For many years, much thought and effort have been devoted to the achievement of safety in the use of explosives by those interested in the preservation of human life and the protection of property. As a result, we now have adequate rules pertaining to the safe use of explosives , which, if observed, would prevent many, perhaps ail , of the explosives accidents that yet occur . Although the rules respecting the use of explosives are believed to be well - known, many accidents occur because they are disregarded . The mental awareness aroused by a tragic accident usually will cause safety precautions to be taken for a while ; however , this awareness gradually disappears unless a sincere effort is made permanently to prevent similar accidents . Frequently, because safe methods are more irksome than unsafe methods , the lessons taught by accident experience are forgotten in a short time , vigilance is relaxed , and there is a gradual return to unsafe , easy methods of performing work. If the preservation of human life is important , the unfortunate experiences of others and the lessons taught by them should be applied to reduce unnecessary loss of life . The value of a life lost as the resuit of accident should be calculated not only from the monetary and humanitarian standpoint but also according to what the accident could contribute in the way of saving other lives and suffering . This saving of other lives can and will , if the lessons from unfortunate accidents are applied , convert a loss to a gain a gain of such magnitude that the accident victim could be considered

The engineering profession has traditionally devoted its efforts to understanding and modifying the Earth's environment in order to adapt it to man's needs. In appraising our overall performance, I would have to say it has been a mixed bag. In many areas, notably communications taken in the broadest sense, and development of creature comforts, we have done a good job. In others, we have failed, particularly in our assessment of the effect of our work on the environment. Our failures have been due in part to a lack of understanding or foresight, and in part to a disproportionate emphasis on lowest first cost. Now, with an increasingly large number of people living in a finite environment, there is an urgent need for reassessment. It is no longer possible to pursue a single objective without regard to its side effects. Our projects are too large, and there are too many of them. Environmental impacts must be taken into account in all important engineering decisions of the future. There are forces at work which will help to bring this about. Thinking people everywhere have realized that adverse alteration of our environment eventually affects every one of us. The majority of our citizens, who now live in cities, are beginning to appreciate the advantages of a good natural environment in a way which others who have been closer to the soil have appreciated for years. Our people have flocked to the cities because they wanted to be "where the action is." At the same time, there is a strong desire for what we have come to call the quality of life. In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

Increased employment and a lower accident-frequency rate were the outstanding features of the metal- and nonmetal-mining4 industries of the United States in 1939 compared with 1933, according to reports furnished by individual mining companies to the Bureau of Vines, United States Department of the Interior. Except for 1937, the reports for 1939 showed gains both in number of employees and number of mar -hours worked over all years since 1929. The accident-frequency rate per million man-hours of exposure to mining hazards was lower than in any year since 1925. Reports for 1939 revealed a total of 111,909 men employed in and about mines, an increase of inure than 8 percent over 1931 The total volume of labor performed at all mires was slightly more than 299 million plan-hours, an increase of mare than 10 percent over 1938. As these gains suggest, the average employee had a longer period of work in 1939, the increase amounting to r workdays per employee.

THE Tennessee Copper Company's operations are in the Ducktown Basin, in the extreme southeast corner of Tennessee. The ore is of the heavy sulphide type, the predominating sulphides being pyrite, pyr-rhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The gangue is a micaceous schist, with varying amounts of free quartz. The mining operation develops two classes of ore, each of which is concentrated by the flotation process in separate mills. Table 1 shows a typical analysis of the ore treated in each mill. This was gradually increased to 600 tons by 1926, to 900 tons in 1928, and to 1350 tons in 1938. Fig. 1 shows the crushing and grinding flowsheet in 1928, when the capacity was 900 tons; Fig. 2, the crushing and grinding flowsheet that was developed by 1938, for the treatment of 1350 tons per day. A comparison of these flowsheets reveals that this increase in tonnage, with a subsequent improved operation, was accom-plished with identically the same major equipment. Improving a concentrator's capacity, metallurgical results, and costs as time goes by is a commonplace practice, and is accomplished in various ways, depending upon the local conditions. The reason for presenting the data of how this was accomplished in the mills of the Tennessee Copper Co. is that a fast-running rod mill plays such an interesting role

The major factors limiting the establishing of vegetation on the shale and sandstone wastes at Minto are high exchange acidity and low pH (shale pH 4-5, sandstone pH < 4). In the first revegetation program (1967-74), 3.8 million trees were planted without grading on 4,000 acres (red, jack and scots pine and black locust). White dutch and sweet clover, birds-foot trefoil and red top were established in selected areas, and ponds were stocked with brook trout. In the second phase of reclamation, beginning in 1979, a comprehensive plan will be initiated which will allow for forest production, wildlife development and recreational activities.

Abstract-Brunswick No. 12 is a vent-proximal massive sulfide deposit that formed above a feeder pipe with associated hydrothermal alteration. Because of the replacement of bedded sulfides deposited above the hydrothermal vent, individual sulfide lenses show the following vertical and lateral zoning outward from the vent complex: massive pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite core - interlayered pyrite-sphalerite-galena (Pb-Zn ore zone) - bedded pyrite. The feeder zone which underlies the Cu-rich core consists of an anastomosing network of pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite­ quartz veins with variable and generally minor contents of ferroan carbonate, Fe-rich chlorite, sphalerite, galena and arsenopyrite. Hydrothermal alteration of felsic igneous rocks hosting and adjacent to the feeder pipe is represented by an inner zone (zone 1) characterized by sulfide stringers, Fe-rich chlorite, muscovite, quartz, and ferroan carbonate that formed at the expense of feldspars and what was probably glass; outer zones (Il and III) are represented by Mg-rich chlorite and muscovite formation, and the albitization and silicification of K-feldspar. Accompanying these alteration trends is a marked decrease of Na + Ca, and an increase in Fe + Mg + C03 in zone 1, and increases in Mg + Na in the outer zones. The classic zoning of metals within the sulfide lenses, the formation of a feeder pipe below the vent-proximal sulfide core, and the hydrothermal alteration of felsic volcanic rocks cut by the feeder pipe all support a vent-proximal origin for the Brunswick No. 12 deposit. Furthermore, restriction of sulfide stringer mineralization to the footwall sequence, the folding of the stringer zone by an F1 fold, and the difficulty of long distance mass transfer of metals from the sulfides into the host rocks all argue against a tectonic origin for the stringer zone. All of the evidence indicates that the feeder pipe formed during the ore forming hydrothermal event, but has been distorted and in some areas detached from the overlying massive sulfides during subsequent deformation.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted to gain a basis for recommending methods to predict and prevent the occurrence of cutter roof failure, a common ground control problem in mines of the Northern Appalachian Coal Basin. This was accomplished by determining the geologic and engineering factors responsible for cutter development at six mines affected by cutter roof failure. Three distinct factors were found to be initiators of cutter roof failure: (1) high horizontal roof stress, (2) surface topographic variations, and (3) geologic anomalies. Effective control of cutter roof was obtained through improved bolting techniques, entry and mine reorientation, and entry and pillar size modifications, but only when selected based on the actual cause of failure.

A demonstration project investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of two management interventions, Management Training and Organization Development, for improving productivity and safety in metal/non-metal mines. The management training intervention was conducted at Texasgulf Company&apos;s trona mine, using three nearby trona mines as controls. The Organization Development intervention took place in Hecla Mining Company&apos;s Lucky Friday mine, using the highly similar Star Mine as control. The two management interventions seemed about equally effective in reducing accidents and injuries, as well as MSHA citations, and the management intervention at the Texasgulf mine also appeared to have led to substantial improvement in mine productivity.

FRIEND recently remarked that the career of Scott Turner is characterized by Work and Wild -A Ducks. To these might be added Accomplishment and Persistent Fishing. All of these elements are manifestations of his character. The diversions-hunting and fishing-are in the nature of the proverbial trolley conductor&apos;s holiday, for many of Turner&apos;s years have been spent in the outdoors, often in distant lands, as in Spitzbergen, where the ducks pictured below were bagged. The election of Scott Turner to the presidency of the Institute marks the culmination of a quarter century of membership, during the last two years of which he has been vice-president. He was born at Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880, and received his A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1902, with a B.S. and E.M. at the Michigan College of Mines in 1904. Since then he has been granted two honorary degrees, D.Sc. from the Colorado School of Mines, and D.Eng. from the University of Michigan, but he still prefers to be called "Scott" rather than "Doctor." Government service was not a new experience for Turner when he was appointed Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines by Secretary Hoover in 1925, for his first employment after graduation was as Field Assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey in Oregon and Idaho. This was followed by work in Tombstone, Ariz.; then his first foreign engagement in 1905-6 as superintendent of the San Pablo Gold Mining Co. in Panama. Various field experiences followed, though there was an interlude in work of a kind that few mining engineers ever experience. This was in technical journalism, for in 1906 he was

Silver-gold ratios were studied at the Tayoltita epithermal vein deposit using channel sample, channel sample line, stope, ore body and vein sample populations. The ratios are highly variable among individual channel samples (25:1 to greater than 500:1) with both high and low values randomly distributed within ore bodies and veins. Whole vein ratios for the fourteen most important ore producing structures range from 44:1 to 105:1, and show zonal distribution relative to two small granitic stocks, low values closest to the intrusives. The zoned nature of the deposit suggests that the stocks, apophyses of an underlying batholith of Late Eocene age, were the heat engines which powered the hydrothermal system responsible for ore deposition.

THE present organization of Copper Queen employ-ees, known as the Employees&apos; Conference Com-mittee, is really an outgrowth of the former Grievance Committee, which, in turn, had developed from the original Hospital Committee. The relatively small membership of these older organizations, the practical limitation of their activities to the presenting of grievances, and their lack of initiating powers, were the principal defects which the plan now in operation seeks to overcome. A somewhat parallel scheme was instituted in our Sacramento Hill division about four years ago; this gradually developed into the Ways and Means Committee, which, in addition to providing a forum for the discussion of operating problems, was instrumental in establishing an excellent and mutually satisfactory bonus system. Before recommending adoption of the plan now in force, we made extensive inquiries among those who have had any experience in such matters, and ended by proposing a modification of a scheme developed by John Leitch,1 which was characterized by its similarity to the constitution of the Federal Government. As finally remodeled, the. plan was submitted to vote of the entire working forces at the Copper Queen mines, and was adopted by them in May, 1920. Mining opera-tions since that date have been so interrupted that it is scarcely possible to state exactly what the results have been. The following quotations are from a printed pamphlet containing the constitution of the organization, as finally adopted. The first extract is from a letter addressed by the management to the employees: The plan submitted for your approval and adoption is modeled after the constitution of our own country, under which every individual is given an opportunity for advancement, according to his ability and determination, and every citizen is given a voice in the laws that shall govern him. So it is to encourage the individual employee in advancement, and to give him a voice in making the rules that shall govern his conduct, that we favor the adoption of the proposed constitution.

In Peru, after four years of pandemic, some mining companies have chosen to install integrated operating centers in central offices where through network technology and video surveillance it allows them to carry out their activities remotely, this has become a disruptive strategy to promote a safer and smarter mining industry. Our fundamental value is to improve the quality of life, safety and well being of our collaborators, that is why we have created the remote blasting engineering control center " Core" that allows us to humanize mining. Core is an integration of experience, security, technology, quality of life and artificial intelligence; it has media technology connected directly to the mining operation, specialist engineers and technical assistants in team they seek to create optimal proposals of drilling and blasting designs remotely that generate added value to customers. In the planning process the team suggests drilling meshes, in the loading process there are optimized, digitized designs and efficiency in the factory trucks finally in the safety process allows us to identify inadequate pipes within the blasting project, deviation of procedures, remote inspections, identify operating conditions to prevent future risks that may arise in the blasting process. The remote communication systems allow you to monitor mining operations remotely to identify and alert any operational or security deviation that was not identified by the personnel present in the operation, as well as to store images in case investigations are required. The results obtained have allowed us to reduce the exposure of personnel to any risk of the mining operation, to optimize times in the activities of our engineers who are in the mining operations since there is the permanent support of centralized specialists to face every challenge that arises in the operation, for the engineers who are in the offices of Core can be very close to the family and do not lose it, and for our customers it is to meet their needs with engineers specialists in the drilling and blasting process, as well as in safety to be able to proactively cope with any deviation that arises.

ABSTRACT A revised stratigraphic section of Carboniferous rocks which occupy about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland is presented. Gypsum, which outcrops at thirty-five different localities, is found to belong to four principal zones in the section. The newly mapped structure of the region makes the otherwise random occurrences of gypsum appear as systematic outcroppings of the four zones which follow the regional structure. Details of several occurrences are given and those most advantageous for exploitation are pointed out. INTRODUCTION ROCKS of Carboniferous age occupy an area of about 700 square miles in southwestern Newfoundland. They occur in a belt, from 5 to 15 miles wide, which extends from the head of St. Georges bay southwestward for 65 miles to the mouth of Little Codroy river (see Figure 1). Several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian rocks overlie rocks of Mississippian age, which are at least 12,000 feet thick. The rocks of the Carboniferous section of Newfoundland are very similar to those of Nova Scotia and represent a northeastward continuation of the same palaeophysiographic conditions. Mississippian measures of Windsor equivalence include thick gypsum deposits which outcrop at many places and which extend under large areas as indicated by sink-holes and by structural considerations.

While effective in treating refractory sulfide ores, pressure oxidation leaves carbonaceous matter unscathed and able to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions. Barrick Goldstrike&apos;s strategy to mitigate this problem is to minimize contact between dissolved gold and native carbon in advance of the carbon-in-leach (CIL) process. Measures currently in use include limiting carbonaceous matter in the plant feed by meticulous blending of ore, controlling the degree of oxidation in the autoclaves and blinding native carbon surfaces with lauryl sulfate. The presence of residual cyanide and thiocyanate in the process water remains to be a cause of premature gold dissolution and loss of gold by adsorption on carbonaceous matter. This cyanide is introduced by water that is recycled from the tailing pond. Of several treatment options considered, oxidation by peroxymonosulfuric acid, also known as Caro&apos;s acid, is deemed to be the most effective. Laboratory and pilot plant tests show that Caro&apos;s acid can oxidize free cyanide, weak¬acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide and thiocyanate, resulting in significant improvements in gold recovery downstream. The process requires Caro&apos;s acid at 125 % of the stoichiometric requirement and pH in the range of 9.5 to 10 to accomplish the desired destruction in about twenty minutes. A cyanide destruction plant is currently being designed and construction should be completed by the end of 2005.

THE 123d meeting of the Institute was held in New York Feb. 14 to 17, 1921. The total registration was 1199, as compared with 1138 at the New York meeting in 1920. The weather was a strange and welcome contrast to that of last year, when New York was buried under six feet of snow as the result of the fiercest blizzard in its history. This year there was no snow, and the weather was said to be much more like an Arizona winter than New York. A complete program of the Technical Sessions is on p. 9. The discussions of the papers presented will be published in pamphlet form as soon as possible and will be noted in MINING AND METALLURGY in the usual way.

The group of iron-ore mines known as the Red Ore Mines, owned and operated by the Woodward Iron Co., is on Red Mountain approximately ten miles southwest of Birmingham, Ala. At the present time NO. 1 and No. 3 mines are active, No. 2 mines having been abandoned in 1928. Ore from this group of mines was first mined in 1882, and originally came from open cuts along the outcrop, but, when the "soft ore" (weathered hematite) was mined out and the harder ore was encountered, it became necessary to develop the orebody by means of slopes driven in the ore formation. The three mines to date have produced more than 22,000,000 tons, and the two operating mines now have a capacity of over 1,000,000 tons per year. Geology The U. S. Geological Survey has described the features of the district. It places the hematite of Red Mountain, commonly called "red ore," in the Clinton formation of the Silurian system. This formation varies from 200 to 300 ft. in thickness, and is composed largely of shale (slate) and sandstone. There are four iron orebeds in the formation, known as the Hickory Nut, Ida, Big Seam and the Irondale seams. The strike of the orebeds is northeast and southwest, and the dip is southeast, the outcrops being on the west side of the mountain. The two seams that have been worked at the Red Ore mines are the Big Seam and the Ida. The Big Seam, which is and has been the principal source of the ore mined, is approximately 20 ft. thick and consists of hematite and ferruginous bands of sandstone. It is separated into "upper" and "lower bench" ore by a slate parting that is about 30 in. thick. All present mining is confined to the "upper bench" ore, which is uniform in texture and drills and breaks fairly easily when the holes are placed so as to take full advantage of the face of the ore. Typical analyses are shown in Table 1. The attention of the world is being focused on the spectacular rise of elemental sulphur production in Alberta. In the short space of a decade, production has increased from less than 10,000 long tons, in 1952, to al-most 1,000,000 long tons in 1962. Moreover, 1963 sulphur production is expected to rise by 50 per cent to approximately 1,500,000 long tons, and further increases are forecast for ensuing years. The reason for this dramatic in-crease in elemental sulphur production, particularly in the last year or two, is that Alberta elemental sulphur is recovered in association with the production of sour natural gas. When very large volumes of natural gas began moving to U.S. markets in the latter part of 1961, the resultant increase in sour gas production led to a marked increase in the production of sulphur. Consequently, Canada, mainly on the strength of sulphur produced in Alberta, will soon become the second largest producer of sulphur in the Free World

THE metallurgist is familiar with the rapid development of concentration -by flotation and smelting in the reverberatory in recent years, brought &apos;about chiefly by the exhaustion of&apos; bodies of .rich, coarse, direct smelting ore. Geologically speaking, in many porphyry-copper districts, the richer contact or replace let deposits surrounding &apos;the main ore-forming igneous intrusion have been exhausted, and it is necessary to beneficiate the copper minerals disseminated throughout the mass of the intrusion itself. The organization of great companies to treat such low- grade ores on a large scale and the practices resulting from the necessity for an economic method of treatment &apos;are among the most prominent metallurgical developments of the past decade. It is interesting to note the effect of the present trend of practice on the inter-relationship of the concentrator and smelter, on the constituents of the smelter charge, and on smelting in general.

This section presents highlights of world economic and mineral industry performance in 1982, a year characterized by continued recession, and selected 1983 forecasts of economic indicators of importance to the mineral industry, some of which indicate a modest improvement in the economies of the United States and Western Europe. The U.S. Economy in 1982 In 1982 U.S. gross national product (GNP) in current dollars increased at a rate of 4 percent, but GNP adjusted for inflation (real GNP) declined at a rate of 1.8 percent. Yearend 1982 real GNP was at roughly the same level as in 1980 (table 1). Thus no growth in real terms had taken place in the United States during the 1980-82 period.
