially, economically and environmentally development in Africa. In other words, can we continue to mine and extract oil in Africa for its blossoming future under the ruling of the sustainable development? In the following, we start by explaining the African socio-economic and political context. After a brief definition of the sustainable development, we explain why, for Africa, some believe in the extractive industry and some don?t. In the end, we draw out conciliatory arguments.

THE INVESTIGATION of barrier pillars in the Southern field is part of the comprehensive study of the mine water problem in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18).4 Tim Southern field is in Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties, in eastern Pennsylvania; has an area of 200 square miles; is 70 miles long from Mauch Chunk on the east to the Susquehanna River on the west; and is 1 to 6 miles wide. In the Southern field are 37 underground water pools containing 37312 billion gallons of water (5). Most of these pools overflow to the surface because the barrier pillars controlling them are effective under existent, conditions. Abandonment of mines in the Southern field has resulted in the hooding of 34 percent of the field. The largest tonnage of reserves of anthracite lies in this field, where mining conditions are most difficult. Large reserves of anthra¬cite underlie the abandoned mine workings, and before a great part of these reserves can be developed and extracted, the abandoned workings must be unwatered and kept drained (5).

Introduction This paper attempts to describe the characteristics of the industrial minerals segment of the minerals industry that make it different from the other segments. Also described are the trends, strengths, and shortcomings in the industrial minerals segment. This may help professionals in the minerals industry determine if there is a place for them in industrial minerals. Industry Overview It is difficult to generalize when describing the industrial minerals industry. Some products, such as cement and potash, are produced exclusively by large, well capitalized and technically sophisticated companies. Others, such as sand and gravel, are generally produced by small, family-owned companies operating on a shoestring budget. Still other products, such as feldspar, are produced by both types of companies. Not only are the companies vastly different, the products and marketing of their products are also different. Industrial mineral products are sold based on their physical characteristics (abrasives), or their chemical characteristics (trona), or both (glass sand). Marketing can be direct by the producing plant, a corporate office handling products form several plants, or through distributors. The geologic, mining, and processing skills needed can be minimal or sophisticated. There can even be large differences in the technical skills needed in two plants producing the same product. One feldspar producer may only need to mine and grind his ore, while another may use a delicate flotation process. One easy generalization is that there are industrial mineral operations in all geographic locations. A second is that industrial minerals offers more opportunities to entrepreneurs than the metals field because of the variety in the sizes and types of operations. Industry Growth Industrial minerals must be considered a mature industry. Consequently, little exciting growth can be expected. Over the past 30 years, industry sales have grown at a rate of 6.2%, compared to a 6.7% growth rate of the GNP (Kliff, 1978). A 3.8% growth rate has been forecast for the remainder of this century. The fortunes of those plants producing a product for local consumption will depend on the prosperity of the local economy. The fortunes of those plants that sell into the national market will depend on their competitiveness in their industry. Major industrial mineral products are shown in Table 1. The first three commodities account for 66% of the industrial minerals market. Typically, deposits of stone, sand and gravel, and the limestone, silica, and clay needed for cement are easy to find and mine. Role of Mining Engineers and Geologists Because a sophisticated techcical knowledge of geology or mining is not required, very few geologists and mining engineers are employed in industrial minerals. Geologists working for these companies function less as geologists than managers and executives dealing with permitting and land acquisition. Likewise, mining is done mostly by open-pit methods. It is generally supervised by an individual experienced in the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, not a mining engineer trained in rock mechanics or computer methods of mine planning. What of the geologists and mining engineers employed by the industrial minerals industry? Many gained their positions as a result of their experience dealing with the regulatory agencies that control the operations of all mines and mills. Their technical expertise in geology or mining becomes only a side benefit. This paper discusses equipment replacement strategies and specifically addresses the upgrading of technologically superseded equipment. The process of equipment replacement evaluations is reviewed, and areas have been highlighted where currently accepted practice results in a bias towards retaining existing equipment longer than otherwise justified. The Discounted Average Cost Method is described and the advantages of the technique for this style of decision making discussed. Several key issues influencing the replacement evaluation are also presented together with examples from recent consulting work.

Natural resources are the reservoir from which society draws its material sustenance. Although there is a growing awareness of the need for aesthetic resources such as space for recreation and natural beauty, the basic resources are soil, air, water, and minerals including fuel. Minera's and all sources of energy gain in relative importance with advancing technology and expanding industrilization. In the highly industrialized economy of the United States, almost every aspect of man's life is touched in some way by a product of, the mineral; industries. Agriculture owes much of its productivity to mineral-based fertilizers, insecticides, and mechanical equipment. Modern construction, manufacturing, communications, and transportation are all dependent on nonmetallic minerals, metals, and fuels. Throughout history, those nations with access to minerals, and the technology for using them, have gained ascendency. Before World War II the leading powers also were, leading coal producers. In order of declining rank the five leading' coal producers were the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the USSR, and Japan. That the military victory went to the side with the greater' capacity to convert iron and coal into tools of industry, and weapons, is' more than coincidence. It is a fundamental' fact of existence. It is axiomatic that the United States must have a continually increasing supply of minerals if we are to meet the needs of our burgeoning population for a comfortable standard of living and for national security.

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels'. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

The 50,000-ton-per-day Concentrator and Crushing Plant, complete with its related water supply, tailings disposal and concentrate handling systems, was started up in a five-month period, with the entire plant obtaining its design capacity six months after the first mill became operational. Individual mill lines, with their spiral circuits, achieved design capacities within a week after the first treatment of ore through each mill. Construction and start-up proceeded together in many areas of the plant, and considerable organization and cooperation between the Owner, the Engineer and the Contractors permitted a smooth transition from construction to operation. PLANT DESCRIPTION THE Carol Lake Plant of the Iron Ore Company of Canada l1as been well described in various technical magazines. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief outline of the start-up of the con-centration complex. This start-up was accomplished in a period of five months, with the plant producing one million tons of concentrate and achieving its design-rated tonnage less than six months after the first ore was treated.

This publication presents statistical data on oven-and beehive-coke plants in the United States. Information on the carbonizing capacity of the coke industry is important because of the close relationship between the coke industry and most of the other basic industries of our country. Coke is an essential-raw material in pig-iron production; also, coal-chemical materials are used to make fertilizers, paints, plastics, synthetic rubber, explosives, detergents, nylon, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and many other useful products necessary to sustain and improve the high standards of living in our country. Oven-coke plants in the United States on December 31, 1958, are tabulated in table 1. This tabular presentation shows the location, classification, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, coal chemicals produced, and name and address of parent company for each individual coke plant. About 86 percent of the capacity of slot-type coke ovens in the United States is owned by iron and steel companies. In most of these plants the coke ovens are integrated with the blast furnaces to facilitate transportation of raw materials for steel making. This has resulted in large coke plants, and the average annual coke capacity of "furnace" plants in 1958 was 1.3 million tons. Nonfurnace or "merchant" plants include coke plants associated with chemical operations, gas utilities, as well as coke plants that produce metallurgical, industrial) and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials for sale on the open market. These plants ordinarily are not as large as furnace plant~ and annual coke capacity of merchant plants in 1958 averaged only 500 thousand tons. At the end of 1958 there were 55 furnace plants and 22 merchant plants.

WORLD production of silver in 1929 totaled 256 million ounces. In 1928 production was 258 million ounces, and in 1927, 254 million ounces. With an actual decrease in the amount of silver produced last year, as compared with 1928, and an increase over 1927 of less than one per cent, obviously there has been no overproduction of the metal in the popular sense. But the price of silver tells a different story. For 1927, the average quotation was 56.37 cents; it was 58.17 in 1928, and 53.0 in 1929. During the last year it reached a high point of 57 cents in January, and fell steadily, without interruption to the downward trend, to a low of 47 cents in December. Since then it has dropped to an all time low of 43 cents on February 6.

Cost management in the conditions of increasing competition and unforeseen market turbulence constitutes one of the key areas of the enterprise?s activity. In the last two years the demand for hard coal on the domestic and global market of non-renewable resources has increased significantly. Polish hard coal mining industry, as an industry in the stage of decline, received a chance for rejuvenation. However, one of the most significant conditions of seizing this opportunity is the rationalization of mining costs and improvement of production effectiveness. Due to the significance of this issue, the main objective of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the production effectiveness in the hard coal mining industry. In order to meet such an objective, in the first part of the paper we measured effectiveness in the Polish hard coal mines in years 2006- 2011. The research encompassed three out of five mining enterprises operating in the country. Then based on the received results, guidelines concerning the improvement of effectiveness of production were created, taking into consideration infrastructural, technical, economic and organizational determinants. Furthermore, opportunities and threats for improving the production effectiveness, stemming from the external conditions have also been indicated.

The endlessly changing pattern of mineral supply and demand offers opportunity to the alert and can bring disaster to the unwary. The discovery of ore bodies, the invention of extractive processes, the provision of new transport facilities, the political stabilization of underdeveloped areas, and many other changes can increase supply dramatically. Such new outpourings of mineral wealth from ore bodies bring fortunes to their developers, and consumers frequently find their competitive positions decidedly improved by new and cheap sources of supply. On the other hand, operators of marginal properties can find competition from newly opened high-grade mines intolerable. Consumers that have depended on the products of nearby, high-cost mines may find new, remote, low-cost supplies advantageous only to their competitors. The invention of new prospecting methods can have spectacular effects. Shortly after World War I the discovery rate of petroleum pools began to decline. The leading prospecting technique of that day, the projection downward of surface reflections of geologic structure, was proving less rewarding. Prophets foretold an oil shortage in the near future. But at that very moment scientists were perfecting the application of seismic waves to reveal underground oil-bearing geologic structures. As these geophysical methods were put into commercial use the whole outlook changed-the problem of the 1930's became how to cope with the surplus from discovery, not how to meet the ever rising demand. Many lead mines were being abandoned as unprofitable about this same time because the penalties charged by smelters for the zinc in the ores and concentrates more than counterbalanced the payments for lead and silver. "Gold has been found in many parts of the Bridge River district of British Columbia; but it is from a relatively small area in the valley of Cadwallader creek that most production has come. The ore-bearing area measures 1/2 mile in width by 3 miles in length; and for convenience it is called the Cadwallader gold belt in this paper. In this belt are found the Bralorne and Pioneer mines and in addition several prospects under development.The gold of the Cadwallader gold belt occurs in quartz veins averaging about 3 feet in width and containing about ½ oz. of gold a ton. Except for a relatively small amount of silver, no other metals are produced from these veins. The ore-bearing veins occur in a variety of rocks. They occupy reverse faults and tension fractures belonging to a distinctive fracture system. Some of these structures are ore-bearing over lengths exceeding 5,000 feet and depths exceeding 3,700 feet. The production of the Bralorne mine (1932-1945) is 996,383 oz. gold and 190,709 oz. silver; that of the Pioneer mine (1930-1945) is 777,588 oz. gold and 135,698 oz. silver. These two mines have together distributed about $25,000,000 in dividends.The Bridge River district first attracted attention in 1863* when prospectors were attracted by its small but rich placer gold deposits. Most of the important lode deposits of the Cadwallader gold belt were discovered in 1897 (11). Many years of desultory development followed and it was not until 1928 and 1932 that the Pioneer and Bralorne mines, respectivdy, entered into profitable production."

The use of extended workdays (regular shift lengths of 10 or 12 h (hour), while still maintaining a 4O-h workweek) in mining operations is attracting growing interest in the United States. There is very little doubt that extended workdays is a very popular alternative among the work force because of the significant increase in days off, including weekends, especially when compared with traditional rotation schedules of working seven straight shifts or having only one weekend off every 4 to 6 weeks. However, there are some serious concerns by management, workers, unions, and various governmental policymakers that working 10-or 12-h days may create an added risk of accidents and health problems. The U.S. Bureau of Mines reviewed the literature studies related to the safety and performance issues of extended workdays. This report presents a summary of those findings. The studies examined in this review are divided into three sections: (1) laboratory, (2) field, and (3) accident and injury analysis. In general, results are inconclusive. Studies have shown both positive and negative effects. It is concluded, therefore, that in industries such as mining where accidents are a serious concern, special measures and evaluation in the use of extended workdays be considered.

The atmosphere in part of an air-sealed coal mine was monitored continuously through a drill hole for oxygen content to determine the effectiveness of sealing a mine against the entrance of air and the major force that caused the phenomenon of mine breathing through the overburden. The differential pressure across the seal and the barometric pressure on the outside also were recorded. A general correlation, obtained between the oxygen level, differential pressure, and barometric pressure, indicates that changes in air pressure are the cause for periodic replenishment of the oxygen in the mine. Mine effluent quality was determined by conditions in many sections of the mine and could not be related to the oxygen level at the drill hole.

When I began my career (the first assignment was mucking the "drainage" ditch) an experienced miner told me, "Remember son, happiness is a journey, not a destination. . . ." If you missed the 100th Anniversary of AIME in New York this year, you are missing the journey. There are not enough superlatives to describe the event. Especially since New York is "known to have it all." An Indefinable Plus There was a little something different at this meeting. I cannot explain what, but there seemed to be more of everything. There were more wives there this year-what a pleasure to see all the lovely women mingling through the conference- which was reflected through our own attire and mannerisms. In fact, everyone looked so great, we checked to see if it really was a convention of miners. You wives keep coming to all of the events, because so much is added by your presence.
