"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). IT has been said the British Empire was built on British Coal. In all the postwar planning for Great Britain the necessity for producing cheap coal and the prosperity of the coal industry are given first consideration. On Jan. 23, 1945, there was released in London a "Report to the Colliery Owners" which had been awaited with great interest. This was entitled "A Plan for Coal" and was the recommendation of Robert Foot, chairman of The Mining Association (Colliery Owners), prepared at their request. Presentation of the "Plan" at this time is particularly significant as it is an answer to the demand for nationalization of the coal industry by the Labour Party and at the same time is a carefully considered program for postwar reconstruction, prosperity, and stability. In the words of Mr. Foot, If the coal industry for the first ten years after this war is to find itself in a situation similar to the one it occupied for the ten years following the last war, with its record of disputes, strikes, stoppages, short-time working, unemployment, and, with it all, a completely insufficient margin of profit, and all the insecurity and instability in our basic industry that was brought with them, it is goodbye to any real prospect of full employment, social security, and high standard of living. The recent developments in refractory precious metal ore processing (Bio-oxidation, Autoclaving), and the revitalization of the more traditional roasting processes have attracted great attention in recent years and are indeed the focus of todays symposium. It must always be remembered, however, that the term refractory ore by definition means that the material 'must be capable of being treated at a profit". Given the high cost of the refractory processes, the requirement to be treated at a profit requires very close scrutiny during the evaluation phase of the property development. The M.G.M. film company has the latin motto Ars Gratia Artis meaning Art for Arts Sake. Ingeniatore Gratia Ingeniatoris (a very crude attempt at saying Engineering for Engineerings Sake) should not be the motto for mining companies intent on exploiting refractory gold deposits, but rather the wittily tilted heading for this paper "Take the money and run like a thief". The following hypothetical case studies show that the high technology solution is not always the best financial solution.

A numerical study done to test the efficacy of heuristics developed for the design of measurement networks for high precision metallurgical accounting is presented in this paper. The heuristics considered were designed to maximise variance reduction of terminal stream measurements through data reconciliation for observable linear flow systems. A complex metallurgical process flow sheet from the mineral sands industry was used as a case study. Monte Carlo type simulations coupled with a non-linear programming based steady state data reconciliation algorithm were used as tools to investigate the heuristics. The results obtained suggested a close correlation between magnitudes of measured variances and the respective levels of variance reduction obtained through data reconciliation for both internal and terminal streams. It was observed that variance reduction through data reconciliation was maximised for terminal stream measurements in networks characterised by high precision measurement of internal streams and/or in flow sheets characterised by high ?stream to node ratios?. Terminal streams attached to highly interconnected parent nodes were observed to experience higher reductions in variance compared to terminal streams attached to less interconnected parent nodes. The results generally highlight the additional benefits of highly interconnected flow sheets and high precision internal stream measurement regimes on the maximisation of variance reduction of terminal stream measurements through data reconciliation. These findings are significant to metallurgical accounting and to process accounting applications in general in that they provide a conceptual basis for design decision making regarding the construction of measurement networks aimed at maximising variance reduction of targeted streams through data reconciliation.

The idea of using only one strand for both sintering and cooling of the sinter is not new. In 1952, in the U.S.A. a sintering plant was built at Benson Mine (Star Lake, N.Y.), including : - 68 m2 or 735 sqft (8 wind boxes) for sintering, - 22 m2 or 237 sqft (3 wind boxes) for cooling. In the USSR, a large number of machines have been built allowing for cooling of the sinter on the strand, especially the 4 m (about 13 ft) machines, with : 252 m2 sintering grate area 60 m2 cooling grate area 312 m2 total grate area. However, such ventures did not prove very successful, and the IRSID embarked many years ago on a research program to discover : - what are the problems associated with cooling on a sintering strand ; - what are the possible solutions for industrial plants.

O processo de dissolução da alumina em condições industriais em cubas de Tecnologia VSS Soderberg de alimentações laterais em batelada é bastante complexo, pois sofre interferência de muitas variáveis de processo como: temperatura e química de banho, propriedades físico-químicas da alumina, quantidade de alumina adicionada e massa de banho disponível. Um bom controle de adição e variáveis de processo contribuirão para garantia de uma melhor eficiência de corrente, consumo de energia e redução da quantidade lama (alumina não dissolvida) formada que se deposita no fundo das cubas e irá comprometer a passagem da corrente elétrica e consequentemente reduzirá a eficiência dos fornos. Este estudo mostra as principais variáveis que influenciam no processo de dissolução, o comportamento da concentração da alumina e temperatura do banho durante os intervalos de alimentação de 2:40 e 4:00 horas, a temperatura de entrada da alumina e as condições de cavidade devido a deposição de lama no fundo das cubas.

The past decade shows record increases in global demand for minerals and metals with an accompanying significant decline in skilled personnel. Mining companies today are examining new technologies to maximize production, reduce costs, and create safer work conditions to deal with this shortfall. Automation of an open-pit mine haulage system is receiving attention as a beneficial option since it provides more consistent and efficient operation of mining equipment, it removes workers from potential danger, it reduces fuel consumption significantly reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and it can help optimize vehicle repairs and equipment replacement because of more-predictable and better-controlled maintenance. This paper describes a simulation model under development using the EXTENDSIM software package to examine scale-up issues and constraints of autonomous vehicles in comparison to a manual system. The software can predict and manage Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), such as productivity, safety, cost, equipment failures, fuel consumption, and tire wear under different road and load conditions. By breaking-down the various systems of an autonomous haulage truck and simulating the overall haulage system using a Monte Carlo approach, the model becomes a flexible and powerful tool to use within a mining organization. Direct comparison to a manuallyrun system can be done to show the cost and operational benefits of automation. Project managers can use this tool to guide decision-making about possible application of autonomous haulage trucks at a specific mine site.

"Replacing the aging roadway access to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, thereby ensuring traffic safety and robustness in case of seismic occurrences, provided an opportunity for major design improvements as well as the development of a parkway that would include the construction of four new tunnels. With an eye to the future, the Doyle Drive replacement project aimed to meet the highest standards for environmental stewardship beyond regulatory requirements. Understanding that lighting equipment is the tunnel‘s subsystem that uses the most energy, the operator was looking for a sustainable solution to light the tunnels. An Intelligent Lighting Control System (ILCS), designed specifically for road tunnels, was acquired to individually control the almost 2000 luminaires lighting the four tunnels. This paper will show the results in terms of energy and operational savings generated over the nine months of operation between the commissioning and the conference in April 2016. INTRODUCTION Electrical & mechanical (E&M) equipment represents an average of 10 % of a tunnel total construction cost. Once the civil infrastructure completed, E&M equipment drives the main part of the expense during a tunnel useful life. Table 1 below describes the impact of various types of energy consumption and their cost impact in tunnels of less than 500 m. It is clear that lighting is the sub-system that requires the most energy. A good lighting strategy is the key to reducing energy consumption due to lighting and a viable solution that will bring important savings in tunnel operations.With a price of $0.14/kWh in California and a planned increase between 3% and 6% per year during the period 2013-2040, the tunnel operators could not afford to overlit the tunnels—particularly when they have to operate it for the next 30 years. However, they also need to maintain the right lighting level to ensure driver safety all the time. The Presidio Parkway project includes the Battery tunnels, which are 240 m (790 feet) and 230 m (750 feet) in length, and the Main Post tunnels, which are 280 m (920 feet) and 315 m (1030 feet) in length."

The South Deep surface shaft system is being sunk to a final depth of 2750 in below surface and on completion will be the deepest single drop haft in the world. The shafts will intersect the target reef horizon at 2650 to below surface. In order to negate the requirement for a shaft pillar, which would he extremely large at this depth, the reef horizon in the vicinity of the intersection is currently being mined. A high quality crushed waste/classified tailings backfill is being placed in the longwall stoping panels around the shaft intersection area. This kill limit closure and ride which following shaft reef intersection could have a detrimental effect on the long term shaft stability. This paper discusses underground instrumentation results and numerical modelling exercises carried out to confirm that the shaft system will he stable throughout the life of the mine. Instrumentation projects include closure and ride measured between backfill paddocks and haulage leveling exercises carried out to determine the far field rockmass response to mining with stiff backfill.

The self-heating of sulphides can be a major hazard in mining operations and concentrate handling, particularly during transportation and associated storage. Self-heating results from the oxidation of sulphide minerals and can vary from being insignificant to potentially hazardous to life and infrastructure. It is essential that there be a reliable test methodology that can categorize a given sulphide material as to its self-heating potential. By their nature, sulphide ores and concentrates are complex and variable mineral combinations making it difficult to predict their self-heating behavior a-priori based on mineralogy or with a simple "snapshot" test. Furthermore, self-heating behavior will depend on the state of oxidation of the sulphides as well as time, temperature and humidity. A review of available testing apparatuses and protocols that can be used to assess self-heating potential is presented. Each of these methodologies was examined in relation to its ability to predict the latent self-heating hazard of a sulphide material. Several of the methods were compared to illustrate their strengths and weakness. The results indicated that a number of the test protocols may produce false negative indications of self-heating potential, constituting an obvious concern to the industry.

Natural Zeolites are a less expensive and in certain applications a superior alternative to organic ion exchange resins. Mining and metallurgical waste streams are difficult to treat because the effluents which contain potentially valuable heavy metals such as copper, lead, and silver are often highly acidic and contain significant quantities of suspended solids. Under rigorous operational conditions, certain natural zeolites can remove the metals, which if desired can be recovered by either elution or conventional smelting techniques. There are significant differences in cation exchange rate, selectivity and capacity as well as resistance to either high or low pH, blocking cations and tolerance to elevated or depressed temperature and pressure not only between different zeolite minerals but between the same mineral from different deposits. Applying natural zeolites to the treatment of mining and metallurgical waste streams depends on matching the specific zeolite to the effluent by characterization of the zeolite minerals.

TWO summers ago I had the privilege of visiting No. 18 colliery at Glace Bay. Underground, we travelled along the haulage-way behind a powerful electric locomotive. The motor in this locomotive began to smoke badly and a carbon tetrachloride type of extinguisher was used several times during the trip. At the time, I noted a strong odour of phosgene. On my return to Sydney, I spoke to Mr. Harold Gordon, Assistant to the General Manager of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, and warned him of the danger of using this type of fire extinguisher in confined spaces, since it is a well known chemical fact that phosgene, a dangerously toxic gas, is formed by the decomposition of carbon tetrachloride. This danger does not seem to be widely recognized, so it seems advisable that a more general warning be published. Attention was first drawn to the danger by the death of two men in the United States Navy Department subsequent to breathing fumes from carbon tetrachloride used in a fire, and when an employee of the Bureau of Mines also was overcome while fighting a fire with carbon tetrachloride liquid. These accidents led to an investigation of the decomposition products of carbon tetrachloride by a group of workers in the Research Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experimental Station, U.S. Bureau of Mines, the results of which were published in the October, 1920, number of the Journal of the .Franklin Institute (1). Their experiments were conducted by two methods. The first consisted in applying the liquids to actual fires and -to hot metal in a closed room of 1,000 feet capacity, where the gaseous products, mixed with air, could be retained and analyzed. The second method was to pass the vapour:s in air through heated tubes of iron or quartz, where the humidity of the air and the temperature could be controlled.

INTRODUCTION The history of coal mining the Ostrava Region of the Czech Republic goes back nearly 250 years. Both coking coal for steelmaking and thermal coal for the production of energy are mined here; however, it was the coking capabilities that subsequently turned the region into a major steel-producing area in the early 1800?s, something that continues to this day. Ostrava lies in the northeast corner of the Czech Republic, near the southern border of Poland, and falls within the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. The region contains over 400 seams of coal of which about 150 have been mined over its history and continue to be mined. Eighty percent of the Upper Silesian coalfieldlies in Poland and is presently mined by about 35 coal mines; the remaining 20% falls in the Czech Republic, which presently has four mines operated by OKD, a.s., a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based New World Resources. Traditionally, all the mines in this region have employed the longwall method of mining, of which subsidence is an unavoidable consequence. In fact, due to the long history of longwall mining here, there are areas where the overall subsidence has exceeded 37 meters (121 feet). The region is fairly densely populated with residences and industry, and a considerable amount of coal lies under some of these areas where subsidence is not allowed or has to be minimized. It is this reason that has driven OKD to consider alternate methods of mining that will not create subsidence. The decision was made to consider the room and pillar method of mining in order to leave stable pillars of coal to support the surface. After considering several locations, OKD chose the shaft safety pillar at the CSM mine as a test mining location. To say the least, this is a very challenging location in which to conduct a test. As with the entire region, there are many faults from tectonic activity, the seams are pitching at 12 to 20 degrees, the area is affected by high horizontal stress, and the depth of 750 to 900 meters is perhaps the deepest room and pillar coal mining ever attempted.

Among the thirty-five declared critical raw materials (CRM) in the United States, there is no sustainable domestic production for the fourteen of them, while for some others domestic supply does not meet the national demand. Numerous potential critical raw material projects are in advanced exploration stages. However, the price uncertainties for many of these commodities put feasible future production into question and come into contrast with overly optimistic price forecasts published in all feasibility studies related to such exploration projects. Thus, in this work, a newly developed smart computational tool is used to evaluate the real perspectives of several CRM exploration projects implementing actual commodity prices, and to conduct reverse calculations in order to find the prices at which each project can be viable.

This paper illustrates the application of geostatistics to a roll front type uranium deposit located in Wyoming. The steps involved in calculation of experimental variograms, variogram modeling and verification of the resulting models are described in detail. The resulting spherical variogram models for grade thickness and thickness show strong geometrical anisotropies. The major axis of anisotropy for both variables is approximately parallel to the axis of the roll front and the minor axis perpendicular to the roll. This model confirms the technique of drilling "fences" across the roll front, where the drilling is much closer together than the fences along the roll.

This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. I consider it an honour to be the opening speaker in this afternoon's session on "Canadian Exploration". I also think it most appropriate that this joint meeting of the MMIJ and AIME should consider this subject, because Canada is a major exporter of mineral products and Japan and the United States are our two largest customers. Clearly, therefore, both countries have a valid interest in developments on the Canadian minerals scene. I represent the Mineral Development Sector of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I will therefore speak from the point of view of the Federal Government. At this point I would like to acknowledge the help and constructive criticism I have received from several of my colleagues in Mineral Development Sector in the preparation of this paper. In any discussion of exploration in Canada, it is essential to emphasize at the outset that Canada has a federal system of government, with powers shared between Ottawa and the provinces. Under our constitution, the federal government has jurisdiction over the north, and over offshore areas, while the provinces own the natural resources within their boundaries. They control the systems of land acquisition for exploration and the terns under which mining titles are issued, and are therefore able to determine the rate and conditions of exploration and development of these resources. It follows that the Federal Government can influence the exploration and development of the provincial resources only indirectly by consultation with provincial authorities. However, once the resources are developed and begin to flow to market, the Federal Government can exert a much stronger influence because of its constitutional right to control both inter-provincial and international trade, as well as through its general fiscal and tax powers.

An investigation of coal deposits near Cerrillos Santa Fe County, N. Mex., was undertaken 14 the Bureau of Mines in 1943 as part of a general program to determine sources of metallurgical coal for western steel plants. Almost all of the coal used for metallurgical purposes west of the Continental Divide Is mined from the Lower Sunnyside bed in, Carbon County,, Utah. Coke used in western steel plants that is produced from Lower Sunnyside a coal is weaker, structurally, than coke used elsewhere in this country. For this reason, western coal operators and steel manufacturers are anxious to develop new areas of coking coal of better quality then the coal produced from the Sunnyside bed. The objective of investigations of western coals was to (a) develop additional reserves of coking coal to supplement proved reserves in the Sunnyside bed. and (b) develop; if possible, reserves of coal with coking quantities superior to those of Lower Sunnyside

"In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin.
